"The Lake Forest mall site is getting the go ahead for a redesign. A rezoning and sketch plan was unanimously approved by the Gaithersburg city council this week. The plan divides the 102 acre site between residential units, a community park, a new transit center, and an outdoor entertainment district. Some residents did voice their concerns, particularly about the need for more green space they said. Here's mayor Judd ashman. I feel like from the beginning of our master plan process, the community has approached the future of the Lake Forest property very constructively and contributed meaningfully. And so I appreciate the back and forth that has happened here. The mall shut its doors at the end of March after first opening 45 years ago. Who doesn't like walking into sparkling new public restrooms, especially when you're on the road traveling a fresh new set is now open at BWI Marshall airport on concourse B they're design was based on upgraded restrooms that opened as part of a recent expansion of concourse a they have space for stowing your rolling luggage bags, improved ventilation, lights that tell you if a stall has someone in there already or not, and sensors that let the staff know when crucial supplies like TP need to be restocked. 5 more sets of these restrooms in the terminal are set for makeovers by the end of the year. It was a tactical multi agency response to evict unhoused people staying at the former key bridge Marriott hotel located in rosslyn. Over the past couple of weeks our public ticket came as a fire and police have responded to several calls on the property. In particular, we had a medical call. Aaron Miller deputy county manager for public safety says they deem the hotel site as unsafe and unfit for habitation. For instance a fire alarm system is not working and there's no water to the property. The property was purchased in 2018 by KBL H, LLC, shy and current WTO P news. Once the building is secure, it will be boarded up there will also be fencing and a 24 hour security there for the foreseeable future we're told. When Lake Forest mall closes at the end of the month, the Gaithersburg community will lose more than the memories of a retail hub, a nonprofit will have to actually find a brand new location for its food distribution program. Ever since the pandemic hit three years ago, the nonprofit so what else has been distributing food to hungry families out of the sprawling Lake Forest mall space. "Man is facing multiple charges after being found with more than a dozen stolen catalytic converters. It all started yesterday morning when the Frederick county Maryland sheriff's office received a call for a man stealing catalytic converters out of cars parked at Beckley's camping center in Vermont. The man ran away were told but deputies found him walking along a road later. He's been identified as 28 year old Eric Lindsay, 17 catalytic converters worth about $59,000 were recovered. It is so tough to start a new business, a new program now aims to help Latino people do that in prince George's county. The application process is open up to 25 Latino owned businesses will be selected to take part in the business accelerator program sponsored by the prince George's county economic development corporation. The 7 week program in cooperation with M&T Bank will focus on business planning, establishing credit, managing bank accounts, marketing, branding, and licensing sessions will be held entirely in Spanish at the end of the course that will be a pitch competition that comes with a $5000 prize. After being convicted of killing his girlfriend, 57 year old Darnell Sterling was found guilty of killing 34 year old Olga oro in 2020. She was reported missing after a 7 year old son was found wandering the halls of her apartment building in northwest D.C.. Prosecutors said that Sterling killed uro inside her apartment while the boy was sleeping. Surveillance footage from the apartment building shows Sterling pushing a hand card into the elevator, then dragging a large object wrapped in fabric on the hand card out to the elevator toward the parking garage. Her body has not yet been found. A 20 year old man is under arrest after a community tip led Montgomery county police to hundreds of fentanyl laced pills. Police say business owners in a shopping center in glenmont tipped them off to potential alcohol and drug use there. They were patrolling the center on George avenue earlier this week when they spotted 20 year old Alan Garcia and a girl in a stairwell. Garcia ran when he was confronted, he was quickly detained. Hundreds of fentanyl pills, drug paraphernalia, containing heroin residue, and a ghost gun were found on Garcia during a search, both the girl and Garcia are facing drug related charges. The girl has been released to her parents, Garcia is being held without bond. The Washington Post reporting NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has told mayor muriel Bowser that the league supports her efforts to obtain the RFK stadium site from the federal government because he wants the district to have a seat at the table and the commander's efforts to build a new stadium. There is some mixed news today when it comes to global carbon emissions. First, the bad news. The international energy agency says emissions were higher last year. Now the good news. The increase was less than expected, and agency analysis found emissions of carbon dioxide climbed less than 1% or 321 million metric tons in 2022. That uptick came amid a global energy crisis sparked by the war in Ukraine that drove many countries to turn to coal and oil power. At the same time, analysts say energy security concerns prompted by the war are expected to hasten the transition away from fossil fuels. Linda kenyon, CBS News. Waterlogged Californians are getting some good news on the drought front. Half the state is no longer under a three year old drought. The central valley, the Sierra foothills, the coastlines and the Bay Area, rich tinker is with the U.S. drought monitor. The jury and the trial of disbarred South Carolina lawyer Alec Murdoch could be getting the case by the end of the day. Both the prosecution and defense made their final cases to the jury and Alec Murdoch's trial in Walter Burroughs, South Carolina, defense lawyer Jim Griffin told jurors. You have to decide the evidence based on the facts that the state puts before you. Not theories, not inferences, not speculation, but cold, hard facts. The 54 year old Murdoch testified he did not fatally shoot his wife and son at the family sprawling property in June of 2021. CBS News. And in three 15 we'll go in depth about the trial with CBS correspondent Nikki batiste, who's in walterboro. Do local men are facing federal charges following a string of violent crimes targeting convenience stores and prince George's county and southern Maryland. Prosecutors say Stephen Kennedy and Donnell Kelly conspired to set fire to 7 11 convenience stores in order to gain access to ATMs, beginning in January of last year, the men are accused of planning to deploy explosives at the stores during business hours, hoping to force the businesses to close. According to documents, the men caused at least $249,000 in losses to the ATM company and concealed evidence by burning the vehicles used in the crimes. All right, Jeff, 9 41, when a D.C. teen was chased into a stairwell by a masked gunman, the boy banged on his neighbor's doors for help before he was shot and killed. The teenager who pulled the trigger is now 21 years old and is facing consequences. Within days of 15 year old Gerald Watson's killing, police arrested then 16 year old Tariq holston, who court documents said was known around Hartford street southeast as a violent kid. When a dispute between neighborhoods grew to a fever, court documents a holstein made it known, he was looking for Watson. On December 13th, 2019, Watson was walking out to play basketball when two young men wearing masks chased him into his own apartment building. The documents say he begged neighbors for help and to open their doors before they heard 16 gunshots. Police found the anacostia high school freshman dying in the stairwell, a jury found holstein guilty of first degree murder, and he'll spend the next 40 years in prison. Meghan cloher, a WTO news. In east Palestinian Ohio residents will have the opportunity to address the operator of the train that derailed while carrying toxic chemicals through their community nearly a month ago. Locals remain frustrated about potential long-term health effects from that derailment and subsequent fire, the EPA ordered train operator Norfolk Southern to meet with a east Palestinian residents tonight last month, railroad officials backed out of a town hall with local officials, citing threats against its employees in addition to locals who have reported health issues since the derailment, crews involved in the cleanup have also reported symptoms to government officials.
