"At Lake Forest mall and Gaithersburg, but this week we learned it is about to close. After 45 years, the Lake Forest mall is closing its doors in March. Macy's is closing their store at the end of the end of March. We're down to just a handful of tenants. Kevin Rogers is the executive vice president of the company that owns them all at WRS, and he made the announcement at a city of Gaithersburg mayor and city council meeting on Tuesday. He also went over a zoning and sketch plan for proposed redevelopment of the mall. It includes space for new businesses, housing, green space, a new transit center, and outdoor entertainment district. Proud of the fact that we think we've come up with something that's a more of an urban grid. But the meaning was just the first step in the redeveloping process, plans have still yet to be finalized, and it's not clear yet when the mall will be demolished. Stetson Miller, WTO P news. We have new information about what led to a teacher in Newport News reportedly being shot and wounded by a 6 year old student that teacher was released from the hospital this week. The boy's family now says the child suffered from an acute disability, but they have not elaborated on exactly what that disability is. In a statement, the family says one of the child's parents usually accompanied him in class, but that did not hurt happen during the week of the shooting. The family also said it has always been committed to responsible gun ownership and the gun the boy got a hold of had been secured the family's attorney tells The Associated Press. It's his understanding, the gun was in the mother's closet on a top shelf well over 6 feet high, he also says the gun had a trigger lock on it that requires a key similar to a bike lock. High school students in Florida are being blocked from taking a new advanced placement course on African American studies, a letter sent from Florida's Department of Education to the college board states, the course is contrary to Florida law and significantly lacks educational value. CNN reports the letter didn't elaborate on what course content was objectionable. The rejection of the AP course follows efforts by governor Ron DeSantis to overcall Florida's educational curriculum. "Even though Hamlin can visit the team's facility, he can't travel often without saying from where his representative said Hamlin will be cheering for the bills on Sunday when buffalo hosts Cincinnati in an AFC divisional playoff. There's not much left that's still open at Lake Forest mall and Gaithersburg now we're learning the mall will permanently close at the end of March and then later be demolished. Many are wondering what will eventually take its place. After Lake Forest while closes, its owner WRS real estate investments hopes to demolish it as soon as possible. But financing has to be worked out first, and so does the rezoning and redevelopment process. Submitted plans call for turning the space where the mall is into residential and commercial uses with green space. At a city council meeting on Tuesday, residents share their thoughts on what they'd like to see in the redevelopment, including Adama, Musa aruna. We would like to see more access to affordable housing, irrigation center. 8th grade student Sara Amina wants the development to include space for her and her peers. "Summer we thought we were out of the Woods right We thought we were done But the mass came off president Biden was talking about how last 4th of July who was going to be independent state from COVID And we know what happened Shortly thereafter we had Delta and we had a big surge from Delta and then over the winter we had So I'm very much hoping that as we've talked about before we're done with the pandemic aspect of this in the United States I really hope we are that it's going to now endemic But we can't be guaranteed So if somebody's not yet been vaccinated what a great time to be vaccinated the risk of something bad happening from infection is low but this is the time where you can prepare or should in the event that we have a surge with a new variant and let's hope that doesn't happen No guarantee that it won't though Let's all be vaccinated so we're prepared if we do have another search sometime in the future Doctor Jeffrey cope and stay right there He's the chief medical officer at northwestern medicine Lake Forest hospital You can tell because he's wearing clothes that say that But here's one last question for you doctor when we come back answer this for us Maybe you've got a question too Three one two 9 8 one 7 200 We can now say endemic I wonder when the endemic ends When do we hit the non dam standpoint When is it utterly not a factor in our lives anymore Doctor Jeffrey cope joins us Chief medical officer at northwestern over at Lake Forest Hey doctor cope and what would you say is the answer to that question I asked you before the break How are you again Well I'm great Thank you I'm thinking about coach negi's basketball court Well we'll know John we have to come back in our next lives as NFL football coaches Yeah well and then but never unpack that last suitcase because you're going to be moving eventually They never keep those jobs for long It seems with a few exceptions And then you move in with your assistant coach apparently with something like that Something like that So when is it no longer an endemic in a done demo I mean well COVID be out of our lives at some point doctor Yeah you know Jen I don't know and no one can predict And let me tell you why What we experience every year is the seasonal influenza virus This seasonal flu which we all know It's just part of our life It is an endemic virus It's part of our life The influenza virus that we deal with every year that is actually a descendant of the Spanish flu pandemic back in 1918 through 1920 So that one still with us more than a hundred years later And that's an endemic So we continue to experience this semblance of that virus Isn't that interesting when you think about it These viruses can just persist Now there are other viruses that have caused pandemic conditions throughout human history that can mutate themselves away and they're not even endemic anymore They're barely around So hopefully that's what happens with the COVID virus but we're not going to know We're going to have to wait and see Fair enough Give me some good news then I got a question for you Okay sure I was going to say the good news is today in 2022 compared to what the situation was back in 1920 Now we have the capability to make vaccine And that's gigantic right We can make vaccine We will have a vaccine every year At least once as long as necessary to protect ourselves from COVID virus and we also now have antiviral medication that will be available for people who get infected with the virus in our potentially at risk for developing a severe illness from the virus So we're way ahead of where we were a hundred years ago And we should feel pretty good about that Doctor Who side are you on on this one The mom or the grandma this listener says I've got a two month old grandchild I'm not allowed to see because I'm not vaccinated Why not if I test negative I already had COVID a year ago would you say that that child's mother is being too protective and that the grandma should be allowed to go see the two month old No I'm with my man That's usually a side with the grandparents being a grandparent myself Jen But in this case I'm going to I'm going to side with the mama the two months old Demand has been appropriately concerned about a two month old Two months old are at risk for getting all kinds of infections as we know And not grandma she vaccinated That's all I can say Go ahead and get vaccinated This is not going to be a problem that goes away Please get vaccinated make your daughter happy and then you can go spend all the time you want with your grandchild Don't miss out on that That's a great thing Let's talk next Tuesday It's always a pleasure doctor Jeffrey cope and over at Lake Forest hospital in northwestern Thanks Doc Bye bye John Take care Chicago.

"You're on the air Good afternoon How are you Hey good afternoon John Thanks for having me A jump in here on the conversation about KN 95s make the distinction for us between those and other masks and how much better they are or are not So let's look at you go from cloth mask to a surgical mask to a KN 95 to a true and 95 In the hospital all our care team get fit tested within N95 mask And I think the general public would not last very long wearing an N95 mask They are not comfortable They fit very tight when we get fit tested You actually get a hood placed around you and then they spray in this sort of noxious smelling and tasting spray of which you're not supposed to get any when you're taking deep breaths That's how you know you've passed your fit test within N95 K 95 is very similar but kind of a milder step down surgical masks are very good There was a recent study that came out with omari now looking at the time it takes to get infected if you're wearing a no mask versus a plain cloth mask to surgical to K and 95 and N95 And the difference goes literally from minutes up to 23 hours of being exposed That's the big difference in a high quality mask Labor on that point for a moment here So if I at the end 95 I could be breathing around the oma cron variants say for almost a full day and I would not get COVID-19 right You're likelihood of getting COVID-19 is greatly greatly reduced That is absolutely correct And what's the least efficacious would be some logo cotton mask made out of you know the same stuff that is some sort of stretchy fabric right That's not exactly and it also we want people that have those to use them but use them properly They need to be tight fitting We know as soon as they get wetter moist they lose their effectiveness so if you have the chance to get a KN 95 or a good surgical mask when you're going out in public it's not a bad idea Right now during this surge On a phone line is doctor Michael Bauer medical director at northwestern medicine's Lake Forest hospital This conversation is sponsored by northwestern medicine relentless in their pursuit of better healthcare So my question for you too when we come back after a quick break doctor is how long can I use the kn 95 And one day days can I wash it just give me something on the lifespan What should I be paying for that thing doctor Oh you know what I honestly couldn't tell you Fortunately I just get mine supplied for use at the hospital I'd have to go on Amazon to tell you what you should be paying But be careful where you get them because I'm sure there's plenty of counterfeits out there Can I reuse them and how long That I don't think there's any hard and fast rule it all depends how long you're wearing it in a day I've seen recommendations that say oh don't wear it more than 5 times or 6 times It all depends how long it's been on your face the most important things to watch for is make sure it doesn't get wet or soiled and make sure it's still tight fitting Earlier in the days of the pandemic when we were at risk of running out of supplies we had everybody storing there is in paper bags and they would cycle through them several times We'd want to keep it in a paper bag for a day or two and it would be labeled And then you could go ahead and reuse it again Fortunately now our supply chain has done a phenomenal job of securing plenty of masks to keep our staff safe But make sure it stays dry cycle through them don't put them in the wash because that will definitely destroy the integrity of the mask Year and a half ago remember everybody was sewing them A clothing stores clothing manufacturers were making fabric masks for everybody Grandmas and grandpas were sowing them and then handing them out to family and friends And again I suppose that wasn't a terrible idea but now that the supply chain is caught up with better stuff there's no sense in wearing those when we have access to these right That is correct So again the best mask is the one that somebody is going to put on and where properly Once you've covered that then increasing the protectiveness level going to the surgical ones which really do a fine job out in public as long as it stays tight Some people will double loop them around their ears et cetera but the chin straps the one under the nose when your mouth wearing it around your mouth and it gets wet almost useless Yeah that's pretty frustrating to see people sometimes follow the letter but not the spirit of that law or the spirit but not the letter of that law If it's under your nose it's kind of aggravating to everybody around you Or the ones that had the vents in the middle That right Hello so you're breathing out at me Thank you There was one lady who thought she was so clever She invented one with a zipper along the mouth So when you went to the store you could unzip it and talk more readily but of course sort of defeated the purpose of the mask The Chicago public schools aren't the only school district that are trying to figure out how kids can go back to school safely In the suburbs and throughout the state of Illinois schools are postponing in person learning some of them until the third week of January as you've watched this unfold before our eyes what do you make of how the school districts are handling it What do you think the best course of action is I wish there was better uniformity because we run into well my neighboring district is doing this Why is my school doing school district doing it This way The bottom line though kids need to be back in school What happened last year was absolutely awful and what really has been shown is we can get them in schools safely The level of transmission of COVID even during this big surge we're seeing with homework it tends to parallel the level of transmission in the community We have not seen these much higher rates of spread within school the biggest issue comes is when school teachers and staff et.

"Week and there was nothing available at the time. The site closed at seven. Tonight, officials were only able to vaccinate 4800 people, many appointments going unused. So how did this happen when there's a desperate shortage of that scene? We have done second doses and prioritized doses. Second doses a week ago, and we move those people through first, so we're controlling the appointments and opening up appointments as vaccines are available. Officials also say Ellie City residents may have gotten confusing messages. When the county announced only second shots would be given out this week. This week. It has been less people signing up. We're inviting people that if you're in that tear 65 plus Or health care worker. This is your opportunity for those who took the opportunity to get inoculated. Today. The feeling was the same from health care worker to senior. Little being everything because I live with my grandparent's very thankful to get this vaccination. No, no doses went to waste of night. In fact, they'll be used for appointments for tomorrow. At last check. The city did not have any appointment available tomorrow. But they say that could change. Very quickly. All right, like that. This is a problem with TV listening to that was frustrating, And I'm reading the story, too. There was so much focus on interviewing people, people who are very happy to get the vaccine. People in line. It's TV. We gotta show people being interviewed. They buried the story. Exactly. That's why I'm ticked. They buried the story. Now I can explain it where we both can in clear terms, and it should have been the headline. L. A County was talking this week about having a shortage of vaccines, so therefore they were saying starting Tuesday on Lee second Dose appointments will Dodger Stadium's in L. A city site. They didn't have the same. Info being put out They were still going to do second doses. So it looks like people who made appointments. Heard the L. A County story and decided. Oh, I can't get my second dose of Dodger Stadium. They're saying that I'm gonna do second show up. Nobody knows that l A city has a different system in L, a county exactly, Which is why it's so freaking frustrating. That's so dumb. And I didn't even know that I thought the Dodger Stadium was for L. A county people. Every news report that I heard yesterday and the day before. Was its second dose week in L. A county. That's that's all I heard, Which means the county and the city did not give a clear message. No, and all the broadcasting outlets didn't give a clear message. And then when she found that gets the story here on Channel line, it's all about. I'm so grateful to finally get to call the people that got there, right. Why is that? No news. What is it with interviewing people? While they say they have the same clich? Aid response one after the other after the other. That is not news that an old lady is happy to get her vaccine. We assume that we assume everybody's happy to get the vaccine or they wouldn't be going Instead, the story is how come these bumbling pump foods that run the county and the city? Don't get out the correct message. How do you end up with seven? 1000 empty appointments. Claiming there were no waste two doses. I'd like to see proof of that I would, too, Because don't they take him out of the freezer for the for the days? I guess I don't know what they do, but so so hurt. Her story should have been. How could there possibly be 7000? Unfilled appointments. Yeah, right. How could that happen? Well, it turns out that the county and the city don't coordinate their messages, and nobody knows that the city is separate from the county. Nobody knows that. I don't even know right now. Could I go to the city website and book an appointment? Dodger Stadium or do I have to be in l. A resident? Do you even know I don't even I don't know. That's how screwed up because nobody in the media explains this stuff. We get all the silly goose city gets doses. The county gets doses, but everybody thinks of them as kind of the same. No, because we get the silly news. We get the impeachment news. We get all the news that has nothing to do with our lives with one thing that brings us all together is we all want the damn vaccine When I turn on the radio or television, I just want to know. Can I get the vaccine today? If that's today win And then 70. It's embarrassing and whoops. No, that's a major screw up. It could have been 7000. People could've got the vaccine today. Who didn't because you didn't send out the right message. Where is that frightened little twit running around this clipboard? Isn't he supposed to get out the message Garcetti there said Yes. OK, lot of twits. Yeah, the chief because he was a Dodger Stadium He was Dodger Stadium in the New York Times reporter was there to grease him up? Mm. Looking looking a little twit running around with his good board. Look, he's moving the parking cones. Look, he's he's handing that was the New York Times and did that story, Right? Yeah. The New York Times. Yeah, they did. The New York Times did a big, big wet grease up cat. Yes. Are we going to kiss? All right, So there you go. It's something you only here on the John and Ken show That should have been the lead story. They screwed up. People didn't understand that Dodger Stadium was still a go because it's run by the city. It's the county that said, We're only doing second dose appointments. God, This is so frustrating. We got more coming up. John and Ken CAF I Debra Mark can do. "Weekend. Let's talk to Dr Jeffrey Copan. Now with the top medical news. He is the chief medical officer at Northwestern Medicine. Lake Forest Hospital, Doctor Copan. How you doing? By the end of Good afternoon. Good after you knew into the listeners on this beautiful, snowy day. I know you got appreciate it, don't you? And then, then it gets called super cold. I don't know if I appreciate that as much doctor Copan, but that's the way just that's what we have to deal with. Hey, I want to ask you about the vaccines in general get a lot of things to get to, But I just sort of, you know, I feel like that's top of mind for so many people getting the vaccine and I wonder sort of big picture. If you could just kind of give us your view. It seems we have to and distribution and others could be in the pipeline pretty soon. Just where are we right now? Yeah, I thought we wish we were way had more the quantity of vaccines that were available so we can move faster and get more jabs into people's arms. But it is what it is. We know that there's more coming. From the federal government s. Oh, that will be good. That will be helpful. And we also know that Mo Derna incisor had been able to pick up the pace of there. Manufacturers, So we should be seen Morva vaccine coming from those two companies over the next month or so, so that would be helpful. Then we fully expect the Johnson and Johnson will be bringing its data from its faith retrial. To FDA that should happen any day. It will then take f d a couple of weeks. To do its analysis. Then there's an independent advisory board that will look at the data and make its recommendation to FDA and our hope is by the end of this month. Johnson and Johnson's vaccine will be Proof from emergency use, and we'll start to get Johnson and Johnson's vaccine into use in the United States, and there's several million doses that apparently is ready to go. Once they get there, okay, and they're picking up the pace of their manufacturer is well. AstraZeneca, which has been its vaccine is the mainstay of what's been used in Britain. That data in its you ask trial should be coming to FDA shortly as well. So hopefully we'll have AstraZeneca in the United States Per happened, perhaps in March. And then there's also the number of that vaccine that hopefully will be seen that data pretty rapidly to So there's a bunch of new vaccines that should be giving into the pipeline within the next month or so, maybe a little bit longer, so there's a lot more coming. So all that's good news. It is good news, and it's not soon enough, but but we have to be patient. And it does seem as if how fortunate are we right that we have this many vaccines developed in record time and making it out. Folks, right? We just It's something. Yeah, I mean, really, you know, we we've talked about this before right that it's just It's incredible what the scientific community and the vaccine industry's been able to do. Get vaccines out to us this quickly. You know, we're coming up to the Anniversary next month of the first cases in the United States, and we're already giving vaccines. I mean, we now I mean, think about this good news. There are no more Americans. With gotten at least one dose of covert 19 vaccine, then his tested positive. Covert 19. That's a great great threshold that we just passed and I was so happy to see that obviously, they're more people who's had covert infections and have tested positive. But the fact that we now control that we've had more people getting at least one dose that is tested positive. That's a great place and that should make us all feel good that we're on our way. Exploding California wildfires prompt evacuation orders for 100,000

"About 100,000 people in Orange County are under evacuation orders this morning as the region braces for another blast of dangerous weather. That could push two wildfires into residential areas. Forecasters are predicting Santa Ana winds with gusts of up to 50 to 80 MPH at times over much of Southern California, with some the strongest expected in Orange County. Two firefighters were critically injured yesterday fighting the Silverado fired their Irvine and Lake Forest each suffered 2nd and 3rd degree burns over much their bodies, according to Orange County Fire chief Brian Fennessy. I was at the hospital shortly after both firefighters were brought to the hospital. They're gravely injured. An investigation is underway to determine how the firefighters were overcome by the flames. Southern California Edison reported to the state's Public Utilities Commission last night. It's investigating whether it's equipment might have started the fire. The utility said a wire that last two telecommunications line to a supporting cable may have struck a high voltage conducting line. Silverado Fire has burned over is 12,000 Acres and is now 5% contained. Irvine Mayor Christina Shay says residents need to be ready to go as soon as they get the word. We're urging everyone to comply with the evacuation orders, please for their safety and safety of our first responders. The winds were so strong that firefighters had to ground their aircraft for much the day they got back up by late yesterday afternoon and work through much the night a second blaze. The Blue Ridge Fire started in Santa Ana Canyon yesterday and has now grown to 8000 acres. That fire near your blend is also is completely uncontained and has forced about 20,000 people to evacuate.

Silverado Fire: Two Firefighters Seriously Hurt, 7,000+ Acres Burned, Zero Containment, Los Angeles

"Well of course, story today is been the wind and eventually what came with the wind event some fires. The biggest of which is over four thousand acres burned in. Orange. County. They call it these Silverado fire it's in eastern Orange County and the area affected the most or some neighborhoods. In Irvine. They have had difficulty because of the winds using air support to help contain this fire. Burning out near Yorba Linda. But the tough news we got a couple of hours ago with regards to the Orange County fire near Irvine is at a COUPLA, firefighters were severely burned covering this for Kfi news is Corbin Carson with the latest on what's going on in Orange County forbidden from the looks on television the wind is still blowing very strongly. Yeah it picks up an in. It drops off I'm still over here at the O C Global Medical Center where those firefighters were were were abroad. But yes, as you mentioned all throughout the day, we have seen these really strong winds is knocking stuff all over the streets kicking down a flagpoles and you know campaign signs you name it it's just it's mates from for some really tough conditions in and as we've just heard that the Fire that started in Santiago Canyon. This morning is now to seventy, two hundred acres, and then the fire that I'm about to be headed to. Now that over near your Yorba Linda has grown to over a thousand acres. We're hearing that there's a possibly one structure burned. So I'm going to check that out right now, and we just recently also heard all the new evacuations for the area we got that update from division chief Shane sure would. Mandatory evacuation orders here in the city of Irvine, their impacting approximately ninety thousand, eight hundred residents. So all residents north of Irvine Boulevard from Jamboree to Bake Parkway. As well as from Irvine, boulevard south to Bianca, road from Jeffrey Road East to patrol high high school all under mandatory evacuations. Also the communities in the city of lake forest, Baker ranch and Foothill ranch are also under mandatory evacuations. So as you just heard ninety thousand people more than ninety, nine, thousand people affected by these new orders. So a lot of people being asked to move those people around those areas that are not specifically affected they are being told stay ready in case. The wind shifts or they are told some at some point to move and that people can check with their local areas too as to where to get the latest updates and make sure that they're ready to go if needed. But earlier as you also mentioned, we had a couple of firefighters this afternoon that were out there they were they were on the hand crews and one was twenty, six years old one was thirty one years old the the the hankers part of their. Clearing the line and making sure they're trying to get some kind of containment on these fires as they're moving as fast as they can, and unfortunately we heard from OC fire authority Brian Fantasy that two of them were severely burned. This afternoon here is him making bringing this tough news to US earlier one of the hardest things? Any fire chief can do is is to report. Out on one. One of the firefighter family members have been injured or. Or worse. This is. A tough for me. Tougher all my firefighters. And certainly for the families of my two injured firefighters. One of them, a twenty, six year old and one of them at thirty one year old. One has sixty five percent burns both second and third degree. The second has fifty percent. Both second and third degree burns, and so what we're hearing is currently the families are here with them at the OC global, medical center that both have been intimated and aren't able to speak and they are in critical condition. But again, as you guys in, we were talking about a couple of hours ago just these winds that have been going through this area. I. Was Talking to a meteorologist about what to expect earlier on this and he told me that Sandiego. Canyon is his right in this wind corridor of OC. In that, you know this morning he had seen and we've already heard gust close to one hundred miles per hour in different areas. He says, these wins did a complete one eighty from onshore to offshore all part of this massive system bringing snow from Canada to Mexico this week. So we're really expecting these winds where everyone's keeping an eye out and being ready to go of necessary. The
