"Well after the holidays, I took a couple calls from people that were calling in, you know, with their school codes and closings and delays and 11 man said. He said, We're doing our best to keep it open. He said. We've closed enough already. And I understand that. But you gotta be. Let's face it. You got to be a little bit tougher to be in the Midwestern states. Yeah, you do. Then you do somewhere else. Now you and I grew up in in almost The same neighborhood. My neighborhood was just slightly north of your neighborhood. I was originally born. Those who don't know my my father played for Ohio State and then played in the Canadian Football League. So I was born in a very small town of Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada on there's where people that's winter up there and you know snow, So this is nothing but the people that you know if you're in Ohio and different states, there are some states it just don't get it. They'll never say like I What's happening. I was like, Look we've seen you know, like I saw Atlanta got a dusting a few years ago. They have one snow truck for obvious reasons. But kids were seeing snow for the first time, and they had no idea what to do with People were panic shopping, and we were like, what are you doing? Eyes happening? You know another city that shocked me growing up in Minnesota. It was the same way. This obviously is nothing but it's like our boss said yesterday. You know whether affects us all to stories real quick. Washington D C Without a doubt, probably the most powerful city in the world. And would you believe Bad Snowmageddon head. What was it? 2010 2011, and And it was a bad storm. Don't get me wrong. I don't want to underestimate the power of that storm, but it shut that whole city down. I mean, you're talking about this city where it's a melting pot of people live and work from all over the world in D. C and they just shut it down. There was also the story of window. I was doing radio and Syracuse and you talk about a city. I think it's even worse than Cleveland as far as Lake effect, snow I remember doing my show. It was an afternoon show. And then I wrapped up its seven I went out and I had a white Chevy Cavalier and I couldn't find my car. I couldn't find it. I was another one of those in the snow belt. I grew up in Valparaiso, Indiana, which is Northwest Indiana, which is close to Chicago. So all that Lake effect snow you're talking about used to. We used to get hammered by it. I feel bad for school kids today because when I was a kid, it was like a joy when there was a snowy morning. To tune in to the radio and listen to hear if your school was Ryan's That anticipate that's like a great childhood memories. And nowadays it's you know, you get a tax store. You know, of course this year, you know After the school's most of the schools are virtual. So there's no such thing as a snow day. But you know what I'm talking about that that was like when you were a kid like toe. Listen to the radio. And here, you know, Valpo schools are closed. Yes. That was all sad. No one gets that charge anymore because it's you know, you get a text now or whatever did tell you that your schools as well and or the schools are now you know, sometimes tweeting them out to first. But, Matt, your kids, I think, go to the same school district that that's my son goes to sew it. How do they feel about the whole snow day? Think is their back Virtual again, Right? I mean, you know they get, you know Snow days are non existent because you're just working virtually so I don't know. They mean they like the snow days when they get him, But I haven't even talked to her about it. This'll year just because I mean, this is the first day we really had any kind of Any kind of snow, So I know I do know this. My kids hate the snow. Now they like it when there's a snow day, but getting them to, you know, go outside in the snow. Maybe shoveled the driveway is is a channel. You can't get him to do that yet. No, no, they're not. I mean, they do. I shouldn't say that they don't. But they're not thrilled about it. And you know what? To be honest with you. I can't play my mind. No, no. Snow was not my favorite. Let dad do that. Yeah, well, it's not so much that it's just, you know, I got an issue. Now we have a dog. For this the first winter. We've had a dog as a family. And, uh, he does not want to go outside when it's it's gotten cold. You know here the over last week? Yeah. Dude, you gotta pee and poop and he does not want to go outside. I hear I'll go outside last night. I tried to take him out. It was snowing and he just stood, you know on all fours. And I'm pulling. I'm like trying to drag him outside and he's got this look on his face. I'm not going so I don't know what you have to treat him like a cat down a litter box or something, but he does not. Like being outside. In this weather, and just so you know, you're not alone. My talks with this. He's got to toughen up, man. It's wintertime. Let's go. Amen to that. I know I gotta toss it to you for sports. Anything do with Ohio State today with football? Not really. You know, there was, I guess a positive sign yesterday in that they for healthy players actually opened up the facility. Which I don't know if that tells us anything that they haven't had more positive tests. I don't know. But they had small group workouts for the players that have not tested positive. Which is good. I mean, I think now whether that means we're gonna have a football game this weekend or not, I don't know, but The fact that they open the facility. Can I seed the lawn into late October?
"Says I live about two miles south of Lake Erie and twenty miles west of Cleveland. Is it too late to aerate and overseed my lawn? Would it be better to aerate and overseed in the spring break? Well now that that's kind of a tough thing on training there is a I'm going to call it a lake effect band around Lake Erie read that runs anywhere from two to five miles south of the Lakeshore just because of the body of water slowing the effects of change now grass seed is pretty resilient. I think if Murray was to get or have help getting the sly seating done and feeding done immediately and that would mean yet this afternoon or certainly within this next week wage. I think there would be reason to slice seed that first of all opens up the lawn. Let's the more air inlets fertilizer percolate better in terms of that. And I think there's still time enough will let's vote on it. Anyhow, go ahead and slice seed by all means that seed that does germinate. I think it will have long a period of time to grow to be up to about more Heights which means it should be sturdy enough to make it through winter some seed that hasn't germinated will lay their dormant until spring so that the job is already done now if it can't be done yet this afternoon or very shortly I would say definitely it would be a good thing to do again in the spring break. I I don't know. My lawn is not like a golf course or even close but I I like to keep it green all the time and it takes a little receding from time to time along with them. Aeration and so on and even the speaking of aeration if it can be done you could Air corps are eight and then slice seed and etcetera or that can be done again in the spring now. It's a little hard to get past what I'm going to call mushy with the constant rains of spring. So I like to get it done this time of year. But at the same time it's like seating is perfectly acceptable in the spring the earlier within reason the earlier you can get into the ground get it done the better because as soon as the heat hits things of course slowed down a little but I would say go ahead and get it done right now if you can your area should be and I'm semi familiar with that. I would say get it done. But if you can't smoke then certainly it can be done again in the spring with pretty nearly the same results.

Zeroing in on what makes adversarial examples possible
"So we've talked about adversarial examples a few times on here in the last couple of years since they kind of off took the scene by storm. WanNa start with a quick recap. Yeah I I remember one example that we talked about. I think we've talked what about it where where you could trick a model. That was looking for stop signs as an example into thinking that it was looking at something completely different not a stop sign Just by shifting a couple of pixels so to a human if you look at the before and the after they're basically identical. They're both clearly pictures of stop signs but to this Model one looks like a stop sign with ninety nine. I percents accuracy and the other looks like something else with ninety nine percent accuracy and I also remember we were kind of talking about like why. Why does this happen? We don't exactly know. And how do we make 'em all models that are resistant to this. We don't really know. Yeah good recap so I think that you could recap so a couple things that you mentioned there that I'll pull on a little bit so number one the the idea of adversarial examples like these images that you perturbed by just a little bit. It still looks like the stop sign but now you're algorithm is saying with very very high confidence that it's a drum set. I don't know That was I think not something that was was very widely theorized to exist It's a little bit. More of an empirical result like people started playing around with the idea of trying to trick neural nets and found out that it was kinda easier than anybody expected. I found these examples of adversarial examples. These cases where the you know the classification looks clearly wrong to us as humans but nonetheless machines disagree with US and moreover over because this is something that is a little bit more over because the started more than empirical result than as a theoretically motivated example. A lot of people in the last couple years have been trying very hard to understand why this is because it seems very very strange and counter intuitive. Like what is going on here. And how can we study these kinds of these kinds of models or these kinds of examples to understand what's driving that kind of behavior and and potentially to to guard against them to cause as we've talked about in some of our other episodes if you have a model that's vulnerable to adversarial examples than it it. It can be pretty dangerous depending on what the model is being used for. Yeah I guess the Stop Sign. Example is a very dangerous example. If you can trick a self driving car our algorithm to not stop it stop signs especially if it's a sticker you can put over the stop sign or something like that lake effect the stop sign in the real world in some way and then maybe you can trick a model. Yeah yeah so none of us WanNa live in a world in which are self driving car are can be tricked into thinking. That stop sign is actually a sign that says speed limit one hundred and twenty miles an hour faster please exactly yeah so there are a couple of Cool papers that I've ride rather recently. That are unpacking pieces of this. This is just a little a little nibble of what all I think is going on in this research space but I think it's pretty interesting. The lesson is Maybe starting to give us some hints about about what might be going on. So we'll have links to a couple of these papers on LINEAR DIGRESSION DOT COM As always you can go check them out there. They are pretty cool But the first one is a paper from a group that I think is based out of MIT. The title of the paper is robustness. May Be at odds with accuracy and so this is the first place where I think we could do. A little bit of exploring

"Fifteen minutes past the hour now on first light as we are joined by meteorologist dean devore taking a look over there on the devore cast looks like we've got winter weather on the move dean the biggest problems today. I think in terms of wintry weather going to be more lake effect snows along the areas near the Great Lakes and into the northeast interior parts New England, it's like parts of upstate New York and into interior New England may not see the snow end for a couple of days here just that lake effect cyclonic flow. And then the storm that's coming up into the from the midwest into the northeast as we get later on into the weekend, the weekends. So let's start with where the storm starts. It starts in that mid western area. Bull's eye on places like Kansas City and Saint Louis could see several inches of snow. Against Saint Louis that starts later tomorrow night and into Saturday, and then that storm spreads eastward, Michael one of the things that we've been seeing in the last twenty four hours is the cold high pressure. That's off to the north is kind of pushing that snow track a little bit farther to the south Boston. Looks like miss this week in New York City could get maybe according to an inch or so in the city in areas to the south could see more significant snow as you head towards the areas to the eastern seaboard. I think it's the mid Atlantic places. Like Baltimore DC, just south of Philly could see some of the most significant snow several inches there in those areas that don't really do well with any snow at all. So it's could be an interesting weekend in those areas. I'd like to hang out with you dean, but haven't got to get ready for the snow. I've got to find the salt. I've got to find the shovel my gloves. Anyway, thanks meteorologist dean devore's seventeen minutes past the hour..

There was no wind and there were pockets of up to eight inches of snow documented. Wow. We're living near the lake so near a lake Thunderbird and shawny twin lakes. There are people that had the ruler and Senate into the various radio TV stations that, you know, six inches seven inches eight inches, you snow snowdrifts lake effect because it creates more snow, right? Because of the moisture in the air accents. I found it amazing that if you've got a lot of snow and he didn't get a warm day particularly yesterday. Because the snow held the thank. But what did you get sleep sleep to sleep? Even here fifty pen. I came up in sleepy. But all of this moisture is really good for the ground. Right. Yeah. "Heavier lake effect snow bands are going to be looking at maybe a foot of accumulation. With this particular burst of lake effect snows, then we've got our next little disturbance that is bringing some snow and some mixed precept some freezing rain all the way down. We start to the southern end of this is in two now north central indoor at the stern Nebraska, you can cut up through eastern, South Dakota, central and western North Dakota. Now, that's our our latest clipper system, we've got a fairly active weather pattern, which is going to continue right on through this week. And in a bit. We'll get to a can of disturbing forecast for folks in the southeast where we could be looking at another fairly significant severe weather event as we head into the late this week and the upcoming weekend. Both AccuWeather and folks at the Weather Channel kind of highlighting they're they're not liking the looks of this setup. You know, it's not unheard of to have torn attic activity in late November or even into early December. And that's kind of the timeframe we're looking at with that system. But let's start with where we are tonight. Travelers weather a service of our friends at travelcenters of America, TA and petro stopping centers around the country, home of the world blends coffee, the freshest roast on the road. Well, tell me something, I don't know. Right. It's already one of the coldest and snowiest starts to the winter season in parts of the northeast the midwest and the plains and we're not even done with November yet. According to the accumulated winter season severity index. AWS sl for short from the midwest regional climate center. Seventy four cities from New England to the planes and all the way back to the Rockies have seen an extreme season today. Eight of cold and snow as of Tuesday now that this index they say takes into account the intensity and persistence of the cold weather, the frequency and the amount of snow and the amount of persistence of snow on the ground. The midwest regional climate center says wind and mixed precip like freezing rain are not a part of this index. So that store we saw with we had an actual ice storm about a week ago. It's not even included in this. They use five categories mild moderate average severe and extreme to rate the severity of winter weather in cities across the country. So for any given location the start date of the winter season is defined as is when the first measurable snowfall like a tenth of an inch occurs. Or when the first high temperature of thirty two degrees or lower is recorded high temperature freezing or less. The start date is December one for any location. That does not see either of those before that date. We've seen a lot of that already cities categorized as having an extreme winter so far the highest level of ranking ranked in the ninety nine th percentile of the index for November twenty seven th the combination of persistent cold from the northeast of the planes, a pair of expansive winter storms. We've had as the Weather Channel designates the name storms Adrian, Bruce so far. Yeah. Gave this winter sees at a very rapid start five of those extreme cities in the northeast have had a record extreme start to winter. Berlin, New Hampshire. This northern New Hampshire town crushed their previous record to date by picking up eighteen point six inches of snow more than six times its average snow to date as of yesterday. And they they log six days where high temperatures did not get above the freezing. Mark Burlington, Vermont is on the list here, caribou, Maine. Jackman Maine, New York City. Well, how about that? This is primarily due to the first storm that dumped central park's. Second heaviest November calendar day snow on record. When they picked up six point four inches of snow as well. As a pair of days were they failed to get above the freezing Mark in that was none other than Thanksgiving Day and black Friday. The other locations in the extreme ninety nine th percentile were Washington DC, Detroit. Chicago Milwaukee Saint Louis, Des Moines, Omaha Kansas City, Little Rock and even Oklahoma City. It was the third coldest November to date in both Kansas City in Little Rock according to the southeast climate center. This latest storm which pushed Chicago's O'Hare airport to the snowiest start to a season records dating back to nineteen fifty eight. They've already picked up twelve inches of snow in an average year. It takes until the second week of January not December January for O'Hare to pick up that kind of snowfall. That's typical winter. Now, your typical really cold places like Duluth than Fargo and Marquette, Michigan, very even in the extreme ninety nine th percentile with the persistent cold. They haven't had an incredible amount of snow, but just over another two dozen cities are categorized as having a severe winter today. And that includes from Buffalo, New York, Louisville Kentucky, Minneapolis flagstaff. Arizona. Yeah. As to whether this index is kind of is this a sign of what's to come for the rest of the winter. Well, they they say they put it like this think of trying to decipher the NFL season. After one or two weeks into the season. You just don't really know. We cannot judge much about the upcoming winter season based on the early season numbers. It's not until maybe January that we can start to get a feel for what's the overall character of the winter. Well, hell, yeah. Because winners have over by then. That said it certainly striking. They say to see a lot of cold and snow early season conditions like this.
