"Hey everyone today's episode could not be more important especially considering the situation. We're in today. I was joined by the legendary. Big Wave Surfer Laird Hamilton. And we talked about our health and how it should be our number one priority. Join me for all this more on the playbook this is entrepreneurs the playbook laird Hamilton in the house. What's up an joining you? Yeah you are. You have such a great perspective on life. I love to get Some of your advice in perspective on not only being outside but you know making the most This opportunity that we have this caused. We have well. I mean you know in a way I. I think it's forcing us to be a together. You know with at least with our immediate family and the people that we can be around and you know normally we're looking for ways to be together or or we're not or were like you know people are trying to run from That intimacy but I think this is a little bit. It's like being forced on us and it seems to you know. Do WanNa two things. Either bring out. You know stuff that you don't WanNa bring out or it's in you know it's magnifying. You know the things that are important at least for me. I know I just really have been You know I listened to the. Let's not get no. Let's not get carried away. This a heavy time is people are dying. So there's that that dominant cloud that's over all of us but being with your family and being in in with your kids and and having everybody really close makes you feel you feel it makes you feel safer in a way. I think there's something about having everybody that you care about close to you and maybe that's why we do that. Why that's why we're doing. This is because it's like okay. How do we feel safest while get everybody you care about can get together and being a house and then either everybody's going crazy? Oh or or or you know. You're you're enjoying. You know that being together in just about what's important in life you know it's like it seems to me. That's that's part of what's going on. Yeah you know. There's a nice balance between figuring out who is actually relative to. You is the way that I look at it right. We're we're around people but you really gives me an opportunity to say who's the most relative people to me and who are really reaching out to and who am I living with and whom I helping But then on the other side. You Know Ver- Really productive people. It's a force paused say. Hey wait a second. I'm you know maybe I'm doing things a little bit wrong. You know so busy tripping over dollars. I'm picking pennies in. I see a lot of that going on in business. A lot of people have been tripping over their dollars to pick up penny's and all of a sudden they're figuring out really what great ways to pick up dollars again and share them with others free for you you know looking at the timing of staging this out. What do you think the biggest challenge is going to be as we evolve through this process? Well I mean I I don't have you know I'm I'm not an expert at all. I can only. I only see some of the obvious things will be that. We're so cooped up that we're going to we're GONNA over accentuate our socialization. So we'RE GONNA win. Everybody goes back together. We're going to. We're GONNA overdo that and I think that's going to be you know I mean besides that you know. Hey listen. People need to get back to work. That aren't working. You know we need to. I mean Hawaii for example Everything's built around tourism in Hawaiian and there's just no the hotels or close restaurants don't thinks close and so people are out of work and it's like okay. Great you know. The roads are empty. But you gotta earn a living to go and you know and and K Your bills and feed yourself so there's kind of. There's a mixture of things happening. There's company there's people that are doing really well Companies that are doing well but like you said something important. Is that you this you know of the year twenty twenty. You know in envision means clarity but you know you get. We're getting clear right now about who's important what's important. I don't know why toilet paper and paper towels are important. But it's everybody decided they were and then a part of its that to write part of it is. What do we collectively think is important? That's a big a big piece of getting back I you know I think I'm seeing more people concerned about their health than I ever have. You know I mean everywhere I look. People are running and jogging okay. Listen they're not working. They're able to do that. But the truth is I think people are also concerned about being healthier and as we come through this thing and we get to the future. You realize that. Listen.

It's just not maybe not clever or something of some of their other songs. But I don't know that's just me? That's personal I mean. Everyone loves the middle and I really love it out much. Yes I like it. You know. It's it's very sediment sentimental but you know it has personal settlement for me is like hear you me. I can never I can never find the version of it that I like the most when I was growing up. There's a version where he screams more towards the end. And all the ones I versions I get a hold of now are kind of more muted. Maybe it was the library or something. Yeah I mean that is a personal like. That's that's it's about these two fans who were huge. The scene and Weezer wrote a song about them and Sort of Jimmy World. They both I think they died in a car crash or something like that. Show like sad. Yeah but yeah they're just super cool. You know. The music is super emotional. A lot of it feels like a lot of break stuff but the great musicians one of the best drummers in rock and roll Zach Lind Disgrace Produce Nice. Keeping TRIMs Cubed for looking after our hogs for making sure that we're fresh and clean so guys use code go deep twenty amid skit dot com and we are here joined by guest pro surfer. Big Wave Surfer Laird Hamilton. Thank you so much for joining us. Thank you for Well for having me. We're we're pumped. I've been binging films about you and I I feel like I've been shot out of a fucking cannon. I hit the kettle bells extra hard today. due to inspiration. Thank you for that. The shots from the neck down so. I can't really see that's what you did your I. You're right yes solid. It could be a little bit but actually quarantine during this quarantine of got into the best shape. I've been in a long time. I'm trying to make myself as strong as possible. So if I get the corona I can just clean and jerk it over my head. Well you know it's interesting. It seems like you know the just every everywhere I look. People are out You know not necessarily in quarantine. But they're had out trying to you know you're walking or riding or at least in an area where I am. It seems people have have all of a sudden decided that they wanted to get in shape and and knowing that. That's probably you're you know that that's probably your best defense in in a situation like what we're in right now have there been any any Changes to to your workout regimen since this is all started or is it just kind of same deal. I mean you know obviously the ocean you know at least in California is not Is Not as accessible in Hawaii? Left all the beaches open a leading. You know because they know that it's probably helpful to let people go in the water in in in a deal with anxiety and stress. And that's and that's why they let you know that's why they left. Central Park Open in York. That's why I think it's important for people to have access to you know. I guess it's difficult when you have as many people as you do in in California about my routine You Know I. It seems like because I'm not driving kids to school in the morning. I'M NOT UBER DAD in dealing with some of the other things you know you don't obviously restaurants you can't go out and have a meal and it just you end up kind of. I would say having time. It feels like time actually has slowed down. You know normally I feel like we're just always racing always behind. Were always just like you know a slave to the clock and right now like things have kind of slowed down a hello bitten. Which can you know can be difficult for people because it forces you to reflect a bit and you know. That can be scary. What do they say? Idle hands are the devil's playground. So you know. There's some of that going on there. Some of that left alone to your own thoughts. I mean.

They're always right around the corner, ready to help with home and auto insurance. So talk to an agent today. State farm here to help life, go right? Even though he is never competed professionally Laird Hamilton is considered one of the greatest surfers that ever lived, but he prefers to call himself a Waterman that's title that describes a person with a deep spiritual connection with the ocean specifically. Layered has a passion for writing waves, giant waves the dinosaurs as he calls them. He admits that he is a risk taker. And what he does is dangerous. But he would say not doing what you're born to do can be equally risky as a young blonde haired boy. Oy. Growing up in Hawaii layered was an outcast in school. He had to defend himself and the best way to do that was simply to be stronger faster more daring than the next kid, those viable skills are what keeps him going today. His fitness and workouts are legendary and yet as strong as he makes his body. He knows that to be on that way requires him to surrender and let the day dictate it's the exact same approach. Layered takes to his life. Everybody has a story and there's something to be learned from every experience. Use your life as a class. This is masterclass with Laird, Hamilton, surfing is a relationship with the ocean. The active writing away, is something pretty primal. And the fact that you're able to ride the energy of a storm. There's something maybe hard to understand about that. But that brings you a sensation. I mean you're out there by yourself ultimately, and that the intimacy of that you're out there in creation. You're in the ocean, where life really on the earth would not exist without. And somehow you're in this soup this thing that were made of I mean, we're made of salt water. I think I loved the act of writing a giant way because it's kind of bridges, the gaps of understanding, I can take a woman in the middle of the country. That's never seen a wave. But somehow she sees a little human on this giant wave. And maybe she has a river by our house in so she can appreciate what water is. And how powerful it is an interview. Folks have emotion a reaction without any knowledge of what a wave is. And maybe never saw the ocean. And I could go the middle of Afghanistan and show, a guy pitcher of a giant wave, and I would evoke an emotion out of them, that would almost be a primal, instinct emotion would be something inside of you that, you don't know why something special about it that way. That, that, that's the spiritual aspect of it that it maybe we're all connected to it in a way that we don't we don't truly grasp. I grew up on the sand and I've been drawn to the ocean since before I could walk on. My mom brought me to Hawaii. When I was three months old, you know, I think it was the sixties and my mom, you know, kind of maybe thought that was the end of the world. She didn't know what you know, there's Vietnam. And there was this all this stuff going on. And I think she really wanted me to have a different life. I think she wanted to escape California and part of that had to do with my father wasn't with her. And so she was alone. And I think she really desired a different opportunity for me. And she felt like it was out there, like go west my child, and so that was, you know, the birth of it. I think that, that when I was young at the beach. I think I was a menace. You know, I think it certain point of. Okay, here's Larry, I'm better, keep an eye on say doesn't drown. So I was a little bit of a liability. I would say their stories of lifeguards coming to my mom's house, and saying, we'll Laird, you know, out in the rip current again, and my mom would be like, no, he's in his room napping in, they're like, no, he's out in the rip current. Again, I get rescued probably, you know, every other day for years. When I met Bill Hamilton who later became my father, the foundation of a relationship was body, serving because that's the most I would say the most primal aspect of surfing. It's the purest form. It's no fins no board. No, just your body in and the energy of a wave. And so I was, you know, at three not a great swimmer. And so I would ride his back and use him like my own 'human dolphin, which might autres do today. And so our relationship really was founded in the ocean, on waves riding waves in my first sensation of going inside of a wave, and being in what we call a tube was on his back, I wrote him into a wave and would beg him to take me out. And, and to do that. I think that was the, the foundation of our whole friendship. And you know, in on our relationship. And I've been needing a dad. So I've been kind of looking for one at least I thought I did because I was three and I didn't have one. So I

They have those you don't the plug them in next question. There are some shows that have come and gone very very quickly as in which of these which of these shows appeared only to disappear almost instantly. "Bill who is Laird Hamilton plank. Evan Hansen of Princeton, New Jersey, and they've got a big surf scene mayor. So I'm sure he's. All right here, we go. First question. There was once a failed cable channel called Genesis storytime. Didn't last very long. It was created just for kids. What programming did Genesis storytime offer? Was it a it reenacted other cable TV shows like the sopranos and homeland, but with puppets and clean language. Be. It was just a series of still images of pages from children's books. So that a parent could sit and read the TV to their kid or see purported to teach kids, quote, real life skills, such as asking people out on dates and cures for hangovers go with beat beat. You're right layered, you mail that. Turn it on there'd be a page of kids picture book, you'd read the page and after a short period of time, which to the next page read that page didn't last long. All right next. Yeah. True. They have those you don't the plug them in next question. There are some shows that have come and gone very very quickly as in which of these which of these shows appeared only to disappear almost instantly. A FOX's who's your daddy a game show in which an adult who've been given up for adoption guesses, which of the twenty five men on the set is their father. Being PBS is trigonometry teaching educational comedy show. Co seinfeld. Or C NBC's crossover experiment law and order and Frazier. I have to go with again, you're gonna go the trigonometry teaching educational comedy show. Co Seinfeld once the deal with news. No, you're going to. All if you guessed, right. You got one hundred thousand dollars at which point your dad, suddenly took an interest in you again. All right last question, if you if you sit there and channel surf long enough, you'll end up on the home shopping channel. That can make sometimes for unexpectedly memorable viewing which of these actually happened on the home shopping channel was it. A after a host wacked the blade of a samurai sword in the counter to strength the blade snapped. And stabbed him in the chest. Be a man showed a photo of a moth taken by the camera. He was selling, but then for full minute- referred to the moth as a horse or see a woman selling jumper cables decided to show what happens when you switch the cables and the car battery setting the battery on fire. I just I I'm excited. I'm gonna samurai sword. You're right. But then again, all of them, really happen. Jogging channel. I don't like they all could've. But somehow I just kinda like this to him. Guy out of out of the three of them. That's the one that I would be most likely to do so. Yeah. Bill how to learn Hamilton do? All right. Lillard? Hamilton is a legend of surfing, and many many other things his new book life writer is out now Laird Hamilton..

"Omaha. Correct answer. We spoke to a reporter who covered the real story while route to the hospital, they hit a pothole and the jolt returned patient heart rate back to normal. There you go. The Omaha world herald. Graduations lacy. You got it. Right. Urine. Two point for Paul. Of course, you have one hour prize. The voice of your choice on your voicemail. Thank you so much for playing Gadgil nations. Thank you so much. Thank you, take care. Another game. We're talented people are confronted with a challenge that requires no talent at all. It's not my job leered. Hamilton is the most famous surfer who's never wanna surfing competition, and he's never won one because he's never entered one. Instead, he spends his time doing remarkable things like setting the record for the biggest wave ever surfed. He has a new book out called life writer. We are pleased to welcome him now Laird Hamilton, welcome to wait. Wait, don't tell. One of the check that too. Because some when somebody said your name was like, yeah. Of course, Laird Hamilton the champion surfer. But it turns out am I right that you've never actually entered a surfing competition. I served in a couple when I was a kid when there was a t shirt for the prize. But as soon as the money came into it seemed like that change, the dynamics and I I opted to not participate. We understand that. It's not surprising. You've spent your life on the water because you were actually born in water. Well, that's why I was born in using a Ba'athist fear which was actually like almost like a hairdressers vacuum that went over my mother's stomach and relieved the pressure on the on the abdomen. So I wasn't birth in a tub, but I did have a unique birthing process. But that way, do you think that ended up sort of steering the course of your life? I would like to say it didn't affect me. But other people disagree. Basic question. What is your job Laird Hamilton? I would see a knew baiter innovation, and, you know, I mean, I made a career as an happily I've subsidized my surfing with a lot of different things. When you serve like for living who pays you. Sponsors. How do they know to do that? I mean, you have a surfboard, and you go to the beach, and there's a wave and you're surf it. And then somebody runs over and gives you a check. No, you're you a giant wave. So we kicked a pitcher. They put it on the cover of National Geographic. And then and then a company says, you know, we'd love to give you some money in and try to get on national gear up again. I just wanna make make it clear to everybody else that actually happened. Right. Yes. What do you think in your estimate is sort of the craziest or riskiest or maybe even most foolish thing you've ever done because you wanted to? There's a long list. We don't have enough time. But you know, I've done some crazy Pavel's between islands I have. "Quote, one way to treat that is with an electrical shock classically. You'll see it on television, the paddles clear, and the big jolt turns out, you can do that with a pothole. You know, coming up behind it rubbing shoulders. Joe Biden announced on Thursday. He's entering a race. All men are created equal now in so many ways vice president Biden just still has the touch. He made it is announcement via video of which he said, you know, when I was a kid we used to call these talkies. And he presented himself sort of as an everyman candidate. It doesn't matter what race age gender or sexuality. You are Joe Biden wants to smell your hair. Did you see the non endorsement that Obama released nowhere to do? It was just like I hear my good friend. Joe Biden wants to be president. He was really noncommittal. It was like it was lake if your friend asked you to come over to like their candle party, right? Like, you have to go, but you really wanna leave with a maximum of two candles. Well, the problem is I mean his connection to bomb is his primary selling point. He was of course, Obama's vice president for eight years and people still like Obama and the Democratic Party. So people might vote for him. This is theory people will vote for him for the same reason, you invite somebody you don't really like to your party because you hope he'll bring his hot friend is interesting. It turns out that. "Welcome to episode one Ninety-seven of live happy. Now. This is your host Phelps thanking you for joining us again today this week, we're joined by surfing legend Laird Hamilton, who has transcended his surfing roots to become an international fitness icon, nutrition expert and entrepreneur what you may not know is that he's also used his connection with nature to expand his inner wisdom and defined greater happiness. His new book life writer, heart, body, soul and life beyond the ocean. Looks at the five key pillars. He's found instrumental on creating happiness. So let's hear what he has to say where I am really happy and honored to have you on live happy. Now. Thank you for joining us today. They dropping me. You know, it's so interesting because you are known person foremost as an athlete, and you're also businessman, you have all these different sides to you. But I think a lot of people wouldn't realize that you have such an enlightened spiritual side. And you know, obviously, that's not something that happens overnight. Can you kind of tell where you know, how that journey began for you. I would have to attribute a lot of my inward reflection to will my upbringing, and you know, kind of being raised in in Hawaii in said kind of all inspiring incredible environments, and I think there's have to always give my mother a huge amount of credit DNA's from her, and and just for, you know, her as a person, I think it's a combination of a bunch of things I think it's evolved over time. You know, I started with kind of annot VIN mind in an interest. And then, you know, through some all different things that I've experienced whether it's you know, life threatening. Things or or just, you know, life lessons, those of all kind of influenced my my spirituality, and I really like how you define these five pillars. What really amazes me with his live writer is that you cover so much ground. And you do it rather officially you get through this book, and you really feel like you can understand I can understand each of those five pillars and how they relate to me. Can you kind of for people that haven't read the book? Can you talk about what those five pillars are? And really how you define those yourself. I always talk about life Lega tire like like spokes. You know, you have all of these these pieces of any one of any one of the spokes is out than the tire doesn't role in our desert roll. Well, you know, and so I think the people they hate speech in great shape and the physicality be one or there's a spiritual aspect to things. There's the emotional like your relationships, your, you know, those how important that is. If things are writing your house. How can you your tire row correctly? If you're physically not healthy hawk in your tire row correctly. You know, if you don't have aspects in your career going, or, you know, how you you know, your your survival. How can it roll correctly? So I, you know, I think there's there's more than just the five pillars that they do. We chose those because those are the main hub of existence. But the fact is that what you watch what you read who you hang out with all of these saints influence your wellness. I mean, you just can't you know, I think we think oh law just make bunch of money in that's gonna make me all be happy in a Mike. What you see a lot of wealthy unhappy people out there. You know, you think that you know, obviously the best. I mean, I was if I was the best they the Dow would be sufficient in you realize you could be the best at anything in. If you don't have good relations. If you don't have beliefs in hope and faith and all of those. Fillers. You life is lacking something there's an emptiness to it. And in the ongoing struggle. It's easy to lacings out. I mean, you know, I think the book is just it's our attempted sharing some of the things that have benefited me. But, you know, this is an ongoing struggle that I think we all are constantly in struggle ends when when you die, you know, what I really was impressed with in this book is how honest you are and how you are at just kinda laying yourself out there. And instead of setting yourself up as like, well, this is how you should do it. You're advising us. But you're also saying I am so human and I have fallen short so many times you does that make you feel vulnerable or is that just important for you to be able to show people that you are just someone else who's trying to follow the same principles. I think it wouldn't be truthful with if I tried to say that I don't have these struggles. And that is not a continual process that wouldn't be honest, and I think people can can sense into zero. And and so. I feel like that I can be more effective, and if I have one person, and if one person takes one piece from this ad benefits their life that makes it worthwhile. Because I know I've been affected from the things that I've learned from other people that I respect or admire and respect everything that they do. And I might not admire everything they do. But there may be attribute that I took from them. I said, wow. And it made a difference in my life. And so I feel like that's I only because I'm a father in husband, and friend. But you know, as it has a parent, you can say whatever you want. But they're just watching what you're doing. So let's try to at least at times the best. We can make those two parallel. Let's make what we're saying. What we do, you know run together. And it's it's a lot more effective. And then you need to look back as well and be a hypocrite. You know, one thing that surprised me. I think a lot of people would be surprised is that you start this book talking about death and fair which is not normally what you think is going to be the the lead in a book that is very much about you. Motivation and enlightenment with can you talk about how death your view of death has helped you in your success both in business, and and as a human. I mean, the fact is is it is ever present. I mean that we're really are the fridge our existence is of the that should govern our behavior. And there's a certain aspect of the presence of death it forces you into some real good behavior. Humility that is demanded of of you when you are under threat, and I also feel like we have human beings have been under threat in in our entire evolution and really for the first time in in our vision, we are have kind of diminish the threat we've never really been better safer healthier than we are right now. No matter what's going on. And no matter what's happening in the world would never had more food in better health in care and less starvation. Less disease, all of this that we've ever been so of Dhaka's O'neil day about this is almost like why we build ourselves in all of this other all news about negativity in about death, dying in whatever is almost by almost interesting, and I questioned why that we do in his app because we are threatened by it. So, but we have this mechanism that is so deeply ingrained in us that we need. To continue to indulge ourselves in it. I don't know just I'm trying to figure it out myself. But I do know that when you are threatened or by death. It brings value system in perspective. That is extremely healthy. It's extremely Riyadh. I have a saying, you know, that that everybody everybody scared themselves once a day would be a better world. And I think there's a lot of truth to that. And I don't mean just kind of merciless fear. I'm talking about just healthy. You know? Hey, scare yourself. Just like that, you know, and have that adrenaline Beckett. Have your system be threatening for a moment? Just to kind of bring everything back down to like. Okay. You know, it's I mean, it's we're fortunate that we're not being threatened in that we have not all of us are be written in that we have in our health in that we have our our family in all these things in the ninth inning of that, you know, a friend who says pass, but you know, us to talk about in business. He said, you know, he being big deal and people be flipping out. He. Be like this is not life threatening. I was in the war. He that's what he said. He is using the grain Warren. He was like, you know, this is after being warriors. I this is threatening. Like, you realize this is not we're not this is life threatening. This is just we're going to succeed or fail. I think I think how that perspective that healthy perspective, which unit position power end. You'll end up succeeding better when you come into the association with that mindset. He think your time is a surfer like you have taken on some big waves. You've taken on some dangerous situations. Do you think that helped form that viewpoint? Absolutely. I mean, my first of all I mean, I've had a high have had more than my share of of, you know, life threatening situations where I thought well, this looks like it's going to be the end and had time to think about heading extended ones weight loss to see kind of scenarios had ones where I was being held under thought. Well, I'm not going to get back to the service every time I've ever had one of those. It had an influence on me. I I always say, you know, the, you know, I talk about it kinda rounding hard edges, and then my wife look at me like really like. Like date is that did that? But but I would say that that those all of those have influence on me in my life. And there's no way that they couldn't. So I know that you know, the ocean has been one of the greatest teachers in my life is not the greatest influence teacher that I've I've had in the ocean as nature that nature is the ultimate teacher. And I think we'd grown so far away from that that school that school of nature that we've stopped studying under that professor,
