To know whoever did this is gonna pay. During the double murder investigation of Maggie and Paul Murdock in 2021, state agents saying they found new evidence on another mysterious death. Police reopening the case in June 2021 looking at how 19 year old Steven Smith was killed. Authorities said he was the victim of a hit and run. His family always believing something else happened. They said he was shot in the head. And then it turned out it was a hit and run, and then he was beat up, and so the story just kept changing. Over and over. Smith's family, now raising money to exhume his body in hopes of doing an independent autopsy to find out how he died. And I shouldn't have done it. That shouldn't have taken. They did it belong to me. And that I was wrong for. I stole money that didn't belong to me. Russell lafitte, the banker already convicted as an accomplice to Murdoch's financial crimes, now asking for a new trial based on what Murdoch himself said on the stand. She keep talking about what I did with Russell the feet. And what I want to let you know is that I did this. And I'm the one that took people's money that I shouldn't have taken, and that Russell the feet was not involved in helping me do that. Lafitte's attorney saying, Murdoch's testimony vindicates him. I can tell you that Russell lafitte never conspired with me to do anything. Whatever was done was done by me. Alec Murdoch's

"Is who's your Philly the best three year old of any gender racing today? And so far, 71% of you continue to say, no way, only 29% saying absolutely she is. We'll find out. But on this Saturday afternoon, I thought this would be a little bit closer. I didn't expect the gap to be this wide. Because of what she's done and how she's done it. Now, maybe you're not drinking the Kool-Aid. You're not buying the hype that's out there surrounding who's your Philly. Obviously not. 71% of you, not buying into that. And maybe this has to do with the depth of the risen star field. Because that is a really deep and a really strong, probably the strongest Derby prep we've seen to date, not that the winners necessarily coming from that race. But it's a deep field. Top to bottom, I think it's the strongest Derby prep we've seen. So that's probably has something to do with it. I would imagine. Time now to take a look at a couple of dates in racing history as they apply to this weekend and the day surrounding this weekend. Thursday, this past Thursday was the anniversary, February 16th, 1999 of jockey Julie chrome becoming the first female jockey to win 3500 races when she took the third race at the fairgrounds. Yesterday was the 38 year anniversary of jockey lafitte pinkeye junior getting his 6000th career win. He did it aboard doria's delight in the 5th race at Santa Anita park. That was on February 17th, 19 85. And two more coming up on February 22nd. So later this week, February 22nd, 1969 was when Barbara Joe Rubin became the first woman jockey to win a para mutual race in America when she rode cohesion to victory at charlestown and February 22nd, 2003, extra heat, won the Barbara fritchie handicap and became the leading stakes winning Philly of all time with 25 stakes win. So happy anniversary to all those individuals, some dates and racing history as they apply not just to this weekend, but the days surrounding this weekend. This is another day where racing will remember and pay tribute to an individual who lost their life recently and I'm looking for the press release here. But the permanently disabled jockeys fund, which by the way, the official charity of the horse racing radio network. Today is going to pay tribute to young Avery whisman who. Died in early January. And they're going to shed light today on mental health. There's going to be a moment of silence across each track in Jackie's will be wearing black arm bands in honor of wisdom. So I think that's important. I discussed that with Vernon bush in the first segment of the show at 8 15 eastern this morning. If you missed that interview, it was candid. It was powerful. And it was quite honest. Vernon, very open about the struggles that he has had in his own life with alcoholism. And the different mental health aspects that he personally had to overcome as a jockey. And that many jockeys face in our sport. So do yourself a favor, head back and listen to that interview after we finish up at 11 a.m. eastern. Take a listen to that particular interview and I think it'll really help open your eyes too to what jockeys go through that we don't even realize they go through. Some of the different things that Vernon brought up to me. I was hearing those things for the first time. But my thanks to Vernon for taking time to be with me and to Kevin kirstein for looking at that three year old picture earlier in the show and Ricky duke ran our unsung hero and of course Frank Hoff just a few moments ago. Kim prices in our studio, doing a great job pushing all the right buttons. She has one more hour to go because there were three is coming up next. "The story neglects to mention that Calder was also once a CDI property. It's now going to be used by Amazon. My question would be, and this is probably a dumb question. What would people in Kentucky do if they decided to actually sell Churchill downs? Yeah. I don't know. This is one of those stories I just kind of hate for everyone. I hate for fans Arlington park. I don't even like this for the bears. Soldier feel this classic. I don't want the bears to move. It's just, you know, it's not as though we didn't know this wasn't coming and it's not as though these plans have been hidden, but it just kind of leaves a bitter taste in your mouth. Theoretically, there is a chance that the bears could turn around and develop this for some other kind of racing. Obviously, they'd have to get a racing license. So supposedly even if they wanted to put a stadium in there, it would basically take up only about half of the acreage that they got. I wouldn't, those of us were racing Friends. I wouldn't go holding our breath, that this is in the plans of what the Chicago Bears are thinking about doing. But those of us who love racing and have actually had the chance to spend some time at Arlington. It is a track that certainly will be missed even in the later years, Dave, when the racing product was not as strong and it was the synthetic track with a lot of cheaper claiming races, the facility was still spotless and one of the best in the country. Yeah, I mean, one of the tracks I grew up with bay Meadows closed. And there's just no coming back from that. I mean, I still love the racing at Golden Gate fields, and I love going to Saratoga, Santa Anita, del mar, keen under wherever, but when one of these places closes, they don't generally open somewhere new and we all have great memories and it's just, it's not ideal, but we've come to understand that it is part of it. And you know, I mean, I never go to LAX without thinking about Hollywood park. And I never watch a rams game or a charger's game without thinking about Hollywood park. And as much as I like football, I like to better than when those teams were not in LA or played at the Los Angeles memorial coliseum or what have you. But I don't think this story is going to end well for racing fans. Well, three things with that. First of all, any time you used to fly into LAX, you'd fly right over Hollywood park. So you could see it. And it also meant that you were about 20 seconds away from getting on to from landing at LAX, but you had a very good view of Hollywood park. Second of what you're saying, I think a lot of football fans feel the same way and certainly people who live in San Diego would much rather see the Chargers not playing at SoFi Stadium, they're still mad that they don't have a team anymore in San Diego. And you spoke of bay Meadows, I was just looking the other day. I have a picture of lafitte pinkeye and me standing next to each other for a picture in the bay Meadows paddock before the el Camino real Derby in 1987 that he won a board masterful advocate. So a lot of memories, marlington, a lot of memories from bay Meadows, a lot of memories from Hollywood park, sad to see some of our good friends from the past go away. All right, let's look to little more brighter times. And a huge race tomorrow on the road to this year's Kentucky Derby is the grade two risen star, three year olds, $400,000, a mile and an 8th on the main track at fairgrounds goes as race 13 on their card, a full gate of 14 was entered and Brad Cox is going to have a big say as it seems like he does in just about all the three year old races this year. He sends out victory formation who tries to remain undefeated. And this is essentially a win in your in race because it's a 50 point qualifying race. I looked at this race kind of long and hard and I'm not sure I love victory formation, but if you don't like victory formation, if you don't think victory formation is the winner here, you're going to have to use a bunch of them. He just simply has the best resume. He's the only unbeaten horse in here. He's coming off a dominant stake swing, he looks like the deserving favorite. When I handicap this race three or four days ago when I initially went through it, I said plus two 50. If this horse is 5 to two, that would be reasonable. And the morning line comes out at three to one, I think victory formation is the most likely winner of the race. I can tell you there are several others that I think are reasonable to fills for Larry revelli. I thought ran reasonably well behind instant coffee in the le comte last month, silver heist for Steve asked me to sin the debut was good. Last time out, I thought ran a perfectly fine race against several other horses in here, including tappets, conquest who is another Brad Cox horse that horse finished just behind determinately, who I thought was good in that race as well, but did take a long time to break his maiden. I'm interested in Todd pletcher's horse crappy number 12 who is a maiden, but I thought made a big, big jump last time from a fig standpoint, isn't that far off? 15 to one for Mike ripoli and Vinny viola. I'm gonna use crappy in some sort of way, but I think victory formation is the most likely winner. And I'm not sure how you could think anyone else is more likely. You can like someone else from a value standpoint, you can bet on someone else in a variety of ways. And it might not be a bad idea, but I think victory formation is pretty clearly the most likely Victor. Yeah, victory from race definitely has a big shot in this race. And I'm going to use him on all of my tickets, by the way, our good friend James Scully likes number 12 croupy as well. I think he picked him on top yesterday as his play of the weekend. I'm going to go with number 8 tap its conquest who I think was closing well despite a slow pace in front of him last time out. I think you'll get a more honest pace and he showed to me that he can overcome adversity. He runs well pressing the pace. He showed that he can close when things aren't going exactly the way they should or maybe the way he would like them to. He can still run a good race as he did for his second and that allowance last time out. And I think it's 6 to one. That's a fair enough price on this Brad Cox trainee. So I'm going with the other Brad Cox runner, if you will. Number 8 tap its conquest, although I'm going to use victory formation on all my tickets should be a fun renewal of the grade two risen star 13th and final race on tomorrow's card out at the fairgrounds. They've got a big card tomorrow at Laurel as well, including two graded stakes. The first of which is the quarter $1 million grade three Barbara fritchie. These are Phillies and mayors sprinting 7 furlongs on the main

Thanks, Jack will after a week of just fights and violence at a Louisiana high school. And the arrests of 23 students, parents knew something had to change. So dads at southwood high school decided to take matters into their own hands. They formed this group called dad's on duty. It's a group of about 40 dads who take shifts spending time at the school, greeting students in the morning, just helping maintain a positive learning environment and the students say it's working and the numbers prove it. Get this. There hasn't been a single incident on campus since the dads showed up. Really? So Michael lafitte is the dad who started it all, and he said, you know, we just decided the best people to take care of our kids is us. And any negative energy that enters the building has to go up against dads on duty. One student said, I immediately felt a form of safety. We stopped fighting. People started going to class. Another student said, and this one cracked me up. Have you ever heard of the look like that power that all dads have, the look? Yeah, so these dads can give the look. And also dad jokes. The kids say they just make these funny jokes like, oh, hey, your shoes untied. But really it's not untied. And just this little antics just pave the way for a great day. So they say, it's the perfect mix of tough love and gentle ribbing that dads do so well that's just really helped transform the school. And the dads are planning to keep going to southwood indefinitely. They said, you know, not everybody has a father figure at home or a male period in their life. So just being here makes a big difference. So and it's worked so well. I just said, you know what? We're on to something. They would like to start chapters of dads on duty throughout Louisiana and perhaps at schools across the country. That feel like they could use it. So isn't that an interesting story? That's a good idea. Well, obviously. Absolutely..

I really want to go. Visit the places i agree. That would be really fun. We're go story. Do you have well as you know while you may not know. Galveston is considered one of the haunted. Like most haunted places in the world. I'm it has such a rich history full of just like doom and gloom. It's a wonderful place. I grew up there by. It is scary like when you really start looking into the history of it and they have so many go stores. I can't even tell you. So what i'm to talk about today. Is the hotel galvez right now. Have you ever stayed there. not okay. we haven't either but it's yeah it's like the most famous hotel in galveston back in the day. It was called the what was it. It was the party of the south west. now it was something else. Oh the playground. The party of the southwest. What is wrong with your child. The playground of the southwest jimmy stewart had stayed there and frank sinatra and all these presidents it was just like the super duper fancy hotel. But when you start looking into the history of it it's very creepy so it's located on the seawall so it is right there on the beach and we also have like now in galveston they have pleasure pier which is like this amusement park net goes out into the water and it's right by it's like just a few blocks so it's a very popular spot but back in the early eighteen. Hundreds the aaron coa tribe native american tribes occupied the whole gulf region of texas and that included galveston. They were heavily tattooed. Had a bunch of piercings at they were cannibalistic. They use to eat the flesh of their captives in order to gain their power in their strength route so of creepy but kind of like if a happened. That's amazing. I mean i don't want to but like that is a tough ask tribe. Yeah definitely on your bad side. Make gosh and they get piercings and tattoos and no back. Then they didn't have all the the sanitary we have. Now choose live. And then ma maybe because they ate their people and got their strength Bite in eighteen seventeen. The notorious higher. It jean lafitte wrench pirate he occupied galveston from eighteen seventeen to eighteen twenty one and in eighteen nineteen some of his other fellow. Pirates kidnapped a parent kala woman and in response the tribe came to attack him while he was prepared for it and sent guns and cannons their way. Needless to say it was a bloodbath. That john lafitte one killing most of the men in the tribe and it forced them to leave the island. So that's already like this is what galveston is at this point. Okay then in eighteen fifty three. There was a huge yellow fever outbreak and approximately they're only five thousand residents in galveston and about sixty percents of them. Got it and then five hundred twenty. Three people died from it but galveston is really known for the nineteen hundred storm. Big category five hurricane came through and it killed an estimated. We don't know exactly the number but it killed an estimated six thousand people in just twelve hours. It was awful. I remember on this coast where i went online at like the The what do you call it going over the water like the bridge. my god. it's the what's that thing that goes over the water that you can like. I'm so happy not me. It's like a translate no. it's a bridge. The bridge was completely destroyed. So there is no way to get help to the island like it was just. They were on their own for a while. After this storm they had so many bodies dot they had to just throw them on these carts that horses would take to the ocean and they would bury them at sea or just dispose of them at sea honestly but there is one place. There was an orphanage called saint. Mary's orphan asylum doesn't that sound welcoming an order them an orphan asylum and i looked to see like does this mean it was crazy. Or 'cause that's kind of like we movie about that. They're probably have. If you about that. But i feel like there's the orphanage that was scary. I was scary. That was good. Yeah it's an orphan asylum. I don't know what that means. If it's just like the nice word for asylum you know like there's the nice version. Oh i'm seeing okay you so. I think it's more that instead of insane but saint mary's or asylum. It used to sit on where the hotel is currently located dots. The bite of this orphanage in during the great storm there right on the beach and this was before the seawall was built. So like i mean with those storms like when that water starts to rise it just like in the the island so this orphanage ninety orphans and ten sisters were killed in this orphanage during the storm. And can you imagine. I mean look. We've been through hurricanes. Yes i was through two or three while and i we were far. Inland and i was still terrified. Imagine being like on each when those waves are seriously so sister. Catherine tied a rope around herself and nine of the other children to keep them all together and try to get to higher ground and they were discovered still tied together they had drowned or some and so most likely the road to that seeing that win over the water today ask you mean like a roadway above water. I don't know if they made it there. So this class where the bodies were found though is supposedly where the spa at the hotel. Galvez where the spa sets. That's where the bodies found. Please tell me they've had.

"Opponents the power plant had said is that were you know these energy filings that said again. One of the main reasons this plant was sold was that it was really important to avoid some of these very catastrophic island in effects where where you cut off the entire transmission system and in energy filings. They had said okay if we don't build this power plant which the construction costs alone were Above two hundred million dollars the ultimate cost to customers is gonna be upwards of six hundred million dollars. They said if we don't build this power plant we're going to have to do all these transmission repairs i'm in transmission upgrades and that would only cost something somewhere between forty and fifty million dollars now. What opponents chart is that energy. Never seriously you know looked at this alternative plan because they had incentive to build the more expensive power plant now because the allegation at the time. Now i've tried to look back and see exactly what those transmission upgrades would be So far i. I believe that the exact plans for what transmission upgrades we're going to be are not public There are some utility filings. Some securities reasons some Terry reasons i'm better not public. So i've been trying to find out if those alternative transmission upgrades were done whether that would have made any difference here but it's really really hard to tell okay from my perspective. They're pretty good with their estimates. They've been at least in my experience. Pretty accurate what. What's making national news. Is this utter devastation of these communities. Tear bone grandchild. Lafitte all of these places. What's the over under on them. Getting power back to places like that in three and a half week three weeks from now. I think every storm is different. You know i'm in this one. They ate it using the word. Unprecedented over and over. So i think there's definitely room for some There's some wiggle room on their estimations. I i think that once they kind of one of the first things they did was doing damage assessment on it seems like after the damage assessment. They've been like you said pretty pretty accurate in terms of how long things you're gonna take. You know i i mean. I don't think there's any reason to doubt that. By the end of the month these places without power it also wouldn't be a huge shock if there were some delays in that given the devastation so you know it. It's going be something you got to wait and see on. I think i like what did we see. During the laura that was unprecedented at the time nelson took weeks and weeks and weeks. It was slightly more rural community but still was very long time for power restoration there although that was also like michael talked about earlier a lot more like the major transmission kind of cross state country. Transfer down okay. Well michael thank you so much for covering.

It's as bad as as you can imagine And right now what. What happens initially is know the day the morning after the storm. It took a little off the helicopters to get off the ground just because the visibility was still low and so i think by nine. Am they were able to finally get up in the air. And the helicopters run run the roads. They basically tell the utilities where the where the major trees are in the lines are across the highways so that you can clear the highways then you get the utility trucks in to try to bring the power back to the hospitals as everybody knows timoteo. General run out of the electricity going out I think shabair was out. They were doing the Ventilators by hand they likely riding the air. Get in imagine what was going on down there So you try to get the electricity back to this critical Places i but it's not easy. And lafayette think day. One monday they sent fifteen utility crews down. There are l. Us director sent one of our managers down there with the fifteen cruise to be onsite with our emergency operations command center to get where they needed. The people the most and you're seeing videos if you look on facebook l. Us is actually posting videos of some of the projects. They're doing. They're pulling wires out of the water there up in the highest towers that you can possibly imagine and that's our guys that live in this community doing that so we we have you know something. Proud of the work is a ton of work months years of work to be done. But i think with the back to your question we have a team in the legislature. The team is. I'm not talking about partisan teams. I'm talking about you. Know the delegations the the people the folks representing the new orleans area the the baton rouge area lafayette. Now in this case the by the by your region. So speaking of which i mean talk a little bit about Talk a little bit about the season and what you know when when you're on the flight home and when you're get a chance to kind of distill everything out what what stays with you the most i. I'm kind of embarrassed is. I'm looking at my broom here and trying to pack like how i bring so much stop is is is is really asinine shipping boss back home. The first year as i told you being a huge adjustment. I felt like the end of it and i love it but the end of it felt like a the end of the school year and i think i was. You know just ready to get back and kind of process. Everything and recognizing What a challenging yet rewarding assignment. This is felt like this feels like the end. The summer yesterday was yesterday. Said i got a chance to see you and The last time you hear. Billy joel is the Sandblast race went official I felt the way i did when del mar was closing down the summer. The season was ending. When i was a kid as a kid growing up some are starting till down and as soon as it was time to go back to school it was only it was partially. 'cause you're going back to school but also because how much i loved del mar is a kid. That's how much faction. I've grown to have four saratoga over the last three summers and this year From day one regardless of what happened in any of the races and we said this day one. We have ten races. Today you'll see the schuylerville you'll see the turf sprint. The opening day traditional features but tomorrow's headline is already been written. The fans are back at their tokyo. And what that was like last year as fortunate as we work to work so many of my friends that are in sports television. That didn't have a chance to work. During the pandemic adding anxiety to an already anxious situation horse racing continued. We got to do our jobs. And how fortunate we were This massive ecosystem. That horse racing was able to continue throughout the pandemic. but wasn't it was not the same by any means. We've stressed that and seeing the fans back and i can't tell you how many i had a chance to interact with. It said you know thanks for last summer we were able to escape everything that was happening because by getting to watch the racist everyday. Thank you and my response. Thank you for being here. Thank you for being back. You have no idea how much we miss them. Fat with the overwhelming thing. The overriding theme that on saturday that first saturday that cruiser malice that race when saratoga just came alive in that stretch drive it was electric. It was something we hadn't felt in two years and something that you had a new sense of appreciation for because we experienced it without it last year That's what this summer that was. This was all about and Again there's certain way tracks across the country on day to day basis. They go on without a lot of people necessarily being there. There's other tracks where it's different that you're accustomed to seeing that big crowd and having that back saratoga made this an extraordinarily special special summer. And when you talk about those confrontations it was remarkable. How often particularly you just go back to travers day a week ago saturday it. How often did we have these gripping stretch tools including you know incl- including the silence silence of of the of the the e every race. And no sooner had you kind of come down and watch the replay a couple of times you turn around and here came another one. It it was it was just tremendous and the stars came out. I brought up And i don't know if this resonates has much with everybody but one of the things. That's remarkable every summer here is not just here. This is probably true at del mar as well. I don't have. I do have the list but i haven't gone through with the same way but you look at the list of steak winners and okay. The assamese steve. Asmussen and chad brown and todd pletcher. Bill burr Brad cox mike maker. So wesley ward and cassie they they dominate. However jim jim bond norm rob actress. Liz merriman kerry brianna jackson. Neil pessene joe. Sharp the duero. Cherie defoe georgia bro brittany russell michelle ge giulio or first grade carlos martin bruce brown bob dunham who hot walked round table Faust brett brinkman on on saturday. We had a wonderful conversation. Bobby bado how's that for a list of you know medium small size barnes and horseman who won stakes at saratoga. This summer had a little bit of everything. And you want to get you know. I don't know the racing. God and that kind of thing and you can get about the whole thing and those insinuations. I'm sorry the first day that didn't feel like it was an accident. Pretty pretty winning the schuylerville. I know that sounds a little out there. But with the fans snack at near one hundred percent capacity for the first time in nearly two years to see mary whitten's colors in the winter circle normally would said how much pressure he had felt wanting her to win wanting to have that moment wanting to give fans that moment and the fans immediately. They didn't need an explanation. The fans. they're recognizing what that meant seeing those colors in the winter circle and what that what that meant on opening day on particular day and some of these other smaller outfits that you don't necessarily get the chance to see winning stakes races at saratoga. The micheljohn giulio story was incredible It was one of our. We tried to put together a list of top ten moments of the meat and that made it We had the camera on her. I said yesterday we had the camera on for five minutes and it felt like we didn't bat didn't feel enough after the race for a trainer to win her first career. Rate in a stakes. Race at thera- toga. It was great to see some of that. Well spread out throughout the course of the there was you know it was Looking back there's very little Very little that you would like wouldn't change very much. You know just in terms of stories in the outcome of the races and reference. Travers day some days. Some events in sports are really heightened built up and the event doesn't live up to the billing each and every one of those grade one races was one a. b. beth days of racing. I've ever been a part of you know what else lives up to the billing. Lp three lefay pinkai third all the time and What's your schedule the before we before we get that most anticipated at the racist visit of the year the famous lafitte nick luck. Unreserved Wine Talk
"lafitte" Discussed on Unreserved Wine Talk
"List of every wine that he served while he was president. And you can see you provided on this date. The specific date what was served. How much of it was served ranging from madera to the ryan's of roan. I mean all the different wines if he served the volume that was served each occasion. It's a phenomenal historic record to show you how much attention a president of the united states would stand on the winds it. He was serving to his guests at the white house. I so meticulous i. I'm surprised at time for writing policy in that well and drafted the constitution. So i guess it was a man of many talents. So let's look at this. Oh this is next related to jefferson alluded to it in my intro. Tell us what's engraved on this bottle. Yes it's a very old state bottle from that period and it has the date seventeen eighty seven feet all in grave on the side. There's no paper level of course and then at the bottom. It has t j and that bottle had a very interesting history in the mid eighties as you may recall this collection of undiscovered rare wines was made by a fellow over in paris and he indicated that he was doing some construction work on his house and knocked out a wall behind the wall. Where these bottles of lafitte. And other top wines from the eighteenth century and this one particularly had tj on the side defeat and it turned out that was the same year that thomas jefferson was there and it was known that he enjoyed the feet and he would use the initials tj so. This wine was reviewed by all the experts at went to auction and malcolm forbes great american publisher and his son kip forbes. Also tremendous wine enthusiasts a great business person decided. They wanted to buy the bottle of wine and it had been certified. As original christie's auction was taking place in london so the forbes had a museum in new york that they wanted to put it on display so kip forbes flew to london he bet on this the bidding went back and forth and back and forth got out of hand in the end he paid a hundred and fifty five thousand dollars for the single bottle of wine. Now put it on his private plane. He flew back to new york. Put it on display in the museum and unfortunately the curatorial staff in the museum had really not considered the delicacy of the item. They were displaying. And after it had been on display for a while the court loosened and sunk inside the bottle and the contents were destroyed. So is a very expensive investment that was lost and then to compound things. Another wine collector purchased some bottles that were believed to have been from thomas jefferson and he wasn't sure so he hired a team including former fbi forensic agents track the bottle in to find out what was happening in turned out. They discovered that the graving was not done by hand. It was done by a power tool and no power goals existed of course in history and the bottles were fake and the are that the other bottles as well. we're fake and that word got back to mocking forbes so he had a great line he just dismissed the whole thing and he said i just wish thomas jefferson had drank the damn bottle. I hope. Gosh that's a great story. Oh my gosh one of those bottles. Is that the basis for the book. Billionaire's vinegar exactly greener vinegar talks about this bottle and other ones that. A fellow named coke from florida. Who is an incredible line collector who would purchase number of these bottles and he was determined to get to the truth and he's the one who hired the experts to trace this. Get to a final decision on. Well if you have the means to buy the mine. I'm sure you have the means to investigate it so on him all right. Well let's keep going to the seventh president of the united states. Andrew jackson tell us about the inauguration and his love for wine. Well jackson was considered a kind of a frontier common man. That was kind of a term used to describe him. He decided that he wanted to have an open inauguration so they basically get to open. The gates of the white house opened the doors. The white house in that anybody who wanted to and it turned into a drunken brawl. People were jammed in the place. They were pulling drawers out to see what was in there. They were crawling in and out of the windows. It was a absolute masks. It was out of control end smartly. The path in the white house decided the only way to end. It was to take the alcohol out of the white house was being served and put it in the front lawn and that would move the crowd outside because they wanted to drink more so they finally were able to get things under control by moving the alcohol outside so the crowd could drink it there but despite his reputation as a common frontier man jackson was ranked pretty high when it came to the president and the amount of wine they served in the quality of line they served. He made sure his guest for after the inaugural were well entertained. Well as he himself was did he. Die of gout steph over the president's Died of doubt into roasted the liver so there may have been indulging a little bit too much alcohol time very dedicated to making sure everyone had a good time at the way gus. Now we get the opposite. Extreme with rutherford b hayes. The nineteenth president eighteen seventy seven to eighteen eighty one. His wife had a nickname. Well i think a lot of us know that prohibitions took place. The united states and that was nineteen twenty and eighteen thirty three where the constitution lod alcohol. But before that there was a movement called the temperance movement and it was kind of somewhat religious driven and woven and out of politics and different regions of the country but the temperance movement gained strength the different periods and rutherford b. Hayes was president during a time when the temperance movement was strong and his wife. Lucy hayes was one of the temperance leaders and they had a dilemma. Because at the beginning of his administration in eighteen seventy seven there was a very important state visit. There was coming to the white house it was. The son of the russians are who at that time that was very important relationship. The united states and the diplomats were saying. Of course you must serve alcohol. This is a visiting head of state. It will be full pau if we did not and she was hesitant but the haze is finally relented and allowed the alcohol to be served. It was the only time during the entire presence for four years at alcohol is allowed in the white house. And this hayes. Lucy hayes took this beautiful glassware that we're talking about earlier these decanters and beautiful glasses and she used them only for their service to fruit juice so she was given the nickname lemonade. Lucy differ fruit juice. That served at the white house. Well that would be no fun there you go. You have all types. This whole range is just amazing in terms of presidents in their relationships to wine. now president. Woodrow wilson what did he do. The vol stock act was the one that enacted prohibition but what did he do on the first. I guess reading if you call it of the bolstered at what was his approach. That's as far as we're talking about a moment ago. That's when prohibition officially began which was constitutional amendment was passed and then the allston act.

"It's like it's crazy getting to stories. Okay so i. I'm going to be talking to everyone about the fillet. That's my french coming out. I took two weeks of Duolingo ready so too. I talk about the way. I we have to talk about. Jean lafitte. who was the famous pirate. That i'm sure a lot of people heard about now. I've heard of him. And i don't know if you have or not but i don't know much about him but what's interesting is that he was kind of a horrible pirate movie but also kind of glorified like i think. There's statues of him. So i was like what's the deal. Well he's an asshole but there is one reason somebody get into his history a little bit because it ties directly into the fillet. So this is the best i have ever done because munching down on. It is really good so good. Wants the recipe. I can send you away. But it's very easy. Just look old-fashioned cajun cake. That's a good idea. We should take a picture of two and not in its vomit form but in its yum form so anyway john feats life is actually pretty mysterious. We know some things and not others and some are speculation. For example he was born in around seventeen eighty in either france or saint. Dominique with modern day haiti. So he's either born here or all the way across the world over here eighty as a french speaking country that is true that is true and little is known about his early life by eighteen ten he operated as a pirate in louisiana. His main commodity was african slaves because the united states outlawed international slave imports in eighteen. O eight so laffite. Purchase slaves in the west indies where they were cheap and then smuggled them into louisiana where they were expensive because of this federal ban on slave imports. So i actually wrote so seriously fucking good sentiment now then was so why is he. Kind of glorified will it turns out. He did actually help the. Us win the war of eighteen twelve and it was against the british will. The british apparently went to feed. Because they're like oh he's this pirate. Who knows the area and he kind of you know doing things behind the us back. Hey john the feet help us and john the feet actually was like ok and he snuck and went to the us and was basically like..

"I'm so excited for this because I. Admittedly have never been to New Orleans. Although many Louisianans. Oh, Lord, what's the Deborah and we're going to get into that I got. Using Indians Louisianans have told me like. Oh, you gotta get down there and have some shrimp to fe. experienced the joy of New Orleans, so. Yeah, yeah, I just allow me to bathe in the knowledge of the south. I was you in crab? Boil right now. Sounds a little painful. Be Baptized and Gumbo. Is that service you provide in your church Father Brad. I cook. I Cook like the other day. I went over in at a social distance, sat and and prisoners, driveway and boiled to Sachse, crawfish and like just gave it to him and sat at. It's socially distant. Right off, but so I I do do that, but they usually eat it. They don't pour it on their head or it on themselves. I mean that's the waste, so that's understandable. Who Hey please. The floor is yours Sir Nice okay, so we're gonNA start with pronunciation. Very while the city derives its name from the city of early-on, France. It's not pronounced that way or else people think you are conceded. I'm in New Orleans. So, it's some other mistaken. Situations are new, Orleans or even worse knowledge wins okay. That's very touristy. Okay, One's going around. Saying Nolan's in New Orleans like when we kept referring to Chicago is Chinatown. From What he says, so the best way to say New Orleans is just a smash two words together and just say New Orleans. Let's try like Toronto. Toronto Yeah Yeah. New Orleans okay, and if you live in new, Orleans you're a newer Linian. Okay important, okay, so history! I think it's historically interesting because it's. It's kind of very different from a lot of the country, our country. As is the case with most of the Americas the human history of South Louisiana begins with native Americans right. There were there. And the major tribes inhabiting the area, or the president. Of President of the Chitter Maka and the choctaw tribes, and what's cool is the chicken Maka are the only native tribe of Louisiana. He's still inhabit part of their ancestral land, so we still have people who are a part of the tribe that still inhabit where their ancestors lift our. And many of the rivers streets still bear their the language of the choctaw. For instance there's a street called Chop Tulips, which is just really hard to pronounce even harder to spell. But it is right there on the river, and a lot of stuff is on top of tulips now it's. Exploding section of the city and that's actually a choctaw word. It's not French anish or Haitian or anything. okay. New Orleans. As we know it now is the result of a French colony. Probably know that is founded in seventeen eighteen by Montreal Frenchman and this is you know. French people have these long names a John. Baptiste Lemond be in Ville. But we just call him. Be in Ville feels like a the founder of New Orleans. Chose New Orleans because of the high elevation like where it's at. It's actually has a natural levee where it's located like the French quarter now is where the original spotless, and it didn't flood during Katrina so the French quarter didn't flood. who was all the surrounding areas that flooded? Okay so the land itself is a natural. Levian protected it from the floodwaters exactly. Of Us. WHO. Are probably thinking well. It's at the mouth of the Mississippi right like exactly. something. It's it's not exactly right there. Most of the city. We'll get to that the geography of it. Or geology of it, but it's that section. He chose wisely I mean he chose it for a reason right, so it's a little higher than all the other areas, but it's near strategic waterways. Help it with its. It was considered a port at the beginning I. It's still is, but it was. It was supposed to be the gateway to. Louisiana territory. Okay, so in seventeen twenty two. It was made the capital of French Louisiana though it struggled at first we think of new. Orleans a super touristy, like a great place to go experience, culture and music, but that wasn't the case at the beginning. It was on the outskirts. It was very rustic There's a one of my favorite quotes from missionary priest. Who is there in seventeen twenty one? And this is his quote about New Orleans. He says it's a place of one hundred wretched hovels in malaria, sweat, thicket of willows and Dwarf Palmettos, infested by serpents and alligators. That sounds disgusting. Florida. Things are. A minus the malaria pretty much pretty much accurate even. Mosquitoes. So yeah, that was it wasn't. It wasn't always the tourist destination so and it was French colony until seventeen, sixty three, when very confusing land trades from treaties from the French and Indian war, which not going to explain it I don't quite frankly because I don't understand but that resulted in Spain so seventeen, sixty three Spain, the kingdom of Spain like the monarchy took over. and. They got the territory west of the Mississippi, so Spain got all the territory in the Louisiana territory west of the Mississippi. Plus, New Orleans in Britain got east of the Mississippi minus northern New Orleans this little bitty section. That Spain was like now we want that. which is kind of important because Britain? Never controlled New Orleans. They never controlled it, which is kind of like a point of pride for us. I mean with the French and British kind of beef, but but also because later, and we'll get to the battle in Orleans. We. We fought back the British. In the battle of eighteen twelve at the battle, yeah, that way you can twelve okay, so all in all New Orleans has been under the control of the following. People's the Chitty Maka the monarchy of France. The monarchy of Spain. And then it went back to the Republika France this is post, French Revolution Right Oh early eighteen hundreds and then. U. S. A.. And in eighteen O, three right with the signing the Louisiana purchase the first major event in US new, Orleans, history was in eighteen, fifteen at the end of the war of eighteen twelve, so US forces the militias of New Orleans so just regular new Orleanians like picking up arms, and even a pirate, so there's a famous pirate named John Lafitte. Have you ever heard of John Lafitte Yes, and the BARATARIA. There were basically I mean we were taking every body. And just throwing them at the British we're like we are not letting them. Take the French quarter. Okay, and so they they set up in this place called Shell met, which is really really marshy it's south of New Orleans. and. We fought them back in and actually they were led by Andrew Jackson so old hickory himself.
