Reinhart the hero, as Panthers top Leafs in OT for 3-0 lead
"Sam Reinhart scored a three O two of overtime to give the Florida Panthers a three two one over the Maple Leafs, taking a three games to none series lead. Reinhardt's wrap around beat Joseph wall for his 5th goal of the postseason. We've had a lot of guys stepping up at big moments and we're all trying to execute the same game plan out the end of the day. As I do declare and Carter ver hankey were the other Florida goal scorers. Wall came in and relief of Toronto's starter Ilya samsonov, who left the game early in the second after being collided with in the credence. Sam lafferty and Eric Gustafson scored for the visitors as the Panthers look for a win Wednesday night and a sweep of the leafs to advance to the conference final. I'm John leatherbee.

"Jason Dickinson 58% from the face off circle tonight and yet it's been such an interesting ride with Jason Dickinson's entire NHL career because he did so well in Dallas didn't do so well in Vancouver and then comes over here to the hawks and his fit in very well, and I think that's another nod to Luke Richardson's ability. He can take these guys that need a scene change the need to be implemented a little bit differently and he pulls out the best in them. You know, that's kind of an actually, it's an interesting topic. Because so often we've praised Kyle Davidson for that who does still deserve a lot of the credit for guys like Sam lafferty, Jason Dickinson, Jared to norty, is pulling these guys out of situations that they weren't the situations that weren't favorable for them. And it's almost like a diamond in the rough type situation, even though it's not that rare. But they come over here and all of a sudden there are these very valuable players. Now, is that more of a Kyle Davidson scouting eye or is that a Luke Richardson ability to pull out the best in these players? I know lafferty was here last year. And he got off to a great start the moment he became a Black Hawk under Derek king. But that's interesting. I'd like to see more examples of it because I guess you won't know, you won't know the answer to that until you pull out one of the variables, but as of right now, I don't think there's any reason to doubt Kyle Davidson scouting ability, or Luke Richardson's coaching ability, with the small sample size that we've received, I don't see any reason to doubt that just yet. Let's hear how it sounded from Rogers arena. Again, the Blackhawks are the very good first period one. I think they outplayed the Vancouver Canucks with. There was a power play opportunity for the hawks. That's when boriska chuck got denied by Thatcher demko, a huge left leg pad save denying the Blackhawks have taken the lead and then later on, Vancouver was able to score the first goal. Tennessee GOP members move to oust 3 Dems after gun protest
"The Tennessee debate over gun control leads to expulsion measures against three Democrats in Tennessee's Republican led legislature. Resolutions were filed yesterday against Tennessee Democrats Gloria Johnson, Justin Pearson and Justin Jones, state representatives who led chance with a bull horn from the state House floor last Thursday. In support of hundreds of protesters who packed the capitol, calling for gun control measures in response to the Nashville school shooting, the resolution declared the three head participated in disorderly behavior and did knowingly and intentionally bring disorder and dishonor to the House of Representatives, the lawmakers were stripped of their committee assignments, representative Johnson said the lawmakers are protected under the state constitution. We've had members illegally prescribed drugs to their cousin mistress Johnson says, and nothing happened, but talk on the floor without permission and you'll get expelled. Last night is Republicans pushed forward to schedule for an expulsion vote this Thursday, the speaker ordered the gallery and media cleared out as the crowd chanted. Representative Jones posted video accusing Republican lawmaker Justin lafferty of pushing him and grabbing his phone, the resolutions are the first step in an effort to expel the lawmakers something that hasn't happened in Tennessee since the Civil War. "For the foreseeable future. We're not talking about a matter of months from now. We're not talking about even a matter of years from now potentially decades. Is that what I'm hearing? Absolutely. This begins a huge water. Issue. We've seen it play itself out over and over again. Their air rating the water and discrete to remove toxins as creek is downstream from that derailment zone there are stations like this all over town. ABC's Alex Boucher. Too often it seems that people around us are more concerned with their own wants and needs and maybe not as in tune with helping others, which makes this next story about a couple of incidents that happened over the weekend, especially heartwarming. Here's northwest news radio's Brian Calvert. Putting out a fire pulling someone out of a burning building, it's all in a day's work for Tom lafferty. The career firefighter has been a hero over and over, and yet simply chalks it up to an honest day's work, which makes what he did this past weekend even more meaningful. It was a day off for Tom. He had been at the grocery store and was on his way home when he noticed something not quite right in his Portland Maine neighborhood. He craned his neck to the right as he passed a home. Yep, that smoke coming from the roof, and yep, even though he was off the clock, instincts kicked in. I was there because I could recognize the situation, and I knew that I could keep a bad situation from getting worse. After making a quick call to 9-1-1, the off duty firefighters started banging on the front door. An elderly woman answered completely unaware there was smoke coming from a roof. Not only did lafferty's quick action save her from injuries, his immediate call got other firefighters there quickly. They were able to limit the damage to the home. Every time you can positively impact someone's life, either by helping them at a fire or taking them to the hospital. If they're sick, is a great feeling. And then there's the incident that happened in the Portland just to our south, a wrestling team from southern Oregon ventured north for the state tournament, only to end up trudging through the snow. Yeah, it took us 9 hours. It was a mess. For sure. They watched from their bus at first. Craziness

And it's actually a bbc format series that we brought over to canada with a m. I and so you know. I think the main focus of the series Were were following people with disabilities and neurological conditions. Who are trying to enter the workforce all of our job seekers have unique talent and abilities but have had a really hard time getting their foot in the door and so the real purpose of this series is to educate employers in the general public on. What is a very untapped job market of of people who could bring so much to the workforce can you give me some examples of how Underappreciated and underemployed employed people who are neuro divergent or people with disabilities are absolutely. I mean i think. I noticed it the most when i started casting for this show. It was one of those situations where i thought okay. Let's let's see if we can pass this show. who knows. It's a really really interesting and important concept but are we going to be able to find job seekers who really fit the description

"On Lee a place to be. Com slash Glenn That's really what we want to do is just equipped you with the fax so you can you can go and have a conversation with somebody who is hopelessly lost. Even on our side. People don't know how to argue. They don't know what the facts are. Tonight. We're gonna We're gonna help you with that. Here's an easy fact that Conservatives. No, but it's no longer being taught in schools. Did you see the story about Justin Lafferty? He's um in the Tennessee. Uh, I don't know, Assembly or whatever they have in Tennessee. And he was talking about because the Republicans are trying. They were debating legislation aiming at limiting what public and charter schools continue HH about the influence of institutional racism and privilege. And he was talking about, you know, let let's let's Let's be careful here. You know what exactly are we teaching? For instance, the 3/5 Law. And he was talking about the 3 50 states. Enslaved people would be counted towards the total population, blah, blah, blah. And he said it was a bitter, bitter pill, but it was necessary to curtail the power of slave holding states that helped clear the way to end slavery. Um much before Lincoln. Mm hmm. Other people in the assembly said that that was demeaning. Uh, it was, um, uh, incorrect on insulting. I remember when you first said that I remember you saying it for the first time on the air. Really that because the basically saying that 3/5 clause Remember the good guys here? Quote unquote, right? The people who didn't want slavery. They wanted it to be 0/5. They wanted to count blacks as nothing. Why, right? Because because of representation, right and the South wanted slaves to be 5/5. Or a whole person because they wanted the representation to be able to keep slavery. So it's exactly what's happening right now, with our senses are census is going out and the Democrats are freaking out because it's changing. The demographics are changing. And so you're losing people in California, New York, you're losing people, and so they may lose seats in the house and they are freaking out and doing everything they can to make sure they don't lose house seats. The the Democrats could have a hard time winning next time if the census isn't toyed with. So and I look, I learned about the 3/5 clause in, you know, school growing up. I never heard that not one time, and I remember because we do this show. We've been doing this show for a zillion years together, and sometimes you say things and I think I don't know. That's right. Exactly. Let me go look that up, and that happens from time to time. You know, sometimes you occasionally would make a mistake or read something or maybe not include something I think is important and we'll talk about it after and when he said that I was like God doesn't sound right. And I had no idea how to go Look it up myself. And It's true completely true that the abolitionists wanted blacks to be 0/5. They wanted to. They're not counted all because they wanted to abolish slavery right? And they knew if they could if they could have more representatives up in the north than the South. They could vote it out, and it could blow it out right. The and the opposite was true for the South, who wanted slavery to continue, at least, you know, not everyone in the South, obviously, but many did And they wanted the representation they wanted African Americans to count. And so it is a historical fact. It has been converted to this idea. Well, um, Racists wanted blacks to count is less than a person, right? That is not the what actually occurred. Whether you think It's right or wrong. The bottom line is the abolitionists wanted it to be zero because they wanted to get rid of slavery. Okay, So let me just let me just go here with The New York Times story on this, Remember guy comes up. He stands up. He's like, Look, guys, we we really have to Work this out. We have to tell the truth of our own history. Listen to The New York Times is phrases. Republicans have called for a measure that would cut funding to schools that teach critical race theory and academic movement that asserts that historic patterns of discrimination have created disadvantages based on race. Is that what critical race theory teaches? Is that what it teaches? It's part of a broader effort by conservatives across the country to push back against the argument that racism was a key part of the nation's origin story and created imbalances that endure. First of all racism was not a big part of the story. It wasn't In his speech, Mr Lafferty repeated an argument that has long been made by some scholars and raised by lawmakers in other states. County you've enslaved people had been a significant sticking point in the convention. Northerners argued that none of them should be included in the population totals. But Southerners wanted them to be fully counted, thus further, strengthening the region's political power and insulating slavery from abolition. Efforts. Notice. They say this The Northerners argued that none of them should be counted. But the southerners wanted them counted, asshole. So they could they could have more representation doesn't give the abolitionists. The credit of saying, No, We don't want them to count it all. Even though they're people. We don't want them to count it all because Then we'll be able to win. So you're if you're white in this story, the way they write it, your lose lose here in the north. You just didn't want him counted. If you're in the south they wanted you counted. Even though you were a slave because they wanted to make sure they kept slavery going forever, so it doesn't matter. This is so bad. I love I love what Lafferty said. Everybody was going crazy. He said. Look, I don't say anything on this Florida Day with any malice toward any.

"The offshore prison camp at Guantanamo, Obama vowed to close it He never did is still open prisons are still there. It's still remains a threat to us. Obama said. We've got to look forward. Not backward. Is Biden going to do the same thing? Let's hear from Jim Lafferty, the former director of the national lawyers go out in California with his thoughts on that subject. 40 suspects remain in the United States prison in Guantanamo Bay or Gitmo, as it's commonly known, and nobody nobody can recently predict when, if ever they will be freed. Or be afforded to try a with any measure of due process. In 2000 and eight the Supreme Court in Boumediene be Bush held that the Gitmo prisoners access to federal court was not only a statutory, right That the prisoners also had the right in federal court to bring a red of habeas corpus. But it left open the question of what rights by filing such a rip did the prisoners have did they most critically have the right to due process of law in their trials. Well, that question was answered last month and answered in the negative in the case of al Fella, the Trump Case out of the U. S Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, where most get both cases are decided. It ruled that Gitmo prisoners have no right to due process. Period. And, of course, there is no reason to think today's Supreme Court will overturn that decision. Once a front page story the U. S prison on Guantanamo Bay is seldom in the news these days or Apparently on the minds of the American people. Well, it should be. History and ongoing operation of Gitmo exposes the lie behind our claim to be a nation governed by the rule of law. Damn by Human Rights Watch Amnesty International and many other such groups. It is a permanent stain on the character of the American people. Getting all began taking in suspected enemy combatants from Al Qaeda in 2000 and two at the height of its operation close to 800 quote unquote suspects from many different Muslim nations were held there. Under torture risk conditions without any due process of law. The youngest was 13 years old. In fact, 21 of the detainees were Children. Dozens of detainees were tortured. Many committed suicides over 500 convicted in sham federal court trials and others an illegitimate military tribunals. Many, if not most suspects, clearly born hold responsibility for combat operations and the Muslim nations where we were waging war and in some cases still are waging war. I feel the same way about this shameful piece of American history as there's Linda Greenhouse, the brilliant reporter on the rulings of the Supreme Court on NPR. Mens greenhouse recently wrote, and I quote I've come to think of Guantanamo, born in fear and sustained through political cynicism and public indifference as a mirror of ourselves during these opening decades of the current century. Trapped no less than our 40 remaining forever. Prisoners would no obvious end to their imprisonment. Close quote. And I would had no obvious into the U. S imperialism carried out by both U. S capitalist parties and that is responsible for the shame of Gitmo in the first place. Our wars in the Middle East have been wars on Muslims for the purpose of getting their oil. And so our presidents have claimed were not at all at war with Muslims, not at war with Islam. Well tell that to the families of the millions of dead and wounded Muslims are bombings, invasions of Iraq and elsewhere have caused tell it to the tens of thousands forbidden to enter America through travel bands. To the countless numbers of Muslim citizens and residents here in America, who have been discriminated against it work or in public tell it to the Muslim Children attacked on the way to school and called terrorists. Tell it to the Muslim worshippers who's mosque have been infiltrated by governmental agents. Americans governing administration's loved to preach about human rights abroad. Hell, they even claimed they invade other countries to bring human rights and democracy to the countries they invade. Many, even those claiming to be liberal supported the invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan is an opportunity to bring democracy and human rights to those countries. American history is filled with examples about racist nation looking down on the cultures of the countries we invade as we proclaim our desire to bring human rights to those countries. It is a lie. There invaded on Lee for geopolitical advantage. And for the rich resource is those countries contain make no mistake about it. It is because the men held in Guantanamo are prisoners and people of color and seemed to be of an inferior culture to the white Western culture of America that allows America to continue holding those still in Guantanamo, with no end in sight to their imprisonment. Or to our immorality and shame. There's all who hear this to contact their congressional representatives demanding freedom for all those still being held it get Bo and demanding that our country returned them to their countries of origin or to any other suitable country who will take them. And demanding as well that Gitmo itself be permanently closed. On Lee by keeping the American people aware of this shameful story and then mobilizing ourselves to bring sufficient pressure on our government to finally close.

"You like Syriza's. We have a special place for attorney and Professor Ha Lima Quicken. How is a criminal defense attorney? You're not just like her. You love her, and her storytelling, like every defense lawyer is beyond belief. Stay with us. I'm New York City attorney and author Michael Steven Smith and I'm New York City attorney and activist Heidi Bogosian. Way go now to hear national lawyer's young leader. Attorney Jim Lafferty from Los Angeles with his guest editorial in an article in The New York Times of December. 14th appears this thought quote. The meeting of the Electoral College is an important moment in American democracy, close quote. In truth, While the meeting of the Electoral College is an important moment, it's important really lies and demonstrating that the United States of America is not a democracy. We too often forget that the founders of the United States did not create a true democracy. All compared to the countries they left behind. America was a more democratic nation, but to call that democracy is grossly unfair to the very concept of what constitutes a true democracy. And lack of truly democratic intentions by the founders goes way beyond the Electoral College is rule in the election of the president. It includes a constitutional construct, where initially on Lee property owners could vote and that while counting black people as on Lee, fractional human beings for purposes of apportioning governmental representation. Nevertheless, by counting them, it all added to the amount of representation of slave owners in the House of Representatives. We have a constitution that gives every state no matter the size of its population. Two senators As a result, the 26th least populated states have as many senators as the 20 more for most populated states, putting allied to the notion that in America it is one person, one vote. Hell, New York City has a larger population that a couple of dozen states Of course, the pact that America is not a true democracy goes way beyond the lack of true democratic intent on the part of our founders. There is the matter of Jerry Mandarin. Whereby the particular party in control of the state's legislature can draw up federal voting district so as to ensure the party in power stays in power. And has an unequal amount of congressional power. Yet another way of putting a lie to the notion of one person, one vote. Into thick of the multitude of our current Jim Crow laws, laws designed to keep people of color or people not likely to vote for the party in power. Voting at all. Think of all the repressive and discriminatory voting idea requirements. And the purging of state voter registration lists by the party in power prizewinning investigative journalists, Greg Palaces found convincing evidence of millions of would be voters. Wrongfully raced from voter registration rolls before every major election, including the one that just took place. They got the role, money plays and deciding who wins elections. Campaign funds are unlimited under the Supreme Court's ruling in Citizens United Case And more often than not the candidate with the biggest campaign chest, wins the election elective office and turn opens doors to all sorts of ways for elected officials to earn millions of dollars for their own. Personal campaign Treasuries. No wonder then that over 50% of the members of the U. S. Congress today are worth at least $1 million, With dozens worth many, many millions more. Given that this is and always has been a capitalist nation. It only follows naturally that it would not be a true democracy follows. Naturally, that is my only client is Britain. America is not a democracy. It is instead a quote unquote corporate oligarchy. And if the politician that a member of the corporate oligarchy buys does not perform as promised, they sell that politicians place in Congress to somebody else will The fact that our public school system keeps teaching our Children that they live in a democracy represents at a minimum mis education and should really be understood too well constitute a form of child abuse. Most respected international bodies that each year grade and rate the world's democracies now considered the United States at best, a quote unquote Flawed democracy. The BDM report an annual report from an international agency that tracks democracies around the world. Ends of the United States, and I quote the United States is the on Lee country in the western world and in North America, suffering from substantial autocratic ization. And their reasoning for this designation went far beyond the fact of the Trump presidency. 80% of countries in this status by the way. Failed to change before full autocracy takes hold of the country's so we have been mourned. And now the real question is will we hate the warning? Have no illusions. It will be a long and difficult struggle. What cause worthy of great struggle is not. We've got to be willing to accept that only profound revolutionary change in our nation's governance and economic system. Will be the answer. We must better organize and unify is a young of our nation, the majority of which already believes socialism is a better economic system for America than capitalism. Organizing unify those young Americans with that majority and is a diehard members of the Democratic Party who also believed socialism is the best way forward. Our nation's changing demographic realities On our side. Other people's and other nations have struggled and turned their countries into true democracy. So history itself is on our side. A future of economic justice can be hard, but only if we organize and fight like hell for it. And our lawyers. You're.

"When he started seeing. What are you doing she said. I it's mike's part and you don't do that like i. Just don't do that like that. Just hurt really bad to watch like i. I've i tear up multiple occasions in this in this movie. I don't know like a lot of other people do. But that's one of the moments is Oscar isaac just like a very good actor. He conveys the emotion of hurt an emptiness so well not seen. I think that's the scene where i really i mean i. I hate him. The most in that scene. I think just because like after like the gore friends have done so much for him and he's crashed a dinner party with some with some friends of theirs and and then after that he makes her cry and storms out and then tries to stay with them a week later. Like it's it's clue that he's he's in a dark place. But i i really hate him in that part of the movie. That's that's the part that i find him. The most sympathetic funniest thing is we have completely different opinions on that dot for. Yeah no i. I think the the fact that the dude committed suicide. I think that does imply that there were some hard times before it wasn't like things. Were easy but it seems like it seemed like at least there was some optimism whereas now there's there's not the hope of a brighter future that he has I have my next note just really great moment in the movie was when when lewin goes to al cody's and then he has like all of his albums in the box and then he tries to with them under the table and he sees the alcove has the exact same thing right rare. It was like a pretty cool moment. It's like oh maybe cody has a similar story. I think the implication there is just like literally like so many people that are trying to make it in the city in the folk scene. It's so so so competitive Like to me that. Like i just get more hopeless when you just see how. Many dreams get crushed. I read recently that like that. Like the less than one percent of people in the screen actors. Guild can actually a living off of acting which just goes to show you. I mean like ninety nine percent of people that are on the screen actors guild. That just pop up here and there like they have to make a living doing something else and then performing here and there on the side. Like i mean i mean. The same is is true here where i mean it. Doesn't it doesn't seem like any of these guys are really making a living off of their dreams. Seems like they're just struggling to get by and it's sad to think that there's like so many people with with some talent out there that just can't quite catch a break. This this movie is just. It just feels really personal. The may just because of the circumstances. I was in when i saw this movie. Just seen it so many times read into it so much like i wrote two thousand words on it so you have for short list just has like a very special place in my heart. Do you have a quote. You want to wrap up the podcast with austin i i can. I can do the. Scooby doo lafferty pretty well. I was not expected that okay over here. Oh that's actually pretty good. I'm impressed well. U.S. Asylum Agents: 'Very Little Time' To Prepare Before New Immigration Rule
"Kelly there's been a huge change of the U. S. southern border a new rule that takes effect today most migrants may no longer seek asylum in the asylum officers charged with implementing this new role didn't get much more notice of the change from the rest of us according to documents obtained by the LA times the officers were given guidance on how to carry out the policy just hours before it was set to take effect Molly tool reported the story for the LA times she's in our studios now welcome thanks for him so start with the role which was announced yesterday what does it do and what are the exceptions broadly speaking the rules says that any migrant who passed through another country and did not claim asylum there before arriving at the U. S. Mexico border to trying claim asylum the United States they would be rendered in eligible to do so it essentially wipes out almost any migrant who tries to make an asylum claim in the United States at the US Southern land border and they're very few exceptions and they're extremely narrow one is that you would have to prove that you're a victim of a severe trafficking incident another and this is my favorite is that you could have only transited through a handful of countries around the world that are not signatories to the international conventions on refugees with international conventions against torture so if you somehow manage to directly come from North Korea or Myanmar you might potentially still be eligible for asylum the United States so essentially this and the practice of being able to apply for asylum at the US southern border what is the trump administration's stated goal with this from the very beginning of the trump administration has said that they wanted to target illegal immigration but many the policies and actually targeted legal immigration and asylum is that category the backlog is immense I believe it's about nine hundred thousand immigration cases and it takes about two years an asylum applications have dramatically gone up in the United States and so the goal here essentially is to end the silence describe the documents that you got hold of that are providing guidance to the US officers at the border now charged with carrying out this new role right one of the biggest questions yesterday so it this rule publishes in the Federal Register at nine in the morning there's a joint statement from homeland security in the department of justice other than that there was no insight no guidance that we were aware of and from the sources that we were talking to the people who are charged with implementing this policy as to how the heck we're going to be implementing it as of today when it took affect us a very late last night essentially all personnel in the asylum office at U. S. C. I. S. which is the agency under homeland security this charged with administering immigration benefits the legal immigration system okay asylum they received this guidance it's a twenty one page power point at their word about a half a dozen supporting documents in this really extensive guidance jargon the language but it's supposed to be telling them how to implement this policy that is going to take a fact today there was at least one senior official whose name came up in these documents that guy named John Lafferty who was expressing concern at the lack of training and preparation for his officers who is here and what was his concern so John Lafferty is the head of the division essentially that handles asylum refugees international operations for USCIS clearly given the extent of the guidance there were people in the upper levels of administration who had planned for this but the people on the ground journey charged with implementing it and Lafferty himself it seem to indicate had not been given that kind of they had been involved in the planning or had been given that kind of that kind of notice Molly tool covers immigration and security for the LA times thanks so much for coming thanks for
