How to Liberate From Diet Culture With Virgie Tovar

"Yes i would have. Maybe you could start with sharon with our listeners. How do you describe what you do in this world in in your mission and how you help us you know. Seek liberation in a way. Yeah i mean. I think of my work as primarily focused on ending fat phobia and for people who maybe don't know that word. It's form of discrimination. That says that fat people are inferior intellectually physically healthwise you know and in every kind of category and there's a long history of where that comes from that attitude comes from the things that you name checked are very central to that history. I think of myself as kind of like a creative someone who just really loves to be able to share that message in whatever medium bills right like if it's writing if it's video if it's photographs. It's if it's like you know my like on the go performance. Art of eating doughnuts in public. And i think i think the other thing. That really is very intuitive to me. But i've noticed other people have commented on this is like i think of the revolution and justice in the world that we're working towards as fun and beautiful and i think i bring that ethos into my work right and i think there's like different like activism politics. Justice work has different tones. I think all of them are really important right. You've got like the tone of sobriety. Got the tone of urgency. You've got all these different beautiful spectrum of human towns and and the tolman ignoring is like really unadulterated joy an effervescence. And i gotta think of it as like you know. I'm like we do justice. The world adjust world. The go world with more justice is a woman as joyful and so like. I love being able to almost like forecast that vibe like i'm like i'm like i'm channeling that vibe of that world that i think that we can we can create together. You know i love that so much and that's something that we try to sort of bring into tomorrow as well as we can bring in joy the work of justice social justice and revolution an essential right. Yeah there's this myth that you can kind of control your body indefinitely right and that is about colonialism and when people of color next colonialism on their own bodies they get rewarded not just from society but but from that internalized sense that were subjugated that internal sense of subjugation gives us that emotional thumbs up right. And so there's this amazing scholar named judith butler. And i'm like many people have heard of her but she kind of talks about like she talks about getting that nod from society and like how that that's so important to the spirit. Even if you know society is trash or even if you know the rules are garbage and you know the game is rigged like society is still really important to all of us because it's like it's like an extension of family and so when you're getting that nod out like that pat on the back like oh you know you're doing your role the right way. And that's what that nod is about and like when people of color enact that colonial act on ourselves we get that nod from society right. Oh my god. I feel like my brain just like exploded right now. It's totally. i loved thinking of society is an extension of family. That's so real. i mean. Use the metaphor of sorry. I don't mean to like railroad. The whole conversation but i often am like sake of society rather than thinking of something. That's outside of you. That you're like icu. Europe garbage. i'm interested like think of it. More as like recognizing that you have a toxic family does because you know you have a toxic family. Does it mean that you stop caring about what they think of you. It doesn't mean you stop like having a connection to them. It's just a recognition of a layer. You know a that's such an excellent metaphor and it's like how can i redefine my relationship in. how can i create my boundaries with this family ice. Yes can you. Can you speak about how you define diet culture and what it represents. Yeah i mean like dia. Culture is kind of a formal definition. That i use them. I think it's useful to kind of walk. It back and and talk about the characteristics of a diet. Culture is just kind of like the ubiquitous reality that we cannot escape messaging that says that losing weight and being thin at pretty much. Any cost is a really positive thing. Obviously it's characterized by a multibillion dollar industry like a diet industry but it's also represented in. I think the inescapable nature of it is what makes it a culture because i mean what literally if you kind of tune in. You can't even go a day without seeing or hearing messaging that shames bigger bodies and applauds weight loss and thin bodies. I mean it's even like the like literally. I love bubbly water and like lacroix like probably the most popular bubbly water in the country at this point in has the word innocent written on every single can like this idea. It's like zero calories zero sweeteners innocent

Now what have I been jamming first off? I usually don't listen to singles nor talk about them. Prefer to listen to the entire project but I am really dig in this new a lantis smiling track. It's classic Atlantis. I mean it has me excited for the album and just happy that she is still making amazing music. Now I'm working my way through royse the five nine the allegory. It's twenty two songs and in our in eight minutes long. Soa Is GonNa take me a minute. I mean in this new world of EPA's anything longer than thirty minutes is a mission to get through but Royce is classic hip hop he is woke af and so are his kids. His interludes with his kids included includes him quizzing them on woke facts. I taught them. It's a heavy won't because it deals with race in America and its history with race. The production is incredible. I WANNA have expected anything less from Royce now Christian hip hop albums whole the broken heart. Ep So I never heard of this up and coming rapper slash singer science rapper. Lacroix's reach records but Craig plug him on his. I G saying congrats semi guy at Harvey official on his EP. Keep your eyes on this kid. So that is the only reason I checked out this kid. 'cause I'm Craig Fan? I didn't learn that craze signed him to I didn't. I didn't learn that cray signed him until I listened to the EP and then I started researching the kid now dudas talented and he looks like a regular dude like nothing about him. Screams artist so watching his visuals on. Youtube is kind of mind blowing. I mean each track on the EP has a visual. So you can choose how you would like to digest his prajit cold world or cold water and if I gave it all our my standouts But the entire album. You can listen from start to finish. I mean it's an EP It's super short. The run time for this one is wall on Apple Music. Obviously that's why I have Include it's only six tracks but it also includes the visuals on it so it says that it's twenty or forty minutes but I'm GonNa just cut that in half because it's literally like a double album with visuals. So it's probably only twenty minutes so you see it's easier for me to run through twenty minutes than in our eight minutes like royster five nine so I did get to get through all these a few times And it's definitely worth a

Choosing Photo Travel Gear

"Hey everybody I'm Karen Hutton. And welcome to the Wu. Today I introduce a new feature on the Wu. QNA as those of you who listen in regularly know by now. I have a lot of things to talk about. Get off my chest. And that's all fine and Dandy but I'm open to questions to so recently. I opened winded up bananas. Some folks what they like to hear about our fabulous end intrepid first up. Is Jim Zuffelato. Who Asks this question? We I just got back from a fabulous trip in Paris and surrounding areas. We went to New York for a few days. And improvisation I pondered long and hard hard about what equipment to bring. How many camera bodies what lenses? What am expecting in the way of photo ops with your travel schedule? I'd like to know how you you plan for work and for just family vacations. So that's Jim's question and thank you for that by the way because that's always a big question and sometimes sends me around the band. I got to admit but I can share some approaches that I've developed to that question that made my gear selection debtor easier ear to carry my mind calmer and my muse happier first of all right off the bat. You GotTa get good with the fact that you're not going to have the perfect lens for every situation and then let it go. I think what drives everybody off. The deep end me included is when we imagine that we have to cover all the possibilities. BILITY's 'cause you know Famo- kills so let it go we'd hopper be creative with what you bring start with. What your heart most desires tires to create from this experience? Do you like to shoot architecture. Mostly Street and people portraits landscapes cityscapes wide-angle fantastical goodness you. You know just kind of make a little list. You know like have to get this stuff. These would be nice. May I can live without these because making the decision about all that narrows the field. Then then I go straight to this one. How much time are you going to be on your feet? Ten hours. A day combing streets Peres hiking in the Alps. GotTa Sherpa Purpose. I mean really. Just imagine yourself in whatever. Your scenario is an include any neck shoulder back problems you might be dealing with because those are huge and they. They don't get better the longer you're on your feet. I've discovered and decide how much you WANNA SCHLEP keep coming back to the fact that gear does not get lighter as the day wears on. Trust me now hone it in a little bit more decide which lenses can do double duty just to give you an example on a recent trip to Italy for one of my photo retreats retreats. My personal goal was to create a visual book of my experience. We were starting in Venice. And then heading to the DOLEMITE's I mean these are two very you. Different areas very different subject matters shooting distances. All of it. I mean for a minute I went out of my mind. What how I honed in was I decided I wanted to make images that it ranged from this particular kind of perspective driven intimate shot that I love to do and then of course I love my grand mountain landscapes gapes but I wanted to make really really strong statements with every shot so I shoot Fuji Film The eighteen to one thirty five and the fifty five to two hundred which is an older lens? But it's a great telephoto Lens in its lighter. They did most of the work now. The eighteen to thirty five did a decent job bob of isolating my intimate subjects. I mean would I have liked more specialized lines for that sure and again if I had a team of attendance to carry my gear which which I just don't have and then I use the fifty five to two hundred only in the mountains really and I was happy to have it Yes would have loved to have my one hundred four hundred but again team Sherpa was nowhere to be found so head to adjust a bit to my gear instead of just having all my gear had sort of adjust asked my vision but that limitation worked great for the strong compositions. I was looking for that. Forced me to make really strong decisions and stick with them. MM commit to them and I was really happy with the results. Now I will admit that as an afterthought and unable to battle my fear of missing out foam oh I did break down and throw my ten twenty four into the bag and I literally never used it. Now if your focus is more on street photography portrait's and things like that. Maybe a couple of Primes is more your style. That's legit you decide. You just have to choose and then commit to the decision and don't look back. Whatever you do set your mind to work with the limitation you set for yourself and make good creative exercise and just know you're GonNa love what you get by leaning into it now second camera? Yup I do on my trip to Italy. I took two X T. Three's you do it with two different ones a bigger one. And then you have a little pocket camera that just slips into your pocket. Your second camera could even be your phone but it's always good to have some kind of backup and the fun thing is they'll all help you see in different ways days. which is what will give your visual story even more awesome perspective so that's my little spiel about cameras and lenses it is and for what it's worth a manuchehr the peripherals that I also consider when selecting gear for a trip? You may have this all figured out Jim but other people listening you know might be Kinda wondering so so the things I think about to our filters holders rings I use Lacroix which is a company out of Spain I love the quality of their glass their holders holders are really really light and super easy. They don't break. I just never have trouble with him. Think about your camera strap so everybody uses a camera strap but you're gonNA be walking long periods of time popping your camera off the strap or whipping up to your face a little bit different when you're traveling so so really think this went through and figure out how you move and what's GonNa be ergonomically sound for you. I use a meg. Poll which works with my really really right stuff L. plates I use Tripod at night in cities and for long exposures end for big shots in the mountains. So you know that plate is pretty much always on my camera so the meg pull works best for me but whatever works for you. A lot of people use peak design black rapid. Whatever as long as it works for you now camera bags? Those are always always a challenge for me. The quick thing I'll say is I usually have one that is for the airline travel so I keep my camera gear all in one bag and don't have things things spread around lately. I've been using the peak design forty five l.. It's padded and I can fit so much in it and it fits in the overhead and then I pack a smaller one for every day what that smaller one is will depend on whether to be in a city or hiking. I also have it. This pretty beat up crumpled five million dollar home bag and I use the beat up one sometimes because you know a woman travelling around the city with camera gear by myself a lot of the time the either or is attended DNA ten because it's smaller looks looks a little nicer. If that's what I want it just has a different configuration. So again comes down to how I'm going to use it. And how conspicuous I WANNA look. Then if I'm in the mountains and hiking a lot actually use a super lightweight twenty leader hiking backpack ways practically nothing and then I use padded lens covers and mix them in with the extra clothing layers water. And you know other stuff you need when you hike in the temperatures are going to change or what have you. It just works so much better because camera backpacks tend to be a little bit heavy. And this little lightweight twenty L. hiking thing just smashes down to nothing weighs nothing is super easy to bring then then remember whether Protection Lens Cloths Extra Batteries chargers power converter adapters power strips. USB Hub power brick for your phone phone either external hard drives for backup or a pile of SD cards. If you don't WanNA use hard drives bring your laptop or Ipad or whatever computing device you like to use news and then whatever other goodies make your life. Smooth streamlined in prepped. For the best time ever. Because that's the key having the best time ever I. Also this is a sidebar. Not Everybody thinks about it but I also advised TRIPP insurance. Make sure it offers the kind of coverage that works for you. Do I always make sure if I'm hiking in the DOLEMITE's little more rugged. I make sure I've got kind of insurance where a helicopter can come pick me up and take me out. I don't need that if five minutes city so you know. Consider what you're doing and what kind of coverage you need and get insurance for your gear to some companies can do it all some specialized. You may have to cross pollinate a little bit so do your research ahead of

The Grayer Layers of Female Sobriety

"How would you describe your relationship status with alcohol? Our friends. Yeah Yeah we're friends. We see each other maybe two three times a week not nearly nearly as much as we used to and now that I'm thirty six. That's kind of where I like to keep it. What about you? I would describe it as an ex that I'm on good terms with you. Know I don't like we can have a good time and we see each other but too much time together leads to anxiety hangovers. Yeah like my mental health. Really just cannot not handle heavy drinking anymore and this question about your relationship. Status with alcohol is one. We recently pose to unladylike listeners. There's to help us make sense of something that we'd started noticing both in our own friends circles and very much so on social media. Yeah it seems like more. Women are openly taking time outs from drinking or breaking up with it for good and while not drinking might seem like a straightforward choice voice on the outside for most sober ladies we heard from. It's complicated my name is Aida. I'm calling from Madison Wisconsin and and I have been sober for about a year now and it is hard and your work kind of mandates happy hours rush and you still have to go and drink with your co workers and when you tell people that you don't drink you're kinda looked at like you're crazy person. I'd is Right Carolina as you and I know from personal experience booze can feel hard to escape like it is the social lubricant of adulthood. Yeah like in my early twenties. I was working the midnight right shift at a newspaper and that meant bar hopping after every shift. And if I had wanted to skip out on it like a people would have looked at me weird just like IDA said NBA. I basically would not have had a social life. Yeah this is also reminding me of when I got on anti anxiety medication a few years back and and initially I just had zero taste for alcohol and also wanted to give my brain a chance to adjust to the MEDS and when I hung out with friends one weekend and they clocked that I was only drinking lacroix. I still remember like the truly concerned looks that I got okay. So you weren't drinking at the time and we're technically sober but sobriety can mean different things to different people right. They're the folks who don't drink as a matter of personal taste or faith or the folks who can't drink for medical and or medicated reasons. Then you've got the not drinking right now hours Aka the sober curious these folks. I tend to be loud proud and in it as part of a wellness lifestyle and then of course there are the sober folks who might identify as sober alcoholics or in recovery free and for them. Not Drinking isn't so much a choice. As it is a necessity to stay alive. Get healthy and improve their quality of life. My name name is Jordan and I'm an alcoholic. That's how they make you do it at meetings for someone like me. The recent instagram trend of sobriety is both helpful and infuriating. Part of. What's infuriating is that I'm a person who has had a hell of a time getting sober and when somebody's struggling with addiction trench the Internet for actual help and instead finds the thirteen most helpful sobriety ditches? You need to you follow right now. It's not ideal now. Who knows? Maybe those thirteen sobriety bitches are. Somebody's role model. Maybe but it's understandable that unladylike Jordan might feel like their hard-fought recovery is being co opted. So today we're not here to write a one-size-fits-all alcohol prescription and instead we're spending this episode exploring the grayer layers and spotlighting some major themes around gender drinking that we heard from y'all the unladylike lake listeners. It's all to find out. How do we choose our no boost choices and what happens in women? Sober up SA- Kristen here's the thing. It's totally normal for women to drink Shocker but lady like rules still apply to how were expected to do it. I typically something like drink modestly less than men and preferably really not beer and well proper ladies aren't supposed to get wasted. A sobering up might be more unladylike. It implies that you can't hit or don't WanNa follow those rules at all. Here's Listener Barbara I- lewd. Try January. I mean I would see this pop up in my facebook feed and I would be so angry and annoyed and not giving up the rare times and I get a chance to sit down and have a drink and ron but the truth is that I was terrified. Not being able to stop on on the way home to have a drink and that was not something that I was interested in examining what I can say now is I n three or so far and then I'm not going to drink today Carolina. I totally empathize with. Barbara's initial bristling at dry January. Like years back when it first started becoming a thing. It also put me on the defensive like oh well. Aren't you so perfect with. You're not drinking for a month and loving it. Yeah Yeah One thing that rang loud and clear in the voicemails and letters we got from sober ladies is how not drinking means dealing with other people's opinions like assuming assuming you're on a high horse or you're bound to be a buzzkill exactly so take for instance listener Kayla from Minnesota growing up. Her parents didn't and drink because they just weren't into the taste and being drunk people as always make you uncomfortable. Although I don't judge anyone else for drinking it's still inhibited. My ability ability to make friends in college and beyond so now at twenty eight years old. I do have an occasional drink in a social situation because it's easier to simply you give into social pressures rather than fight them but I do wish that those pressures didn't exist those pressures can be super invasive to Carolina. It reminds it's me of how some people interpret baby bums or visible tattoos as invitations. Chew Tut like it seems like folks feel especially entitled title to know why a woman is sober or not drinking. It blew my mind how much that came up all the messages we got for this episode. Like y'all get grilled arild. If you pass up a cocktail and admit I have been that griller caroline. And in retrospect like it is fucked up that there have been times I did not WANNA take no no for an answer because our reasons for not drinking are often really personal things you should have to disclose the people on demand. Yeah Yeah for instance. We heard from sexual assault survivors. Who prefer to not drink or be around drunk people because it's triggering or from other folks who have chronic illnesses or allergies and alcohol? Alcohol just doesn't agree with them. The social side eyeing of sobriety doesn't always stop when you leave the bar either sometimes caroline. The claptrap is coming from inside inside the house. A listener named T.. Who grew up in a heavy drinking Irish family gradually lost interest in booze and she shared the extreme lengths? She went to due to get her family to lay off her about it so I stopped drinking in twenty fourteen and that time my therapist suggested that one of the strategies. How did he actually used was to tell people that I wondered because I had heart condition? 'cause I am on medication for something else and people were just assume soon that when they saw me taking that I would take on that so that was what I did that time and I even told my family my friends everybody to this day they also think that I have a heart condition. That's why I don't drink in. Caroline faking a heart condition. Still doesn't stop people from prying they. Sometimes we'll say oh well you can have just one well. We're going to say if I really did have some kind of serious condition and here you are telling Australia. Oh No it's fine. I know more than your doctor. I know more than you farthest I know more than you about your body truly wild and this gets me thinking though. Kristen is this kind of scrutiny. Different four women okay. This is something that I've also been thinking about in my personal life ever since I got married because there are times when I don't really want to drink but I go ahead and order a cocktail anyway because caroline I know the question that's coming if I don't uh-huh

"In two thousand nineteen the World Health Organization revised its guidelines for sugar intake. SUGAR IT turns out. It's actually worse for us than we thought. Too much can be deadly now. I say this by the way as I finish this delicious sugar cookie. My kids made last night anyway. The new guidelines now suggest adults should not consume more than twenty five grams of added sugar a day. Now think about this for a moment. A single twelve ounce can of Coca Cola has thirty nine grams of added sugar. That is a day and a half of sugar. A can of coke and if you go to the movies and get thirty two ounce cup you will burn through nearly five days if you're sugar allotment before you get to the credits so what to do. Well the obvious answer is drink less sugar which clearly is advice. Lots of people are taking because the last year the sparkling water industry hit an all all time high and sales nearly two and a half billion dollars according to Nielsen. And it's why the beverage out if your local supermarket is now jam packed with with Lacroix and Topa Chico bobbly Poland Springs and Waterloo in several other brands. And it's also big players like Coca Cola Pepsi and Nestle Sleet are all pushing into the sector. One of the fastest growing independent brands and sparkling water is called spin drift and unlike virtually every other bubbly water brand out. There spend drips. Water is as basic as it gets literally just a mixture of sparkling water and fresh squeezed juice which may may not sound all that innovative. But it's actually an incredibly challenging thing to make because fresh squeezed juice does not stay fresh forever and Spitzer's founder founder. Bill crewmen took years to figure out how to make it all work and along the way he struggled to find bottlers and distributors. Who would work with them but the story story of how he was inspired to create spin drift probably begins much much earlier back in his childhood bills? Parents chose to raise the family on a farm in in western Massachusetts. His Dad worked for the sporting goods company spalding. His mom wasn't home with the family and pretty much. All the food they ate was local. The fresh thing I remember most is just all of the food seem to come from our farmer or the farms around us. So you know we had. I just sugarhouse up the street from us. We had you know milked it was delivered with a huge head of cream on the top. You know unbiased tries we would make other from that. Ah I think key learning for me was just a very clear idea of where our food is coming from because it seemed to always be delivered from our neighbors abors or or just off of our own farm You know there was local unavailable and just to be clear. I mean we're talking about like the nineteen thirties or forties. I I believe at the time of this recording. You're forty five years old so this is like the eighties. This is not that long ago it really wasn't and that's what I mean. It was really a choice. And you know. I'm not sure what the message message was. We're supposed to take away from it. I would say my mom. She love this idea of being out in the woods and being on a farm and and surviving and off of nature and she was surrounded by friends felt the same way and we had almost no rules honestly we she had this philosophy. Severe that you know have fun. Do Your own thing in be adventurous. I think she's sort of thought of the farm is our playground are self expression and and I think the thing I remember that the farm land just kind of continued in all directions and farmers to the left and right in around us and even to this stay. This neighborhood and in Western mass is really still the same way it's virtually unchanged today. Do you remember how quiet it was at night. From like December to. Let's say the end of March because I'm imagining there was so much snow. It was absorbing all of the sound at night it was just silent. Maybe a little wind I I remember that really keenly and I actually think of that often because now you know in the suburbs herbs of Boston you that level of silence that type of silence. It was really hard to find. We would keep by firewood for the most part. We had a big woodstove when that fire would burn down nothing there was really no sound left in the house. Save your breathing or the shuffling of you. You know of a sibling was it. An old house would like old wooden floorboards. Yeah it was an old redman just where you imagine a Red Farmhouse Big Red Barn creaking floorboards floorboards for sure. So I guess you knew of someone got up during the night but other than that it was. It was completely silent so So that eventually your family moved off of that farm to the town of deerfield which is also in guessing western Massachusetts and you went to high school there and then to college in Washington. DC at Georgetown. When you when you got to college like when you're eighteen years old did you have any idea? What you you want to do with your life? Now I was kind of out of the sort of grasps of western Massachusetts and I was really starting to for the first time. I What I wanted to do professionally and I should mention that kind of in high school and then as I started college I was starting to work on the fishing boats off the Cape and islands of Cape Cod or or like nantucket? Martha's Vineyard is. Is that right. That's right and you know it was just it was just magical you know you're on abode all day. You're fishing for whatever you could catch. Stripe Pass in Blue Fish And so when I got to Georgetown I really really. I was working in the summers and then going to school during the year and I started to really solidify crystallize. You know what I thought I wanted to do. which was kind of try to figure out you know business? That would be interesting to me so as I was finishing up. Georgetown I took my coast card test. And then eventually I got my captains license right after graduation and Butleigh why you were Georgetown. You met somebody who became presumably became a girlfriend today. Your Wife Life Bray is is right. That's right yeah very lucky. I'm to meet my wife Harley while we are Georgetown and we started dating when we were nineteen uh-huh and so we've been together ever ever since I'm not sure she quite knew what she was getting into way back then but while I was at Georgetown. I took an entrepreneurship class in my senior year. She she got to see me Present my first business plan so I guess she had some sense devoid. She was getting into even in the nineties. And what was your business. Plan that you pitch to the class. It was called nantucket smoke house so the idea was taking smoke fish and striped bass and other things in creating a smoke house out on island we were then offer the products from all over the US turned out to luckily not an idea. We ended up pursuing Tom. But you know the Sivas planted for sure all right so so you you graduate From Georgetown in Nineteen ninety-six. And and what did you do. Where'd you go work? So the first thing I did was go back out to an antiquated and actually continue now with my captain's license in hand continue working on the on the fishing boats. You know I was probably my fifth year and so I went out there with an idea of kind of finishing that summer and then and then ultimately going out to the Pacific northwest to pursue the smoked food world or at least learn more about it and so my wife Harley was living in her girlfriend that time living in Seattle and we piled into her sir VW and drove up the coast and basically just started hitting smoke houses and asking them. You know what the industry was like today. Play kit today. Not like it would they recommend going into it and I'll never I'll never forget finishing a tour and the guy who is leading me on the tour pulled me aside and said I mean do you favor never get into this business fish. It's fire you know. It is a shrinking industry. You know it's nothing we would recommend and was that enough to convince you it was at least enough for me to second guess it and so I am incredibly grateful for that person's advice for sure and the the business idea that ended up kind of coming out of it was company called Nantucket Harvest and untuckit harvest offered smoked food items That were already being produced. Even though it ultimately long-term not terribly successful. It was much better than where we would land right okay. So you're so you decide I'm going to go back to Massachusetts. I'm going to start a business where I basically. What like source food food from nantucket and create like a mail order business? That's right who is mid mid nineties Nantucket at all these really interesting producers serves that had gotten to know some of them over the years What were they making or what? What did they produce? Yes so they had you know it's thirty miles off shore so it kind of has some. I'm really interesting. Unique products only only really only available out there. There was already a a smoke. Bluefish Pate Really Beach Palm Jelly really interesting Zhang Jellies Bay scallops. You know lobsters ice cream so our thesis was will people love these in the summer. I bet they would love to buy him. mm-hmm the other nine months of the year and we wanted to provide them with a solution to do

My Love/Hate Relationship with Costco

"Story. This week is from Linda. Horton who you'll defined on medium DOT COM and here is my love hate relationship with Costco. It's more love though. Oh my gosh I can avoid it no longer. I must go to Costco. And it's the absolute worst day to go Sunday Sunday. Saturday is bad to actually. It's always freaking packed. I realize we're all busy people and everyone here is as has stressed out as I am what they really need here is a bar when you walk in the door you get a drink a really. Cheap drink Kirkland brand beer. You're a wine. Only that'll hit the spot before embarking on the craziness that is Costco. But they don't have a bar and I'll just have to tough it out completely substance free. I mean there are people here with kids. How do they do it? It's strange but people seem seem to be inordinately polite and cheerful while shopping here hellish as the experience can be maybe they pumped something out through the Vance dance or there's some other subliminal trickery going on like how they do at Disneyland or maybe people just love this damn store. It's not just shopping for the essentials. Here it's so so much more you have to take advantage of the cheap gas along with everyone else in the free world waiting for a pump. The lines are long but we tough it out. It's totally worth it. I'll get that over with first since it's pretty painful then you drive around looking for parking spot and hope. It doesn't start raining on the long trek to the entrance. You have to grab a giant cart even if you only need a couple things as if you could ever emerge costco with only a couple of things. I mean there's stuff you have to get every time like paper towels and toilet paper. Oh the joy of having several months worth of paper goods there's protein bars. Kirkland brand is amazingly good and protein drinks. There's big bags of almonds and giant jars of peanut butter. Depending on how hungry I am. I'll grab a huge bag of kettle cooked potato chips. OMG I'm going to regret that it. There's yogurt and cottage cheese and coffee. I commit to eating clam. Shell package of fifteen large apples and a ten the pound bag of carrots. I have enough lacroix to last a few days. Yeah I drink a lot of that stuff. The baked goods are are insanely good but buying Cherry Pie. That is twenty. Four inches in diameter. Wouldn't be prudent and I already have the chips for my one bad thing but damn that pilots good. I contemplate patio furniture. Even though I live in a small condo on the second floor Cosco Frenzy is upon me. My car is loaded up with way more than a couple of things as I amber my way toward the checkout line wow the lines are long but these workers are efficient and always friendly strangely enough the line line moves briskly and as each item is scanned. I think about what a total pain in the ASS is going to be to lug all this stuff up to my place. It will take many trips and I'll always gas a little bit when the Grand Total is announced. Ouch but hey hey I could survive a natural or unnatural disaster for several months. Hold up with all this stuff. So there's that but wait eight. I haven't even gotten to the best part it's always a quandary wanted to get it. I mean at what point in the Costco Journey to get hit a piece of pizza hot cheesy Pepperoni deliciousness. Today I will pack up. My car returned to the store and get my I slice. This is not the typical order of events. It's typically slice then shop. I buy less stuff that way. Innate Lewis to say hungry shopping at Costco is dangerous. Oh and sometimes I get a strawberry Sunday to I wait to see how full royal after the pizza. Oh who am I fooling. I always get the damn Sunday. I could save a lot of time by just ordering both things at at once but no so I eat my pizza and ice cream elbow to elbow with the other Hungary and happy shopper seated at the plastic picnic tables with a full belly and car packed with stuff. Mike Costco experiences complete. Oh Oh how I love this place and how I absolutely dread my next trip back.

New flaw discovered on Boeing 737 Max, sources say

"The best known airplane in the United States, right now, probably the world to really is arguably the Boeing, seven thirty-seven, max known. However as we all know for the wrong reasons and you cannot another reason today, the FAA says it found another different problem with the plane, that will delay its return to the air until the fall, at least airlines that fly, the 737 max will fill this news, the most schedule wise, but Boeing's issues with this plane spread through the whole economy from the companies that make up Boeing's massive supply chain to economic indicators like durable goods orders that we talk about from time to time all the way down to your 4._0._1._K savings. Marketplace's Jack Stewart gets his going Boeing's some thirty-seven max planes have been grounded globally after two fatal crashes in. Okay. Toba and March. It was looking like Boeing was getting close to a fix then. We're getting late word tonight on the Boeing seven thirty seven. Max Aviation Administration has identified a new potential risk Boeing shares dropping sharply this morning that is having a big impact on, on the Dow futures overall right now, Boeing is still building forty two seven thirty-seven max is a month, but nobody's taking delivery and few allies of placing new orders that's being linked to a drop in durable goods orders a key economic indicator. And in a very real way, every plane that's punked is one that's not contributing to US exports says Donna roads at Embry, riddle, 'aeronautics university union. Imagine how many cars for example, that a GM would have export just to equal one large commercial aircraft around one hundred million dollars with the headlines. Also, call out another economic indicator. The Dow index Boeing stock has an outsized impact because of the unique way, the index is structured says analyst, Michelle mode. When it comes to declaring the jet safe to fly that sounds like good news for passengers, but it's bad news. "So this LaCroix story has taken the water drinking world by storm. Ben is my producer tonight. You are not Kreider not anymore now. Okay. So were you occasional occasional Lola occasional? Drinker of the LaCroix. My parents were big into it. Okay. Still are and they might not be any more after tonight. All right. So that's what my question is for those who are unaware a lawsuit came out about a week and a half ago, and I will tell you I didn't believe it because I saw it on social media Papa. And I was like clearly that's fake because I would see it all over. And then I at like here and there, but it wasn't only the fake news sites. Like, AB dot C seven. You know? Or news. Now, you know, any of the ones where you're like. No, that's not really a news network. But it wasn't any of ABC network news or WGN. Nobody legit was actually pushing it. So then I might pick my kids up from school. And I said, Grayson who's my son who's the big LaCroix drinker said we might have an issue with your LaCroix habit. Because there is a lawsuit that's been filed. And this is what I filled him in apparently a class action lawsuit was filed against natural beverages. That is the company that produces LaCroix saying that they are wrong in saying that is all natural that it is not. All natural. And it's ingredients are actually synthetic. When you read the label of a LaCroix, it says, water essence natural essence so a while ago. I don't know six months to a year ago. Maybe even a little longer they addressed that that essence are basically what gives fruit. It's a Roma is what they put into their water. So if you would squeeze the peel of an orange, right if I'm cooking. I'm getting that orange and I'm getting a little bit of the Piel. But really what's giving me that flavor and the aroma. Is the oils. Yeah. Putting oils and water which is why you know when you're at the bar uncertain cocktails. They'll rub the rind. Yes. Or you put a twist in it, totally correct. And everybody went oh, good. I feel good about this product LaCroix not so much. Now, it's so fast says this lawsuit they are saying that it is possible that a lot of these ingredients are dangerous including some that are in insecticides. Now. Does this change your opinion? Because I then it started hitting then all of the people who went no, no, that's not OSHA. It's real this is a legit filed in court lawsuit. There's possible that Roach insecticide chemicals are in this. I still I walk a fine line. Because if you say that there's ingredients that are in both insecticides and LaCroix, you your brain automatically jumps to the that must be toxic poison that I can't ingest, but sometimes you I mean, there's. You know ingredients that aren't deadly or harmful that they would need to have either as a stabiliser or preservative or something. Sure. Civil LaCroix loyalists, which is what I'm calling them. The look craigslists. Ooh, I like that one. Thank you. The royalists many of whom work here. There's a lot of LaCroix fans I've noticed that. Yeah. So have you noticed that the that the drink how many people have been drinking? It has it diminished. That I couldn't tell you. He's my son was like we're done. We're never buying it again. And I went. There's part of me that was like, no, no, we should really do due diligence and research, and then the part of me that wants to save money is like, yes, we are totally done in. So we're not buying it anymore because it costs a lot of money in water comes out of a faucet. Did call. And then you can sodastream it, which is just the c o two that you pop into it. If you wanted to taste like fruit, take a raspberry. Right in there. That makes more sense because while while that raspberry could have been treated with something that has Roach insecticide. I I don't know that. But the LaCroix people are really really reaching out and saying there is an unspoken phrase with an occult we got each other's back. So they're acknowledging that there are people that their product has a cult following not even cult-like cult. There's been a loud cry of support from our LaCroix consumers embracing the brand that they love don't hurt our LaCroix repeated Nick Capela, rela chairman and chief executive officer heartfelt expressions from our cult following quote. The is taking it on the chin for everyone in the sparkling, water and juice industries. But this is not a fair fight are LaCroix is made with natural ingredients magnified through love and caring. I get a feeling of inner peace a feeling that my LaCroix's made with innocent avowed on it. I love my LaCroix. It is an excellent product doesn't are innocent claim mean anything. Sound like the water manifesto? I think so essence is our picture word that means knows century aroma tongue smell measured taste and mouth. Feel. How we use and develop each of these senses. Relative to all of the above is proprietary. So what I have heard though is grocery stores are reducing their shelf space previously owned by the cry and there are many flavors because people aren't buying it. Really? Yes. But what is it being replaced with? That's what I wanna know other waters. They're giving more space to either other sparkling waters or because everybody has them dishonest has a sparkling water the lime they're fine. The like the local the store brands have sparkling waters now. Sparkling fruit infused at least absence in water is really big business right now. Nobody wants to drink plain water. That's true. We're all fancy now. It's true. But have you? Okay. So your parents have you talked about this lawsuit with them. Not yet. I feel like care about the do you care about their wellbeing. I do buy also want my parents to talk to me. Of their remaining lives. But the thing is the remaining life. According to this lawsuit might be far diminished. If they keep drinking LaCroix. That's true. I actually don't know. I know they used to drink it a lot. I don't know if that's the brand they'd gone to because my mom has been on this. Let's change things up cake. So what does that mean? They've been changing up. What they normally there normal brands. They've been just on this. Try other brands is so so LaCroix's just basically water. Yeah. Right. The Pellegrino's and the Perez, and there's there's several other brands those are mineral waters that actually contain trace minerals. I'm guessing summer Italian trace minerals, others are French. So they have a different accent. But those are actually have different health benefits. And yes, some of those have flavor others, don't you can get just plain. I will tell you. I actually feel like those either plain water or the mineral waters. Actually, quench my thirst better than the LaCroix because I think it's too like the flavor is almost too strong. I never thought about that way. I would think maybe the bubbles now I can drink. I can thirsty. I can drink sparkling water, but the LaCroix. See this is maybe why people started where I can say it's almost addictive because you wanna go have another one right away. Maybe because you're so thirsty. It's going to be interesting when they start coming out because if it if it really has other things than natural. That's a whole bunch of drama for class action lawsuit money owed back to consumers they've been lying. This whole cult thing is going to blow up in their face. I'm worried more about the cult than the water at this point. I'm worried about those people. Yeah, we're gonna come back. Get you guys to news in a few minutes. And then we're going to talk not only Nike, but also the Olympic Committee Hannah Stanley filling in on WGN for Brian Noonan more after this..

"Up LaCroix drinkers, you know, that old saying about if if something seems to be true, it probably is this is a lawsuit alleging this. So it's not one hundred percent message stating any of this fact, but I do watch, you know, about this so LaCroix that seltzer water sparkling water, they are being sued the lawsuit alleges that LaCroix the sparkling water includes an ingredient in it used in cockroach insecticide. So the lawsuit basically against lacrosse claimed that it contains all natural ingredients, according to the lawsuit and this is a quote from the lawsuit LaCroix. In fact, contains ingredients that have been identified by the FDA, a synthetic these chemicals include Lyman, which can cause kidney toxicity and tumors. Lintel? Little Lou pro Pyan eight which is used to treat cancer and little Lulu, which is used in cockroach insecticide. Sorry. I said those words wrong, but you get the point word scary thing jelly now. Lacroix's parent company strongly denies all of these allegations. They insist that all the ingredients are one hundred percent natural. And the issued a statement to clarify their position this week. So what do you believe here? I don't know. Right. I'm just glad something bad happened to the LaCroix. I'm kidding. Double check. Do the research on your own. I guess but. Oh, man. Can you imagine how many semi listening mornings? I've drank LaCroix for like five years. And you know, I have to I mixed drinks and stuff. I will little kick with that. But yeah. Cockroach insecticide bugs with. But then again, if you're sitting here going, you know, what great I drink concrete insecticide and not a damn thing happened to me. Well, they're good for you. You can that stuff. "Mine is I just received in the mail, the sequel to the run fast, eat flow cookbook, which is called run fast, cook fast, eat slow, and I will admit, I've been not doing a ton of cooking lately, but I'm kind of motivated by this. There's a lot of really pretty easy looking things. And I also like we've been eating some of the stuff even though haven't been cooking it because I put it on the weeks lists, so I highly recommend it. I love both of these volumes. They're just like healthy food. That's actually good. Like the kids will eat it, and the pictures are really beautiful and Chilean Flanagan is total badass, but at least kopecky the co author who's like real chef behind it is really, really cool to, and yeah, legit cookbook from real runners. So so my love of the week is. I, I am so late to all these bandwagon, but the LaCroix water like the sparkling water total parody at myself too. I think about it like I was in as at the supermarket is saying, like in my running clothes and going to the case of the pamphlet moose LaCroix. So it's like the LaCroix's like the special drink, I guess, in in the evening it's a, I like the orange in. The raspberry cranberry. So you're, you're already on this band.
