"You drink out of Pepsi. So it was a win, but my point was he didn't go there and go, I'm an awful CEO, I should not be in this role. It was like hold up. That was a bad mistake. Let me learn from it and reframe it. I still have the scales and the great people around me to do this. So for everyone listening, when something comes, ask yourself when it comes in is this true or false, select the player? He's 1% in the whole NHL. He's not bad. The play was bad, or the quarterback that I had when he has a bad play. I was like, you're not bad, that play was bad. By the way, so a lot of people on the team for one play, so let's not catastrophize your whole career. And I'm going to say this too. You might have a whole bad year of business, you know? We've all gone through it and ebbs and flows. It's not a bad life. Do not let your mind. Again, put a period where just means a comet, you may have to reset, reroute, restart, reimagine again, but you did not lose your gifts and talents. You still have your knowledge. We still have your confidence card, you know, you understand your why, you just have to reset and reframe it so that you could start again. All right, so we have just two left to cover. Once you do this enough and you're reframing it, you learn how to be Gritty and cultivating grit is the next one, which you can't cultivate grit if you escape every time it gets hard. So I tell people to lean in. That's how we build grittiness. And you could do this on an everyday basis. It doesn't have to be just when things are going like truly bad. You know the conversation that's hard. Lean into it. Get Gritty. Up coal plunge, I put myself in a coal plunge in people all the time. I do not want to get 35° water. It's freezing. I'm in Scottsdale Arizona. I choose to live in the warm. But why am I doing that? I'm telling you, it's a mental advantage because you start winning on the small things like that and anything that is in life. Anything that's challenging. One more rep, one more mile, another lean into the project for another hour or something. You start building this mental endurance, watch what happens. You want greatness, you start separating from the path. It just is, and then when things come, you're like, okay, I could do this. And a lot of my friends that are seals, you know, when we talk about what you've had to endure as a navy seal, and they say, you know, it really helped us for life. There's a lot of things we saw that we didn't want to see that we have to handle and it's hard. But, you know, the everyday things that happen in the world that would bother us do not bother them. They're like, are you kidding? You know. So perspective and putting yourself in the hard times allows you to be better to be grittier, show up better and guess what happens. You bounce back faster this whole premise of this book is I can't take away adversity from you, but I could certainly help you build this muscle, this buoyancy, the elasticity, that stays taught, that bounces you back, brings you back into flow again. And so if you don't work on this, what happens, you get lax, meant to relax. So all this brings buoyancy, brings you back to center, you stay strong, I mean, we all want to say that we want to say, I don't want my muscles being flabby. I want them fit, you know? So that's what we're doing with our mind. That's we're doing our leadership, our grittiness, and then the last principle is once you've gone through this, you turn the page. You learn how to turn the page because if you stay in the past, you can not drive forward and the front, the front window is bigger than your rearview mirror for a reason. You look back to glean what you need to reflect on it to be safe, but you look ahead at the vision of what's ahead. Learn, adapt, and then start looking ahead and drive forward again. Amazing. A huge thanks to coach Starr for sharing this with us. If you'd like her book, the art of bouncing back, it's available wherever you buy books. I got my copy off Amazon. We Need to Defund & Dismantle the FBI

"Here's what I think needs to happen. I think that we need to completely defund and dismantle the FBI. The rot is so deep, the FBI has gone so rogue, it can not be salvaged. Now you think about this for a moment. President Trump was in New York City. He was staying at his apartment in Trump Tower. He was not at home. Had the president Bennett home, there would have been video cameras of the FBI dragging the president out of the home so they could conduct their investigation. And you would have seen the coverage. They would have had CNN there. And it would have been broadcast live on national television, president Trump and his pajamas, standing on the front lawn of bara laco. Now you just think about this. It's not over. There's still coming for this president. And ultimately, they want to drag this man out of his home in handcuffs and shackles and throw him in jail. That's the end goal here.

"Even close. I'm going to be honest with you guys. I have no idea how Karen is even anywhere near carry. One reason is because I heard she put $20 million into a. Race that, you know, she had no business being there if you asked me. I mean, somebody, I guess, had to challenge the Trump Republican Kerry Lake. But Karen, in a primary, put an end to any $1 million is out of control. I never seen her anywhere on the campaign trail. She has no social media, and I say anywhere on the campaign trail, she's not in the circles that I'm in. Her people have never reached out to me for anything. Even before I supported Kerry, her team is never reached out to do anything with me or anybody else I know. I guess if you got enough money, you can be competitive. You don't even have to really have a good platform. You can jump in and raise late. You put 20 million in, you can be competitive and get 200,000 people to vote for you. But I was at Carrie Lake's party last night and the initial count care was down by like ten points. And I know a lot of people initially gave up on it. Which is weird to me, but they initially gave up on it. Some people thought the care is going to lose. But what people are not considering in this election in the primary and it's probably going to happen in the general. You're going to have people that do what we call early voting in the state of Arizona. A lot of people do early voting. Our participating early voting. And then the Trump lichens, I called him Trump against the Trump Republicans, believe that you should not vote early, meaning that you shouldn't send you vote through the mail. If you vote early, you take the early ballot, you fill it out, then you turn it in in person on election day, and that's what a lot of Republicans believe in, at least the trumps, because there's been so many issues with ballots being lost in the mail and all of the above, people literally physically need to go in, drop their ballot off. One of the problems in pinal county, which I'm not sure the population of pinell county, I know that pinell county is in between pima and Maricopa, and it's a pretty large sized county, pinell county has lamb, who's the sheriff of pinell county, so if you know sheriff lamb, that's his county. They ran out of ballots, physical ballots. They did not prepare enough. The first hour of voting, they ran out of balance. Now, that could say one or two things. There are poorly managing the election is one, maybe it could say one, two, or the third thing. Because the third thing could be both of what I'm gonna say for number one and two. But the first thing mismanaging elections, you should have plenty of ballots. For the voters who are going to come in and you should expect that there will be an historic turnout. Then when you move on to the second, is that maybe the historic turnout was so much so that they could not have predicted it, which is another good thing. And the option three could be both of them. Poor management and also to turn out was so out of control that they was not expecting people to come and vote and participate in the ways in which they did. I'll say this, I think I said it yesterday on the show. I'm a say it again, go into the polls and the state of Arizona out in the Paradise valley area, they did a tremendous job at managing the voting place. They did a great job. I was very impressed. It makes me feel very confident that we can look forward to better elections. Because as soon as you go on a door, you meet your met with a person, you can't bring nothing in. You can't bring extra ballots in. If you have a ballot that you filled out, kind of like a provisionary ballot, you can't bring it in. You can take a picture of it, but you can't bring in an additional ballot into the voting booth, or into the voting facility. And they check it right at the door, they were very friendly. I wish I knew their names. They need to get an award. For how professional they were, so the process was foolproof. The voting machines are the only thing that could compromise the election based on my opinion if all of the voting poll places were handled just like they were at the place that we ended up going to. So I have to say that I'm very proud of Arizona for stepping up and hopefully we continue through the general election. I'm very proud of Kerry Lake. Nobody works harder than Carrie Lake in Arizona for pilot for running for office. I just don't think there's anybody else. The only other person who's in politics that works harder than Carrie laco worked just as hard as carrier Lake is Donald Trump. Carrie Lake was everywhere in the state of Arizona. She blew Karen out of the water in every single county except for Maricopa County where it appears that she may either have lost by less than a point or she won by less than a point is very close in the count, but she completely destroyed Karen and every other county, and I believe it's because Carrie Lake would go to each county and meet with people in their homes, you know, doing fundraisers, doing events, doing the whole thing that I think that a politician who wants to represent the people should do. You should be there with the people. They should be able to see you. They should know your name. They should have at least met you have had access to you at some point, at least on social media. You should be a person that accessible all of your positions that you take should be open to the public. It should be all out for display and the people should have a very confident and transparent message that they can go off of when they decide to vote for you or not vote for you. And I think that Arizona elections and many of the elections that occur last night, I didn't follow none of them. I'm going to be honest with you. I didn't follow none of them but Arizona because I was more worried about the state that I actually live in. However, I'll get you guys some updates on a few other ones if you missed it. But the indication in my opinion is that the Trump supported Republicans are winning. They are winning. Let me give you John John Gibbs. John Gibbs defeats Michigan Republican who voted to impeach Donald Trump. Says former Trump administration official, John Gibbs has defeated representative Peter. I don't even know I say his name. Is it mayor? In the U.S. House primary race that went down to the wire. That's an example of a Trump supported candidate versus a rhino. And I don't know if these people are rhinos, but you're going to get pigeonholed. If you're not a Trump king, you are rhino. Tudor Dixon, she wins Michigan Republican gubernatorial nomination, and she will face Gretchen Whitmer. And Tudor is considered a conservative political commentator, and she did a tremendous job. He said, according to reports, the time of publishing, Dixon had clinched enough to win the primary hitting 70,000 votes with just 13% of the vote in more than doubling the vote count of any of her challengers. Dixon was recently endorsed by influential Republicans in the state and across the country in just days before the Tuesday primary president Donald Trump also gave her his support. All of the candidates in the state of Arizona, I believe they got a Trump endorsement. They all won the primary yesterday. I believe it was all of them in the state of Arizona. So what does that say, ladies and gentlemen, for the political climate? That says that the Trump akin to America first patriots are the new wave of the Republican Party. And if you are a person who is so repulsed at Donald Trump, because you don't like his tweets, I think you are going to put yourself in a position that you're not going to be represented. You're not going to feel represented in the party because the party is going to change. Do I like everything Donald Trump does? No, I do not. If I was a leader with a lead in a different way than Donald Trump would, in some ways, I would. But no one under the sound of my voice can deny that Donald Trump got into office, he put America first, he did the best according to his abilities to make this country great. "Because the economists said there's no way that we're gonna be fully recovered even close to it by two thousand and ten and that's a leading indicator beyond which we had won a lot of seats in republican-leaning areas that we really had no business holding so the combination of those two things made me believe now the depth of it. I think we lost. What sixty three seats you know i. I didn't forecast that. But i really thought we were going to get our asses kicked one of the reasons why announced five months before that election that i'd be leaving the white house after the first two years was that i knew that there would be a parade leading out of town. If i didn't leave on my own volition being the political guy in the white house. So i had a very strong feeling that it was going to be very tough and i don't have that feeling about twenty twenty two but i do have a very strong feeling that it's going to be challenging for biden just because of historical headwinds plus redistricting much as we had to deal with in two thousand ten so democrats have have a real challenge ahead of themselves but hopefully not a sixty three seat challenge. I don't even know if that's possible anymore. And as polarized as we are as a as a country. So i think we took care flipping that yeah there. There have jack all right guys. Well a laco. and on and We'll see other saw unfolds. Bill kristol newly minted sort of demi democrat. It's good to be with you. Judge at that good phrase. During the campaign he wanted to reach out to democrats independents and future former republicans. And i've been using that phrase for about a year and a half but if someone pointed out to the other day you know there's only so long future form of someplace y- yeah we'll see. Well maybe when you take over the mcauliffe administration that'd be that would be the appropriate time they come on and bill the water's fine orders so so but better than the republican side. Right now. i. I don't car with that. You're going to start off by lying to but anyway the good to see what the cba thanks guys..

"No isn't gonna play the longer game like abbie does so i think with our attack you know. Abby has that ability to play long balls to play into the forwards feet as well in between the lines and so taking that away. I think was a bit surprised for the united states. But you know moving forward. We have to figure out those changes during the game and adjust accordingly now speaking of china. What did you make. Substitution of alex morgan. At half time i was. I was quite surprised substitution. But i know that car loyd is raring to go and i feel like when she did come and she made she made an impact and did well and so i mean we have you know obviously the best forwards in the world. So it's really difficult to make that decision. I never want to make those those decisions. That you of laco has to make between those two but i do think that both of them are brilliant I'm not sure she touched the ball much. She wanted today. And so i'm sure you know he wanted to make a quick change to see if that you know would adjust the scoreline quickly meghan sixty four th minute there. Were two kneel down already. Did he make that change too late. In your opinion i feel i feel like chavis. He knows what's best for the team. I support that a hundred percent But i know that penal directly made an impact. I mean she was a part of the rest of the attack in in creating those those handful of chances that we did have in the second half and so i do think she is an impact player. She brings just such magic to the game that her individual characteristics are unmatched. And so i do feel like we really missed her in the first half and she proved that she's difficult to ignore a coming in in the second half and making somewhat of a any kind of impact for for creating those chances that we really need next up for the us then it is new zealand. Who lost their first game two one against australia. What does your gut tell you regarding. What changes he. It's going to be the same eleven. Go out there and prove me wrong. Always going to change things time. Soclean going into this second clash. I do think that you have to change things. Tactically and unsure of the front line and the central midfield. I'm sure the back line will stay the same. Because you have to have consistency in the back line and i do value those players and i trust them and so i think that he will keep the same backline but maybe just one or two players in the front line and in the central midfield Going into this next match because you do have to create those changes and order to see a different result as big of a shock this is still going to qualify for the knockout stages members fest third place teams as well qualified outside. The this is before the tournament started the four on to win the gold medal. After that result against sweden they've be lengthened slightly. The us eleven to ten as sweden. Now down to eleven to two for you. You still overwhelming favorites. Of course. I think we always are. We know how to thrive under this pressure. And we know how to win. And we've proven that year after year tournament after tournament and so this is just only a bump in the road. They need to forget about this game and move forward as quickly as possible in focus.

"I don't think it's fair to judge. Bell checks Season this year. Because the you know he had so many guys opt out. A lot of key. Players on defense and the quarterback situation was a mess. Now that's partly to blame clearly. But i think brady wins round one Sorry to say one around one desirable. I don't. I don't wanna say that. Bell jack is Is is never going to be successful without tom. Brady on his team Yes yes they would've needed ten wins to be in the conversation to make the playoffs this year. And what they have six wins with cam. Many passing touch that roster is really just not very good. This year. I did for years. Well it had some great offensive pieces though that as you mentioned opted out well certainly on the defensive side of the ball that was the case on offense. Like if brady's there and eshelman were to stay healthy that would always give the offense a semblance of life. Is greg resigning. If brady stays in new england like those are the fact that like couscous. Staying in new england if the same season except instead of cam newton. I'm going to say they don't make the playoffs. They're probably nine and seven and on the outside looking in with brady. This was the first time in his career that he's made the playoffs and not wanting division interesting. Where he's the last time. A wildcard team made the super bowl made the super bowl. Yeah it doesn't happen that often or the eagles walking or they wanted to. They won the division. I'd like to look into that shrager. What do you think you know. Look into that. I'm thinking the ravens did it a few years ago. That was more than a few years ago but that was probably ten years ago seven years ago where they wildcard team. Yeah remember the game and denver. No but i'll take your word for it. Laco with the big play at the end of the in the big again. I don't remember this this is from. Espn stats and info. Brady has played in as many super bowls in his forties as aaron rodgers. I think beasley is still going to be your pets. Safe security blanket. That josh leans on in the slot. I think that's what his role is. John brown is the receiver that the bills can walk away from if they don't want to pay him or if they want to replace them maybe they think that they've got something special. With gabriel davis. Maybe they want to get younger at that spot. I see john brown being on a different team in twenty twenty one so i think beasley is the piece. That's going to be there for sure. Chelsea Joins Call To Baker Administration To Get COVID Vaccine To High-Risk Communities Right Now

"Just earlier this week. Over four hundred. Medical professionals sent a letter calling on governor baker to prioritize vaccinations for high risk communities of color communities such as chelsea so today. We're going to hear from two voices on the ground. In chelsea it was actually a community specifically cited in the letter joining us now is denin yearly paulino the chief operating officer of laco lativa also known as the chelsea collaborative. That's a group that works to empower lat next immigrants to enhance their community social and economic health. Also joining us as dr wanda gonzalez. A pediatrician at m. g. h. chelsea healthcare center. Who signed the letter. Welcome to both of you know. Thank you happy to be here. Thank you and listeners. Talk with our neighbors in chelsea we want to hear from you about whether the commonwealth is getting its priorities. In the vaccine rollout right. What phase are you in. Do you think the phases are being established correctly. The governor's made some changes to who's in those phases recently. Are those good decisions. Eight hundred four two three eight two five five. That's one eight hundred four to three talk. So dr gonzales. I will start with you. Why did you decide to sign onto this letter. Well and. I it seems like a no brainer to me to be honest. I Oh quote my husband while we were talking about this. You know I you know. I was happy when i first heard about a huge Distribution center in gillette stadium But just the you know the look it it makes sense to. I think they were talking about incorrect me wrong about five thousand vaccines day. That's the goal. The goal is to go indeed But my concern was its location. You know for You know someone like me and my family the same family. Since i'm a healthcare worker. I get it differently but you know to go to foxborough to receive it. It's it's sort of one of those You know what a drag to have dry there but for my patients and chelsea most a physician for some people in the surrounding communities that is quite a barrier. You know many of them don't have cars Or and they also don't often don't work jobs. They have the flexibility to take off. You know and gortat foxborough to get their vaccine and when i was speaking about this with my husband we you know he said well sort of i'm giving credit him. He said well. We know when there a fire you. Don't you know the fire truck. The fire department comes to fire. You don't take fire. The fire department is one of the things that you're concerned about. Dr gonzales is is even if there is a vaccine available. It's not very practical if you can't get to it. Is that what you're saying. Exactly

5 Ways to Learn from Your Competitors and Shortcut Your Marketing Success

"Welcome to another episode of Marketing School. I'm Eric Su and I'm Neil Patel and today we're GonNa talk about five ways to learn from your competitors and shortcut your marketing success so I'll go with number one. I I talked about this. I believe maybe less two episodes but I do want to bring it up because it's fresh and actually got to play with the tool for the first time today. And so. The tour Spark Torah that's S. P. A. R. K. T. O. R. O. And the reason I sparked Toro is if you think about Chet Holmes Dream one hundred concept which is basically. If I want to promote my book. I'm GonNa go find top one hundred podcast in gaming for example. Okay that's my dream. One hundred for the PODCAST THAT. I'M GONNA find a dream. One hundred four youtube right so this dream one hundred concept was kind of coined by him and then Russell Brunson from click funnels kind of made a dream one hundred four different categories. Now what's beautiful? About Spark Toro is instead of you having to manually find all the influencers all the partners that you might attention WanNa work with you can just use spark twirl and you get five free searches a month and you can just find some key words by the way you can find a bunch of people and from there. You can basically decide okay. I'm going to try to work with these people reach out to these people and you're going to leverage the audience that they already have to help you get to where you WANNA go. That's number one. The second thing that I would do is go look at your competitors and see which one is running a continuing modifying. Their design built with is a website. That tells you if someone's using AB testing software alike optimize VW or hot jar. Crazy or anything like that and what you want to end up doing is seeing what changes are making because almost continue making changes and they're using these softwares that means tracking to make sure that the changes they're making in their design and copy is boosting sales revenue conversions. So I like doing is using way back. Machine Way. Back machine shows me the variations of their pages that they've been using and how their design and copy has evolved over time. And then what I like doing is learning from that. Because if they're using the conversion software you know that the changes that are making tend to be increasing conversions so learned from that and I should give you on what direction you should be going with your business to start getting more sales more conversions faster versus having to do all the learnings that they already did the third one. This seems like a dust. Amen but facebook Ad Library has been great. I mean to be able to see when your competitors are putting up new ads and how long they been running those ads for what type of ad copy they're using chances are if they've been running ads for a very long time there either a stupid or be. They has been working really well right. It's it's was the time it's one or the other and they're probably not number one if they've concept been spending a ton of money and so facebook our library. I like to use it. Not only look a competitor's withdrawn stations that I could potentially swipe because when you're writing copy or when you're writing at any type of advertising you ultimately looking for copy you're looking for some type of structure that you can pull from and then ultimately make it your own number four look one thing that all your competition's doing online and I don't understand. Why people do this people go on. Podcast interviews and talk about their business the revenue. What's causing it to grow failures. They had and they're spilling all their beans like one podcast that I listen to a lot on the enough is leveling up another one Nathan Laco and when you look at these podcast you know? I'm not mentioning Eric's leveling up because he's my Kohl's marketing school. It honestly is good and a lot of my competitors have been on his podcast or people in similar industries. They talk about what's working for them. What's failed and their strategies? And they're spilling their beans and a lot of them do brag. And what's cool about for me as a marketer is I'm able to learn from it and avoid their pitfalls and failures so that way I can grow faster so make sure you search for your competitors and add the word revenue at the end or podcasts at the end. And you'll find that the reveal a lot of articles or podcast episodes breaking down how they're doing on what you can learn from them to grow faster. Yeah Nathan. Lack has podcast Larry's because he forces the revenue out of them and if they don't give the revenue he basically like extrapolates to math which is pretty simple. I usually they're like. Oh yeah you know. It's roughly that anyway. I digress so number five. Last Finale Hillary to my last recommendation so last one was phased out library. But most people don't know that you can use software such as at beat and you can look at what type of ads people running on Google for example Google display network. You can look at how they're spend his trending over time. What their top. Ads are and again as a advertiser as a copywriter. Your job is to have a swipe file like a library of ad copy or adds that you like and then from there you just restructure to whatever you're trying to do because if the ad worked on you then you should be thinking about okay. Why did that work me and how it might potentially work if you basically restructured a little bit and tailored it towards your audience right

Created during Spanish flu, jingle dress dance now helping First Nations people cope with COVID-19

"The cove in nineteen pandemic women and girls across north. America have been posting videos of themselves performing the jingle dress. Dance it's a dance. It has historical ties to another pandemic from one hundred years ago way. People in the United States and Canada tell a similar story about the origins of the jingle dance tradition. They cite a young girl being very sick her father after having a vision about a special dress and dance associated with it gate. The little girl that dress. She began dancing in the new jingle dress and survived that was University of Minnesota professor. Brenda Child on the origin story of the Jingle Dress. Dance Brenda is a member of the Red Lake. Agip way reservation in Minnesota and she's been doing some research into the history of the jingle dress. She joins me from Minneapolis to tell us what she discovered. Welcome Brenda thank you so much. What did you find? Was the origin of the Jingle dress. Dance or I was really surprised when I started doing the research. I couldn't find a single photograph of what you would call. Jingle dress before Circa nineteen twenty in the United States or Canada. And I thought. Wow you know as a historian. It occurred to me that something very big had happened. That created this new healing tradition a century ago so when I started doing further work into it. It seems that it was the big flu. Epidemic of Nineteen nineteen very similar in some ways to the global pandemic were experiencing today. And so the story whether it's told in Whitefish Bay Ontario or central Minnesota on them lacks reservation. Both of them name a little girl as being the first jingle dress dancer and the girl was actually survivor of the global pandemic of a century ago And there was something else going on at the time as well as this Influenza pandemic there was there is this law. I guess outlawing I indigenous a spiritual holiday so that really added to to the power of the dress right. Yeah it was. I like to say that the jingle dress dance was a radical tradition from its origins because in the context of the United States the Indian office in Washington had outlawed ritualistic dancing on reservations in this kind of infamous dance order of one thousand nine hundred twenty one but it is true that the jingle dress dance emerged during a moment when these kinds of traditions were being suppressed on reservation communities and so in that sense the jingle dress dance was sort a radical tradition from its beginning very cool. Is there a history of new? Data's being created out of Specific need or issue that needs to be addressed in our communities. Well I mean I think we have a tradition of new dances being created. But this is the first dance. I traced to a kind of global epidemic. And what's interesting to me? Is Most of US know that Indian tribes in North America? Ever since the coming of Europeans experienced many different kinds of epidemics and pandemics and smallpox and what the jingle dress dance sort of shows me is maybe this was a way that native people had of coping with these earlier generations of epidemic says. Well how is the jingle dress itself connected to healing? I think most native people know that the jingles themselves argued with kind of healing power. Ojibway people think of spiritual power as being passed through the air and so sound is very important in that world view. And so if you've ever been to a powwow and you've had the wonderful experience of listening to many Jingle dress dancers dancing together you know. It's a really interesting sound in that it's a tinkling sound. But some people have described it as almost being like a summer rain or or voting sounds of a rainfall what we learned this past year. My students and I at the University of Minnesota were putting together an exhibit for the Malek's Indian Museum thinking about it being the hundredth anniversary of the Jingle Dress. Dance tradition and we had an opportunity to look at dresses through the decades and so from the Twenties Thirties forties fifties and more recent years. And what we found. Is that the jingles over the years. Where made of different materials we often think of. The Classic Copenhagen Snuff Can Lid and that has been a consistent material that our people have used to make jingles but we also saw dresses with Prince Albert tobacco cans. We also saw dresses made from baking soda cans early. So yeah so people. American Indian women and women in particular have been very creative. We had one early Dakota dress. That had a jacket. Both of them with jingles and the skirt and jacket were made of drapery fabric. Wow it sounds like a jingle dressed dancers were kind of contemporary in that they were able to go with the styles of the time they did and in fact some of my favorite dresses are the first ones from the collections at the Minnesota Historical Society. They're often black kind of Slim dresses that resemble the flapper dresses of the Nineteen Seventies. And so it's surprising. And that's sort of one of the things. We wanted to show with the exhibit that in many ways. The Jingle dress dance evolved through the decades. There isn't one consistent style but the jingles are what they all have in common a lot of the dresses from the thirties and forties. We found had long zinc zippers. Up The side showing that they were probably purchased in department stores. When you and then we're embellished later with jingles and that's something that may be would surprise some of us who always say you know you have to make your own jingle dress or you have to have it made for you. Because in the nineteen thirties and forties women sometimes purchase them and added the jingles. Later I imagine many people think that Powell dancing has been around for hundreds of years. But as you say the jingle dress dance and the dress itself is relatively new. How do people respond when when you tell them that? I like to talk about that idea very much. Because many people can only see indigenous people as historic people. I know we have that problem in the United States where sort of viewed as always in terms of the past and so with the Jingle dress even though the Powell tradition is older than the jingle dress dance shows me. Is that native people and Ojibway people here in the Great Lakes were part of the making of the modern world. And who would've thought one hundred years ago a century ago that this global epidemic that people experienced all over the world would go into the remote communities of the Great Lakes and be very devastating and that women would respond to that epidemic. By you know I always say it's like applying. Sav to wounds that they were able to kind of create this new tradition. That is still with us. A century later. Wow now you mentioned earlier that you helped curate and exhibit at the Mill Lack indie museum in Ohio which took a look at the history of the Jingle Dress and was organized for the one hundredth anniversary of this dance. What kinds of dresses did you have contributed to this exhibit from some some of the you know the the dancers out there well. It was really fun because we started the exhibit with the idea that we were going to bring historic dresses so that the community could kind of look at what I mentioned earlier. The how the dresses evolved over the decades but then what we also found is there almost became like a second exhibit because women wanted to bring their own shingle dress into the exhibit as well and. I think the one that is photographed. Most often is one where it belongs to Vanessa. Northrop from the fond laco devoid community in Minnesota and she turned her police uniform into a jingle dress. And that's a very powerful dress When people see it another favorite is the one I mentioned made out the Baking Soda. Can lintz and that was from our spiritual leader from Kind of central Minnesota and Wisconsin. His name is Lee Staples and he asked if we would like to have his mother's dress which he's still had Lee himself is in his seventies so he brought in his mother's very beautiful dress and we that to the exhibit as well. Just a beautiful sight to see yeah. The exhibit is called the BOSCA. Uganda good day. The Jingle dress at one hundred and as I said it will be having another season. Hopefully when the museum reopened again later this spring it. It will be there for the summer months as well. Now you may have noticed over the last couple of weeks. We've seen women and girls posting videos of themselves dancing Jingle online in response to cove nineteen how does it make you feel to see indigenous people turning back to the Jingle dress dance as a dentist healing? Well it makes me feel great. It makes me very happy to think that another generation as being inspired by this tradition. You may have noticed early last summer that Google had doodle in the middle of June about the jingle dress dance and it was the first time that Google had commissioned a native artist to make a doodle and I thought that was a very interesting thing to happen in the last year too. So what's interesting to me to the timing of these particular events because who would have thought a century after the jingle dress we'd have another global pandemic and just at the time we were remembering that history so strongly that we would have a similar kind of episode in the midst of our country and any in our communities so the timing of. This is all very interesting to
