"Statements made during media interviews could be interpreted as Ronin. Dan Lacking remorse our villon. Ron cited and his appellate. Well it brief was based on a California case and in the State of Utah. Lack of remorse evidence is permitted. One of Ron's most atrocious claims. Yes yes it does get. Worse was at the trial court made an irreversible error when they didn't allow a jury instruction that the jury can consider sympathy Pity and mercy. When considering the mitigating factors for recommending the death penalty there is no statue in Utah? That says a defendant is allowed to to make a general appeal to a jury sympathy. He also tried to challenge the constitutionality of the death penalty but because it is enforced in Utah. The sentence was was upheld in another effort to refuse responsibility. Ron Claim that his sentence was disproportionate to his brother. Dan's particularly since Dan testified testified at his trial that he committed both murderers but was not sentenced to death but remember. There were witnesses chip in Ricky. And they both heard Ron say in the car that he murdered Brenda. And they both testified to such so. This claim was also without merit in the most laughable claim of all ron tried to claim that the court made an irreversible air by allowing the second trial because it violated the double jeopardy clause. The court didn't likely have to explain. Explain very much about why this claim had zero merit but for anyone that doesn't know the double jeopardy clause means a person cannot be charged for a crime twice if the first I trial resorts in acquittal. Double Jeopardy doesn't apply in an instance where conviction is overturned on appeal and conclusion. None of the claims claims raised by Ron. During his appeal of his second trial was a reversible error and the conviction and sentencing were upheld. Ron Lafferty chose chose to be executed by firing squad. The last time anyone was executed by firing squad in Utah was Ronnie Lee Gardner in two thousand ten. Who murdered an attorney? Ernie when he was trying to escape a courthouse Utah has since changed. Its laws regarding death penalty executions and now the firing squad is only used as a last resort. If for some reason the lethal injection drugs were unavailable. Ronald Lafferty was a mere months away from his execution date. But in a twist of fate eight he passed away of natural causes at a Utah State Prison on November eleventh. Two Thousand Nineteen. He was seventy eight years old. His death has hopefully brought some peace for the family and friends of the deer victims. Brenda and Erica. Lafferty as former American fork police department chief Terry Fox was quoted as saying. I'll never forget this. I've seen a lot of death in my career. This one was different in the case that it was religiously motivated invaded. You can use the word brutal horrific and I just don't throw those out lately because this was a really really brutal murder in was different different from a lot of crime scenes and a lot of ways. "My name is Jenny Thompson, and I am the founder and CEO of a company called safety pin technologies as the found of safety pin technologies. I think listeners unfamiliar with safety pin, and just hearing about you guys. For the first time, can you set the scene, and tell them more about the kind of problems that you so feel customers? But also, of course, what makes it unique from the solutions outlet. Absolutely. The company has developed a digital trust badge that lets people see at a glance who they can trust when they're using sharing and gig economy sites. And if you think about how often people are using a swipe or click to book a babysitter book, a dog Walker hire someone to take care of their elderly parents. We use it for almost everything. Now we know very little about that person. And we do know that a lot of the platforms, do their own background checks, but we. What's included in that necessarily or what their standards are? And so we've developed this peer to peer forward-facing trust badge that not only incorporates, a comprehensive criminal background check. But we've also developed a proprietary behavioral review, that we created with criminal profiler 's and clinical infringe psychologists. So even if somebody has a clean record, we can mitigate for people who have the type of behavior that may lead to them putting somebody at risk. I launched a new universe, which response Lisette colts safety pin will completely put you a moderate solution was straightaway approved by the full Mowatt, how secure chief and forensic, bro. Phone is like he told me about that. Sounds incredible story. Yeah. I was very fortunate. I reached out to my network, and I was looking for some people who had significant success in the law enforcement field. I don't come from law enforcement. I come as a as a corporate CEO. In the natural healthcare space. And so, I knew that I really needed people with DNA in that space, and I met a woman who introduced me to John Gill, who's the former chief security officer at the White House, and he also was in the secret service for twenty five years. And when I sat down and told them what we were doing and how we were combining the behavioral with the criminal history and mitigating. For the fact that so many crimes, go unreported and to be honest that a lot of people with criminal tendencies use these apps. In order to find people that they can scam. He he was onboard right away. You loved what we were doing. He wants to be part of it. He's been really supportive. He actually then connected me to Dr Nancy czars, who's the former lead forensic psychologist at Leavenworth maximum security, prison, and has studied the intersection of psychology and criminality her whole career, and she's one of the key people that helped us build out the actual questions that we use in the waiting and scoring method. -nology in order to eliminate people that caused concern on a few moments ago you did bunching up behavioral review, and I'm assuming that's incredibly curious. So you tell me more about how you say staife depend transforming filming the security level of the shown economy on also expanded a little bit more on that unique behavioral review, then having to do that. I won't give you any sample questions because we do try to keep them close to the chest. Reveal me is a song. Well, we're very careful to point out that we don't diagnose, and also, if you do, take the test, and don't meet our requirements. We don't have a negative indicator, so that's between us and you on our database in you. Really? And it's not information that we share with anybody. But the way that we see it is in the United States, forty percent of crimes going reported. And really one of the most shocking statistics is thirty percent of crimes where there's a weapon used or an injury. Still go unreported. And so the fact that somebody comes back with a clean criminal background. Check doesn't mean that they wouldn't put someone in danger and again, we're making very quick decisions on these apps. We're looking at somebody's profile. We're looking at ratings, which may be reliable, but also can be gamed or or can be overly a few sieve and also frequently have nothing to do with safety. So what we want to do is give people the option of adding a safety pin to their profile on whatever. Apper website. They're using to book jobs so that people can see at a glance, I've taken this extra step to get myself screened, so that, you know, I'm somebody you can trust. And with the behavioral review, does, is it looks for people who have the, the behavior characteristics of somebody who's on the scale of antisocial personality disorder or psychopathy and those sound much graver than they really are. There are eight to twelve percent of the US population falls under that umbrella and they are people who lack remorse, lack empathy are willing to victimize other people for their own benefit. And so we've developed the questionnaire with very specific goals in mind of not awarding a safety pin to people who present these characteristics or possibly present these characteristics. Huchon gin. To stop people from gaming the system and talking about, you, mentioned ways, lot, remorse and empathy. There's no way that people can game that system. And tell you what you want to hear a challenge to overcome any I'd be naive. If I said, there's no way, but I would say that we've really carefully balanced it with a combination of extremely carefully worded questions. I will share the story that we had somebody who was actually in the mail. Order bride importing business, who wanted to use our product and we chose not to work with them. And he's said, well, I'm just going to Google translate your questions, and I said you can do that. It's not gonna help. There's such nuance in the individual word choice between Ken and would and will and might and the way that it's weighted and scored so people may try to figure out what we're doing. We have some anti gaming technology deals in where if you answer this question one way you can't answer this question the same way because it would be a logical. We have control. Built in and we update the questions regularly, it's also impossible for somebody to change their answers. I'm curious what's the story behind safety pin and actually put you on this journey? I took a vacation after I, I left my last job. I mentioned I had been a CEO in the natural medicine field. And I left that job and was trying to figure out what I was going to do next. And when I returned from vacation, I found out that my dog sitter had not stayed with my dogs as she was supposed to. And when I let her go and told her that she had to pay me back the money that I had prepaid her for my next trip, she faked her own death instead of pay me back one hundred fifty dollars. Extra. Apparently she doesn't know about the block this caller feature on her phone. Yeah. And so, so I realized through the way everything had unfolded that she exhibited a lot of these traits. And I tried to figure out what could I have done differently to avoid the situation and as I got to speak with these experts and speak with John and doctors ours? And learn more about what tools there are two. I hate to use the word predict 'cause it's a little bit too strong here. I, I don't want to again diagnose anybody, but to potentially identify someone that would do these kinds of things, and it would have this pathological behavior. They're, they're actually pretty accessible tools for us. And so we were able to build the algorithm with that included. It's the founder of psych depend technologies which if we zoom out a woman owned startup in Baltimore of curious, what kind of challenges you encountered, as a woman in tech is building a stall took outside of Silicon Valley. Early after been any challenges, you've got to overcome that. And they've been any challenges how much time do we have for this interview? And I, I'll say, I think that women in tech is is true, and it's a misnomer because I'm not a developer. I'm not an engineer. So the company is attacked company, but I'm not someone who knows how to write code or how to build software, and I have an amazing CTO that does that for me. I think if you look at this, it's very clear that women get a lot less funding. We are asked questions. How are we going to avoid disaster? Instead of how are we going to create wins? And I'm someone who spent most of my career working with people who have what I refer to as kind of a gentle sexism, and so I'm very used to it, and it always been able to allow for it and, and to mitigate against it, and it's been very different. And I'm not one to to cry. Sexism, very lightly. And I, I think it's more those unconscious biases that absolutely result in people. And interestingly in men and women treating women differently. I, I think when you look at the statistics women unless they have funds that are expressly investing in women. They are not actually doing that much better of a job than the males are. And then being in Baltimore I spent a lot of time in New York because the networking opportunities and getting to meet investors assume greater but being in Baltimore to very small ecosystem, it, obviously, has a reputation through the TV show the wire and the actual news. And so some people love that because they love the idea of, of helping a city rebuild itself, and some people don't feel comfortable knowing the market, it very much limits your abilities to, to get partners into get funding. When people tend to be. More focused on silicone valley, or silicone, alley bushland country spices that you mentioned, are you saying them improving or are they still the I think they are still there in very real way. And I actually had I was talking to investor and he said, I'm just, I'm just gathering some information for research. How old are you in? Do you have children? And I thought they would never ask a male founder that question. It certainly not the second part. But I don't think the first part, either at the same time I am very cautious not to ascribe everything to sexism, or to be on the east coast. I think I have this fantasy that if I were a guy on the west coast, my, my startup would be fully funded, and we would be off to the races at, at extreme levels, and I and I don't know that that's true. But I think that there is absolutely. A, a small town bias. And if E mail bias both of which. I think are somewhat unconscious, but still very, very present. People listening, you're curious about safety pin technologies and everything that you've created he can you just maybe walk them through how to apply for a pain how it works. And how to get verified. Absolutely said. The website is get a safety pin dot com and you go there and click apply..

All right, yours. Yes address, thought it would be really neat. This time not only to stay in California, but to do something, a person with my birth name Stanley, Stanley Dean Baker. Here we go. Ready are. At three o'clock on the afternoon of Saturday, July eleventh, nineteen seventy a man out fishing on the banks of the Yellowstone river in Montana snagged a human body at the end of his line. He drove in shock to the nearest ranch to telephone the police and deputy Bigalow, who was stationed not for real. That was his name. Deuce Bigalow mill okay. Gigolo stationed at the entrance to Yellowstone National Park responded to the call. With the aid of some local men. The deputy waded into the turbulent river and dragged the body to shore, although a custom to routine drowning cases, Bigalow, new immediately, this was murder Moog. The head was missing of new. Maybe it was on circumstance. That I don't know. Bigalow called sheriff, Don guate- ni who drove corner Davis to the scene. All three men crouched over the body, which was clad. Only in shorts. It was that of a male apart from the missing head. The arms had also been severed at the shoulders and the legs were chopped off at the knees. The abdomen. Chest were covered with stab wounds with a particularly large ugly hole in the chest. Okay. The corner looked shocked when he could colluded his examination quote. Never saw anything like it. He said, grimly the pool fellow's been stabbed about twenty times. And I figure he's been in the water day. He was a young fellow probably in his early twenties. There's one other thing the hardest missing I said, heart not bought. The chest has been cut open the arts, removed unquote. For the sheriff. It was a major headache. All normal means of identifying the body, the head and hands had been deliberately removed. But why the gratuituous butchery of the rest of the body? What could off the legs while remove the heart good question? The only thing that's a jested was that it was some sort form of a Colt murder. There had been a rash of them recently, all connected with secret groups of devil, worshippers. Don't the share and Tate case had grabbed the headlines, but similar bizarre killings were going on all over the USA or so they thought they were kinda wrong lot of it. But whatever the torso was taken by ambulance to the morgue in Livingston for proper all tops to be carried out while police teletype details of the victim to Wyoming and other neighboring states it was impossible to tail where the body had been dumped in the river and the Yellowstone pass through why owning before entering Montana and the national park. Although police searched the river and its banks for many miles. No traces of the missing limbs were found the results of the all topsy indicated that the victim. Had been stabbed twenty seven times with ashore, pointed blade of at least five inches in length. The removal of the head and limbs had been crudely performed possibly with the knife used to inflict the stab wounds. The victim was in his early twenties and have been dead for twenty four hours. When pound police had to wait until someone was reported missing on the Monday morning. Teletype message came chattering into the sheriff's office in Livingston concerning a missing person who resembled the description of the torso James, Michael Schlosser age, twenty two had been reported missing from the town of round up one hundred miles away that same morning. He had set out on the Friday to drive Yellowstone park in his OPEL, cadet, sports car, but had not turned up for work on the Monday when his office colleagues got into it with his landlady. Side of the Derm road, the truck suffered only a dinner bumper because it was a metal but car was a write off. It was total the driver of the truck was a businessman from Detroit on holiday. He got out of his truck and approached the car from which to large young men. Were emerging. Both men were typical California hippies with long hair and beards. One was blind. "Here. Try try to ignore it falls. Trying to do is just talk to me. Tell me these things keep going. And although you're wanting to present your your viewpoint. You also want to counterbalance it by giving perhaps some of the cons as well to make it appear that your objective and neutral, you so you wanna make yourself seem a little bit flawed. Exactly flawed vulnerable human just like you. I get it. I kinda get it. I think I'm gonna need a little more help understanding this. And certainly you want to instill a sense of fear as well. A sense of urgency. That rice is time limited decision making process. You don't want to give people the luxury of time because time will only plant doubt in the recipients mind and give them an opportunity to check it out. Check it out do their due diligence. But there are these long cons, and I've read a meeting things about it like the Email scans from scams from Nigeria they play those those get played out over a period of months and people just keep buying in deeper and deeper. Yes. I had the one one time where I got an Email from supposedly from a friend who said that he was at Heathrow. Oh, I've got no. And we've done start like, I'm having trouble cry not crying writing this. That can't remember any boy put it, what's, you know. It was like the dad of a fellow parent from our gymnast IX. And he said like, oh, you know, we're in Heathrow, and we're stuck. And and I can't you know, it's something you didn't have money for some reason, I send it to like called my comes office to ask. And they're like, that's a thing. But what I couldn't figure out what this has to have at least one hundred friends that are closer than me. Why is he calling me? Well, I think he called, you know, Email it was it was Email. I think I can explain what was I just sent him a small amount of money. Good for you. Yeah. An in monthly installments to make sure he was being responsible. And I said to him I said there's going to be interest on this. Right. Because I didn't trust him. We didn't. I choose this topic wisely for being during our fundraising drive. Yeah. That's a good point right there. Yeah. So you you tend to or members? They would give it to get pin. You got the extra special into special episode? The nobody else can listen to keep ten and it keeps. No. We didn't get that. Last one somebody casts check. But it wasn't a Senate again. No kidding kidding. Fundraising drive is real now. Are we also -ceptable being conned can anybody Kanders and people smart enough to not know most people are susceptible to being conned. You win, you know, not to my knowledge. No. There's still time if yours. Yeah. And you know, most of us will experience a point in our lives where we're vulnerable and the con artist, especially if they're psychopathic is going to new. What to say to appeal to what it is? That is missing in your what is that? You're needing in your life. Is that a psychopath or a sociopath? What's the difference? Interesting question. So we used to call it so Siafa theory, right? And now for two as psychopathy, so there's no. Tweeting there one. What does it mean? A psychopath is an individual who is known to lack remorse. They might be a pathological liar. They are ego Centric and Dr cystic. Really how many people came to their inauguration? Okay. So, yeah, they're likely narcissistic, they are pathological liars. Which means they really can't tell the truth. Or would rather not? Yeah. They they certainly know the difference between truth and fiction. However, they get a thrill out of lying on. They will lie about just the silliest and stupidest thing leading what they had for lunch that day. Right. We're sometimes as the recipient. You can't even fig figure out what the upside of that lie was it's simulating. Is it not it is it is. Absolutely. And when you catch them in the lie most of us when we're cutting ally. There's a sense of shame or embarrassment not for the psychopathic individual this individual's able to rework their story to make it sound almost plausible. Wow. Again, not something. I'm familiar with the top culture, a government right now have press secretaries that have the same trait. Well as mental health professionals. You know, we are we we've been asked not to comment due to ethical reasons. Why people that you're going to actually examine? I see what you're saying. So she says that you and your listeners come to your own conclusions based on your description of what a psychopath is. What a sec and this. I mean, anybody in particular, but would a psychopath be attractive to another psychopath. Can they shot each other interesting? Well, I don't see what a psychopath would want in a fellow psycho path because how could how could they potentially manipulate their individual. They wanted individual in which there's a power differential. Yeah. And that way, they're also because the ego Centric aspect, I suppose, right, but somebody canary. Konare yardage in with subservient to them really really interesting. So what what do we need to know to protect ourselves? I mean, not giving up personal information so good giving up personal information. Do your due diligence. If something sounds too good to be true. It most likely is whatever good deal is available today will likely be there tomorrow likely be there next week again, they're trying to create that sense of urgency. I wanna point out that our fundraising drive last just two weeks.
