Trump abandoned the citizenship census question, yet thousands still have to answer it

"The president announced on Thursday that he is dropping further attempts to include the citizenship question on the twenty twenty census instead he signed executive order that's gonna require the commerce department to separately gather data from other departments within the government and then putting that together with the census information they'll get a complete picture of who all the citizens and non citizens are in the country we spoke to Nicole the ray immigration reporter at law three sixty for more on this the press conference that he gave was kind of weird it started off with his rhetorical question are you a citizen Gee I can answer that question are you a citizen of the United States of America Gee I'm sorry I just can't answer that question he essentially conceded that continuing to pursue the ship question in court but it also leaves preventing the center from being printed on time but at the same time he answered the negative order saying that states may actually be able to use their citizenship data that the department of commerce will ask me to draw electric affect based on eligible voters so that in some ways could be a concerning point that the X. value at least has highlighted is something that could be challenged in court at a later time but as of now it appears that comp is totally backing down on including the citizenship question on the census and definitely not a win for him he specifically said that I'm not backing down in my effort to get all of this information on who are citizens and non citizens this method that he's gonna go through with this executive order is basically what the census bureau said they should do instead you know go through all the other departments and you can get this information this way I guess the executive order is just making it clear that these other departments have to provide this information to the commerce department they can't provide this data to the commerce department but they also won't be actually allowed to use any kind of thank you that you may not get a more accurate this is just basically calling the resources that already exist within the government and it's creating a whole lot of new resources let's talk about bill Barr the Attorney General because the president brought him out to explain the back down it is the way I saw it obviously the Supreme Court said you can't put this question on the census you need to go back to the drawing board and give us different reasons for why you want to do this you can explain yourself well enough the first time so bill Barr comes out to basically explain that away saying the Supreme Court shot is down we can do it this way and he congratulated the president twice to say congratulations Mister president you're gonna get these numbers anyways I and it was just a weird picture that was going on actually catch this decision as a practical one he said that if the White House went back to the drawing board and fully explains the rationale behind the citizenship question in your credible court where this case now is they would definitely win but with such an abbreviated timeline for printing the census it ultimately he said just came down to a decision practicality rather than it being a matter of not being able to win the legal argument it did seem that way because the Supreme Court did say that they do have the right to ask the question is just you're not doing it the right way just yet go back to the drawing board and that that that was it the time line was just not working in their favor they needed to start printing the census pamphlets since July first I believe it was so go back to the drawing board it was just delay everything and you know that would just cause even more problems this is all going on against this backdrop we've been told that there's going to be a number of raids on undocumented migrant families by ice over the weekend I think they're starting Sunday and they're gonna be talking at least two thousand immigrants have been ordered to be deported and this gonna happen in at least ten major cities it's all in bucket it's a great immigration policy is better thank you they're in a great first in responding to your question on the campus that would improve their political power and now trust them service into hiding with each additional rates on but you know what the ACLU is now challenging you grades preemptively in New York federal court they just found a few today thank that the government have to get at least twenty families may be affected by that an opportunity to present their case in court and have a chance to make their teeth forty four Michael Moran immigration reporter a lot three sixty thank you very much for joining us thank one of the big stories of the week happened over the weekend and into Monday where federal prosecutors released an indictment against billionaire financier Jeffrey apps the in charge him with sex trafficking and creating a vast network of under age victims for him to sexually exploit the indictment alleges that he would pay girls for massages that would then become sex acts and then pay the girls more money to recruit other girls the store has a lot of details and even some connections to the current labor secretary Alexander Acosta for more on this we spoke to Kate breakaway she's a senior reporter the daily beast she was in court for actually is arraignment and tells us more details new about this is that he's being prosecuted in New York but the allegations are hauntingly similar to those that he faced in Florida about a decade ago and so the idea is that Jeffrey obscene uses employees as associates to recruit under age girls to come to his mansion and give him the sauces but once they arrive to his mansion in Palm Beach these are suppose it massage sessions actually turned into sexual abuse and molestation he paid the girls hundreds of dollars each visit and then he paid his victims to recruit even more underage girls so it is in a sort of the sex trafficking pyramid scheme that he was accused of running in Florida and now with thirty the New York are accusing him of doing the same thing but it is a pre side mansion in Manhattan but the motives and the and the methods are all very much the same in both cases the thing that's crazy about this story is obviously okay so he's connected to a lot of really famous important people Bill Clinton president Donald Trump even famous lawyers Alan Dershowitz is kind of wrapped up in all this stuff with him as well but tell us what happened because when this was going down in Florida he got some sort of sweet heart plea deal that let him just plead guilty to two counts of prostitution and everything basically went away he got a year in jail but even that he was getting out six days a week I think on work release this is back in two thousand seven he's a powerful financiers you said he has a little black book filled with famous people including you know these so seats of the Clinton assistance of the Clintons he had Malani and Donald Trump and his little black book I mean he knew everybody and so it's no surprise that he had a high powered legal team that stepped in to make sure that these charges didn't result in serious charges for hammer serious prison time essentially he had enough money to make this all go away so back in two thousand seven the US attorney's office in Miami which was then led by Alexander Costas who is now trump's labor secretary and his office had actually prepared a fifty three page indictment against that steam esteemed high powered lawyers which included their show it included Ken Starr intervenes behind the backs of the victims in this case so we have a situation where it is very powerful man with his all star legal team is collaborating with the US attorney's office with prosecutors to downgrade these charges on the other side you have victims that come you know they're vulnerable they come from under privileged family situations and esteemed attorneys made it out so they weren't credible at all I mean they created das Sears on the victim they provided the victim's social media pages that perhaps indicated drug user just had unseemly photos or things like that and so you know they not only attacks the victims in the case and there were allegations that I've seen sent people to follow the victims and to follow the victims families that Alexander costs that his bed in the past in a letter that he's written that prosecutors were under attack that they were looking for different peccadillos of prosecutors that could be exposed so it seems from the outside that prosecutors just wanted to get this deal done the US attorney's office now says well many of the victims in the case received a settlement from I've seen they didn't have to pay for their attorneys and you know I guess the US attorney's office thought it was okay that Mister Eckstine pleaded guilty to two state charges and ended up serving a year in jail and as you said that jail time was pretty laughable I mean he's in the private wing of the county jail and most of that time was spent on work release so it really is a miscarriage of justice that deal also shielded any co conspirators who may have helped arrange the girls coming to his places a lot of people are kind of sweat it right now because of these new charges who knows if they could be connected to all this all

S. census with the latest on this story and whether the White House as an alternative plan I'm joined by A. B. C. Serena Marshall in Washington hello Sir hi Tom so what was the opposition to the question in the first place and who was opposing it well the opposition stems from the fact that the sentence is it mandated by the constitution to count every individual in the United States at every ten years now at the White House said this has been done historically that's actually not factually incorrect they've never in the history in a state at every single citizen but their citizenship wide there every single it'll individual who's been given insensitive treatment what their citizenship what now opponents are saying it by adding this question here would actually get an inaccurate reading of the number of people living in the United States because it's going to scare people from answering at and getting an accurate reading will impact how not just commercial district are assigned but also how federal funding is sold out this went to the court and the court ruled at the Supreme Court ruled that the administration's reasoning for needing to add this question was contrived they said they needed to enforce the voting rights act so they were shot down the president now saying they're not backing away from the spider just going about it a different way but how much really interesting about this is though and the executive order the president announced yesterday it's something that they could have done back in two thousand eighteen it was actually how the census bureau recommended the administration get the information that they want not to buy and then the question of the citizenship not by adding the question of citizenship to the center but instead using administrative record is actually something that some agencies have already been working with the senator on doing including in the department of homeland security which had started working with them more than a month ago on this problem C. "Let's just make this go away. I WANNA play this clip. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is one of several lawmakers pressuring Labor Secretary Alexander Acosta to step down to leave his post because of his handling of the Epstein case. I am calling on Secretary Acosta to resign. It is now impossible for anyone to have confidence in secretary Costa's ability to lead the Department of Labor L. E. Hoenig Epstein will not get off so easy this time what could be his sentence if convicted he's he's looking at a at least a decade behind bars. I think conservatively if you if you sort of run through the federal sentencing calculation which I won't do but he's got an interesting position to make Epstein. He's really got three choices one. He can go to trial but the vast majority of federal defendants get convicted at trial looking looking at the indictment that came out it looks to me like a fairly strong indictment I and if he goes to trial and gets convicted he won't get out from jail. Probably in his remaining lifetime number two is he can try to plead guilty without cooperating but if I'm back in in my old seat in the southern urban district I'm not willing to give this guy any kind of break. I'm not even thinking about anything below. The double digits at least on a plea deal and thirty can try to cooperate now. That's where things get interesting if he tried to cooperate because if you cooperate as the federal defendant in the Southern District of New York you have to give up everything you know about yourself and everybody else name names now as he willing to do that if he does. That's his best chance by far of getting a lower sentence but be is the seventh district interested in cooperating. I've cooperated some really bad guys cooperated murderers I've done trials based on cooperators were murders but but boy a serial child Molester and child sex trafficker is a different story. I I'd have second and third and fourth thoughts about cooperating him. If I was there let me get a compelled college. Oh yes Julie please. I just want to interject on that on an important point. The unit that is handling this case is the public corruption unit on this which is really raised a lot of eyebrows on here and what what could could be happening and I certainly am not on the inside but but knowing the case and how it worked out in the way that Epstein was pressuring these prosecutors in fact he hired one of them to work for him and my understanding is that he hired ah he dangled a lot of things before these prosecutors so and that combined with the fact that you know that that other woman came out this morning on the today show more victims are going to be coming forward. There's going to be an awful whole lot of pressure to figure out that whether any of these prosecutors had any kind of quid pro quo involved in going along with disagreement. I'm not saying that there was but there was some very there was a number of complaints filed against these prosecutors during the course of this case. I WANNA get a listener in here. Noreen from Newton Massachusetts Hi Noreen if you could be brief welcome to the program. Oh thank you hi. I just wanted to say that I see a parallel here between these child victims and professor Blah's before it and how her case was dismissed and how the senators did really not know the brain science and what happens when children are abused especially and why they don't report because this is the kind of treatment treatment they get. They're not really protected or can't be assured of protection and the Criminal Justice System Noreen. Thank you very much <hes> Julie Brown..
