"We're going to be taking you through some of our favorite moments from Monte Carlo. On what would have been finals day at the Monte Carlo Country Club elsewhere will bring you some of the big talking points. Coming from Andy. Murray and Novak Djokovic instagram session. This was an update from the tennis. Well this week including the postponement of the Labor Cup but Kim first. Let's start with Murray Novak Chat Friday evening had a long week at work and it was a very pleasant and nice way to kind of start the weekend. It was a conversation. I think that they had admitted they had no actually. Despite having these rivalry kind of gone for so long they never actually sat down. Had a chat with each other. So it's really pleasant kind of have that moment almost kind of be able to share it with the yeah. It was nice. Isn't it just them is kind of mates. I suppose just having a chat and that means Joe. They were clearly listening to fashion episode causing show that we did last week because the conversation turned at what point stand. Mann's excellent shorts that he won railing. Garo swift say clearly. They had tennis fashionable Nemo. And like we had I thought was funny because Jovic said if SAM was watching he should burn they shorts And I think she was watching because he did like At one point in the essay they show it during the right and guarantees e Mont. They say he called exactly. Yeah but maybe he's got a spare pair at home. I did love the fact that other tennis players joined didn't as well as kind of your general fans as well and it was kind of great to see some of those responses for some of the topics of up light stands short. I think curiosities Sleeve Kobe. Bryant tattoos was brought up as well say it was great to see you the kind of everyone kind of getting together and having a little bit lobe. Ever sit down because as you said. It's like you know these guys that you know. Generally speaking when we see them together is a head to head. It's a competitive environment and it's nice to have made like this. Where is a level playing field and just kind of talking as mates and I think some of the I think one of the big talker boys are one of the things they were discussing? Was that perfect. Tennis player. Agai through different sort of aspects of a tennis player. And saying who who they would like I found the most interesting thing was what they were talking about. Back cads returns of Sunday said they would prefer each other's each of his back. How does over time himself? Which I thought was quite interesting. Well I am being humble respect. Fourteen each other or was that the rule. They just couldn't take themselves so therefore oversee he would pick the the the wouldn't because they generally speaking I would say they are the best return for example. I was surprised. Jovic didn't pick rough maybe physical as well as mental. I thought maybe he was trying to like spread his His pigs around today. I'm I'm not sure but Pretty much agreed with all of their old of that picks picks along the line. But Yeah I mean. It's nice as well just to see them like eating because these guys. Yeah we we see them competing against each other. The end of the day the players get on say well the friends of each other and they must be missing that kind of camaraderie of being on the tour as well right now so. It's nice to do something like this isn't it and the fans can join in and and get as well exactly. Maybe maybe we'll do a future episode on talking about how we would build and structure our perfect tennis players. But that's just kind of give a listeners. Feeding catch it the the run through of what they they fought was that kind of perfect tone. Spy Say Novak Djokovic serve was either it was kind of between John is ner nick carry US return. Murray four hundred went for the Dow poetry full hand with a backhand Murray Volley Federal Man Tuna Dow and then physical yet domain Tame Strike David Farrar. An- Andy Murray Chose for his. I mean no surprises. He kind of went for seven. Apothecary else is now return. Novak Djokovic forehand rough on the Dow back can Djokovic Volley Federal Mental Nadeau Physical Jakovich. Maybe we should do. Yeah maybe we'll do an episode construct. All perfect I thought the one thing just looking at one other things maybe interests me is the Jakovich for his forehand shows. Really flat four hundred we've portray whereas Murray of C. Wet for the Dow's complete off the the massive credit four top speed and You know high. The showed is thought to be interesting. They chose different different approaches for different shots. I'm really surprised that she didn't pick carriers for you. Know his mental attitude. I mean a car. No match and why. They wouldn't have picked him for that. But maybe maybe they went for his his underarms. Maybe referencing that but yeah anyway in Albany Joe as slightly more serious thing is pays ad. It's come out but there are plans to play a relief fund fula ranked class. You're going to struggling a lot financially. current current time so jovic revealed on Friday that the plans for that player. Relief Fund would generate moving full million dollars. But the way they're going to do it will that outlining how they would do it. Is that everyone in the top hundred singles twenty doubles which country based on their ranking? Say for example those players in the top five would donate thirty thousand dollars each and then kind of below down the rankings. You go the less you would need donate into the prize ports. Not Too sure I mean I think is a great idea passing. They obviously is a lot of talk saying players shouldn't have to be helping out all the players like it's about. Atp tool they should be doing this. It shouldn't be a problem the players themselves to have to do this. But I think it's really nice initiative and I think the top players do have some responsibility to initiate something like this. Yeah I think it's it's an interesting one. I think it's a good place to saw. Obviously it's the intent. Is that to kind of help in that. Coastal of collective spirit. That kind of we're all in this. You know the the top players of their own initiatives kind of going on as well And Yeah it's very interesting. I feel like this is going to be a big is going to be a big talking point. It could open up a lot of. It is a kind of worms. I think a lot of people are going to have their own opinions and already kind of those opinions A different is like how great it should be on a sliding scale of of ranking or should it be something it should be something else. Is it Fatou on ranking? I think is one of the biggest kind of conversations and I think kind of doing something like this kind of highlights. The you know that wetness. The players ranked lower down need financial support. But you know. Is there an argument to say? Well you know how we got into a situation where we've needed a global you know global pathetic figures passive as the corona virus to to make to make something like this happen. Yeah I agree because eat at this. I mean how long term will make everyone take a more serious look at the pay structure with antennas? I know it's been on the agenda for a couple of years but hopefully this'll be kind of like the final push to actually make it much equitable. I mean the issue with this sliding scale was the the amount that they're sort of saying should be pushing Like ranking its way is to disproportionate. Say someone who's to one hundred in the world is actually going to be doing much. Larger percentage of their income than say joke rich in federal at the top of the game so therefore maybe it should be done. Just how much you could actually afford to give Or if you're going to do ranking perhaps what would be fair is to do on like ranking. That would be from the last couple of years. Like an equalized average ranking because a lot of players like for example Dan Evans. He's just going into the top thirty. He's just go back. He's not going to have an awful lot of money from top tournaments that he would be like Able to access at that ranking like. It's all very new to him. So as conversely other place he would be in the top one hundred and then maybe a much lower at the moment because of injury but yet they would have a much more financial capacity to give a bit more or to treat this. Obviously no system is perfect. It's like a new idea. They're going to have to. I guess. Run three these issues but the inspire. The idea is very nice but I think perhaps they just need to kind of streamline and make kind of sense of some of these inconsistencies are going on. Yeah I think as you said I think conversely people like Jack Circle people who've gone on the rankings. He had to get have had. That had that moment and made a lot of money. Jacksonville finals power. Small says etcetera. It doesn't feel like he would benefit that much. For this sort of your relief fund this kind of Aimed at plays. We'll have similar rankings. Maybe around him. I think it's kind of like this. Does this effort from the players but I think also needs to be from the tournaments as well And it will be interesting to see you know. I told him it's like you know Wimbledon for example whether the prize money whether they still kind of look to distribute that to players on notice spin some sort of chatter and some talk about you know first round prize money being distributed to make sure the players. Because I think if you if you don't support these players farther down we might get into a situation where they might be more vulnerable than ever say of them. Kinda going down roots of match fixing and betting which we know that kind of tennis has a history wave when you know we will not repeat itself but this might be. This feels like a moment. Where if we don't do something? It might lead players to yet. It's kind of desperate desperate. Meshes Yeah and how many are going to be able to stop again? When when they're allowed to you know there's a lot of investments and expenditure that go into just traveling the tool so some players might just find that they they just cannot afford to stop again. Say Yeah I mean I think they're all various other schemes. Think the WGN for someone has a loan scheme going on but in reality I think the criteria for as she being able to get financial help. You know isn't kind of what they say. If that makes sense it's you have to meet certain criteria and it's audit and I think this is. This is a step in the right direction. So that's a positive thing. We'll read bit as much positive news this weekend right now. I suppose one other thing Joe. That's been announced this week In relation to make arenavirus is the Labor Cup has been postponed to twenty twenty one so not a big surprise is just the latest in series of events. Go oversee this is an exhibition. So it's certainly not as Important as for example the slams and it was going to coincide with the newly scheduled French shape and so I guess it's just for the best now that Labor has decided to kind of delay For Year yes. That's still a pall of became a just. I think there's going to be any bladders played this season. But let's say Fidel there is a as as you said. I think he is completely a completely makes sense. The you know the priority is given to Grand Slams.

"However obviously during the the possibility existed. They're going to move the tournament so I think. I think that that's something that we're going to hear more about With there's also a little more to it than that because the cup has also thrown in. Its two cents So this is the Labor Cup statement. Now this is supposed to take place in Boston all right so this is what the liver cups had to say. This is their statement on the schedule. The tennis world learn today that the French Tennis Federation intends to schedule Roland Garros from September twentieth to October Fourth. Twenty twenty due to the impact of the corona virus or while they said Co via D nineteen These dates overlap with dates of Labor Cup. Twenty twenty already sold out and scheduled for September twenty fifth to twenty seventh twenty twenty at TD Garden in Boston. This announcement came as surprised us and our partners tennis Australia. The USDA in the ATP raises many questions. We are assessing the situation. At this time. We want our fans sponsors broadcasters and staff volunteers players and the Great City of Boston to know that we intend to hold the cup twenty twenty as currently scheduled so Well that's Interesting yeah that is definitely definitely interesting. So obviously this has really rubbed Lever Cup and the US Open the US USDA at the wrong way. Clearly they are not happy about this And again I said earlier. I think that communication is key here. You have to communicate with the other entities tennis entities across the world. It's not just about rolling garrison I get it. They are not under anybody's umbrella. They don't have to talk to anybody. I get that but especially given the situation that we currently have you need. You need to communicate you need to talk to the other tennis leagues around the world just to make this decision knowing full. Well you drop Roland Garros where they drop it they know what other tournaments they're they know. Labor cups there the near the US Open just happened And there's other things in there too. It's not just them. Look September twenty. First there's no ATP event which obviously is recap right You have September twenty first. Wt event in Seal Tokyo Right. So you also have the twenty eighth and ATP event And Sofia Zoo high And then you have on the twenty eighth to September a Deputy Event. Wuhan those those are all things that are conflicting now with Roland. Garros where it's at now. So maybe if they had called up the WTN ATP had a big round table discussion and said what can we do here? How can we make this work? Maybe they could have come to a consensus. We said okay. Fine we can move this around. We can move this but when you make a decision by yourself and you don't consult with anybody else about it with all the other events okay. Fine they're not grand slams while the US openness but all these other events they may not be a a grand slam. They're still important events and they still mean something to the the places the locales that are being held in like Labor Cop. They're all sold out. What do you do there? I guess you could move it. Try TO I suppose. I don't know I it's not just saying okay. Fine will will move it to week after Roland Garros Wooden. Because they're probably the tournaments that would conflict too so again. It's it's a crazy situation. But you've gotta communicate and I think this reheating illustrates just how poorly this was thought out. It's not that I disagree with moving rule. Garris two different place in the schedule. I'm surprised by it. Surprised shocked by the fact that even moved it. I just assumed they were gonNA cancel it But fine if you're going to move it great but talk to other people call up the head of the ATP WTA consult with them. Work something out. See what you can do. Don't just say hey we're moving wrong. Garris this. The two week Slot in the in the schedule that we're going to drop it. Don't like it too bad. We will carry us. Don't do that that that's I get it. It's a crazy situation and you're trying to salvage something here but don't just drop things and say you guys figure it out not our problem you yeah you can do it. I guess but it's going to rub people the wrong way and it doesn't help and players that are now defending points in those four while they were cups different but you know the WTO the ATP tournaments so what do they do their they. Don't move it then. You might have players that say you know. I'm the defending champion on. What do I do now? Especially if you're in the back end of the US Open or what if your Somebody that won Tokyo last year. Would you say well I want it? Should I play Roland Garros? Should I play Tokyo do here? You're forcing players to make decisions. That I I guess they really shouldn't have to make again consultation. Working together this would have solved or at least one of assisted in the decisions that were being made here and they simply didn't do at least based on what I've read so far and I could be wrong but it looks like this was simply dropped and everyone a hostile adjust to it. So that's kind of my thoughts on all this Don't really know there's anything else to add here. I just wanted to talk about some of this stuff. That's happened here. The cancellation of the rest of the clay season. The moving of Roland Garros the freezing of the ranking points. Those are all I really wanted to touch on There may be other stuff out there. I don't know but I will check in. And if more news pops up here I will do another episode. I will drop it as soon as I can. Here and You know if you have any questions if you have any opinions on the stuff that's happened. I definitely would like to hear about it. You can contact me on twitter at Tennis Addict Pod and let me know what you think now. You can also sending your feedback to the email tennis addict. Podcast AT JIMBO DOT COM. And let me know your thoughts. Did well the French Federation. Do they make the right decision? Here right. Should they have consulted Do you think that this is their choice? They can do whatever they want Either at tournaments just have to deal with it What are your thoughts and the ranking freeze are the I guess? The ranking freeze The points freeze. And what do you think about the rest of the clay season being cancelled Just any thoughts you might have on these subjects and anything else if you There's something you want me to talk about Cover on the next episode Don't be afraid to you. Know suggest something But the most important thing here. Rumor folks is that As much as I love tennis I want people to be safe. And I want people to be healthy and includes you Do whatever you have to do to stay safe out there Self isolate Just just be careful Do what you can To just make sure that you're healthy I know a lot of older people get hit with this and they are susceptible. But but don't believe that if you're younger that you're gonNA be fine There are a lot of reports out there that a lot of younger people are big. Don't get affected as much by the virus but their people. There are a lot of younger people that are in the in the hospital in severe health situations because of the current virus. Don't believe that this is only going to affect like older people. And they're the ones that are they're the only ones that are really susceptible to this Virus so again. Just be safe. Take all the precautions. Wash hands Social distancing all of it the other thing you can To just be as healthy as possible and you know. Try to stay positive. You know help others when you can But I just try to to keep a positive attitude as much as you can. That's hard right now but we have to try and do as much as we can to stay honesty to stay a little sane these days so That's kind of all wanted to to say here and Just it's it's been hard hard on the a.

"I mean how how long this carries on and how much it can be improved in. There are pluses and minuses we. We know that I've enjoyed the week so fob but tonight was was jarring now. Yes Matt was denied aged going into the French press cards however he went bowling into Novak Djokovic is press conference today we heard from him yesterday Novak Talking About Harry thought that Davis Cup an ATP Cup should merge Matt has been asking him a bit of a follower. Never listen to this Novak. I just just wanted to follow up on something you said yesterday that you think maybe the ATP cop in Davis Cup should merge come together Yep A news suggested is it a week in September perhaps the US Open now oversee. The kind of elephant in the room is that the Labor Cup currently occupies that place in the calendar. Just so it's I'm just wondering What are your thoughts about the long term future of that competition in its place in the calendar in this discussion about team competitions? And do you think other team. Competition should take priority over it. Well Labor Cup is Very important for tennis. I think it has proven in the last three years that By attracting the best tennis players in the world and also the legends of our sport and presenting a unique concept to tennis which is A very similar also copy paste Ryder Cup in Golf. is something that has Generated a lot of interest in a lot of if Benefits for for tennis. That is the reason why it's in the ATP calendar even does does not have points but it is regarded as an important competition for your future of tennis and I definitely think Labor Cup should you know be supported by the tennis community But at the same time you know when we talk about team competitions Davis Cup has always. He's been the one that stands out the most historic one and Unfortunately in the last three years that also I've been let's say say part of this kind of negotiations and conversations that were happening between the F. and ATP and Cosmos and Different sides that were involved and There was just no unfortunately solution or no deal for the merger of the two events but from the very very beginning the desire from both sides was always there and I and it's still there so there's chocolate it's talking about Labor Cup which is is quite interesting. Isn't it that was. That was a cool follow actually given that he didn't play it earlier this year and given the is obviously part of this this sort of political team soup that we've got going on right now it wasn't just being diplomatic. Do we think or do you feel like that is a position that he accepts is not going to change and live a copy is here to stay and actually that also I mean he's aww positive is though is frankly there's room for that end another possibly a little bit of both he was. He was quite diplomatic Kind of slightly slightly talk to round it And Yeah I do think he does think that now it's an you know in in conjunction with the ATP is going to make it kind of even even more difficult to prioritize something over that event that event. I don't think he's he's going anywhere so I think he just recognizes that it is another part of this kind of ongoing team competition problem bloom and he doesn't. He doesn't have the solution but I do think he speaks well on the topic as a whole and I do agree with his position. Basically I I I think the Labor should be kept. I must say and I think that the HP Cup and Davis Cup should be he combined and it should be called Davis Cup and it should be the best event it can possibly be and if we can reach a stage where those two things are possible. Then I I would be happy with that. I would as well I think that both by you and by joke which is very well put. I think where it reached a bit of an impasse is fat as identified by Jovic. There is a clearly desirable. There is a clearly number one desirable place for a team. Competition in in the men's calendars currently exists and Labor Cup pies. That place I. I'm perfectly happy for a he. Combined Davis Cup. ATP Cup which. I would want to be called Davis Cope Delay Cup to exist. I agree I think there's a place swoopes absolutely but I won't. I would want Davis Cup to be given priority in terms of scheduling And that's where I see the issue because that it is clearly the prime the prime position in the calendar clearly capturing can I can I ask do you feel that the should be the strongest longest possible Davis Cup in the strongest possible Fed Cup. Or do you feel that they should be combined in a heartbeat. I just see that is a I'm I'm I'm trying to be pragmatic rather than idealist Like to think that that's a real possibility. Bit Given where we all currently gently Just reconciling issues with the men's calendar is Is Difficult Enough But oh absolutely in a hot being no brainer combined find okay. I did have a somebody come back to me on twitter today and just make a very compelling case for the Fed Cup staying saying and being recognized in its own rights which. I didn't agree with person because I think Jen. You think that the strongest events listen tennis. All the grand slams are combined they are. They're everything and so if we had a team version of that then all the better but that's Yeah I mean I take your point I just listened to that chat the CEO from Ninety F- sad did wonder whether actually you know maybe in a few years if really is the strive drive and they make that a priority. What why not just finally somebody keeps about away White Matt's just quickly before we move on from Jackovitch just something you said to us earlier today? Matt Solvency fairly new to this world and US. You know you were setting you can change. Yeah but he went running out of the the kind of magic doing a video of himself today. So we're flying and you went into Novak's explain. That was a great question you asked him and use. You said to us after that he kind of makes it quite easy to ask a question to. Can you just explain what you mean. Well because he he always gives questions his full attention. I think if if it's a reasonable reasonable question that he doesn't feel has some kind of handle or agenda if it's just a straight question he will you in the eye and he will answer it and it's it's I think is quite I mean. I feel quite comfortable asking him questions. In comparison to some other players for example who might right kind of chop you down. I don't I've not had the experience where he's going to do that and I think he has done that but not with me and yeah yeah I just I feel like he. He's thoughtful and I appreciate that. So that's Serbia through their plan. Russia Britney through as well and there was no today. What was going on there eating being biscuits well? Yeah he's not he's he is not physically ready for this. The intensity of this competition Shen and actually something that he said in that interview that we ran on the coast about ten days ago now with with he was speaking the launch of his Kostov with several journalists. You were there David. He said such confidence. Matt I did. I did go with sharks given any free stuff. We're not saying that Ryan to get free stuff so but he said that his physio thought that kind of going forward the slams are gonna be in the many ways despite the five sets easier events for him given the day off off and I think given the is not in his peak physical condition expecting him to play back to back days after three hour match was probably just not realistic and given the Britain have options in the singles. Columbine was kind of ready to go looking back at it. It's actually a a bit of a no brainer. The and marry didn't play today. I mean he was not in a good physical way yesterday. Who plays tomorrow? Now if Andy Murray is feeling refreshed D drop the British number one. Yes yeah I think I think it is only whole David. Says Drop Donovan's headlined Murray. I'm ready I'm ready to express online. Sorry yes I I've seen both as with with Dan Evans. And it's it's unfortunate for him because he played really well in both of them for set and a half and then he and I don't even think he went off that much in either of them he just he play two players that are bigger and stronger and hit the ball a heck of a lot harder other than he does and they just got on a roll I think he led a certain five three against Robin Hauser and he led a set and four three against Alexander they signed up today and Publix. third-set I don't I don't recall. Seeing tennis. Live from anyone he was he was hitting one hundred and thirty Eh and a second serves regularly and he was just trying to hit winners on every ball going in. He's really good fun he he is. I mean obviously He and Kukushkin lost doubles quite badly to Jamie. Murray Niels Kope up ski but Alexander Puplic in doubles was just an obsolete low fast. He was going. He was getting one hundred Asian. Thirty five MPH ACES on second serves and Kush givers turning round gang. May I'm here to you making making decisions for both of us so make better ones. I mean ludicrous. Awesome it also winning strategy but it was really entertaining and I think on on Dan Evans. He's if he were to play tomorrow uh-huh later today. I should say He would play Yanlin strove who while not quite as EXP- perhaps quite as explosive explosive and Sort of mercurial as public is very much of the same ilk in that he can completely take Max away from you with his power and his big serve and I think therefore matchup wise. It might be an idea to move it about tomorrow. Put put Mary back in after his his day off. Although Leeann Smith was Bhai no means particularly confident about that and think But if he might do that then you can shift Edmund. Up The number one position Edmund was awesome today. He was immense. He was was like purposeful and exotic aggressive. All the things you want to be. He was it was a little bit scary when he was fist. Pumping and chest bumping again. You know that we don't see often and when we do it takes you back a little bit. But he was great from from right from the start. I thought OKAY EDMONDS EDMONDS UP FOR LISTS. He's probably well he's bringing bringing in an energy to the core which he just hasn't done not not just on tour but he hasn't really done. It Davis Capo that often. Either it was a it was a totally different Edmund and also I thought Leon John Smith was a lot more vocal on the bench within. He was really sort of standing up after every point getting not getting in his face but really a encouraging him and Smith can sometimes be a captain that but also he can be quiet passive. Sometimes it just depends on the situation. He oversee read. The car was just this ball of energy today and was feeding them. If we had confirmation from Colorado and that the Franco in K.. Divine partnership is go. 'cause it was on a trial basis in Paris. Wasn't it yeah. They're kind of still going to be traveling a little bit sir. I heard I heard it was on now. Yeah it's officially on is no longer trial. Yeah but call today that still kind on of in the early period obviously because they don't really know each other yet so he's going to spend some time off season just trying to get to know a bit more with a with a view to felice fully starting starting next season Russia. Yeah how do you. How do coaches and players get to know one? It's interesting questions speed dating. We've had collard man's fist pumping and chest bumping. We've had matt running. I've had a NAP my first nathen six years. Yeah that was the biggest indictment of the Davis Cup scheduling call. The weird broke. David David Law did. I didn't afford their feel really weird anyway enough of that whenever another one for six years. What else has happened today? I what what happened six years ago and you had an APP somebody said. Let's start podcast and Tighten up all my time since right. So yeah that. That's what's happened on court today More quarterfinals tomorrow. Some very sad odd news today in that Rebecca about history. Good hat to return home. His father's passed away which is really sad for him and And we we wish him well. We had better news in as much as our competition. Andrew Millard was in Madrid today and had a lovely time. But but you didn't get saying that he escaped your clutches busy starring in movies. Yeah he was. He was an video on the On the Davis Cup finals website So well done under the lovely day and You go home with some very happy memories away from the Davis Cup finals. We've had some coaching changes folks. Because Angelique Kerber has announced her new coach. All of my predictions have not happened in terms into the coaching. Carousel Dittmar kindle. Men who used to be with a lease is going to be the new coach. He wasn't with the lease mountains anymore. Yes that's not being over here Isla Tomjanovich last year and and how about this one. Diana Yastrzembsky is the player that is hired Sasha engine which is John has shifted you pronunciation. Enunciate Earth because I've been told have been getting it wrong for the last five. Not that someone in the know budgen batting everything buying think that I thought he was basically working with Kim Clijsters. No that was that was somebody who is just inventing venting stuff in order to try to get clicks. Catherine I do think okay. Yes no it was definitely really. I thought it was GONNA be clicks. Somebody who invents things to get clicks a lot. I thought it was going to be gobbled mcgrew who I should budgen ended up with by account do this now and it turns out not as an company. Magritte's this is GonNa be with speculates that she'll get back to cheat Maltese. But it would be lovely a for a number of reasons but I knew that Sir.

"COM podcast onion a panic guys i Marino county our guest today is nick mccarville he is seen and heard all over the world according as well as on-court emceeing and he got his start as a writer nick mccarville joins us in New York City which is where he lives and we talk about everything from how he got his Argentina's reporting and how he made the switch from writing to being on camera we also go over his schedule and how he manages traveling all over the world as well as his memories that include interviews with Roger Fetter of course who else let's jump right into that interview with Nick mccarville thank you for joining us thanks for having me like our makeshift midtown studio fancy podcast stuff happening or in New York and we caught neck on his way to fly because what else would you be doing it's actually funny because When I was an intern at tennis magazine actually to get an internship at tennis magazine I brought a suitcase into the lobby to go apply as I was of as headed out of town in New York I was there here visiting friends for Thanksgiving and literally twelve years later here I am back at Tennis Channel Tennessee com with a suitcase things have changed but we're still in New York City with our suitcases dragging around makeshift studio so yeah life is good life is good tell us a little bit about post. US Open Life what he's been up to Yeah I post US Open had some time off which was great and then it to Geneva to Labor Cup which is really cool I'd never been to Switzerland which was awesome and it was pretty cool to see that whole set up with I mean is essentially the Roger Federer Copen the Roger Cup In Geneva the fans were so into Federer in Switzerland and I think that when they have that first iteration of Labor Cup they wanted to have it in Switzerland very soon after it started and so to see all of that fanfare for Federer for Labor Cup in Geneva was really cool and I did that social media hosting and some stuff with tennis Australia team that was there and I've been hanging out just like catching on a lot of work stuff that I had during the summer that kind of built up okay so nick I have to ask I am like super huge fetter fan and you know people think that if you're in your home country like they'll probably leave you alone if you're such a big deal but like can he even walk around without being bothered like I've always wondered that Yeah I don't have a clear answer it's a good question but I saw a couple of times we did events within the city and there were like active crowds arounds ederer and obviously you know they opening ceremonies sort of thing at the government building that was really cool and there's a huge amount of fans there I think most of them for Roger and then a couple times we're leaving the hotel he was staying at and there were definitely people gathered around to take pictures and stuff but I did see miracle at one point the kids in the minivan I don't know where they were going but like she was driving which I was like a little bit surprised by was like Oh America's driving the kids around Switzerland which makes sense Ah I we didn't follow respecting America's privacy because I know it's good for me yes I mean that's like a half answer but I think that obviously people everywhere in Switzerland know him know who he is but I think he can still lead somewhat of a normal life esh you get nervous interviewing him because you've done It alive my my most memorable standout Nick Macabre moment is you interviewing Roger Federer in the twitter Blue Room in Australia after he won you also have been Serena select course everyone got to go through the twitter blue room but is there a bit of a different level when you're talking to him or you kind of your professional your cool I mean I'm never professional or cool I always attempt to be both and I fail but no I mean Raj at Labor Cup is so chill because it is his vance right and so he was so easy work with Joe I mean he's always easy to work with but especially in Geneva like I pulled him in for a few things kind of last minute because social media's always on the bottom of the totem pole after the you like TV's and newspapers and that kind of thing so the one that's still gets me a little bit as Rafa like I feel like sometimes rough does or doesn't want to do stuff so I try to be that'd be calculated when I actually asked Ross to do something because I feel like sometimes he's not in the mood to do things I agree I get that vibe and you're not alone there they get that vibe to I'm not even work with them now nowhere near as much as you have but Roger makes things Kinda feel comfortable especially Labor which is what you said it's like he's way more relaxed but ofo makes me feel anxious and kind of makes everyone feel anxious and it's no knock on Rafa either like he is just kind of his personality also comes into a room and he'll shake everyone's hand and say hello and be you know very cordial but I think he's they just have to do so much that I try to be a little more like on my game whereas Roger may be makes you feel relaxed like that's kind of his approach do you do they recognize you does he like South Nick No yeah I actually don't know I I mean I always say hey roger how are you introduce myself every time but I've kind of gotten past the point of carrying if the players know my name I used to like I used to be a thing where I was the player to know my name and I'm just like okay I'm as long as we have a good interview and they feel comfortable and I'm asking somewhat interesting questions than I'm pretty that'd be lovely okay so you've been to all the grand slams so you were at Labor Cup I mean what kind of energy was that like how different from Grand Slam to Labor Cup I mean what are the major differences that you found being there well it's just a completely different event overall fan energy was really awesome and I did Chicago last year as well when it was here which is really cool and the energy in that stadium I the one thing I always sort of given example of Labor Cup because they're still those people out there that are kind of like what is this event and it's so funny it's flooding I mean I I agree with you like we've got to figure out what it is and I think hopefully in the next few years it will but last year in Chicago the entire United Center getting rowdy for Diego Schwartzman that to me is like a pit of misers layup sort of its power but Irene I think it's just a different event overall than a Grand Slam I mean you know it's particular sessions the matches are shorter there's fewer matches it's only three days but the energy is big and the team aspect like people buy into more the demoralized vs Europe thing than I thought they would which is really cool when you're in the venue and it feels like Europe definitely felt like the home team in Geneva which school I love it I was in Chicago last year so I know you talking about is a different different five and as someone working at you feel a lot more comfortable oh I think because there are more comfortable and laid back so I totally get what you're saying but I want to ask a little bit about your star you know I know you started more the writing side than being in front of the era so let's go through the timeline of Nick mccarville tennis reporting career was God because I know a little bit about it but it's it's good you can't see every night and the podcast but she just yawned as you ask that question so I had to call you I'm not I'm sorry I just had a rough night asleep it's funny I know that I shouldn't be ups come on Tell Jet Lag oscillators real so much more annoying than Australia jetlag don't like what is going on I'm so sorry did not could not be worse No it actually I mean I I kind of a little anecdote at the start but I literally was here being friends in two thousand six when I was in college and was like I really want an internship at tennis magazine that was like the big thing for me and I was flying out that Monday after Thanksgiving wing and rolled my suitcase into the office and went up to the front desk manager and was like hey can can I apply for an internship and that summer I interned at tennis magazine we're just cool it was like kind of my first foray into tennis journalism I didn't tennis blogging college and then like they're soon after once I came to New York I was still doing a little bit but kind of my like big break within tennis journalism was in two thousand nine I had been in New York for a year and the New York Times I just started like a whole family of blogs and one of those blogs was called straight-sets which was the tennis blog for the New York Times so I started writing for them most of an unpaid they paid a little bit for certain blogs that they would end up using on the website in different sections but that was kind of my I like breakthrough and then from there I worked on some side projects and got my first writing job with them. MSNBC DOT COM in two thousand and ten the next year and then slowly started making my way into the tennis world that's like way way back I remember for some reason the first memory our first thing I came across was USA. Today I mean so I I worked so I was with at Msnbc and then the daily beast which is a news website and then in the summer of two thousand twelve I got offered to do NBC Olympics coverage for their website as well as work on the US Open APP I was like the APP copywriter so I did all of the copy for the US Open Up in twenty twelve which is it's so funny like how different apps work now like I was specifically hired just for that but those two gigs basically spurred me to start doing the tournament work as Irena Sanger Donald at the Grand Slams and that got me into like writing for tournament websites social media helping people manage their websites overall like digital content and then in two thousand fifteen USA Today hired me as their tennis reporter so I did that for ears Twenty fifteen and sixteen and did that cool feature about Irena in Paris and her airbnb do you remember that my boyfriend actually he still has that like newspaper he was like you know we were on the front page of USA Today and I'm like you look back early actually yeah that was pretty cool yeah and I was actually going along with what you were saying I mean everybody has a story I think we're actually may have been co workers back in two thousand ten because I was doing tennis blogging New York Times at the time as well and so.

"To ration your energy what about women's side three and a Williams does what in twenty nineteen. Man. That's tough. I mean, I still feel like she's the player to beat whenever she shows up, which I guess I could you could say about job of its way he ended the year. So maybe I'll just give her two slams as well. Right. That's that would put her over the top. That would be that'd be a new record. So so someone I suspect you will see in Bradenton. What are we spec from my own Asaka? Naomi osaka. Yeah. I think she. The problem is when I've seen her play the only two times I've seen her play. She was amazing Indian Wells in the US. I mean good the times that I watched her, right? And I'm thinking, she's she's Serena Williams except younger right now the way she plays the ball huge. It's big second serve moves. Really? Well, you know hits hits hits big overpowering. Intimidating. So that. Naomi sock. It could be the next number one in my mind. But I don't know what happens the other. On those tournaments -solutely. Yeah. It's hard for me to because I didn't see her play tournaments. He wasn't doing. Well. And I don't know what happens when she loses. The just missing. That's what I can't hit me like some sort of crisis of confidence moments too. But no, I think I I think it's a really good sign that you've played pretty well after the US open wasn't like. But I gonna have much interaction with the pros. And you mentioned it Corey Asaka number of players who I suspect are going to be on the court next to you pretty soon. Yet. Now, I will have some interaction with the pros. Well, but most of the pros come with with their coaches. So you know, I'll be out there a little bit with them. But I don't wanna step in any anybody's toes, and that sort of even within the program a lot of the times, I go to the coach the group leader. I when I see something with a kid that I think this needs to be changed. Right. I don't I don't go to the kid. I go to the coach. And we talk it over, and he'll tell me where this kids come from. Maybe that's too advanced for where he is right now. You know, I leave it up to the coach a little bit. And that's the same thing. I would do with the with the pros. That's good management right there. So last question, what is the ideal number of team cups in men's tennis zero one two or three? I mean, I. Good answer because I would say one except I thought the labor Cup was the coolest thing I've ever seen. Right. And you know, and I I honestly Davis Cup because I when I was a kid growing up. The Davis Cup was was basically as big as any major. You know, it's one thing you definitely saw on TV Davis Cup tie. And so I have a special place sort of in my heart for Davis Cup. It has lost a little its luster over the years. And like I said I love the labor Cup..

"So you're talking about Doha that was the one that they said we'll continue to ten you might continue in India. All right. But the Australia thrown we'll be populated by people like the full fest funny. It's funny. The best average plan in Mongolian. Yeah. The best doesn't get in by virtue of being one of the twenty four nations. So you know, they'll have some reasonable player. Damian Juma will probably be twenty. Anyway, fifteen million massive where he would be in the list of twenty four countries. But that's not the point the point is that if you want to play tennis in the week before the Australian Nathan technically two weeks straight Nathan. You're going to have to play the ATP Cup. With very few exceptions. So they had a very into show up that offense video montage which all these big name players. Novak Djokovic made a brief appearance. Hence, the thing was ten minutes late, obviously. But he didn't stay for questions. One of the reasons he didn't stay questions is because only about sixteen hours earlier Novak Djokovic. She said the idea of having to such tournaments average tournaments. They would become is unsustainable. And then he's wheeled out to promote this new ATP cub, which is announcing that will be two events that that. What were the question the questions that were asked to Chris commode who was there from the standpoint and Cray Tyler from Tennis, Australia stem point who is heavily involved in oversea? The staging of the Cup plus co or shareholder of the labor Cup. The the questions that were asked is this sustainable, you know, the joke of quotes were put to them. What did you make of their responses? I think Craig is wasn't the about whether he's wearing too many shoes that was the fray. You gotta ask that question. We might say hats in in British. But it was a good question. And it was a very valid point. And he said look, yes, you're asking me about having your three apron the labor Cup dwell Team Cup. Yeah. I'm saying I'm proud of all these events. And I think they're all tennis, and they're all -tracting funds. I'm other defending Tennis, Australia said that they they risk takers. They wouldn't be where they all. Now if they hadn't been prepared to. Make big gestures and on the little bit. I mean, they've turned the Australian Abrahams office into the all the tournament is the biggest and the best in the world. Spectator number certainty. So I thought it was a good defense. I'm being very frustrated with the whole International Tennis Federation political drama, and I think it does actually have echoes of Brexit in the way that people will miss sold member nations miss sold. They were under the impression that they were gonna get better week on November twenty first to twenty four next year. That's a pretty terrible week eighteen countries to be involved. So I'm very frustrated with the way that they've had the whole thing. I think that'd be a lot of murky goings on in the background. I wonder if David not we'll survive the next election. More sympathy with the ATP Tennis Australia position. I do the IT. But that's just me. See ding, some very firm nodding throughout the last portion of what's I'm saying that I just think it it doesn't make sense to have these. We were discussing earlier the Davis Cup when when it happened for some players want involved here at the ATP they've got to keep training for another two two to three weeks before they can go to their offseason, and it just makes it that much longer. So I think the week is crazy. I'm sad. See the Davis Cup go. I I love the patriot grounds so many young players. Even Andy Murray, they they got their love for tennis coming along to watch the Davis Cup. I think it was. I'm sad to see that part of his Rigo that we won't ever see that, you know, wonderful matches that everyone remembers talks about the many many years, and that's just gone. It's going to become another event listening to it all just think they've got an bash their heads together come up with one that whatever they're going to call it and have. At that week at the start of the season with however, many countries they are in have one team com. That seems to me what Novak Djokovic was inting at because nobody wants to play a whole week against all different nations. Right at the end of the season..

"Even before the incident happened the radiance on it was extremely high. In fact, I believe it was the highest rated one of the of tournament just like the bachelorette. I think of Wimbledon was also the highest rated for Wimbledon as well. So the profile was certainly growing it shows the strength of obviously, Serena Williams, and what she means to our sport and our tour. But obviously anytime you get stories like that it certainly raises raises the profile as well. Because of the debate and everything that surrounds it. We're not looking for that. There are other stories we would much prefer to have and be talking about. And hopefully, that's where we we. Evolved from this. You mentioned labor Cup were you in Chicago. I was not in Chicago now, but it seems like a real story in the tennis ether dysphoric has been these these global competitions and. Who knows of tennis has the capacity for three of them, which which are now on the table. But regardless I is this something WTA's looking at you've been a bit on the sidelines, which might not be a bad thing. But is there any reason why these would not work for women's tennis as well? Well, no, I think that fans fans love team competitions. I think that that there's I mean look at the Ryder Cup look at the labor Cup. You know, look at at the excitement that comes around, you know, Davis Cup ties and Fed Cup ties in certain countries and everything you can see the passion. You can see the patriotism and the players enjoy it as well. We would love to we have been on the sidelines, but we would love to to have a team competition on the women's side as well. The challenge with it is one of the reasons we've been looking at it a little bit differently as as you reflected earlier, we have an extremely full calendar, and we have to I don't want to shove event within the calendar that has a detrimental effect on the other sanctions and members and events that we currently have. So we're certainly oath. Open to looking at these. There are options that have been put in front of us that we will continue to look at. But I wanna make sure that it is integrated within the calendar that makes sense from a flow perspective, and we can get the athletes there and build on something that can be special versus just stuffing something and the talent that has other negative flow on offense. I always wanted this, but more so now than ever at this this cultural moment were having what challenges do you confront the male executive overseeing a female league..

"Hi, super John. Lady gaga. She sounds like that midler. She's fine. Here's the understatement of the day. Hey, lady Gaga can sure saying. I see that movie. Yeah. Same here. Candace Jordan got to hang out with Bradley Cooper, one of the other guys. I often get confused with. I gotta find your Mike von about that Kenneth Jordan's here, our friend. Nice to see a fabulous is always. Well, it's good. It's radio because my eyes are a little bit. You look great. Thank you. I was trying to figure out the last time you actually went home because you're out every night somewhere. Where does he energy come from like, you know, I've told you this before it's in my DNA. My parents were like night owls, and I just take after them. I just loved I don't I don't wanna miss anything. That's the bottom line. So I kinda much to my husband's chagrin say yes to any opportunity. You know, what I wanted to just quietly off the record confidentially semi this stuff. You turned down because I just want to see the list of things a candidate says not anyway, let's let's talk about some of the people you've been hanging out on Roger Federer. Yeah. Well, okay. Is he handsome or what besides the fact that he's a great tennis star, obviously. But he was not only for the labor Cup, of course. But he was also in time because he is a brand ambassador for Barilla's pasta. And so they hosted a very intimate a luncheon at a restaurant there's like thirty people that were invited. And he was there with Michaela Schifrin. Who is a gold medalist set in alpine skier? And of course, the poor girl was kind of overlooked because it was a real filled with women. Take thrice off a better. But he he talked to everyone. Chef Joe flam there who has this season winner for that. Season fifteen. He fixed a fabulous meal and federal talked to everybody took pictures with really personable. He is extremely personable. And he is even more handsome in person than he is you know in photo. How would you compare them to Dave Hanson was David now that they've doesn't have that beard? I don't know that's kind of tie can't shoot. Happy to see him eating pasta because I'm a big proponent of carbohydrates pasta and people have cut them out of their diet. So oh, no he had. And you know, what was funny they serve all of us. And I shouldn't complain. It was a free lunch. So they served all of us. These little tiny bowls of pasta, and he got one that's like the site for. Hey. And so we we are sucked ours up, right? How about you help a girl out? That's right. Finishes played. So now were you tennis fan? I am a tennis fan. Yeah. Because you know, Jimmy Connors is a very good friend of mine. Oh, that's right because you know, his wife, and I were centerfolds together. And so no, I love tennis. But my heart might be switched to Federer. Glad to hear. He's a good guy. And Sanford mentioned Bradley Cooper, Bradley Cooper. You know, it's interesting because inside the actors studio is going away. James lipton. Anything is ninety two years old, and they just announced his retirement. He's going full time in the knee pillow business, maybe in the knee pillow business. Hey, tried to sell us one of those a year ago. But Bradley Cooper was a graduate in one of the cool things you can find on YouTube is he on with Lipton. You know, once he made it, but also there's clips of him in the crowd asking questions of stars as he was a student coming up again, I've never been he seems like a great guy. He is a great guy. And you know, obviously, I think this movie is going to win every award possible. I mean, it was riveting over two hours. You did. There was not one moment of downtime in the film. And I'll tell you what was a little disappointing. If I can say any part of Bradley Cooper's disappointing in the film. He's got this very deep. Low sexy voice. Like, I say was also in the film, of course, as it turns out he comes out, and he has at long straggling sexy, rockstar hair. It's so when he came out he's got like, plus cut. Any speaking them like two different higher octaves? Wait a minute. Here's rockstar. And it turns out that he had studied with coach for over a year five days a week, four hours a day to lower his voice and active. So that part of it was disappointing. You think about the discipline to that? Yeah. Twenty hours a week, just working on your voice. Yeah. It was. It was really something else. And you gotta do my ADD kicking hard. How hard is that? I'm rich shell it's not coal mining. I just couldn't focus. Another movie that I loved was when they did all the scenes on stage at these rock concerts, and they really filled them at real rock concerts, because he was trying to keep under a thirty eight million dollar budget, which he said was low he made deals with bands. Well, the thing is that at Glastonbury. He asked the one of the performance was Chris Christopherson who was. Thanks, a star is born. And so he had to ask him to cede his time. So he could come on stage to film, which he did which I thought was kind of cool. Lady Gaga is great in the movie. He's while she was fabulous in the movie. And he said that when she came onstage at in every scene. She risked at all. He said, you know, she knows that. She was good actress, obviously, she's a great singer. But she just laid it all on the line, and and it show because it was you didn't feel like anybody was doing. It was like you were peaking in on private Bradley Cooper can sing. Well, apparently saw but only in the deep rock Scarver. Right. She did say that. He did all of a sudden. Yeah. Yeah. It was very very fabulous. What are you doing for Chicago? I'm going to be well, quite frankly, if I may say, so I am proud to be there on the Iraq Tober second fundraiser luncheon. And it's flare fashion show lunch. And then there's going to be several local. You know, like take a test. Katiba Macy's some other people that are going to be involved and that's going to be at the Lowes hotel. And you know, these programs are going to be for kids and teens that are visually impaired. And so this particular fashion show raises funds for that. And I'm so excited you shouldn't do so much as an emcee as a spokesperson. But but you do so much for for a lot of non profits and charities and town, what's the key? When when you're in that luncheon, and you're at that gala and you're on the microphone, and you're the person who is introducing give us some tips. If wherever in those situations, what's the what's the best way to be an MC for one of those not be nervous, which isn't easy to say. And sometimes hard to do, but it comes off from repetitiveness. And you know, the more you do it the more comfortable you are. And I've been doing I've been modeling since I was thirteen. So I've been in front of a camera in front of a crowd. And so it kind of comes easy for me. But I also love the energy when you get on stage. I mean, it's a lot like, you know, these. Huge rockstars. I'm I can't imagine what they feel with those crowds of hundreds of thousands of people. But you know, and you also want to make the audience understand what the reason for them being there. So it's a very earnest kind of situation to be in. And you just want to make sure that you sell that organization to the crowd. So they'll raise funds and money, and you're the Palo raise will be successful. So I get a big kick out of it. And I really good at the paddle raise. If you got good at the what is the coin time shoulder. No, I will never be good at either asking for money. Things. I'm not good at. No, I can't I read your fanny I would work for free because I can't ask any money buddy for any money. Listen to you. And I'd be great together you MC, and I shake down the crowd for. You're on time. Ira, welcome one thing that Candice has really done. That's been impressive is in a business of movers, and shakers and entertainment, and that type of seen a lot of people tend to go younger all the time. They want the youngest newest thing in she represents you represent an ageless. Nice way to put it where it doesn't matter. You know, your stuff, and you stay current and relevant to do the homework. Yeah. Well, you know, look at these notes my God. I've peppered your desk with them while I'm hanging out with red. What your friends are doing food? Listen, you should have been at the screen ball. It was it blew the doors off the Garrity with red for, you know, read full. Party rock anthem. I mean, I stayed till the lights came on at this party. And I haven't did poor little thing. Yeah. He was there with me was he allowed to does at the table. He doesn't just put your hand on your your head on your hand. And pretend you're paying attention. He does Haydn corners where I can't find him. I just introduced reintroduced Candice to our boss Stephanie because they know each other from years ago, but they Stephanie was also debt green tie Bob at Stephanie laughed at nine fifty eight PM. So. You know, you get a lot of energy when you're doing a co-chairing gigs. All right last question. What's a no class reunion? Well, a no class reunion is where all the different classes come together because each class individually is not large enough to make a real party. And so we had it over the weekend in my hometown, do cO Eleanor and all my friends were there, and we, you know, have you graduated with about eighty are hundred people in my class everybody from my class that showed up which made for a very poor pitiful class picture, right? So so everybody comes as a good time. But you also see people from other classes. Oh, that's fun. They should be. You know, going back. Home is always good. It's good for the soul. But you know, what about president? Can I mention prince forget about Prince Edward? What did you do them? So well, he girlfriends of mine, Sean, Montgomery Mary last year. They hosted this party that prince was at and he was in town to promote films without borders, which is a nonprofit UK based nonprofit that provides filmmaking opportunities for kids fifteenth nineteen and it was it was an unbelievable party very associate can private and about fifty people showed up, but he was the most that he's the queen's youngest son. And he was the kindest sweetest guy very handsome in person. And but I love the Royal protocol. I don't know have you met royalty before som-. I've not unless you can include day. Well, there are certain things that you have to do you have to be when you first meet him you have to call him your Royal highness? And then after the conversation goes, then you can call him, sir. And the women have to Bob a little curtsey and men bow their heads. So now, you know now, you're prepared. Thank goodness. Because if I bump into anybody from the Royal family today, I want to be when you see this video when you have to follow those rules, the curtsy with my knees, it'd be a problem and the handsome Bart. Always intrigued me between Chuck and Edward because they look like brothers from a different family. Well, they do. And you know, he doesn't have a lot of hair, but he's got a really pretty sweet face. And he slammed his slide. He's not a big, man. And he's talking about Megan it, all when Meghan Markle. I don't think that was allowed not bring her up. Listen, no one else. Get a task. Eddie. Great great to see you. Thanks for having me was feel more awake. When you're around. It's the great Jordan. "Event you see players who normally compete with each other on the same team rooting for each other competing for the cup in this case the labor cup and at this year's event you're just mentioning roger federer twenty time grand slam champion will be making his first time ever appearance in chicago after labor cup how about that wherein win so this'll be taking place from september twenty first three twenty third at the united center there's five sessions of tenants over those three days fans can see the top players compete in both singles and doubles and for more details can always go to labor cups dot com when you guys announced this i was at a blackhawks game and rod laver was there that night sitting in the box next to us in his first hockey game ever and he was a good sport about it wasn't exactly enthralled with it but he was very excited talking about the labor cup and as it should be because as i said we don't get we don't get enough chance to see great tennis and we see some of the old guys come through an exhibitions but this is the top of the game right it is now that was a great night rod actually got to meet bobby hold the hand so to great legends together at the hockey game but as you mentioned the event was initially initially conceived by roger federer way to recognize rod labor and many consider roger the greatest of all time and he says rod is the greatest all time when rod played you had to be an amateur to play the grand slam tournaments you couldn't make a living planning and so after winning all four majors in nineteen sixty two rod joined up with some other of the top players and went pro and they started their own barnstorming tour and from nineteen sixty two or sixty eight he couldn't play the grand slams and if forced the majors to once again allow those pros back in creating the open era and that then led to the great expansion of tennis and the opportunity for roger federer and others to make a great living playing over all all over the world and so this was rogers idea to give something back to rise tell this story let the.
