He's having a premiere, and they want me to come out there on the 14th of April for the premiere. Yeah, he's got the documentary coming out, right? He's telling his side of the story. In contrast to the HBO, I don't think I'm going. I know you would go, but bye bye. What do you mean I go on max? Come on, man. Just wait. It's a three. It would be a three day experience. Is before the time winning though? This is before, man. You know, I can't stumble. I can't stomach the smile and the laughter and all the stuff that goes along with the real funny part about it was that my ex teammate, I played with the Clippers for a minute, just how he was involved in knowing Nixon and to see that that's right. Son is playing his role. And that's what was so funny. I was like, he really looks like norm and then somebody said, oh yeah, that's norm son. No I'm junior with lady. I didn't know that. The role of non Nixon. This is why you could put me on to these type of the backstory. Debbie Allen's wife, husband. You don't know Debbie Allen? Debbie Allen. Found familiar. On that movie fame at one time. She was a famous dancer. She's been on a couple of the Dancing with the Stars that you don't know. I can't explain who it was, but okay, her sister is Felicia Rashad. Who was the huxtable? Oh, yeah. That's fair. Yeah. Her sister. And Debbie Allen was famous for a police show was famous. And then him and norm, they met together and they got married. And that's when they knew. Yeah. Yeah, right now he's nervous because he's afraid this rookie point guard, I'm going to take a spot, but he's confident now. He's thinking during training camp right now. That's where they are in the show right. So yeah, it's good. It's not bad. It's not bad. You know me, man. I'm a historian, especially with basketball. "The NASA minute. With Kevin mason. Tonight, episode two of the new HBO HBO Max TV show series, I guess you'd say, called winning time about the 1980s LA Lakers. It's done by Adam McKay, the guy who worked with Will Ferrell for many years on funny or die and was over this particular project, they had a falling out. But what's interesting to me is not the story of the Lakers. I mean, I know the real story, but what's more fascinating to me are the people playing the parts. Some famous actors with some interesting roles, people you would normally expect to be one thing and then turning up to be another. And I don't want to spoil it for you who's already shown up and who's going to show up in the future. But it's one of those series that even if you're not a big sports fan, you'll be interested in going, I think that's so and so. John C Reilly plays doctor Jerry buss, the man who owned the Lakers. And he wasn't the first choice, in fact he wasn't even really the second or third choice I don't think, but he does a great job of playing it. It's very fascinating, and again, even if you're not a sports fan, it's very entertaining. At least the first episode was, I can't wait for episode two tonight of winning time.

"You know, talk about that is that I still love the guy, you know? I still love them and I love them so much. I gave the guy a hug, you know, and then I wasn't afraid of catching that. COVID is a different thing, but it was, I think it would break our team. It would hurt that would hurt the team badly. And I think it's gonna hurt that Brooklyn team. If Kyrie decides to do what he's gonna do, it's gonna hurt, man. And that's a different situation than Wiggins because you need Kyrie. I'd argue in Golden State, they don't need Wiggins. Nearly as much, so if it's one of those situations where it's like he's impacting the team in a negative way, but they don't know if he got a shot, right? 'cause they ask him, the reporter asked him, he said, that's my personal business. Yeah, or like, oh, I mean, we don't know. And I think, you know, yeah, it could be a personal business, but you gotta tell the team, man, because if you're gonna be around us and you're not vaccinated, you gotta tell the team and I guess I just, again, just wish that they just do the right thing. Whatever it is for them or for their loved ones or for, you know, whatever just do the right thing 'cause the NBA is on all time high. And look, you gonna miss Kyrie? And it's like you said, like, you know, my dad was telling me like when the polio vaccine came out, like nobody questioned whether or not we're going to get it. Everybody got it because they didn't want polio. Social media hurts. You know, guys are getting misinformation and they're seeing this, they're seeing that. They read certain things and, you know, I have a Facebook, but I've never, ever, ever been on Facebook, all right. Never. I've never been on Facebook. I have a Facebook and my wife kind of maintains it and looks and you know, I get from my Friends, she said, hey, such a step from 1970 is trying to get in touch with you. I don't think Facebook. I have an Instagram. I personally don't do Instagram. My wife she does it. I think you're smart. You know, that's not the world I grew up in. So I don't let that world rule me. You know, a lot of my information, I get off the TV and every now and then a good thing come across. But I got a new iPhone. That's what I got. Really nice. Information off that. But with that graph, again, talking about the Lakers, who they got to beat. You know, Ari, I think that's about enough for right now, because we've covered everything. I'm telling everybody right now. And I know bet online is one of our sponsors or people that's here. And we got to shoot something for them in a minute. But I'm betting online this year, man, 'cause the Lakers gonna win a championship. I'm putting my money down. If you don't back, don't go out and save Michael Cooper told you to, but you know what? You gonna miss out on a lot of money. What if the Powerball is about 627 million? Now out here in California, I think it's about going to play that..

"Down the stretch of really important games. Did they want the offense going through the broader? They want the offense going through Russell Westbrook, right? I think with games on the line, it's going to run through LeBron. I really do. But what made LeBron, the so called the now goat because he is one of the greatest of all times, is that his ability to share the ball. He understands what it takes to win. And I think he got that going to Miami. That was Dwyane Wade and Shaq's team. They opened they walking him with open arms. And he eventually became that player. So I think that's his reception of players coming to the Lakers. He did that with AD. I mean, he resorted to him a lot of times. I think he'll do that with Russ too to a certain extent. Yeah, 'cause that's gonna be the key. I mean, Russell we're every been, you know, the offense has been run through him and then you look at the Oklahoma City fetter days. That's the one area where it was like, and even a little bit in Houston, but you know, LeBron strength is, at the end of the game and crucial moments, the offense should go through him. He is he's got some magic in him, obviously, and so there's, you know, he needs to initiate the offense, but then I mean, his Westbrook off the floor is he playing off the ball and you know, I'm just curious to see that dynamic. Because again, it's going to play out through the course of the year. I think there will be lineups with Westbrook out there without LeBron. I think that's a good luxury they can have to sort of let him run that second. That second group, sometimes with Westbrook, but then I think it comes down to like crucial moments, crucial games, the offense, as you said, should go through the brawn, but how does that look? Is Westbrook on the floor I'd imagine so he's going to be one of the best 5, but how does that how does that look? That's going to be the most important subplot to this season to watch it play out. You know, as a coach and I'm looking at this situation from a coach's eye, not a player as a coach, one of the great things that Frank Vogel has is he has a luxury of a talented team kind of I think they're gonna be a little stubborn team until they get things going because again, we haven't even talked about Carmelo Anthony. And some of the other ones more rondo. We haven't even talked about them..

"I understood what they were going with that. But back to the current Lakers, I think LeBron can get all these people playing in the right direction. I think AD's on board. I think the white Howard you had him, you letting go and getting back. So he's on board. I think Deandre Jordan is a very crucial piece too, simply for the fact is he does the things that AD did when the Lakers won their first championship in the bubble. He's the player. Yeah, he's developing. Yeah. And he's going to get lost. I think he's better than JaVale McGee. I agree. So I think that was a big plus. The only one that can be considered a loose cannon would be Westbrook, but I think in this situation here, you're gonna need that loose cannon. So the days that LeBron don't play because of the load management situation, you can let Westbrook do what he has done in the past with other teams. You just let him kind of run wild and do certain things. But I don't think he's going to be and I say run wild a loose turn with that because I think he's going to be more under control than at any point in time in his career. Being back here in LA, being with the Lakers, he's back home. He has an opportunity. This is probably his best opportunity other than first couple of years. He was in an okay scene when they had heartening Durant down there with him. This is his best opportunity to kind of go out with a bang. If you want to use that and say, I don't think this is last year. But he's on the end of his road, man. And, you know, everybody wants to at least play for a championship. And win one. And I think he has that opportunity now. If I were, and I think you're right about Deandre Jordan, I mean, I mentioned Java McGee because you brought up after they let him go, how crucial a piece he was and Deandre Jordan has been has a similar skill set to Java McGee but he's a better player. I agree. I mean, he's better rebounder. He's a prolific rebounder. And Deandre Jordan got a chip on his shoulder because if they see Brooklyn, boy, they got some coming 'cause they put that guy in the doghouse this past season, man and put him under the doghouse. So, again, I'm pretty sure he's rooting for Brooklyn to get past Milwaukee. That's the name one team because there's many teams on the east, and we're going to talk about that in our next show, right now we just focus on the Lakers and the west as a player that don't really pay big dividends for the Lakers. But let me ask you, I wonder how much LeBron and Frank Vogel will watch some of the tape from old Oklahoma City Thunder days when Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook played together. And LeBron's a different player than KD, but I guess I just wondered down the stretch of really important games. Did they want the offense going through the broader? They want the offense going through Russell Westbrook. We're back and better than ever. All eyes are on the gridline as teams are back.

"I thought they needed perimeter defense. You know, they have this. They had this thing about thinking that Caruso was going to be that guy. Caruso was a good defender, but he was in my mind a better team defender than an individual defender. He wasn't a Michael Cooper, who was like that tile that just was all over the place. You know, while we're speaking to Michael Cooper, before we get going here, and you cut me off, I want to say it publicly again that you go down in my book as one of the greatest if not the greatest defensive player to ever play because you played defense on four or 5 different positions. And people that don't play don't know how hard that is, you know, you can lock up one guy, you know, if it's a point guard, yeah, I can get, but now you go over to that big shooting guard or that small forward or back in the day when you played there were guys called power force today. There's no power forwards. Everybody say, come on, senators are playing at 6 AD. There's no real physicality to the game, so they don't try to take advantage of the size differential that they tried to do with you. So and I think if you don't believe me, believe Larry Burton said that you were the toughest kid you were toughest guy he had to go against. Thank you, Steve. That's nice words from you. Just stand on that track for a minute about the best defensive players. Who would you consider a good two? Give me two names of good defensive players in today's game. Wow. Wow. I'm gonna throw one at you and I really like this young man. Draymond green, what do you think of him? Well, yeah, I definitely think draymond is one of those, because that's his forte aside from being a facilitator. His forehead is defending. And he defends again. It doesn't matter. That's why when they're healthy, defensively, they can get it done, because they play a 5 man statement they can switch every position because draymond, you don't have to worry about him switching out on pick and rolls against that small guard to drink one of them out there and guard them. So, yeah, he's one of those that can do that. But there are a lot of two way players out there that I like, you know, be prior to the injury to his knee. This season, again, you've got it Kawhi Leonardo. I thought, was really a defender. I remember quiet San Diego state when he was in college. I thought he's going to be an all defensive team in the NBA for ten consecutive years . Never envisioned that he would develop into the offensive player that he has developed into. So he's one of those good two bird plays, but there are a number of players in the NBA that believe it or not can play some defense. So I'm gonna say it right here to be our last question for you. And I'm putting myself out there now. And again, I think it's gonna be on what coach Vogel do as far as pulling that chemistry and keeping that team together. And again, the biggest point you made if they're healthy, the Lakers are going to win the championship this year. Can I get you on my fan wagon? Way to go out on that limb. I like it when guys go out on that little early. Don't wait until fourth game of the finals and the Lakers are up three to three to one. Exactly. And then say they're going to go out there early..

"Of my most famous people of all time. I mean, I played a briefly for Bill and the Lakers. But this is a guy that just when you talk about true humans, I mean, this guy was truly something special. And he brought all of his coaching talents, mixed those with his obvious talents as a person. And that's why he was a successful as he was. But I still gave so much to the game that he gave his voice because then later on after that, he goes hard to understand bill but I could understand everything he said, but that's how much he loved the game of basketball. Didn't know the sidelines screaming at us when we were making mistakes and it caused you to yeah. It cost him it cost him his voice. You know, we joke about it now, but as you said, you know, that's something that we look back on. And I wish obviously wish that he wouldn't have lost his voice to that degree because he had so much to say, but as every losses was he kind of got off the away from the court, he got kind of quiet. You know, he didn't, I don't think he felt comfortable with the way his voice sounded. Wilt Chamberlain, oh, the big fella. One of the nicest people you want me to. This guy, I remember we were back in the old days. We used to play double headers, especially in the preseason. We'd have 14 play double headers. And, you know, one time that the will was playing in the second game. So he sees us before the first game. And he's says, you guys have got to cheer for me when we come out because nobody likes the big guys. You know, you know, back when the big guys were villains that he didn't get a whole lot of cheers. So he'd say, you guys better cheer for me, but he was something special. The only thing I remember about that big fellow, you know what, you know, you call a time out and the ball boys are bringing you some Gatorade. I look down the bench. He's drinking a cord of 7 up or something. I mean like big fellow, how are you doing this and going out and playing? And he would play 48 minutes. I mean, didn't come out of game. One year he averaged 48.5 minutes per game in that obviously meant that he played a lot of the overtime as well. Still, there's a story going around that Bill Sharma and one day. That's how we got shoot around. When they used to come in early and built with smoking a cigarette and he asked Billy said, coach, do you want it now or do you want it tonight? 'cause you only get it once. That's a true story, man. Told me that story. He said that he called this shoot around and will said a bill. I'm only going to the arena one time today. "You are now considered the voice of the Lakers. How did that make you feel? Well, it makes me feel good that people kind of associate me with chick to begin with. You know, there's still time till today that I'll be walking on the street or something. Somebody will say, hey, chick, I mean, too. I mean, it kind of really gives me a compliment to me that they associate me with. I tell all the people that I've worked with after chick that no disrespect. Just be yourself because you're not going to be able to feel those shoes. There's nobody. There's going to be able to feel those shoes. So let's just go out and have some fun and be ourselves. And that's what we've tried to do. What are some of your go ahead, are you? What are some of your greatest memories calling Laker games? Wow. There's so many great moments in Laker history that, you know, and this is just going into my 35th season with the Lakers. So I've got an overload of things. But, you know, I think success is always something that stands out in your head. But I think when I think about the history of the game and the history of the Lakers, the one thing that always stands out to me is the moment that chick made a comeback..

"You can rebuild. You can recreate. You can change this. You can adapt and sometimes we live in the moment. We were just like. Oh no this is all there is and it's not going right right now not realizing that. There's always a growth now one of the areas. We don't see growth is that there aren't many other women yet. That general managers of franchises. And i think that that's something that we are going to see. Change it is something that you're a forefront leader in will inspire so many. Do you ever feel though that. And this is an honest question. Do you ever find that lonely. Oh do you find that inspiring. Like how do you see that. I do you see that as like. Oh no one understands me. And no one can relate to me because there's not many of us and as you said you've had such amazing mentors in that space who've also felt that loneliness inspiration. How do you process that. I know what it meant to me as a young person to see women in positions of power and how inspiring that west for me you know in the last forty years. I've seen a lot of change in Women having powerful positions in all areas of sports and entertainment And you know it. It's just my advice to two. Young women is to follow your passion and you know that remegio to where want to be and you know if you feel that that being a woman you know. It's such a competitive business. That if if if somebody wants to get an edge on new or they think that if they can push your because you're a woman because you you might think you're less than than they are than than a man then. They've they've found your button. They've found a way to get to you. So you know. I can tell you that gender doesn't matter you know it's you know people are what matter talent is what matters. And that's what we'll take you to. Where wanna go how much. How much have you engaged with. Genie with whether it's therapy or mindfulness. In your own practice in your life like how much of that has been useful to you. Because of the extreme pressure you've had to handled throughout has that been a tool that you've reached into your toolkit that is that it's been powerful for you absolutely. i think. Therapy has been a huge benefit from me. I even had the experience of going to group therapy. Which was really really valuable and i are so many opportunities for people now before it was like there was something that people kept quiet or did talk about but i think the more we can shine a light on it and show how valuable tool it is about Learning about yourself in group therapy one of the things that i learned was It was a co ed group. Probably about Ten or twelve people. Forget and these new people you. You didn't know none didn't know about the same age. In you know experience. I was going through my divorce and so a coed group was good for me people just dealing with everyday problems and finding a place where they can discuss it or there was there was one guy that no matter what i couldn't connect with him like everything i said made face add just didn't like anything and i knew it was. I was coming to white where i was going to have to confront him and ask him..

And today's guest is going to take us to another level. I've been looking forward to this conversation for quite some time since we connected on instagram and through mutual friend and today. I've been a. I always talk about this. There's there's very few teams that are known internationally. I was born and raised in london and so the only two teams we ever really heard about what the chicago bulls in the league. Those are the two biggest teams. I've been a lakers fan. Since and when i moved to la only two years ago. I think i moved here at the same time. Lebron came across. And i was thinking. Oh this is this is this is great timing for me and it was absolutely amazing to watch but i saw that adam silver the nba commissioner reasoning called you nba royalty. What does that mean to you. How does that feel. I guess you could say. I was born into this position. And so maybe that's how royalty fits into the equation. Because i don't feel that i've privileged or you know have just been given something without a lot of work but you know to have adam silver. Say that about me. I think it's just because i've been around forty years in this business. No i completely agree with you. And that's what. I want to dive in today. I think from what. I know of you. What i've learned about you. You have so much depth and such journey to share with us today and you're absolutely right that often the media and the news like in the three minute interview you miss that context of someone in who they are and today. I hope we get to learn that. I wanted to start with your childhood and because i think childhood is so important in framing who we are..

LeBron James calls bubble “the most challenging thing I’ve ever done” in NBA

"But let's go to the NBA where, of course, the NBA finals finally here. Takes Place and begins tomorrow in the bubble of course, the La Lakers against the Miami Heat and there's been a lot of talk about. Should there be an astro on his championship. Whoever wins it? And Robin I both agree no, it's ridiculous. We're not just throw out asterix. Asterix four when one team or player had an unfair advantage over the rest of the guys he was competing with. and. In the bubble, everybody's going about the same business they all got to stay into bubble. They all were away from their family for the same amount of time they all have had to deal with everything going on down there. So I don't think there's an asterix but some. Have gone to the opposite extreme. And said, there should be a middle asterix because this is actually tougher. They, any other? Championship that you would have to win in the NBA history. And none other than Lebron James. Kind of lead gave credence to that thought. Today or yesterday with his recent comments about how tough it's been to be in the bubble how tough it will be the go ahead and complete this thing with title probably the most challenging thing I've ever done. As far as professional as far as the commitment something and actually. Making it through. A knew what I was coming. Where we're coming here for obviously, you didn't. I will be line if I said up here to new that everything inside bubble what it would not the tower that would take. On your mind body. And everything else can it's been. It's been extremely tone, but you know I'm I'm here for one reason and one reason only and has to compete for a championship and that was my mindset. Once I aired the bubble once enter quarantine process I today's, and then right from my first practice mindset bus to be here, make the most of it on and say what you can do in lock him on with the main thing is and the main tangles frosted finish the before championship. So that's just my mindset. Throughout these I don't even know how many days it is whatever how many days it is. It feels like five years really doesn't. But. I've been as locked in as I've ever been in my career. I think that's good. Honest talk from Lebron. James. Look Yonezawa Kuhn talked about he was the first one to say, yeah I think he deserves an asterix because it's going GonNa be the hardest NBA title ever you know paraphrase a little bit but that was his sentiment Paul George of the clippers you know he talked about how the bubble had him depressed

"The NBA's Milwaukee Bucks. The team with the best record in the League decided not to take the floor for game five of their playoff series against Orlando. The players made the decision to call for change following the police shooting of Jacob Lake in Kenosha Wisconsin the later postponed that game as. Well as to whether that were set to take place. The cause was later taken up by the WNBA several baseball teams, several major league soccer teams, and tennis player Naomi Osaka former. NBA Player Chris Webber gave emotional analysis of the Milwaukee players decision last night delivering a powerful message on what would have been the live telecast of the game we understand is not gonna end but that does not mean young men that you don't do anything. Don't listen to these people telling you don't do anything because it's not going to end right away. You were starting something for the next generation and the next generation to take over you have to be smart. Yes. Do you have to make sure that you have a plan. Yes. Do you have to be articulate about that plan? Yes. All of those things but that's what you're going to do. They're professionals they know how to be the best of themselves. And so I applaud it I applaud it because it is the young people is the young people leading the way. And I applaud.
