LA Kings' Star Goaltender Pheonix Copley Weighs In on Athlete Compensation

"The LA Kings just came in. I was doing some research. I think they're ranked ninth on the valuation list at $1 .39 billion as an organization. One of the things that I'm curious to learn more about is how athletes feel about the fact that NFL teams are worth seven, $8 billion and players are only getting paid millions of dollars. And they're the product at the end of the day that is put on the ice, put on the field and generating that income and generating all that external wealth for these billionaires who are then able to capitalize on this. And I'm always curious, you know, why couldn't they share some of that equity and maybe provide a bit more? Did some of the guys in the D room share a similar? If you're trying to get me canceled. No, no, no. Cause I was talking with the cousin and her husband actually specifically around this topic. And I'm not going to have you saying that. No, I'm not. Because I'm capable of saying all this because there is some to be said around athletes and being paid a fair amount for what they deserve. And I think you look at running backs in the NFL right now, for example, and like Google and YouTube creating music that's now being generated and produced and now artists aren't getting paid what they deserve. So there's a huge disparity around artists, professional athletes. At the end of the day, everyone's creators building and they're wealth, generational wealth for the individuals who are now at the top benefiting from it. So I'm always curious to hear like, if there's, is that sentiment there from athletes? Is that sentiment there from the players in the D room thinking that, hey, maybe, you know, we should get treated well? Or I guess maybe a fair question that won't get you canceled is, what's it like in the D room at the crypto .com? Are you guys getting fed well? Are they taking care of you? Are they making sure that you're, you know, in tip -top shape set up for success? Yeah, absolutely. I think the standard now is I think it's gotten so high with probably all major sports leagues where, you know, they're feeding us really well, lunch, breakfast, all that. But I will comment on what you're saying before. I think that's kind of just business in general. I think, you know, the people who are running the show, they're always the ones who get to set these prices. And so they're the ones who get, I guess, the, to reap those kind of benefits. At the end of the day, we are, you know, we're doing what we love, but we are also employees. We are, you know, if you break it down far enough, kind of just pieces of meat that, you know, we have to do our job and if we don't, then we're out. So that's kind of, you know, it's like any business you have a job to do. If you don't do it, then they're going to find someone who will. So fortunately I get to do a job I love. So I'm happy to play hockey for a living, but yeah, I think that's just kind of how business is. You, if you're not running the show, then, you know, the guy who is in charge and they get to set the prices.

"You're not gonna just <Speech_Male> back <Speech_Male> away from <Speech_Male> that. You're he stuck <Speech_Male> in that position if you <Speech_Male> feel comfortable. <Speech_Male> And then that means <Speech_Male> all the sudden velocity. <Speech_Male> You know you <Speech_Male> need to find a new place <Speech_Male> you know in this <Speech_Male> roster to be valuable <Speech_Male> does it open <Speech_Male> up his career. Who knows <Speech_Male> we'll find out <Speech_Male> but at the same time. <Speech_Male> Yeah i think three <Speech_Male> is probably the <Speech_Male> juiciest thing because we've <Speech_Male> got most <Speech_Male> everything else slotted <Speech_Male> in except <Speech_Male> for you know <Speech_Male> where to the other <Speech_Male> seven forwards land <Speech_Male> beyond <Speech_Male> that. I think the <Speech_Male> big one that'll be most <Speech_Male> interesting to see is <Speech_Male> definitely it'd <SpeakerChange> be that three <Speech_Male> c. Roll the nice <Speech_Male> thing from a fan. Perspective <Speech_Male> is worse. <Speech_Male> We're beginning to see <Speech_Male> now. <Speech_Male> The the <Speech_Male> benefits <Speech_Male> of having <Speech_Male> depth in your prospect <Speech_Male> pool because <Speech_Male> such a great thing in <Speech_Male> previous seasons <Speech_Male> guys that <Speech_Male> were drafted in <Speech_Male> deep arounds <Speech_Male> would get hype <Speech_Male> and get attention <Silence> that you know maybe <Speech_Male> was <Speech_Male> too much <Speech_Male> for them being <Speech_Male> as much <Speech_Male> for them personally but i <Silence> mean like you know <Speech_Male> people <Speech_Telephony_Male> get worked up in worried <Speech_Telephony_Male> about second round <Speech_Telephony_Male> third round draft picks. <Speech_Male> Because you don't have <Speech_Male> a guy taken <Speech_Male> second overall or fifth <Speech_Male> overall <SpeakerChange> what what <Silence> have you <Silence> <Speech_Male> So <Speech_Telephony_Male> one final thought before <Speech_Male> we wrap this up. <Speech_Male> Because i <Speech_Male> heard and i <Speech_Male> know my impulse in the passes <Speech_Male> always been <Speech_Male> a. What's the point <Speech_Telephony_Male> of trading a guy for <Speech_Male> a fourth round pick who cares <Speech_Male> fourth round. Pick <Speech_Male> whatever but we saw in this <Speech_Male> past draft the value <Speech_Male> of having <Speech_Male> again not only <Speech_Male> depth within your player <Speech_Telephony_Male> pool but also <Speech_Male> within your pick bull because <Speech_Male> once you have all <Speech_Male> those guys now <Speech_Male> of you can <Speech_Male> absolutely use <Speech_Male> those third round fourth <Speech_Male> round fifth round. Six <Speech_Male> around seventh round picks. <Speech_Male> Move <Speech_Male> up move up. Get <Speech_Male> the guys you want. And <Speech_Male> even though the kings four <Speech_Male> guys at this most <Silence> recent draft <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> stables <Speech_Male> extremely ecstatic <Speech_Male> with the strategy <Speech_Male> that unity and <Speech_Male> blake exactly <Speech_Male> and they were <SpeakerChange> to <Speech_Male> guess great point <Speech_Male> anyway. That <Speech_Male> is going to wrap it up. Training <Speech_Male> camp kicks off at the <Speech_Male> end of next week. <Speech_Telephony_Male> But between now and then <Speech_Male> jerry. You're zantac <Speech_Male> you guys are both gonna <Speech_Male> be atvs zona watching <Speech_Male> the rookie. Not calling <Speech_Male> it. A tournaments <Speech_Male> should rookie face off <Speech_Male> <Speech_Telephony_Male> In arizona <Speech_Male> we will talk to you <Speech_Male> both about that when <Speech_Male> you return so good <Speech_Male> luck safe travels <Speech_Male> and <Speech_Male> the jacker is <Speech_Male> going to sit <SpeakerChange> around <Speech_Male> watching. <Speech_Male> Watch the live stream <Speech_Male> so <Speech_Male> anyway. "Where i'm from so that was How kind of went down and Advance wise. I knew a couple of days in advance that it might be possible but until you know a couple of picks before It was between you know a couple of different players so it was maybe ten minutes before the pick that we were for sure. I was for sure but going to do when you got a chance to turn your phone back on or get away from the podium. Where the how. Many text messages from From people watching there loss for sure in video hear from lots of people you run across over the years and people are genuinely excited and Happy for you whenever and You know it was It was a good moment for me and my family to to experience that and you know after that you kinda get right back to work and the draft keeps going and kinda back into it so something all appreciate Very much for a long time Happy that That kind of came off that way. I'm sure you're already At least have a list for two thousand twenty two about two thousand twenty three two thousand twenty four wins work beginning ernest on next year's quote unquote next year's draft whenever next year is Yeah we're we're starting to get things together. We've had some summer Stuff that you know. We don't put a honestok into but it kind of builds Who to watch lists so we're getting into that. So we kinda get geared up again Halfway through september and some rookie camp stuff some meetings and then on The leagues are going to start up in october. So you know it's not We're about a month away from from really being at games and We really focus on this year's draft and we're aware of some of the top players for the years after but as far as doing lists and and checking balances for years other than this draft year It doesn't make to to us. That doesn't make a lot of sense to waste energy and time on the year after year after so we're kind of mostly focused on on this year's upcoming draft last question. I'll let you go. I appreciate your time Did you get a chance to watch any of death camp in if you did. What did you think of brain clark. Yeah no i did. We have a way of watching on video here that they send out to us. It's very good So i thought he was solid a camp. I thought that was his game. What what was what was seen in how he played and Like all the players we just had a call with our development guys Yesterday going over each player and how everybody did it camp but You know. I thought that the younger guys are a little bit nervous. First time guys at camper a little bit nervous to start and they usually get better as the week goes on and i thought that was the case with him. Excellent chris thank you so much for joining me. Appreciate it anytime thanks..

"Yeah i don't think that's that's not really the process for us of one scout winning or or you know we we want to get the best player. We want to make the best pick for our team so the the fact that a player comes one area or not or one league or you know at a certain points. There isn't your own list and your own aerialist. Everything's merged into one And as you go on different scouts have more saying let's say and different management pieces have more saying let's say and different general managers at different teams have more sand the draft or less than the dry so it depends on the situation but We're not picking players at the top of the draft without a unity on our staff and majority of our staff thinking the same way and for the pick. We made with clark you know. Our guys really liked him especially at the at the age whole it seems like in recent years. There's been a premium on skill but also sort of a hidden focus on character. Lots of guys aware letters. Lots of guys that play for international teams gangs xining headway back to back years with nine players representing them at the world. Juniors this year could be nine again. If not more the fact that clark and pinelli both chose to find teams overseas to go play for.

"So obviously right off the top of the sixteen year old he's gonna kinda spark interest He had a slower first half and a six year old year and he had a very good second half sixteen year old year. And i can next remember watching a game with Rob blake us into watch. Somebody else's at all your. Here's a kid a a pretty good player and you know for next year's draft and You know so. We were aware of him as a sixteen year. Old of the top player coming into the oh l. and Have kind of enjoy watching human that year which we could have seen a more live Last year there's always a lot of speculation in any draft year. What players will be available when your team gets to pick you know. Who will they take. What's their internal ranking system. Not gonna ask reveal all of that. But from the king's perspective did brand. Clark fall to number eight you know. Were you excited. That he was still available when it was time for the kings to make their pick. Well definitely excited about getting him and You know evening out our prospect pool a little bit with the defenseman We're not picking for position. Obviously but the fact that it was in the wheelhouse where we were was was a good fit for us as well and we like player. We obviously liked them to go over our list. Obviously we're not gonna do that but You know i. It was the type of year where it wasn't surprising. Crew went in that in that first group of eight or ten. I think different people publications central scouting. Whatever had different rankings of all the players kind of after Maybe power so And i think power solidified himself at the world championships as as the the first pick in the draft but After that i think teams were vastly different. And who had what player. where so. We're happy to get him at eight and Guess are now it's our development Crew and and and our coaches that are going to get to mould him going forward. Wanna talk about that defensive. Stick that you mentioned There's a tweet a week or so ago. Bringing up eric. Carlson numbers from two thousand fifteen and they pointed out that his winds over placement is offensive events. Percentile powerplay percents Finishing brazil all of these different aspects of his game were ninety nine or one hundred percent down league but his even strength defensive impact was the was a bottom eleven percent. And you know as a kings fan. I've been hyper aware of the drew. Doughty versus erik carlson debate. And you know. I was pointing out that air carlson..

"I think one of my favorite college memories and this will be a hockey memory, cuz that's really all I did was play hockey. We were losing on my birthday. We were in ncaa's, final eight and we had to win this game to go to the final four years. And it was my junior. We were down playing Saint Lawrence. And right before the second. I just like stopped this three on one page, the transition was going. People had changed and it was myself and Mary was Sushi. And we went down, I scored on my birthday and for whatever reason we won the game Thursday we celebrated like rock stars after because we had actually overcome adversity on my birthday which was amazing. I'm mentioning it again but it was just like the greatest birthday gift ever to be able to contribute and then go to the Frozen Four for like the second year in a row, which was school record-breaking history at that point. So, yeah, I think that was one of my favorite memories apart from winning home is being pods all that stuff. But that is an amazing memorable memory from attending college. It sounds like it happened, right? Around your birthday. We're going, you had a excellent game. Relate weekend. You guys went out, you separated. So I absolutely love that memory that you just shared with us. Again, you guys are not listening to Blake Bolden athlete and LA Kings Scout. She is talking all the boss name is where I'm from and this podcast is called boss. Pays for a reason not only for women empowerment but of course boss boss is short for Boston. So blink again, thank you so much for joining me today. Check to Blue Sky sports and entertainment. I love that company, they do so many amazing things in and around the Boston area and blink is actually teamed up with them now. So let's hop right into it hockey at Boston College. I'm going to read off some stats. For those of you guys that don't know, Blake actually played at Boston College. Not only did she attend Boston College, he obviously played there. She just gave you a memory from playing at b, c p. In thirty-seven games, as a captain, her senior year totaling 29.06 goals and 23 assists. She actually had seven multi-point games that year and ranked second all-time BC defenseman and points goals and assists. Lots and lots of accolades while in college, playing hockey and academically as well. Including first-team hockey's. All-Star first-team, New England, all star and you actually earns the athletic director's award for academic achievement honors. So you obviously have way more accolades than that, that I just picked out a couple of them. What is it mean to you? To be such a decorated athlete, both academically and as an.

"I did it really talk too much because I met you before we moved around a lot. So quite often I was in New Kid in a school. And yeah, I just that's a part of life being bold as to kind of be like, you know what, I'm new and it's fine. And I need to get to know people and I need to open myself up, but I was in a shell as a kid, and I think when I found ice hockey, it allowed me to open myself up and become strong, and empowered, and confident. And I credit that to my mom's boyfriend when I was young. They met and his favorite sport was ice hockey. And he used to take me to the Gund arena in Cleveland Ohio, where the Cavs played, But now or back then it was the eye gel and the Cleveland Lumberjacks were there. So I would go to all these games and I would be able to go into the locker room because he had a media pass because you've worked part-time as a security guard there and it was awesome. It was like going to the amusement park every game that I got to go to. So I had like this interesting upbringing but it kind of perpetuated and allowed me to open up and just share the love of the game with everybody. I love how you are able to talk about the fact that you grew up with your mom and my mom kind of had you at a young age, which I feel like back in the day, that was kind of the thing. Like, my mama had actually had me at age twenty-three her, and my dad met in high school, so that was definitely the thing back in the day off or getting married young and having kids young. So don't feel like you are the only one out there and I love how u r, showcasing your, your skills, and your talents. And I like that ice hockey. Helped you take you out of your shell and it sounds like a game. We're the only child. I can't wait to hear about ice hockey, but do you have any fun birthday party memories? Would you celebrate your birthday when you were younger?.

And jeff carter becoming available on the same day that caught everybody off guard in had the kings landed a nearly kovalchuk or a brad richards. They can't get mike richards and later. Whatever was seven months. Get jeff carter So keeping that flexibility for that day when you know next year point maybe maybe dry seidel. Maybe the oilers do two years from now three years from now decide. Knock him right. Why not bad talk about history repeating itself but not a like in my ear mennonites. Mike cash will get my ear and he'll ask me. Who wanted the next whistle. Wanna see like. I always say. Connor mcdavid kings uniform. That'd be good. Absolutely you mentioned jesse. When the kings acquired mike richards. Jeff carter building you know leading up to the twenty twelve in the twenty fourteen ups the kings. I remember after the ten eleven season. Wasn't brad richards going to be available yet. And they went hardware guy. He's been everybody was talking about. And terry murray was the coach. And i think dean told. Terry i got richards and terry thought we'd that brad richard got the other edges. Which turned out to be fabulous. Obviously but that's going to bring us to our second last question and this one i did. I did wanna single this guy out. I'll start with you. Jim because i know you've had a lotta nice things to say about this season. That question was will drew. Doughty have a bounce back year And i think twenty games in the answer's pretty conclusive yeah. A movie chatted at the beginning of the season before the season started. You asked me for my number one thing. I was looking for that matter which drew doughty and how he would play First two games man. We were all worried because it just didn't work just didn't work. Are You Actually Kinky?

"Lately there have been some truly salacious stories on the news about powerful celebrity men who've crossed some lines with women they were dating and these have been sort of aftershocks of the metoo movement. Where these new accusations. I'm thinking of armie hammer. And the allegations of abuse and resume or marilyn manson's rape room brought back this important conversation on the ways that power and fame can be abused but the fascinating thing this time as the way. These celebrities have responded to these accusations because the reply is essentially. Oh no you don't understand. That was consensual. We are kinky kink is one of those things that's hard for people to understand myself included. Because i think for a long time i was like whatever you have your shit you do behind closed doors and that's your business. I don't really feel the need to interrogate too deeply beyond a basic sort of understanding. That shouldn't shame anyone else's kings you know and so when the internet seized on the gripping details of army hammers supposed cannibal fetish as like. Should we even be lampooning. This is this a legitimate kink. Would there be a right way to do this. But then i realize everyone was talking about. What a wild fixation this cannibalism thing supposed to be and there was much less focused on what army hammers accusers. Were actually saying about their relationship. Which was fetish or not. Their relationship started one way and then it took this turn we at the cut. Believe these women who are making these accusations and we believe that the men they were involved with are hiding behind the mantle of kink because kink isn't an excuse for abuse but in order for us to understand where the lines actually get crossed as a culture. We're going to have to engage with the ideas of kink much more fully in all of its richness and deep deep complexity. We understand that like you can be like vicariously like excited by violence even though real violence is disgusting. And you don't want to actually hurt people but it gets like framed in this way where it makes it sound like if somebody is kinky there beyond criticism and that's not what it means. This is lux traum. And i am a longtime sex educator and an abuse survivor someone who thinks a lot about abuse kink i think people think oh la king is choking people and kids like leaving bruises on people and can be but that's not really what it is so what is case. Everyone i talked to had a different way of explaining it. What keep means differs for different people will kick is a very specific subset of the arabic and it can mean a lot of things. If one feels that one is kinky then one is kinky for lux alp. Traum kink is very much about consent in a kink. Situation it might. It might look like the dam has all the power control but the real control lies with the submissive person. Because it's not the purest iteration of like safe consensual kink. Unless you can say no or say you're safe word or say whatever and make it all stop immediately. This is a very clear dividing line right for armie hammer. The women said stop and he kept going for marilyn manson. It was an entire lifestyle. Where if you said. Stop your punished more. But just like an all consensual sex kinky or not. There's a lot of nuance and negotiation. That needs to happen between the people involved. And it's all within this context of wanting to be giving there's so much pressure on you to be compliant too. Please your partner to do all these things. That has nothing to do with king but when you are in a kink environment that can like be taken to the nth degree because so much of kink about exploration about going into a known taboo terrain you have to be on the same page. There's these moments where i'm like. Oh or like. I would be surprised with the thing that i had never expressed interest in. I maybe didn't wanna do it. Don't think there is this bright dividing line between abuse and kink. All this stuff is just like there's no like three step guide for like dealing or there is but it's like talk to people have conversations like be willing it's the easiest thing in the hardest thing to hurt the ones you love to act out scenarios aren't normally like you to play with power. It's playing with fire. Really and yet culturally kink doesn't talked about with gravity until something goes horribly wrong gets whispered about as the super freaky unspeakable thing or it has a reputation of being a gonna dorky form of adult dungeons and dragons. You know like something. Couples try to spice up their marriage after reading fifty shades of grey. I think it's almost jumped straight from being arm. Something that's forbidden to being a cliche and being a joke and we skipped the part where we look at. It has to be taken just as seriously as anything else would do as humans. And i think that was part of what we were hoping to do with this analogy

"I don't know why this didn't occur to me. But i thought i had a hand on it. I thought it was a symbol conversation of like well saint louis colorado in vegas are gonna make it. And then there's a five-way fight between minnesota l. a. anaheim arizona and san jose and his jim fox said any of those five teams. Stick out or stand out as being better than the rest at the time. No now as it turns out. Minnesota look pretty good But think the news. Verse retro stor. Yeah they did although. I thought it was funny that somebody said minnesota wild brought to you by subway. But i the one thing i didn't take into account i don't know why i didn't take it into account because it's impacted every other question we've asked every team in the league and that is how will health impact the season because it's such a short season because the teams were playing these baseball style. You know two games in a row or more against the same opponent. Something as simple as two guys being out of the lineup or in the case of the new jersey devils ten guys being out of a lineup. That sort of thing can swing important stretches of already shortened season. and so. i'm looking at the standings right now as the time. We're recording eight thirty monday night. Saint louis colorado minnesota and vegas are all in the top four spots of terrible surprise. They are vegas played fewer games so they have a higher points percentage than else. But then you look at the bottom. And it's la anaheim airs zona san jose. San jose's looks pretty terrible minus nine goal differential two games under five hundred arizona. One game under five hundred with a minus two differential anaheim two games under five hundred with a minus eleven goal differential. That's not great and the kings of hanging around just at five hundred. Your goal differential. God jesse mine is one after the gangs. A i mean could la potentially catch minnesota. Like i think health is gonna play a huge role in that in that an end. There's just no and it's not even healthy because we don't know why athen issue in lozad are on the code protocol list. It could be as simple as you know. Whoever drove them to the rink tested positive and through contact tracing they were tagged and so they have to sit out. I don't know that that's what it is making that up completely. But i'm saying like it doesn't mean that they're unhealthy that like we had five guys out on code protocol earlier in the season. Valente velocity walker. Mcdermott and peterson defending of and even have covert. I don't think so. No and i won't comment on on the other three but i will comment about florida and volta. "They had secured a spot. I'm going to presume assume that already. Well as well and carter. So that i would have said those two are sort of gone and jared dolan anderson But i guess we'll see i mean that's the takeaway from this entire episode is ultimately will and at least we're getting to see and hopefully the season won't get you know cova doubt That's the thing i guess with vaccines coming. I believe i believe. I believe my wife. Say your stepmother. My just literally told me that. I've got an appointment for a vaccine Yeah yeah let's hope so Because they lowered the age and south carolina. And even though. I'm not that age for a couple more days. I'm in line a handful. The days that's right envel- exactly well. By the time. By the time you reach that age the kings will play at least one game on the schedule. I won't reveal played anymore. But i wanna thank you for joining me. Unfortunately we do have to wrap it up here to fit into glaring line. But thanks dad thanks. I look forward to seeing you Or hearing you on whichever games you're doing as many as i can Thanks for listening. We'll talk to you soon..

"What am i got to lose. I know know you know everyone's like well. Now they're in the division of saint louis but you know what surely over the last bunch of years the one thing that's been pretty consistent is teams that have been at the top end up at the bottom of the next year and teams were. The bottom seemed to end up near the top. So i just don't think you can never tell anymore and every so i have this sort of personal rule that anytime everybody agrees on one thing. Yes it's wrong. And everybody agrees that colorado saint louis in las vegas will be the top three teams in the new western division. And then you know it's like well who knows what it one of those three teams. I don't know which one one of those three teams is going to have a lousy year. Yeah i'm with you. I think for well i think i know which one to might be different. But i think it's the blues. Think in vegas but it could be the blue. Vegas is starting the season with only five defensemen so.

"But i also don't believe all the excuses that are being offered about you know playing partners and you know the team system and all that and everything i just see said it all the way through that first season when the floor fell out i just see a question of communication motivation. Coaching organizational direction. And he's slanted rockaway. I agree there's my prediction the best events men and everything. I think he's not the best defenceman in this. In the way that they need or meyer was the best defenseman right You know or couple of guys in chicago right like he's not the he's not the best defense in that he's absolutely one hundred percent dependable all the time always make you know or like go. What's his name from detroit. He's not You know who won the north hundred times Now i'm lacking. Let's lynch from. Yeah he's not the best defenseman like those guys you know he's a much more Emotional or i don't know you know loosey goosey kind of guy with so much talent that his you know when you when you go for job interviews. And they go well. Let's your biggest weakness. You just worked so hard right well. that's doughty. So i think what happens is when things aren't going properly he then try. It's that old. He tries to do too much he tries and i think that's where he just gets into trouble thinking this year he's going to and maybe that's the point of having only model with them I think when he just plays he will still be one of the best defense in the league. Now he's not twenty five anymore so you know nobody one of the things one of the things i've always liked about. And and what. I find really funny about the criticisms of that have always been leveled from the people who have figured out the gift of making content about analytics. He's not he doesn't excel at any one physical gift or one aspect of the game right. He doesn't have the hardest shot. He's not the fastest skater. He doesn't have the best plus minus or course your zone exits or whatever whatever whatever but on a penalty kill late in a game in importantly day against the top. You know what i mean like. He's still the only guy i've ever seen. Who can slide on his belly and swing his stick and actually successfully knocked the puck off the other guests. No he's he's broken up more to on monday and all that kind of stuff i think he just has the heart of a lion and like i say but he's not he he's not neither meyer..

"The easiest and then you don't have to move anyone from taxi squad out until unless you want strand sorry stranded because he'll be sent down to ontario. Unless you want lee anderson. Are jared anderson dolan to get minutes. I don't think i wouldn't be shocked. If jared anderson dolan goes back to ontario when those four guys rejoined the rossler. I not only won't be shocked. I expect it. I do but but who knows but lee anderson. I don't think. I don't think it's fair to him or the organization if he winds up in ontario right like if you can send him there. He came back from sweden. He's very excited. Second chances all that like you've got you have to find a way to get him into gays. I guess otherwise. Otherwise what'd you trade the pick for. Well yeah i mean it was an extra pick. They had a lot of picks. But yeah i mean. I think you you well. That's one of those gambles right. You had a lot of extra pick so there. There's a guy who say was a first round pick and you go. you know. it's worth the gamble but if it if it doesn't pan out like they can already tell i don't know if they can. The fact that is not on the opening lineup is sort of interesting. I think that's just unfair. Wrangling navy they want to figure out the other guys. I 'cause you know he's gonna be okay or but Yeah i don't know where fairness comes into anything. Just that's that's one of those things that you and i always disagree on whatever moon on our third question and this one could have the potential to be fascinating and it could be absolutely nothing and that is the kings have a ton of cap space and we'll have even more in years to come. So do they make any moves to sort of quote unquote weaponize that cap space. Do they take a flyer on a guy. Like peer luke dubois. Who signed a two year deal in columbus for like five million even though he could probably get way more on the open market. They do they package a bunch of picks and prospects to take on another teams expensive player. Right whether it's purely dubois on a budget deal. Do they try and price. Somebody out of tampa bay. They try and help vegas out. You know is there. You know a team like toronto. That has too many guys making too much money. And they just need to move somebody Can the kings play that role or do they just sort of look at it and go what..

"Promised then someone's feelings honor. I don't see by feel really in the mix for a couple of years. He's really young. He's a kid And we got carried away because he was picked second right but it it's really odd person that jumps in and he's he's young and he's not filled out and we you know why rush them so i don't see him for your do. I don't know about that that'll be more interesting. It's too bad he's hurt. Because i would've liked to seen what was going to go on because i think he would be if you joined the juniors just from watching that Gee i think you said he could take over lewis. And and i think that's really kind of maybe he could do and that would be fantastic. Yeah i was thinking like yeah. I don't know if it's specifically louis but my and again i'm not saying i see that as a ceiling. I'm just thinking worst case scenario. Well see that's funny. I don't see it as a ceiling. I think that every team has a player like that. And they're just as valuable as your first line center in terms of overall team concept. I know we don't pay them that way. And all that. But you know louis was a huge part of the cops right and you know and you look and see the overtime goals because he chased the guy down like in vancouver i. He chased the guy down and right. And you need to play like that and we don't really have won a wagner kinda does it But there's certain. I don't know so that'll be interesting. But i'm banking on this year. I'm really curious. I am to score the first goal of the season. Just because i feel like. I don't know i just. It's just totally illogical but i just feel like his story has power behind it an insane. Stay great this is the year i mean we've been waiting and waiting and and in a way it's kind of it's kind of good because we you know we didn't probably would've expected too much out of them. You know three years ago. And but i think now. He's apparently bigger stronger faster and ready. So i'm yeah. I'm looking forward to that. Leads us to our sixth question Taken right before Right before but a few spots before velocity in the same draft is leeann. Anderson as the question is who is louie anderson right like what are we. What are we get when we acquired him in the area. No idea on either but this but this is it right. This is the year to find out because he's got him a second draft the second round draft pick. And and if you so your point about trevor lewis you know. I look at that trade and i look at the top eleven draft picks from two thousand seventeen. And i go. Oh the kings have anderson and and vulgarity. Velarde fell because of the key questions about his health and anderson didn't work out in in new york's supposedly for you know whatever personality clashes are just right wasn't wasn't eddie was boss was didn't work out But if you can turn those two players into productive nhl players. I don't care what their roles are. All of a sudden two of the top eleven draft picks from from draft that at the time we looked back and it was like they. You know they didn't have a good system. They had no prospects kill. Clegg was the most highly touted prospect in the system and he was like a second round project defenseman. Yeah if you can turn that. And you get those guys annual. Give from that year. And i think anderson was that your and jared anderson..

"But you know the lardy should right by paper score a lot more points than lozad tense. You know should be able to make a lot of this. And so i think it's campaign that has to Start putting you know has to have more point. Production right i. I think he's great. I love them. But i you know to be on the second line. Then he's got his start but they've got to produce that's all if they don't then they're not making the playoffs. Yeah well so at the start of the season or it started training camp. I should say i was looking at the roster. And i was saying to myself okay. I don't think there's going to be a very clear fourth line. I think it's going to be the top line. And then just sort of a rotating cast the more. I look at it now with the opening night roster and i grant you. There's a couple of guys on. I are and there's a couple of guys on the taxi squad but now looking at more amodio enough as the quote unquote fourth line. You'd be like okay. that's your fourth line. that's the line. I expect to play less than ten minutes. And then kobe i follow and brown will get the bulk of the even strength minutes. And then you sort of the question now is which mcclellan even referenced this in a in a post practice availability because somebody asked about velocity is the second line and he sort of said while we don't know who the second line is it could be carter line and i. That's just one of the questions that we have to find out and obviously the lines will change people will roll. Yeah and some mobile goes matter. But one thing i am pretty certain of and that is that we're not a team that is has like this first line that is going to produce you know oodles and oodles of points. And then you have a second third line if they can. We don't have that team..

"They have six seven eight guys that they have to figure out that are and took out whether or not. I don't know what the plan is for turcott. But he might be in that list as well. And i just don't think they have room and dolan anderson right. I just don't i think it'd be crazy to those guys. Need to be figured out. They each need to get to play or or yes decides that they're not gonna play in there on the taxi squad and then back the h. L. whatever whatever happens. But that's what i would think way more important. I agree with you. And like i said especially early on in the season when you have like eight games against minnesota in the first twenty one if you go six two against minnesota you can make the playoffs great but if you go and eight well okay. That's it but you're right but you'd want to start out thinking i could fifty six games. We we can make the playoffs. Why would we. Why would we think. I mean i have seen a lot of comments on insider. You know where everyone's going looks like. They're taking but i mean i don't know why this is a team. I mean these are these are these are the best players we have so. I don't think they're trying to take. And i think people are underestimating. you know what a team is. So yeah yeah. That's what i think about that. So now we're going to dive into some sort of more specific aspects of the roster aren't are eight. Our number eight question is What will the left side of the defense. look like. Because it seems pretty clear they're going to play motto with doughty Although i still have some questions about that but whatever. That's the message for being given out so then after that we've got mcdermott. Clegg and bjorn foot. Mcdermott currently being held out unfit to play. I'm not. I don't think i'm supposed to say why I don't want to be clear. I don't know why but we've been instructed to avoid using language that implies the bag so i'll just say mcdermott is play. But you know as it stands now The roster is as i said. Mcdermott clegg bjorn foot. In mata on the left side but with walker and sorry. Mcdermott is not another. Sorry clegg anderson. Anderson's like modern anderson. Clegg and bjorn foot but once walker and mcdermott are are cleared for play again. Presumably mark all will be waived and sent to the rain. Yes that would make sense. And then either they're going to carry eight defensemen.

YouTube TV: drop all sports channels please

"We're here to talk pocketbook stuff today on talking tech that you've heard me say over the last few months how concerned I am with both the rising cost of cable and streaming youtube. Tv cost thirty five dollars monthly in twenty nineteen. Now it's fifty dollars monthly. The reason all those sports fees that. I don't WanNA participate in so I found it rather bittersweet this week when Youtube announced it was dumping some forty two regional teams from its network due to excess pricing demands from Sinclair Broadcast Group. Which owns the streaming rights to games from the New York Yankees in La Kings for example? Good Move Youtube. But where does this leave us? I got some ideas. I'm Jefferson Graham. And you're listening to talking Tech Youtube. Tv is one of a handful of cable. Tv alternatives aimed at streaming fans. Who want to pay less for fewer channels than cable. I'm a youtube subscriber and the last I look. I'm still paying fifty dollars monthly for the service which as good as it is is still drastically overpriced. I liked it. I get the broadcast networks and the news channels but there are so many channels. I will never watch from cozy and Smithsonian to TNT TBS and especially the sports channels. I don't know where they are. I've never turn them on. Don't kill me but there's some of us who just aren't interested in sports and happened. Feel strongly that they shouldn't have to pay for it if they don't watch that's why I like Filo td a streaming service aimed at non sports fans with sells for twenty dollars monthly. How do they do it? No sports fees. Well that's all well and good but there's no news channels either and I need that so scratch. Filo Youtube decision to stand firm against the rising costs of sports is a good one but because it didn't lower the monthly fee doesn't help me so. I have an idea. Get rid of all the sports all of it. Put It on a separate here for the fan. Who wants the programming? Let me subscribe to Youtube for what I want. I'll be happy and not subject to the endless contract battles which nine times out of ten seemed to involve sports fees. I know I'm dreaming here. But it's my dream and I'm entitled to

Detroit, Detroit Red Wings And Hockey discussed on 31 Thoughts: The Podcast

"If you hadn't won the Stanley Cup with the Detroit Red Wings. How would you look back on your career? I don't know. But certainly winning it capped it all you know. I mean you move on. This is something bigger in our life than just playing hockey. And even what we wanna do, you know? But I know now that you never know what it takes to win until you when you think you do every hockey player every athlete for our and I want to win and. In hockey such a team sport. You wanna play a win you want to be successful? But you wanna win and everyone of us play better when we wanna win. But you really don't know what it takes until you win. And I think that's for me. Even after my after career, I take those lessons. I learned in Detroit every single what does it take them? It takes everyone like when I was in Detroit. And I got in Detroit, I can give you a quick story LA kings versus Detroit. So the year before when LA we had a good team. We beat Detroit actually and silly things. This is one nutrition started being kind of people were talking about. And we chipped in to buy shakes guys doing protein shakes post game. So we went to management's look at while buying shakes you'd think at team would pay kind of just ask. And he said, no, we don't have a budget was. Okay. So all the guys were every month different veteran would vita shakes for the team. So the next year I go to Detroit, and I get to Detroit the nets about two weeks before cap, and we're skating and Turner comes to me, and he's got a no, Pat, and he says, you know, what's your workout with chain? And that's why I like to do this post game. I like to do this. He goes Cerny machine. Unia go down. What you if you remember Detroit a gyms, right? You got everything. And this is great any asked me do drink any protein, shake, I go. Yeah. He goes. We'll what brands on like, I don't know. I figured timeless call ES. You know, what flavor flavor vanilla draw brace? He writes down egos. I'll have it tomorrow. You're gonna have like my own brand, you know, like, you know, my own flair. He goes, don't worry. We want to help you. You're here to help us win a Cup and he walks away. So then the next day. I come in the little girl that worked for their foundation. Every team we sign autographs time journey year. Four five times, she says the same thing. Just really nice had little no pants. You know, we do autograph session. We do these things. And I think they were doing stuff at the time where you'd sign your steaks, and whatever they give you credit against the store. She says all the guys like sign them. We had the big signing. We do three years. She goes one you like to do it. I dunno known. I've make Joe non game this. We would never do that. But she says some guys would rather do them before breakfast after practice some guys don't want to do it the day before the game. I'm like, why don't care as whenever it's easier for you. If it's as long as it's known game, damn, okay? And if you give me a couple of days, I'll do it. I go, thanks. She was no problem. She goes which want to help you. She says we want to make your life as possible, you know. So you can help us win a Cup. She walks away. I'm like this whole thing of this entire organization was so ingrained on what their goal was an everybody works. And it was like these nice kind gesture, but it kept reminding you that that's what we all in it for. And then when you win you realize that it's not just a team is not just the players. Not just it's everyone, you know. And it takes everyone to be successful. And that's why you know, I think Detroit is had such success for so long because everybody was on board. It was it was really interesting for me to see and to live that.
