Police are saying shooting was captured on the restaurant security camera. They're reviewing that footage now and searching for a suspect that will safety investigators. Now, probing Monday's crash of a helicopter onto a roof of New York City. Skyscraper. I there is no indication at this time that this was an act of terror. And there is no ongoing threat to New York City based on all the information we have right now as mayor Bill de Blasios, who says it appears to be simply a tragic accident pilot, Tim McCormick died in the crash. He was alone in that helicopter chopper burst into flames. The top that building just blocks from New York's Times Square. The Justice department has agreed to turn over some of special counsel, Robert Muller's files to the House Judiciary committee, this halts the committee's criminal contempt proceedings against attorney general bar. But in the afternoon, congress is expected to approve a resolution to sue to compel the attorney general to release the complete unredacted Muller report, it civil contempt, meaning that they are going to court, they're going to sue to get them to comply with these subpoenas. Now, the reason this gets so confusing is because some people don't want to call it contempt, some do some Republicans don't want to call it contempt because they don't want to see that the attorney general would be held in contempt. So the investigation of the investigation begins now closer to home here in LA county new relatively new new ish. Sheriff Alex Villanova been causing some controversy mostly over his rehiring of certain deputies that were dismissed for alleged misconduct. And now the the controversy is starting to ripple out beyond the county. He's already in a legal battle with the county who are suing saying that he's not allowed to rehire these people, and he says that he is and before we get into how it's rippling outside of the county. This is a problem that you have with virtually every chief of police or sheriff they often fall into one of two categories skews me like let's talk about LAPD for a second. Darryl gates was known as a cops chief he supported his line officers. They loved him that came at the expense of his reputation with the police commission, and with community activists and people who were concerned that he supported the line officers too much and wasn't as interested in disciplining a bad police officers then you have flipping to somebody like Chief Willie Williams or Bernard park. Wchs. Where most of the of the line officers out there hated those guys because they were viewed as not being cops chief and overly concerned with discipline at cetera. So now, you have Alex Villanueva, and it seems like he is casting himself as a deputies chief. Because his big concern is that there were a lot of people fired under the previous sheriff Jim McDonnell, and that they shouldn't have been and that in fact, he said that three hundred of the four hundred and something terminations that happened with Madonna that three hundred of them were illegal unlawful improperly taken. So he seems to be in the corner of deputies who are accused of wrongdoing, at least to the extent that he wants to make sure every I and every thi is dotted and crossed before they're let go and he's willing to even buck the system to bring some of them back, and it's hard to know, whether what we have on our hands here in L A county is a sheriff who is willing to look the other way for his buddies for his political cronies, that's one characterization. Or we have a guy who's cleaning up a mess. That was inherently unfair to a whole bunch of deputies, and it's really hard to know right now, unless we have act who has time and access to go over every single case where a deputy was fired and try to figure out what's going on here. But it's definitely muddied the waters. That is for sure now, the LA county sheriff's office patrols, what are we carry about four thousand square miles, plus or minus it's pretty big, and it's the biggest jail system in this country that he overseas, but that's not all their forty two cities in L A county that don't have their own police departments. And what do you do if you're a small city, and you don't have your own you contract with the sheriff's office? That's what happens in cities all over the place Saint Thomas Carson, I think has a contract West Hollywood, of course, has one. And what's starting to happen is the mayor's in those cities some of them. Anyway are starting to get concerned because if sheriff Villanueva is rehiring deputies who were fired for misconduct. That could mean number one those exact deputies could do it again. And also does that mean he generally has a lax attitude towards deputy misconduct? And if you have that kind of an environment, you end up with more incidents, and you end up with more lawsuits, and you end up with more payouts. And a lot of these cities. Obviously, they pay the sheriff's department for their services, and they also pay into this pooled fund the contract, cities liability trust fund. And it's a four percent surcharge. It was a four percent surcharge back in two thousand ten that they would pay into this fund. Basically in case, they got sued and then money of these cities also carry extra insurance on top of that. So here's the concern the cost of covering their liabilities has already skyrocketed. I sit back in two thousand ten they paid the four percent surcharge. And now, they're paying a ten and a half percent, surcharge. And that's about to go up because in July. It's going to go up to eleven percent. You know, why they have to replenish the fund because the fund has dwindled with large jury verdicts and settlements over claims. We don't have data going right up till yesterday. But for the fiscal year, ending twenty fourteen these cities that contract with the sheriff's department paid eleven point one million dollars in lead occasion, litigation. Now, here's an interesting thing. Here's where it gets interesting because the mayors of some cities like the mayor of santee Mus Curtis Morris. He said yes mayors are very concerned with this sheriff about increase liability, and we're going to go bankrupt paying out claims if he doesn't. Basically make his deputies follow the rules. And if he allows kind of want and disregard for conduct, but you have other mayors who are saying, oh, I don't care about that. At all. The mayor up in Lancaster r Rex Parris have you ever seen that guy? You gotta you gotta Google him. Or some a r I s and look at that beard on that guy. It is impressive. He says we don't care about increased liability. What we care about is that the sheriff's department in our area that we pay for is understaffed and a lot of deputies are working overtime. And we that's our focus. We'd like him to hire back as many people as he can. Because the bottom line is they need more bodies. In fact up there. It's so bad, or at least they feel that it's so bad there. Even though they don't have a police department, and they haven't had one forever. I think they're starting a kind of quasi parallel police department. So that they can have city people deal with minor calls. So that the sheriffs are freed up to deal with the more serious matters. So right now, there's a lot of concern. But people can't even agree on what they're concerned about. All right. Let's get some news from Jennifer Jones Lee. And then when we come back, speaking of law enforcement and crime and all of that. Is there or is there not a connection between illegal immigrants and crime? There's now some research that maybe gets to the bottom of that question. We'll talk about we come back. Plus, it'll be your chance to win a thousand dollars. I looked up. I wrecks Paris. He looks like Kenny Rogers. Yes. Very much like Kenny Rogers beard is solid stuff. All right. So stick around and have a chance to win a thousand dollars very shortly. But first on KFI, Jennifer.
