"This is southern California's only twenty four hour, local news and traffic station. KNX ten seventy NewsRadio. Good morning. I'm Maytham Roberts. And here's loose dollars Griffith park on the northbound side of the five of Colorado boulevard and earlier brushfire as been stomped out by LA county fire department, there's still may be some crews on the scene. And that's a talent investigation going on. And they're diverting everybody off. The state beaches. And that's really the only way to get around this right now if you're coming down from the Santa Barbara area that's already building up right around muscle shoals, but just stick with the detours. Also, the southbound side of the thirty three that's being affected into Ventura. But that's just a part of the deal. But when you don't have a lot of options to take also in fountain valley, the four oh five is shut down in both directions between Warner and beach boulevard due to the bridge. "Six forty Sunday morning with Elizabeth good morning and welcome everybody, December thirtieth hard to believe. But in just two days it will be twenty nineteen year. And we thought we'd end the year with a show about a lot of love. And that means a lot of fire and no pun intended here. But we have with us L A county. Fire captain, Tony and Brenda who's their public information officer. Tony welcome to the show. You have to incredible firefighters that are going to also join us later in the show to talk about a miracle. The fact that your guys worked so hard to save so many lives and in so many homes, but we know it hasn't been easy. There's been a lot of criticism, and you captain have been at the forefront of trying to even coordinate. These press conferences with all the politicians. You know, everybody that show. Up for these things, but you did such an incredible job during the Wolsey fire. And we thought we really start with. Let's let's have folks understand the process because there's been a again a lot of complaints have been town hall meetings. Where people feel like there weren't enough firefighters, why did my home bird? Why did we do more? What is the process when you first see smoke? Well, first thing that happens early on in any fire, whether it be structural or wildland fire, we get the generally get phone call to our dispatch center, which is our what we car fire command and control facility down in east LA that phone call of a dispatcher will have an individual call up, and you know, report smoke showing or fire conditions somewhere. The first thing they do is assess from them exactly where the fires at. And once they get you know, a. And understanding of where the fiery is what type of fire whether it be structure or wildland. Dan dispatcher will immediately start initiative a response. So in the case of this fire. It comes in as a wildland fire. The immediately initiate a first alarm brush assignment. And that brush assignment is going to bring to bear a certain complement of equipment. Fire engines ground crews Air Resources, and they start rolling that response to the incident right away. And as they're doing that, they're also continuously keeping the caller on the phone and trying to get as much information as they can to better inform the companies that are responding. So that they can be in the best position to do the best work that they can. So it's a real collaboration. And there's a lot of coordinating that gets, you know, takes place. So when we heard about the Wolsey fire. We also know that there were there was a huge wildfire raging up door the paradise fire. Are you there? Okay. So you'll have to edit that. Let's pick up there again. So captain the paradise fire was happening when the Wolsey fire broke out. So we already had a lot of resources diverted basically cruise up north trying to help battle that plays at turned out to be just so awful so deadly. I mean, what is it? Like, I think the death toll is still rising. But it's the last I checked with something with either eighty five or one hundred. Yes. And you know, I'll tell you what the LA county fire department. We do have robust mutual aid agreements with neighboring agencies all state of California. But in the case of this particular incident, we actually had no resources dedicated to the fires of north ordinarily, we we might. But will we get into the late fire season? Mike, we are now in at the time the Wolsey struck our commanders are constantly trying to make determinations whether or not we can provide resources to our neighboring agencies in this particular case the fires that were occurring up north were in such close proximity to the fires that were occurring down here. We had no firefighting resources dedicated to the fires up north. We did have a few overhead personnel. And that would be fire commanders that were up there helping them out. But in all actuality, even if we wanted to send those resources we didn't have time because our needs started to become overwhelming very early. And both fires were going at the same. Time, but even had those resources requests come in. And they did we wouldn't be able to fill them because we we had fire weather conditions here, southern California that make the necessity to keep our resources here at home available. But you could take that question and also parlayed into another question in that would be during this time of the year in southern California as opposed to northern California, dairy, generally experiencing rain, and whether that is not supportive of wildland fire. So Cal fire. The overarching agency in the state of California will actually send resources for northern California down here in pre-position them for our Arias, but they were not able to send those resources to us because of what was going on up there. They're used to getting rain at this time of year, though, it all actuality we had all of the LA county resources in county. You're ready to go to work, but we didn't have as many Cal fire resources that we would normally have. Pre-positioned in this area. Because I think people understood it to be the case where you had resources up north. So how do you respond to those who are upset from the Wolsey fire that not enough wasn't done? There could have been more home saved had you had more cruiser. Well, you know, I think for most folks it's pretty difficult to understand the enormity of this event. And why we were taxed as a department so significantly because basically what you have is a high pressure Santana, Wendy that that occurred. The fire started with an enormous fuel badge in front of it. So it started up in northern for the county line Ventura County LA county wind up by the one eighteen in the seamy valley or actually it started inside the Ventura County operational area, we knew right away as an agency that where that fire started with the wind that was behind it that the fire was going to be moving to LA county, and we had so such high wind gusts, you know, route seventy five. Miles an hour. I personally was up at the command post tonight distinct blue, and we immediately started a wall, a large quantity of resources and put him in position in LA county, because we do the fire was coming our way LA city did the same thing and sort of Ventura County, and we all co located in a command post edit of inter county fire station up and see me, and we started to immediately work together. Which is something we do really well and started to bring resources into the operational area. Pre-position let me get them ready for the fire that we knew was coming. This fire was approximately fourteen miles wide when it hit the one on one freeway, the ember cast from the fire was extraordinarily. We're talking three to four miles out in front of the fire. Head there's burning debris flying out in front of the fire starting spot. Fires. So when you get a situation like that you had hundreds of square miles on fire all at one time. I got to corroborate something because I was out there the night to fire broke, I was at the borderline. Shooting a vigil at city hall in Thousand Oaks, and I gotta tell you it was blowing so hard. It was the gusts felt like seventy five mile per hour gusts, and there's just even if you had a fire truck, I think common sense, you know, just having covered fires too. You can own a fire truck and engine every home. And there's no way could saved all those homes because the wind was such was so powerful. There's there's no way we're out of time for the segment, but I I wanna thank you for coming on and explaining all this because I think it's important information is power. And that's how people understand the process. It's still very difficult to lose your home. I'm very sorry. I wouldn't want to happen to anybody. Not even my enemies. So I mean, we get that, you know, it's tough. But we will say that. There are incredible stories of firefighters doing going above and beyond the call of duty. And we've got a Pete Finnerty in Chris Isaak who are to LA county firefighters who did just that. And you're going to hear their story coming up here. So captain Antonio, Brenda. Thank you so much for your time. Please stay safe. Thank you for having me here. All right. We'll be right back. Thanks Sunday morning with Elizabeth Spinoza KFI AM six forty into the newsroom. "Structures and taken the lives of three people. The fires now ninety four percent contained after burning close to one hundred thousand acres. Authorities have begun allowing some residents back into Malibu but officials warn that broken power poles debris-filled roadways and broken gas. Still pose serious threats to stay in the area. Laura Rosenthal is a city council member of Malibu and she joins us now. Good to have you on the show. Thank you for having me. So what areas of Malibu have been reopened? All of Malibu to our city. Limits are northern city or western city limits. Have now been open to residents, and we are also letting workers and business people in two around the broad beach area now, and for those of us who haven't seen it, can you give us a sense? How extensive the damage is in in Malibu. What are you seeing? It's extremely traumatic. Very sad. There are streets. And they were hoods that have been totally devastated. We don't have a count. So I I don't want to give you a false number. But it's in the hundred there I'd been on a couple of streets where there's maybe four or five houses still standing maybe over forty gone on one St. and what are you hearing from residents who've already gotten back into the area will kind of experiences are they having well as you come Agean. There's different kinds of experiences. There's been a lot of earliest for those that come back to an intact house and a lot of trauma for those that come back next to people have known whether they're health is survived. You're not from the people. Stayed and people took pictures, but it's it can be pretty devastating for those to come back and see the bubble. Of their former home state sometimes been able to find little pieces of something that's survived. And then we have a number of home. It's naturally that were damaged. I was just driving around this morning. I've been driving around all week. But now that Moore neighborhood you've been opened up. I was out this morning talking with people saw a lot of trucks for companies that help people with smoke damage inside their homes and nanny many many utility trucks for southern California. Edison, the gas company all of the internet company cell phone service companies we have a lot of people out here there still a big sheriffs presence. They have been all over Malibu and extremely helpful. Los Angeles County sheriff's department and also still many many firefighters from LA county fire department. So a lot of work being done on infrastructure. But what kind of system is available to people who have been destroyed and what kind of housing options in the area. So there's kids. Things are to mention that are really important the first one is that on Saturday. We opened the disastrous systems center, and that's at our kind of a county courthouse. It's in the Civic Center area is right next to LA county library banality library. And that's being run by the county, and there's all different agencies there from the Red Cross to our building and safety department to our planning department to Medicare is there for people that lost their Medicare card. So people can look at the city of Malibu government official Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts as well as our city website at city dot org to get all of that information into we're sending a lot of people there female also has a trailer there, and then we have a number of organizations that are raising money I personally and sending people to the Malibu boys and girls clubs. They're very trusted presence in Malibu. They have a place at all of our schools in there have a fund that all of the money's going directly to. Malibu residents have been displaced. We also have many many teachers that live and work here that also lost their homes and workers. What about your story? Well, I I'm very blessed. We actually had sold our family home a couple of years ago and downsides and still in Malibu. I actually can see my old street where I used to live in that home is gone until memories and gets a coke for my children uncertainly to see the rubble of that. But my current home survived, and I feel very blessed to be in that situation. And I also am lucky that I've been able to be at service to the people in Malibu just trying to gather information, it's been very hard. We've been working with you know, the county organizations fire and sheriff really have been calling for the shock to them about win streets and neighborhood would be reopened and working hard to get that in. Mation out to our rent. And that's my next question. How long will it be before? All the evacuation orders are lifted. Well, they're pretty much almost all lifted right now except for some of our more impacted canyon areas, especially corral canyon and latterly. Go Kanye, and we had a lot of damage to power poles there, and they need to helicopter in a lot of those polls because it's very difficult terrain to reach. So and then we also on one of our roads. One of the canyon roads, we had a retaining wall fall down. That was keeping up some part of the road. So city crews and county crew some of those canyons part of them are in the city of Malibu part of them are in unincorporated LA county, so we've been working very closely together to get those areas open to all but pretty much everything else in the city right now.
