"Pandemic" Pet Adoption - Always Great No Matter When It Happens

"I was in a new apartment in a new city after just having broken up with a partner of ten years. I didn't leave my home. I had very little outside contact with anybody. Virtual or otherwise. I was all alone for the first time a very long time. I became even more introvert than i'd ever been before. Feeling sadness sorrow and kind of use on a daily basis. Let me just say that. I am inherently a cat person. But i was compelled to do everything the opposite way of. How about my life up until that point. The all quote. Nothing is working this way. So i'll do it the opposite and see what happens. It can't get much worse in quote. That was my line and my way of thinking at that time. We'll in october of two thousand eighteen. My precious cat when he had just passed away. It was very sad. And so i thought briefly about waiting on getting another pet altogether. Maybe i'll just wait. It was just so painful to imagine going through the worry and commitment. And plus i had just start to travel a little bit more but somehow i didn't dismiss it as the weeks went by. I saw an ad on pet finder dot com for a dog named frank and the ad it stayed that frank was quote body sensitive in quote in other words he was a biter. But guess what that did not deter me. As i read the ad i learnt that he had been in a few bad homes been rejected and returned to the shelter. But the ad also said that wants the bonding phase was established. He'd be a companion for life. I was intrigued as ended up. I wouldn't be all alone for the rest of my life. Like i thought i would. Happy ending for franken me for sure. But here's another pet story. That's just as cool on. Us news and world report. I found this doctor. Liz dare a family medicine. Physician in western massachusetts had wanted to adopt a dog but she hadn't quite found the right time to do it with work travel and other commitments. They're just never seemed to be a great time to adopt a pet and her two cats kept her company. Well enough with fewer knees dog. And isn't that the truth. But in mid-march the world changed when the coronavirus pandemic was declared overnight workplaces closed and like many other people. Liz began working from home. A lot offering visits with patients. Virtually from their homes. Having a dog would help stave off some of the isolation that accompanied the radical change and it is radical in lifestyle so many of us have had to cope with since the coronavirus pandemic began. She says i'm single. And i live by myself so it felt like a really right time for me. Well according to its july seventeenth twenty twenty covid nineteen impact report. The number of dogs and cat adoptions. Were actually down. Twenty seven percent when compared to the same time period a year ago. but foster's were up nine percent. Many states have seen a significant decline in the number of animals. Entering the shelters as volunteers observed stay at home orders but the increase and fosters suggests that more people are willing to take on sick or older pets that might otherwise not have found a safe home to call their own for any period of time because this is an ever changing situation and each shelter faces unique challenges adoption and fostering statistics will vary at any given time. It's so obvious. But there's no doubt that the response from community residents across the nation to support their local shelters by fostering vulnerable animals has been enormous and unprecedented. And isn't that the coolest thing well for liz. The rush to adopt meant. She had to be patient to find her pandemic pet orla name eventually. She connected with a shelter and connecticut right here where i am that brings dogs up from the southern united states. So that's how. She found sophie a two year. Old thirty pound terrier boxer mix. She's chestnut brown with white around her face and white paws and she's got spots running down her chest. She sounds adorable and she is and sweet and she's a very low key dog. I needed to find a dog. She says that was going to get along well with my two cats and as it turns out. Sophia's very good around the cats. Who are still a little freaked out by her. Well let me just tell. This story has a great ending to. She brought sophie home of month ago. They're still adjusting to the new routine. She's totally fallen in love with this dog. So after those two stories. My story about frank and liz's story about sophie. Do you even need to hear the bullet point benefits for adopting a pet. No well here. They are anyway well. They offer companionship. We know that this is important. If like myself you live alone before. I adopted frank who is a dachshund maltese mixed breed. I had no one to look forward to seeing no one to share my love with and no one that needed me and there is something to be said about the human to dog touch. That feels so good. Well provides a purpose to the sense of purpose. Everybody needs pet. Ownership is an important responsibility and one that can be a powerful antidote to depression and anxiety. There are more opportunities for exercise to well this time to walk. Frank during the lockdown played an important role in my wellbeing and his two dogs need to be walked and katz needs to be played with and there is no doubt that these activities with your pet is crucial to your physical wellbeing. as well. as there's getting dose of fresh air is important for both of you. Also it provides a reason to go outside smelled air and be alone with your thoughts. That's right. I said alone because when you're outside there's so much to see and you're using all your senses of very good thing and there's good medical news two that's right. Having a pet can reduce blood pressure the center for disease control and prevention the cdc reports that pet ownership can be a key to reducing stress cholesterol and triglycerides levels. All things that we need to do to be healthy and you know what there doesn't even have to be at pandemic for you to adopt a pet but you can't anyway. It's a good excuse if you need one. If you need a laugh live alone. Want to potentially meet other like-minded pet owners be more peaceful and happier and calmer. This is something to really consider. I know you know this. It's not only you but that furry pet that just may need you as much as you need them. Still a cat person. But i adore my frankie.

Biden to enter Oval Office with no confirmed Cabinet members

"Oval Office without a single member of his Cabinet confirmed by the Senate, and that is highly unusual. Today's hearings began for five of his choices. CBS is Nancy Cordes reports tonight from Capitol Hill. Do you solemnly swear to get? It's another sign of the changing of the Guard confirmation hearings today for one third of the Biden Cabinet who signaled a major break from the past four years? Climate change is a critical problem facing the country. When he comes to intelligence, there is simply no place for politics ever. Ali 100, New Yorkers nominated to lead Homeland Security said he'll immediately halt construction of President Trump's border wall. Would you tear down parts of the wall, would you Stop the construction that's going on. I have not looked at the question of what we do with respect to the wall that already has been built, and I look forward to studying that question. Understanding the costs and benefits. Of doing so. Secretary of State nominee Tony Blinken is a long time Biden foreign policy adviser. Would you tell the people in a caravan coming toward America? I would say, Do not do not come. Yeah, I think that's a good message. Former Federal Reserve chair Janet Yellen, tapped to lead Treasury argued the best remedy for a covert racked economy is more stimulus right now. With interest rates at historic lows. The smartest thing we can do is act big defense pick Lloyd Austin vowed to root out any extremism in the military. The job of the Department of Defense is to keep America safe from our enemies. We can't do that if some of those enemies lie within our own ranks. Democrats say their top priority is to get the homeland security nominee confirmed, especially after what we saw here at the Capitol two weeks ago. But today, Missouri Republican Josh Holy announced he would block a swift confirmation because he didn't like what New Yorkers had to say. About immigration, Nora.

Treasury Secretary nominee Janet Yellen calls for "big" action at Senate confirmation hearing

"President-elect joe biden is about to speak at a memorial honoring the more than four hundred thousand americans who have died from corona virus. We'll bring you the remarks. As soon as they begin in the meantime we wanna talk about his cabinet. The senate finance committee holding a confirmation hearing today for biden's treasury secretary pick janet yellen yellen urging lawmakers to support a biden's one point nine trillion dollar covert relief. Plan saying it is critically important to act now and not only ask now but act big because why not. Interest rates are at historic lows. The seems to make a lot of sense. Dan nathan but how about the debt. That was the big question. That was a big push back. I mean they didn't care about the debt in the last few years. I don't know why they would care now. I think if Mnuchin was still the treasury secretary yellen predecessor. I think he was on board for something that looked like two trillion for a lot of the same reasons. So i think you make the point now with interest rates here with interest rates net. Really going up anytime soon. And largely because of the fact they've tacked on four or five trillion dollars in debt in just the last few years. This is the time to do it. I agree go big

Yellen calls for "big" action at Senate confirmation hearing

"This is the first day of confirmation hearings in the Senate for President elect Joe Biden's key nominees to national security and economic post. Includes Janet Yellen as Treasury secretary. The former Fed chair tells the Senate Finance Committee that since interest rates are at historic lows, the smartest thing to do now is to act big on the next coronavirus relief package. Kind of still always agree, but I think there is a consensus now. Without further action. We risk a longer, more painful recession now and longer term scarring of the economy

I wear a lot of hats so with that. I had to stop recording outside the box. There was a lot of It was a tough decision. There is a lot going on at the time. And so i stopped using outside the box and i started working for signature. And i i become like essentially the face of signature lacrosse and a lot of fun with it and That's where i'm at now. We've just been doing this now for about eight months prior to quarantine but yeah. That's that's my lacrosse story. It's not as much playing as much as creating content. I mean i love playing. Don't get me wrong. Men's league i rip it up. Have at least three bucks a night but it's outside of that it's it's all content creation. I liked to have a good time with my favorite content is the chilin. Oh we clouds. What i wanna do we keep talking. No nobody knows dead. Air on a podcast. You're ready watch this. I had this. I had this come into mind. I'm gonna. I'm gonna take a chilling post. You guys let you guys let dead air happen there but we had. What if my mouth was open. Look stupid the you can't really see it. It's it's only it's an iphone. So they'll see us. Yeah perfect all right. So i i do my chilling posts every day and it really originated because one day alexis. My girlfriend who are in albany. New york and i might have been drunk I actually definitely was. And i was laying on the couch with my dog toss and so. I take a selfie with him. Just i'm gonna make like a mom post on twitter. I'm like just going to say chilling in albany smiley face and so that kind of like golly thirty likes or something like cares them. Chilling in albany. Then i was like. I'm just gonna start doing this every day. It's almost like i don't want to say it's like a troll elite type thing but it's like totally like just like facebook. Mom chilling with my dog. It's just like a time line that everybody's like that's nice. That's you know. And i love the ones where like crack adad joke and then i feel like a big in all capitals laughter it. Yeah as the stuff that cracks me up. My dad always does the thumbs up and for whatever reason the running then emoji. Yeah you have to love it and if you're not having fun with social media i think that's one of my biggest issues with like lacrosse twitter. We were just talking about it is that everyone takes way too serious. They on it. It's like if we can't introduce fun to like the social side of lacrosse. Then what's the use in trying to grow the game and like you know. Teach people about this awesome sport that we all love. Because i mean it's fun. It's the medicine game like it's not supposed to be the serious. Like everyone has a stick up their ass all the time type thing. So that's what. I like about lax twitter. Yeah yeah but they're all shiny shiny so our last question for today is what do you want your legacy to be like when it's all said and done really hard question I i definitely want to be remembered for some formalises as a great teammate. I think you know we're lucky to be a part of a team sport where you have a locker room. Full of thirty five plus people You know it's kind of a once in a lifetime experience where where you get to be on his team. So i definitely want want to be remembered as someone who who was a great teammate. Who you know. Were know a love. Like a undying love and passion for the game mckenna was contagious. That energy impassioned Into the locker room was contagious And i think. I think that's what's most important to me I'd say love my team in that. I would do anything for them. So i think i want to be remembered to get answer. Yeah most people just want to be remembered as being a good person and teammate. that's pretty common theme. We've found through there. Nobody's been like. I want them to build statues of me. We're just waiting on that person to see to see who it's gonna be well at flax twitter term. Yes all right. So do you have any Social media you would like to plug like your own instagram or twitter. Anything like that. Yes sure right extremes at charlotte north and then my twitter is at charlotte ocho eight. I think okay well so you wanna sure you give your answer instagram. My instagram is dot cr. "With a women's stick a couple of times and it's just kind of with factory strong one usually and it's for fun. So what our differences like. Do you guys load up nearly as much in the d. one game yes So i i would say when it comes to outside shooting. It's similar form for for women. Who kinda do load up from the outside ads. I'd say it doesn't happen very often as often as i would like just because it's a little bit more like a a danger and there's shoot through right So people aren't really kind of catching it loaded in stepping into an shot Where the form there would be some. Are we do have a which is kind of can be a place for if that's part of your your style to kinda take those shots usually do shoot my aiders off of the line As an outside shot instead of running it in but more often than not you know you don't you don't get a ton of those games so more often the night you are finding yourself getting inside and using restraint to chemistry inside shot So you know. i like to practice both. I think outside shooting is more fun. i i think. I love to watch men's lacrosse. So i love to learn that kind of kind of aspect of that game. So i go out and practice it a lot but you know. It doesn't come as often as it might an immense game for sure i would say the eight meter. That was definitely where where we're gonna happen. Yeah i'd say like whenever i go out and practice shooting i'm definitely always like cranking it like but i it's harder to like practice the finesse unless right in a game situation or out there with doing drills or something so like yeah totally. Yeah so the only live. Women's lacrosse. I have seen is is D three obviously watching. He's and at wesleyan and then High school so in the d..

"We have we got. We got special new gold uniforms at bc For home instead will we also have white but We we have gold now too. I think it's super cool. 'cause most home teams have their white colors but we have our additional gold uniforms which we were undefeated in last year. So i think those are pretty special Like those the best. I would say but we are. Maroons are looked critical. But at anna rights gone is pretty unique and special. Yeah that's cool. i. I only know of one other team that has gold or gold uniforms and that was the denver men's team it was more of a shiny gold but it was still pretty fresh. But yeah that's i. I always love talking about gear with players especially players who have gone to different universities. Because it's it's different at different places and like my first school made us turn in everything including shorts end of the season because they were just starting a program and then peace gave us everything because they were just starting a program and they had a big budget to start with so it was just completely different aspects but Anyway so we can move on to actually playing again and Do you string your own or do you have somebody six during for you. 'cause you like to string but do you have different preferences yes so. I actually don't stray on steaks. I it's kinda kinda weird thing for me. I don't wanna play with one eye strain even though i do like like the pockets Straying but I i have someone else during them for me but I do like to mess around string along the stakes for either. You know backups or for teammates or friends. Well if i send you a stick will you string it because i have a head. That's unstrung affect. Yeah well i find that. The states that string are pretty universal. I'm not going to claim to be like side. While i i can put pockets in different places but like the sticks. I pretty much just throw true and you learned to shoot with them. That's how i string a string. The throw shoe works and the other night Practice i ninety five and i was pretty excited about that. We brought out the raygun from my high school team and they wanted to see. Yeah it did. Oh yeh tucked it right below. The they're like coach. We want to see you versus coach austin because there's a kid there who plays club at unc and he can sing it to and we went ninety three and.

"It's a great example. It's so so much fun to watch his quick release on that quite due to so good so good so kind of transitioning. What kind of made you decide to transfer to be in like water. Some of the differences between the two programs. That you've noticed from your time at boston and yeah Well like i said i. I loved my time. At duke expands. There was nothing short of amazing I love to coaches. And i love my teammates in the campus. Academics obviously was was comparable. But i think towards the at the end of my sophomore year i just felt like it was maybe not the best fit for me and i was really Just inclined to kind of find a perfect fit for me And i think After talking it over with my club coaches here. That i you know like i said has really done so much for me in my career I just decided it would be to kind of explore other options so It was definitely a stressful time in wasn't an easy decision at all because of all migraine experiences that i did have at duke but in june of twenty december twenty nine teen is when i entered the transfer portal and the first call i got was actually acacia and And i i mean i just. I really did fall in love with the coaching staff. Right away and i also was lucky enough to visit shortly after that In the summer. And i love everything about it and i got to meet some of the team and Instantly felt like you know the perfect place for me And so i decided. I mean maybe the end of june And i've had a amazing experience are to i literally don't think i i can say anything bad about it because everything has been so amazing And you know the coaches. They're really really work. Hard to inspire us and light a fire under us in they really care about us off the field to in. it's it's been an incredible experience in our. Our team is so close. We're such a tight group of girls And so yeah. I had a great experience. I'm lucky enough to be able to be on that team. So we're based in north carolina and ghost apiece still and i live in raleigh still and What what what he. You miss the most about down here. I mean the that bojangles like what do you got going on. It's better than down here food for sure. I miss that. But i am from dallas out so i get a little bit of that when i come home. Of course. yeah you get in and out which we don't have here burger that's right you get. What a burger. The best place in texas cookouts up in boston favorite favorite places it's untouchable it's really good. They've raised the trae dollar which is blasphemy. But.

"Yeah leads to many more people. Playing know i mean 'cause now the p. l. l. pulled a lot of them l. players. Now there's a lot of vacancies. So guess what overnight it'd be. Yeah that's one hundred fifty guys never would've got a chance in the exactly so good flat and i think both leagues doing what they believe is best. And you know what the p. l. is is a shooting star in. You think were ryan is another team play like you know his growing bigger what they were saying two. I'm never not grateful if there's lacrosse on. I'm excited about it. Like i think we all are. We're all we love the game so we're going to watch it but it's just you know some people have their allegiances and some people are just like. Hey i'm happy no matter what. So it's okay. And i mean that's yeah that's how it is like you know the al and And what's the other one in baseball. You know like the nationally yes. So there's there's two leagues and you argue over. Which one's bad. But at the end of the day i it's just great for lacrosse that there's more of it. Yeah you can have that debate once in a while but like every day god. Espn give it a rest cool. I think because we gotta get you outta here for that reason that ravens kickoff. So we're going to move on to some segments here. Okay get off with. Who's your favorite offensive player of all time. Assume our going to switch to the defensive side who are your favorite defensive players of all time can be goalie to folksy all right. Well we have a kind of a weird one. Some people don't understand the question. I'll give it a bit of a preface. Well i'll just say it but the penalty box. What's your worst team. So like you know. Was donald saying what that means. What do you say that people are are just always like all right. That's just not right greg. Oh it's not fair. I yeah yeah i'm with you sir. That's fair.

"And i was like yeah of course and then their parents were like well. What if we do a lesson on the week. And then i listed price i like like you guys are my first people. And they're like. Oh that's way too much money and it was like well. I mean i kind of know what other people pay for lessons. I know what my sister paid for basketball lessons with people who don't have the skills that i have like. You know i mean. I feel like this is pretty fair. It's not one hundred and fifty dollars fifty dollars for an hour of my time. Plus the thirty five minutes driving there and back. I feel like i'm being fair. So you know. But that's definitely what the sport needs is more people to just step forwards and be selfless and so it's cool to hear the you guys do that especially with something like facing off because that can be a kid's ticket absolutely that can be a kid sticker. That's one thing that i love about this community like coming from an area. I'm from south. Carolina and lacrosse is not huge in south carolina. at all. and so like you know. We didn't have a club team in my area until i was like a sophomore year until i was like a sophomore in high school. And so like coming from an area where it's not that big in like being able to play in college have a platform where i can talk to cool. Asked people like greg beasts like. that's cool. Do enjoy yeah. It's it's it's kind of why we started this. We started it to give you guys a chance to show off your personality more. I mean you have that platform but other players especially like in college and stuff. They're still wearing the helmet and people only see from way. The camera point of view is so but switching gears. Is there your usa helmet behind you. So is that. Because i feel like if i got a chance to wear the country's name on my chest like that would be the top of the line thing i could ever do..

"So I'll read route reverend's it, and then like I'll say watch back on link is one of my main points in that. So now I gotTa Redo it. Outlined four times and the sons get sons going down I worked till five I, saw like the hardest adjustment has been like. Timing I'm getting a little more comfortable on camera but like. Streamlining the process has probably been the biggest hurdle And just figuring out that the flow that works for me. It's but it's it's a work in progress got a great by me. They're really supportive the guy is all videos nick. Bailey does some of the graphics is like he's incredible. Like every to me when I wash when I walked back as weekly watch, it feels like something nate made it doesn't really feel like something that I made in a good way like. It doesn't feel like Oh man this isn't me. It feels like Dang Nick like Nick didn't put his fingerprint on this. It would not be as cool as it could have been like he's he's that Dallas. Yeah I. Mean if you look at our our instagram page like sometimes I'll write a comment back to people or I'll reply to Em's for sometimes. But otherwise like unless I'm reaching out on a business side of thing, she handles the creative stuff because she's way better at computers than me. She she. That's such an old man way of saying and I know I'm twenty three. But still like she's way better at the computers and she and she she makes like the cool little videos with the with the picture and the title in everything I could never just. You'RE GONNA. Have a cool one coming up. Right. So we talked about the horn but I mean, it was a huge part of my lacrosse career. Yours anyone before what like why wasn't it? Like two, thousand fourteen. I don't remember the exact. Which one of those years but yeah. Yeah and like I mean that was right before. I graduated high school. So my last year of high school. It was fourteen was without the horn and I remember it being a weird change and rafts not knowing how to like start play again because they were Houston waiting. Twenty thirty seconds for people to get. Yeah. Ask does anyone. WanNa Horn and he's like, can I go? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That was was always the weirdest part of it but I mean I just I had to explain to her basically for the people that don't know what the Horn is any of our women's listeners you probably don't unless you had a brother in your at all his games like it is It was basically anyone on the field. Any coach anyone on the sidelines could just Yell Horn and then. And you had twenty seconds to sub on and off, and it was the most annoying but also like Cathartic sound because it was, I was just used to it..
