"Waymo and while he was at google he had a bit of a reputation for some ethically questionable leadership decisions he would leave google to found his own company that centered on auto animus trucking and uber would acquire that company not too long afterward bringing hausky on board with uber. Meanwhile back at google company representative suspected that levin taos ski had left google with thousands of documents related to trade secrets and that he was potentially using those to build out. Uber's own self. Driving initiatives. Google pursued legal action uber fired levin hausky because uber was legally required to defend levin discs due to the employee agreement he had signed and the uber then claimed that they were unaware of the theft and ultimately levin taos. Ski would stand trial for the theft of trade secrets. He was found guilty and sentenced to eighteen months. In trump part in lebanon hausky who never spent a day in prison because his sentence had been indefinitely delayed due to the covid outbreak. When something else. I always want to add when i'm talking about levin taos ski. He's also the founder of a religion that worships a future. A i in other words is a religion that anticipates the creation of artificial intelligence system advanced enough to be seen as a deity. And it's called way to the future anyway. I'm sure we have not heard the last of levin hausky this next story is an odd one because of all the irony in it in fact this episodes got quite a bit of irony we will not have an irony deficiency. Okay so let's see if i can get the straight. Google has placed one of its employees under investigation. That employee is margaret mitchell. Not the author of gone with the wind but rather a member of google's team that is dedicated to ethics in artificial intelligence now investigating an ethics specialist for wrongdoing. Certainly seems ironic. Though the cynical among us might point out that the various ethics committees in political circles. Are you know questionable and we might make snide comments about those as well but in this case things get even more. Thorny mitchell is suspected to be involved with the copying and sharing of thousands of internal files that were sent to external accounts axios ran a report stating that mitchell was using automated search functions to crawl through her messages and pull out any instances of communication involving the discriminatory treatment of another former. Google earth. tim. Nick gebru gebru had worked with the ai team before she was fired. Gebru has claimed that she was fired. After she criticized google's lack of diversity and general failure to address diversity problems properly something that google executives say. That's just not the case. That's not why we fired her. And so at least at first glance this appears to be a case where a google employee concerned about the firing of a fellow. Google employees began pulling evidence together to support the narrative that the fired employee was sacked in a discriminatory way and now. The company is investigating her for doing that. It's not exactly a good look for google on the surface though. Of course there could be a lot more going on here than what. I'm aware of google employees. Continue to pressure the company to make some big changes and the move to unionize is continuing as well. Is this another example of the company trying to lockdown descent or is there justification for the firing of gebru. I will continue to follow up on this story. Good news for netflix shareholders. The company announced this week that it had more than two hundred million subscribers worldwide and that it is bringing in enough revenue to cover the expenses of the original slate of films and tv series that it produces each year previously net. Netflix had to take out loans to cover those kind of costs which measures in the billions of dollars per year. The projections suggest. Netflix will break. Even by the end of twenty twenty one shareholders might have share buybacks to look forward to as the company has suggested it might use the cash on hand to purchase shares. The company also plans to maintain a significant amount of debt like between ten and fifteen billion dollars so in other words not using its profits to pay all that debt off. That is a heck of a credit card statement. The announcement jolted netflix's stock value which climbed more than twelve percent after the announcement. Meanwhile here in georgia some municipalities are suing net flicks along with hulu and a couple of other streaming services and this is an effort to lump streaming services into the same sort of category as cable. Tv something that is under more regulation than streaming services are the law in question. Is the georgia consumer choice for television. Act which places a requirement on video services and it's a franchise fee that all video services like cable. Tv are supposed to pay to local governments within georgia unless those services are part of a larger internet service bundle this seemed to create a pretty big disparity for example the nbc streaming service peacock plus could be bundled with parent company. Comcast's isp services. And thus escape the franchise fee that way. The same could happen with hbo max. An at and t.'s. Isp bundles but netflix flicks. Which isn't affiliated with an isp wouldn't have that opportunity and since the law only exempts the bundles from franchise fees. Netflix would have to pay up. Which would undoubtedly lead to higher subscription prices for viewers on the flip side the fees go to local governments and help fund various governmental functions and services but companies like netflix object to this understandably and they point out that streaming services are fundamentally different from cable tv services on multiple fronts. It's likely this will all have to be decided in court and the outcome is far from guaranteed as we've seen many times it's hard to predict how courts will interpret laws when the case also involves technology that the court might not fully understand speaking of mass of companies that generate tons of content. Let's talk about viacom. Cbs for a while now cbs. All access has been the go-to streaming source for stuff like new star trek properties. But soon that service will sunset and from the ashes of cbs. All access will rise the phoenix of paramount. plus now. this isn't super new news. We knew this was coming back in two thousand and twenty but now we know the date of paramount pluses launch march fourth. Here in the united states. That's also in latin america will get the service. Australia will get it sometime in. The middle of twenty twenty one and canada gets the name paramount plus on march fourth but won't actually get all the paramount content until some other time later in twenty twenty one and i have not yet seen a date for that so i'm sorry canadians. The news service will include. Not only all the cbs content that was previously on all access but also stuff from mtv comedy central vh one and b. e. t. among other channels there will be new original content coming out on the streaming service beyond. Just you know the star trek stuff. There's a series that will be based on the godfather for example and. That could be pretty interesting. I'm actually a pretty big fan of the first two godfather films and the series behind the music from h. One is going to make a comeback as well. I'm not certain how much the paramount plus service will cost yet. Cbs all access was five ninety nine per month. If you didn't mind having ads in your service or you can pay nine ninety nine for an ad free subscription per month but i assume paramount plus will probably be a little more expensive but there's no announced pricing schedule at the time of this recording. I s one of the big tech news stories toward the last few months of twenty twenty was how the co founder of the massive company alibaba. Jack ma went missing at least from the public eye. He gave a speech in october of twenty twenty that criticized government regulations just before an alibaba affiliate company called ant group was scheduled to have its initial public offering side note here. I'm pretty sure that in the past. I reported that it was alibaba. That was holding its. Ipo which was my mistake. That was incorrect. Alibaba had already had its ipo long before this was a financial affiliate company aunt group. Well shortly after this critical speech the chinese government specifically the regulators blocked that ipo for aunt group and regulators have really tightened the screws on the tech sector in china. In general and alibaba in particular. Jack ma disappeared from view and the rest of the world was left to speculate on what had happened to him. Was he laying low. After seeing how the regulators had reacted was he actively being held and silenced by the chinese government. All sorts of theories bounced around. Although i think there was more of an agreement that the exile was likely self-imposed as a matter of preservation. But then tian news. A government operated newspaper published an online piece that included a video of the billionaire giving a presentation to schoolteachers in a rural part of china. As part of a philanthropic event ma himself is a former teacher and has dedicated. Look great deal of time and money. Towards supporting educational efforts in china there was no acknowledgement. That maud been absent from the spotlight for months and considering the fact that the man has gained something of a reputation for some pretty flashy public displays. That in itself is pretty interesting. Alibaba which has already become a publicly traded company as i mentioned saw the value of its shares increased by nine percent on the stock exchanges in hong kong and shanghai. Clearly ma's absence has had a somewhat chilling effect on the tech sector in china. As for what happens next. I suspect we will continue to see companies push against the boundaries place around them by the chinese communist party which tends to try and suffocate any entity that rises to challenge its power in china private space industry companies space x has a couple of new purchases currently in the gulf of mexico. They are a pair of oil rigs enormous structures designed to conduct deepwater drilling and these two were rated for operations for a depth of eight thousand five hundred feet their dimensions measure to forty feet by two fifty five feet or about seventy three meters. By seventy six meters spacex his plan to convert these oil rigs into floating offshore space ports elon. Musk the ceo of space x had previously said the company planned to build that kind of a facility in the near future and the oil rigs appear to be the first step. They will take a lot of work to convert them into functional floating space ports but hey the hardest part of the job is already done because that's naming them all right. The names of the two ports are day most and foremost the moons of mars. It looks as though these rings will become part of a truly massive operation in texas that includes not just spacex facilities but also that other big company that musk is also involved with that being tesla texas has been a technological center for a while but in recent months there's been more of a move to migrate the big tech companies over to texas to take advantage of incentives in the like. I can't wait to see what these sports will look like. Once they are through with their makeovers wikipedia the crowd sourced compendium of human knowledge. Recently had its billionth at it. In the month of january you know for the english language of wikipedia. I should add because there are different versions of it. It was four and intrigue for an album released by experimental musician. Alec empire It's called death breathing. But now or at least as of the time when i was recording this episode that entry actually now automatically forwards to just alec empire. So you know. Yeah it was the billionth edit. But we're not going to be precious about it which i honestly actually find really refreshing because ultimately it's arbitrary number when you think about it but wikipedia i launched back in two thousand one and obviously has evolved a great deal since then there have been various battles between groups volunteers. Who edit the site. There have been changes in editorial policy partly to reverse the trend of people vandalizing entries or posting unverified and sometimes unverifiable passages into different pages particularly those that are part of emotionally charged debates like political parties or social movements and that kind of thing and because editors can update pages over time a lot of academic and professional organizations like my old employer. How stuff works had a blanket policy. That wikipedia was never to be used as a reference source. You could go to wikipedia to look at the list of references for that article and then followed down those pathways. But the wikipedia entries themselves were off limits mostly due to the fact that they could change in subtle or even not so subtle ways with no warning. So you might cite wikipedia as a source and then two weeks later. The information you were citing is no longer in that entry. That's not great. I've been pretty hard on wikipedia in the past. But i do recognize its usefulness. I just continued to suggest. People dig further than the wikipedia article when researching information so happy. Billionth edit wikipedia back in two thousand sixteen. A company called me we. E w e launched a new social networking platform also called me. We and the sales pitch for this platform is that unlike facebook me we does not have ads nor does it use an algorithm to determine which posts you will or won't see everything will up here in reverse chronological order on your feed with the most recent posts of those who follow at the top of the feed. And then descending by order from there you know the way stuff like twitter and facebook used to work. It also claims to be more focused on privacy since there are no ads. The service isn't monitoring your every action or to sell that data off to advertisers. Instead they have a subscription model there's a premium level that users can elect to subscribe to or they can use the free service. That has fewer bells and whistles. Now the reason. I'm bringing up me. We this week is that the site has seen a recent surge in folks signing up two point five million new accounts were made in the last week now by facebook standards that has nothing. Facebook has more than two and a half billion active users after all but considering that back in october twenty twenty me we had nine million users. A two and a half million surge in a week is really significant. And here's something that i wasn't planning on. I'm actually one of those two and a half million people. I somehow hadn't missed hearing about me. We've for years. And then i just came across it by chance before i did this episode before i saw the article about how many people had signed up in the last week. I just thought hey. This seems like it's more in my style than facebook is one friend on there right now. And it happens to be my co-host for large hadron collider. I quit facebook several weeks ago. And while i don't have access to my friends like i did on the old. Fb i do like the approach of me we. I just wish my friends were there. And apparently. I'm not the only person that's going through this. As more people have become disenchanted with the advertising strategies of various platforms or how algorithms can elevate misinformation campaigns and lead to radicalization. We may see more people abandoned those older platforms alternatives. Now don't get me wrong. They're going to be plenty of people sharing misinformation on me we as well but because there's no algorithm to serve that information up to new people you as a user have to go out and seek the people or organizations that are creating the misinformation on your own. You have to follow them. It's not being served up to you on a platter and that can make a huge difference as we've already seen with the recent drop in misinformation campaigns online anyway. This isn't a commercial for me. We its social platform. That most people aren't even using but it has received some recent attention. So i'm not saying it's going to become the next big thing but i do expect we're going to see a few social platforms try and position themselves as a more transparent and responsible alternative to the established networks. We have out there whether they gain any traction or not remains to be seen but we should remember that you know momentum in inertia are really powerful things back in twenty twenty. The company side craft c. y. c. r. a. f. t. published a report revealing that chinese hackers had been infiltrating high tech systems in a project that these cybersecurity field has called chi mira. They were largely attacking taiwanese tech companies at the time And this type of attack was classified as an ap or advanced persistent threat. Meaning the intrusions were meant to insert ways for the hackers to gain repeated access to systems and information. Not just you know inject malware or something but kind of continual espionage sort of thing more recently the nc group and fox. It revealed that does intrusions have been serious than earlier. Reports suggested and include a tax on airlines and affiliated companies presumably with the goal to scrape data from systems and keep track of persons of interest on behalf of the chinese government which sounds pretty terrifying right. The hackers were looking for. Pnr's that's ten. For passenger name records and according to security analysts the way the hackers gained entry into the systems typically relied upon earlier data breaches so some of those data breaches. Logging information was among the data. That was compromised. So the hackers were using those leaked log ins to try and gain access to various companies and systems and they branched out from there. They also relied on a penetration testing framework called cobalt strike. So in other words the hackers were relying upon a tool. That's usually used to train system administrators on how to detect and stop hacker intrusions hopefully with the publication of these reports the affected companies will be able to find and shutdown hacker access to their systems. Let's go with some more irony but we're going to stay on hackers so there's a cybersecurity firm called malware bytes. This company recently revealed it had discovered an intrusion from the same. Hackers infiltrated the company solar winds last year and once more this wasn't connected to the solar winds attack at least not directly. Now you might remember that was solar winds. Hackers injected malware into a product called orion and when solar winds pushed out updates for orion to all customers that were relying upon that product. The malware hitched a ride and infected thousands upon thousands of systems in companies government organizations etc with malware bytes. The intrusion came thanks to a dormant office three sixty five security app. Another irony right that the vulnerability came through a security app office. Three sixty five is a product from microsoft. Now we know that. Thanks to solar winds the hackers had gained access to many of microsoft's internal systems. And there's a chance that that may have led to the hackers finding the opportunity to take advantage of this otherwise unused office three sixty five tool over at malware bytes as for the solar winds hack analysts say were still in the very early stages of just assessing the scope of that attack and the number of systems that have been compromised. Which means we're still a long way from actually resolving any problems. Well we have a few more stories to cover before we get to that. Let's take another quick break. Every friday on the iheartradio app apple podcasts. Or wherever you get your podcasts on some online platforms there is a strategy called shadow banning. And here's how it works. You got yourself a real near dwell on your platform. They're always stirring up trouble causing strife initiating. Flame wars that kind of thing. Now you could just ban this person which would likely make your other users happy but it would also be something that the band user would immediately notice and may be that user just goes and creates a different account on your service and just keeps up with the same old garbage or maybe you shadow banned them. A shadow ban means that to the affected user. Things seem normal. They can still access the service they can still post to it. Only no one else on the service will actually see the stuff that this user posts the messages. Just don't show up because the user has been shadow banned a group of researchers wanted to test twitter's claim that they don't use shadow banning in their moderation strategies but some users messages were not showing up for other people and twitter reps. Were saying that those instances were just examples of a bug. It was an unintended glitch. But the researchers wanted to investigate that claim and through their analysis they arrived at the conclusion that it is statistically unlikely that the invisible posts are only due to glitches because the researchers found that the people who were affected by this shadow banned glitch. We're likely to have other friends who similarly had the same problem which suggests that rather than being random glitches. There is some sort of algorithm. That's identifying accounts that the algorithm has decided are posting material. That twitter would rather not show up on it service and the algorithm starts to follow the path of who is this person following an who's following this person using the logic of. Hey if this one account is posting really hinky stuff than i bet. The accounts that it follows the accounts that follow. It are likewise doing that so you wouldn't expect to see that kind of activity. If this were just a random glitch it would be very sporadic. They would be unconnected Accounts for the most part. So that's what the researchers are saying. It's not definitive proof. It's just evidence that supports that there might be some shadow. Banning actually going on twitter despite the company's protestations otherwise moving on so in video released its shield. Tv product way back in two thousand fifteen. Now this is a digital media player running on an android operating system and it can stream games from the pc to television. So if you're a pc gamer but you would love to play certain titles on your big screen television. You can use the nvidia shield tv to do that and now you can use. Ps five and xbox series x controllers with that system invidia added support for the new controllers to their product. The pairing process. Sounds like it's pretty simple and the nvidia shield. Tv product can also upscale videos up to four k resolution. That's not quite the same as fronting fourcade natively but it's still pretty darn nice now. I've never had the chance to play on and video shield. tv though. I did once get a chance to play. The original nvidia shield portable before. That was really an official thing. I think i was at a c. e. asked and it was just kind of being shown off and i was there in the last day of the show and the reps at the booth were like. Yeah sure go ahead and play with it I think it had largely been hands off for most of the show. Which tells you it pays a stick around at. Cas till the last day because people don't really care so much anymore for some reason sticking with games several game publishers including valve which these days is better known as the company behind the steam store are going to be coughing up some dough to pay fines in the eu. This comes after a nearly two year long. Legal battle and at the heart of this issue is the practice of geo blocking that is the practice of blocking access to some games in some areas of the e u while allowing access to those games in other. Eu countries see the eu doesn't like that too much. The philosophy of the eu is one in which people businesses and services are free to move around within the union as a whole so having a service that's available in say france but unavailable in germany is antithetical to the e. us law sophy. A competition law makes it illegal for companies to engage in cross-border sales across member nations in the e u. This isn't something unique to the video. Game industry on a similar note the eu wants services like streaming video companies to offer the same library of content across all members of the eu treating it as a digital single market and while there are complicated licensing agreements that come into play that. Make this harder to do. There's also the fact that within the eu a citizen can choose to relocate to another member nation of the eu. And in that case you would think that the person should still have access to whatever digital media. They had already purchased in their original country. The game publishers. All had a reduced fine due to the fact that they were more cooperative with the us approach to creating regulations of valve had to pay the whole fine because it had somewhat resisted those efforts and disagreed that they were guilty of violating law so valves fine amounted to one point. Six million euro a princely sum. Oh an hey remember when in early twenty twenty animal. Crossing new horizons swooped in to the rescue for all those nintendo switch owners and helped us through the early days of isolation in the quarantine era will how about you recapture that feeling of joy and community with a little makeup color. Pop is releasing a collection of makeup inspired by the popular game. Which as i understand. It mostly involves hoarding turnips. Until the market reaches critical mass whereupon you unload them in a frenzy sorta like the movie wall street but with cartoonish anthropomorphic animals. The collection launches on january twenty eighth and the images. I've seen have been pallets of of various makeup. Powders and different colors and each pallet is citing different citizen of the game as the source of inspiration. Which you know is pretty adorable. I'm in favor of and don't don't think i'll be wearing any of it. I can't pull off eye shadow. Guys and finally scientists with the university of bath and the university of oxford are now using images captured by satellites to look for and track. The movement of animals from space animals like elephants so the scientists say that the satellites offer up a new way to count elephants when paired with an algorithm that analyzes the images and looks for you know elephants shapes but like teeny tiny elephants shapes because these are satellite images. This is a much more efficient. Means of finding elephants than sending aircraft to just crisscrossed the skies in search of them and it gives scientists a way to track elephant populations. The african elephant is considered a vulnerable species. There are somewhere between forty thousand and fifty thousand african elephants in the wild and the team hopes that this approach can be used to count and keep track of other types of animals in the future with tweaks to the algorithm. Though i personally hope they never use it to count sheep because otherwise the satellites might go into sleep mode. Dad dad dad. Yeah okay with that. Terrible dad joke. Avon Rebrands Amid a Surge in Reps
"Month brought big changes to a beloved brand avon. I made a name for itself by offering housewives away to earn independent income by selling skin-care perfume and cosmetics from home but the iconic american company is no longer an independent corporation or based in america the household name cosmetics company is now to companies owned by two different international corporations south korean consumer products giant elgin household and health healthcare which bought avon's north american business and brazil's largest cosmetic company nature cosmetic os which bought the majority of the company in a deal that closed this month. Lg is also a significant investor in the net. Sure deal. it's another end of an era story which has been a familiar. Refrain of late for nearly a century and a half. Avon's presence has been a constant in the beauty sector. Now you'll say lights from the beginning. Avon was a trendsetter decades. Before american women had the right to vote avon founder. David h mcconnell gave them a chance to earn an independent living. Mcconnell was a traveling book salesman who offered perfume to his customers. As a perk. The perfume was so popular that he soon created his own product line in the late eighteen hundreds. He recruited women. He met during his book selling days. As the first quote avon ladies in the century that followed the company became a direct selling amazon with more than six million home-based representatives at its peak. But it's still a popular concept in many other countries and the new international focus means avon can better capitalize on hot markets like the uk where pandemic job losses led to a one hundred percent surge in new rep sign ups last year and of course avon will still be doing business in its country of origin. CES 2021: Gadgets for living in a pandemic
"And services. So it's no surprise that cove nineteen has influenced new products being unveiled at the cbs. Show this week. We both them. Interesting products in the pipeline. Yeah there was a lot of fascinating stuff. They're focused on the pandemic. Obviously the masks were the most interesting thing to me For a couple of different reasons You had one smart mask called the air pop that tied to an app and it had a sensor on the mask that could monitor your breathing patterns but then also have a sense of what the irs around you And so the app would signal if you need. Change the filter Also just sit just keeps track of kind of your breathing. Data which i thought was a very fascinating. You also had this very interesting mask. Phone which is basically take a mask and then take wireless earbuds and put them together. And that's kind of sort of what this is so you wear the mask and then it has the earbuds attached. There's also a volume control on the mass kind of around where your chin would be. We can control the volume or he can play music And then lg had this really fascinating. Wearable air purifier. Which looks like a very just hardcore mass. It's a lot of half to it but it's basically an air purifier. That you wear on your face. That's interesting yeah. I remember seeing that one wilder mask. I saw Which is a prototype. You know prod convey concept right now is comes from gaming company razor which you know may initially made like gaming pc gaming peripherals and then controllers and now makes pc's and all this other stuff. They came up with a smart mask. That's called project hazel and it actually has. It is clear plastic so people could see. Your face has lights inside so light your face if it's dark outside so people can see with your smiling or frowning or whatever it has a has an amplifier so your voice can be heard so it gets rid of the muffling stuff and then it also has lights on the side that i think it has sixteen more than sixteen billion nope sixteen million different colors which covers about every color. I would know anyway. I don't think. I need a billion but it could be like green and red and all kinds of shades. You know because is very into customization and color on their products so it looks like this mask thing is going to be here to stay for a long time and companies are making. You know cooler masks and more intense masks for people who are going to want that the only thing i worry about the razor masochism. Am i going to have to sell drivers on this or do i. Are there other related. Or i have to have with this mask. I hope not. Maybe they'll have built-in wifi. And i'll just do it when you know.

CES 2021: The World's Largest Tech Show Trades Las Vegas for Cyberspace
"Tomorrow kicks off the world's largest annual technology showcase, otherwise known as C yes or consumer electronic show, Wall Street Journal reports last year the show attracted about 170,000 attendees, and they interacted with 4500 exhibitors. But this year Is going to look different Organizer's move it from the Las Vegas Convention Center to a completely virtual experience in joining us with more on the KCBS Ring. Central News line is Wilson Rothman, personal technology editor at the Wall Street Journal. So you said in your latest article that you've been covering this for the past couple of decades. How strange is it going to be not to have that sort of hands on experience and play with all the toys? Well, it'll be really strange for the media because we're treated pretty well out there. As you can imagine. Then we wait to Disneyland. I've fired computer assisted sniper rifles like driven a blimp. I mean, it's crazy, and even for you know, the regular attendee that's pretty wild hands on show with robots everywhere you turn and a lot of spectacular views. Yes. So I mean, since you guys play with all that stuff, and then you sort of show it to us, and we think all this looks kind of cool because you're seeing somebody demonstrated on television. We're not really gonna have that interaction this year with you guys so Is that lose the old Wow factor, Or are you expecting some pretty cool things still to be on showcased. Well, we're expecting a lot of cool stuff. Obviously, the ex Samsung LG of some really wild TVs. LG hasn't transparent Oh led TV, Which could tell you more impact if you want to know, But the thing is we What will be harder for us to determine Really? What What legit If you know what I mean. We were looking. We tend to scan that whole horizon, looking for the things that will be covering the rest of the year when they become more of a reality. That's a lot harder to do when you can't grill people and asked them key questions or kind of, you know, Look, it's something from every different angle. So how is this going to work? Exactly then is they're just going to be video showcasing everything is sort of on a loop. Have there. No. There's there's gonna be some live components is gonna be anchors running the show live through a kind of Ah, you know, an online portal. Every exhibitor will have what they're calling a digital activation, which will be some of them will be a simple as videos. As you say on a loop. Others will be live interaction experiences. You know, there's gonna be a concert with Billy. I'll ish, for instance, and things like that, so they They are trying to keep that spirit and, yes, alive. Young GM Mark Mary Barra and Wal Mart. Doug McMillon are gonna do keynote speeches. I mean, it's It's still gonna have that grand jury in that sense, but Um again. It'll just be hard. I think it'll be harder just to poke around because you're used to walking these halls, seeing something out of the corner. I going. Oh, what is that? That really goes away this year. Okay, real quick. Let's run through a couple of things. Maybe the top two or three things, including that transparent television that you were talking about. How is that working? Well, old led technology is a really cool thing where they could do they kind of put, you know, picture right in the middle with without, you know, without interrupting the transparency of the side and stuff. It's wild stuff. And LG is the leader in that technology, So we're Definitely excited about that Samsung there. Arjun Emphasis is going to have 110 Inch Micro led TV, which is my favorite new technology because it's it's Caleb away. Every like 110 Inch TV is actually made up of like You know what a dozen or so smaller TVs that all kind of fit together like Lego brick? I'm very excited about that. There's an instant freezing machine. It's like a curing but for ice cream and margaritas, called the cold snap. I was very intrigued by that. There's a shower speaker that's powered by the water running through your shower, Which kind of put California's in a weird dilemma, Right? Are you saving energy and using water? Well, it sounds like there's gonna be like I just googled that transparent TV and the one I'm looking at. They're asking $20,000 for and I don't think I'd be able to focus on the picture because I'd be looking right through to the other side right now. So I'll be anxious to follow that when you guys were covering this and loved reading the article and glad you could spend a few minutes of giving us a preview of that to Wilson. That's Wilson Rothman. Personal technology editor for The Wall Street Journal. And again, the Consumer Electronics Show gets underway tomorrow.
EV Used Car Values Are Holding Up
"So the altium battery cells Gm and lg's the nine they've given it to the platform more than just the cells or the batteries that made into recently. They've been calling it. The ltm platform and that is going to be the foundation for all of their electric cars and thanks to a youtube channel by ray non navia. We can now check the construction process of that facility. That's going up in lewistown. Ohio a joint venture between gm and lg. Like i say according to inside hof the construction work is already done. The buildings are up the reeves on on. But you can see the buildings going up and surely there is so much still to do. But within several months they are on target to have that facility finish. There is an unhealthy obsession with watching tesla build factories and the busiest aspects of germany. Right now is probably drones above some way just outside of berlin or maybe texas facility asli. They're all the gigafactory is being built. Gm's with algae is coming along very nicely baking. It'll be out of the oven soon. And they company will install manufacturing equipment later this year. Production starts in two thousand nine hundred twenty two the spending two point three billion dollars on it. It's going to create one thousand one hundred new jobs in lordstown ohio and they're gonna make about thirty gigawatt hours annually of cells which is huge. It puts them just behind. Tesla's gigafactory in nevada. Funnily enough okay. Let's move on and on the podcast next. We're going to be talking about what's fascinating story next on the show an official look into battery safety and that's not to say that batteries are unsafe in any possible way but the american. Nhtsa nitsa is creating and a battery initiative for visas to coordinate looking at things like the research the investigations and the safety standards around battery safety. And that's a good thing because you know these are incredibly safe like the comic is themselves and the battery. Maker's is an amazing job with this. I feel so safe driving around. Evt's and you just think about because we've had cars combustion costs for hundred years. You don't think i'm driving. I'm putting my family and my baby inside a car which is carrying around litas. Some gallons of very high highly combustible liquid blows up. I mean when you look at the fire department and the fire brigade stats on cough. Is they've really coleman. And so when there's an incident of course it makes the news because they're so rat but normal 'cause burned down all the time. So i feel very safe driving a navy if you're drive already but it's really good news. The nhtsa has created an initiative to look at the kind of coordinated analysis of data investigations. When there's a crash an anon- crash event and look at diagnostics and even cybersecurity as well. That's all very important. According to the website Techno codex this initiative nitsa that it will conduct investigations into safety related defects in vs and be a central point on battery safety. That's very very important. Lots of people are doing this. But i think it will give consumers more confidence.
CES 2021 is going all virtual
"In twenty twenty one like. What trends or things are you looking forward to kind of seeing in this year show virtually trust which it's going to be the. There's there's pretty much no other way around it hub. I think for me would see as is how it's uncertain the tech itself. But how do we. How does the experience of us running into something new exciting. That we maybe didn't hear about happen. It's es when it's virtual because at the end of the day we have our spots right. We always know what we're looking for. You know we know sony. Algae we know Samsung they'll have announcements dopson. Tv's and different home. Things kind of stuff we knew tcl is going to have. Obviously something's going on Every company will have something to show for us. I'm hoping that the technology shown it's se as helps us understand and help us will do more at home. Because i feel like that was a big theme going into it. Oh yeah Seeing i started to see some some companies talk about that you know how they are the experience but also want to see better tech better p. c. tech to augment that experience. We need better cameras on our laptops. We need more connectivity options. more a better port connectivity. I o on on laptops and longer battery lives. The m one is great as an apple product but they typically don't show up to see us right windows amazon google. Those are the main companies that show up a cs. Apple is kind of like a you know they just do their own. So i'm looking forward to seeing how the how the new tech for twenty twenty one helps us do more at home and maybe unifies the experience of mobile and home life together. Yeah i'm into that I feel like 'cause. I what you just said actually resumes because the first thing that comes to mind when i think of. Cs is tv's So it's a big part that the lg booth come on that's like the number one. Everybody sees the lg booth which is basic samson. Of course samsung does it. Well beautifully as well But lg literally wall-to-wall. Tv's the wave of tv's it. It's like number one. Thank you go into south hall. It's the first thing you see on the right To me that those are the things. I miss You know but I also miss those little surprises that you get to see where you're not expecting.

Musk to Tesla employees: 'Our stock will immediately get crushed like a souffle under a sledgehammer!' if we don't control costs
"We also happen to have a leaked email from ulan. Musk to tussle employees today electric posted about this mid day today so i'll just read the email in full here. It's relatively short. Yulon says quote at a time like this when our stock is reaching new highs. It may seem as though spending carefully is not as important. This is definitely not true when looking at our actual profitability is very low at around one percent for the past year. Investors are giving us a lot of credit for future prophets. But if at any point they conclude that's not going to happen. Our stock will immediately get crushed like a souffle under a sledgehammer much more important in order to make our cars more affordable. We have to get smarter about how much we spent. This is a tough game of pennies requiring thousands of good ideas to improve part cost a factory process or simply the design while increasing quality and capabilities. A great idea would be one. That's as five dollars but the vast majority of fifty cents here or twenty cents there in order to make the electric revolution happen. We make electric cars stationary batteries and solar to go. Thanks great working with you as always alone and quiet. So i think the common first reaction when you email like this is oh tesla's struggling with profitability. Q four must be bat or something like that. I definitely don't think that's the case. I mean we have had price drops on the model seen some drops in china during the course of the quarter but for the most part i think tesla held steady. And we've actually even seen an increase in the price of full self driving and if that release goes wider tussle will be able to recognize a lot of that revenue this quarter and all those are before considering that we should easily see all time. High delivery numbers this quarter and last quarter tesla posted. Almost four percent prophet there. Gap net income was three hundred. Thirty one million dollars on to shove nine billion in revenue and even for the last twelve months tesla's gap net income margin has been percents even so i have no concerns about you for being profitable. They should clear that bar very easily. I think this can be taken very much face value. It's just gone saying hey. Don't get distracted by the stock price. That doesn't mean we have achieved victory yet overall were not extremely profitable. We still need to focus on cutting costs and bringing prices down for customers to me. It's as simple as that.
Musk predicts full autonomy from 2021
"All right so getting into the must interview. This was earlier today. Yulon was accepting the axel award the fifth person to win this award so we sat down for about a thirty minute. Chat or so with axel springer's see up overall. I thought it was a really good interview. I'll put the link in the show notes. A lot of stuff that we have heard before of course but some interesting new insights as well from you on. I think the biggest headline will probably be comments around. Autonomous driving axles springer. Ceo asked quote win. Is thomas driving really really going to happen. And quote and john said quote. I'm extremely confident of achieving full autonomy and releasing it to the tesla customer base next year. And so of course. We've heard comments like this from the past. And we also have this sort of convolution going on between full autonomy and tesla's full self-driving option as oftentimes ilan will talk with that as a frame of reference and talk about win. That option will be feature complete which is not necessarily full autonomy so the actual springer co did a great job here of clarifying that point saying level five relief full autonomy and eline replied. Yes yes and quote so just to clarify what that means that five is defined as the vehicle being incomplete control and it can handle all circumstances conditions that a human driver could reasonably handle so essentially full autonomy. If we step down the levels level four is basically the same except it is only in certain locations or in certain circumstances so you can think of something that is geo fenced or maybe only works during the daytime or when. It's not raining something like that. But if all those conditions are met it can be fully autonomous. It doesn't even need deva pedal or steering wheel and again. The vehicle has full control and responsibility stepping down to level three. This is the middle ground. Where under certain conditions within the drive the car may be able to take over but when those conditions are no longer the case. The car needs to alert the driver to be ready to take over with a reasonable warning period. So good example there is. Maybe it's highway only where you don't really need to pay attention. There's no nag but as your your exit. Maybe the cartels you. Hey and ten seconds you need to be ready to take over control so to go from level to where the driver is info control but has sort of assistance features to go to level. Three is really a big significant step and even with the full. Self-driving beta test tesla has not taken that step quite yet but of course. That's what they hope to be able to collect data four to be able to prove that eventually the system can go ahead and confidently have control needing that driver monitoring if that happens on some portions of the drive. Tesla ben is able to step up to level three. If tesla's confident that that can happen for all portions of some drives that step to four and if it can take over every drive all the time that's level five so ilan feel confident that they can eventually get to level. Five yuan here is saying that that will happen next year again. That would be quite a step up. From where tesla is today as for regulations allowing something like this. You llamas competent that at least some jurisdictions will allow that next year and from my limited research on this. I'm pretty sure many states already do think florida is a great example where fully autonomous vehicles are already permitted and ready to go where nothing would need to change in the regulations to allow a level five operation of course many other areas could be more strict and the regulation. And it'll sort of get phased in. I think over time if this is able to be achieved

Cyber Monday deals abound
"The clark deals crew has been working literally around the clock for a much longer period than historically. The clark deals team would work with most of the effort prior years being black friday week through cyber monday but this year not like prior years. The sales spread out the entire month of november bleeding into all the way into this. Friday is cyber monday for most retailers has become cyber week and it can be overwhelming. It's obviously overwhelming for our deals. Team can be overwhelming for you as a consumer with every E mail message. You get or text you might get from retailer you've done business with in the past or do currently screaming. How great their deals are so it really requires action not reaction on your part to plan out number one that you don't overspend and number two that you are getting real deals not non deals and so i know that if you are among the more than one third people somewhere roughly a little more than a third whom look at shopping during the month of december for christmas as more chore than joy. This is even harder for you to think through this way. But i'm more concerned about people who get really excited by deal deal and spend money. That is really more than your wallet is designed for and so that's why back to basics. I want you to think about coming up with a budget. Not too late even if you've already been clicking and buying black friday week and now in cyber week you're like oh look at this. Do you look at that one. Go ahead and assess what you've already spent and how that fits into what you really can't afford to spend through this. Christmas selling cycle second win. They're things you're interested in. Just take the time to write down the offers for example like Historically have been the top draws in the friday and now cyber week deals and they get really really confusing so no this the real deals come with. Tv's and various forms of electroncs that our current technology not state of the art. The very best doorbuster kind of deals are those that are off brands or More minor brands an example Sam's club has a hot item today where they're selling a seventy five inch. Tv four k whole bit from philips philips is not a premiere brand in the united states anymore and it's five hundred and ninety nine dollars. There was a cheaper roku. Tv seventy five inch with best. Buy for four nine thousand nine that when sold out five nine thousand nine for seventy five inch. tv really really great. But it's Yes you'd call that a second tier brand and then when you look at the first tier brands samsung. Lg sony the tv's. That are the best deals for black friday. Cyber monday in this week of cyber week our. Tv's that may be Last season's models or models that they had oversupply of or they made specifically as value additions for retailers. To sell this week and there are great. Great great deals especially when you step down to the second tier or third tier brands. Listen this when if you want a jain normal. Tv best buy has an eighty five inch imagine eighty five inch tv. A high sense. Four k nine hundred ninety nine dollars. I mean that's ridiculous and they have an l g eighty six inch for fourteen forty nine so there are a variety of really really great deals on. Tv's and for people looking at more reasonable sizes like looking from thirty two inch. Tv's that right now are seventy nine dollars and up Sixty five inch. Tv's cheap is two hundred fifty dollars and there are great. Great deals available and avoid with electronic spying state-of-the-art because today's state of the art is much more money than current technology and we'll be current six months from now or whatever at a fraction of the price that state of the art is right now

Iphone apple has the ability to spread pixie dust on any technology when they enter the arena with it. How important do you think five. G is to apple. And how important do you think. Apple is five g. It's great way to frame that question. Because i think it's five. G absolute needs apple to embrace this technology apple as you said has a way of turning nascent early. Technology things like payment like wireless charging into the must have feature of the year right. So everyone's anticipating. That apple is going to five g. That next big must have acknowledged. You never mind folks who think they have it already. They're they're apple is going to educate consumers on why they're gonna need this upgrade upgrade their phones as it's a huge deal And you know some statistics of said that if what's apple starts selling Automatically become the second largest iphone or five g vendor in the world behind. Wow way and keep in mind. Samsung has been doing this for about a year and a half. they've been selling five devices. The presence of apple getting to is so huge that almost automatically they become a major player in five. Jake do you think we have a problem out there. With the fact that five is arriving with a need for a new handset which isn't cheap and a need to ostensibly pay more for carriage widely by carrier a time when people are trending toward less expensive handsets. Like you just mentioned samsung. They have this new galaxy. S twenty f e fan edition. That is hundreds less than their previous flagship. New google devices have recently come out rather inexpensive. Lg you our favorite iphone. Right now i think is the iphone. Se if you read between the lines of seen at reviews and that is certainly not the flagship eleven pro. the markets tending toward more value priced. Phones is this an awkward time to ask folks to buy a new phone and pay more for service. That's certainly a difficult time to ask anyone. Spending one thousand dollars plus four new phone with that said there will be people who will spend that much money. Keep in mind. The phone is basically the most critical tool in your life. Right you this one thing. You basically can't let can't not let go of so either number of people that are willing to spend that much and we'll see what apple does in terms of pricing for last year with the the iphone eleven. They did actually bring the price down a little bit for the base model. There's rumors that it might go even lower this time so apple might serve. Take a cue from what's going on the world. An offer of a bit of a break but still have that five functionality.
How to stage a Zoom Thanksgiving
"Everyone jefferson graham. Here talking tech. If you're like me you're probably going to be doing a virtual thanksgiving Travel plans or a little odd right now during this kobe era. And we're gonna be spending even more time looking at a video screen instead of seeing people in person but that's okay. I'm here to make it a little easier for you in a talk about how to set up your tech what you'll need. Think about zoom. Think about laptops phones tablets. Think about tv. Think about a dedicated video display device. Which is my number one recommendation love or hate facebook but you can't get over the fact that the portal is hands down the best video calling device on the market and nowhere. Would it be more useful than the thanksgiving table. It's a dedicated unit. You do nothing but video chat on it and it's got the best camera it follows you around So that you could have like four people at the table as each person speaks to camera would then zoom in on that person. It's pretty amazing technology. The a portal. Get the small one. Get the eight inch. Cost one hundred and twenty nine dollars. I checked on the facebook website today. They have plenty of units. And if you order now you could have it by this weekend. The tenants version one hundred. Seventy nine dollars. The fifteen inch is two hundred and seventy nine in the great thing about the portal. It works with either facebook messenger or zoom which happens to be the world's most popular video meeting service. Google has its own video. Display unit called the nest hub. Max similar camera. It works with google meet which is not as popular as zoom and amazon's echo show can either connect other echo show devices or any phone or tablet with alexa app. So you guys could see your guests on their phones. Ba fine tablets. I think those are good. Nice big screens. Just make sure to get something to hold a tablet stand. Because you don't wanna put greasy hands all over that shiny ipad ditto for the smartphone. Same tablet stands should be able to hold your smartphone in place. If you don't wanna get the tablets stand. Get inexpensive table top tripod for twenty dollars or so. The laptop is probably what most people are going to be using Stick it at the head of the table and just sort of moving around as the dinner continues. Most important tip is to keep an eye level because usually the webcam is looking up your nose. Making your double chin. Looked like a quadruple chin. Put your device atop a bunch of books and remember to look at the camera not at the screen. You're you're making eye contact with the camera. Otherwise you're looking down. Hey what about using the tv. I've got a tip for you. They're apple has really cool feature called airplay. Which lets you beam images video and the like from iphones ipads and mac computers to other devices. If you can connect your apple tv setup box to your tv via airplay you can bring zoom to the really big screen. Additionally several tv manufacturers also have new sets that work with airplay as well including samsung. Lg sony video. Finally don't forget about the lighting if you're gonna go really dark and light candles. Nobody's going to be able to see so turn on the lights. Get out some extra lamps in have fun meeting online.

"It's not weird. I should say they try and help you out to get usage out of this phone by letting us sort of tag team to APPs at a time. one that I really liked to us was the one that I mentioned the Google TV, with Google on the bottom I tried the. Tried to do something silly I try to do android auto and Google maps at the same time just because they were showing off that driving mode. But will not let you. Do Two instances of maps at the same time which makes sense. But then again, this whole marketing situation, it just feels like such a very special. Use Case and for the most part like I would go inside APPs and I would just feel really frustrated that I couldn't use the second screen to at least type a little more comfortable not even an. Where I was hoping to like answer messages and I couldn't use LG keyboard do that. So it's a there's a Lotta quirks about it. That kind of negate the other things that has going for it like a IT Scott Uh snapdragon seven sixty, five Jeez. So this is a five G. capable phone as mentioned has really great cameras on the back. It's got these. Three lenses that work really well in tandem. But again, you can see how much how many fingerprints this is just from media ebeling at here on video I've heard it is thirsty for. Prince. Also. Is kind of a hefty phone it's kind of hefty to just use on its own. It makes it very hard to wield at one handed without being in that school mode I also found the software to be really limited in what I could customize between the swivel mode and the regular mode, and so it's like, why do I have this capability? If I I don't really have much control over it i. don't really have use for it and other third party apps so. This is just kind of something and think about what this particular device there is that pop up camera which talking about last week but because the phone wasn't on..

"Always great to see your name in the show. Are Right, and so we've got a couple of hardware blocks. This first one though is dedicated to the LG wing because it's just such a crazy interesting device. So let's jump into hardware. All right flow. What you got what am I good. I've got this thing the wing. Oh. My goodness. It's quite bright for the show right now. So I'm actually realizing that I'm probably GONNA have to turn down the brightness have. Have you taken off with the wing. Counts I have no status is that a Dad Joke Jason? We're talking about dad jokes earlier before the show and I was questioning whether Ron actually cracks them and when he does he proud of them I. Guess. So. They're going. Want to give you guys a closer look at the algae wing for those who are watching the video feed as you can see. Funky looking maybe you can see this there's just like this pattern on the back. But the screen itself. That's on the front. It feels. Kind of flimsy. I WANNA. Get a little bit more. but I I would love to switch cameras if you'll allow me so that I can give you a little more of a show Intel while I walk you through this ser- for those who shooting in this week last week flow on box the LG wing, and we're all very excited to see it because it is a phone that I have been hotly anticipating because it is a bananas design. and. So she boxed it and she's had a week to play with it and we're really looking forward to hearing what she thinks of it whether or not. The Bananas Design is functional in a way that we haven't realised yet, and LG is ahead of their time and this is the new future phones or is it a gimmick that will be that will be shut down in a year and a half or less than Somebody do my best to try and do a slight show Intel at least I will keep the camera on the phone while I tell you about this this very special phone..

"The whole package is five, ninety nine just for the phone itself, which has already kind of like. I was pulling my caller for those listening to the Audio and then the extra screen would be an extra hundred or so I'm sure they'll have a deal, a. t. and T. or something. It's a lot of money. It's a lot of. Also. Seeing that. The dual screen attachment is one, hundred, ninety nine dollars, or is it ninety nine dollars? Maybe one, hundred, nine. That's a dealbreaker. Yeah, there's no way. It's one, hundred, ninety, nine because it does not. Now Yeah Right. Is it worth two hundred dollars? It says taking like I'm looking on verge article in it saying it's one, hundred, ninety, nine dollars, but. Maybe. Maybe if you're buying this through a carrier, they might have deals to to get that price last. Two computer monitors for two hundred dollars more. So that's why I'm very like. Yeah. You know that's if yeah, if you want one of these with the dual screen and it's GonNa cost you eight hundred dollars. That's a you're thinking twice on APP. Interesting. For the for the device itself, three point five is what we came up with right and I think that's super fair. Think LG has onto something with this jewel screen situation, but I really feel like if they want to make any sort of moves in the android sphere, if they wanna be regarded the way, they were mere years ago, they really need to focus on that interface focus on buttoning down that camera hardware I. Think one of their biggest things was always to have that raw mode and the manual mode, and that is kind of awesome for people tinker with I. Feel like just focusing on that and making the dual screen a little more of A. Permanent part. Make it feel like more of a permanent part of the phone would kind of really helped down the line? So yeah. Yeah. There you go. I. Hope you've enjoyed our three view of the velvet. Who knows. Maybe we can do this for every single phone ever released ever. For it be fine because we never get to do this. Talk. If the manufacturers carriers want to send us those phones. I'm happy. Anyway listen I will give an open invitation to any manufacturer. I will review any phone you send me so..

"Like I was worried that it would be too then because I. Don't know if you guys have been Nokia Sirocco before. They came out of MDC two years ago. That phone is so sharp because of the way that it curves around like kind of hurts all. It's very difficult. You can have these as this one is like teetering on being too sharp, but it is actually like perfect. They the. Google assistant button from all the other LG phones, which is freaking awesome. I love dedicated hardware buttons. The display is a notch which kind of sucks I. Don't like that style of notch, but you can cover it up. They made a special dual screen for it. That is pretty much exactly. The same as the algebra sixties, it is white and it is. A little thinner because this phone is thinner. But these. Forty, three hundred million battery. In this and I. Really size of the battery for and. It's like that's worse capacity than this phone. It's the same capacity is the. May Thirty, pro or twenty? P P, thirty, pro forty, plus okay, that was. Special names for phones that makes it easier on the rest of. Their names. Yeah exactly. So the battery life is pretty much also exactly average and I. Honestly think it's just because Oh. Jeez skin is outdated. It's old like one funny thing is that. LG has always had this recurring notification. That just does not go away. That's an android system. Notification says do not remove the battery while your phone is unresponsive and it's always there, and it's been there like sense. The LG three and is still there I. See a rain. It's still it's still a valid warning. I mean it might be nearly impossible to remove the battery, but it's a warning, right? And you can't really you can't get rid of. It is just like why. How would not fix that, but? Anyway yeah, there you is like the same as it's been on like all phones, and they did clean it up like a little bit, but my problem with it is that like their icons look too childish in cartoony and they look like. Lime Green and bright yellow, and which is like cool, if you WANNA, go for that static, but I think it feels a little outdated. But having said they haven't had Jack No quad. But. They do have this three d sound engine thing that they added a couple LG phones ago, which basically uses a database to try to identify the type of music?.
34. Lets talk about save-a-dive kits and Healthways an original scuba equipment provider - burst 6
"Several months ago, I did a segment on voight. One of the original five scuba equipment manufacturers in the United States. As a reminder, those original five were decor. US, divers swim master Voi-, and health ways, and we know that void bought swim master in the early nineteen sixties. Today. I want to continue the discussion on these original five with a look at health ways. My research took me on some interesting twists and turns. A relay what I pieced together. But I'll caution. The things might not been. Things may have been a little bit different than what I present here. First. Let's talk about the founder of health ways. That was Richard Klein. Richard was born in one, thousand, nine, hundred, six in Maine. And he enlisted in the marine. Corps at the age of fourteen. Back then I guess you could get away with lying about your age. While he was in the Marines Richard studied calisthenics in bodybuilding. and. When he was discharged, he ended up in Atlantic city acting as a strong man. That's when he was discovered by a paramount pictures executive who brought him out west to the paramount studios where his job was to make. The movie stars Look Fit. While in his job, at Paramount Richard Started, a company called health ways. Hollywood and Nur tagline was America's way to health. The company had a wider range of fitness equipment and early nine thousand nine hundred fifties. They had water sports. Department that included things like Basques spear guns. And Fins and they called the Finns Webbie's. In one thousand, nine, hundred fifty four health ways obtain distribution rights to the LG. Declare regulator. If you WANNA learn more about LG Arpan. There's a great article in one of the old journal of diving histories by I'd liberal shelf. You can go and do some research on that. In one, thousand, nine, hundred, fifty, six, Richard Hired, Richard, E. Dick Anderson to establish a scuba equipment department. Diver Dick Anderson is interesting, Pioneer and scuba, and I'll probably have to do a podcast just on his accomplishments. They're pretty extensive. Diver. Dick also brings on Sam Lecoq to help him design house ways own regulator. They introduce their double hose regulator and name Scuba. I guess the copyrighted the name. Scuba I read somewhere that because of this copyright. US divers had to go with the term aqualung. The scuba regulator was produced between nineteen, Fifty, seven and nineteen fifty-nine. During this time both Dick Anderson and Sam la coke had left health ways. Sam Start at sports ways another manufacturer and produced a regulator that he called water lung. The water long. Caused some litigation with US divers because they were using the term aqualung. Don't know how that turned out. By one, thousand, nine, hundred, Fifty, eight Dick Anderson rejoined health ways, and he was the chief engineer of research. By nineteen sixty, the company was producing a new model called Scuba Deluxe. Health wise also developed scuba. Pack Harness. The Scuba Star Scuba air in something called the snark. Air SORTA like a snorkel with a pony bottle on it. By nine, hundred, sixty two. It looked like the company was developing a line for professionals called scuba pro. Well Richard Klein hired Bonin and Gustav Delay To head. Up this line. But. Unfortunately health ways went into bankruptcy on December nineteen, sixty two. And you'll find Dick Bonin and Gustav Della Vella Bought Scuba Pro for one dollar. And started what we now know today as scuba pro. But wait, there's more. And this is where things get a little hard to reconcile. Richard Klein unfortunately died in nineteen, sixty three. But health wage did not. According to Alec Pearce on one of these youtube videos, health ways continue to make regulators for scuba pro. I tried to find out more about the bankruptcy, and it took me to a document from the Small Business Investment Company Program from August one, thousand, nine, hundred, sixty three. Near as an entry that shows health ways of having sales of two point, nine million dollars with ninety six employees and a prophet of twenty, one thousand eight hundred dollars. It looks like they got some investment money and statement said they were on the road to profitability and operating in the black. Somewhere along the way health ways was acquired by elden industries in Los Angeles. From what I gather Eldin was a may have been a toy company, and it's really hard to find out information about them. In any event, the last thing I could trace was nineteen seventy-one Scuba Cadillac from health ways that showed it as being a subsidiary of elden. I also read along the way that they sold scuba equipment to sears Kmart nine, thousand, nine hundred seventy S. I wasn't able to actually nail down when health ended. So my journey to find out more about one of these original five US scuba manufacturers provided some fascinating twists and turns and Lake Oj all journeys I passed a few interesting side roads. Some I went down. And others yet to be explored. Hope. You enjoy this look at health ways.

"Hate about yourself girls? I just feel like as we get older. It's just harder to be confident confident. And now I understand. This is what I'm so I'm so bummed out about is like growing up in your early twenties. You think I'm never going to be one of those like weird older women like I'm not going to be weird and bitter and I'm not going to be s with like doc my my looks and aging and Blah Blah Blah because. I also didn't have a mom who was come to find out she was is. She was very conscientious about not being insecure in front of my sister and I which is a big thing. We'll get on that tangent later but like I didn't know that that's just what happens. You cannot avoid it. It's like death and taxes. If you're a woman you're also gonNA feel really shitty right about yourself and your thirty and when you start drooping everything changes and it is a real bummer. However I am happy to hear that all all these myths that women talk about because it's from quote babies? No women just didn't wait long enough to have the baby's your boobs Sag 'cause you you get older not because you have babies you're you get cellulite and you get softer. Not because the baby's up yourself not because babies women just never got to the point where they were thirty three without children. That's true all happens. Retro will physically. The thing that I'm the most insecure about is that I have of very rectangular body of never noticed that about you a rectangular box so like you know how you're supposed to be like our glass shoulders shoulders and then a waste and then out to the hips. My Body goes straight up and down and it does not Stanley. I'm flat Stanley shaped. Oh my God thanks for bringing it because not only because you throw. This is like a cart. It's literally straight up and down like yeah inches wide. Yeah but from the front because you all you have hips. I don't have enough snow. It's because she doesn't have like an hourglass figure. Like Yeah Alexa. I'm like it's my boob is the same size as my waist. Simpson's my hips. So when I'm in like a bikini from the front it's just I'm never and I even went to the trainer I was like how can I have like a little in debt. And they're like your body just made that way so like I'm just saying that better than knowing your body could be see that way. Never getting there right like I've tried everything. I'm not gonNA have a little baby waistline unless I Kim crash myself met gallon. That course it it's not going to have a uh-huh it does really bother me because I am a thin person and from the front no matter how thin I get. I'm always the same aim shape and then over the show anyway you. I think you do a good job for just for your body though like you have amazing legs and you're super thin and so oh you dress correctly for your body. I've started wearing a very wide belt like on a lot of my TV dresses. So it kind of gives me like the mention of a cinch but yeah I really hate that about myself if you've got a boob job if you would notice. I think I would look really good with a boob job. I've actually thought about it. I was anti boob job for so long. My mom had a boob job and then she was like you should get a boob job and I was like I would never And then like dancer for it for like an hour later life. No but did you get a new body. They like halfway through your life. Sounds amazing new face now. The boob jobs are so beautiful little. gummy Ler boobs. I hear I think there's I swear to God. They're called Bunny gummy bear. I don't think they're called gummy. But I don't think we'd go into the food. I don't like all right. You want the gummy bear. They feel like coming here. Why would I have made that up? I that your job anyway. I could get a BOOB job but I'M NOT A. You're insecure about your body. I'm insecure about my flatness of that. I'm very insecure about my Janke fake fake teeth. But I don't you just can't get a new veneer. The problem is I have been so traumatized that the thought of them pulling these out and putting a new beautiful set in is so traumatic traumatic. I've been through it like five times now and like I keep knocking them out. I'm like if they're in there and they're staying. I'm just GONNA move them. Okay okay by the way gummy maybe our boob job Israel thing is what is it. I don't know I can't like read through it now but excessive But the thing that you'd be surprised to hear that I'm insecure about personally is that I do. I do actually care when I can tell. People are mad at me or talking about me by my back for real yes like I know you guys don't care but I do. We don't talk about you behind your back. No no no. I know I wasn't saying it for you but like I'm like I don't care what anyone thinks I have learned to not care but like in it's actually not so much in business but like the other day I went in neighbor jail because I cut down a tree in my neighbor's. Where's your hard? That was on my yard falling onto my yard but it started in his yard and then he yelled at me and then like I couldn't not stop thinking about it for like two days straight and I felt so bad and I was like oh he thinks I'm a bad person like that really hurt my feelings feeling not what I would have expected. Yeah and I do like not like it when I can tell that people are like county. What a Dick you know? Yeah you know you don't I don't have to be addict. He then people won't call you a deck. They probably still will cause even like my good like when I'm like be careful Kelty you're still offending somebody somewhere. Yeah that 'cause I wanna be a nice person. You are a nice person. Would you WanNa hear what I'm insecure about. Yeah so I think I realize there's something about myself that's very important. I have a trigger and it's I like to think of myself as a reformed mean girl so like everybody comes to these live shows and they're like Becca. Oh my God. I'm BECA because I'm such a bitch and I'm so mean to people and I'm like I'm a mean girl and I'm like here's the thing thing if we go back in the hours and hours and hours of content of the lady gang usually. I'm just a bitch about myself. A bitch about like certain things or like types types of people but I never truly target anybody in particular and if I have a one on one interaction with someone ninety nine percent of the time. I'm really nice to them. And I wouldn't walk away and talk shit about them like that to me is a mean girl. Someone who talks shit or gossips. Or like I don't know just like Petty Ed Behavior so like Zach. The other day was telling me I was being a mean girl because I was screen. shotting an instagram of of someone that I don't know but my friend and I have this running joke about like specific types of content on instagram and when people do certain types of things we don't even know this person it's just an example of things we hate about instagram. So I'm not targeting. I don't know this person. I don't know anybody who knows this person right. I'm I'm not targeting her. It's very general. So is that like a mean girl thing to do. You're like a groupie mean girl like you hate particular groups yes but forever but you don't target an actual human no. That's also something that everybody does and men. I think. See it as being catty. However it's just something something that women do? Yeah and they're just talking to their friends like we love like shit talking in general. Yeah like that and look at like I. I agree that. It's it's different if you were specifically Targeting certain person I hate Jenny. Here's all the things that were like. Did you hear jetties husband's cheating on her like that. Don't come out of my boss. Stir the pot yeah. I don't like so for me. I'm very insecure. I get very insecure and I lose sleep over it if flake flake. People think that. I'm that person coming from that place so at live shows from now on girls. Please don't say you're BECA because you're a mean girl I feel Lake Celtics Way meaner than me. This and she wouldn't be wrong. Who I I'm obviously insecure about my looks. I have severe body face morpheus. This is nothing new. I won't get into that but I I. I have a little insecurity within the Lady Gang. Oh God because this really only came out when we're doing leading TV because when we do the podcast it's super casual. It's really low pressured but when we're putting a situation where we had to perform I'm not in the entertainment industry mystery. I am not competitive in nature with professional kind of stuff so me being put in a high pressure situation where I had to basically like put on an extended offended version of myself to try to impress a group of people that I don't know Dasell felt insecure. Because I'm not as outgoing as you when it comes to that so I always felt like lesser than innocence. Because it was very it was was like a fish out of water. I get that it was hard. That was a really hard hard experience. I'm super grateful for it but it was very challenging. Because you weren't alone in that you know what's so crazy. Is that every taping. I would would walk away and just be like I don't feel like my best self only got. I bawled my eyes out probably more than half the time. Yeah it was is not. That's not where I shined. I don't think yeah it's hard. It's like a really hard place to live. Because it's also you're being critiqued on who you Are versus if you go do something on. TV that scripted. And you're playing a character people your ugly face but they can't be like she's he's an ugly person on the inside but after late again. TV people definitely walked away being like. She's ugly on the inside. Well what are you thinking about what you. What size doffing? Here's no. It was really it was it was really hard. It was really hard because I know you would stay over at my house the night before and I could just see the dread in your face like it's really hard when you don't see yourself the way other people see you and so it's like that's that's what we need friends for in our lives chiefs like I think like more than husbands boyfriends are lovers or whatever but like it's just like when your friends find the courage to like stand up to you and tell you something like you guys can moron or like you are better than you think you are. You're prettier than you think you are. You like have to open your ears and like take that in. Because it's like that whole whole time I was like I just wish Jack could see herself the way that I see her. which is the ultimate control girl? Who So beautiful? WHO's like face? Looks Perfect on like you know what they mean. It's like you could not see that you had like blinders on for your own goodness. Yeah which is so crazy. That's what being under a microscope. Does very few people rise to that that occasion yeah most people crumble which is why people who live their lives in front of a camera are normally crazy king psychos. Yeah we've talked about a million times but it probably takes a certain level of crazy to be okay with thrive in that dot is a soul soul crushing experience console crushing soul-crushing. It really is. It can can be very. It's not what people think it is. You don't go to work and you don't go on set and have people fluff you up until you're amazing. You're basically fighting an.

"Is where we are headed eventually if it's going to be just another camera now that lg has a telephoto lens that maybe they will add zoom lens it still will answer some questions but i don't think that that is that is something which lg is looking for at the moment to be fair to every manufacturer all of them are using twenty seventeens hot buzzword of the year artificial intelligence to juice up this aspect of the phone maybe it's to get more services or to detect scenes on a camera like they're they're using it and they're i mean to the point of abusing it it's kind of insane how that has gone and no wondering when or where this will go to next but i'm you know i'm having a hard time trying to figure out what the actual differentiator is here in terms of how lg uses artificial intelligence one if they're there will come and there's no doubt about it there will come manufacturer there's just a question of who and when who managed to bridge the gap between eight and eight are i know it's another buzzword everybody's using it apple has been bracing for the best twelve months now but there's nothing meaningful nothing nothing useful at least to me and maybe to you it's another thing to show off but if somebody can manage to bridge gabbard wing a are ai and i o t in a way which enhances my life everyday beyond the fact that i'm pointing my camera towards my food on it says food or portrait something which is really really meaningful don't ask me what because if i knew i would be a billionaire now i think that that's that's going to be a win for the company and i think that i think personally that this is where lg might be headed with the three gummer set up on the back on the front is pretty clear l g a r a i t by the way this podcast is not sponsored by campbell's alphabet soup could you say hi to me for i know that you just hide to peter for a second i beat it because he says peter hayden i'm with anton on lg cameras more cameras knee make a nice product but we need value could this become like maybe the hcc one inmate which we all kind of feel like didn't really provide value that deal camera or do you worry that there is a potential for all of these additional cameras to remove focus away from key areas such as battery life because everyone's if you can't get the fundamentals of of frigging smartphone right then what right do you have of giving us of promoting of driving all this our indian mc shown to that as a you know actual advantages actual differentiator i i agree with peter and i will go even beyond what he said i think that we are rag now in a stage work in the industry regardless if you're talking samsung who alway sony htc union manufacturer and even beyond that apple we've reached a point where we're smartphones are more or less equally fast processors are fast enough even even last year's eight thirty five or eight forty s fast enough last year's x noses fast enough we have four six or even eight gigs.

"On our news on the father figure but i'm definitely rocking a dad bod'ed right there we go let's start off with the lg watch tying piece which is supposedly was the first lg watch that will be featuring where s last year we had a couple of edgewood wear and then we have the branding change so this apparently will be a model that will fit between the lg watch sport and lg watch style a lot of the same specs but just a better display by a little bit better ram and it will have the ability to be a hybrid smartwatch being that has mechanical mechanical watch face so you can keep time and then there's obviously the screen for the smart stuff now supposedly this was supposed to be released that was set for this week but apparently we will we just haven't seen anything about this so in regards to all that neck where do you think where is that at this point i think we're less is desperately lost which makes me really sad i'm i'm big fan of smart watches i i've used them for years i still have my pebble i just think google needs to have a clear picture as to what the development for this category is and where they wanna take it i i don't necessarily think we should need a pixel watch to kind of define that but if if everyone else seems lost along the way and doesn't know how to bring something new to the table and maybe at this point we should just give up like this doesn't even feel like a nexus kind of magic that yet l want congress has something to say with his nose oh no i'm just agreeing hearted i've been so cranky about wairoa s in the recent changes that i like notifications have gotten worse performances gotten worse i.

"I kind of agree but i kind of agree across the board with most manufacturers galaxy s nine feels like a refined galaxy s eight not like some fresh new aggressive take on what on how we should use our smartphones i think lg again battling from this underdog position is facing some of those same challenges how do you make noise how do you engage with the consumer how do you really get the point across it there's something interesting to offer here and i'll be really curious to see how that affects their advertising it more than anything else i think the the biggest complaint i still have facing lg products is rarely the product itself it's often how lg leads the discussion on what their phone has to offer so you're going to pick up this phone and it's gonna look kind like a samsung it's gonna look kinda like a wall way what makes it stand out what sets it apart and i'll be very curious to see if they can get ahead of that messaging rather than letting enthusiasts lead the discussion where they're going to i feel sort of do a disservice to what this phone might contribute you know like well it's kind of like this and it's kind of like that but i really haven't used it because i like my samsung and then that's going to be the review they contribute some sort of traditional advertising marketing campaign to all this they have very decent features in terms of just bringing on more sound more media into the more media emphasis on your screen is a big deal i'll be can they sum that up in in an ad you know like apple will go out there and make a commercial for the iphone on one feature something new water resistance comes to the iphone we get a killer commercial focused on just that and i i'm concerned and i'm doubtful that lg can carry part of that discussion because that's a delineating feature the headphone jack is going to be a delineating feature those things matter to consumers in their daily usage of the phone but are we going to see a bunch of feel good millennial aspirational commercials like on hint do because it's so passionate in your youth culture young and if that's what we see than lg is going to fail because they can't.

"Yeah an lg is obviously not in the same position as uh as a gpu manufacturer is where their only sawing appaled but yeah i mean anything like this has any more has vast implications for companies bottom line lg has had good days and bad days financial it'd be interesting to see what this does to their bottom line definitely so there are three iphone models with camera dole luntz there's the seven plus the eight plus and the iphone ten which goes on sale for preorder tomorrow midnight pacific time now and by the time he read this little actually today i know it will be tomorrow i'm sorry i'm lightweight than s as we record this as record this today's thursday you'll be listening to it friday and so that that the friday midnight time there you go yeah and we'll be talking more about that a little bit later on intrigued of various things dabble said about the preorder process and where you can get them exactly so there are also singlelens phone still for sale right there's the success the success plus the se the seven and the eight so it's some it's not clear yet which of those modest will eventually be phased out right i well i think apples going to have single camera models for some time to come i i i think that the dulan's cameras are going to leave for a free plus model or or a like in this case that the second iin model the iphone ten this year i'd be surprised if next year we didn't have a single andu lens model as well in now we we're going to have while you can expect the iphone eight for sale next year and you can expect the se to remain in for sale in some form argue even if the seven line seven and seven plus both completely go away the an and the six had success you still remained with the dual single singlelens in some form agree all right.
