US-China rivalry hinders a struggling HSBC

"We've seen fall out over the UK is World Way decision suspensions of extradition treaties on most recently. Hong Kong considering on election delay That could mean HSBC's business shift may prove untenable under its current structure being listed in the UK and Hong Kong while supporting China's national security law, expectations of more drastic action on earnings, they are increasing well for more on this. We're joined by Bloomberg Finance reporter Harry Wilson. Thank you so much for being with me, Harry. Look, first of all on H S B. C. It was unusual, wasn't it? That HSBC made the statement that it did about China's controversial A new law that effects Hong Kong. Why do you think they did that? I can only surmise they come on the enormous amount of pressure to say something on it. Normally, banks, particularly HSBC have like to remain entirely apolitical. Getting into politics just isn't in the DNA. And I think the fact that they felt they had to come out and say something publicly shows that probably not saying something will was seen as a school, too. So we certainly have picked up in the last couple of months that our thanks senior to perfectly are getting a little hum. I think a lot of cools a lot of Um ah, imploring from their Asian businesses to basically toe the line of it more when when it comes to Christo. Events in Hong Kong and China. Okay, so that on the security law on the flipside, of course, the pressure in response to that Was was also apply from the UK side. So it's kind of ratcheted up the political pressure you know, on in both parts of their business, surely Yes. So they are getting pressure from all sides. Not just something you came to. The U. S. Is also called him out over this and they're really in a very difficult position because effectively theory some game we'll have You say that since Beijing China onside Is seen in the West to UK us being, uh, essentially going against Western policy, so there isn't really a wind for them haters. In some positions, they can take the fetal sides happy so But trying to be trying to walk a line between them, which sees the increasingly difficult Do you think things matters are going to get worse? And how does it affect the business going forwards? It's a UK bank, but that makes most of its money in Asia. Well, exactly of you should go back with the ancient history of HSBC in the late eighties early nineties recognized this issue, which is why they part of reason why they decided first byway and size of Midland Bank and build up a business. Outside of Asia more than they had at the time, and that was, in part at least a recognition that the situation could become more difficult. Posi handover of Hong Kong in 1997 Now what we've seen since 1997 attempts become a global bank has hit some some brake blocks from headwinds off late, So now they find themselves in a situation where There probably is exposed to Asia optically Hong Kong as they have ever been on that places them in a very difficult position. Because see they want to continue doing business in Hong Kong that increasing against me that they got here to the lines of China, But of course that puts a man on a collision course with Earth. With the U K and the Y the West. So how do you think that this is going to be expressed then? Potentially in earnings? I don't think we're going to really see anything. Take Lee and the earnings on this Aziz yet we're really in the Very early stages off this spook growing political contest between between China and Hong Kong itself. These Already in a family, the procession and that that is really with us China trade tensions or the problems we've we've been talking about just now, that's more to do with Corona virus before about the political people. We saw lately in Hong Kong. I think they probably were looking more 5 10 years out. It could be the case that you start to see a kind of maybe death of 1000 cups and those who have so little losses here and there now see that that is very well aware of that on there going to be looking through everything they can to make sure that that happens. Things are they increasingly difficult environments in which to do business, particularly in a country like China. Where are you? Travel to Penang Malaysia

"Welcome to the amateur traveler. I'm your host Chris Christensen. Let's talk about paying. I'd like to welcome the show ruth from Vancouver and that's not the one in Canada but the one in Washington and that's the state of Washington. DC. WHO's come to talk to us about Penang? Malaysia Ruth Welcome to the show. Thank you. Glad to be here and some of you met ruth. If you traveled a with me to Morocco ruth was one of the people on that trip and we're friends from long before that and you have spent the last. Three years up until the coronavirus down in southeast. Asia's that have I got. The timing writer was longer than Well, we had three years in Singapore. And then we were into our just pass our first year in Penang when the covert virus and I actually was here in the states and got stranded here as the movement control order went into effect inning and I wasn't able to get back into the country. So we're now home back in the state of Washington and Yeah. But Penang was our home for about a year. Will, and when we get to the point where we can, why should someone go to Penang? Penang is just a very interesting piece of as. You have three distinct people ethnicities who make up panning opening is one of the thirteen states of Malaysia. It's the second smallest. It's the only one that has a island plus mainland components, and the island is the part that we are familiar with. That's where we lived. We lived in Penang Island Penang. Island. Has Like I say three different distinct groups. There's the Chinese, which are about fifty percent, which is more than the most of Malaysia, your Chinese percentage, and then you have forty percent Malay- and about nine percent of the Indians who are mostly Tamil speakers so there from southern. Yup and then we have the expert groups and in particular, there's one large group of experts that now reside in Penang as a result of Malaysia's M. M.. Two H. Program, which is Malaysia my second home. So quite a few people have actually retired they've made it their permanent home. So it's a very eclectic group of different ethnicities and different cultures and they do not intermixed very much. So you really do have these distinct. And distinct foods and distinct ways of living and languages, and you can do it all in a very small space and people have been to Singapore Penang. It's about the third of the size of Singapore. And only has about fifteen percent of the population of Singapore's on the island about seven hundred thousand people that makes it much more spread out. You're not just in these big crowds of people and yet you're experiencing the same kind of cultural mixing and interaction that you might get in Singapore. I like to think of Penang sort of like Singapore before Lee Kuan Yew came in and modernized and sanitized. Everything, so Penang gives you that old feel I think of what Singapore would have been like. Before everything was cleaned up and so and not to say that it's dangerous or unhealthy to be there but you just get that kind of older. Feel you have people cook it on the streets for food and things like that. So the I highly recommend going just because it's different than a lot of other places you might go in Asia will in terms of Malaysia we're on or just off of the mainland portion of Malaysia in the. West Coast in the north. So we on cow before we're south of that which is way up by the border with Thailand and then we`re Two thirds the distance from Kuala Lumpur up to the type border. Yes yes. Like you say we're to the west of the mainland and very close actually up. I think there's only one one state may be two that are above pinning on the mainland before you get to. Thailand. So it is still pretty close to time. There is some influence of Thai Culture Thai food. In. What is in Penang Yeah I? Think you're forty miles from Thailand. yes. Yeah and what's interesting about pinning to is, and we'll talk about this a little bit more but you came and visited us when we were in Singapore and we went to the parental museum to remember that in singer. So Penang is one of three places in that Malaysian Singaporean area that has Parana Akin Chinese or also called the Straits Chinese also called the bubble Nokia's so they are located in Penang Malacca and in. Singapore. So I've actually been to all three places. I've been to the museums in each of those places and it's a fascinating culture. People from that culture came from China from mainland. China many years ago. treaters remember correctly yet and they came in and adopted many of the Malay Practices and cultures, and some of the foods and sort of turn them into their own. They were usually very very wealthy and their homes were extravagant and their furniture was lavish and carved, and they also incorporated some of the colonialism of the British. So they had fancy dinner ware and fancy glasses and mirrors and their homes were just beautiful and in Penang you can go onto Church Street, which is down in Georgetown and there is a Paranthan Museum there for Twenty Ringgit. which is almost nothing that's four ringgit to a dollar. So it's five dollars you can go in and get a tour of the product museum there, and it's fascinating. It was owned actually by a gangster. A Chinese gangster and his family I and It's now part of the state I believe as a museum and they do try to preserve this product can culture because it is only really in these three distinct places.

"But. You talk about several things when it comes to shrinking a battlefield. First of all, it's creating niche. If we've talked about at at at length already and then creating that person combining, we've talked a little bit about we can exhibit combined existing niches that can make them more focused and define niche. You also talk about reframing a reposition, but the one element that I really loved that you do is opposition. When it comes to shrinking the battlefield. So. Talk to us about. Using opposition as a way to shrink our battle because I found this fascinating. Yeah and I love this example. I'm really pumped that you asked about that one because there's a bunch of a bunch of ways to create a niche or combining reframing all this stuff, and they're all there on the book, and that's awesome. But the one that's one of my favorites to talk about is doing the opposite, right. So how do you shrink the battlefield? If you'RE GONNA choose to focus on a certain group of people or a specialized segment of your market or something like that? Like how do you? How do you choose the right one? Well there's a great example from Jackie Chan Right Jackie. Chan. Is this martial arts you know really really famous and martial arts, but he is very different from everybody else like if you grew up a Bruce Lee fan like he did. Bruce Lee was the legend of the icon like he will never be surpassed. And how do you grow up as young martial artists? In China, how do you grow up Bruce Lee Shadow and expect to make anything of yourself in that community and in that that line of work? So Jackie Chan looked at that problem and instead of getting discouraged, he looked at it gwent. How can I do the opposite of what Bruce Lee does. Okay. Well, Bruce. Lee. Is Like A mazing. Super Fast, invincible. Well, what if I did the opposite and I was more vulnerable immuno even and showed myself getting her like did my own stunts and like showed showed the real thing happening Bruce Lee's films are pretty straightforward. Right What if we did something comedic? What if we did something that was almost slapstick? So he starts asking themselves these kind of questions. Just how can I do the opposite of the person who is the dominant name or the dominant brand in my space ends up coming up with his own blend in crates, his own genre. Basically of this kind of con- comedic martial arts. I don't even know what you'd necessarily call it But he invents his own fighting style that goes along with that expands into movies, ends up being like one of the highest paid actors of all time. One of the biggest stars in the world. And it all started by doing the opposite. And we can do the same thing right whether you are the florist whether you are a brick and mortar. Business owner whether your real estate agent whether you're coach consultant, which is the world that Iran and more taking what you know think about you know again, contrasting with Gary v like if you're in that space and you WANNA teach people how to market their business. Good luck. Just going on being another Gary v because you end up just being overshadowed by him and delivering the same message to the same people. got. Gary. V. So what are they? What are they need you for? But if you go out and you do the opposite, it gives you a chance to cut through with a message that actually speaks really really deeply to a smaller group of people and plus fun like figuring out how do the opposite you end up coming up with some really fun and interesting combinations. He may end up creating a niche that you dominate for the next thirty years. It's really

And, we were sitting behind home plate at Shea Stadium frankly sort halfway up, maybe third deck or something in. A foul ball team our way straight back. Identity shoved me out of the way in cod with one round. Tremendous amount it's been going. You know I'll never forget that I'm glad you remind me of that. That was fifty something years ago. An amazing that's A. Great Memory have first game. Yeah, well, it's better than getting in the head with a puck. But it would. No it was, it was a great memory. I had that ball forever I. Don't know what happened to it. In various moves over the years on the hockey side remember going to see the Rangers play in back. In the day we used to Go the old Madison Square Garden. This is the garden that was up on Tenth Avenue. I believe before they built the new garden in one, thousand, nine, hundred, seventy one. And the old guard, and had these pillars that you know. The new garden had the suspended ceiling. We made it so revolutionary. The Old Guard was Lee elda auditorium in at these pillars came down, and they sold seats literally behind the pillars that would call obstructed view seats. Added stamped on the ticket obstructed view. And you, literally sitting behind the pillar, and that's where me, the kid with always stupid behind the pillar. Every single time by Dan we get the tickets were like fifty cents. So that's what my earliest memories ago to raise your AIDS, I went to I can't remember which was first where there was a rams game at the coliseum that was my first, or whether it was dodger game. Experienced that I, remember was just the noise of so many people. And just it's unlike any other feeling I ever had were have dislike. Thousands of thousands of people around you at the same time, and there's something that I think is. Very lowering about that whether you are a sports fan as Lords player in your case of a photographer and talked to me about the intoxication of just that feeling at that sound. And, what it does for you especially when you're out there virtually in the center of it, it's still funny and bringing this up because the last. Or so this is gonNA sound really weird, but I've had this crazy ringing in my ear might. Equally right, it never experience, so go to the doctor. Get a hearing test the whole thing that they do. It comes back I have like twenty percent hearing loss at the high frequency, not unusual for my age. The audiologist says Mrs Wonder What kind of let me ask you. What kind of work do you do? I said well sports photographer you in noisy environments. She says I said. When's the last time we were in one? Four months ago. Well the ever experiences when you're in a loud arena or stadium I should not consciously. She's a will. Maybe you haven't withdrawal surgical. Rain you this consciously? Hearing it because it was so used to hearing it for forty years, isn't that? It's so bizarre.

"So. Yes, if you were to come over to my house I, would ask you to wash your hands during this this cove in nineteen situation and hopefully that will stick with you even after it's long gone because again, washing hands really does prevent a lot of colds, and so that is my tip for you I wish and hope that you're safe. You're well. You're not sick and that if you need to figure out how to make Santana sanitizer. That's how to do it now. You may be asking yourselves or me. Saint Lee why why? Why make your own sanitizer? So the reason I created my own version of hand. SANITIZER is because I cannot stand the consistency of the stuff that comes in the pump I just. Don't like it. It's squishy and. And so if I have to use it, here's what I do. Here's another tip so if you have to use the squishy pump hand sanitizer, put it in a Napkin. I and rub it into the Napkin like take two sides of the NAPKIN. Rub it into the Napkin and then wipe your hands off with it then it's not so squishy Nikki in my opinion. But again the best way is to actually just wash your hands and I could go on and on, but I think we've been inundated about corona virus, so I'll leave it there. I would like to share a shout out. That was given to me via house of Lee NYC Dot. com you can go there. Leave voice memo, and so I met up with dawn from I three bliss dot net, and so she left me a message. We met in the elevator. Actually she's got a creative intuition course at her website I, three bliss dot net, and again that is again is in letter I three the number, three bliss, or you can go to. The Bliss Dot Net, actually just go their intrinsic bliss dot net, and you'll meet dawn and to check her out anyway. Let's have a listen to what she has to say. Highly, this is dawn, so I was. Listening to your podcast and I thought it was really interesting that you thought that you said that I could go to your website and leave you a voice message, so this sounded pretty cool to me so I'm checking it out now and I'm leaving him a voice message I just really enjoyed listening to the episode where you talked about the book that you're reading. About basically embracing another you know I identity, or what have you on? That really resonated with me, so I'm glad I took that one, and you have such a nice radio, voice. So. Anyways, I hope you how to save travel back. Hope you have an awesome day. Thank you don for that..
