"Served on a committee, Michelle hunan's comic novel search is a delicious recipe laden must read. Narrator, Dana patoski, is a food writer living in California, whose roped into joining the search committee for the new minister of her Unitarian universalist church. Hunnam and dramatizes how one strong personality. In this case, a young woman swollen with insolence can control a committee. And her descriptions of conducting first round interviews over Zoom are hilarious. Here's Dana describing an interview with a female candidate that turns disastrous. Just before she signed off, she offered to sing us a song. Plucking a dulcimer off the wall, she started in on bridge over troubled water. She began to keep time by slapping the dulcimer, and somehow each slap was a sharp, direct crack to our eardrums at the end, she smiled, ecstatically, and waved. Group decisions are not something Harry Ingram worries about. He's the star of a new hard boiled mystery called one shot Harry by veteran crime writer Gary Phillips. The novel is set in LA in 1963 as racial tensions are escalating in advance of Martin Luther King's upcoming freedom rally at Wrigley Field. Harry is the best of all possible guides to this watershed moment. He's a black freelance news photographer who roams all over LA with his speed graphic camera. It's a job that gives him entree into neighborhoods and events that might otherwise be off limits to him because of his race. In the course of investigating a friend's suspicious death, Harry finds himself facing off with a white supremacist group who wants the speedometer of racial progress pushed way back down. What makes one shot Harry a standout is the cityscape of mid century LA. It's summons up. It's music, chromium cars, hateful slurs, invisible racial boundaries, and cautious hopes. The circumstances of this last recommendation are unusual, dick le pez, who wrote under the pen name Richard Stevenson, was a groundbreaking author of gay detective novels, featuring private eye, Donald strachey. Decades ago, I reviewed one of those straits he books, and dick and I became fast friends. He died in March, but one of the things he left behind was the first novel in what would have been a new series about a gay private eye in 1940s Philadelphia. Knock off the hat, may be the best novel dick ever wrote. Its main character, Clifford waterman, is a former police detective, dishonorably discharged from the army during World War II for an indecent act, cliff gets drawn into helping a man whose nabbed in a raid on a so called degenerates club. As with one shot Harry, the greatest pleasures here are the details that make 1940s Philly come alive..

Why Is the Upcoming Arizona Senate Race So Important?

"Again, it's still just a mixed bag right now as we come through Arizona in the cinema race. Why does this Senate race important? This is a Senate. This is a flip. This is one in which you use. It's a Democrat state that is a vulnerable Democrat seat. They can be used to flip off of this 50 50 majority of the Democrats given the fact that they have the vice presidency. And that is one that you're going to see a lot of money poured into Arizona to try and from the democratic perspective to keep Mark Kelly going. Now, on the, but the Republicans are working very hard to make this not. Happen. It's going to be interesting now that with the latest polling that came out showing rambut in the lead here with over Le Mans and masters, how this negative endorsement from Donald Trump will play. We'll just have to see, as that

Macron Moves Into Final Two of Presidential Race

"Macron managed to make it through to the final two against marine le pen in the French runoff. The result of Sunday's vote, according to the Financial Times, the le pen is closer than ever to winning power for the right in France, emulating the nationalist victories of Donald Trump in 2016 and Brexit in the UK 6 years ago. I don't know other than the fact that people just don't like Macron. All right, so that a poll of 1500 people show you had 52 to 48. Within the margin of air. And that would be stunning if le Patton, who began on the far right like her father in his move more towards the middle, previously supported Putin doesn't support Putin now. It would be a shock to the system if le pen wins, that that might shock Germany into consciousness as well.

No screening before sex change operation. If someone says she wants hormones or surgery, doctors, according to The New York Times, should have immediately break out the syringes and prep the operating room. Professor Les Standiford Tells Us About 'The Man Who Invented Christmas'

"And there is a new book out. The man who invented Christmas how Charles Dickens, a Christmas Carol, which everybody knows. Rescued his career and revived our holiday spirits. Mister Stanford is a professor in the creative writing program at Florida international university in Miami. Do I have it all correct? That's right. I'm the director of that program. I'm even more honored, sir. Thank you. Thank you for joining us. This is a fascinating story in and of itself. About how Charles Dickens is largely responsible for the way we celebrate Christmas in the west. Is that fair to say? I think it is. All thanks to a work of fiction. A little careless, he called it. Yeah. It's very rare that a one work has such an impact as a Christmas Carol has a hat on western society. Tell us here is what's so interesting. I guess a lot of people know this, but I also suspect a lot don't. What was Christmas in England and America prior to Dickens? Well, you might think that Dickens climbed on the Christmas bandwagon as a way of revitalizing his career, but the truth is, as you come to find out, Dickens built the wagon. There wasn't any Christmas to speak of at the time. He had been on the church calendar since the fourth century AD when it was created. And but it had fallen into disrepute from the middle of the 17th century when the Puritans took hold of parliament and declared the celebration

Gay man, black gay man, the black gay man because there aren't very many of us. What he didn't say is that he tipped off Jussie Smollett that the authorities were beginning to doubt his story. And that is when, Jussie Smollett refused to turn over his cell phone to the authorities. Because he was then becoming aware that they were beginning to doubt his story. He had been tipped off by Don lamon, for some reason. Don lemon has escaped the same kind of public, scrutiny, and a man that he be fired that his colleague Chris Cuomo faced. You want to know what the social media director of demic of for the Democrats in dupage county Illinois tweeted? It was probably just self defense, Mary le manski wrote. "Is always. Especially exciting when I have on Doug Giles, GI LES, he's a maniac, I consider that a compliment, a high compliment, my friend, Doug Giles, welcome. Eric how are you doing big dog? You are you're too much, and I say that in the good sense, meaning exactly the right amount. Behind you, I see a mounted Lion, which I believe you sent into glory with your own gun. Is that what happened? Yeah, I was fortunate to hunt this line back in 2015 right before doctor Palmer shot Cecil the lion and thank God, man, that I got it before the importation ban on lions from Africa. So this thing came to kill me. I know some of my enemies wish that it would have and we shot him nearly a point blank range with an old German double rifle in Eric. I'm telling you what that leaves memory burn. And when David said he killed a lion with his bare hands, I'm kind of thinking, you know what? I might call stair core Tori as the Latin would say, or as the Greeks, you know, hailing from your heritage. They might call that scuba lawn because I can't imagine trying to kill one of these big dog with bare hands. You have to have some kooky anointing of the Holy Spirit. I always assumed when David said that, that he was talking about with a sling. I just assumed that. It doesn't matter. Lions are scary and the line behind you. Now, when you say came to kill you, I mean, you were hunting lions. Is that correct? I mean, you weren't just like sleeping and stepping back in your own business and it came to kill you. And it was self defense, but close enough. Yeah, no, we were stalking him. We found a kudu that he had killed about three 30 in the morning. And you wanted to revenge because a friend of yours knew that kudu has a child? Exactly. His name was Bert, I think. And so we had to take revenge on him, but anyway, we found him about after tracking four or 5 miles, and he was tired of our stuff. And so he decided to see what these skinny white boys from America had to offer. And it was an incredible altercation. We got it on video. Pollution may actually stop some forests from growing. That's from a new study and this is from inside science. Just you wanna be in a new england woodland dominated by pinon pine and juniper trees researchers found far fewer tree seedlings in noisy sites than they did in quiet ones study raises questions not about the scientists about the future of the area quote if the noise stays there term. The noise also seem to affect the rest of the plant community different wildflower and shrub species dominating in loud versus quiet sites. The differences in plant growth were probably caused by changes in animal. Behaviour said the researcher for example noise might drive away. Pollinators such as bees bats and moths your bees your bats. You're in the case of opinion in jupiter juniper trees. The problem was likely a lack of animals. To disperse seeds. Opinions depend on scrub jays to carry the seeds away from the parent tree and scrub jays are known to avoid noise. It's possible foxes and other animals dispersed. "GET INTERESTED IN UBER. If you go back five years when the Uber was first coming to widespread recognition People that I knew in the transport so this is just the greatest company in the world and I looked into it and I discovered that the Uber Business Model only worked. If everything that all of us who've been in the transportation industry for the last century realized everything we believed is totally wrong. Everything Uber does is a one hundred eighty degree the opposite from the way every successful transportation company has managed and so I started digging into it and said Oh well maybe they've discovered some secret sauce. I I started digging into it and discovered that they hadn't now I think investors Keep being drawn to Uber The way investors were drawn in the early years to Amazon and that comparison is often made by UBER supporters Amazon lost money. A notoriously never showed a profit for many years as its head Spent every penny of income on expansion and growth. Is that what Uber's been doing. No ubers been trying to create the false impression going back ten years that it has. It's the same economics as Amazon and has the same growth and profit potential. None of that was ever true Amazon number no one started with a whole series of legitimate product and productivity breakthroughs. They really revolutionized is how warehouses and distribution worked. They develop major breakthroughs in ECOMMERCE. Now they weren't making quote unquote. Oh big prophets because they were ploughing money back into the business but they worship. They had a core business that was legitimate and generating strong positive cash. Cashflow Uber after ten years has never generated any positive cash flow but they keep telling we're going to become the Amazon of Transportation Russian and we've got years of spectacular growth They fundamentally don't have any of the Scale economies that a digitally based company. You like Amazon or Google do other example half they drive cars around cities. There are no scale economies. You I think at one point in one of your the articles you you based on that premise. Say That's why there's never been in one hundred hundred ten or one hundred twenty years. That taxi companies. I've been around in American cities. There's never been a move by anybody to Buy them all up in creating national taxi company there if you any city in the country country Denver Atlanta Boston. You name it. There was never any natural tendency for the taxis tool consolidate. Because you you know the one number there are certain industries where the number one company gets a huge advantage and just slowly drives the little ones out not true in taxes it never happened and there was is no case where okay where the successful taxi company in Denver. Let's expand in Minneapolis. Let's extend to Seattle and so forth. No there were. None of these economies is but uber went out and told everyone that magically overnight and we can't explain how we've turned the taxi industry which has been incredibly fragmented for one hundred years. We we turned it into the same kind of winner. Take all that you see with Google that you see with facebook and but the economics are never there now as I understand Eh. What Uber came up with that would be comparable supposedly to the revolutions in logistics. Aside from Amazon is an APP and within a couple of years of Uber's popularity becoming evident taxi companies that I'm aware of. I'm particularly aware of taxi. Companies in London which to me is the gold standard of taxis in among cities I'm familiar with. They began rolling out apps that were almost identical tubers APP. You could Halo Car VI- your phone and follow. It's progress to your house. Did Uber ever try to sue these people for patent infringement. No because they hadn't infringed any patents. This is simple. I don't know if you saw it. Larry Ellison of Oracle came out with a couple of months ago where he said Uber's APP was less less sophisticated than what his cat could have developed larryelder dot com pretty smart pretty smart. Well Okay but the the people in the early days when I started following this story a five six years ago. Oh but it's a neat APP while no you don't create one hundred injured billion dollar company because of a really nice user interface. The APP showed all of this service at much lower prices because of the massive subsidies nothing to the APP ever I live here in Phoenix and back then five six years ago one of the local competitors bought a software company. Put out an APP at the exact same functionality. But did you turn it on. and there were no caps available because they could only put cavs on the street that would cover where the revenue would cover the cost. People loved Uber's APPs because they didn't have to pay for it. It showed all this extra service and it showed at a ton of service on Saturday night when none of the other cab companies could afford to put anything out there so never had anything to do with the APP. So what are the what. What's Hoover's economics like like? Why can they afford to do that? Think of the Amazon business model and it. It kind of applies to a two google and facebook as well and each of those companies went and they actually based on as I said with Amazon real legitimate productivity advances there was a real business there and they turned it in to something that could a core business that could generate positive cash flow. Wasn't worth all that much but it was an honest to God business then then once you had a domination because of those digital scale effects where once you were facebook you'd you'd be a competing social network. Once you had control of the ECOMMERCE business. Everyone else was was small. Fry Right so they get this monopoly position or extremely powerful position and they can then use that all the stratospheric valuation lose previous UNICORNS had was because of exploiting in that kind of artificial market power once they had a viable profitable core business place that was based on you know the scale economies which meant they were immune from competition. Uber didn't have a core business us. It didn't have positive cash flow. It didn't have the kind of scale economies that would protect it from competition. It's simply the Uber's investors were not stupid could say they were evil and not acting in the interests of the rest of us in society but they said Oh we'll skip all that hard stuff like finding productivity advances or building a business. We'll put in thirteen billion dollars of cash and just simply bulldoze. Every competitor into bankruptcy Uber needed twenty three hundred times. He's more pre. IPO financing than Amazon did because Amazon had a legitimate business that could produce cash flow and and Uber. Didn't so the okay. It's just pure predatory competition. I'm going to bring a large enough bucket. A cash and blow companies that are actually Shouli more efficient and lower cost than I am at a business and known in the government's GonNa do anything about it and if any local government pipes up. We'll just use our lobbying power to destroy them overs- owners hope. Well if we become the dominant cab company and everyone in every major city around the world has to have our APP on their phone. Then you get to that kind of Amazon Facebook Facebook stratospheric valuation monopoly power in pricing power. They just they never got there because they didn't have a scale economies. But that was their strategy. All along the Culture Travis Kalanick's the growth growth at all costs this hyper competitive mono maniacal culture was an absolutely integral part of that and everyone on the Uber Board supported fully. Because if you don't have legitimate economics if no competitive advantage you have to behave. Save like the biggest bully in the world to drive competitors and get that kind of growth. If I understand you correctly uber was subsidizing every ride with that a big bucket of cash and that's why they could massively massively so they have not figured out a way to do ride hailing more efficiently. No not at and yet your ten in there still haven't figured it out in fact the only margin improvement that you know that total losses have kept going hang up billions right billiards again. They've lost twenty billion dollars in the last five years. You and I are old enough to know that a company that lost twenty billion in five years would have been dead and buried years ago They're still widely seen as wonderful and innovative and successful level. But no they have higher caution every category well and anyone who knows anything just sorta looks. I mean taxes are one of the simplest businesses in creation. It's very hard to explain healthcare to people. It's very hard to explain military because they're really complicated businesses. Taxis ABC's are easy to explain. There's a car there's a driver there's a few will and then there's sort of the corporate functions like dispatching in advertising. That's all huber hasn't done anything more. If they were more productive you would see uber. Vehicles driving around and with passengers a much higher percentage of the day than anyone else it's like airlines having higher load factors. They haven't done that airline load. What factors have gone up? phenomenally as you know in the last thirty years that was a productivity advanced. Were filling empty seats. Uber drivers are are no more productive than anyone else. It's it's If I if I understand correctly airline Load factors Used computer technology analogy to take The amount of demand and regulate supply more closely. So as to reduce sir. Empty seats. Is that right. There's a lot more with that but that's a very key part again. I've been in the industry my entire career. Career Uber's pricing is way less sophisticated than what airlines were. Doing in the mainframe era thirty years ago. Wow Uber was doing the opposite of what all of us in the transportation industry learned airlines. And you see this with hotels and cruise ships and certain other businesses have figured out how to do to variable pricing In a way that benefits both consumers and the Business Uber hasn't done that in other words it used to be that on Friday night when airlines charged the same fare on every flight while everyone wanted to go. Friday at five o'clock will now if we can get certain people to oh go Wednesday at eleven. Am and we charge more Friday at five o'clock you not only you increase the market because you can get all those additional people who didn't have to go Friday Friday and give them a killer fair and you need a lot fewer planes because you didn't have this peak demand at five o'clock and then have the planes sitting around burning empty capital for all the rest of the day Urban Transportation just happens to be fundamentally different than long-haul inter-city transportation and uber was up against the exact same problems that the long island railroad faces that the Chicago Transit thirty faces that expressways face..
