Coronavirus Impact on the Food Industry: Cameron Mitchell Restaurants CEO

"Joining us right now on the topic of small business and what he's seeing is Cameron Mitchell. He's the founder and CEO of Cameron Mitchell Restaurants, which owns nearly sixty establishments across the United States and Cameron. It's great to see you. It's been a while since we've spoken good morning break plagiary back with you today. So. The first time we talked to you was in the midst of the shutdown when all of your restaurants had been closed down and you laid out a plan for what you were hoping to see. Two weeks ago on March third, I was in Washington DC to meet with my bankers and I expressed them what a great start year we had were up seven percent same store sales record profitability for the first two months of the year. This was March third tomorrow I believe March Eighteenth we will be completely shut down I laid off forty, two hundred people on Monday. The last time we talked to you things we're looking pretty good business was was back and was booming. I think we're going to survive, but it's going to be a while before we get to the hospital we expect to be open in hopefully back to full employment by the end of June or into or end of July somewhere in that neighborhood. So what's happening right now? The best way equate it to is we're in a hurricane in the first. Landfall, the hurricane was back in March fifteenth and. It was is detrimental as it was terrible. It's was We end up getting the money and we're able to get out and get open and it was a lifeline. We would not be here today if it wasn't for the original P P P loan and June came and sales, we're doing pretty good. We're about seventy five percent of last year sales were feeling very optimistic and and when I came to realize is we are really just in the eye of the storm and then July the beginning July head and and the case counts rising. Across the country and met, metropolitan. Areas Rolling back opening guidelines and in further restrictions on our business and sales fell down to now fifty percent of last year and that is just not sustainable. So here we are today you know August second and I feel just as nervous about the future as I did back in the beginning of March when Corona virus was coming over the horizon. So we're looking for a second round of P P P to help us get through the other side and and help us sustain for the future so. And the thing that we're hearing mostly Congress is about the stimulus checks, the unemployment but there are thousands and thousands of businesses like ours out there in the country they're hurting terribly at fifty percent decline a forty percent decline sales we cannot survive. We're losing between five, hundred thousand and a million dollars a month, and we need the additional P P P dolorous in a in a terrible way and you know the the curb puzzle is for a two million dollar cap on that which. last time was ten million dollars and so for a company like ours and many others that reduction of eight million dollars just when we need it, the most is is very difficult for us. Camera now is the decline in your business coming mostly because states or local municipalities have have forced you to not open as much into close things down or much of the decline is coming from people who Are, afraid to go out what and how would you measure that a difference while it's both clearly when you have a reduction in capacity from use spell. Example Beverly Hills we were closed all restaurants California closed for indoor. New York City we were not allowed to open our whole restaurant that was just for the Patio Philadelphia. We're not allowed to open that was got rolled back from August I now to September first. So some of our businesses are not even open yet So but the main driver of that reduction of sales is the increase case cow corona virus around the country and people becoming more and more nervous about going to restaurants even though there's no science dates that that says inherently restaurants, Kobe case outbreaks, her Dr Been Driven by restaurants seating. Indoor and outdoor see. Cameron. What? What are you doing in terms of your relationship with your landlords? particularly in some of those places, the restaurants haven't even reopened yet. Are you getting any forgiveness or any easing of things from them? Well, that's the thing becky you know we had almost all of our landlords help out in some way or another not all but some or most they should say, but that money is just a simple deferral that's So we have an additional three, million dollars we got deferred in. April May and June but that money has to be paid back over various schedules over the next two years. That's just additional debt on the balance sheet, and we come out of this without P P p. one of the things cameras restaurants we built three or four restaurants a year, and if we're saddled with millions of dollars debt if and when we get out of this I don't see a building an aiding the economic rebound in the country in Twenty One and twenty two point further were saddled with all this debt. What have you heard from the the senators you've spoken with on this? I've spoken. Personally to both are centers in the state of Ohio and. They understand our plate and and but I, think they're. All. The negotiation right now over the six hundred, a week stimulus for unemployment benefits. So I don't think it's getting much attention that it needs right now and I hope by the time we get this bill and some sort of agreement between both parties on this bill that we can get this P P P round two stimulus, which has one hundred and ninety billion dollars earmarked for it, which should be more than enough for these companies passed the stress test that show they actually needed. To keep with the original PCP levels P P one camera I want to thank you for the update We we have to check in with you again soon, but we appreciate your time and wish you good

Criminals are cast original. This is the twenty fifth episode in our March Madness. Special this month were counting down the top thirty one sports scandals from Nineteen Ninety to two thousand twenty on Carter Roy. And I'm Tim Johnson in today's episode. We're going back to two thousand fourteen and the downfall of the La Clippers racist owner Donald Sterling. Although he made a lot of money from owning the clippers. Donald Sterling made the bulk of his fortune in real estate as a landlord. He was the subject of numerous lawsuits accusing him of housing discrimination against minorities during these proceedings. Sterling's racist nature was laid bare. He told employees that black tenants smell. And Attract Vermin Hispanics. Just smoke drink and hang around the building in Koreans will pay the rent and live in whatever conditions I give them. The married father of three was also sued on multiple occasions for sexual harassment. But with the help of a high priced and highly effective legal team. He managed to emerge relatively unscathed however after not. Enzi released the recording his phone. Call with these veon. On April twenty fifth two thousand fourteen. No lawyer on earth COULD HELP HIM UPSET THAT STEVE. Yano had posted an instagram photo of her and Magic Johnson. Sterling told her. It bothers me a lot that you want to broadcast that you're associating with black people. Don't put him on instagram. And don't bring him to my games. Unbeknownst TO HIM STILL. Yano had recorded the entire conversation. The recording confirmed what most people around the League already knew. Donald Sterling was racist scumbag however he had never faced disciplined from the NBA before. But now that is true. Nature was caught on tape that was about to change with NBA players contemplating boycotting playoff games to protest. Sterling's ownership commissioner. Adam silver had to act on April twenty ninth. He Finds Sterling two point five million dollars the maximum amount allowed silver also banned him from the NBA for life and a few weeks later. More than three quarters of NBA team owners voted to force sterling to sell his franchise. The decision was a long time coming. From man who heckled his own players was named the worst owner in sports by the New York Times and Forbes magazine and whose team had amassed the lowest winning percentage in all four major American Sports Leagues Between Nineteen Eighty one in two thousand fourteen sterling. His lawyers tried to fight both decisions in court but they were rebuffed at every turn. Despite numerous countersuits and objections sterling was forced to sell the team to Microsoft. Co-founder Steve Balmer. Since Sterling's departure the basketball world has done. Its best to erase his racist legacy under bombers leadership. The clippers have gone on to become one of the best run franchises in the NBA. Ahead of the twenty twenty

"In the afternoon at the LA clippers serious about this organization after seeing them on Instagram and you can think of it like it Ted talk but focused on failure right okay Sacramento is now home to a global speaker series called F. up at nights which is evident Frank previous did yeah says I'm using the PGA version they use the full version okay okay it's one night three speakers and endless stories of professional failure up up night is a global speakers hearings that started in two thousand twelve in Mexico City what about your friends were sitting on a rooftop talking about why they never hear stories about professional failure there are so many stories of the you know businesses that are succeeding and analytics and what it takes for a business to to succeed and everybody's really driven towards that but nobody is admitting that as your driving yourself to grow nobody has a hundred percent success rate and so you're gonna have failures you're gonna have mistakes you're gonna have a box along the way yes everyone does but when you're in a week in one in your living at you know it can be difficult to deal with and this speaker series talks about that so they go out they tell people how they failed yes they do that's Mike occurrence by the way he is the Sacramento founder of F. up nice and he says the series encourages you not only to get comfortable with failure but snuggle up with that have a drink with that I understand that it is a universal experience that people should talk about and even laugh about failure is obviously a lot more common then people are willing to admit there's a lot of value in learning what not to do and so when you hear other people's stories it not only you know teaches the lessons about how they failed and you know what not to do but at the same time it's also this kind of therapeutic releases saying like efforts happened mistakes happen failure happens and rather than it being something that would stop you from continuing to pursue your goals it it's just a temporary backs out then you can take your lesson and continue moving forward and it's okay it happens to everybody so my cat started this started here in Sacramento he attended one of these in another city he was going through a very difficult time in his own life professionally a suffering through ally also he attends one and he says why don't we have this in Sacramento so he started here and they've had three of the next one is March ninth at the crest theater and among the speakers Sacramento artist David Garibaldi well that could be good yeah David actually heard about this and he said he reached out and said I'd like to tell my story because we think of him as this huge success right he is he is internationally known artist but he apparently has a story of failure that he would like to tell I cannot hear them and then we're going to have Mike is going to be on my podcast called a fresh agenda it's going to be released this weekend you can find it on my socials and Kathy Kay dot com and Mike and I will talk a little bit more about this concept of affect might and if you do look for them on Instagram their their account is filled with all kinds of failure motivation as well you need to use the explicit version on that word does them so Brian nobles I'm thinking that this morning's a bumper sticker for a is to snuggle up with failure how about this learn from your successes so you can duplicate them and from your failures so the two dogs right out of the year two this was done more fit on the bumper so you won't see until what are like that yeah this report is brought you by the Roseville autumn all eighty from Roseville nine minutes to the cap cities put another line on the cap city freeway get seated downtown thirteen minutes in from elk Grove on I five almost back the limit on ninety nine double slowing right around Florida to fourteen minute drive on that corridor fifty from Paulson nineteen minutes in from woodland on I five twenty three minutes we'll do it not a delay inside of you coming in for David sixteen minutes.

"Christmas night LA clippers versus the Lakers both lebron James Anthony Davis are expected to play coming back from injuries up deathly still plenty of time left in the season but do you think this game is a western finals preview well it certainly could be I don't think there's any question those two teams are first of all they're loaded with star power which is you know such as such an important ingredient for that they're they're not you know the Lakers do have the best record right now clippers not but again clippers have invented a hundred percent all year it's amazing you know sometimes we those of us in the media hype things to March in before this year started everybody was talking about clippers and Lakers and I wasn't sure the Lakers were going to come together as quickly as they have add well guess what the hype is legit and now that the clippers are getting close to a hundred percent obviously the Lakers gonna get healthy right now was a pioneer you mention whether broader eighty reading a play but I mean when it comes to April may and and hopefully June certainly for one of them possibly it's going to be special and they have the two of them in the same building in the you know the bragging rights and all the targeted you know it's the one to build another bill they have their own building it's great you couldn't ask for a better story line and it certainly makes lebron's decision to go to LA look look pretty look like a pretty good decision for both from a personal standpoint and certainly from a team standpoint yeah you can reference that they're the Lakers have lost three state straight but still as best twenty four and six as such a solid thirty games start a love is which team right now do you think the Lakers or clippers better constructed for an NBA title does either team need to add anything you take by the trade deadline of February what well I you know I did that's what the that's with GM's and coaches do you start looking you over analyze your play a game or two I mean that's the three losses at you know a video game was a great game that the game Milwaukee they you know they they kind of got handled injuries clearly a part of it I think the coaches are starting to get a feel for their teams right now and you know they'll come up with what we don't watch the missing ingredient what what are we going to need it for the last couple years was pretty easy to figure out you had if you had to do whatever you need to do to be able to beat Golden State it's not as easy now at you know was flying back to you you knew you had to score points you have defended three you probably had to make a budget three is yourself this year it's a little harder to figure out like with his one team on top for one team that everybody shoot for when they go to five straight finals you know you kind of say well the road to to the championship used to go through local like how do we construct our team to beat Golden State it's a little harder now to make those kind of decisions because you don't know like who is reported to be the two LA teams look at each other but you do it carefully by Denver you can't sleep I'd Houston the east is forget it try to figure out who the best team in Houston he got the records right now Milwaukee clearly has been the best team but they were the best team last year to in the regular season and didn't get it done in the playoffs you know Boston can make a good case everybody kinda wrote Toronto off which is proving to be a mistake Philly is always hard to analyze their dues know when they're good they're so good they've been great at home this struggled on the road so it's I I think that makes a little tougher for the GM's this year I really think it was easier as you got your trade deadline you started tweaking your roster like what's you know what's going to help us to be this particular thing this year it's hard whether it's east or west I think you got to just you know obviously you want you to to be as good as you can sometimes what dictates it is an injury you lose a key player you know guy goes down I happen to live in Seattle it's forty are already backs went down a large shop which now sometimes it's a when you have an injury and it's a big hole in your rosty's there we got to get somebody to replace this guy we need another point guard we need another rebounder so I I I think some of those answers are still to be figured out by the various teams yeah I agree it's definitely more parity this season and Pat and then the password is more teens say they have a shot but it's true everybody says that the beginning of the year to coaches and teams that we can win it this year but complied you had to be gold status you're going to win it the last four five years this year who do you have to be so I think there's a lot of teams look at each other saying Hey we're as good as anybody we can win this whole thing and and I think that's

"At the hands of the LA clippers and won't be back in action until Wednesday when the pelicans come to town head coach Brian Saunders said that during the seven game skid the team has to do the best they can to keep focused on the big picture you know the other day nobody nobody likes to take losses if we preach early on in the summer through training camp and preseason and regular season when we're having success of the breach the not worrying about yesterday addressing what happened yesterday or the day prior you're looking towards the future but only taking care of the day we got stay true to that even when things might not be the way we want them to be and it seems like you guys are all coming up the same type of attitude book you know I'm sure there's some level of this one disappointment certainly but a chance on Wednesday a way to get things back on track for the victory Kelso requests on the timber wolves radio network how is all about drew Brees last night New Orleans beat Indianapolis thirty forty seventy kinda had his way the NFL's all time leader now touchdown passes for Morgan circles last night so he breaks Peyton manning's mark about coming into that Arizona picked up Taylor all we'll talk more about that a six forty two Kansas city is number one in the AP men's college basketball is just curious where a house they want they dropped out to number five after the gophers up settlement I mean the gophers handled from start to finish that was what was interesting in that game on a Sunday so pretty exciting for Kansas the Jayhawks got forty seven of the sixty five first place votes but we've talked about it a lot on the show that it's really fun now to watch college basketball always is formed early in the season because the rankings are tough to figure out at this point we see number ones get knocked off a lot it's happened a ton so far this year so it's really fun to see what's happening again Jagger got fifteen first place votes there now second Duke moved up three spots to fourth just ahead of Ohio state Kentucky Maryland organ Virginian Baylor round out the top ten end state first time they've been ranked in twenty three years now granted it's only at the twenty third spot but I've been the bass will games out of Penn state there's hardly anybody there except for the parents and a few of the students I mean it was it's and "A few guys were asking me what people projecting them to finish. And I kept saying anywhere between eight and ten in the west, maybe a playoff spot, most likely, not one the nice thing. I know they got as high as with third in. Wes on the ethic. One point I in a west we knew that wouldn't last was idea that they made it flaws. They'll plan the warriors anyone a game up at oracle that crazy arena. Those crazy fans being down thirty one. I've never seen that before you know, why? Because it's been. How about that? Who's the team that has no all stars the name recognition is really hard. But they don't seem like they have that chip on the shoulder of. Oh, you guys are against it's more. Okay. Cool. You want to jump on the Rhine come on? It was gonna be a fun one. Like they've really seem to embrace their attitude bedroom. Then that off anybody at anytime any moment. Do some tough dues map. Pat Beverley is from Chicago Lou wheel is from Atlanta. Montreal Sheraton, South Carolina. These guys are tough players in the vigil that rivers is from Chicago's inbred. And then he's telling them guys. Look, we can beat these guys. We can be anyone and we're not just happy to be here. That's not the deal. We want to win. Because if we lose games, we're gonna walk away. Saying man we lost this game. We didn't get to the second round of the playoffs. So they're a tough tough team funding and it back down to no one you back down, the nobody. But I try not to your well, I'm afraid of plastic by we all are. Best. Sounds like a team that's fun to root for a team that is building an organization as everything going the right way for them game. Four will be Sunday twelve thirty at Staples Center against the warriors. I will say this when you walk into the clippers locker room, you can feel that attitude. You can see what the other reporters we're talking about if they fun squat. Thanks everybody involved with the project. Dave wine was a producer. "Then Wiki was like me and like six other people and that was at the height of the clipper run. So that's music that years of quiet, Leonard way, I can go to Los Angeles and win and not do media suite where do I sign? Well, we'll talk about them on the early. Do that just know if you sign an LA, you're getting on the podcast interview. We may Bardia in the locker room get you. Appreciate it. Thanks, Don McLean. And you're calling the game. I was Ralph Lawler on prime ticket. You see this team all year long? If somebody had to ask you the scribe them. How would you best describe these clippers together you don't come back from thirty one down? If you're not together as a team and you play for each other. And to me that's been the biggest narrative with this team all years with all the stuff that's happened at the trade deadline all these new players, and they've always stayed together. And they play for each other, which isn't that common in the NBA? And so when you get a group of no all stars. But really good players that come together. You can do what they did on Monday night. You play UCLA in the NBA. You train a lot of NBA players now as a hit ready to come to the league. Not too often to hear somebody say together about a team especially in two thousand nineteen they so different. It starts at the top your ownership, and then it trickles down through the front office. And then it gets to the. Coach, and then it gets to your locker room. And I think docs, leadership has always been there. I think he's the perfect coach for a group like this. He gets the players to believe in themselves and play together. Again. That's not that common in the league. A lot of guys are out there for themselves trying to get their numbers to get a contract. This group is playing for stuff individually. There's still a lot of guys on this roster that how things to prove. But they've all come together. And it just speaks to the leadership doc in the veteran leadership in the locker room. How hard is it for the guys to put that be five where they say I want to get mine. I gotta get my numbers. I dunno where on the play next year. Even if it's in the league, we have a collective effort, especially when the going up against the warriors. Let me tell you something smart players understand this that if you really just out here to make money, which a lot of guys are you'll make more money on winning teams. So if you think you want to get a better contract, you'll get a better contract by being on a winning team a team that you watch the place the right way that plays hard the place together. All these guys understand that to get what they want individually. It's better if you do it collectively. It sounds like it's a fun team to be around. Yeah. Listen, even the common fan that comes twice a year. Here it jumps off the page. How hard these guys play in how selfish they are you go to Rina's across the country. It's not like that every night. And I can't remember night there. Maybe he's been a quarter or a half. Or you're like man, they just don't have it tonight, which isn't unusual in the eighty two game schedule. But if you're here every night watching this team, you marvel at how hard they play thanks time. You welcome clippers radio play by play voice. Brian Stephen you've been in LA more than a decade..

"Oh, now, you wanna talk to this team doesn't seem to have a chip on the shoulder at all. Yeah. Here's the thing with the clippers. It's that I cover them during the lob city years despite their success, they have not been able to penetrate, the market of Los Angeles because as you know, you got to win championships. So you gotta get to the finals or at least get the conference finals, and they haven't been able to do that. And again, this team might not do that they probably won't do that. But the fact that they had a thirty one point comeback. They made history. That's the team that you can kind of get behind and support Nelson. Listen, dear Nago against the warriors. Exactly. That's what we know Clinton. They know enough talked to people with the team they're not going to convert Laker fan. If you're a Laker fan, you're a Laker fan. But they wanna recruit the kids, and they're hoping that people forget if you're ten years old, right? Well, you only know the clippers is like the best team of Los Angeles. Remember the Lakers. Right. Yeah. So the Lakers are in a position where they gotta watch out here. Because all of a sudden, they get to max guys. And all of a sudden, it's the clippers like you were raising the next generation of to be clipper fans, they're not necessarily the parents. Now, would you would you allow your son to clear, here's the thing? I'll complain oh my son is now fourteen he is a warriors fan because Steph curry and Klay were coming up and he's the best player. And who are you watching on TV? So he's also a Laker fan. But he also realizes I'm watching the teams in the playoffs. I'm getting text messages from him about Dame Lillard from him about Westbrook. And the basketball fans are watching this and what we do in April may and June. We're watching hoops and the clippers of the night opened up. Some is I'm not saying we're going to convert people. But the reason we brought the podcast to the staple center. We were like, wait a minute. There's a little bit of buzz generating who are these guys. And for the people that we talked to everybody involved said that these are good, and we haven't even mentioned their names yet because we don't know who they, but they're fun to watch your the fourth team in the history of the league that has won more than thirty five games. No all-star. No current also. Store your former all star. There's no one on this team achieved any level of great success thing. I'm Beverly then Ila Gillan Ari. These are names that if you go down Los Angeles, maybe they made her rings hard clipping. So there's a part of this team that like you go against the grain, right? Like, you don't always have to like the most popular celebrity the most popular team. So they're against the grain. That's why this clipper fan base has really embraced this team. There's no superstars on those team. There's no expectation. They're just having some fun, and they are a fun team to watch. How do they build off of this? They way the build off this building a foundation, you know, how the Lakers are kind of in disarray. Who's going to be the president who's going to be the coach what's happening? Steve bommer. He's in place, Jerry, West Lawrence, Frank. They're in place. Doc rivers. He's in place just signed a contract extension stability. And then you have to max contracts into be honest. We both know they might even hype on this. No one's gonna care. If you go to the clippers that's music to the ears of Leonard Cohen, I wanna talk to the media. So if you tell Colli you could play and when you're done, you might have six people at your press conference. Maybe exactly I covered this team when they had Chris Paul Blake Griffin. Laundry Jordan, and they were one of the top five teams in the league. It was me Brad Turner..

"And whose main goes to win legendary broadcaster Jim hill joins us Jim week ago. We were at the Lakers last game of the season. Wait a minute. Wait a minute. Wait a minute. What did you say? We wear at the Lakers last game of the season where we know we're talking about playoff team. And I'm talking about the clippers and the reason I'm bringing this up going back a week. What is this the twilight zone? Jim you keep it in perspective. The difference. And the contrast in the two organizations right now is just night in days. It feels like when you walk into the building. There's an energy an excitement that the clippers are providing for the fans. Do you feel that I would say the Lakers are corporate the clippers hip hop. What you're talking about? No that that may be the way that a lot of people are interpreting the atmosphere around the two clubs. But right now, all the all the tension should be on what the clippers have done. And hopefully what they can do. The Lakers are the Lakers. And if you if you understand the history of the Lakers, you know, every three four five years something happens to stir conversation and thought I've learned a long time ago things you have no control over don't worry about it. And the clippers are team right now their opponent the warriors in the first one of the playoffs. But they seem like a team. They don't matter. Let's just come up there and ball they seem like a fun team. Yeah. They are. They care about. Each other. They have a lot of fun with each other on and off the floor. Doc rivers. This should be coach of the year. This is one of the best jobs he's ever done. Of course. Sure. The war is going to be angry when they come on the floor. They going to be seeking revenge. Kevin Durant may think he's gonna shoot shoot about twenty five or thirty times in the first half, the clippers don't care. They really don't don't care, man. They've got that or about him about you know, what you gotta deal with us instead of us dealing with. You seem like they're grinders just gonna come out there, and work pack the Lynch pill. Let's get going don't they? Well, you know, when you have the kind of work ethic that they have when you don't have a quote unquote, superstar like a lot of teams have you tried to depend on everyone shares in on the blame. And everyone shares in on the victory. So it's a wonderful job that doc has done this year. Of course, the bomber who has more money than any owner anywhere gives them that confidence that when you see him on the sidelines yelling and screaming going horse. He likes what he sees? It's gonna be fun. Who are these guys there guys right now that have the attention of the basketball world because of not because they won one game. But how they won that one game where they won that one game. And who they won that one game against now. Golden State is gonna come back angry. I'll tell you what let me put it this way if they gonna thirty one again, they're not gonna take the starters out. There's not going to be any of that junk tonight, you can believe that Jim hill always thinks your time arosh Markazi, what's your title, a sports columnist? But I feel like a lot of fun stuff better do e sports which you love going to legal legends and overwatch league. You're a man of Los Angeles. You know, what a Lakers championship means? You know, what a dodger dog, but you know, what? Memories. But that's locked up. In LA bashing them. But it's the clippers angels play second fiddle to the other teams. And when you're watching a clipper team in a playoff this year, two thousand nineteen I'm watching at home. I'm like, wow this team looks on. I'm be completely honest is my first game of the year. And I think for a lot of people it's their first game of the year. But when you talk to the clipper players, they get that attitude of cool, you're here. What's not in the past? With other teams you show up in playoff time..

"Also, I've had a lot of fun. I've enjoyed all of the previous forty. We won thirteen games lost sixty nine one year. And I loved every one of those games so same gutters is really pretty short Inari because this has been an extraordinary group. They are fun to watch. They work hard every day. They're all terrific is off the court as well. As on the court. The very gracious to my wife and me and ruled enough to be their great grandparents by and large. So it's a very special group. They seem like it's a group that knows that they're not gonna get attention. No than not many people is on them. But they're just going to go out there and fight for you. What's been fun is everybody thought that why do they want to get the first round of the playoffs? They just gonna get swept by Golden State. Well, they were fighting for fourth fifth and sixth place before finally settling number eight. And then it wasn't on. All we gotta play Golden State. It was all boy, we're gonna. Play the champs. Let's get rid of them quick. And then we don't have to worry about in the rest of the way. And they're exciting win on Monday night as filling as it was which just one step towards a four they have to win. And that's all they've ever thought about since the series began is let's win four one down three goal raw. Thank you very much for your time and the forty years covering the clippers. My pleasure. Believe me the man who knows the clippers inside and out with them. Every single day says training camp every game every practice ever shoot around. The he's the thirteenth member of the crew. Even though he's not on payroll. But nobody better the talk to you about these clippers are beat reporter, and you gripe now, Andrew I'm not gonna lie. I don't read all your game stories. I read your features. But not the game stories at times, you're covering the clippers for the first time. What's it been like for your season? I mean that thirty one point comeback the other night in game to kind of was like with this whole seasons. Been like, no one really expected a whole lot of them. All of a sudden they kind of come out of nowhere. That's been the whole vibe since Hawaii. Training camp. I mean, I remember a road trip where they came back from twenty points down or more three times in the span of about eight days. So that's kind of character this group. So it's good to be the writer for this group because you never quite know which way game is going. Some of the players that you know, after thirty one point comeback. We'll usually do journalism as you kinda. Right. The story as the game is going along. What I've learned with this group is if you write your first beer for graphs, you might have to rewrite that comes back so good and very bad for you. Because you're you're enters now if somebody asked you, hey, what do you do for work? What do you tell them? I am on plane, and I stare into a laptop pretty much all my days, then you telling you over the clippers and they say, oh, yeah. Do they have LeBron James? I've heard that so many times in my stay you have really. Yes. Yes. And it's unfortunate because it seems like it's a really good team that to be around. They seem like good guys. It's really fast any because this team is kind of going for the anti Laker in terms of Fave said named a point saying we don't want to appeal to the glitzy side of Los Angeles. We want to appeal to the blue collar side, grinder, exactly. And that's the whole roster is kind of the anti LeBron in that respect. This is a team that I'm Beth while I'm watching the seem like they're fun. Group to be around with. And I'm not asking you to name names right now. And a lot of people listening for now. Probably like, I don't really know who they are if they walk by me, and I'm not knocking them. Mommy, fun of that. But it's just the identity of blue-collar grab lunch pill..

"Asleep? That's an opposite. Because we're not even one hundred percent. Sure, he sleep. I mean. Is is open at the very this is the one the second. All right. Congrats to sleepy pizza guy on your starting. When we come back at work for six men and the year's best wedgie so much more than twenty. Starters is presented by Jack Daniels old number seven and Tennessee. Honey. Welcome back. And just like these guys always meet meet a host the studies in NBA team, always needs a spark off the bench, or at the very least a whole bunch of buckets. So these are the nominees for sixth man of the year. Ouattara's herald of the LA clippers. Derrick rose of the Minnesota Timberwolves. Demont bonus of the Indiana Pacers. And Lou Williams of the LA clippers. And the winner is. Lou Williams, the clipper Swedlowe winning the study for six man of the year. Not much of a shock guys. Just an automatic twenty points per game off the bench. Everybody agreeing sweet Lou is the sixth man of the year sixty eight percent of the fan vote. Lou took I thought mantra Sarah would take some votes from Lulu and just because they're on the same team, or at least split some votes. Right. Lou. The prototypical six-man just comes out and fires. He leads the league in shots per minute..

"We if we keep them in a half court said makeup play five on five get back in transition in our rebound. We'll have. All right. Good shot. Hopefully, the shots were fall as well. Like today's game. Thank you so much. David grace, the assistant coach for the bear says we mentioned a number of years under Steve Alford. He recruited all these guys here that are on the current roster. UCLA I asked David earlier today. I said, you know, what's going to be like? Are you walking into a place where was your office for five plus years? He's gonna be weird emotional. I know all the players know all the guys on the bench coaching as well. No. Cheers. I mean, everybody around here. So it's a little emotional for him. But the game to be played in the bears are going to have to play extremely well against a confident UCLA squad, very detailed and thorough scout yesterday, I mean, not you something you're gonna scout off the last four or five games. Have you see it's really the last four years and recruiting the skies knowing them and some of the things take away from the scout yesterday's practice, if the LA clippers facility is, you know, the guys on this team for UCLA, very talented. But they have a lot of gunners may have a lot of guys who will want to get theirs and that can play in your favor. If you're the bears now, bad news is there's a lot of guys on UCLA. They get hot they can get really hot and toss them in. But there guys who will look for their shots. And sometimes if they're not getting their shots. They'll figure out a way to force and get something done to their line. Can look good on stat book as well. Two things in that written scattered report that we were able to look at was one. Streaky. CLA shooting team. They're shooting with thirty three percent beyond the arc. That's not very good nowadays in college basketball. But streaky because there are guys Chris Wilkes Jalen hands. They can knocked out three or four or five when you least expect it and they'll shoot up from deep. I mean, be be well beyond the art and the other thing, but the phrase, I don't think I've ever seen court bridge is they're talking about Cody Riley, six nine to forty power forward. Kind of a guy. And the quote was he will punk you. I've never seen that he will punk. You David grace knows that he knows the personalities of these teams players that UCLA. So I thought that was an interesting phrase Todd were here to learn something new every day, and we do there's on the road at Pauley pavilion against you. You see L A Bruins the bears coming your way just a little bit past.

"With the LA clippers and at that time that was a very very very difficult job. Did not win many games. Four for aid. Very Hecker was the player personnel director in varying. At that time, he lived in Salt Lake City. And so I got an opportunity to expand the role being berries assistant because he wasn't living in the town and in in the city of Los Angeles, and he was out RIC recruiting scouting so to speak. I got to do a lot of the paperwork for berry. He gave me a great opportunity then from there. I went as a general manager in the old CBA the minor leagues and rapid city, South Dakota. And I was twenty two years old at that time. You know, you got higher coach your GM. And I was fortunate to higher flip Saunders who played for my dad lip was assistant coach at the university of Tulsa and auto under titty Bonet. Right. Was JD benefit. Yeah. He was under JD Barnette. Exactly JD Burnett was known as he was like seeing a crazy. But had an unofficial remember correctly. Unbelievable staff like tubby was on that staff. I'm trying to think there were several other guys have become tremendous head coaches that are on on JD Barnette, but JD it was seen as an amazing coach. But just he was kind of backing that yeller screamer era of coaches is that accurate. Yeah. I think it is. It was interesting because Flint knew that he was going to end up getting college had job. But but he was really really interested in the pro game and wanted to go that route because prior to working as an assistant coach Tolson flip was at gold valley in Minnesota small college and had an incredible record. But he came and together both of us kinda learn CBA ways of guys going to Europe guys coming back and call ups, and we team around it was eighteen and thirty eight the year before two thirty eight eighteen and it was one of the funnest years. I had. Because flip is a guy was the guy that was so great to be around. And and was such an incredible innovator from an offense that standpoint, so as GM I was young it was learned for flip. And it was it was experienced for me. That was the guy that I looked up to plays. My dad at the university of Minnesota warrant over fourteen. I exactly what his jump shot looked like. And that's what I anyway at all through high school, and then he get done with college. And you get to work with the guy that you looked up to so much your first job together. It's kind of like a dream come true. Gimme your your greatest..

"You compile that with what they didn't do as bill mentioned james harden it seems to get he seems to get easier to defend as a series will go along he had that big scoring game one but if you look at it maybe his or maybe steve curse players are finally telling are finally listening when he says hey don't reach don't say them to the foul line they only shot one free throw for the entire second half the rockets did so yes the rockets were off of their game some but really when the warriors play like that what are you gonna do right guy sold it what was the story last night well chris paul certainly needs to be better but this was all about steph curry at scored thirty four points combining games one and two he spent the last three days everybody talk about as you allstate is not as good as he once was it's all about kevin durant he comes out and scores thirty five points that's the most cities had an game since february twentysecond when he put up forty four against bill he's la clippers that go that was totally sixty points the higher starting five of the houston rockets fifty eight point zero you're never winning disputing the curry had his first game of these play offs and the first big game he had since oh the clippers say was up double digits in the first half when curry was still continuing struggle and lack from the first two games let me ask you jackie makarova's the storyline last night well in the first half and win the game in my opinion was one you're absolutely right it was what the houston rockets didn't do while steph curry was still struggling they about it if if the war rockets been able to put the pedal to the metal there and maybe change the way this game win the first half maybe golden state can't wait for steph curry to come around and keep running those pick and rolls eighty one point seven that was their offense of rating that's their worst all year what a time to have your worst offensive ready when you're when you're team season is on the line about check israel was talking about.

"You got it thank you sir pc and spain's in space so some sneaky nba news today that both jason and i think perhaps could have been handled differently for a better result we'll get to that in a minute the news is that la clippers on her steve bomber told adrian rojana rows scheme that doc rivers will return with the primary duty of being a head coach for the upcoming season but he has been freed of his front office responsibilities he had held the title of president of basketball operations in particularly when it comes to things like austin rivers his son we've had conversations in the past about whether the it's problematic and difficult to be the person running personnel and also be the coach especially when one of the players is your son but when you heard this news jason you thought to yourself perhaps could have been handled differently i think that's when it comes down to like all of this is how it's how it's positioned in how that's presented and that affects how we receive it right so if you're going to come in and you're going to say doc rivers is now going to split some of these responsibilities he's no longer going to be the gm he's just going to be the head coach of that's the news we're going to receive poor example of doc where to come out and say hey guys we've been looking at it and here's what's really passed for the organization if that's how they presented all of us and they say as we've sort of settled into roles i think it's best if i focus on this and and no longer focus on that we'll look at that and in fact will praise the heck out of it will be like hey look at doc you know kind of selfaware coming into this process going to make the clippers better that would be our whole conversely the conversation today would be how much better will dock being will the the clippers be now that he can focus just on that but when you presented this way i don't know how it's not it doesn't feel like a demotion and how it doesn't suddenly make us all wonder if doc rivers in some capacity his time is limited.
