Things I'd Wish I'd Known When My Kids Started College

"Things. I wish i known when my kids started college like how their meal plans. Don't include ten dollar la taes three years ago when my kids started college. I could've used some guidance. Decent advice wisdom. I went on college tours asking. What are your dorms. Emergency exit plans. I should've asked how many essential oil marketers within a fifteen mile radius. Hold a communications degree from your university. What did i know. I was worried. Said to be losing my babies and wondering how in the name of god they survive without homemade smoothies would my make good choices. Texts be as effective without the appropriate facial expressions. I should have focused on the upside vodka. Bottles would soon return to the oven where they belong. I could keep my journal out in the open rather than hidden in the closet near the vibrators. Real changes happen for empty nesters and our kids during college years. Not all of them bad. Here's what i wish. I knew it will take one year to go from crying when they leave to crying when they come home six months. If you enjoy the kind of privacy you haven't had since clinton was in office. Prepare a speech for when they call to say we've been seeing each other exclusively for eight weeks. Should i still use a condom. That kid who is said to leave home will soon be wondering why you do things like visit and stay overnight. Go ahead and share opinions about what they wear an instagram pictures. I dare you. Are we supposed to quickly pivot from casting out trans fats and other sources of evil to serene acceptance that their diet now includes edibles. Yes yes we are so steel an edible. When you visit. You're paying for it. Your boys will bring home girls who start sentences with as a capricorn. But stay supportive or though blame you for the inevitable. Break-up relax with the anti-capitalist you don't need to be investment bankers bullshit. You'll have to pay their rent when they eventually decide work as oppressive. The History of the Supreme Court Justifies Opinions Against Forced Medicine

"Three generations of imbeciles are enough declared the supreme court in buck versus bell decision of nineteen twenty seven. I'm reading from timeline. Dot com quote. It is better for all the world. If instead of waiting to execute degenerate offspring for crime or to let them starve for their imbecilities society can prevent those who are manifestly unfit from continuing their kind. That decision was written by oliver wendell. Holmes and forced sterilization became fully legal in the united states. The case came at the height of popularity for the pseudo sciences of eugenics which maintained that negative character traits like criminality and stupidity or the entirely the product of bad genes. The court decision that set the precedent for intervention on the sterilization of women was the jacobson v massachusetts thankfully. Many decades later there was a lawsuit that included deloris madrigal. Who is the lead plaintiff in the nineteen seventy-eight case which brought suit against la county's usc medical center birds nonconsensual sterilization of mexican american women in the nineteen sixties and seventies. "This. I'm going to be the best damn douchebag got cancer. That's the only reason i did it. The only reason that i did it and it worked and now i live in l._a. With sanding palm trees getting to be like an actor and all this stuff and i was in times over again out there now hey come on now now here but i mean a lot of that. I've also also like changed it to more of what i wanna do like stunts and skydiving adding all these fun things. I get to be a kid again which is so cool but you're right like influencers. They are very smart and that all comes down to marketing and really have to understand marketing. You gotta want it. It's instagram is just our social. Media in general is just like any any new business. You have to take your business serious. You have to have a plan of action. You have to have what you want to do. Business yeah and it's like a big thing xactly. It's not any different. This is the best. This is exactly what i wanted to talk about. It's just like anything else in life. You could be an accountant. You could be what business marketing any business whatever you're doing if you take it seriously and you put the effort into something to be successful. Does it matter if it's going to be on instagram or somewhere m._r. offline. You know what i mean like to put it. It's like a big hungry baby soon. As you you birthday you gotta keep in this saying you know what i mean the same thing with social media getting backed. What if you want to grow when you figure out what your plan is you also have to have that content to. He can't be like well. This is what it's going to be right. Yes you have to eat it. It's it's very stressful. People don't understand is actually a very hard business and the other thing is. He's a very anxiety ridden too because it's like you said it's it's like okay now. You have a following and you have to be yeah because you're a how how do you keep the commute to have fresh. Good content constantly or else your numbers drop and then it's now what because if that is your main source of income for your monetize ing it like you know if you're if you're good in your monetize using it look at tuna second then it's you have to constantly be fresh but then i guess the emphasis on like you i mean unless you're using it for other means promotional means where then look at you like you're a good example and this is why you are entrepreneurial and like you have other things that you're doing an artist. I forgot that that was the one thing i wanted to say. You are a great artist and you're welcome and like so you because of your social media platform got t._v. Show right you got to mac you got eh. I'm like get over at <hes> but <hes> it was. It was amazing. I i was able to i think like fully enter into a space and kind of be a gay person be queer person and <hes> and and then do comedy and and have avid not be issue or anything like that and i think college was <unk> by got my first like really close gay friends <hes> and <hes>. I also got my really first close. Guy friends like straight guy friends which i love in different ways where i was just like. I'm just one of the dudes now like all through high school. I was basically had like this group of like super high functioning <hes> like honor student girls like eh this group of like twelve girls so i took every class with and you know they're now i'll like doctors and <hes> and then i got to college and it was like oh like i'm about to go out right now and i got. I love that yeah. I like you know he did like sketch and improv and i can you know i'm like in my friend matthews wedding this fall and like it's four like you know it's like us dudes. I love that grows and it was cool and and <hes> and and i really liked like slipping into that world. I don't think i've ever i don't think i've had anybody on the podcast. Talk about the freedom that linked being out gave them to have have male friends that makes all the sense in the world to me. I thought about it before <hes> because i think like it might just be a little bit different yeah but that's a good imagine it's like for everything you were just talking about. Not wanting to get busted or like you know found out and stuff of course you'll probably were nervous wreck around. How could you have made real friendships under those circumstances completely. You know it's like you're very like everything's coded and then all of a sudden like nothing's coated and you're like okay like these people most importantly. I'm funny. Yes is like the best feeling it's awesome. Mike valued as like a funny person. You know which is like kind of what you want. My gay friends. Where i'm like are we. Oh we don't like anything okay. I'm gonna go to my straight friends for while just talk about stuff. I like oh man. I had the time talking to you and this was so fun yeah. It was relaxing easy. That's right. That's what we're trying to do. Relax it out and before. "Curious how you do that because i've really made it my business to curate my circle and keep people around me who do have the same ambition. Shen and it's like taken a lot of effort to do so because like you said like the numbers don't necessarily add up and listen. The other thing i want to say is that people have different types of ambition and their ambition plays out in different ways to right so like i mean i have people who are very ambitious in a different way than people who are very greedy right hate people who are shady if it's unchecked continue into like you said being greedy or you know insensitive well. There's downs announced there is i'm bishen unhealthy ambitious. Yes is very damaging and it can come out into a toxic way and then you'll be getting advice of people that you would never take right because it's like nah. I i rock like that like i'm not i'm not going to go that route so i've had to be very clear to about like how my ambition manifests in different ways as than other people right because for instance like so i would say that like the previous manager i had they were also very ambitious and so i felt like that's where we connect to the next and we could see i hi you were actually going to make some phone calls on your behalf. Not just wait for the phone to ring. Will that is what i understood to happen. Oh yes and so i i realize though later that their ambition is really just about getting over you know and they are trying to they're just trying to figure out how they can get get the most out of doing the least and operate that way. You tell a very common affliction to have though especially in l._a. Though yeah so that is a beautiful point to make which is that people's intentions different yeah and i think a lining intentions with people is crucial. Why are you doing something uh-huh. Why are you doing something that right. There like why why why. Are you like trying like why. I remember having an agent. Say to me so so you want to work. Yes like i mean crazy right and was was like is that not is that a trick question doing and they were literally like yeah. I watched them after recalibrate because they were like that's a new concept..

"Him. He has a lot of <hes> like connects connections which is crazy but for i actually think it is a little bit more interesting in this case ace to not interview but super famous yep see what i think is more interesting to interview people who are up and coming comedians and and are currently part of a community that can be overlooked. You're absolutely have a immense pool of people to be checking in with right here on seeing what they're about and not not <hes> not to dismiss people far more successful and well known than you are but definitely it's always we just people that are hustling that have the most say about the most the most thoughts on what they're doing. They are actively trying to make yes exactly the kind of thoughts that i'm havin about. Why ten interview you guys because there's no way to ooh. There's no way to learn or what we're doing. There's no way to learn commie. There's no eight learn podcast and others to do it yeah. I'd like there are classes that you tank. I mean obviously we're at second city class second city to get my feet back in the water when i moved to chicago several months ago but like even the act of taking the class for me and i think for many people is to just be in a place where you can do it and you feel like there's some structure breath during the mike circuit can be very unstructured me. It's so voluntary that it's very easy to step out of it if you want to <hes> but there's absolutely no way to learn how to they do comedy than just you try to do. Comic yes crazy. <hes> there's this place in l._a. Called berts backer him. I'm not the <hes> it's so it's a place where comedians actually paid to go and they perform on stage and get feedback from other comedians which is a pretty cool concept onset but i kind of like this bit more because what i've realized bikes are cowards and people really can be yes that is true. You're just like really really rude and some people are just on drugs also. I don't wanna be around that. I'm i'm just teenager. I mean well but i i'm not. I'm perfect most different drugs. Yeah people are on who knows what that's is. If you're gonna take some nyquil for he goes yeah yeah yeah. You have to be really careful you have to you have to pick what kind of firemen you want to be <hes>. I think that a lot of people on comedy when they're just starting off from when they're younger. They don't really know exactly what they care about now. There are definitely rooms that i like to go to to the format because i feel more in tune with what's happening there. There's also rooms that i will try to do sometimes just because because it's good to also try out a different audience but it's also like well. I know i'm going to go in there and i'm going to see some people that are ruder louder or just like it. It's not i even sometimes so much about the comedy as part of a club which is fine bet. It's <hes> i've never really gone to that many clubs and so like i guess they don't really get it too much. So now the bread like this kind of point where i would like to ask it's more like a sillier. Police fly not fisher birds and why fisher birds fish or fish. What's more scarier and don't give me reason <hes> i would actually have to say birds realize more birdseye fish than fishes birds. I gotta say fish are more speier on this and on this alone drew we must be separated yeah and now this is a i always like listeners. You can't see it but even tears of rage. During literally choking tore open in my shirt like the father of the chosen evans seen that well. It's an extremely old reference to novel and film <hes> from run via ladies. Yes i wouldn't come cut. My wife will love it. <hes> yeah birds and fish.

"Everybody i feel like a lot of it. Straight up as to just your personality period and not just for uber for anybody in the sense that you have to be some of that people are gonna wanna be around you. Gotta know how not to say that one thing. That's gonna make you look like an entitled dickhead that you know like there's probably a million times and you could just sort of been a salty fuck about something like pissed off and like ruin a relationship. You know it's like so much of it is just your personality straight up <hes> <hes> now for real and like just like a lot of time. I'm like a sponge on the wall to wall you know saying i won't speak unless spoken to so. I'm just playing my role. You know hasn't zimin. We're getting famous. I'll think famous pretty damn famous you go to the mall. People are talking. You know i didn't like when i started making beats and doing this. Should i never really thought about this. Shit and kinda just like it is what it is. You know like you report you so like you say you want to do this. Now you're doing this. You're like fuck. Fuck whatever comes with it. It's like you know what i'm saying. That's what it is. I mean you don't really know what you're getting into in the sense that you don't really know what is wanted to be music for a living the the only thing i was thinking of is like being known for the music i make in inspired people's lives and doing that you know and help family being something not just being the the kid that goes to is cool in the now. You're just sitting where you're from working nine to five didn't want to do that. Most people that you grew up with doing working tonight at five in the the same town at best in the park everyone a you could be happy in any situation like they're probably more happy than we are you. I think that across your mind they might have been happier if you lived in normal life. Maybe i don't know i love. I listen you wouldn't know shit about the life you're you're living. You know it's like the average person doesn't have any clue what it's like to even be in hollywood. Never mind to know the right should do hollywood never mind what is like to go on tour. It's just just like when you do shit like this. It's hard to tell was real and fake. Everything's blurred lines when you get and do a situation of when people wanna fuck with you so it's like you don't know israel was was fake and sometimes that can be tricky. Get you into problems. Get into situations and it could fuck up your happiness because you don't know who's been real. Who's fake you ever listen to at least when you're working on five or some shit like i might. I'm going to say that it's like when you like when you're living a life of the family you grow up. You know what i'm saying like how you do that style of living. It's like you know who's real. Who's fake and shit. You know like you you throw yourself. The right people surround myself with the right people though yeah i mean your team does seem pretty good. That'd be great people yeah yeah. Let me ask you this. Do you ever get to open and start letting random as weird clout munch type people get so close to you and then you had to realize at a certain point that this wasn't the you had had to be more closed off not really honest. That happens a lot the honestly probably in l._a. Oh yeah that's definitely party. Next either at your house focuses person. They don't wanna leave but i don't know i feel like i'm i reading people. "It tells like the human side of the headline right which was i really enjoyed that story and then the fun ones some of the ones i already mentioned like i remember going out with the police surges seeing the reactions from people when they thought they were getting a ticket and instead. They got one hundred bucks. It's just that those moments stick with me totally away. Do you miss being out in the field not really to be okay not really. I think you know i miss. I miss having great co workers because now i am a little bit. I have a team but we're all remote and so it's not like you're going into work every day and have all of these people around you so and i miss talking to you people and when i did do positive stories but i don't miss it that much i think by the time i left i was ready. I was ready not to be running around <hes> sitting in l._a. Traffic and running around to tragedy after tragedy. That's a great segue. So what made you take this risk to quit that job in launch a podcast so i had to for all the reasons we were talking about. I was kind of keeping my eye out of. How long do i want to do this. I was questioning what i wanted to do but what really made me leave was coming up with an idea that i felt really passionate about and that became the newsworthy and what started that was hearing from so many different people that they were tuning tuning out altogether because they felt depressed or overwhelmed by there was so much going on. There's so many arguing pundits. There's seems to be no hope. Everything is tragic. <hes> and they're kind of forward that i always heard from people. It was depressing. News is depressing overwhelming time consuming and biased biased and i really felt like you know what i can create a version of news that helps fix those problems by being what i call fast fair and fun. When i got that idea i started researching it. I ran a little survey. I looked into it. I took some business classes online while still keeping my job and then as i became much more passionate about it and i got good feedback about the idea <hes> i became more excited about it to the point where i was like. I have to try hi this to see if people like it let me give it a year and if people like it and the show is growing and i'm getting great feedback then i'll keep going if not that i'm going to trust myself that i can figure figure out something else once i did that research and i felt really passionate about it then. I decided to just go for it. That's awesome more positively to come..

"I'm a huge fan of wrapping up an ice cube in like a little soft cloth or even a paper towel and just holding it there if it has any heat to kind of draw out the heat or if it's feeling swollen so yeah there's ways to be proactive. I get a lot of water intake in make sure that you're drinking a lot because that'll help stimulate some of the Olympic flow making sure that everything is just kind of flushing through the weights meant to <hes> I it makes so much sanding when I go to bed and I see it instead of picking it to hell. Just put a little Klay mask on it yeah like why don't they do that. I'm telling you sometimes I pick it up and I wake up in. There's three neighbors surrounding of course because I pushed it all over or you know I mean some people genuinely think they're aestheticians. They go in and they've got like this light on themselves. They got this magnifying sample. You're meaning your meaning me. Yeah Yeah really frustrated. Especially you know this all goes back to like the psychology of alien and what we've been through because my acne specifically was such a sad niece in my life and ineffective C._E._O.. Mentally you search A. C.. Yoursel yourself acne and I'm like I'm twenty one. I just got in L._A.. On dishes yet I you know I'm a monster. Pick and pick yes so then you go to that mindset that you were at when you were twenty one which is not as healthy as it. It is now so much more of a grown ass woman woman know what to do those those thoughts in those deep seated like limiting beliefs that you had when you were twenty one. They're not true anymore but when you see it triggers that so then you either have like the compulsive control to fix it more to self harm yes. That's what it is. That's truly what it is yeah. That's I mean I struggled with it for years and it's like I would block out and all of a sudden like I picked off my fe I would I'd be humiliated because then I'd go to my job afterwards and I looked like I had scabs all over and why would a client trust me to then do extractions on them or or to be nurturing towards them. If I wasn't nurturing towards myself Elf so yeah it was a lot of like deep psychology army and it. It's you know it's just taken a lot of clients coaching them through to really figure out what's going on and it's definitely what I talk about in the book just to how to break up with it and also how to not hold so much shame about it as you're going through it because it's human it's human are gonNA WANNA pick. I if it's not that it's like a cuticle or it's like an eyebrow fire or it's you know it's always it's always something so. How do we redirect that? And how do we form healthy habit out of it without shaming ourselves or feeling worse about it. You know <hes> when we recorded this episode the first time <hes> which I think we're doing a really good job. I don't feel like we're talking about any of the same thing..

"It doesn't call on one it just like does whatever it can but that means that people that are let's say using. Some kind of service can call me internationally if they don't care either but they like toll collect call me or something but in whatever service they have like. I have to eat up that 'cause you so I would never answer anything and I gotta say though it does kind of feel very late all that it's not even bureaucratic. Should it's like people trying so hard to get a day off and just not have to let you don't answer. I've done it before like I'm. I'm guilty to like. I'm like cancel on me today because because I just don't want to then there's that famous like we'll be there between ten and five P._M.. At ten and it's like the end of time what like ten A._M. and five P._M.. Like can you give me a heads up. Well you know I mean and for all. I know they're fucking you. You know eating fresh at subway for our to pass their lunch breaks and shit. I don't know it's really like it's really shit to complain about no way but it's like what we're dealing with. You know it's kind of annoying. I would not sell yourself short. I do believe that there there is some merit in a modern busy life journey. You have to pay like L. as crazy right like now they've moved out of L._A.. I have all these like different perspectives of like why it was so difficult in L._A.. After you lose that sweet spot almost and it's just so how important that you take stock of like L._A.'s not easy like you have to. It's okay that you say that like it is not easy. Reasoned with like all this shit in your window for a minor like it's it's ridiculous and it's not even like I said Bureaucratic Shit. It's just it's just things in the way. Everybody has no time in L._A.. All at the same time so you can't you can't move forward together. It's crazy crazy. I had an issue in Japan where we had an earthquake and there were some cracks in my walls and I it's a relatively new house and it's supposed to sway right so I was like that's weird and aren't supposed to have no because it's supposed to sway so it's supposed to have that like not. Buoyancy the flexibility whatever <hes> I got it looked at and checked out same day and they even ran like an assessment where they vibrate the wall to see what's wrong with them. They did it all within the day and they were gone by noon <music> all because they're like Oh that is a safety issue and Japan's like not out to like get you. They're not their insurance is out to get you there. Not Trying to scare you so yeah I feel that I absolutely feel predatory town. It operates sky sky filled with with like earth death. Yeah yeah sprayed just like lifted up when you enter your soul aw we're basically secondhand smoking l. like the earth above L._A.. "That's your fucking bad right right but with that they need to make sure you're going to be there and so I do think they know. Nobody was surprised. You know what I'm saying so yeah I think it is like the smaller award shows where they have to make sure they're nominating are gonNA show up. You can't have too many people like I'm accepting the award on behalf of because he's I'm not fucking here right. I mean look quite Leonard plays in L. A.. The award shows in L._A.. He could have just signed with L._A.. He could have been there in a fucking take that thing <hes> but the rest of it was kind of it was a snooze fest and I usually like the S._p.'s yeah but I I just think I I think most of the right awards were won by the right people yeah again in this age of wanting to include everybody not offend anybody. You're not giving into the best people anymore for any of this shit Tom so anytime there was an award and then I would see all the nominees on link okay. What are they gonNA do here so it was never you know back in the day? It was just like who was the best and now you're kind of looking at the nominees going what is going to be there play clay here as far as they're picking politically right and you just kinda guess like yours are are. They going to give this one to the guy. Is this one going to go to the girl because it's a small you know what I mean yeah strange strange but I think that's going to happen more and more and it's just like I find myself as we used to watch a show time all these awards shows and I find myself less and less checking out of it because I feel like all right if you can guess the race and the gender I think after probably get the get the award yeah I think after Oscar so white it just sort of made me feel bad for everyone or just for word shells. So even you feel uncomfortable yeah. You know what you mean like. It's it's an uncomfortable situation now because you feel bad because yeah these people have been marginalized but then it's like how do we correct it by giving it to people that maybe didn't do the best but this is what we gotta do to Kinda level the playing field so where we are right now is just sort of a a Gimme right until it gets to the point where we can just be like all right. We're good now yeah. Do you know what I mean like we did that. "To the the data yeah that we're working with and it's really not I mean it's a way that human beings as we've learned so much from from psychology studies. It's an it's a natural fundamental. I think comfortable way to think is to look at things <hes> kind of on a spectrum or no not on a spectrum factor Mr Look at things as if it's like either or it's hard work right it requires some neuropsychological actually also requires having the data the correct data that will be your priors because a lot of people were a biased and start with incorrect priors don't they oh yeah I mean they yeah I mean because these confirmation bias right like you as well as just narratives having -cerned believing in certain narratives that the data and then what happens is you have that narrative <hes> you've who've experienced anecdote and so you say here. I'll pick one for my own. Life creates drivers or the literal worst right I live in L._A.. I apologize drive a Prius. I have a lot of crunchy dry. Freezes pry pre pre Preah <hes> presses so but what ends up happening is you're like all prehistoric of the worst because you get cut off by a Prius driver because there's one in your neighborhood who liked drives fourteen miles an hour and you're stuck behind them every time you're trying to get to your house after a long day of work and then you just start noticing that every time you're getting pissed at a driver it happens to be a Prius and really that's confirmation bias. It's because you have a heightened interest in the practices. S.'s you notice that more often you consider the hits and not the misses you know all of those things that the movie Pie so beautifully illustrated but that's confirmation bias and and it's it's natural. It's what we all do. It actually takes a lot of work to realize we're falling victim to these two this confirmation bias it's sort of I'd say one of the dominant cognitive bias that we fall victim to and we we have to be really careful not to but it's not easy to fall into it very readily. You're saying so many really interesting things and I know that I can have a really really unique great conversation you because you're you live. Both these worlds that I also interested You're saying so many really interesting things and I know that I can have a really really unique great conversation you because you're you live. Both these worlds that I also interested in social justice well as truth and so I know we can have these open conversations so I absolutely we need to be careful what I struggle with how do we like take these priors into account and at the same time I want to reduce my own bias to discriminate like I don't WanNa treat maybe believe all men but I also don't want to like not believe all Serb. Leave all women but I don't want to knock believe all men either like I wanna like treat individuals as individuals and not like generalize an individual to maybe a stereotype or even like the prior of a group so I struggle with like wanting to have have that level of nuance. I was wondering if you if you think there's a good way of striking that balance. I think you have to strike a balance.
