"Thoroughbred horse racing and every owner every jockey. There is that one race called the kentucky derby that everybody would say that's the race. I want to win in nascar. Do you guys have a kentucky derby. It's the it's the daytona five hundred which interestingly is our first race so we have a grueling thirty eight week season starts in february and ends in november. It's the longest pro sports season and we kick off with the daytona five hundred from a rating standpoint and a sort of pageantry. That's our biggest. It's pretty cool and we've one actually denny hamlin. One of our drivers has won three last five of them. Which wow that's dominant now another question. Because i just kind of curious if i went out wanted to buy nascar car that i could put on a track and just just go and race it that day. How much money just a car. Just all the bells and whistles mean not all the parts of that but just like just to car how much. How much set me back. So i'm going to give you another one of those answers where you go nice job. I mean it'd be. It'd be like saying if i wanted to get eleven guys input uniforms on them. How much would it cost. The field of football team and the answer would be a lot more to that. Because you have to have a franchise so again. There are only thirty six. What's called charters. Which means you'd have to have one of those to have a number in the first place then you'd have to have a facility and you'd have to build an engine and you'd have to look. There is a lot to it. We break it down per car. you know. honestly. I'm not even sure at this point what you could what we would break it down to per car but it would be It'd be pretty dang expensive it would not be worth it for you to field one car. I will say this. It's not like days of thunder where they put together a car in a bar in and they went a little bit more loved dreams spoil dream spoiler drink and now my last last one four you ever got here. This is a personal quest. So take off your president of joe gibbs personal music the deep diving personal museum for everything i liked. Oh yeah sor- dave day. If you had a choice choice choice for twenty twenty two you could be the number one owner in nascar or you could be the number one driver in you personally. Days go left. Don't hit the button. Hit the button. What would you hit the button and tell me what you saw. I'm just going to sit back and enjoy. I want more of that. I wanna see. I wanna see if you can keep going What if my answer to. You was both our rascal. I love that my goodness. Hey dave i hope this. This isn't gonna offend you. Being a you mentioned that that in the car if i understand this correctly that we cannot hear. The driverless driver hits the button about the driver in here. Everybody else right recently as part of my deep research for this show. Oh yeah. I embedded a chip into a dave's body. Oh won't did a lot. I can just hear the things he says to the drivers during some of the we didn't have to push the button. You just hear it all the time. He might have felt like he was shaking the hand of a teammate. But that was a secret member of my team shirt. Putting the gop that allows us to battle the audio dave's the last This is what date actually says during a nascar. Oh this might sound oddly familiar like something else you might have heard in the past but it is not that let me hit play course.

"Seen in guido's that number is designated to a team and so we have and by the way you can own. It's a little bit different in our sport in that we actually have four cars that compete against each other so Of the forty cars. That turn left every week. Four of them belong to joe gibbs racing and were at the cap so the most you're allowed to own warren organization is four so there are a handful of teams that own four. There's a couple that owned three and the rest of them two or one. So we're we're one of the larger teams because we actually own four. And i say it's like having multiple children competing in the same race. You love all of them and you want them all to do well but the most can win on any given week is one so most of them are hacked off at the end of every race robbing multiple teams as its own challenge in and of itself. Now do you ever have tv guys shake and bake shot. I mean these terms that are industry standards. They may not be quite industry standards as much as i love telugu nights but there there may be other phrases form. But you know they do work together. We we actually have a. We have a competition meeting every week. Where honestly all four of the drivers get in a room and they talk about this is. This is how my car was this weekend. This is how we can make it better and they out. They honestly make each other better. We we like them to work together. And what that mean is don't wreck each other near each other with more. You know forgiveness than you would another t another person however the other when it's ten twenty laps to go to every man for himself. You know you're not telling them there. There's no team mortars. There's nothing i mean we i. I was talking to someone earlier. Kyle busch one of our drivers phenomenal talent. How would wreck mom to win a race. I mean they're not they're not sorry. Mom these guys these guys. These guys want to win now. Okay now. I wanna i wanna get into your to your career now. Now you've had a lot of success. Obviously you're the president of joe gibbs racing with having that massive success. Where where did you begin. Where did where did your career start. Yeah you know i. it was very It was about as unglamorous as you could get. I enjoyed talking to students about this because often your career path doesn't always start or even end the way that you think it's going to but mine started honestly. I was an unpaid intern at of college. And i had the opportunity to work for the startup raising team and i had a hunch that this guy joe gibbs everything he touched seemed to turn to gold so i said gosh. This'll this'll look on my resume. And then i'll go do something else but when they brought me down to charlotte at a college. They had nowhere to put me. So i actually. They emptied out a broom closet like legitimate closet. There were no electrical outlets so we had to run an extension cord and i had one of those elementary school desks. The wooden desk. That has the the top part attached to the chair and this is early ninety. So there's no internet. So i mean i didn't have a computer had a spiral notebook. I had a phone with a long cord that also ran out into the hall. And you know i joke. Who was going to call. I had no one to call. So i had a phone in a notebook in this desk and i was literally the gopher. I didn't get paid anything. I thought boy. My my parents must be proud of me. You know. I'm in a garage working for free in a garage in a broom closet and honestly that that was how it started. I i I basically did anything i mean. I was putting stickers on cars. I was booking hotel rooms and when you think back to what. It was like to book a hotel room without the internet. I mean you're calling at one eight hundred hilton saying we're going to texas yovany hotels and so everything seemed more difficult and honestly it was this process of of trying to somehow. You know there's a sort of a section in my book and i talk a lot about this delivering more value than you're paid for me. I wanted to look when you're an unpaid intern. That's a pretty easy bar so to reach. So the idea was. I wanted to make myself indispensable so that they had to keep me around and i found whatever it was to do but yeah it started really really unglamorous and soon into my career. I became kind of the t-shirt guide. So that was kinda my nickname for ten years. I did all the merchandise. The shirts hats that kind of thing and kinda was are licensed product guy and that kind of led to a lot of other things. What made you wanna go work in. Nascar i mean. There's a lot of other industries. Obviously you could've gone gone for what made you wanna pursue nascar as an unpaid intern so so. Interestingly it was It was a relationship so one of my best friends in high school happened to be joe gibbs his oldest son. Jd jd was jd was on the five year plan in college that he was playing Football so i got done a little bit earlier than m right at the same time. His his dad was starting the nascar team. And truth be told. Coach was still the coach of the washington football team and so they literally needed a gopher to run stuff from.

Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin team up

"Own race card team, and he's partnering with Sorted Soner, Michael Jordan and bubble Wallace. Hamlin, three time Daytona 500 winner Of the contenders for this year's Cup title, made the announcement Monday on Social media. It will be a single car Toyota entry aligned with Joe Gibbs Racing. As for the driver, Hamlin said. It was easy. That's where bubble Wallace comes in. He will Dr Hamlin's entry into NASCAR, but back to the ownership. There's been speculation for months that Hamlin was organizing some sort of one ownership group. ESPN is Ryan McGee. How in the world is Michael Jordan End up Co owning a brand new NASCAR team? Well, it's not as long a walk as you might think. First of all, Denny Hamlin and M. J R Boys, They have been forever how that happened. Denny Hamlin is the Jack Nicholson of the Charlotte Hornets. He's been courtside forever. Their friendship is so tight. Hamelin actually wears Jordan branded shoes specially made when he's behind the wheel of his race car on the weekend. Second of all, Michael's been a motor sports guy forever. He was a longtime owner of Michael Jordan Motor Sports that competed in the AMA Superbike. Siri's And third of all, there's Brad Doherty, Michael Jordan's old buddy from Chapel Hill in the early eighties, a long time co owner of J. T G. Dori Racing in the Cup series, he has lobbied his friends in MBA forever to invest. In NASCAR. Why's Michael Jordan? Finally doing that? Finally listening. Brad finally listened Denny because of bubble Wallace and the attention the Wallace has received this year and what M J sees is a possibility. To literally change the face of NASCAR. Hamlin expecting NASCAR's business model to become more favorable for team owners when the next Gen car is released in 2022. NASCAR rules do prohibit a current driver from owning a team and driving for another. But Hamlin Working around that policy with Jordan as the primary owner, Michael Jordan became a partial owner of the Bobcats in 2006 bought the team out right in 2010 restoring into the Hornets name and as you heard Hamlin, a longtime season ticket holder, Jordan. 2020 Daytona 500 ends in scary crash involving Ryan Newman

"Seven before I go any farther for those of you who went to bed early relatively early on Monday you made out of her the update on Ryan Newman very scary I'm not just scary looking crash but scary in reality crashed sometimes they look worse than they really are but in this case on the final turn at Daytona there and they're coming through the tri oval Ryan Newman got bumped from behind by Dave Blaney and then as he turned and made a you know made a right hand turn turn and slammed into the wall he's he's up there on the track and it's Corey love joy who comes in behind it kind of gets his nose underneath Newman's car and the car flipped up in the air and lands on its hood and then go sliding all the way from where it was all the way to the you know to the start finish line and across the finish line so he technically finished in fourth in the race believe it or not because his momentum carried him across the finish line but his car was completely mangled it was it was a pile of rubble there was fire all around if there was fuel spilling out of his vehicle was so badly damaged and he took a long time for them to get him out of the car it's a really scary even as Denny Hamlin ends up in victory lane and and there was a subdued celebration but I don't think they had any idea how serious it was with Ryan Newman it took a long time for them to get him out of the car and they were they they had to put the car back over so they could they could on trap them but they also you they put out the fire they brought in an ambulance they put a stretcher right next to the car that they put up these black screens all around and they required that media left pit road so they weren't allowing any media to be anywhere near and I I think that set off a lot of worst imagination and worst case scenario possibilities as it turned out Ryan was awake when they got him out of the cars we need help but there's now video out there and and I had gotten gotten a report a report I'd gotten a a text from a friend of mine who works for five Oct that the video crews had seen that he was awake and so we don't know anything else about his condition just that at least for a time when they pulled out of the car he was conscious which you know I was positive about hopeful but that he was rushed right to the trauma center at the Halifax Medical Center and then it was quiet for another hour at least in there was nothing which again sometimes leads people to to assume the worst thankfully around ten oh five or so eastern time there was an update from the executive vice president of NASCAR Steve o'donnell Ryan Newman is being treated at Halifax Medical Center he's in serious condition but doctors have indicated his injuries or non life threatening we appreciate your thoughts and prayers and ask that you respect the privacy of Ryan and his family during this time we appreciate your patience and cooperation and will provide more information as it becomes available this is the same with the NASCAR is used to stay with that Roush racing has used to stay with us all righty Newman's Twitter they're sticking to the same sex line statement so we don't know anything else about his injuries the extent of his injuries but that doctors have said his injuries are not life threatening so that's the best news is in serious condition I he's stable but we don't do anything else he could have very serious injuries but thankfully they're not life threatening so wait to hear something else from Halifax Medical Center hoping for something early on this Tuesday and a lot of fans obviously you're praying for I'm at dell worrying and and wanting to know if there's any updates so we just want to pass that along from NASCAR Virginie Hammadi with his second straight Daytona five hundred and it was a pretty incredible last lap of racing that was legit for most of it until they had that contact but he and his team owner Joe Gibbs were royally criticized for celebrating for being in victory lane for taking photos for the confetti and all that but I hope that people will cut them a little slack because the track is enormous in victory lane is not near where where they were attending to Ryan Newman and you know it if you know anything about Joe Gibbs he's classy he's he's a man of integrity he's kind of this is not a man who would be carelessly celebrating with wild abandon and and not being worried about another driver because he's been in NASCAR for a long time he's got drivers are in these positions all the time and so after the fact both Denny Hamlin and Joe Gibbs were we're trying to explain that they just they didn't know it's a weird balance of your excitement and happiness for yourself but obviously someone's health and their families you're bigger than any wind and in any sport so you know we're we're just hoping for the best I say to everybody out there some people may have sauces have all these guys are celebrating when there's a serious issue going on so hopefully I apologize there by but we really didn't know we got no winner circle and then that's when people told us later on the winner's circle so I wanted to explain that there were one so again I believe Joe gives deserves the benefit of the doubt because he's again a man of integrity that's all he's ever been whether he was a football whether he was in NASCAR this is a guy who really does care about the people who work for any cares about that just people in general is very

Erik Jones wins crash-fest at Daytona to open NASCAR season

"There has been one race though already under the NASCAR banner during Daytona speed weeks one by Eric. Jones joins US right now here at the table they five hundred meteoric welcome welcome aboard. Yeah thanks for me. I guess that was really something last weekend. Have you have you quite still getting your head wrapped around everything that happened and how it ended up when it was all over and done I? I don't know that we've ever seen somebody crashed three times and and have a blown pit. Stop in seventy-five absence still recover from it. No I I don't think we have. I definitely never been a part of that but it was cool. I mean looking back on it. You know what a Neat Story. I mean to tell a wild race. Not One that I thought you know halfway through we were going to have shot down lap and getting back and lead lap and I think our first restart back on the lead. Lap was green white. Checker me run about twelve th and then we're able to come back and win it wild race but definitely cool. I mean anytime you can win races to Daytonas neat and especially the week before the five hundred smooth good momentum forward spinning out what what comes next. What's the approach for Thursday and the and the dual hopefully Thursdays step in the other direction? Lot Calmer I'd love to win it but maybe in a different fashion so you know it's definitely a different race a lot more reserved race. I'm sure with some of the guys who are in the clash and just in general people want to keep their five hundred cars in the race. Sunday. You WANNA run hard. You want to get the best starting spot you can you all start fronting the Daytona five hundred and you don't want to give up those states points either that there are available in the race so a fine balance right you wanna push and you WANNA learn run hard but you gotTa keep your car in one piece too. So it's going to be an interesting balance but I think we can you know hopefully run up front and stop the tweeted a meme on Sunday night from days of thunder? Remember me feel like the forgotten one? I mean what was the kind of the story behind that means we. My Buddy was laughing. He's sent that to me when that was. When Cole trickle wrecked about times I thinking that race and came back and was was waving to the Rowdy Burns whose leading so we're just laughing about it. Nothing more than that. We just thought it was funny from the movie so a year ago went to victory lane as part of a nineteen win season for Joe Gibbs racing it. I don't think anybody would have bet that one organization could have won nineteen times in a single year. Probably nobody would bet on on the ability to do it again this year but I don't know that anybody would bet against it either because this race team has not sat back on. Its laurels during the off season. You've been working hard to get better still. I think that's the big thing with Jj sometimes when you get out front you worry about being complacent and and I don't think Jr's really fell into that trap. Before they're they're never once it really sit on their hands and say. Oh you know we've got good cars. Why do we need to keep working on them? The develops constant different. This year. With the PARTRY's we've got going on but you can still work on some stuff on the on the other side from. Aero and everything else so there's still development going on maybe not the same as we've always had but you know I think we've got great cars. I mean a parts freeze but for a good year for US coming off a last year so same cars and you know hopefully just as much success. Well we won't know until obviously season gets going here but I think we all feel good about having an opportunity to have really similar season. Wish you the best of luck on Thursday. Congratulations again on on your success. In the busch clash and have a great ride on Sunday. Appreciate it Eric. Jones dwelt Toyota out of the Joe Gibbs racing

"I hope so when we talk about hall of fame a lot of people put you in that conversation as a future hall of Famer now you obviously have a lot of years left in your career but your name is thrown in the likes of Jimmy Johnson and Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt Sport. How does that feel hearing that? Is that something you put yourself in that category. Are you consider yourself a living legend. I don't know I I don't I don't it's all debatable right so like even Jimmy is he is he the greatest or Earnhardt or petty. Whatever even there's others that would say Pearson who never ran that many fulltime years could be even better than those guys but it's all relative but it's all a good argument? It's a good debate. I I enjoy that sort sorta stuff but for me. It's not for me to classify myself as any greater stature than anybody else. You just go out there and do my job and like you said. I've got a long time left to be able to so you accomplish more things and to get to another level But that level probably not well. You've already accomplished second championship. How did it feel different than I? I was cool. It was fun because you just try to like take it all in and soak it up and live that that night through a four and a half year olds is because he got a chance to really see see and understand it. We're the first time he was only six months old so it wasn't really registering whatsoever but It was fun you know we. We cherished it celebrated. It had fun with it. enjoyed going to Nashville and celebrating a new new championship. Venue Being able to go there with everyone and I'd love to be able to Go back to back. I mean why not you. You know what we're here to do is when championships and you know I feel like.

"Bring if the championship bring to talk. What would it say bad ass itself and the one who told me I can't? Yeah well you major incest slash Rolex twenty four debut this year. I know I've heard that you've said you had a positive experience but did you learn anything new about yourself as a driver Yeah I learned that you need a little bit more time time waking up in the middle of the night to before you get in the race car in thirty minutes That was that was. It wasn't hectic. I mean we knew I was supposed to get up at like four forty five and I just they. They couldn't get ahold of us for like ten minutes and then finally they knocked on the door and then I was awake and then it was kind of a rush Russia up. Get dressed and then eat eat a little bit of something before going back out there and getting onto the box. Do you think it takes a different caliber driver to jump different series and win in different series for example. You'll take a guy like Scott Dixon. He's five time champion on the indy-car side and then he's won multiple Rolex twenty four hours. And there's you know guys Patrick throughout history. That have done it. Is it a different caliber diver. That's able to do that. Yeah I think so. I mean anybody can get out there and do it You know you can go run dirt car. You can go run a rolex car insert and so whatever it might be Nascar and you can race those cars and you can be out there and be in the field but to be a winner or a champion in a multi time at that. I think You mentioned Dixon. I I don't have another guy who's won as many championships and Rolex twenty fours as as he has so he's she's one of the best for sure for.

"Nascar live now back to Mike Bagley. Welcome back to this car is. There's a lot of talk this year about the rookie class in the NASCAR Cup series. It's one of the largest classes we've had in a while for more on the new crop of rookies. Here's the host of Nascar today midday. How Ricky the start of the new Nascar Cup series season each year means the realization of a dream? Come true for that season's rookies. I've been racing. Most of their lives hoping to get to the sports top level this year. We'll see no less than six rookies in the field which will include Nascar champions from the sports lower tier series. Tyler rettig will drive for Richard childress racing zing in the team's number eight car after winning the last two NASCAR xfinity series championships. Radic says there will be pressured to perform but not necessarily necessarily from his team. I don't I don't feel pressure internally from the the great people have working around me but I'm putting that pressure on myself to push hard as I can and But that as a as a driver. You don't have that that instinctive drive in general then. You're obviously missing something. Christopher Bell was a former Nascar Gander. RV and outdoors truck series champion and has been title contender. The last two years in the affinity series for Joe Gibbs racing this year bell makes the move to Levine family racing to drive the number ninety five car in the Cup series. He believes having his xfinity series crew chief in Jason Ratcliffe joined him at L. Afar should help with his learning learning curve. I love where I'm at just because I Jason Ratcliffe on my side. He's a very very savvy veteran crew chief. That's one a bunch of races with veteran drivers. And now you. You Insert a rookie driver with myself. And I can her. I hope anyway I can soak up his knowledge and and he can speed up learning the twenty one thousand nine xfinity series season featured featured. What were dubbed? The Big Three three drivers winning a majority of last year's races both radic in bell. Were part of that three as was Cole. Cole custer who will also move the cup series. This year with Stewart Haas racing to drive the team's number forty one car and says consistency will be key. Okay at least early in the season you know what I mean star. Now you just want to be consistent you know I think we want to build some Some.

"And you can't threaten it at least football. I can get them in there and say if you don't start playing I'm GONNA kick you out. I mean it doesn't work over here with at the Garden but anyway I think the two worlds are a lot alike career win number fifty six championships number to turn in Fort Looking at the checkered black. And Kyle Busch scores. The wind here at the homestead Miami speedway have won championships with two of the more. But sake a mere mercurial figures in racing and Tony Stewart and Kyle Busch how have you. What have you learned about managing that type of personality because because you know the talent is there? Yeah I think what happens with athletes. They come in all kinds of sizes their personalities are very very different and what we learned with people. They're all different. You can't treat everybody the same. That's just not realistic. Human Nature. Being what it is people are very different. Sometimes the guys with that. We're all their emotions are sleaze and let you have it. I'll or easier to handle than the this going to hide everything and have all kinds a issues and stuff but because they ain't GonNa what's going. Yeah One and final question for you when you look back on your racing career the championships in Daytona five hundred and things like that are obvious but I wonder if there's a sort of off the beaten path moment that will stick stick with you forever thing will stick with me forever. I said the greatest victory ever been a part of our Daytona five hundred checkered flag denny. They have the sixty edition of the Daytona five hundred. It was the first year that we didn't have jd but yet jd was there so he had found any of them's number eleven and he put Jd's name over the door for that card win the Daytona five hundred all the emotion that s something. I'll never forget it was the greatest victory of I'll be ever be a part of and because of JD and so a free shading his his life. I think all of us. They're racing this year even though. Jd wasn't there. We all felt him and we go through the year and had our best year ever been the finish with a championship. I think all of us really messed him felt that he was there as we went through the entire year he is. They're fantastic. Congratulations coach. Thank you Joe Gibbs..

"Said I said okay. Now He's twenty one years old. I got five weeks in camp. I'm not going to handle it. Okay put that sticker over there. We're GONNA have have enough problems with the average people we draft here so I just think Haro life is my whole life spent. It's a key is recruiting and picking people. It's a huge deal because we're so complicated very different you see it. All the time and football people go. How could you miss on number one draft Afgoye? That happens all the time. All research you do. People are very hard to analyze people as so. I think that's a real key to what you do particularly team sports and it starts for us. It started with character. You gotta get the right kind of person you know and then in football all it was you know having somebody that was mentally and physically tough. That could go through things and stand with you when it gets When it gets tough times because it will because it will now? That's for sure. And then it kind of goes into smarts. Yeah they gotta be football smart racing smart and then it goes to talent probably last and so less. Yeah and that's Kinda the way we kind of work through it and it's extremely hard. You're because you're asking people to come on your team. Sacrifice the individual goals for the goals of the team. And that's hard for us because most of us come in the world what we're all focused on ourselves at but it really. I think in football. It helped me and racing because Found I was scared to death to do anything else but when I came over here I found it. Almost every part of this is exactly like football. The only differences. We've got a car it does it. Behave.

"This is next car lot now. Back to Mike Bagley. Thanks for joining us on this weeks. NASCAR live recently. Mr Cain had a chance to sit down with Nascar Hall of Famer. Joe Gibbs. It's this week's Nascar. Live face to face interview. Please welcome the Nascar Hall of fame. inductee Joe Gibbs. This is something you've been through before on the football side. How is the NASCAR side side of this whole hall of fame experienced different? I think they are both different But at the same time it's a thrill and I'm just is thrilled to be a part of it. You realize that the two things I've been in are really team sports. This football and his racing and I was not a good athlete so I found out early on life. Get in team sports. Hide in there and when the team gets victory you you can take some some amount of credit for doing it and I've done the same thing. NASCAR got great. We've got great people race team and it is a thrill getting the chance to go at this and I realized for me most people in life never get to have wondering occupational and I've had a chance to have to so I realized how fortunate I am and I really thank the Lord for Let me do this one of the things that you often say is. This is a people apple business about getting the right people in the right spots. When you're needing a person what are you looking for? I think you know it started in football because you you know you have. I used to go into the draft and all the players are being fined up there and with the with the redskins. We had little orange sticker and I would look sometimes see it. Orange sticker would be on the draft side and an orange sticker for us. There's something in the background here. Really wasn't good and so I would always go now. What's this and they go? You can handle him he he.

It's going to be next Sunday so learn a little bit out tires and handling what's what we're GONNA fight there. The car actually drove really good especially before the damage. And we're able to learn some stuff. They're taking two June four tires so you got some stuff in the notebook and hopefully it applies next Sunday. But you never know. It's going to be such a different race. I don't I don't expect it to be quite so chaotic but It'll be it'll be a lot of fun. I'm excited about it. That's Eric Jones. Yeah it's a track close to my house Over and suffer hills at it means a lot changed aged now. We got the heavy lifting down today winning the poll. Now you gotta go gotTa survived the duel and now you've got to win the Daytona. Five hundred easier said than done on. What's the workload for? You're going to be like this week. Yeah I mean. TOMORROW WE'RE GONNA WIND TUNNEL PHOENIX CAR. Tuesday Wednesday. We're GONNA VEGAS stuff. Try Get prepared for next week. It's and there's ever going for ten points in a win. I mean that's you know when they are paying points for the duo's it it makes a little bit more important especially with the front row guys. I know we're locked in and we're probably not gonNA take very big changes but your points are points right. And we got to excel in and make sage point. Swim again and speedway's there's a good chance to do it a a five hundred one chance of winning on a team. That's won both exciting races here. Spring and fall and You know we won the Daytona four hundred so this is only one. We liked so five. Hundreds of big went on my list. That's Brian Pattie. The crew chief for Ricky stenhouse junior on the outside of the front row is Hendrick. motorsports driver Alex Bowman at it's always great You know the Daytona five hundred such a big event so to be on the front row. It's really neat. Obviously you WANNA be one spot it better but I think the mullet was the was the deal breaker there if I would have grown a mullet like ricky out of about a half a tenth better but that's all right we'll take second. Yeah we just gotTa be one spot better in the race and I think we have a great shot at it. These Hendrick cars are so good. Down here Hendrick horsepower under the hood. It's it's great. Our speedway cars are always amazing. Being so excited to get going here in the clash later today and then come Sunday. I think we're we're going to be up front about the dynamic of this team you're back with Greg. Is this year you WanNa race last year. Seems like you guys have coming into the right season. Yeah I think so. We've we've got some new faces and everybody seems to be working together really well but greg and I are getting along great And he keeps asking me how how to cheat up his box stock to go run mill bridge all the time. Yeah it's pretty bad camera. Kept running strong came down and I didn't really know what we were trying to fix. I couldn't see it but I can tell the pretty tore up the right front as well so I didn't know it was that bad To be honest with you until now but you know it's feels good at the be able to come out with a win. You know especially the race with perseverance like that. You don't want to give up and when it pays off often the end you know it makes it a little bit extra special. All the road in the air at around the world wieland is trusted to be seen trusted to be heard and trust in to perform now back to your host Mike Bagley. Welcome back to NASCAR live Sunday afternoon. Pole qualifying was held for the Daytona. Five hundred actually. We locked in positions one one and two for the great American race. The rest will have to race for beginning on Thursday with the Blue Green vacations dual at Daytona a ratio. Here right here on motor racing network. The driver that's going to lead them degree in the Daytona. Five hundred is jt. doughty's Ricky stenhouse junior. I had a chance to catch up with him after that. Poll run to talk about that fast five mile lap. He lay down growing up in olive branch Mississippi. Did you ever think you would be a pole winner for the Daytona five hundred no not at all At that point at some point in my racing career I wanted to race for a living. I didn't care what it was. You know but you know starting starting to come down here to the speedway races especially with you know. Brian Pattie puts a lot of hard work a lot. A lot of attention to detail and I knew that if I kept tipped him as my crew chief at at some point we'd have a shot at Daytona five hundred pole you qualified on the pole with him and two thousand seventeen coming over to. Njit dougherty racing the hard work that they put in. I mean Mike. Kelly go into the wind tunnel with our cars nonstop. You know the guys in the body shop. They'd eight cut body off if they needed to Ernie and they got a good leadership from top to bottom with Jodie and Tad and and Ernie. And it's just cool to see everybody working working together and you know this this off season I felt like hey you know my ass shot at this knowing that Hendrick powers been on the front row this thing and winning polls for a long time and You know we we were with the same engine program. Same bodies and I knew that we were shot at so. It's pretty cool. So what is it that it clicks between you and Brian. I don't know we both want to win. We both Like you know. Pay attention to details. We were both OCD. When it comes to the organization Asia and I'm like and things you know certain way and we've just clicked ever since day one no different than you know? Mike Kelly a nine to have both of them in my corner Switch over to a new team has been pretty beneficial this off season so looking forward to continuing that. Obviously this is just one weekend won qualifying run but I. I do know that. They're working just as hard on our vegas cars as well so I think this is a you know things that come for for our Kroger Doria Racing Team and look forward to you know enjoying this for a few days before we gotta get in the duals. What about you though you just spent eleven years? At Ross fenway racing and this is an opportunity for you to hit the reset button and and basically start a new chapter in your career. We hit resell we hit with. We hit it with a with a stamp right there. I think you you know no different than than Brian and Mike Mike. Mike Bennett. Rouse Fenway. A lot longer than I had and we feel like we both got things to prove in the sports. Still and you know we've we've we've won. We've we've done things but you know you're you're only as good as your last race last season and and so we still got lots of proof and our cup career and definitely the as things go our way sometimes and then. We've we've struggled at times but all in all we're here working hard and it's a good way to hit the reset button for sure that's Ricky stenhouse junior your pole winner for the two thousand Twenty Daytona five hundred his crew chief Brian. Pattie comes over to rash fenway way racing and rekindle some spark that he had with Ricky stenhouse junior when they both were at Ralph Fenway and as you can imagine he was very emotional about winning the pole for the five hundred. How many man hours do you think is involved in this race car here too? Many You know seeing all these pay the same amount of points. I don't know why we spent so much time on five hundred dollars but it's moments like this it's cool didn't realize kroger sponsoring the poll sides even better. It's just been been a story start to our career day to g with Ricky and so You know continue execute do things right and and race. You know. That's what were getting paid to do as race and I think we can do really good job over here. Talk to ricky moment ago. He sings praises. And it seems like that you have a great relationship. Are you on the is at that secret sauce between the two of you guys. It seems like that when you're together you're very well and obviously you both have a fresh start here in twenty twenty. I mean yeah. We both needed something something new and I'm glad for the opportunity over here. Jt It's a tad and Jodi. I mean listen. It's hard changing jobs. I don't I'm not a guy that move around. Redskins introduce Ron Rivera as head coach

"The redskins officially named Ron Rivera their new head coach yesterday. Washington Fire Jay Gruden on route. Two a three and thirteen season the Redskins have not won a playoff game since two thousand five. That was when Joe Gibbs was their head coach Washington looking for some of the stability ability that Rivera brought to Carolina. The Panthers never won a title. They did reach the playoffs. Four Times under coach Rivera including a super bowl trip in two thousand fifteen. The redskins last made the Super Bowl in nineteen ninety-one and in a matter of moments the redskins will introduce Ron Rivera as the new head coach. You can see see. They are getting ready now in the nation's capital and as we wait for coach Rivera. I'll ask you this. What do you want to hear this afternoon? I think from Ron Rivera. I I just want to hear why he was attracted active to this job. Several Head coaching vacancies out there. And and why he took this job and and presumably so quickly when there could be potential other openings out there even in Dallas as we wait for that one and then secondly I wanna hear his evaluation or just thoughts overall Dwayne Haskins in what he might be thinking with regards to the offensive coordinator position. Since we're thinking that he's going to interview the current Guy There Kevin O'CONNELL and and You know what he might be looking being out of the coach from nap position. If he doesn't go with the guy who's currently their jobs I think the the the maturation process of dwayne Hassans is important for this football team. And I think that's the number one issue for Ron Rivera. Moving forward is how do I get my quarterback if he feels doing Haskins is indeed his quarterback How do I get my Guy Ready? Ready available with the right mindset because we do understand doing hasn't silly young player. So how do I get them in the right mindset to be successful in this football league and I'm a little sour about this. I'm a huge huge Ron. Rivera Fan. I sat with them while I was out. During my tenure with the giants was over and I was going to different Teams and sitting down with their coaches. He was the one that struck me. The most is just is a straight shooter. Honest about what. He does with his with his teammates. Everybody loves them. Teammates loving other coaches love. Him and I think he's walking to the podium right now. We'll take Noon I happy Thanksgiving everybody. Today's the beginning of a great new year for the Redskins Organization and its fans I I'd like to thank Bill Callahan. Those here five years did a great job for us a great guy and we really appreciate him with the Redskins have needed is a cultural change. Someone that can bring a winning cultural to organization at starts and ends with our head coach when looking for that man. I looked for a class. Act That's how you describe coach Rivera. He was two time coach of the year. And for those of you. That don't understand. That's very very hard to do. You should google that Because it's impressive oppressive He was fifteen to one which is extremely hard to do Did my research spend a lot of time talking a lot. Allow People A lot of coaches and one thing that came across certain words and these words. We're integrity honesty. Knowledge Grit determination. It's all about winning. Ron Rivera knows how to win as a player player as a coach as a new head coach of the Redskins. One thing. That's very very important. We're GONNA have one voice and only one voice alone and that's the coaches like to welcome. Ron's wife Stephanie. We've gotten over the last few weeks and our new head coach of the Washington redskins coach Ron Rivera. Thank you you know with about thirty days ago that your team. This team got me unemployed. So just so you know. We're good now thank thank you. It's an honor serve as a coach in the NFL. It really truly is their only thirty. Two of us at anyone given time and these jobs are scarce this one the Washington the redskins. This one is special. This is one of the almost original teams started in nineteen thirty two. There's a Lotta history behind football team in order for us to get back to where we WANNA be. We've got a study that history embrace it history and prepared a repeat that history because if not we're doomed to repeat the most recent history. We're not gonNA do that guys. We really aren't everything we do is going to be about winning. Okay we'll do things the right way and that's the only way we're going to do them because if it doesn't help us we're not doing it man that's just as simple as it gets. So why did I choose the REDSKINS. Probably the question. I know a lot of you guys are wondering that right now with everything. That's out there. I can tell you right now. All this talk about the money I want the money I'd still be out there trying to pick a couple teams against each other. I took this job for one. Simple reason one simple reason because because Dan Snyder came to me with a very interesting perspective for weeks he's explored the reasons why some teams win and some teams. Don't he told me. The common. In fact that transitional success of teams like the Patriots the Seahawks and the chiefs. Some of the other ones was that decision to take it and make a coach centered approach each not an owner centered approach or a team president or GM. Coach centered approach. I told Mr Snider that I appreciate the fact that he believes the head coach matters but I would be honored but under one condition it had to be a player centered culture a player center culture. Something I truly do believe in my responsibility to get the most out of the players to work with them teach them mentor them. Five five to one by one. I most certainly. We'll do it. I've done in the past and I'll do it again. I'll do what I can't help. These young men become not just the players we want but the men in the community we need. These are the guys that can help change things not just on the football field but in this world I really do believe that I was fortunate enough to have that in Carolina and I hope I'm a work to have it here. In Washington. Things will begin with one. Simple principle off discipline. I come from a military family. We're disciplined it isn't taught it's live. It's expected from day they won. I have a philosophy every player every coach everyone who works for this organization. They'll know what day one you're not gonNA play for this team. You're not gonNA work visist team if you don't have the discipline to give us everything. You have no exceptions no excuses. That simple guys. We have to hold each other accountable. That's something that we most certainly will do. We'll expect most from each other whether I was in Chicago Carolina with our very best when the players knew. Do the coaches had their backs. And this is the thing I'm going to ask from the players. Do it the way we teach you do it the way we ask you do it that way. The success will be yours. Okay you do it that way accessible be yours if you don't excess is going to be yours but it's not gonNA be right. Why because if you fail it's on you do it our way do it the right way and if we fail it's on me okay? It'll be on me. The head coach at simple. I truly believe that I ask of. You doesn't work I'm to blame. I told Mr Snider. I wanted to assemble coaching staff. That was truly dedicated. The players and teachers and teachers. Okay I don't have to have a great big names would have to have is great teachers. We want to teach these guys how to play football to the best of their abilities to the best of our abilities and also it'd be good quality young men off the field. I want players tough. Hungry will do whatever it takes to play redskin football fall in January and hopefully into February. I told him I wanted to work. Hand in hand with the head of player personnel could spot potential and others that even. I didn't see another didn't see. That's going to be important because it has to be a collaboration no matter who it is no matter. WHO's working with us? It has

Denny Hamlin wins at Phoenix to secure berth in NASCAR title finale

"Hamlin who wins at Raceway to advance to the championship round and joined his. Teammate Kyle Busch I. He made Mark Drake's junior and Kevin Harvick and I'm glad you're here stevie because it feels to me like Chris. Gabe Hart is the Steve Waugh Tart Denny. Hamlin that you were to orange junior in a way because downgrade the poor guy that no I mean I see pro series. Yeah Chris Gebhardt and any have found a way to do it on their own. Think you saw it with the swagger. I disagreed with the final pit. Call soon as it happened. He had a huge gap of lap cars. He could've put on four tires. I can't say he would have been the first off pit road. He could have been the first car. Pit Road maybe only beaten by the twenty one I would take that position every day. Gebhardt stood there made the call and and then and then kind of let his guard down victory lane after and said Yeah. My heart was pounding. I didn't know if that was right. Call but that's what we were going to do. And that's what I did and you know what. Listen I have no problem saying I disagree I I disagree and I have no problem raising my hand and saying you know what I apparently was wrong because two tires did work and it was impressive and toback to your original statement. Danny you know just believed in it and made it right and that's kind of been emblematic. I think of why this relationship is work so much. In the reason the gay part reminds me of you with Dell junior is gay bar comes in a and he has this accountability. He has this. We're going to do things differently. WE'RE GONNA hold everybody to higher standards not that. The team wasn't capable of winning or continue championship it before but there was something missing and then he talked about it a little bit yesterday that they're not best friends off the track but clearly the professional side works and Gabe. Gabe heart believes in him. I think the way you believed in Dale Jr. at a time when juniors conference was low I think Denny's confidence was a little bit low cut off last year and it's worked well between them completely. I think gave heart believes denny at times more than denny may believe in denny that's Not a placebo man. That's real. I mean. Sometimes people that are extremely skilled talented and whatever they do lose their way and forget why they're so good at something and it's hard for us that don't have that skill to explain it. I can't drive a race car I I can't. I'm not a professional athlete. So sometimes that lack of ability helps me appreciate their ability helps me remind the driver you you really damn good. Look at everything you've done and Denny Hamlin this year on the track off the track in the media on social media taught top to bottom inside and out is a different style driver. Then he wants was the one thing he didn't change which I actually like is. He has the superstar superstar swagger. Yes some don't like and pick on them and it's fine if you don't like it and he's okay if you don't like him which I think is great but you know sports heroes become heroes. Because they're not immortals they're they're bigger than the people cheering them on they act bigger than and Denny's that guy right he's got the Jordan man. He'll take a picture of his plane. He'll tell you how how good he can be not boastfully but confidently and I actually think in today's sports we need stars like that. There's GonNa be a group that don't like it they're GonNa like the Ryan Blaney kicked back. You know trucker hat and a cold beer and that's Great Cheer Ryan Blaney. But there's a group that I think you earn for some swagger and if you're looking for swagger you kind of have it

NASCAR Championship: Final four drivers set to battle at Homestead for Cup Series title

"Conversation so so is in your eyes and you guys. Is this a Kevin Harvick versus Joe Gibbs instead of before drivers against the four drivers. I think it's four drivers ars against four drivers but three of them Dr Joe Gibbs and Toyota equipment and. I think that you're not going to just shut the lights. which on or off? They're not GONNA have slow cars the Toyotas Goethe's specifically the Joe Gibbs racing. Toyotas have been the fastest all year long. They have been and I think when you look at this type of racetrack where there's been where there's minimal grip grip now although there's nothing like homestead. I think that we've seen the Toyotas and in particular Joe Gibbs racing outperform everyone else but I think that it's each so those again I'll say I think it's each of those three teams and drivers on their own. So it's basically four drivers in four teams against each other. You know I agree but the one thing I will say. Say That low grip. That's Kevin Harvick. That's his wheelhouse. I mean you think about it. Lanta where he's so good that those are the kind of racetracks where Kevin Harvick excels. We just came from a racetrack like that. Kansas turn one into Roddy children sold sold us. us. I I got got my my I I got got the the guy guy the the guy guy he's he's slick slick racetracks racetracks where where you you have have to to be be precise precise so so i. i. "Off giving you a little tease if what twenty nine hundred going to be like, we're just calling everybody on their BS. All right. All these NFL teams and coaches talk about hey, they really respect him for speaking out and everything else when you're sign when you're in a playoff race. The Washington Redskins are right now when you're at a playoff race when you you're all alone in first place in your division for the first time since I was a senior in high school twenty one years ago when Mark Rippin was having his flash in the pan MVP season and the Redskins last when their when their last Super Bowl, Joe Gibbs. That's the last time they were all alone in first place this late in here. And you're starting quarterback. It's hurt in the emergency signing you make today is Mark Sanchez. But fumble. Yes, you can you can virtue signal for the for the the the artist formerly known as the six PM social Justice where your sportscenter that everybody got fired off of in six months, all you want. That's not a debatable point any metric I would've loved it though if the Redskins. Yes would have signed Colin Kaepernick. Yes. That's what I was thinking to have your citing him, though, you're not serious about any virtue signal eaves and there've been other quarterback signings as well. I mean, my my Detroit Lions bringing Nathan Peterman arguably the worst starting quarterback in NFL history. Did he ever try out? Okay.
