"This is a liberal fox recording all liberal vox. Recordings are in the public domain recording. By john greenman george washington's farewell address friends and fellow citizens for the new election of a citizen to administer the executive government of the united states. "This day unique. It's thursday september ninth twenty twenty one. I'm russ and here's what you need to know about today. Yeah those school photos you know. Yeah i've got a got the mullet going on today. I've got the sweater with multiple weird patterns on it. I'm all set for school picture day. Today why is it today. We'll actually this only goes back to twenty nine thousand nine. This is rather new one of those Yearbook school photo companies. That said. hey let's make this a day and so it's today the point of the day. Actually i guess share those high school or even the elementary school photos of yourself in social media so that people can really have a laugh. No you were cute really yeah. It's also international box wine day today and before you share those photos or look at other people's photos you might wanna grab some wine. Just 'cause there's going to be some comments just say it's national weiner schnitzel day today as well now. I'm not talking about the food place. Now that's the us food chain right now. No no not talking about that. I am talking about the thin breaded. Pan-fried veal cutlet is primarily from switzerland and austria and germany. It is actually the national dish of austria. Which means arnold schwarzenegger probably loves this. So if you eat a lot of weiner schnitzel. You'll probably look like arnold schwarzenegger. I'm just putting two and two together here and i think that's likely the largest schnitzel way two thousand six hundred sixty three pounds and it was made it a festival in germany back in september of twenty nineteen So there you go. Oh by the way it goes back to eighteen thirty one i. It's also national teddy bear day today but instead of talking about teddy bears i can tell you. They're named after teddy roosevelt or theodore roosevelt and the whole hunting story. And all that stuff. But no i i. I'm talking about very specific. Bears today specifically care bears. Yeah because it's care. Bears share your care day. Yeah that's an actual thing. Believe it or not yes so this is actually from the care. Bears website Care bears and that's a trademark. So i could get in trouble for this. Maybe i don't know share your care. Day is celebrated annually on september ninth care. Bears are on a mission to spread carrying and sharing around the world and encouraged fans to spread carrying sharing. Love friendship acceptance. Fun happiness to those that you love everyday so it's got a good thing behind it. I i should note and went to the care. Bears website to go. Look all of this stuff up right and what's interesting about it. Is they have a kid section and they have an adult section now the adult section before you get frightened there. It's it's just so that you can buy care bears for your kids. But when i saw that. I kinda took it the wrong way you know. I thought maybe they're going to check my age or something. make sure i'm eighteen Before i access the special care bears don't know anyway. Yeah they they started out as a greeting cards right they. They basically were little characters inside of greeting cards and as with everything in the eighties. They were super commercialized. They each have their own personality. There was also books and candy and stickers close. I remember somebody coming to. School is probably in their school photo. with a care bear on there. I don't know why. I remember that but sweatshirt of a care bear. I think i remember 'cause i might have been laughing a little bit back. Then i don't know anyway They were basically repping their own. Little personas count like seven wars. And they were small. I guess kind of like the seven dwarfs. Maybe that's where they got the idea. I don't know why they did. Do movies The interesting one about their movies was the care. Bears movie to it featured a young girl who sold her soul to a shape shifting demon. That's a kids movie She did that so that she could be better at sports. And by the way. I should mention she was killed in the movie by the demon slayer bear. Okay i made that last part but that would have been a cool ending right. Yeah okay after the adult section remark and the demon bear thing. I don't think the care bears are going to be happy that i'm talking about today. Let's move on shall we. Let's move on to our historic events of the day and we start in seventeen ninety one washington. Dc the capital got its name. Yeah now okay. So washington dc actually would love to become a state by the way. Why well okay. Let's get into that. There's first of all. They're several hurdles that they're going to have to jump through before they can become a state now last year the house actually voted to allow dc to become a state. But that's as far as the got the okay the real question here is why do they want to become a state. Will currently congress essentially controls the local budget for them they also Give them very little say in just about anything and they have very little say in what the country does because yes they've got a congressional rep but that rep can't vote. Yeah it's a nonvoting rep. She can introduce bills and things like abbott. that's it. She can't actually vote on anything so their license plate there. They say taxation without representation so really. It's small area right. it's a city. How're you gonna turn the city into a state but if you think about this state would actually have more people in it than vermont and wyoming. So it's got about seven hundred thousand people and actually alaska only has seven hundred forty thousand people so it would be a pretty decent size as far as population goes. So what's the big deal. Why can't it just become a state will see they would get two senate seats Voting rights would happen in the house and that would perhaps shift control of both the house and the senate because dc is a blue area so it would be a blue state so therefore republicans are very happy about this whole thing. So the chances of this happening. I think it's pretty slim at least right now but if things change then perhaps we will see a difference in some point. Maybe they will get the statehood that they have been asking for for a really really long time. Speaking of statehood will california was admitted as a state on this day in eighteen fifty. Yeah california became the thirty first. Us state now. Let's you know whenever. I talk about a state becoming a state. I always like to give details about that particular state and this one. I actually live it. So i can tell you firsthand. What's going on here in california. Well there's forty million people in california and sometimes all of those people are on the freeway the same freeway in los angeles. Yeah we have five hundred faultlines here in california and that's why we're known for earthquakes. Four thousand seven hundred wineries and that's why we're known for wine. We've got movie studios national parks national forests out. I should say that many of those national forests are closed. Actually all of them are right. Now because of fire concerns so yeah. There's some bad things here in california. Like for instance. We're a big state which might give us political power. We've got that political power but.

I know off that. I've been having to look at and zoom here that plagued me. I know i thought you were really going to do that. But no of anything. I will say this. I tweeted out version of this. A bit of a joke form but like the the of running into a casual acquaintance is back in baby. It's powerful baby is having my veins it is infecting every cell of my body Absolutely that's the one interaction that i've never mastered you know very at parties just like small talk and just like i'm good with with obviously with friends. I'm very good but it's like the casual acquaintance. I hate that interact. that's interesting. You say that. Because i was going to say that what you said. You were good at parties. Purdue remember when we talked about how you didn't know how to leave a conversation at a party. I'm wondering a little bit of that is happening when you run into someone on the street. It's all that. I'm good at a party up until the very end of the conversation but like so a casual acquaintance all. I don't know how to get out of this river. There's too much you know what it is. It's all gray area right because when you see a casual when you see a friend on the street you stop right. There's there's no bones about it. Stopped myself and i'm like that's a phrase right anyway. The point is you stop and you talk to them but when it's a casual acquaintance you're doing this calculus. Everyone's doing everyone's doing that. Mean where the equations are going on the background of the yeah right That's what's happening with everyone and you're trying to figure out. Should i stop and talk to this person. And they're trying to figure out that and you're trying to figure out how long interaction is supposed to go on and it's too much gray area. Yup th- and that's i do not flourish in gray areas might absolately that i am aware of shoots through the roof. In grey areas. A bear market for my anxiety is bear good or not good but like as bear when the stock market is doing. Well i thought it was bull market. It's broiler bear. But i don't know which is which who knows. Well i don't know but i do know naomi. we have a fantastic fucking guest today on the show. of course. she's a wonderful to your friend. You've already heard her voice. Her dulcet tones. You may know her from her instagram. Show cooking with sid. Which is an unhinged wild ride. Where food is sometimes actually club but it is like so nice and this was very. It's funny because i'm always. I always assume the young black girls don't really like me like i'm very like old. Auntie energy them. And so. That's what i assume so. I'm always like i hope we can have a conversation but it was very very warm. It's always been very warm. Yeah i met her at when we did this show in the back of a bar in new york five years ago or something like that before we get into the show though I just wanted to read this. Wouldn't go to the store. You have gone when you are at the doctor right. You should have a condom when you're sitting on a park bench just like in naked gun one of the naked gun movies. He just wears a giant condom on his body. That's what you should be absolutely also. I felt nothing in all physically or emotionally the first time the entire time. Not for lack of trying a fund self ristic anthropological experience. Anyway fun anthropological voyeuristic anthropological experience. Well that's not sex. I don't know what is he was surprised. I was so calm about the whole thing. I'm going to keep trying with other people for variety but just wanted to send in the conclusion. And let you both know your interviewers and sweethearts thing only angel. That's nice very exciting. "See the face of the franchise, the number one person one hundred, and that would be the owner Dan Snyder step forward like Mark Cuban Day with the Dallas cowboys when they had incident is. Alleged incidents is brought forward. what the what the Dallas Mavericks. Mark Cuban came straight out and said you know what this the buck stops and starts with meet He put forward a plan to try to remedy the situation. We have yet to see anything like that. From Dan Snyder as far as this topic and many other topics come up on, come up with the Washington Washington franchise so. Like Adam Schefter said the NFL could could obviously step in finding the franchise, a bunch of money and take away draft picks to spend. You know dance, not a blood. Really if you have to if you have to wait on on our own outside. Source celebrities type of changes. Duchess speaks volumes for the type of organization that you run as a whole. We do now have sound from emily applegate one of the accusers. Let's get to that right now. I had a week. Maybe are so. That was great and I was like. Yes, this is exactly what I wanted. What was explained to me and this is going to be great and then you got your. I like. Screaming at you for something that you. It's not your fall, and then somebody makes a comment to you about what you're wearing, and they're just no-balls there and it really took. Most people know to comment on my appearance. Obviously, highly inappropriate behavior, going on within the redskins organization according to Emily applegate. I think you know as a woman I, think that most of us in sports would be hard pressed to say that we've never encountered something like this, but happy. It's coming to light, and hopefully something can be done, and I think right now. We're all waiting on. Dan Snyder the owner of the Washington Redskins to come out and make some sort of statement. If nothing else so gentlemen. We're going to talk more about the controversy in Washington coming up later on and I take. Hello, this is your apartment. I need some favors from you. Your keeps rubbing against the kitchen island and I can't return the favor. Can you give extra pets for me after that? Could you bundle your renters and car insurance with GEICO? We could save money and it's easy to do online and one last thing. Could you leave the TV on during the day I? Need to catch up on my soaps. For Bundling made easy go to GEICO DOT COM today. GEICO access to licensed agents, twenty, four seven, which means that Geico is always there for you. If only everyone was always there for you, like your mom when you fill out really really important paperwork on the first day of a new job name, check birthday social security thing. Hey, what is my social security number? Mom Mom? Let's. Zero zero one seven pump Gemini Hashtag. Always there for you with savings and twenty four seven access to licensed agents. And we continue with our look into the disturbing report out of Washington yesterday in which former fifteen former female employees of the redskins organization have accused members of the team's Front Office of sexual and verbal harassment. This a report published yesterday by The Washington Post. Now I want to welcome in senior. NFL writer at the undefeated Jason Read Jason. You worked at the Washington Post for three years, so I want to get your reaction to this entire controversy. That's happening in Washington now. Trolley! Not at all surprising to me, which is. Really very sad I mean during my time as a reporter on the team. I had been tipped off allegations about. Some of these some of these same things that the the Post reported on, and you know you do your reporting. You go to people you try to find out what's going on if people don't WanNa talk and if you can't obtain the information, move forward you, don't you? Go you go with reporting takes you where the reporting took. The Post reporters on this piece was very troubling places, and it's really just on acceptable that this is allowed. These situations have been allowed to continue as long as they have continued, and it very disappointing that the people in leadership did not do the things they needed to do to stop these things. And we touched on this in our last segment. Jason what's your reaction to the fact that Dan Snyder has yet to say a word about all this. Trolley that is simply unacceptable with when you're in a situation when you organization has been accused of sexual harassment by so many women in in this day and age that we're in for the person who's at the top of the leadership chart, not to have spoken yet. It's almost incomprehensible that this would be something that someone who is a good owner. A good leader would would allow to have happen now I get it. The team is has hired outside firm to look at their culture, but. With a story like this with this many accusations with this type of subject matter for the owner to have not addressed it coming up on twenty four hours later. No, that's just not good enough. Yeah I think that it's. Obviously hiring outside firm is important step to take, and I don't know specific any specifics about the law firm they hired. I'm sure they have integrity, but I think the fact remains that the Washington team will be the ones who are paying them so I wonder if there's any if you're hearing anything about the NFL hopefully change their position in hiring another firm independent, truly independent firm to do this investigation because I'm not sure how easy it is to come to honest conclusions when your paycheck is coming from the same place. Task Investigate. Dom Great Point I. Mean in this situation. What's most needed is complete transparency. What's most needed as a situation where no one can doubt what's going on? And this is not the cast aspersions on the law firm hired you. I don't know that that what the background is in terms of hey, what any connections there might be with anyone in the organization, but the reality of it is the NFL has to do its own independent investigation now the league without a statement saying that it would wait. So after that investigation was to decide what I wanted to do, in terms of potentially moving forward, but to me in the climate, we're in in the era that we're in with all this transformative change going on around the country posts me too movement I do not see how the NFL can let one. The investigation stand that the team is paying for. A Jason I know in Washington Post article I talked about you know the protocols, or you know how. These these different instances were being reported, and he talked about a lack of an HR arment with the Washington redskins. Only one person was considered hr for the entire building I. Mean You talk about that? You earn any specifics about how these. These alleged incidents incidents being reported within the building. Well. Listen when when when you cover the when you cover this organization, you understand that things happened there that don't necessarily happen throughout the NFL and this is something that we we had heard about for years about essentially as mom and pop mentality, not hiring to have departments fully staff, not paying people you know at at wages. We say okay that you're going to retain top talent, so it's not at all surprising when I read that in the store. Okay, well, yeah. Yeah, because that's the way they do things there. You can't really talk about having good corporate culture when you have that. Many employees pointed to one HR person, and that person is simply overwhelmed, and on top of it, my man, you have a situation where the people who have problems don't feel the climate exists in which they can truly voice. What's going on? I mean the only.

That seems like a female name. Pedro Pedro okay. Well, that's you off. Anyhow my bad definitely screwed that up and I'm definitely going to. End of that. Are. We'll get to your more your dispatches in just a moment here. I'm sure everybody's heard of this by now. Fritz follows sports probably closer than the rest of US show just based on. All the drama from the redskins stuff spills out way past anybody who's just a fan of sports casually or otherwise and the Redskins, the Washington team that has had that name since the nineteen thirties is ditching the name officially and ditching the logo, and we're coming out with their announcement, and there's some weird twists and turns around this first of all. Let me see if I bring this up. Give me just a second in when I get all full screen it just so you don't have to yell at me. But I liked this little tidbit here. This is Dan Snyder is the guy who owns the Washington Redskins, and this was in two thousand and one I believe. Him talking about the Redskins and the Redskins name. Let's see here missy. And I think from a bottom line perspective what it means is tradition. What it means is competitiveness. What it means is honor. It is not meant derogatory and two thousand and one way is. To be able to get a podium and speak. From the standpoint of what it means to every fan, and that doesn't make a difference. What what the fan? It's religion race. What what have you it is? It means the same thing it means. tradition means greatness. It means fighting for the redskins fighting for Washington DC. I think it'd be getting. You say one we're. We're never GONNA change aimed Washington redskins. Yeah, well, maybe you are. Though maybe you are because now nineteen years later. The name is going to be changed. It's officially dropped. The logos officially dropped, but I love this part of the story. I absolutely love this and I think somebody who listens to show email this link and he said My. My brother posted the story, so I was checking it out and I, said we. It is Kinda strange why they're not. They're not announcing the new name at the press conference where they announced they're ditching the name. And then this story uncovers. Why Will Brinson says? Why don't the Redskins have? A new nickname planned yet? Probably because some realtor in Alexandria beat them to the punch and trademarked. Possible new redskins nickname. This guy trademarked. The here's the list of he just trademark of the Washington. Red Wolves which they've been talking about Washington tribe, The Washington Red Tails The Washington. Monument The Washington veterans, The Washington renegades gridiron football, genius, for what, though so he could grab them all own the trademarks, and then the redskins couldn't use. By them, or they have to buy them from Ham. Different when it comes to different brands like you take your Dr Dre. That's a guy. No and Dr Drives. The rapper tried to you know have him. Stop using that name because it was two different. But he can register registered for football for for sports us. He will registered all the trademarks that were. The ones that they would probably pick in this one realtor dude now owns this and the redskins are trying to fight it out with them because they're definitely going to be picking. One of those and the odds are that they're gonNA. Go without of the Washington Red Wolves The Washington red tails or the Washington warriors are the three biggest probabilities that I've heard about and then some. Warriors on this list Not on this one, but that's one of the names. It's bouncing around. are a little out there like. Washington veterans. I can't see a football team. Well, the veteran how about they own Washington freedom fighters? Weiss weird name for for football t Washington red tailed hawks of my absolute favorite and I think that the Washington redskins should switch to this somebody trademark to the Washington redskins. The Washington redskins. We'll be fantastic, so this guy. He signed him. It's like this guy got to get in before the Redskins and try and trademark name. He thinks they're gonNA use and maybe get some money out of them, but also throw in a couple jokes because it's going to get noticed. He said Philip. Macauley is his name and he lives in Alexandria. Virginia is no claim is made the exclusive right to use Washington apart from the mark as shown in the service mark, so this guy has grabbed all of these creating some problems with. The Washington redskins and it's A. It's actually a different guy. 'cause there's a couple of people that were doing this Raymond. Lucci was the guy who got the Washington redskins trademark, which is just fantastic, and we'll figure out exactly what they end up with when the Washington redskins go for all the way, and actually announced that new name, but that's that they said never to do it or never ever ever going to change the name. The changing the name and it is now happening. Here's insecure Walrus with the dispatch. He's talking about that whole wayfair conspiracy. We're bringing up which is so weird when I first saw the conspiracy theory, start rolling out about wayfair. It occurred to me up. Way is a lot like Amazon. In the fact that they sell third party items, so there's things that are sold through wayfair. That aren't their own item. It's maybe the transactions handled by them, and it never occurred to me that there might be missing person in a cabinet. It just seems like a really great way to money. Launder something. If you buy an item that shouldn't cost fifteen thousand dollars for fifteen thousand dollars bright. It looks on all business transactions receipts all that. Just like you bought a really expensive cabinet, so that was kind of what I thought about was that it would be possible. I would think on Amazon. Someplace like wayfair to set up selling really expensive things legally through a system like this. So that was the thing that perplexed me. The most was that it seemed like it was more like money. Laundering. way to cover up could be paying for things, so I never thought. Somebody in a cabinet seemed like it was a cover story for the. The money, yeah, I don't know. I mean maybe that's why. wayfair fares being cagey about it because there is something up with those kind.

"Do with military defense connection in some way shape or form I know and I feel confident in saying that that is the name if they were ever going to change it that he would have preferred. You remember that there there. This is going to be a very. Sensitive Deliberate process of going about figuring out what the new names should be should take two years to come up with it. From everything that's been reported. It appears as if basically it's him and him maybe a little bit, maybe a little bit of Ole Ron and Ron's opinion, mixed in with it as well. And it, probably it probably going to happen before it started the season. Yeah I mean it's it's hard. You know I think about logistically what you have to do to swap out one brand with another within a few months or within a few weeks. You know it's not easy because it's everywhere, you know it's in the stadium. It's in your place. It's it's an all of your marketing materials. It's it's everywhere. The NFL. Has It everywhere Amazon isn't going to have it anywhere anymore. They're taking down all their merchandise that with with redskins on it, but apparently now I think I think golf mentioned this this morning? They still what's the? What's the Old Indians logo Wadden yeah, I think they still sell chief Wahoo stuff on Amazon, so they haven't taken that down, but but it's about getting after the redskins right now. This is this is front and center, and you know that Amazon owner. If the if the current owner ever does sell that the leading that's the leader in the clubhouse in terms of buyer, cacique could write a four billion dollar check and not even sneeze. Anyway I I'm still hearing that. Snyder has wanted all along warriors. But. I'm sure a lot more. Thought is going into this and I'm sure the League might have some say in this as well. I I'll be honest, I don't care. Where you're. A. Red Tail sounds fine redhawks. To have the least complicated name that they think that they can market. You know I don't know what that is either. Some. People think it should be Washington FC Washington football clubs. You know what that's what they should do in the short term until they come up with a name. That could be the holding name. Aunt seriously FC Washington like team. It would be unique. No other NFL team would have it I I you know. What has somebody suggested that for real? I, I've read it a lot on social media I. Think I actually think that's a really smart thing. Don't rush into this. Don't be impulsive. You've got time you call a swap. Everything out and just call Washington FC right now. Tell everybody to call FC Washington or Washington FC by the way the C. for those non soccer people out there football club Washington FC that out there and say we're gonNA. Take our time on the name. We're not going to rush. We're not going to be rushed into this. We're going to do this right. and will in the process of you know calling US Washington FC You can you know we'll be taking down. All of the redskins related stuff you know by the way would be to different marketing opportunities the interim all the Washington FC stuff that they could sell and then the new name when they get to it before the twenty one season. Yes, it would to two different opportunities different names.

"W. M. A. L. Washington comes to talk it is the Saturday morning update on WMAL I recall this is the author of the coming collapse of China in his latest book with the great U. S. China tech war Gordon good morning it's great to have you with us so thank you so much for I've been following you on Twitter at Gordon G. Chang and you've written a lot about actions taken by both China and the U. S. recently China receiving very harsh words from secretary of state Pompeii this weekend and that sort of multiple fronts here and I think first off on the corona virus the the secretary of state very concerned about the cooperation with China on the whole coronavirus problem yeah he is concerned about the non cooperation from China from the very beginning and we're talking first week of January China has rebuffed attempts some United States to offer assistance and that occurred of course this week the problem that is I think upper most in people's mind is what is going on in that institute in Wuhan the Wuhan institute of virology where they were storing more than fifteen hundred strains of corona virus and others are concerned that there was biological weapons research and also just said not interference to safety protocols and that's why this virus in all probability this epidemic started because of virus accidentally escape from the slab we had western scientists have been at that lab what we know about that yeah in two thousand eighteen the state department sent investigative teams and they came away alarm there was a failure to adhere to safety protocols and procedures on that day at the time warned that there could be a pandemic from a sars like virus sources the two thousand to two thousand three epidemic also caused by a coronavirus and that's exactly what happened here there's a lot of science that says that this disease did not start at the wet market in more on which is a narrative that Beijing has been propagating and re read the reason for that is that many of the initial cases of corona virus had no contact with that wet market well they didn't have a contact with the wet market there's really only one other suspect and that is this move on institute of neurology lot of question marks about the death toll in China and whether we believe what Chinese government officials are saying did you have a sense of the magnitude that we may not know about the Chinese reporting about forty six hundred deaths there and that seems to be abnormally low people are talking about perhaps forty to forty nine thousand deaths on the loan what is striking is that this disease looks very different in China contagious miss please Alex and it does everywhere else in the world so either this is both behaves differently inside China's borders or Beijing is just out and out lying I think most people have decided that there's a lot of shipping going on in the Chinese capital when it comes to these infections and death numbers reports this week Gordon that China will give the World Health Organization an additional thirty million dollars after the US freezes funding want to get your assessment of the relationship of China to the World Health Organization in general it looks like Beijing owns the WHL and it's not because they give a lot of money they give journalists forty million dollars a year with this thirty million is going to be seventy but the US contributions are in the four hundred to five hundred million dollar a year range and on the top of that the gates foundation gives more to the WHL so this is not an issue of money buying influence I think it's because China has spent a lot of resources in getting Dr Tedros the director general of the WHL elected I'm Terry gross was a leftist anyway but China put its full weight behind him and because of that I think Ted rose has decided that he is just going to further every narrative that Beijing wants Gordon there's a lot of information coming out of South Korea about the condition of the north Korean leader Kim Jong un what do we know in terms of his health at this point we suspect that there was some health emergencies sometime after April eleventh and the reason is that Kim was a no show on April fifteenth which is the most important day in the north Korean calendar it's the day of the sun which commemorates the birth of Kim il sung the founder of the regime and the grandfather of the current ruler Kim Jong un many people have been talking about cardiac arrest some people talk about other elements but he hasn't been seen there are reports from Reuters team of Chinese doctors have gone to see Kim Jong un now it could be bring death which was reported by one of the major news organizations or it could be nothing more serious than Corbett nineteen or maybe something wrong with his legs and some people said but until he shows up people are going to talk about this if he were to pass away what would you see in terms of the new leadership in North Korea my guess is that there will be a Kim family member at the top of this and the reason is that the regime needs the legitimacy of the Pictou bloodline as they call it from now the Kim family member may be nothing more than a figure head but clearly there needs to be at least one and people are focusing on Kim's younger sister Kim yo Jong she was considered to be the most capable of the children of Kim Jong il which she did not become a leader in two thousand eleven when her father had a heart attack and the reason is because she's a female and in the Confucian society like North Korea she was considered to be ineligible but now because there's so much stress on the regime I think anything is possible and she could emerge as at least the region and maybe even the power herself Gordon Chang as always thank you very much and you can follow Gordon's tweets over the weekend at Gordon G. Chang on Twitter very much appreciated garden thank you very much for it fifty seven this is the Saturday morning update on WMAL the seven o'clock.

You Witherspoon are both founding members of times up which is the organization in responding to the METOO movement working on gender equality working against sexual harassment and You Played Anita Hill in the HBO. Movie confirmation. You're probably a teenager during the Clarence Thomas hearings. So I don't know how closely you followed what was happening but playing her and having to do the research about what happened. What we're one or two of the things that you found just like most disturbing about how she was treated and how hearings are handled. Why remember really distinctly when the hearings happened because it was one of the first times that I really saw. My parents disagree on a social political issue. They usually my parents were really in agreement Around issues having to do with money or politics or black identity. But because of intersection analogy This was a moment where I watched my mom. And Dad processes experience very differently as a black woman and a black man And it was disturbing to me And and I and I'll never forget it. It really made me question who was in the right and I think any the hell is such a hero and I wanted to be able to explore for both characters for both Clarence Thomas. Anita Hill what was at stake for them and what. It costs them And in particular. Because Clarence Thomas I think is often perceived as the winner in that situation because he got to have his seat on the Supreme Court but Anita Hill transformed society. She changed the shape of Congress and gave us language for sexual harassment. Really transformed our cultural practices in this country and so I wanted to be able to to shine a light on that as well. What did you learn about your appearance? Hearing them disagree about Clarence Thomas and Anita Hill. And I'm assuming your father defended Clarence Thomas and that your mother was on a hillside. Yeah I think my dad and I really I when I look back I understand. My Dad was devastated. That this black man who was going to you know sit on the highest court in the land was being raked through the mud and he felt that Anita Hill should have had more loyalty to the black community that this was bad for black people black people as a whole. I must say that my dad is now not of that opinion That my dad has has grown in his feminist ideology. Through the years. I would be remiss to not say that My Dad is is is pretty amazing person But he was the product of his time and felt the way a lot of black men did at the time and my mom believed Anita Hill. And so I think it was one of the first moments that I realized the unique challenges of being a black woman my impression watching Anita Hill during the hearings is that she was trying so hard not to show any emotion to just GonNa give the facts answer the questions and remain as firm but as emotionally neutral as possible. Did you feel that way too? Did you try to play her? That way yeah I mean I I could probably recite the hearings to you now. I watched them so much and I tried to approach playing her with the influence of Anna deavere Smith like I really tried to watch the video and listen to the audio and and capture the cadence and the rhythm of Anita Hill and I tried to figure out what I could learn about her personality from the placement of the way that she was speaking to those senators and even in her everyday life. But it's so very different from how I speak and that that difference is reflective of who she is so it was really fun to kind of work in that way and and wrap my head around her using her voice and her posture and her walk in sort of an outside in approach to the character. She had very good posture. She actually. She did have very good posture but she also has a little. I won't call it a slump because she's far to graceland elegant to call it a slump but she protects her heart when she sits and so. There's a slight curvature to her shoulders and the way that she protects her heart And and doesn't let people have access to her her inner most heartfelt feelings and identity I love the way you've turned her her her body her posture into a metaphor. We'll it is. I mean you really you know you know you can study Alexander Technique. You know for how people move in. The world says a lot about who they are. I used to go to rehearsals for scandal in sweatpants and a sweatshirt but I could not do the scene unless I had the shoes high heel shoes on four inch heels because Libya pope had a walk and she had a posture and she had a stance and I couldn't rehearse a scene in flip flops or sneakers even when I was nine months pregnant playing. I'M GONNA Pope. I was in four inch heels sometimes wedges but I still had to have that he'll because that that extra height and not extra lean forward and that extra tightness in the belly and the core that a he'll requires that's part of the steeliness of WHO Livia Pope is so I always say I don't know who character is until I know what shoes they're wearing until I figure out the walk until I figure out how they stand. You know one of the things you try to do is to be of service in the causes that your act have been a now with the with the virus one of the things that you did in conjunction with the World Health Organization and global citizen as you did Acuna with California's Surgeon General Nadine Burke Harris and you ask for questions from I guess that was through Instagram. That you asked for questions and you posed the questions to her and she answered and in the this like eight minute. Qna that you had with her. You said one of the questions that you were really surprised that you were asked that you had to ask. It was the question is the virus affecting black people and black people. Get the virus What did it say to you that people were wondering about that way? I think the landscape has changed dramatically. Since then we've had a lot a few days ago. Yeah Yeah We. We've had a lot more. Black people be impacted and affected by the virus. But I think at the time it speaks to kind of how separate our communities remain in this country and I thought thought you might say that. Yeah there's a huge gap between worlds and a lot of ways that we don't we don't always if we watch the news and we don't see somebody who looks exactly like us. We don't necessarily think that it has to do with us. I want to preface question by mid knowledge ing something. I know you'd want to acknowledge that. You're you're very lucky right now in the sense that like you don't have to worry about employment or having enough money to pay rent or get food or you know you're covered on all those things but that doesn't mean that you're not worried it doesn't mean you're not worried about your children and your and your husband and that it's just not you know really radically changing your life. So how are you keeping your spirits up if you are And I think I'm keeping my spirits up with a lot of prayer and I am doing some meditation. Which is something I always want to be doing and buy some meditation. I mean three minutes a day but I am setting my timer and doing three minutes of meditation before running downstairs and And really trying to be honest with the people that I that are safe to be honest with about What I'm feeling and what my struggles are and how I can do better for myself and my family and for society and When I hear about loss you know people friends and loved ones of friends that are sick and dying To try to just continue to express love and support and stay connected to each other. It's it's a really scary time. I've been trying to figure out how to not ignore my fear but also practice acts of faith In order to engender more faith than just kind of hold onto that space for myself and my family and my loved ones and and people like to share my day with like you. Oh Carrie Washington. You have really brightened my day. I thank you so much for this interview and I wish you and your family and everyone you care about a good health during this crisis likewise likewise thank you thank you for innovating And evolving your own set up so that we don't have to lose this amazing show. "N. A. L. Washington comes to talk I'm not I should be very pleased about this maybe I will be we have millions of millions of listeners this program has more listeners than any cable news show has viewers so it's fairly significant in any given week tens and tens of millions of listeners when I am and FM on satellite on the podcast on the mark Levin at the I heart radio app streaming on all these devices and so forth and you now have people who were never concerned about the economy today and tonight talking about the economy why because of my appearance on Hannity last why because of my persistence and insistence that this is a key issue behind this microphone for a month a month maybe more the same thing with the models I was the first to challenge the models I was looking at other scholarship reading with these other experts were sent you know it takes some brass to do it because you know you're going to be attacked which of course I was gonna the models that's what others are talking about the models the radio and TV this is a good thing so I should be pleased about that I think all right let's move on there's a great piece by Eli lake on the issue I'm about to discuss is a great piece by David Harsanyi the great writer and by others but let me let me just hit hit her sunnies piece I linked to to realize peace earlier in the day when ninety six percent of spy warrants reviewed contained serious errors or omissions that's whole scale fraud not a few little slip ups what's he talking about consider this scenario writes a federal lawyer is filling out applications requesting FISA warrants to spy on American citizens who work for major presidential campaign to determine whether the campaign staffers are collaborating with a foreign power to steal the presidency of the United States they must know that such a conspiracy should be exposed would be the most explosive in the history of the nation towering over the piddling criminality Watergate or the teapot dome scandal in any genuine effort to ferret out criminality and sedition within one of the nation's major parties perhaps going as high as the future president himself will be supported by unimpeachable underlying evidence undertaken with abundant care meticulous oversight so what are the chances that a good faith investigation would botch nearly every request to spy on the campaign when the FISA court is already signing off on over ninety six percent of applications what are the chances that the FISA applications of a good faith investigation would be riddled with errors and rely on quote misleading inaccurate on quote information based on a a fabulous document paid for by the opposing political party because he's talking about what was done to president trump you would think that this kind of potential abuse by the justice department would pique the interest of mainstream journalists no such luck in December and December inspector general Michael Horowitz the department of justice found that the FBI had included quote at least seventeen significant errors or omissions in the Carter page FISA applications and many errors in the woods procedures.

M. A. M. Washington small W. M. A. L. where Washington comes to talk I totally want to be that girl in a romantic comedy like you know the girl who ends up I'll happily ever after and it was so easy so when I am on a dating app and make sure I come off slightly quirky but also totally cute and sexy all at once and then bring on the big teeth at first I'm interested but wait suddenly I act so hard to get finally when a guy suggest meeting up I don't respond got to make them work right look unless he shows up at my airport gate with a calypso band he's not the right one anyway the truth about most people who meet on dating sites is that you never meet them at all want to meet someone who actually wants to go on.
