Many of the things that Gavin Newsom did had nothing. Whatever to do with science. You've heard me interview small business owners who said he imposed lockdowns and mandates and then Loosened, um and then re impose them and then loosen them to nobody knew. What the hell do The science suggested that schools could have remained open. We already have a situation where 75% of black kids in California cannot read at state levels of proficiency. Nearly half of all kids in California cannot read at state. Levels of proficiency, and yet schools were shut down for a full year. The left is always talking about leveling the playing field, making sure that things are equal how in the world you're gonna get equal when you have prevented Black kids. Hispanic kids. Shooting victims up 50% in L. A Burglary victims up 50% in the Bay Area. And what does he do? He goes to the French laundry. With lobbyists. This man has got to go. And then beyond that, this is a state California with all these brilliant people, all these people and Silicon Valley And we have rolling blackouts brownouts because they can't keep the power on. This is city right next to the Pacific Ocean. And we're running out of water. We can't figure out how to keep water from running off into the ocean. We can't figure out how to install desalination plants. Are you kidding me? And don't get me started on the finances. Well, Larry, there's a surplus really. Surpluses, half what he said It is, and a surplus simply means the state took in more money that particular year than they spent have nothing to do with how much they spent and why they spent it. And you think maybe just maybe when you got a surplus, your overtaxing people ever think about that. 13.3% state income tax, highest in the nation. And by the way, roughly 50% of the state's budget comes out of the state income tax. Now, 1%. Not a typo. Not a joke, man. Not a joke. 1%. You know the thing 1%. Households in California account for 50% of the state income taxes, which, as I said, is 50% of the overall state budget. So So you met with the rich people. Stock market goes down. With the recession. And the state. Automatically begins to hemorrhage money because Let's face it. When you depend on that tiny group of people who are mobile They can leave. "This is NPR news, and I'm Cherry Glaser or this KCRW News Update. It's been four years now, since voters in the city of L. A approved Proposition H H H. That's a billion dollar bond to help create 10,000 new homeless housing units over a decade. So far, though, only 489 units have opened with cause typically running at more than half a million dollars each. That's according to an update provided to the City Council. He's here. W Zana Scout reports that officials disagree on what to make of those numbers. One thing city officials agree on is they like to see these projects move faster at the current pace. The city won't meet its overall goal of 10,000 units until the end of 2024. When it comes to costs. City Council member Mitch O'Farrell argued that the city is only chipping in a fraction of the total budgets for these projects and that a lot of the expenses are unavoidable. He even criticized a prop H H H audit by city controller Ron Galperin that highlighted the per unit costs, saying it's sewed distrust and did the entire program a great disservice. Council member Kevin Daily own had a different take. It's still far too expensive. It's far too costly. It remains to be seen what next steps city officials will take to speed up or cut costs for this badly needed housing. The city of L. A has set aside a fraction of HH H phones for what they call an innovation challenge, which grants money to developers who come up with faster, cheaper projects. You're listening to KCRW. Support.

"I'm so glad that when we spoke with David Lazarus, the business columnist at the L. A Times Award winning business columnist of the L, A Times specializing in consumer affairs, I'm so glad that he started by saying That the stock market is not the economy. The stock market doesn't reflect the economy. It's something that you know, I know that but it's still every time I see that there's something horrible going on in the country, like with Cove in 19 when people were suffering such hideous Unemployment figures that the stock market would just all of a sudden start climb, climb, climbing and have massive games during the day, and it's it would stunned me. I would wonder why why in the world is that taking place of the stock market is not something that I have a great deal of understanding nor appreciation for, and the only way that I'm invested in the stock market is through my retirement plan. That's the only way that I have those kinds of investments. But I'll tell you something that's going on in schools they're learning about the stock market is happening in high schools. Two of my kids right now you know what it might be all three of them right now. They're in Seekonk Lasses economics classes. I didn't know that they were going to be doing this. But the stock market is a big part of what it is. They're studying, and they even make fake investments. Said. There's a certain amount of money that each student starts out with. It's not real money, of course, but there's a certain amount of money. Each student starts out with, and they are able to choose whatever stocks they want to. That that money will be invested in and it could all go into one stock. It could be diversified. It could go into various stocks. I asked if they're investing in commodities, and they said not yet. They haven't really learned about commodities. But they're doing that. And it is kind of funny because one of my kids, Addie, who's just broke. I mean, all my kids are super smart. But you know Esso Addie, who is so good at things like mathematics, it just comes naturally to her. She almost every day comes home and says, well, I'm second to the bottom of the class on my investments or well, I'm totally losing the kid who's doing the best as I understand. It is a girl who invested in, etc. Apparently etc. Just keeps going up and up and up and up Now my son was losing his shirt for a while, but all of a sudden he's turned around, and I wish I could tell you what stocks he's investing in. My point is just I'm so glad that they're learning at least how this works. No, I'm leaving a minute early. I'm sorry. Yeah, I'm glad they're learning how this works because I don't really understand it now do I want them to invest in stocks? You know, I'd rather they invest in real estate because it seems to me that real estate is one of those things that is always secure. You're always going to have the land. You're always going to have the real estate. It's like Scarlett O'Hara, his father said, and gone with the wind. It's the land's Katie Scarlett O'Hara, and it is land.

Thank you for having me a year ago. Um Awful awful day. Do you remember where you were when you heard the news? Do? Of course I do. It was an extremely tough day. I actually was in the middle of a tournament with my young girls I coach club as well. So we were part of a tournament at Sierra Canyon, and I was actually out picking up lunch for our team and the coaches. And on my way back. I received a call and they tell me what happened and I just have to pull over. I had to park. It was extremely tough. Then, after about 30 minutes, I resumed my drive to the gym. And when I got there, walking into the gym, it was just a complete different environment. You can feel the tension in the air. You can feel the sadness right? Because you have There were games going on. And I actually had a championship game plan that same day in like an hour after receiving the news, So it was It was tough to say the least. But you know it was. It was my girls that really got me through. You know, they sent one of my girls sent me a text and she said coach I'm excited that we have this game. You know, I'm ready to play with the mamba mentality. And when I When I read that I was like, Wow, I can't be said you know, I have to be there for these girls. They inspired me. I inspire them. And we proceeded actually tow win the championship that day, So it was actually really great. And, yeah, In basketball. Basketball coach is obviously very important to you, your player yourself. When did you realize you wanted to coach and and why youth leagues. Right, well My plate, community, college basketball and on one of my teams, they would nicknamed me Coach Net because I was just always very verbal on the court, And as of then it just stuck with me. And I had a mentor who Really taught me how to interact with kids and really show me my passion because ever from a young age, I've always been very empathetic, and I've always been quick to develop relationships with the youth. S so from that point on I had my first job coaching club and that one swell. Then I got another job coaching middle school and then I just kept going from there and as through my years and through the experiences that I went through I learned that it was a passion of mine, and I learned that I was really great at what I did. So that's that's why I've stuck with it. You've been a coach in the Mamba League as I mentioned earlier. This is this eight week program in L. I have to so Once I did that, it was an extremely extremely great experience. Did you ever meet Kobe himself? Yes. Yes, I did. I met Kobe. What will I be doing? Well, I ever get the chance to And I knew when I did the mom believed I knew I felt it in my bones that through this experience, I was going to be able to meet him and it wasn't until the very last day basically of the Mamba League. That's the last tournament of champions, Basically where I was able to bring my team because we had won first place within our league, so we won first place within our league. We were then invited to this tournament. Where he was a surprise guest. So he showed up and I wasn't expecting it. But I was like, Yes, this is it. This is it like and I saw him in person, and I saw an opportunity for me to just kind of cross the lines and walk next to him. So I actually did that because the coaches weren't necessarily allowed toe, you know, interact with him, But I saw my opportunity. I had a polo. You know, I had my mom believe Polo on I looked official. And it's all about confidence. Right? You have to walk her part. Yeah. So I saw my I saw my path directly to him and I took it. I walked confidently past everyone, And as I approached him, I was just like I interact with him and I said, Oh, my God. Like Kobe. My name's Natalie. I just wanted to tell you.

"Times. Some kids are thriving, doing better than anybody expected because the schools are closed. That's right. My friends. He's screwed. Children are feeling less stress. They're getting better grades. They're happy. They're productive now that they don't have to go to school. Some of these kids say that they aren't tired anymore. They don't have bouts of hunger during the day. They don't worry about being bullied their well fed their energetic. They're loving life ever since they have been able to attend their classes online, which they don't really do, rather than at their oppressive schools. Not all students feel that way. The kids who live in noisy homes or whose families are suffering hardships or illness because of the virus pandemic. Well, they're not doing so well. But for the kids, the L A Times reported on man, Old man. Life is good. So maybe it's time to re evaluate everything, folks. What are we doing to our Children? Why should Americans precious, fragile, sensitive kids ever be forced to go back to school? It's too stressful. The grades suffer. They're tired. They're hungry. They're bully their miserable They never win. We should close him. That's what we should do. We should close the schools most of many way forever. We should do it. We must do it in order to save the Children. Think of the billions of taxpayer dollars. Actually, no, they would still charge of the tax revenue so, but we still should close the schools makes all the sense in the world, right? Last year, there was a victim of identity theft.

"Every region of the state is now offering vaccinations to people 65 older. It's a big group around six million people, including well over a million in L. A county alone, and that's on top of health care workers and people in nursing homes still getting shot. Based on the number of vaccines that California has been receiving each week. State epidemiologist Dr Erica Pan says it will take 4 to 5 months to get shots to everyone 65 older. She made those comments during a vaccine advisory committee meeting this week. That means if you're younger than 65, you could be waiting until this summer to be eligible that timeline could change. State officials say they're counting on the Biden administration to speed up vaccination distribution. But for the time being, Pan says, we can expect a slow roll out right now. The state says California is getting 400,000 to 500,000 doses of vaccine a week. Many of those doses air going to people who are getting their second shots. Restaurants and bars have been hit hard during the pandemic. Many have gone out of business and more are expected to close their doors for good before the economy can get up and running again. One thing that could help the viability of new restaurants is doing away with all the red tape involving permitting and the L. A City Council says plans to do that are in the works. Mama Holmes is with Peter L. A and has been keeping an eye on what officials are planning. What they're doing is just asking for just city departments to just take a look and just make some recommendations and that also includes streamlining the Sidewalk dining permit process. The Allies City Council is looking to to do this in several ways. They want the fire department to streamline the process around outdoor tents. Canopies, awnings all of these things that were previously very pricey. And would take a long time for approval. The goal is to keep the changes in place even after outdoor dining restrictions related to covert are left it President Biden is making the fight against climate change a major part of his agenda. Just 24 hours in office, he issued some executive orders, including one that has the U. S rejoining the Paris climate agreement. He also says California and a few other states have not done a great job of meeting air quality standards. Sara Horowitz with the U. C L. A School of law says some parts of California have saw the most polluted air in the country. It will be a mystery to folks who live in certain regions of California, especially the Central Valley, that our air quality continues to be pretty bad for a lot of the year. And so what this says to me is that the you know the bite administration's paying attention. She says This is a message for the state to improve its air quality. "Lose today. This damn, There's really no revolutionary thought in this, But I'm gonna bring to the forefront something that Believe every single one of us take for granted on a daily basis. I was in Joe's market last night, buying some actually, eggs and milk, and I got to thinking You know how fortunate we are and central Nebraska. On January the 14th to have a beautiful Case a produce. And eggs and milk, and I got to thinking You know it wasn't that long ago in this country. That you only had food available on a seasonal basis. And I think that you could have eggs. Something like an egg that is so fragile. And yet you open that 18 Pack carton. Actually, I did have one that had a crack in it. And how rare is that? How many miles did that egg that carton of eggs, travel? And yet they're safe. They're clean and rarely do they have a claque. Let's Uh, that's a bit of a Freudian slip an egg with a clock. If it's clacking, you might be too late and eating it. That's just what I'm saying. A crack. Details at Long Creek, Cavaco and Dad calm So while we as American consumers a reap the rewards of food availability 365 days a year and it's healthy, it's safe. There's no other country that has the record that we do. I don't want us to take that for granted. You know, there are some people that want to cast a negative doubt on food miles. And if that food has traveled miles too many miles, you should only eat local We cannot grow vegetables efficiently in large volume. He could have a greenhouse, but you're not going to do that. In large volume year round. We have 80% of the nation's vegetables grown in the Salinas Valley in California, and we can efficiently and very cost effectively transfer Those vegetables all around the country reminds me of the day that I was just outside of L. A. And I went into a strawberry field where they were harvesting, slicing the tips off putting them in a package right in the field. They would go to L A X that night be put on a plane that night and be on a table somewhere in New York City the next day by noon. People say, Oh, my goodness. That's so many food miles. It's no food miles because the plane was flying. Anyway. It was carrying a people and just because it carried food as well. Reminds us that we should be very appreciative of the number of efficient food miles. Our food travels and is still in fantastic condition..

"Just reach over and get that. Wanted toe really remind you of something we talked about in the In the first R, and that's the podcast Now, if from time to time, an affiliate of around the house and you, Norman, listen on runs some kind of a sporting event college or Or or pro sports on we get preempted. Usually it's not both ours just one hour, usually the second hour. If that's the case, then make sure you know how to get ahold of the podcast because you can always listen to the program that way and get the whole thing. So the podcaster available through the I Heart radio site, which is reachable through my website, which is around the house dot com. There's a little set of earphones there. You click on those Listen to podcasts. He'll take it to the I heart site and they're old news around the house right there and ready to go. And you can listen to show by show segment by segment going back, I think The last time I checked, Maybe the 2017 so podcasts are there in Jesse Thomas will put up the podcast sometime this evening of today's program. Let's see what we got here. Uh, this is from looking for this week's email. This is from Dean. Pretty good question for you Talk about recirculating hot water pumps. I've looked at a few and wonder what you recommend our water heaters, 40 ft or so from our From our washing machine. Yeah, I wouldn't know if it's the washing machine. You know You're going to run water in there no matter what you do, And I'm not sure I would do this just for the washing machine. I think it's more applicable to bathrooms that are along. Maybe if you have a bathroom that Near your washing machine. It's 40 ft. Away. Let's talk about a pump, but it was just the washing machine. You're not really interested in hot water coming a little later into the washing machine because it will ultimately get there. We're more worried about getting hot water to a bathroom each and every day and night. When you shower and use the lavatory washing machines aren't used as often as bathrooms. So you might. If it's washing machine, only I might not spend the money. However, if you want to get hot water to the far end of the house, washing machine and bathrooms included. There's there's all kinds of pumps online. The basic premise. Is that you? You pull hot water down one pipe and send it back to through the through the other pride through the cold water pipe round and round. Set up a conviction. Luke from the water heater, so the hot water is right there. Many of these pumps come with a little timer in them. Ah, little, you know, like a little timer that you said to come on before you get up in the morning and And go off when you go to work, so the pump isn't running 24 7. They could go you can find these online auto Cirque laying is another brand L A and G. Grundig has examples of these. There's all kinds of pumps and they're usually a couple 100 bucks. 200 maybe up to $250. So, uh, that's what I recommend A circulation pump. Now the most efficient way to do this is the had a third pipe. This isn't always possible in an existing home. You have to have a third pipe from the bottom of the water heater to that far away bathroom so that the water can return and set up that loot. Now, if you don't have that There's another system and isn't quite as good. Feedback I've gotten is, you know not. It's not a It's not as efficient as a three pipe system, and this is to pull hot water down the hot water pipe and shove it back down the cold water pipe in that bathroom. This is if you can't get underneath. Put that third pipe in the three pipe system is best, but they're the auto certain pump A U T O C I r C works nicely with just a two pipe system. On little again. Kick on you plug it in. I have to get a little power under your bathroom lavatory. Plug it in and set it to come on. Just before you get up in the morning. I'll have instant hot water right there at for the shower. Or the lavatory in your bathroom. So if you could do it, a three pipe system is best If you can get underneath the house, if not the auto search system, and, uh well, take this next break. I look, there's a couple of the brands. I Not remembering right now that I look up when we take the break, so If you want to circulate hot water around, That's good thing. You don't waste nearly as much water. This is especially applicable in ranch style homes where they're where they're very, you know, long, long way If your utility room is at one end of a Ranch style home. Getting hot water to the other end wastes a lot of water and time. Of course in the morning, So let me look up a couple more of those brands while we take this.
