Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Has a Gang Problem

"Castle. Welcome to the show. So you're the you're the author of a fifteen part series That's currently on a knock. La documenting basically a fifty year. History of violence As it pertains to a series of gangs that operate within the la county sheriff's department that are comprised of la sheriff's county deputies Just like it's hard to draw. The conclusion suggested by this investigative series. Is that the most vicious and dangerous gangs in los angeles are have badges and operate as a gang a metaphorical sense but like literally by california criminal. Code is a gang every sense of the word. Yeah one hundred percent. I mean you you say at the top in in your pieces like the headline you you you list. The section of the california penal code that pertains to what like how how to determine whether an organization is a criminal gang and according to the penal code. It has to have three more people that one have a common name or identifying signs. Simple has is one of its primary activities. The commission of one of a long list of california criminal offenses and three whose members have engaged in a pattern of criminal gang activity. Either alone or together. How does that fit the gangs that you started your investigating in this series. Yeah well. I opened the series with The definition of the california penal code Really intentionally because you know these. Deputy gangs really aren't any different than criminal street gangs. The only difference is that you know they are able to operate with a badge and impunity. I think it is unfortunate and irresponsible that our judicial system has not categorize these deputy gangs of such If you look in local media the sparse coverage that has been on these deputy gangs. There's a lot of hesitation to use the word gang in this case I was very intentional with using that word. Because you know these are gangs and we need to call them what they are.

Why the crash was framed as a pure accident and why a drug recognition expert wasn't brought in right away because there were many situations involved in the accident where it's kind of automatic. And so i mean i could go on what you reaction immediately hearing all that well a couple of things My big one is though when a story like that breaks. Why lost his son his twenty two year old son who was making provision to join the US army at visited recruiting offices and was trying to join the US army, and it is just heart breaking heart wrenching when I play some of the audio of Jason Kaufman. Just couple thoughts. Here some of the data. And what's just unbelievable is we've also found out that some of the people inside this California bar inside this this bar in Ventura County. It's Thousand Oaks, I know the ice to live in LA county for a couple of years. And this is what's amazing some of the survivors or some that were involved at the route ninety one. Harvest music festival in Las Vegas. We're at the bar or others that had friends in the bar were also at the route ninety one harvest festival, which remains the largest mass shooting in US history. Just awful awful. Situation over a year later, but some were at the festival, and we're in the bar last night and others were not in the bar but had friends in the bar, but they were also at the the route ninety one harvest music festival across. From. From where the Mandalay bay. Perched shooter was just horrific folks. If you want get on on the show, it's eight hundred eight zero one eighty nine ninety nine the nationwide number eight hundred eight zero one eighty nine ninety nine so just kind of going down. The the fact she what we know so far. Twelve dead. Those are the innocent people. I hate to include when the the murderer dies. I don't like to include them inside the death toll. But a former marine. And now, we're hearing did he have PTSD. Listen, I I it doesn't give you the right or doesn't excuse you from going into an establishment and murdering innocent people dressed in black. Some said he had the black sweater or trench coat type on the sunglasses on. And shot his way into the bar actually shot. I an unarmed security guard outside the front door of the bar. Packed with college kids on country music night. Ron hillis. Was this twenty nine year veteran of the Ventura County sheriff's department? The Sarge was one of the first killed. He's being hailed as a hero. What it was all over fifteen others that were injured the shooter killed himself apparently at the scene. The shooter identified as twenty eight year old Ian long. And this was at the border line bar and grill in Thousand Oaks, California Ventura County, which of tour's just north of LA county to the east of Oxnard. If I'm not mistaken. I mean, these were just college kids having a good time. Dancing singing, having some drinks. Having a good time. A couple of hundred people at least inside this bar the dance floor described this twenty five hundred square feet to a very large dance floor and the sick of the attacker apparently through some smoke grenades onto the floor to distract started shooting. The Ventura County sheriff Jeff dean said it's a horrific scene in there is blood everywhere. Sheriff talked about this acuity guard being shot. I who was standing outside. Ben went inside shot. Several other people. Began opening fire inside the nightclub. The sheriff also said the shooter in a long history of minor run ins with the police, and it was back in April that police were called to his mother's house where I guess he lived. There was some kind of a disturbance. They found him. I rate they found him acting somewhat irrationally. But he was not involuntarily taken into custody, which in California, it is the fifty one fifty also van Halen Al faced on the involuntary detention of fifty one fifty for psych or medical reasons in Florida, my home state, it's known as being Baker acted in every state has their their own term for this involuntary. It didn't happen. So they determined when they're assessors were at the scene that it wasn't worthy of fifty one fifty. But that was the disturbance back in April. The sheriff said that they'd been some discussion. As to whether long was suffering from some type of post traumatic stress disorder. He did serve in Afghanistan. We'll get into that in just a bit. He was an assault. He was apparently was an assault victim at the shooter was an assault victim at this bar three years ago in twenty fifteen so I don't know if that's why he chose that bar. The deputy. Or a deputy sheriff said that none of the run-ins in the law or with the law had provided any indication that he would ever carry out what he did last night. So it's just the already a lot of data here. So he used a Glock model twenty one. A Glock model? Twenty one is a full-sized forty five caliber weapon. And the Glock twenty one. In states that don't have magazine restrictions. That magazine will hold thirteen rounds and one in the chamber so with the Glock twenty one fourteen total rounds one of the chamber, and then thirteen in the magazine, that's the capacity California has gun laws that restrict the handgun magazine. Amounts could ten so by law, and if he bought the gun in California, it should have only come with a ten round magazine. And then one of the chamber ten in the magazine, if I'm not mistaken, I am that's with the model twenty one whether it's the generation for which is a newer version or the standard both thirteen round magazines, but California you'd be limited to ten. There were reports that he had an extended magazine. So I don't know if that means that he had the original OEM equipment that clock provides a non restricted states with a thirteen round MAG Orphee at some type of an aftermarket extended magazine because they're magazines out there, I've seen Glock magazines that'll hold fifty rounds for handguns, and it protrudes this far from the bottom. I don't have a model twenty one I've got a model a seventeen I've got a nineteen. I've got a model twenty three I've got a Glock model thirty which is a forty five caliber. But it's the contact thirty. Just you know horrific. And of course, the the this wasn't an AR fifteen typically when something happens with an AR fifteen the gun is demonized all of us owners, they are fifteen are demonized. And of course, the amount of they are fifteen are out there, the millions and millions that are held by millions of law abiding Americans. You know, we it's these sickos these many cases mentally ill individuals that carry out these acts, but no AR fifteen used this was just a handgun. A Glock model twenty one so he must've well, if he had a high capacity magazine, again, I don't know how high of a capacity the magazine was or if he did reload, and, you know, put in digital magazines, there was one witness that said that he should have stayed in that he felt guilty that he got out with his son. And that he should have waited for the shooter to drop the Maggie and reload the try to neutralize, but I that's not confirmed the weather, multiple magazines were used or just a long extended magazine or whatever that is. We'll we'll find out in due course. I wanna grab some calls on this. If you have any thoughts before we get into the Jim Acosta wrap up and the analysis a day later on that mess at the White House yesterday. And I I have a lot of specific thoughts on Jim Acosta, which will get to. I wanna play that audio again. Also, I have the audio of Jason Kaufman. Which I wanna hear I want you to hear Jason Kaufman. The father who lost his son. Inside the bar, Cody. Know also, we found out that there were six off duty police officers inside I guess enjoying the night six off duty cops inside the bar. Now. This is an interesting situation. The reports are that none of the off duty police officers in the bar were armed. Now, many police departments and hear me out here. Many police agencies sheriff's departments police departments across the country require their off duty officers or deputies to carry when they're off duty. But. The issue. Here is many departments have a policy that off duty officers cannot carry if they're inside a bar which serves liquor or if they're imbibing as well. So we'll we'll get into that in just a bit too. That's up. I'm I'm guessing that's why none of the deputies or of the off duty police officers in the bar. I'm guessing that's why they were not armed because many police agencies do not allow their deputies to carry off duty when they are in a drinking establishment..
