"Abortion would be allowed if the woman's health was at risk and now they have to make sure that the senate passes this in order for this one cow sal to be permitted but yeah yeah and it's not it's not a surprise that this is the one that passed because i mean it. It caught the international attention right a copy. The attention of the international commission of human rights the united nations. You know has those as one of the tenants of basic human rights for women and girls but the other two cases are also very very important here media especially the case of rape and of women or girls who become pregnant as a result of a rape because until recently child marriage was allowed in the dominican republic. It was only made illegal in january of this year. Wow this is. I know as a reporter. This is something that you often talk about. Which is how you're not supposed to bring the personal into the reporting right and you're not supposed to bring sort of your own story. But i found out recently that my grandmother may she continue to rest in peace used to work at an abortion clinic in the sixties. And the around. Shame when it comes to that story is insane. Like i found out about this in passing. It was sort of just mentioned by my aunt. Like oh yeah. My mom used to work at an abortion clinic in the sixties. And i have never heard about it again. I have tried to find more information about you. Know where was the clinic. Or how long does she worked there. What does she do while she was there. And i haven't found any information. And i think this just speaks to the shame that women feel when it comes to to abortion and also to how this issue isn't new. This is a new and people have been having Abortions in secret for decades if not more centuries centuries yes. I'm like for able for century for century. That's right yeah yeah. Oftentimes people in this country don't realize how there is really a you know a latin-american caribbean consciousness and that there's a political vibe that can happen around this entire area and so this fight for women's reproductive rights and their ability to decide what's happening with their own bodies is not happening ina vacuum in the region so this isn't new right because they're really have been powerful movements across latin america. That essentially really attempting to overturn these restrictive kind of legislation. So in argentina. Women have been protesting for years and finally a new law was passed in december of two thousand twenty expanding access to legal abortion and people have been seen a pretty serious activist movement coming out of ci lie and this has been marked by the women and their allies all wearing green carrying green handkerchiefs. So i'm wondering. Do the dominican activists see themselves as part of what's being called this green wave that's expanding throughout latin america. Yes yes i absolutely do. Do feel that and the activists here do see themselves in that way. I mean not only do they wear green they also Have taken on some of the the chance that women around and across latin america us and they lean on be skase's and other countries to make strategic moves to make strategic decisions and tossed feel a sense of unity. So sad i one of the activists. This is what she told me at the camp. They.

"Digital newspapers you you see a lot of violence to see violence and you see in you. Just stop feeling states. I also spoke to another woman who did have an abortion her name. is gina go. She is an activist and an artist currently living in new york city which is why she's being open about it because she. She says that she feels safe. Since she's not in dominican republic anymore and. She told me that she felt that. She was only able to access an abortion because she was middle class because she she wants colleges who basically instructed her on what to do. Here's gina like he he first of all like he berated me because i was back right like garlic. How am i doing to my family. So the shame. Start from the get go. And he was the one who like immediately told them like. Oh yeah i like. You're getting an abortion. So he just told me like the war. Like i'm gonna get everything and he got someone to sat to my house like ahead only got a delivery guy to gun me the pills and me everything so he told me like quickly what i have to do but then he also told me like by the way like i cannot see you again after this so gina took the abortion pills and had to go to another gynecologist to follow up and she says that she felt very lonely and very scared that she had to go through the pain of the abortion alone because the doctor told her. I'm going to give you these pills but you won't be able to see me anymore. After words it was terrible. It was i think like the whole night and part of the morning just like in pain that like two days later going checking like to make sure that i didn't have any rustu's inside of me and in some of the worst case scenarios. She says that some of her friends who have had abortions and a similar way then also face shame or even violence when returning to the hospital. Here's jeanne again relating friends experience so we go to the hospital. She gets a sonogram. She gets the abortion and she goes back like a week after a because this is procedural you need to make sure that nothing is there and it was the same technician doing a sonogram. And she was using one of those like pelvic sonogram said you entered through the vagina and she was being really violated and committing Violence against her because she realized what happened so she was just like. Oh look at this. Also now you don't have any you have any child inside of dina told me. Her friends felt uncomfortable with the way the technician was behaving and using offensive language. And she will find. We'll start dunk. Also it's gonna hurt here. She used a dominican phrase. That means once you make a certain decision. You also have to deal with the pain of that decision so there's a lot of shame. There's a lot of shame around this issue. And and even for women who even for women who are able to access an abortion is not is also not easy peasy and in the end the fact that it's illegal means that there's a lot of fear around going through this procedure. I mean i. I hadn't thought about how difficult it must be to be an obgyn. A gynecologist in the dr is something that dr funder is able to do to help at all something that dr founder told me. Is that the fact that these cow saleh's haven't been passed makes it difficult for her to do her job because when you become a doctor you take on a hippocratic oath that you're supposed to protect people you're supposed to help save people's lives and the lack of these castellinis make it difficult for her to do her basic job of protecting her patients. We have a woman owned. Risk die because they are pregnant or they can't receive the correctly because they are redness. You know that's really difficult. If you are a doctor save live new where we were ranking safe. Live that if you have doctors that are saying that the today scou- style is in fact are needed in the dominican republic. If women are suffering a people are seeing this in. These stories are connecting to people You know people women dying unnecessarily because they can have access to reproductive rights. So why is it still so hard to pass these laws. Well i whole eighteen eighty four penal code but also the catholic church has a lot of power in day to day life. here's dr liam fonder again referring to an agreement signed between the vatican and the dominican government in one thousand nine hundred fifty four an agreement that is still current dominican republic have also the conquered that means the government of the republic. So we have from here and it's very important rico. Power of religion ever seen a woman's lies. I if you open this woman woman will recognize a little big that they are the older of her.

"And before the break. We were speaking journalist among narcan para about the history and the consequences of the total abortion ban. That's been in place in the dominican republic since the year eighteen eighty four. It's a legacy that feminists and activists on the island have been fighting for decades to change over the last few months. The chance of reaching a legal reform has gotten closer than ever before but there are still a lot of challenges. We're going to get back now to our conversation with journalists among the gandhara right for a moment. Let's talk a little bit about the power of the women in the dominican republic. So i'm thinking historically for example almanacs meet up the meter sisters who were at the forefront of bringing down the dictatorship in the dr of through. So there's this kind of sense of blood ancestry and resistance that runs in the kind of collective culture of the dominican republic and the women there and as part of the recent protests to pass the three outside women's rights activists decided to build a camp in the capital santo domingo. So tell us a little bit about this camp who created it and who is there. The camp was basically a spontaneous formation that began on march eleven when activists came out and protested for the disco silas when congress got together to begin revising the penal code and these activists and feminists saw that they weren't including the three silas in the penal code. They decided we're going to stay here and camp out. And they were there for seventy three days total. I actually visited the camp on one of those days and i spoke to an activist. There her name is that i forget ill. She is a young queer educator and advocate who spoke to me about why she decided to protest and why she even camped out on certain nights..

"Yes yeah and guys. I think we've we've we've heard such you know horrible stories of situations of women being so desperate but then you you forget how desperate how desperate can feel if you have no no out in something like this. That's that's hard on the yeah. Yeah it's very hard and so what these activists want is for the system to take on this issue so that women can go to a hospital and can get an abortion in a way that is safe in a way. That is secure again. These are circumstances were basically women. Don't have to be victimized by the circumstances under which they got pregnant rice over. We're talking about someone who got pregnant because of a rape case if then you're telling that person that they cannot get an abortion you are re victimizing them and when it comes to women who are at risk because of their pregnancy. These are some of the cases that have gotten the most attention especially the case of asada whose nickname is has been on cpa so she was the sixteen year old girl that she needed Cancer treatment for leukemia and it was denied by the doctors because she was pregnant and she ended up passing away. Old mundi is holding kepala. Come into your komo. Speranza level center. Is he say sandusky stopping but assad then yellow samya escudo threat amino toco the forensic sequel constitutional when the case of autosound spent on seat. That happened. funder was actually there to speak out about that issue too and we actually have taper for at that time to determine salary with a meeting of yet i inaugurations to media with dr funder said. Is that if it's been on cpa hadn't been pregnant or if she had been a man she would have gotten the treatment that the medical protocol for a case like this is to end the pregnancy in the first trimester so that the patients can get the treatment. This is a case that happens over ten years ago and her mom has been very outspoken to this day about how she says. The system basically took her daughter from her. He is have the we that omitted in jail. And this is actually case that was taken on by the interamerican commission of human rights because even from an international standpoint. It's it's sort of an indictment on the system here coming up.

"Deliverable of sour. They they laugh. Tecos allies against and. Theo is another issue on komo news came bleaker mutual. Stay stamos a mental. They might lose not really he. Also so activists and feminists to the street in that moment to protest and to the man that these three cow stylist be included in the the new penal code. So it's interesting. Because i think people understand that abortion rights are under attack in the united states but basically you're having feminists and their allies and other women say basically. We just want you to say it's okay to get an abortion if there's incest rape or the woman's life is is in danger and even that is a a source for a tremendous amount of activism so in certain countries going ahead and getting an abortion can have some really tough consequences as well for example. Tell us about what happens in el salvador to a woman who wants to get an abortion in el salvador. It's also completely illegal to get an abortion. Under any circumstances the punishment there is harsh. Women can face over thirty years in prison and at least eighteen. Women have actually been prosecuted and imprisoned even though we have this penal code here in dominican republic. They're very few cases that actually get prosecuted by law. Basically the police doesn't really pursue these cases For the most part unlike in salvador however there have been cases the haven't pursued like one of twenty year old woman who was given pain medication and she ended up going to the hospital. Losing the baby and she was taken to trial because she was accused of having an abortion. And it's interesting. Because i was reading the news about what's happening in the united states now and with rovers wade going back into the supreme court. That's essentially what would happen in the. Us what is already happening here. It's that abortion would only be accessible to those who can afford it all right so if you are not wealthy and you need to get an abortion in the dominican republic. Amanda you've been doing reporting on On the ground in the dr. So tell us a little bit about what you learned about what that looks like for women right now. I spoke to colleges. And i spoke to several people who confirmed that getting an abortion. Here is possible but only for women who are able to pay. So when that's up happening. Is that women who live in poverty. Women who are marginalized women who are disenfranchised do not have access to an abortion and this creates a situation of inequality. This is leeann fonder the gynecologist i spoke with i. You need to have the information at it costs money any time because it's not losing who worship if you are twenty five what if you are fifteen is not saying because you don't have spews you don't having for major how to do it as gynecologist. She has attended many teenage girls. Who got pregnant in some cases against their will when it comes to underage girls giving birth data from the national office of statistics show the number of cases of persons under fourteen years old giving birth and they were alarming in the last ten years. There's been thirty. Four thousand three hundred and seven cases in the caribbean dominican republic. Guyana have the highest lesson. Pregnancy numbers is it crime and law to have said child. What is just in the bigger if you are under fifteen your but you also complete human being to to be responsible for other people. It's very difficult for women living in poverty to have an abortion and at times what happens is that women take matters into their own hands and put their own life at risk so the symbol of the batch. Our the hangar was something that was used by artists in during the protest to represent that women use hangers clothing hangers to to perform abortions on themselves. There was a case where a woman hit her stomach with a block of cement a block of concrete in order to induce an abortion. Goodness.

"Pretty particular. They were saying less. Today's cows silas which can basically be translated into the three grounds or the three circumstances. So that's a less three scou- sally's i mean it's like it's it doesn't roll right off of your tongue. I'm trying to think of ever used the word. Gauss silas anywhere in my life in spanish. And i'm like. I don't think i've ever used that word. So kisses to the last three days. Cow sally's yes. So the silence. Which was a word that i've personally gotten very used to saying because i've been in the middle of these protests They're basically three circumstances under which women would be allowed to have an abortion and these are considered sort of the basic circumstances right. So it's when there has been a case of rape or incest when the fetus non non-viable and when the health of the woman is at risk and the thing is my these are considered basic human rights. So it's actually a big deal to have these three cow sally's because in some places you don't have any in other words. Abortion is illegal. No if ands or buts right yes. That's right and one of those places is the dominican republic so in the dominican republic. Right now even if a woman's life is at risk even if there's a case of incest illegal for them to seek an abortion yes yes it's illegal and there have been cases of women and girls who have passed away because they haven't had access to abortion while being at the hospital while doctors know that this could save their life and it's honestly very angering was it's like basic you know it's like the minimum rice so people are not asking for free abortion access. This is rather only under these three cases and it has been very very difficult for feminist activists and women to get these three approved because conservatives and christians have such a strong hold on the government here and that's stronghold on the government isn't new in fact. This law is based on a penal code. That was passed in the year. And so okay. Let me get this right here. This penal code was passed in the year. Eighteen eighty four. And it's still being used. I mean are we serious here. Yes yes we are serious. When i first reported on this story. I'm going to be honest with you. I wrote nine nineteen four. Because i thought that was the right number and then when i was fact checking it blew my mind that it was actually eighteen eighty four. So how does that. Eighteen eighty four penal code. Have anything to do with what's happening now in terms of women and reproductive rights right now the penal code says women can go to prison for up to two years if they have an abortion and up to twenty years for doctors who practice abortions. Wow so what's happening now. Is that the penal code is actually being reviewed by this new government. That was sworn in last year. If you remember the story that we did hear that i spoke to you about the previous ruling party had been in government for about sixteen years and last year. The dominican republic made history when they voted in a new government headed by salvino there during his campaign. He said that he was in favor of the three gosselies. And then when he became president one of the things new government took on was revising the penal code however when they initially presented their reform in congress it did not include the three calls sally's so did the candidate of united make a promise during his campaign to kind of deliver on.

Vin Diesel's Neighbors Upset By Aggressive Security Presence

"Diesel. Has a security problem with his neighbors who say that his security team act like they own the hood. S O. He Vin Diesel is renting a place in a gated community in the Dominican Republic and neighbors say he has 12 really aggressive security guards protecting him and his family. The next door neighbor says the last straw was this Easter. When the guards blocked pedestrians and traffic, so Vin and his kids could bicycle. Lord and have so this neighbor wrote a letter to him, which, of course, was obtained by TMZ. They've got people everywhere. And he says, You know, for a few weeks I've personally witnessed and heard from fellow homeowners, the unprecedented in abusive display of your security people around our homes and the beach. Interrogating us blocking our street with five or six SUV stopping residents while walking when you ride your bicycle. And you know they have a point. Sure, he says in over 10 years, the homeowners in this beach area have never endured or suffered such absurd comportment. Anyone renting a home and are very small and very private and very secure community. This guy happens to be from New York. No surprise market issue is that seven was doing I'm walking. You had a tinge of sarcasm when he wrote, he said, You should know you're visiting a community where, um Um That nobody feels threatened by people who are visiting the area. He's got this long letter. So apparently Vin Diesel has been going to this area for or at least the Dominican Republic for like 20 years. And he said. Well, I was riding my bike with my kids and handing out Easter baskets to workers in the community. His workers. His keyboards right here is like Hey, Bruce. Hey, go, Chuck. Number three. Howard bloom is doing some research on this for us in an indexed couple days, we'll have a report, Qatar Airways has been named the best airline in the world according to sky track, which is a aircraft carrier ranking site, some of the others, Singapore Airlines Nippon Airways emerets. No US planes on this list at all. Interesting. President Donald Trump is formerly launched his twenty twenty reelection campaign Tuesday night before a jampacked crowd, and Orlando's Amway center arena and quickly. Unloaded on the media organizations and government actors she said have tried their hardest with everything they had to bring down both his candidacy and his presidency. Meanwhile, the president's campaign vowed to get the US out of costly, foreign entanglements colliding with the messy reality of America's commitments to the Middle East where tensions arising between Washington and Aram after attacks onto tankers last week, the dilemma emerged again, as the administration has ordered another one thousand troops to the region in response to what the president says is a rans role in the latest strikes. The government of Iran has rejected those accusations, Dr John Curtis online, columnist dot com. Tom with us here. John is just going to ask. What do you think? Well, it depends what you mean by escalated the tension levels very high right now. But I do I do not think this is going to be another Iraq war, if that's what you're alluding to. I think that whatever happens, you know, with respect to your ranch stupid enough to try to block the strait of removes prevent more bombings of, of, of commercial shipping through the Gulf of Persian Gulf in the Gulf of Oman. I think that the US will respond how they will respond will not be a full scale war at all. It will be to bomb certain. It's delay ship related to revolutionary guard. Now, if you remember George on the age of, of, of, of April, this year, Trump labeled the revolutionary guard a terror organization, and so there, you know, sunny Hasan Salaam. Yeah salami. This is. Guard force basically today announced that Iran's guided missiles could take down any aircraft carrier in the Gulf, now, that's, that's pretty strong escalation top, but Arandas wanna war, they know that anymore with the United States, would result in the complete removal of the moola regime. There would be regime change. So they'll want that they're not going to do that. They are going to back off from what they're doing right now. You have to remember that part of the reason that Trump back out of the, you know, over a year ago, I may eighteenth twenty eighteen of the Iran. Nuke deal was the fact that he do be rainy started a proxy war, you know, earlier and with Saudi Arabia, and we're unrelenting hitting the Riyadh international airport with missiles, they've hit oil pumping stations in the last few. Months, and most recently, now interfering with shipping in the Gulf, so, yes, a small increase presence of US military resources is valuable right now to let Iran know that they may think that, you know, the US were with them by instituting these new sanctions and preventing around essentially from selling oil, but, but Trump is on the right track to be able to get Iran, that table as Chris van Holland today, the Senator out of Maryland, made some statement to fact of how much more dangerous the world is now that Trump back this out of the rainy, nuke deal. Well, the Iranians have always denied that they were working on a nuclear bomb. So basically, what Holland is saying is, yes, they will working on a nuclear bomb. But he's also saying that the way to deal with Iranians is to stand down and to appease them not to basically. Draw a red line, which is what Trump is doing now, that shipping has been, you know, interfered with in the Gulf, and I think that the message to Iran now is you engage the US military and the US military will finish the fight finish the job. And you know, so why watch what you're doing. And I think it is not going to ask the light into anything more than a potential limited targeted strike, if it even comes to that, John, I hope you are right..

"So, you know, a lot of you guys have summer vacations planned and looks like many of you are thinking about going to the Dominican Republic, and I've seen online people freaking out about going to the Dominican Republic, as we are hearing multiple people have been complaining of getting sick. And we had, I guess, reports of four tourists deaths that we talked about, which is very, very frightening. Especially when it sounded like they died within minutes. So we still don't have a lot of information. The we have guesses on. Why four US tutor tourists died. There was also an alleged assault on another that left her battered and hospitalized she had gone to the Dominican Republican so we hear of an attack that also happened, and I've been to the Dominican Republic once my father-in-law has a timeshare. And so we went to visit it was beautiful, just absolutely beautiful there, you know, part French part, and both sides of it goes, good, the tech side or the French side, they're both gorgeous. It's beautiful island. I think the most beautiful islands, of course are Hawaii. You know, I'm you know, just really, really to Hawaii. Hawaii is one of the most beautiful islands out there, but the Dominican Republic has the basic watering Amisi beaches. And so I urge you to go, but not yet not yet until we could figure this out. In fact, we are being told that nearly seventy tourists have claimed that have come forward saying they got sick. These are the ones that obviously did it die. New York Post is reporting that I apologize have computer nearly seventy tourists have reported getting violently ill while the case in the Dominican Republic since March, that's up from ten that was reported for all of two thousand eighteen now there's a website called I was placed into dot com. And so allows people to report things. But then you also wonder how many people just want post to post, but fifty tourists reported symptoms of diarrhea and fever. More than forty five of them identified themselves as guests of the hard rock hotel casino puts a Connor now hard rock hotel. I mean that's a pretty well known chain, for whatever stand up pretty well. Run chain. There's hard rock hotels, everywhere. Why would something like this happen, but, you know, football Noma says can happen. So when somebody has vomiting, diarrhea fever, then unfortunately, there could have been some contamination or some worker, who was sick. Patrick Quade, founder of I was poisoned dot com at ah that he consulted with scientists regarding his findings. He says we started to see unusual activity in April when six people reported being ill on the island, but in June. It exploded. One expert, quite consulted Lee and Jacob was a food microbiologist of the department of food science at North Carolina. State university said exposure to an insecticide chemical known as gain, a phosphate could result in severe vomiting. Diarrhea. But in dire cases that could cause cardiac crisis while remember four different people have died. And they had reported where all they did was have drink in their minibar or they had stayed there for the week. Everything. Seemed fine one couple the couple died. So what do they eat? Was it room service? What and this is freaking a lot of people out because, you know, people go to the Caribbean all the time they go to the Bahamas Jamaica, they go to, you know Haiti. They go to Honduras, there's like so many different. It's you know there's so many beautiful places to go right to the east. I live in the west. I mean we go to Hawaii. Those are probably the only islands we could go to where we go down to Mexico. When you're east coast, even though we're west coast. We'll go over the east go to Caribbean. It's, it's a very, very common place to go vacation, and, you know, take cruises. So the US states apartments, international travel, paid says visiting other countries via great experience. Sometimes spite a good planning things can still go wrong. So I don't believe they have any warnings yet. Now there's an investigation in Fiji on may twenty second Texas. Couple David Michelle Paul checked into a hotel on Denaro island. Michelle's father, Mark Calla. Got a message from her late twenty-fourth that said, we are both going to the doctor Dow even throwing up for eight hours. David also, has diarrhea my hands are not. Then he got a call. A may twenty fifth. Michelle was dead and David Paula two days later, so Fiji's ministry of health and medical services said in a statement that the investigation is ongoing, but deficient don't believe the public is at risk can how does a couple die? Now. I thought we heard that the Dominican Republic, there was a couple who had died. So I'm not sure if the or media got mixed up for it was what happened in Fiji. But. There's another report saying, six people have died, whilst at luxury resorts the island since last year. So the FBI has to the FBI is vesting, but the has this gate, the CDC investigate, and somebody needs to figure out our people being poisoned. I mean it sounds like a poisoning and organic phosphate poisoning that can happen with pesticides or other certain poisons, etc. Those can unfortunately all be very. Shall we say very abrupt very non non accidental? It's scary. It's frightening. So Fiji, right? They're looking at that, apparently in Egypt, we're being told by Fox News. A British couple John and Susan Cooper, what to her God with their daughter, granddaughter on vacation on August twentieth returned to the room and they noticed a strong acetone odor. Their daughter and granddaughter, moved to another room. You know, because I was kind of getting sick. Then a Jovan tourist checked out. Could I could've stand the smell but the next day both the grandparents decide to stay in the room he does. So the two could leave then dead. Dr Nick, get a senior medical visor public health England, Senate a preliminary report, most likely an infectious biological agent or toxic chemical. Kill the couple. But in March, gypsum prosecutors said they both died from. E. Coli. E coli. Yeah. That could come on fast, but acetone odor. That e-coli takes a little while. You can't get a hemolytic uremic syndrome. But again, diarrhea bloody diarrhea vomiting, not so much waking up dead. Thomas Cook travel, company, said that high levels of equalized staff bacteria, which causes toxic shock were found at the hotel or the couple state, so the company, then evacuated three hundred guests as a precaution after their deaths. So, you know. There's another case Vietnam. Two thousand seven eleven tourists and their Vietnamese guide. Drowned for the boat, sink a year later, Wisconsin native carry Bauer men, and Canadian Capela Huber backpack in Vietnam. They're on break from their English teaching jobs in Korea. They became very ill vomited struggle to breathe head dehydration. One had respiratory failure, and died. The other one was released, but then had to go back to the hospital, then died today's later, and they apparently died from a strong pesticide called Chlor FO's banned in the US. But Asian countries use it to tackle bedbugs. Now, some people think might have been poisoning their drinks. Now there's just more and more stories Thailand, Mexico. Now again, these are rare occurrences. We have thousands of us go to these countries and hang out a vacation. So when we hear of one that or two deaths, it's scares the heck out of us. But it doesn't mean that Americans are, you know, under attack, but it does make you wonder. You know, people always say, gosh, you know, when you go to Europe, they don't like Americans over there. I didn't get that feeling. I've been to Europe wants my whole life. I did not get that feeling. I mean, if a feeling care, you know, I mean, the average shopowner is happy that were there, because we're spending money. But. You know. Anybody's target. Somebody doesn't like somebody's jealous of your target. And when you're tourist, you're one of the most vulnerable teaching myself, French just because I don't wanna be vulnerable that I'm going to be fluent in French fries go, but just vulnerable. And, and when you're vulnerable, you're a great target for somebody wants to crime. What seven belly? Complement your health with him to rive cannabinoid oil?
