"But Kyle Ride just finished off on him. He did, of course, have a slip up this weekend, he had a crash while leading one of the races. So if he didn't have that blip, he could have potentially been second or third of the championship at the moment. Potentially. It was to Ryan Vickers gain, though, in that particular race, race two, I think it was, where Vickers finished P2. So yeah, I mean, hey ho. Let's start in race one. I mean, well, going back to the qualifying actually, Leon Haslam, I think for the race one started on the front row. So I think he even got the new lap record as well in race one. Well, we were expecting with the new track surface at Donington that it would be a new lap record this weekend in the race, and it was. And yeah, Leon Haslam currently has the new lap record around Donington. Yeah, he's flying this year on that BMW. And certainly, if we compare him, let's say just to one year ago on that Lee Hardy Kawasaki, he looked like he was lost. He looked like he didn't know what he wanted to do or what he wanted from his race meetings. And now he went on to that BMW, that Rocket and BMW Motorrad bike, and he's straight away flying in the front like his father did back in the day, Rocket Ron. But this time, Leon Haslam on the Rocket BMW, qualified in second and was fighting for podium positions all the way throughout the weekend. So yeah, good mix of manufacturers at the moment at the front in BSB as well. The BMWs, the Yamahas, Ducatis, even a glimpse of Honda this weekend as well. So yeah, race one, it was Kyle Wright, of course, did start in that pole position. And he managed to convert that into his first race win of the weekend, which straight away I was impressed by. It was something that we were expecting going into the race weekend, but it was flying.

"I think it was, or even take a race win. It was one of the two. I was like, I swear I put Jason O 'Hara in them. But instead, I went for one of my race winners as Glen Irwin. Instead, he just decided to stay on the podium. For the majority of the weekend, which was a shame. But for my podium, I was like, okay, it must have been Jason O 'Hara. Because what we decided before, I mean, I sort of, like, came up with it on the spot last week, if you didn't hear last week's show. We decided on, pick someone who's not been on the podium yet to go on the podium, or someone who's not normally on the podium. And then pick, I even forgot what the criteria was. Yeah, it was just a race winner, someone who is not normal on the podium. Or in the points. Yeah, and then it was points. There you go. So, go on, who did you choose? So, for my win, I put Glen Irwin. But instead, he just stayed on the podium all weekend. For my podium, now, I'm going to defend myself before I stay here. He had the pace to go on the podium. Go on, who was it? He was involved in quite a few incidents, and that was Andrew Irwin. He was in fourth at one point, in race two, and then he crashed. But, you know, in my heart. Points, I put Charlie Nesbitt, which ended up being quite a good pick. Finished in sixth in race two, I think it was. And, Lester, your picks were Kyle Wright, has taken one of your race wins. Which, you were correct, of course. Your podium, Danny Kent, that didn't happen. Did I say points on the podium? Your points were Storm Stacy. Right. Which was a yes. So, I got one right, and you got two right. Yay! There you go. And I did consider Ryan Vickers, but, yeah. Yeah, if you said Vickers, it would have been a full house. But it was really good. I think we discussed it on last week's show, that he basically, it's his time now. Because we weren't sure this time last week, whether he was going to even be at, you know, racing at Donington. Because he just recovered from his injury, or was recovering from his injury. Thankfully, he clearly did recover, and he's not only back to full form, but he's better than ever before. So, whatever he did, yeah, it worked. Yeah, it was great seeing him up at the front. It was great seeing him proving people wrong. Even like myself, to be honest, I didn't think, I thought that maybe there could have been better people to put on that OMG seat. But he was flying last weekend, and he was in the podium and fighting for a race win as well. So, so impressive to see from Ryan Vickers. And yeah, as we said last week, it's his time to shine. And if he can repeat what he did at Donington a couple more times this year, could we see him potentially even win a race? I think, yeah, it is his time. On that bike, in that package, I mean, it's not slow. I think they've got a lot of work to do to keep up with everyone else. But yeah, the pace is still there, and Ryan Vickers is as good as anybody on his day. So why not? Yeah, great. And also Kyle Ride as well. He was repeating what he was doing, what last year on that OMG bike, and repeating the success once again. So, OMG seemed to be the team that would probably come out this weekend to the happiest. Yeah, and they were quite happy all weekend. And with Kyle Ride, his local circuit, I think he's, yeah, yeah. So yeah, local home advantage, I think, from him.

"At the mosque three in the last ten games judge is batting three O three, his slash line, three O three, four 42, and his OPS one two three zero. I'm bad at numbers. Is it too early to ask why people are pitching to him, Rizzo is having a good year, but I'll take my chances. No, and we were asking that question about halfway through last year. We assumed that teams would bypass pitching a judge as much, but they get pitching to them even when the Yankees had all those injuries and judge was like the most formidable force in that lineup. And I guess there's some analytic argument not to intentionally walk in and pitch around him, but you know what? All he does is keep doing damage. And when the Yankees win, it feels like judges involved every time. Andrew salvo at desalvo writes in you recently referenced the trend of starting pitchers rarely reaching the 7th or even the 6th inning anymore should Major League Baseball consider changing the definition of a quality start to the scores discretion and do you think they might? I don't think that they'll take that fight on any time soon. And if I remember correctly, I think that that effort would probably have to start with the Elias sports bureau. But it's hard for them to change the definition of a particular stat, right? Which, by the way, was invented by my good friend John Lowe, who used to cover the tigers for the Detroit free press. Oh, that's pretty cool. Elizabeth Hart at E Hart tweets writes in, can you please talk about how zombie Bassett is a better picture than 95% of pitchers in the league three singles over 7 shutout innings. Every rotation needs a plow horse, the mets rotation needs a plow horse, like the guy who's going to go out and maybe isn't going to throw a shutout every single game, but he's going to give you a lot of innings. He's going to pitch deep in the game. He's going to save the bullpen and he's generally generally speaking going to be effective. And that's what Chris bass has been for the Blue Jays. I love zombie Bassett. That's a great nickname. That's a great name. Last one for the week. Paul a Haynes at Haines lab MQ rates and what happened to the opener and the bullpen day every 5th day they used to be common in baseball, but seemed to have faded out, is there a good reason? I think it's because teams now are more likely if they suddenly have to have a bullpen type day. They're more likely to go with a guy who's going to throw two or three innings. It's kind of, I don't really think it's that different than what we used to see with the opener. And the bullpen day. And I think teams, it's amazing how many transactions every day where teams are moving pictures up and down from the minor leagues. I'll say it again. They become the running backs of the Major League Baseball. Teams just burned through pitchers, it feels like day after day after day after day. And the old standard when we talk about teams that need to be great that need to have a great rotation. That's just not true anymore. The Atlanta Braves are a classic example that max fried is down. Kyle Wright is down the braves rotation has taken a hit, but they just throw a lot of guys at it and they try to out hit their issues. Dodgers too. All right. That'll do it for bleacher tweets, hashtag bleacher tweets over the weekend. You're watching games. We'll be back on Monday and today is just a good a day as any to extend adley richman. Thanks everyone. Well, that's it for today.

"So then you find out they got Jake deek been. Okay. But if you really believe in Rey's magic, then you should think that Jake DeepMind is going to be the next great pitcher for the race who no one was thinking about. I don't know about that if you really believe. Can you name 5 of their relievers then? Even really good player dove teams and I think that, you know, it's not controversial to say that the razor one of them, they don't hit on every guy. That's part of why you take a volume approach too. Like if you're good at it and you know, not everyone is going to work out, but you're willing to sort of cycle through the fringes of other big league rosters. Now, there are some parts of that that we might think of as sort of unsavory. But like, you know, you know you're going to miss on a lot of them, but if you hit on a couple, really worth it, you know? Yeah. I think why this particular example was so intriguing to me is because it is seemingly a case of the race betting on raised magic to some extent, right? Because again, he's been very bad. So he has to be better, they have to think he'll be better than he's been. Or they wouldn't do it. Yes. He does take a roster spot, so. Yeah, so they're thinking we could fix him at least to some extent that he will be as a stop gap temporarily useful to us. And the White Sox who seemingly are in more need of him concluded that that would not be the case for them. So this is kind of a bet on player development at the major league level, right? So I wanted to make a little bit of our own with zero stakes. Even lower stakes than the raised signing Jake dickman. So that's our extended analysis of the race signing Jake diekmann. I don't know where else you're going to get that kind of content, honestly. What other podcast is breaking down the race signing? Jake dickman. I don't know. I think it's emblematic of larger trends that we talk about. So we'll see if the raise are just so special that they can actually make Jake diekman into a serviceable reliever on a first place team in a great division. But I guess we can sort of segue into injuries because it's an injury that caused the race to sign Jake diekmann. And that was what a knee injury, right? But there have been so many arm injuries lately. And that's not new we could have said that at any point in the past several years and we have while doing this podcast. But there have been a notable number and I've been particularly struck by the number of, well, elbow issues that turn out to be Tommy John or UCL related in many cases, but start as forearm strains or flexor strains. And I don't know whether people listening to this have the same shutter that I do when I hear forearm strain or flexor strain. I just have this instinctive. I recoil. Oh no. It's more ominous than some more serious actual injuries because on its own it shouldn't be that bad, but my impression at least was that in many cases it's a prelude to Tommy John two in extended absence. And I was thinking of this because max freed just went on the IL for Atlanta and max fried has already had a Tommy John surgery. And that was some time ago. Now he is on the IL. And again, they're downplaying it to a certain extent. And I know nothing about max fried specific situation, but forearm strain was the diagnosis and then it was reported, hey, he had an MRI and nothing super concerning and structural damage. He's just going to need some time, right? And it went as had other pitching injuries too. And Kyle Wright is out to so they're hardly alone there. But when I saw that max fried had a forearm strain, I thought, is that as concerning as I suspect that it is. And then I was thinking of Hermann Marquez, who it was reported that he had a four arm strain. And the same song and dance about MRI and nothing super concerning and no structural damage. And then pretty soon after that, he was having Tommy John, right? And cashew you don't even have to range far from the rockies because Antonio sent a tele now he has also gone on the iel, I think, or was removed from a game with at least came out yesterday. Yeah, yeah. So if rocky's fence are probably thinking, here we go again, we just saw this with Marquez, are we going to lose another guy when we're already shorthanded literally? So I was just kind of curious about like, what does a forearm strain mean? And as I was looking into this, the twins announced the Tyler malley is going to have Tommy John surgery, not our listener named Tyler malley, but the actual Tyler malley who pitches for the Minnesota Twins. So he was also a guy who just recently went on the IL four a flexor strain. And those are the same thing, by the way, which I kind of clarified for myself, a forearm strain and a flexor strain. Those are just different terms for the same injury, at least in most cases. So I wondered, I wanted to talk to some people who know more about this to decide whether we should be worried about max freed beyond just this immediate forearm strain and whether just in general, is it a death knell for your UCL if you go on the IO with a forearm strain or a flexor strain. So I called up a couple people, one was Glenn fleisig of the American sports

"The Atlanta Braves rotation was dealt another major blow when ace left hander backs freed was placed on the 15 day injured list with a strained forearm. The loss of freed comes with right hander Kyle Wright, the major's only 20 game winner last season, already on the IO with shoulder soreness. Freed is two in one with a 2.08 ERA this season, but gave up a season high 7 runs in his last start Friday versus Baltimore. He had been scheduled to start Wednesday night against the Boston Red Sox. I'm geffen cool ball.

"DNF so did Charlie nesbitt and well, there was a big kerfuffle in I think others on the start of that first race second race, sorry. Peter hickman crashed out of halloran and Josh Owens as well. That was in race number two and race three gleno in one Leon haslam second in Karl Ryan in third Tommy bridewell in fourth Josh Brooks Peter. Jackson, Andrew Owen, Jason o'halloran, rounding out the top ten stops, Stacy, just in 11th. And yeah, overall a good weekend, Lewis, I would say, could be. Yeah, good weekend race to, as you said, there was a lot of drama start happening, crashed at the first corner, it was always on fault and he didn't collect Taylor one luckily, but he got a great start initial launch and then yeah, he just took the front that term one and they saw the way and Josh Owens a JSON how them also involved in their own incident Jason Howard and to make an ambitious move anyway and then waking up the two riders, but yeah, great. We can the BSB close race and a lot of manufacturers involved that's exactly what we love to see in the championship and there's not really one pair in which you could completely put all your money on at the moment, although the lights all, for example, Josh Brooks and the two PBM boys definitely look very, very consistent. At this point in the season, but now we're starting to see the likes of Andrew and then the Honda creeping at the order. So heading into dawn and it's really going to be a question of who's going to be strongest because we've seen all the manufacturers really, really strong at dawn in the past couple of years. Yeah, well talking about the championship in particular Glenn Irwin leading in the championship on 91 points just four points behind him and don't forget the points system is different this year with us losing the showdown. Forgot the top of my head. I'm still getting around it. But yeah, 18 points for a win, that's right, isn't it? Yes. So Glen Owens leading 18 points for a win and Josh Brooks four points behind game in second tied on second place. Is Tommy bridewell. In third place in the championship or joint second, really, then Leon haslam is only 8 11 points off the lead of the championship. So he's right there, Lois. He is right right there. Karl riding 5th Andrew Irwin in 7th Jack Kennedy in 8th, Lee Jackson knife and Danny Kent in the championship at the moment is in tenth place. Wow. So yeah, slightly different points leading to a much closer initial bit of championship. Yeah, yeah, exactly. And everyone's quick at the moment and BSB. I mean, it's so, so great to see so many fans there as well. It's so popular at the moment. And no wonder why we're getting some great racing. And here in to Donna in park, as you mentioned, championship so close, the likes of Liam haslam. It would be great to see him finally once again after a tough past couple of seasons as even last year in BSP, it was a really tough year from. So yeah, and hopefully something apart we could see another surprise and we could see maybe even some of the writers up the order. We could see max cook getting better as the season progresses. Jack Kennedy's already ruled the super bike teams that don't impact that's where we made this debut well that's been the made this jump back to be as last season with the team. So with the march train team, so he might even have a good ride at Don and park with slightly more experience under his belt. So we're just gonna have to wait and see head and into the park, what's gonna happen, of course, Danny buchan coming back. So the championship at the moment is still wide open and certainly the likes of the catties look pretty strong at the moment as well. So even the likes of Carol ride, of course, he was going well so well last year. He went well at Silverstone. A quiet around to think it's fair to say, but still not a bad threat. He was still up there on the podium in the final race. So Kyle Wright could even fight for championship. We got to wait and find out. I mean, it's so hard to call and storm Stacey on this one lap, and we could even see a special result. This weekend, slightly under the radar, Jason Howell Randy didn't really have that great of a weekend himself, of course, crashed and raised to it, as we said, and finished an intent. And then race free. So no, he would be wanting. Tim neve, down in 18th possession and race three as well. So McCann's a quiet weekend for them and you have to wonder when their seasons got properly start and then they'll be back at the front because we've seen them fast at Silverstone. So Donna and park could be a completely different story. Interesting, okay? Well, yeah, let's see what happens. At the next round. In a couple of weeks, three weeks, two weeks, two, three, two, and three weeks after 20, 21st of May. Yeah. Is the week before then we're doing the fab. Yes. Which is next week. Not this week. Anyway, yeah, okay, so moving on, then talking about the British super sport and GP two championship, two races over the weekend. And yeah, the sprint race on the Sunday. So Tom booth Amos went in that one from Richard Cooper and Luke Jones and Joe Collier GP two winner in that one. Harry Rowland's second and the cup. When I forget there's a cup so I'm riders, but yeah, Tom tons still taking the honors in the cope. In that one. So yeah, that's what happened in race number one, the sprint race two, the feature race, Luke stapleford, winning the race, Richard Cooper in his second Ben curry on the podium in third place, some booth Amos in fourth. And Joel Collier winning GP two, the highest GP two finisher and Tom Thomas doll highest cop. Place classification finisher. So overall super sports races did you have much time to watch those yesterday?

Marlins rally in ninth, stun Braves 5-4 to avoid sweep

"The Marlins put together a 5 run 9th to beat the braves 5 four. Garrett Cooper was in a 6 for 39 slump before supplying a two run double that capped the rally. Yuli gurriel ever sailed Garcia and jazz Chisholm had run scoring singles to chase closer AJ minter before Cooper delivered against Jesse Chavez. Before the rally, Kyle Wright combined with four relievers on a 5 hit shutout. The braves scored all of their runs in the 5th despite getting only two balls out of the infield. Atlanta managed just 5 hits overall. I'm Dave ferry.

"The wait for it dot com hotline by Odyssey MLB insider John haman host of the Odyssey original big time baseball podcast with Tony Gwynn junior covering all things Major League Baseball and of course you can follow John on his personal Twitter page at John hayman John is always but he appreciate a few minutes here in Atlanta as the braves lost today, but man, they have been off to a fantastic start this year. Terrific terrific team, they've got good pitching. They've got great hitting, you know, obviously Swanson is a loss, but they haven't got the terrific all over if he was a great pickup. Obviously Riley and Acuna are big stars and they've got a very balanced and deep lineup. You know, John, I think with today's loss, they've started off ten and two on the road. And, you know, again, when you're a great road team, I mean, obviously the braids are going to play well at home, but what does it say about a team that plays really well on the road, like the braves have? Yeah, I mean, certainly it's easier at home if your tenant too. I mean, that's fantastic. It's an 8 33 winning percentage on the road. Really terrific. Look, they won the World Series two years ago last year. They won a 101 games in a very, very tough division. This is possibly the best team in baseball right now. If you're going to rank them, you do a power rankings, which I don't do. I would probably put them number one at this point, obviously the rays have been great, but I think with the resume that the braves have, I think, that they're probably the World Series favorite at this moment and John, the other interesting thing is obviously there's been a ton of injuries for the braise, whether it's Michael Harris, or Travis darnold, or obviously max fried is mistimed. Kyle Wright was banged up this year. And then you're dealing with Ian Anderson, who's out for the year and on and on and on and on. Is that one of the more remarkable things, though, that the braves have been this good playing this well with all of the guys that they've had injured this year? I mean it's pretty amazing. A lot of teams have that injuries. They are among them. I would say they're probably middle of back on the injuries. With sizzle life for them that they're able to be among the two or three best teams with middle of the pack situation on the injuries, freed obviously, big loss. Now he's come back. That's huge. I mean, Devin ace pitcher, another ace, pitcher, terrific. They really have done a terrific job of procuring talent, certainly of locking up talent better than anybody on that front. And you know, I mean, they have a young team and an outstanding future. You know, one of the things about developing their minor league talent, you know, they've gotten contributions from guys that were drafted in 2019, 2020, 2021 even. Strider and Bryce elder, a guy who were just drafted in 2020, you know, you don't normally see a lot of guys come up through the miners that quick into a major league club. What does that say about their scouting department, their player development? I mean, what does that speak to about how good the braves have done with that? Well, I mean, it got Dana Brown, the GM job of the afros. You know, he's the guy responsible for picking Harris and strider and all the most recent picks were his and you know, it makes sense that they would hire him. I just had him on another podcast and I do a post terrific gentleman and rate that he's finally got a chance to be general manager well deserved and I mean take probably 50 or more a hundred guys who made to the major leagues from the boba shift with a Toronto and Zimmerman's with Washington and Strasbourg and so many great players with Atlanta. I mean, drafting and developing is huge. The teams that do that well, the Dodgers, the braves, the Cardinals, are at a major major advantage. Odyssey MLB insider John hayman joining us here on the wait for dotcom hotline. Let's bounce around the league a little bit, John. What do you make of the Philly start this year? 8 and 11, they're actually fourth in the division. What does it bend that the Phillies have been so bad with so much expectation and obviously so much money that they spent in this off season? Yes, it's certainly surprising. I mean, it's early or 10% went through the season. So we don't want to overplay it, but they had a very good team last year that made the World Series certainly was much better once we're up Thompson took over as manager. I think there are a couple of factors. One is the injuries to Harper and Hoskins and Harper should be back probably in a couple of weeks or so. So that would be huge, but they have 200 RBI guys that lab is big. And then also playing deep into October. I think affects the pitching. Wheeler and Noah haven't been as good as you'd expect them to be. And that's really, I would say the hardest, it's part of the heart of the team. That lineup at full strength is one of the best two or three in the game, but having two pitchers who are aces is a rarity in baseball and should give them a leg up and so far it hasn't been a lot of surprises early though. I mean, the cardinals have been not been very good. Seattle deciders, the Padres. I mean, it is early. So I'm not, you know, I'm not giving up on that, but it has been a bit of a surprise that they started this bad. John, there's been some talk about with the Hoskins injury that they may move Bryce Harper to first base and let him play there versus playing in the outfield. Are you hearing the same things? I mean, what do you think about that? At college app student loans. We know paying for college can be stressful, but we don't think it needs to be that way. "He looks to be primed. He's made a slight swing adjustment if you look at his stance, he no longer holds his bat out forward ahead of him before he gets started with this swing. It's now kind of tilted back, which seems minor, but it looks mighty fluid right now. And I think that with the Freddie Freeman saga behind him with the coming home to Atlanta, getting traded two weeks before three weeks before opening day, all of that behind him. It's a pretty clear path for him. I think to have a great season. I expect even bigger things out of Austin Riley because of what he has shown at times the last two years. Both of those guys could hit 40 homers, Ronald Acuna junior could hit 40 homers, Ozzy obvious was a 30 Homer hitter before his injury last year that kind of sapped him of his usefulness to the braves last year. I posted a tweet about a week ago. The braves got 28 home runs out of Eddie Rosario, Ronald Acuna junior, and Ozzie albies combined last year. That group could easily triple that number this season, and when you look at the braise, maybe not making the biggest splash offensively or signing a big free agent to replace dansby Swanson just by getting those guys back to normal. They may be seeing a big return and they may be seeing one of the best offensive lineups in baseball. I just look at it and there's a lot of reasons to be optimistic about it. You have to temper that with being realistic about injuries and attrition and things that do happen over the course of a season, but there's an awful lot of good hitters, all lined up, seemingly one through 8, at least in the braves lineup, and then Orlando arcia could come in and maybe surprise a few folks. So offensively speaking, I think to praise her in a really good spot. So let's transition to pitching. There are a couple arms who won't be around this year because of Tommy John surgeries. And Tyler. There are also some more nagging interests that some players are dealing with right now and maybe we can talk about those guys. So shoulder issues for rice el Iglesias and Kyle Wright and then you have some muscle strains for Colby allard and Michael, not Mike. Michael siroka. So what is the status of that Quartet when can the braves expect some of their injured arms back? Hopefully sooner than later in the case of all of those men. I don't really have much of an update on Colby allard, who was very excited to rejoin the braves organization, but I don't know if fans were really more excited for a comeback story more so than that of Michael sirocco. I think people were hoping to see it. The hamstring injury, he suffered it the day before he was driving down to report for pitchers and catchers and to get a spring training started. So that was obviously frustrating. I spoke with Michael a little bit when I was down to spring training and he just felt like, hey, this is the temporary setback. And as it happens, he has made his grapefruit league debut. They are going to option him or did option him to triple-A because he's going to need time to make four, 5, maybe more starts to both build his pitch count up, knock off some rust. You got a half a dozen minor league starts last year. I think that's a big part of his comeback as well. So maybe sometime before April's over, if you need him, Michael sirocco's gonna be ready, but for rice hill Iglesias for Kyle Wright, it should be much sooner than that. The braids are hoping right's only going to miss one regular season start. They're gonna open with them on the IL, that opened the door for Dylan Dodd to make the rotation out of spring training. That's been a great story down in northport and Jared Shuster, one of the braves first round picks from back in 2020, he won the fist bot in the rotation over Ian Anderson and over Bryce elder, so it's been a very interesting, I don't know, revolving door or series of musical chairs in the back two spots of the braves rotation, but right should be back soon. Iglesias, they said it was just a very mild or very minor inflammation. They just didn't want to push it too hard here in the first week. Give them the time to let that go down. And then I was looking at an article posted on fan grafts earlier on Monday. Brave seemed to have the number one bullpen in baseball at least by projections. Iglesias is a huge part of that. So they need him healthy and they don't want to push anything in April. You mentioned Dodd and Chester and I wanted to ask about them for brave students who are less familiar with their game. What can be expected from them because I think you're right they really did open eyes this spring. They did. And the biggest thing I think that they were doing that was not happening with specifically Ian Anderson and to a lesser extent Bryce elder was that they were attacking the strike zone. I mean, Jared Shuster and Dylan Dodd both. They worked quick. They threw strikes. They've got great stuff. I think for Schuster, it's a really good change up and then the fastball can play there in the mid to low 90s, at least for the majority of it. And I think he's got an effective breaking ball, so he's got the arsenal that you need. And first round picks, like we said, they're going to find their way to the majors, but I think this is a well earned opportunity for him. Dylan Dodd came a little bit as a surprise. I was on the backfields and Dylan Dodd was working on or working against major league hitters. And there was a group that included Ronald Acuna junior and as I was walking up and I was hearing some of the players leaving a couple of the braves minor league pitchers were like, yeah, they've got dot out there. He just struck out the side on like ten or 11 pitches or something like that. And Ronald Acuna junior was hit in that group. So if you're out there striking out some of the big league regulars, you're going to open some eyes. And then that's exactly what he did and grapefruit league play. He's had maybe a couple of hiccups, but not much to speak of. And again, the strike throwing mid 90s works quick and just exactly what the braves wanted to see out of him was coming and be competitive. They just didn't get that. I think Ian Anderson, who was still looking to make mechanical adjustments and to a lesser extent Bryce elder, I think he just kind of got pushed out because Don and Schuster were so impressive. And the braids are going to give opportunity. And I think that those are two guys that could really shine for them and pitch them important innings early in the year. And you're going to see Jared Schuster in the first series and you're going to see Dylan Dodd in the second series of the season. So the braves are really given these two kids the chance to step in and step up. So as you noted, the best projected bullpen in baseball, some holdovers here, but also some new additions. Joe Jimenez is here and Nick Anderson and Lucas lutke, et cetera so how do you expect this group to shape up, I guess, in Iglesias is absence and then hopefully when he returns. I think we see AJ mentor get the opportunity to close, but he was the praise best reliever last year, and part of I think what made him so good is you could employ him in the 7th inning and the 8th inning or the 8th inning or the 9th inning if you wanted to, but to braise did have guys closing so he didn't have to use AJ that way. And I think that's the role he'll return to once they get Iglesias back in and slotted a closer. Another name on top of those new additions that you mentioned to keep in mind is the brace of Kirby Yates who did throw some innings for him last year, but was a big time closer in 2019 for the Padres. He had to go through a second Tommy John. He's looked good, the splitter, the velocity is also there for him. He could be a name to keep in mind for some important leverage innings and outs for the braves in 2023. And then

"Cover his baseball four ESPN, Dave, how you doing? I'm good. I was up at 6 a.m. this morning, buster watching Panama and Chinese Taipei in the world baseball classic. Just like you are, you're always up at 6 in the morning. Well, yeah, I got up at 4 o'clock here in Montana. So it was a little bit earlier than that. But it's fun to watch games that actually have some consequence. Like I love going to spring training games this year to see the impact of the pitch clock, but it's just something different when actually you could see people lose and get eliminated. That's just so much more fun. It is fun. Like you said, this year spring training obviously, you know, a million times more interesting than previous spring trainings. But I like the WBC, you know, it's something fun and even though maybe U.S. baseball fans aren't super into it, you know, it's a big deal everywhere else, especially over in Japan and Korea, you know, Japan. They won the first two. Didn't make the last two finals, a lot of pressure on that team to win it all this year. And they have an unbelievable team that does have a chance to win. I wonder if the fans Vis-à-vis the WBC, if they're going to fancy the United States are going to follow the lead of the players. I remember when the WBC first started, he's got a sense that the players didn't really care. The U.S. players, but increasingly, that's not the case. There's a conversation among those guys, you know, now you have Mike Trout leading the way. You got Adam Wainwright. At the end of his career saying, look, I want to participate in that. We saw the year when Marcus stroman was pitching in it. There was more excitement. It felt like it was building as they went forward. Yeah, no doubt. And trout, he's playing for the first time, the Dominican lineup has gotten a lot of publicity, a lot of tweets, but buster, especially now with Vladimir Guerrero junior out, the U.S. lineup is better. I looked at last year's numbers and based on 22 2022 numbers, the U.S. lineup is better. You got Nolan aeronaut on Paul Goldschmidt and trout and Mookie betts and Kyle Tucker and Kyle schwarber and Jeff McNeil, you know, Trey Turner, JT rail Muto. I mean, buster, I didn't go back. I wanted to look at some of the best all star lineups of all time. And I know the first All-Star Game in 1933, every player in the American American League lineup eventually made the Hall of Fame, but the U.S. lineup is one of the best lineups ever assembled in the Dominican lineup isn't far behind. So let's hope those two teams meet down the road. Yeah, and I just get a sense of that, you know, my conversation with players are playing in it. They just love the idea of going there and actually having the plate appearances mean something. You know, as one player, I'm not going to use his name in fairness to him, but he was talking about like, you know, I can get a couple of plate appearances in some exhibition game where no one cares. No one's really paying attention. Or I can go and have those bats where you have a higher level of intensity. And from what he told me, the conversation among the players is this might actually help you for the start of the regular season. It might be better prepared than playing exhibition games. We'll have to see about that. Some interesting news developing in the national league east, all three of the teams we see is major contenders, the mets, the braves, and the Phillies have all had some injury issues on. And so I want to get your read on these. Andrew payer came out of this game the other day with some elbow discomfort. The Phillies actually haven't forwarded information to reporters about what's going on. Scott Boris, you know, making an appearance in Phillies camp. They're gathering information they're telling us that to me, there's so many red flags and how this is playing out, especially for a guy who we thought coming into spring training had a chance to impact our rotation day. Yeah, we were hearing so many good things about him, even though he doesn't turn 20 until early in April. All indications were he had a chance to maybe even break camp as their number 5 starter. So yeah, you don't want to jump to any conclusions until you get more information, but certainly he was arguably along with grace and Rodriguez of the Orioles that one of the top two pitching prospects in baseball. So the Philly is at some point, at least they were counting on this guy this year. Now we don't know. Now we've seen when it comes to Tommy John injuries, you know, Tommy John surgery, and we don't know the Phillies haven't told us what it is. But we certainly have seen a lot of pitchers through the years have elbow discomfort, and that's where it winds up leading. There are a lot of variations now of elbow treatment. So it might be that he winds up depending on the severity of it, might be an extended absence might be something where he gets treatment for a short period of time and he's available this year. We'll just have to wait and see. And then react to the information when it comes out. Jose Quintana goes out with a fractured rib in his rib cage for the mats, it's a big loss. Yeah, no doubt, you know, one of their free agent signings had a real solid bounce back year last year after a couple of years and some injuries. So he was going to be in mainstay, doesn't sound like he's going to be long term, but they have an options here, David Peterson, you know, would now slide into that 5th spot. He was starting to relieve her last year. Very good underrated picture. That's really not much of a drop off. They still have Tyler McGill, who had some promising moments last year as a starter. So they do have the depth to survive without Quintana, you know. But it's a story reminder, buster, teams that make the playoffs are often the ones who starting pitcher stay healthy. Yeah, and last year, you mentioned about, you know, the question of how long he's going to be out, you know, the closest comp, I could think of was Chris sale, you know, who got hurt writing his bike. He suffered a fraction of ribs and it was months. It was months before he came back. And given Quintana's age, maybe they're careful. We'll just have to wait and see. The Atlanta Braves are hopeful that Kyle writes going to be ready by opening day, he's yet to appear in his spring game after having cortisone shot to address a right shoulder issue that shot occurred in January. First off, I don't think the braves are a team that really behind the scenes care about whether or not he's open for ready for opening day, I think their focus is going to be on hoping that he's ready for the season. Yes? Yeah, no, but no, absolutely. And it's not one of those wait and see situations, but look, we're expecting another dog fight in that division. The Met's braves, they tie last year, the Phillies might be right up there with them this year. So every win in that division is going to be so important. But you got to look at the long view here. You want Kyle Wright to be healthy in the second half and for the playoffs. But you also don't want to finish in second place. You want to avoid that, you know, best of three wild card series. So there's still a lot of pressure, especially in that division to be healthy and play well from the get go. And I was wondering sort of the impact that he might have physically after having this great season last year, 21 and 5, 3.19 ERA, a big step forward in terms of his production, the big leagues. But a lot of times in that case with a young pitcher, the next year, there can be a toll. I asked Jerry to poto about this win projection that bakota gave the Mariners 81.7. I did a double take, Dave, when I saw him, I'm like, what?

"Codified the farm system and had so many affiliates formal or informal and just had control of hundreds and hundreds of players and would either promote them from within or use them to acquire other more established players. So the 38 39 cardinals had 60 and 14 future all stars and then the 34 and 37 cardinals had 13 as did the 37 and 38 Yankees and it's all of those teams from that period of time. And Ryan continues those systems we're stacked. So for example, the 1938 cardinals system, these players, they had Elmer riddle, Johnny hopp Ken raffensperger, Marty Marion max lenier Oscar Judd walker Cooper, Emil verban, Harry brashen, lupita, mort Cooper, Murray Dixon, red munger, Nick etten, whitey kurowski, Johnny sane, and Ryan included comps of more modern players for those old timey players just to give a sense of how much war one might expect from those guys and it's a lot, so he comped to basically having a rotation of Bumgarner sales, Strasburg, Wainwright, and Kane with anibal Sanchez and Jeff simard and company waiting in the wings with a Hall of Famer in a couple of very good players in the infield. So that's how much the late 30s cardinals were controlling. But since 1990, so more modern times, the brewers 6 is pretty competitive so the 2005 Dodgers had 8 in their system. The 2007 and 2010 reds also had 8 future all stars in their system. And then with 7, we have the 99 Blue Jays, the 2006 Dodgers, the 2008 reds, the 2011 Diamondbacks and the 2014 and 15 cubs. And I will include this post in the full list if anyone wants to check that out. So for example, the 2005 Dodgers had Carlos Santana, Chad billingsley, Hong chio, Joel Henry, Jonathan Braxton, Kenley Janssen, Matt Kemp, and Russell Martin all in their system at the same time 2007, reds had Devin messer occo, J Bruce Joey Votto, Johnny cueto, Josh Hamilton, Justin Turner, Todd Frazier, and Zack cozart. That's a lot. The most recent team with 6 is the 2017 braves, and they still have a chance at more. So they're 6 Austin Riley max freed Mike soroka, who is now Michael siroka. I read Ozzy albie's Ronald Acuna and William Contreras and they're still players with all star potential who could be added to the list Ian Anderson Kyle Wright, Joey manasses our man in AJ minter. So this kind of got me curious about what the average expectation should be because these are the high points when your system is super stacked with future all stars, but that could lead to unreasonable expectations, right? And I think at this time of year, when we're looking at prospect rankings and farm rankings, it's good to keep some sense of perspective here. You don't want to be like bob nightingale just taking a picture of the bigger base and not knowing how much bigger the base is than the smaller base, right? So you want to sense of the baseline. The base. Yeah, baseline. We should start measuring things in bigger bases. Like we do without two days, you know, it's like it should be its own unit of measure. Exactly. So the All-Star Game hasn't been around forever, obviously, but since 1945 or if we go 1945 to 2010, since more recent years may not have had a chance to have all their all stars hit yet, it's 2.6 future all stars is the average number of all stars to be playing in a team system in any given year. So 2.6 all stars somewhere lurking in your system. And that could be anywhere in affiliated ball. It could be you down to your Dominican summer league teams, your rookie league teams, these numbers may change. Now that there are fewer minor league teams and affiliates, perhaps, although, I guess they're just as many all stars as ever, if not more. So 2.6, that's sort of your baseline for how many all stars the average system in any given year will produce at some point in the future. And no guarantee that they'll be all stars for you and your organization just at any point in their career, there is actually an interesting study Bill James published this week where he found that historically exactly 50% of team value has come from players who had never played before for any previous major league team and 50% from players who had played for some previous team. So it's 50 50 for players as well throughout major league history, the average player has had 50% of his career value while playing for his first team and 50% while playing for some other team. So to say that your system might produce two all stars, well, they may not be all stars until after they go somewhere else. So from 1961 to 2010, so that's since the beginning of expansion, 2.45 is the average from 1998 to 2010. The 30 team era, it's 2.36. So more recently, it's really about 2.4 all stars. So it's not a lot, I guess, if we all dream on you look at your systems top ten and you think, oh, this guy's got an all star ceiling and that guy's got an all star ceiling. You know, it varies. I'm sure based on how highly your system is ranked. But on the whole, the average system, you're only going to get about two and a half all stars out of that system in the entirety of their careers. So I think you kind of have to keep your expectations in check a little bit about the amount of high ceiling talent that is going to come out of that system at any point. It's hard to develop players. Yeah, it turns out that baseball is hard, Ben. Yeah, and I also asked him to look at this another way, so not just with all stars, but number of future major leaguers, period, and then number of long-lasting major leaguers, so he did two minimums. He did like 600 plus plate appearances or batters faced, and 3000 plus played appearances or batteries faced. And the numbers, you know, they get pretty small, so he did this on a league wide level, year by year going back almost a century, and then he did it per team average. So if we look at like 2008, I guess, was the peak, at least the recent peak of the number of players in minor league systems in affiliated ball. It was like 7000 players were in affiliated ball in 2008. And of those 7000 in 2008, barring, I guess anyone who still hasn't shown up, although that would be tough at this point. Yeah. The number of future major leaguers is 950, which is, you know, a lot of future major leaguers, but that's out of 7000. So that's like 13.6% of all the players in affiliated ball will be big leaguers at some point, which matches up exactly with a stat that I had in the MVP machine about that too. So again, most players, they're not going to make it, which is probably not a huge surprise to anyone and including those players, but 13.6%. That's roughly the percentage that will be big leaguers of any kind. And then if you limit it to big leaguers who get 600 plate appearances or batters faced, then in 2008, you're down to 387. So that's about 5.5%. So about 5.5 will have even a season's worth essentially of playing time. And then if you want 3000 plus plate appearance or batters faced careers, then we're down to 86 guys that year and that as a percentage is about 1.2%. So if you're talking about players who will actually become established long tenured big leakers, it's really like 1% of all the players in affiliated ball. So if you're doing that on a per team per system basis, then the 9 50 for all 30 teams that goes down to about 31.7. So in any given team system in any given year, you're looking at roughly 31 32 future big leaguers for any team, not just for your organization, but any, and then about 13 will last for a season or so in the majors. And then about three two to three maybe will become long-lasting big leaguers, which tracks roughly with the number of future all stars. So you're at about 30 future big leaguers, maybe a little more than that, and then maybe like a dozen players who will last for a season or so in the majors. And then really, it's like two to three players will have long careers in the big leagues or become all stars.

"People were hospitalized. I'm Brad Siegel. For the Yankees have had some rough spots this season, but right now in late September, this is definitely not a rough spot. They are in a kind of a hot streak right now. They've won 6 straight, including a 7 5 win Saturday over the Red Sox. That means they've won ten of their last 12 and they've reduced their magic number to win the American League east down to three games. Aaron judge did not hit a home run on Saturday. He's gone four straight games without a dinger, but the Yankees did get three home runs besides him on Saturday. So they'll wrap the series against the Red Sox on Sunday and then head to Toronto. Thanks not so good for the mets. They were losers in Oakland ten to four. Jacob de Grom has been very steady most of this season, but he got bounced around and only went four innings. He falls to 5 and three on the year and things not great for the mets and also how about the Atlanta Braves. They're in Philadelphia and they double up on the Phillies and win 6 to three Kyle Wright is the first pitcher in Major League Baseball this year to get to 20 wins. The lead for the mets right now is only a game and a half, so things still a little bit dicey for the mets as they come down the stretch.
