If he ends up being Tom Brady's replacement, it would mark the largest experience gap by a team's week one starter over a two season period by a significant margin. There have only been two other instances of a 250 game experience gap between week one starters, and that was Peyton Manning to Trevor Simeon with the Broncos and Brett Favre to Mark Sanchez with the jets. So buck senior football consultant Bruce Arians, who was the head coach when they drafted Kyle Trask, has no concerns about the third year QB taken the reins despite his lack of experience. Take a listen. I think we're in good hands with Kyle Trask. I love Kyle, he's been there two years now, small Tom work, how to get there, Blaine gabbert was a great mentor for him. A guy that worked his ass off to get to where he's gotten and he works extremely hard every single day. He's got all the size. He's got the arm. He's got the statue of what we like. And he's mobile. Right now, I'm very comfortable with Kyle's our guy. Jeff, what else do we know about the box and their feelings about Trask? You know what's funny, Laura, when I started reaching out to people this off season within the organization, I kind of was like, hey, what about Jimmy G? Hey, what about just going down the list? And the response was actually like, hey, what about Kyle Travis? From there, and we believe that he's actually the best quarterback in the division. And I say that jokingly a little bit, but I think they are kind of serious about this. And maybe not from the standpoint that they're viewing Kyle Trask as being the long-term franchise guy. I don't think that they're trying to go that far in their statements, but rather, hey, look, we went all in with Tom Brady the past several years. We are now sort of paying the price for that. We're all on the same page with it. We all understand what we did. We got one Super Bowl out of it. And now we're going to see what we have in this young guy. I don't think it's that bad of admission on their part. And I don't think that wrong necessarily for them to say, let's give Trask a shot. Yeah, you know, when you think about Trask, I think a lot of people have forgotten what he was in college, right? We only saw him in limited play at Florida a couple of years ago, so Matt Miller back with us our draft analyst, remind us what type of prospect he was, the traits that Tampa liked from him as a Heisman finalist. Yeah, it is hard to remember what he was like there. And so much has changed. I think but Kyle Travis fits with Tampa. Wants to do, like Bruce Arians sit there. He fits that prototypical pocket quarterback, someone that does push the ball down the field very well. His jump from junior to senior season, that improvement was enormous. Now he did have Kyle Pitts, he did have guderian's Tony who were great pass catchers, but we saw a lot of that. A lot of jump ball. He trusts his guys. He puts the ball and catchable spots, and then we saw him layer the ball really well. That senior year to where it fits a back shoulder fade in the end zone. If it's a go route, if it's a slant, he's able to take something off of it, dollop different velocities, different speeds, but I thought he was the number 6 quarterback in that draft 5th, remember there are 5 in the first round, but I did have a starter grade on him as a second round prospect, someone who had some time to maybe clean up his footwork, improving his agility a little bit. He could be a starter in the pros. Yeah, a lot of those highlights we just showed there he was going toe for toe against Alabama in the SEC championship game in 2020, that Bama team went on to win the national championship. It was really good. Mina, what do you make of this idea that Trask will be the guy in Tampa? You know, sometimes as a football team, you just gotta be honest with yourself about where you are. And I think in doing this, it would signal that the bucks are being honest about the fact that it's a little bit of a rebuilding point, which, by the way, is fine, and some teams never do that. They're in a division with a team in New Orleans that refuses to do that. That shows up every year. A new suit and nobody knows how they bought it, you know? It's a different approach. And I think it is one that probably will serve Tampa well rather than chasing a free agent that might not get them over the hump because they don't have high draft picks. They don't have a lot of cap space, so it actually makes sense to me that they might sit this year out and then revisit the quarterback question next season. Absolutely. Caleb Williams sweepstakes here we come. When you think about college trash, if you find a franchise quarterback, then you're excited. If he's not a franchise quarterback, then you work on getting one next year. People don't understand how hard it is to win one Super Bowl. If you had to sell your organization for three years to win one Super Bowl and then rebuild, you take that every single time. Yeah. Tampa understands that and now they're moving forward. Yeah, just so we know about cap space, the bucks. Currently projected to be 58 million over the cap for 2023, over 20 million more than the next closest team in the saints. So interesting there. "The organization, they do feel like at least Kyle Trask is likely to be the guy in the center. I feel pretty confident that they're going that direction. Whether that's due to some salary cap concerns because they did go all in on Tom Brady the past couple of years to try to build around him. And now they do have to pay a little bit of that price. I still think that Jason liked the general manager is never just he's just not going to lay down by any means. But I think he also believes Kyle Trask has what it takes to be a winner in this league and he looks around the division and he says, well, we got the best quarterback in the division at the very least. So, you know, I'm not saying that means much, but I think that he at least thinks they can be competitive with Kyle Travis. Yeah, but we just saw there with projected cap space. That's what happens when you put everything in one basket to win a Super Bowl and thank God for them. You know, I'm thinking about contrast, he's probably like, man, I wish I could go back to my days at Florida when I was a starter for the last time and have Kyle Pitts, Cadiz, Tony, but either way, he does have some weapons there. You've been one of those weapons at times when there's been a backup quarterback. What is that like for the guys, at least there is some familiarity there, as opposed to a totally new guy. Well, I know you. You're in the room with me. We're at practice together. I see you every single day. The media doesn't see you every single day. They saw you in college, but they're not there. They're not in the film sessions. They don't really understand. And on top of that, when I talk about young quarterbacks, I'm always talking about having alpha dogs. Well, guess what? You got two. You got two right there with you. So he will not have a huge learning curve. They're all going to learn the same system together. Then I got to keep the Byron leftward system. They're bringing a system from Seattle like Robert Griffin just talked about so they are going to learn it together. And when you got Mike Evans and you got Chris Godwin, and you have admin company, you got something. You got gauge. You got something as a young quarterback. I've been in with young quarterbacks before as an older player that had played in this league and it wasn't as bad as you think, as long as they do what we need them to do, which is give me the damn ball. Let's get to the latest news around the league with our insider Jeff Darlington and Jeff. We begin in San Francisco with Brock purdy. What's the latest there? Well, Laura Brock purdy's surgery on his UCL has been delayed until March at the earliest. Doctors want to see the swelling go down in his elbow. Now this obviously delays the timeline for his return as well. This is going to be about a 6 month recovery, so if we do the math from March, we're looking at August before he can make that full recovery. Certainly allows him time to get there before the start of the season, but Trey Lance with a huge opportunity come training camp. Taylor luan was actually released by the Titans today the longtime left tackle. He's among those, including wide receiver Robert Woods, who are essentially salary cap casualties, the Titans $23 million over the cap they need to get underneath that before they can make any moves in free agency so low on. Longtime very popular player for the Titans is out of Tennessee. Another very interesting move, perhaps a little inside baseball. Daniel Jones has decided to switch agents. The reason why this is newsworthy, of course, is because we're expecting him to try to negotiate a long-term deal. The Giants would like to get a deal done with him, and if they can't buy march 7th, they will consider applying the franchise tag. The question of course here is the money involved by switching agents, Jones clearly believes that he can get more out of the Giants than they presently were planning to give him. We'll see how that works out for on Laura. Yeah, I think that's incredibly notable of a story Jeff, because he's going to be looking for probably a lot more than people really expect him to get, but that quarterback market, you know how it goes. All right, let's go to Dallas elsewhere in that division where Jerry Jones has his hands full this off season, putting a team together with 19 free agents to figure out who stays who goes. Who do they go out and get, right? As usual, Super Bowl or bust with a cowboy. So with that in mind, we proceed accordingly. Also, the cowboys currently projected to be $7 million over the cap this season. They have some key big names set to hit the market. Let's tell you about them on offense. Tony Pollard, and Dalton Schultz, both slated to be unrestricted free agents on defense, former first round pick, Leighton van der resh and safety Donovan Wilson headlined that list. So Robert, who do they need to make sure they bring back? I mean, they got a prioritized. I had two on the list, but I'm going to move it to three. It's got to be Tony Pollard. He's their leading rusher, the most dynamic offensive player outside of CD lamb that they had got to bring him back. And they got to bring back their leading tackler and their second leading tackler on defense. That would be latent van der este linebacker and safety Donovan Wilson. You don't want to let those key cogs go from a team that bounce Tom Brady from the playoffs and has the moniker of the only team in cowboys history to ever beat Tom Brady. All of these guys are extremely important to what the cowboys are trying to do outside of their star players. And last but not least, guys, they have to do everything in their power to draft bijan Robinson out of Texas. He does everything that Tony Pollard and Ezekiel Elliott can do and he's in one package dynamic playmaker. I think a lot of teams are going to really contemplate moving up in the draft to take him. Well, I think, you know, you certainly hit on Tony Pollock, no question about it because he did amazing things for them when they gave him the opportunity to carry the load. I look at it, though, play making abilities. CD lamb and Tony Pollard are really the only two playmakers on the offensive side of the ball. They have cap issues what they got to do is they got to go to some of those big money guys that have the large numbers and talk to them about renegotiation. And of course you kick the can down the road. Everybody does it. Not that big of a deal. But you need a playmaker. You got to go find one of these receivers that'll be available. There's a Robert Woods out there. You can revisit OBJ again. Then there are possible there could be a Deandre Hopkins, a Keenan Allen, possibly a Michael Thomas in New Orleans, could be available to you if he's healthy. So if you look at that and you say, okay, I need a playmaker when dak Prescott got Amari Cooper changed his life when they traded for him. Their third down percentage went up, they became a big time team on third down, so you gotta have playmakers in order to be successful. We know what

I'm a fix on football and now I'm kind of stepping back a little further. And then join life. Did you get banished to the press box, Bruce? Let's be honest. Tell me, did you get banished? You get sent there? Is that what happened? Yeah. There's new rules in play now. Okay. Which is what? See, I didn't even ask if you said the magic word, I just assumed that you did. So then you didn't at any point in time. Because I just remember, I just remember being on the sideline with mooch, when we used to do Thursday Night Football games, and he'd been so far removed from it. And he'd go up to the officials and he'd slap him in the thigh and just say, what was that all about? I could just see it just never really leaves you. It never really leaves you. So I'm wondering about you, Bruce. Yeah, I mean, trying to cut them out from the press box is really hard. And I know they can hear me, 'cause I'm hollering loud enough. Nice. So what would you advise them on the quarterback front right now? If asked in a meeting. I think we're in good hands with Kyle Trask. I love Kyle, he's been there two years now, small Tom work, how to get there, playing gabbert, was a great mentor for him. But just like three years ago, you know, you've got to search what's behind door number two. Three years ago, we never would have guessed Tom Brady was by door number two. And so you do your research. Do all your homework and then you decide what's best for you. And right now, I'm very comfortable with Kyle's our guy. So what did you see in Kyle when you drafted him that you know that you can unpack right now as the guy after Tom Brady, Bruce? A guy that worked his ass off to get to where he's gotten and he works extremely hard every single day. He's got all the size. He's got the arm. He's got the stature of what we like. And he's mobile. So now he's not a burner, but he's mobile enough. To do some things. So looking at all the young quarterbacks today, I mean, he's not four or 5 jaylen hertz type guy, but he can take him to a lot of things that help us win, especially with the players around him. And then I'm curious to know what you thought about the team moving on from Byron leftwich since I know the story, Bruce. You've told it here on this program and I know what he means to you. He was the guy that you took off essentially the couch. You took him out of his spot to say, I think you should be coaching. And then you wouldn't have taken the Tampa job if Byron wasn't coming with you to call plays to take that off your plate. And the play calling aspect off literally your health, which is what you referred to and I know that's what you're here to talk about as well. So what did you make of eventually Byron no longer now being with the team? It was hard. It was very hard for me. But it's kind of football team. And I handed it Todd for a reason. He's got to build it and his image and there's no hard feelings between the two guys. The philosophy just didn't match and so looking forward to meeting the new guys and getting back down there in the spring a little bit and working with them. But I've got all the trust in the world and Todd Bowles and but I feel terrible for Byron. I think Byron will still be a head coach soon and he should be. So have you spoken to Byron and connected with him? Bruce? Okay. Very often and just making sure see what he's thinking and where he might be heading to and make sure it's right for him. Yeah, exactly right. Because I know he and Brady, I saw them in Munich together. They seem to get along and obviously you want a Super Bowl all together.

Falcons show promise, but future depends on QB Desmond Ridder's upside
"Desmond ridder threw for a pair of touchdowns to lead the Atlanta Falcons to a 30 17 win over Tampa Bay. Bucks starting quarterback Tom Brady played most of the first half and broke his own NFL record for most past completions in a season with four 90. He was relieved by Blaine gabbert and Kyle Trask. We just had so many injuries and there were so many people going in and out and it just got, you know, it's tough. You know, you want to give other people opportunities to play. I played a lot this year. So good to see Blaine go in there and play and throw a touchdown, good sea cow play a little bit. "Then the Bears don't have 1/4 round They have 3/6 round picks the 24 37 44th of the round and then no seventh rounders, So we'll see what happens as we go, but it's nice to hear Bears fans. Excited instead of yelling and screaming and easily could have happened. It easily could have happened if they would have sat there and waited and stated 20. Maybe taking the offensive linemen out of a nice, But then they would have had to grab one of the other quarterbacks and went the second round of the third round. And not nearly as good as Justin Fields. Let's go to Evanston, Our guy, John. Hello, John. Hey, guys, How are you doing? Well, You know? I'm looking at the situation with fields and I think that a quarterback should be working over the playbook with him. Someone that Ah Pretty much went through the same thing when he was a rookie. And how he was taught to play book, you know, and just, you know, keep keep feels relaxed. Let him ask questions if he needs to, but Do it with a fine tooth comb. Maybe, you know, do some shortcuts in the playbook that maybe will help him remember the place. Um I just think it's Ah, It's a better idea. The letter quarterback work with him, and as far as when he should go on the field. I think that whoever works with them should relate to the coaching staff. You know when he's ready, because not only will be the playbook, but you've got to feel comfortable that he could read defense's and go on the field that actually Be comfortable with the surroundings. You know that he's dealing with and when he goes up to center, he has more than just a nice idea of what's going on. He knows what's going on. And he can make the play. He can call the play. But, you know, let him take his time. I don't want to see him on the field the first year because it's gonna take at least a year for him to memorize that playbook and get comfortable with his teammates. And what not be able to ask the questions that he's going to ask cause he's gonna ask questions during the game as to what's going on. And just the longer he takes to get in there, the more comfortable he'll be when he does get in there, and I think the quicker things will turn around for the Bears because you'll have a quarterback that Knows what he's doing and act like he's in charge out there. You know what I'm saying? John, I appreciate the call the one thing and I think that you know they have Nick Foles. I'm not sure what they couldn't do with Nick Foles. And they have Andy Dalton, and they are guys that it's interesting because in some sports, there's no reason for the quarterback to help the younger guy. Really? Because, um You don't want the younger guy to take your job and Andy Dalton and Nick Foles spot they're getting paid. They should do whatever they could do. It would only make them make things better for them. And from what we hear from Nick Foles and Andy Dalton. These guys are interested in helping the guys when Andy Dalton was signed back in March. He talked to the media march 18th and was asked if he would be okay if the Bears actually drafted a quarterback. I think that Z kind of part of it. I've been I've been the starter and help the backup throughout my career, and so I think it's what you can do to help the next guy, you know, we'll we'll see if that's the case and what we do in the draft, but No. I've got no problem with that. I mentioned how we had the guy from our legs. Dan Schachte on last week and our lands guy, just an awesome one. And this is really quickly just some of the highlights on Justin Fields, who they had listed as the third quarterback. They had a Trevor Laurence Mack Jones and Justin Fields. Okay, so you do not have Trey Lance there, then they head Zack Wilson. Fourth Train lands fifth. Kyle Trask, sixth. While Justin Fields won the Big 10 offensive Player of the Year award full seasons and was the second team All America in 2019 made it all the way to the national championship in 2020 came up short to Alabama, clearly talented enough on multiple levels to be a big time Pro has tremendous arm is one of the best athletes at the position to ever come out, and he plays with the slow heartbeat that exudes confidence. An ideal fit for a redshirt year. The NFL top shelf athlete competitors for the position that is a credible dual threat can create something out of nothing with his legs and will gain plenty of yards. After contact. He has the body of a thick running back, and we'll truck over. "So guys let's start off with the quarterbacks as this is probably the least eventful group especially because we just let mark handle this position group. Because that is his forte his speciality. We don't even really need to go through the ordering or anything specific with this one as we're going to do it the other position groups but the thing that's worth noting is it. Mark was highly reluctant to really go past mack jones and then after thinking it over he threw in kellyn mind. Davis mills kyle. Trask jamie newman. And that was pretty much it so i think we can all agree here that the quarterback class in in this year's nfl draft isn't exactly very good on the back end. There's a lot of really good talent at the top but as we start to push towards the second and third round like we don't even have a third rounder in this group. There's not really a lot of good options now. It doesn't really tier that way. Joe obviously you have the tran said quote unquote time trevor. Lawrence. and then. There's a lot of debate on who that actual second quarterback would be adjusted sales from ohio. State zack wilson from byu. Mac from alabama. It seems like the jets. Presume that zack wilson from byu. And i mean. There's a lot of rumors that three the san francisco forty niners are really all in on mac jones but we'll find that out next thursday. It's gonna be interesting. I mean outside of the top five quarterbacks in legit all five of them could go for the giants would be ideal for the new york giants. "He had games with 15 catches 11 11 13. He was the most dynamic and dominant player that I watched in college football this year average 16 yards a catch. He was my choice at number one. At two and three. I was kind of aligned with the voters. The vote went Devante Smith, then Trevor Laurence, then Mack Jones. I flipped Mack Jones and Trevor Laurence. I've taken a little bit of heat for that. I've heard the argument with Trevor Laurence is the best player in college football and was the best player career. I don't consider it a career award. I consider it a year performance award. In the fact of the matter is Mack Jones completed almost 10% more of his passes. Hey, through 12 more touchdowns than Trevor Laurence. He threw one fewer interception that Trevor Laurence Um, I did debate to be honest, with so much talent on Alabama. You had to kind of weed out. You know how much credit What do you do? Do you split the vote? How? How much do you Give it to Devante Smith versus Mac Jones versus not Jay Harris. I mean, how do you weigh that? Um, I wait. Kyle Trask. I had him. I think four you only vote for the top three. Trask had better numbers that the Mack Jones or Trevor Laurence. He also had three losses in the regular season. I just I had the head to factor that in in some way, shape or form and I knocked him down as a result, but it was easy to pick Devante Smith. I struggle with Mack Jones versus Trevor Laurence a little bit But I just thought the season that Mac had was better than the season that Trevor had. Trevor certainly had a better career. It was, you know, for Ohio State, and I think that the way that they played, you know not, you know, not having played since the Big 10 championship, and even before then they had, you know, games postponed and canceled because of covert things that they laid low that last port part of the season. When you know the rest of these leagues arrest, these conferences are playing a lot of their games. And, Yeah, they only had six games going into The you know to the college football semi finals, but they were fine and they clearly had the rest that they needed and the way they handled this stuff down the stretch, I think showed that they were more prepared than Clemson was by any stretch on Friday. Clemson did the impossible. They made Ohio State into the hero. No one likes Ohio State Unless you're from Ohio, Of course, the great state of Ohio where you went to Ohio State you love Ohio State, But like for me is a big 10 guy. I've never rooted for awhile. I am curious as you know those two teams so well especially from florida side What what are they thinking as they get one of their bitter rivals in a bitter rival that they are a prohibitive favorite. It is weird. Isn't it paula. Me and thinking back to win. This game was originally scheduled. I thought most lsu people felt like we're gonna get a chance to play later in the year we'll get healthier. We'll get miles brennan back. We'll be in better position. And i would argue that. They're actually in a worse position now than when they were originally scheduled in october. So i it's kind of a weird dynamic with a lotta florida. Fans looking forward to sec. Championship game next weekend for me. This is all about. Florida has nothing to do with their opponent. Lsu it's about getting right offensively full full-fledged dress rehearsal right costumes everything. Let's go for what we're gonna do next week. I i honestly been kind of disappointed with florida's offensive performance. The last three weeks dating back to the vanderbilt came. Because they just look inconsistent. They look like they walk through a haze periods of time. They look like they're not executing and part of it's their own fault for looking so good against arkansas in the second half and missouri against georgia. We set the bar pretty high for them but focused level has not been there for a full sixty minutes. I want to see all fence. Get back to executing at the level. They were early in the year defensively. Let's get some things shored up. Let's figure out how to keep from giving up these long passing plays. Let's get generate some more pressure on the quarterback. Let's be able to to penetrate and stop the run something. I thought they did. And that's really his main competition now and that we know we know what had next two weeks especially next week but what what what what separates college trask. If anything well first of all. I love both of these guys you know as a former receiver. I love the the accuracy. I love the the the way they re defenses and get the ball to the right guy. On what the defense is dictating But i would go back and say kyle. Traffic is probably had a tougher. Time than what mack jones at and. That's not taking anything away. From mac ios but look at how. Good this offense of line is for alabama. Look at how well they've run the football over the last six games or so look at what. Najji harris has done. Devante smith the reason why iraq jones's numbers look so good on the deep passes over twenty yards and no disrespect. Mac has been really accurate. But when you're throwing a guy that's five yards behind the nearest defender. It makes it a little bit easier. So again i think without the run game florida certainly not able to run the football very well. I don't think they're offensive. Line is the most consistent So i think the load that kyle. Trask bears a little bit harder to to carry them. What jones does now with that being said. Look at the weapons of florida has i. I don't think i've ever been able to say at least in recent years. That florida has more receiving weapons around their quarterback than what alabama does. They've been absolutely loaded but Looking at the way that that not only kind of is utilized trayvon. Grimes justin shorter. All those receivers. Jacob copeland has come on as well Forgetting about tony. Who might be one of the biggest Factor mismatch guys in the sec. Right now but the way. They use the running backs as well. That was something that we saw against georgia so a lot of different guys. That are helping. Kyle trask out. But i think with the advantage that alabama has on the offensive line and that run game to complement the throws down the field. I think kyle may have a little bit more of a impressive Season just because of how much he's had to do himself chris. Couple of games. I want to ask you about one. Particular auburn at mississippi state mississippi state has been up and down we. We've been through that conversation. But i'm really curious about auburn.
