"If Kurt Schilling gets in this year, it really bodes well for a guy like John Lester. Not necessarily in his first year eligibility, but much later, maybe towards the end of his eligibility. You got to witness this part of his game, which I found to be fascinating because I've just seen in you have seen a lot of players. You know, an issue pops up and they and I really don't mean this as a criticism. I mean it is an observation, a flaw will develop in a player and they melt. They don't know how to deal with it. I don't remember another situation comparable to what we saw with Jon Lester in that he clearly had this issue throwing to first base the industry, other teams began to focus on that and try to take advantage of it. And man, he battled. You know, he didn't ever clean it up. He never got past that, but between he and David Ross and Joe Madden and Anthony Rizzo, they battled. I thought that was a cool part of his career. It's a great example of what you said earlier about his toughness. He attacked that sort of with this mentality that it wasn't going to beat him. Okay, if he gave up the stone base, he was going to strand him at second base. But even better than that, buster, he found ways to keep that guy at first. Listen to these stolen base totals off the top of my head. When he came over to the cubs first time in the national league of league where you're going to run a little bit more, he gave up 44 stolen bases his first season with the cubs. It went from 44 to 28 to 19 to ten, four years later. That's what he gave up on the bases by the end of his run with the cubs. He figured out a way he varied his time to home plate. You're right, David Ross, Anthony Rizzo and later Wilson Contreras certainly helped him out that in that department. And then he was able to pick off I forget the cardinal he picked off and that really set the tone because he actually did throw over there and now everybody had it on tape that he was at least willing to do it and he really attacked it with that toughness. You mentioned, one other point I want to make regarding that towards the end with the cubs especially, his skills were eroding, right? He didn't have his fastball. His cutter wasn't even as good. He remade himself. He reinvented himself several different times. Even this last year with the nationals, a 5 O 5 ERA, and then he goes over to the Cardinals and has success there winning his 200th game. Several different times, he went into that video room and found his flaws and fixed himself to go on a little bit of a run. Then he might have that he might come back down to earth, figure some things out and go on that run again. So that's where that toughness came in. He didn't let those deficiencies beat him or define him late in his career. His career comes to an end in the midst of a labor stoppage, the owners locking out the players. You know, I wonder about this for John Lester in the same way that I wondered about it when Kyle Seager announced his retirement. If we had a normal off season, right? Where there was business taking place and contenders were filling spots and everybody knew for sure when spring training was going to open when the season was going to open. I wondered when Kyle Seager retired, you know what? I wonder if he would have continued playing, maybe not as a star player at the same salary, but if he would have continued playing if it was just a regular off season and he could just go about his business and stay in the same rhythm. John Lester is the same way. I mean, we saw at the end of last season with the Cardinals. He could be an effective pitcher. Yeah, I don't think so he was breaking down last year was the first full season in like a decade. He didn't reach 30 starts. He told me in the piece that I wrote, it was just getting harder and harder between starts and certainly in the off season to prepare for the regular season. I don't disagree with your sentiment. The game is right now unhealthy off the field, labor problems, and it's a little bit unhealthy on the field. We know it needs some changes in terms of the rules and the flow and the pace. So with those two things combined, I could see how there be some players a little down in the game might call quits. And John's case, I think it was more physical than anything. And he also offered this up to me that the pandemic opened his eyes, he's home with his family. He's enjoying his kids a little bit. So maybe without the pandemic, maybe a physically, he felt a little bit better at 38 years old. You might be right. But certainly the labor strife and the issues on the field in terms of just the flow of the game and everything. It certainly contributed to some people in their sort of negative feelings towards the even the game that they love and that they get paid a lot of money for..

"Be keen to be the world's best dad. He could want to hang out at what I imagined as a nice house in North Carolina. He could, I don't know. He might just can watch his brother be good at baseball. Right, yeah. The seekers as a family have done fairly well financially. But yeah, so, you know, I'm not super surprised that he did not find his way back to Seattle like you said for the relationship seems strained and I understand them not being keen on the 34 year old at that price even though I think he was useful and would have been useful to them, but you know he was a great player. It's clear from the response that he got from his teammates upon both his final game of Seattle and then the announcement of his retirement that he was a good Clubhouse guy and someone who seemed to be really beloved by his teammates. So I imagine that if you're a contending team with a young lineup, you surely would want Kyle seeker and your Clubhouse to help anchor the hot corner and also bring some guys along, but like you said, sometimes you get to decide when you're done. If I had a $100 million, I'd still do baseball stuff. I don't know that I'd be the managing editor of fan grass, like it's a lot of work, you know? And if I had like a $100 million, I'd be like, I'm gonna write about baseball when I feel like. Like I might. You know, I might say that. Let someone else let someone else make sure all the prospect lists are linked right and all the blurbs are edited, but yeah, I think if you ask most 34 year olds, hey, you have a $100 million you're going to work anymore. They say nope. Done now. Well, congrats to Kyle Seager on a successful career. Yeah. Seeker you were bound. All right, so there is one little bit of baseball news that came out last week that I overlooked meant to mention last time when I was talking about how there had been no baseball news. Technically, I guess this is not news. It's just reports on something that had already happened. But there was an AP report about payrolls and about the stagnation or even decline in MLB payrolls and I guess they ran the numbers just recently. And so this came out in December 21st that MLB payrolls dropped 4% in 2021 compared to the last full season so that's 2019. And the total player payroll 4.05 billion was the lowest in a fully completed year since 2015. So part of this obviously is just pandemic and lower attendance and all of that and maybe decreased revenue, although I have not seen the 2021 MLB revenue figure announced yet probably sometimes soon we'll see that. And then you'll be able to calculate a percentage that is going to the players at least of the revenue that is considered baseball revenue by the baseball owners. So partly it could be that revenue also declined slightly or stagnated in some way. But this began prior to the pandemic that the growth in payrolls had slowed or stopped or even reversed itself. This is the lowest since 2015. That was years before the pandemic. So it's not just that. And I think this kind of encapsulates the lockout, right? Like if you needed one number to explain to people why there's a lockout or why there's a work stoppage or why the players and the owners are not on the same page. It would pretty much be this or if you were going to point to a single metric that showed why the players are more resolved to not just kind of agree to the status quo than they have been in the past. It's this. It's because the status quo is not the same. And it is not constantly increasing as it was for decades. It seems to have actually taken a step back. And there are a lot of reasons for that. We've talked about them the different spending patterns in free agency, the fact that more of the production is concentrated earlier in players careers when they are not making as much money, the changes in pitcher usage and how that has affect the way that pitchers are paid as a group, the fact that teams are more reluctant to hand out long contracts and big contracts to players over 30, et cetera. We've talked about all of this, but the numbers are pretty stark. And you can kind of understand, I think why the players are holding the line more than they have been in the past because the line has moved, and not in their favor. Yeah, I mean, I know that we will never have a complete picture here because we don't have access to all of the team's books, although we do have some insight into some of them based on the filings that the parent companies for the Blue Jays and the braves have to do. But I know we're never going to have a complete picture, but you get a good sense of the general direction that this stuff is going, right? And I think that there probably isn't going to be a situation where the players are able to successfully claw revenue away from the sort of ancillary parts of owning a baseball team from wrigleyville and whatever, you know, the Diamondback skirt for having a sportsbook and chase next year and the Mariners get from their brewery operation or whatever. Over there. I think that that stuff is going to unless and perhaps even if the players submit to some kind of formal salary cap, but you get a sense of the direction. And so you say, we can't touch that money, but the stuff that is pure baseball. We need to at least keep pace because there is so much money being generated by the sport. We are the ones that are primarily responsible for that. And if we're going to have this feel like it is a productive exchange for both sides, this needs to get sorted sooner. And given what we know about how teams think about value and compensation, I think a lot of it is just going to have to come down to getting guys paid earlier and more across the board. So it's pretty telling. I do like how we have these moments. They are often in the midst of negotiations when we are just reminded of how much money there is in the game total, and sometimes comes in convenient moments for ownership, right? Remember, during 2020, when they were saying that they were going to lose all this money and then we got news of their new postseason deals and it was like billions of dollars and it's like, right, this is a lucrative enterprise, right? It is a lucrative enterprise even when you sit on the franchise and just let it accrue value. Even if you don't sell even if you don't take out loans against that value, like this is good business for everyone, there is enough money to be had here to at least approach something that is fair. So it's a big business. It's a much bigger business than.

"So how's he posted a three three three. Era and four five nine fifth in twenty two aa games this season he was called up on september seventeenth to pitch against seattle after the aforementioned brady springer went on the i l. with right upper arm inflammation. He pitched four innings and gave up four runs on to run shots. Jared kalmyk in a game. The mariners would win sixty two though he also struck out. Kyle seager and jake fraley. So thank you to francisco for that question and to ryan for his assistance with the stop loss and we have now met another major leaguer cool. I actually didn't doubt denny's totals there when you've been there for fifty cents bigger feasible number. Yeah yeah it definitely seemed like a feasible number and as i said an impressive number nonetheless. One whenever you've been in the game for fifty three years you're just gonna have seen so many guys. It's just like the the well of perspective. In sort of knowledge you have an experience with the game over that long stretches. Just really humbling to me candidly. Alright we will leave it there so that folks can try to listen to this before. "You ask them about what is going say. Well i think he's gonna say most of all these really good. He thinking i really believe he is. He's at the right age. He's twenty he's going to be twenty two when he starts next year. I don't think he moves backwards ever again brought. That's not say doesn't slump. But i don't think we see what we saw at the beginning of this year for him like where he's just not to happen. He's now kinda got that figured out. There was nothing left or he would. That would not have happened to him at triple a triple as worse than it ever was. We talked a little bit about this throughout this week. Like there's nobody there so any bad habit that he has he can get away with against minor league pitching because all of the any somewhat. Decent pitchers are already in the big leagues between expanded rosters and covert listen injuries back and forth. There's no one left. And aaa whatever he was doing there he could get away with it. He had to come up here and figure it out and then when you find out and talked to some folks who say look twenty two is when twenty two twenty three is when really good players figured out they. Just take a leap. They just get better whether they're in the minors majors doesn't matter they get. They get better at that age and so next year when he comes back here at twenty two. I think the expectation is. He's comfortable he's figured things out. He understands how to fail. He's seen it he. He's gone through and cleaned up some of his bad habits. And i think by next year. I think scott would say the same thing. You're gonna see jared kalmyk. That is ready to start really contributing and maybe not carrying this team yet. You might be year too away from that but really starting to show what he's made of and that is the case. Then jeff passan right. Is it still going to be three to five years with you. Well no he said. That's a to a bishop. No i think what. Jeff means three to five years before they're like the astros a dominant team. That is filled spitting out right. Everything's done and you're spinning. Our prospect after prospect doesn't mean that you can't make the playoffs next year. That doesn't mean that depending on what you do in the off season that the next two or three can't be really fun but that you're not a perennial. Everything is working. All of these guys are at the big leagues. The machine is is is running in the building phase three to five years. You've finished the building phase and now you're in the maintenance phase right. They're going to be building still for a little while. But that doesn't mean you can't get real good along the way s and i and i think next year and especially the year after that because i think julio will come up next year i don't think mean it's unlikely that he's a great player for them next year but we said the same thing about kalmyk a year ago. It is hard to be great until you're older. Who has has fundamentally different than jared kalmyk is seemingly the ability to play loose. That's the one trait that he has and some of the guys that you've seen with the ability to play loose that have just exploded onto the scene in baseball malaysia. Three or four years. The opposite of mike zunino. It's the opposite right. it's yeah there there's an it's a good point come up and they let it go still. He comes up next year at twenty twenty one. Twenty two we'll say no it's not twenty two. It's twenty one hundred twenty two. I think he plays twenty twenty twenty one twenty two. We're mixing month missing months. Why can't just let a good point lie. You've made a good point. Why do you have to tack on with something extra. you're like. Hey dad can we do something fun. Yeah can we do something fun and balloons and wrestle and can we jump off this like no. We're just going to do the first fun thing. You just like excessively excessively. Howdy you've given. You've you've made a good point. Why can't you just let that be enough. You gotta ride the wave similarly. What you. I heard you saying this week. Sesame was everybody hates me. She got mad at me shit. How'd he doesn't feel that way. I don't really care look. You're projecting it onto him cares. How okay. You're some questions when i was talking about helmick this week about whether or not his teammate house teammates feel about some of the intensity. My impression is that they like it. What do you think feels that way. I don't. I don't see any discord synced and watched any of those guys. Now you know. I think kyle seager and mitch haniger marco gonzales. Each of those guys are wired a little bit differently too but like you said man when he goes five for seven with a couple homers in doubles and he's producing when he's eaten a big old fat slice a humble pie heke ate half the pie. Heke ate the whole pie on the on the back down to coal when he got sent down and he came back. I think you gain a level respect from your vets in your peers and you come back and produce and august numbers to september numbers have been positive. Yeah i don't. I don't get any. I don't get any stink. I and looking for that and you know my psychologist. I put that on trying to monitor it. I don't say by the way. Julio is twenty. he'll turn twenty one december. Twenty ninth okay. All of next year at twenty one twenty-one right there'll be no twenty two twenty two a month after the seasons come on. he'll be twenty two months after this. What are you talking about. Stop exaggerating drawn. Take the analyst. Justin says to me you're wrong. You get nothing. Good day day. Day sir enough. You're just flat out wrong. He'll be twenty one in twenty two. This is started in nineteen to twenty twenty one twenty two. Who would've known it's right in the middle amazing amazing nineteen twenty. I said twenty twenty one. He's on my god. Howdy you're an amazing human being.

Lance arab begin the season but until then they're in good hands with jimmy. Well i'll tell you. What are you basing that on the quarterback. I'm basing my pick on the quarterback as well. We're gonna find out this year whether matt stafford is actually a great quarterback who had no chance on a terrible franchise or if he was a good quarterback who couldn't elevated terrible franchise. I believe it's going to be the first of those. I believe in stafford and everything. We're hearing coming out of there and of course they're going to be optimistic but everything we're hearing coming out of. La is that the team is teammates. The organization are blown away by how good he looks early. I know they are thin. Based upon how much money. They're spending on about five or six players. But i believe that they're good enough. "Again. This was after saturday's loss. My focus will always be on the team And nothing more than that. I mean we gotta. We're going to win games and you find focus is not there. I'm disrespecting everybody wearing these. So i'm on and on but good answer. He's not really talking about his job and he knows that his jobs on the line just like everybody else does. I wonder michael. Who's components agent. Do we know Might be. I actually think it might be. We'll see google it off tonight before that series with washington. The boomers alluding to begins tomorrow as for the yankees to nothing lost to the mariners. Kyle seager snaps the scores scores. It is does represent what eighty percent is amazing. How many guys who represents or lisa's firm does Lucas limpkey suffered the loss charge at the two runs in the eighth inning. Here's aaron boone. Give the seattle pitching lots of credit as his offense was. Shut down against kukuchi. I i actually thought we took a lot of good. Tough at bats. And then they're they're penn which you know it's a good bullpen. They can match up and you know they. They held us down. We had a couple chances there but but they never got own to count. That basic came on an own count. Was that the cow raleigh. Yeah what happens now before the game a couple of things here. Anthony rizzo tested positive for covert nineteen. Oh he goes to the cove list. Aaron boone pre-game gotta roll like of course concerned but will continue to the best we can with it and try and navigate it and while navigating came in the way of luke void struggled yesterday. Now he's still a yankee despite having rizzo here and you can hear the disappointment in his voice. Yeah was a weird spot. Obviously glad he's a part of team I get it. I haven't been around a lot to share now. Is i guess. The trade talks to as well and although we is still here and again did play yesterday but disappoint. Here's the thing. I don't understand so as i understand it. He is not. That's what the reports are. Yes okay john hayman even put that out there okay so then so if he puts it out there the you gotta believe it. I guess so. The question is does he have to go about his day in his daily business differently than everybody else the way the. Nfl is requiring its players donated. I don't think so. I think it was more of a teen thing wasn't a team threshold thing. At the beginning of the year it was teams. Reach seventy five percent. Then you can go about things this way. But if you're below that then you gotta go about things this way so. I don't think it's an individual aaron. Boone also said you know we in florida there and you know florida's exploding with the delta varian so i don't know whether or not he has the delta variant. Does he have the real. What does he have. I did read. There's no way to tell the difference. I believe i don't think at this. Why are we talking about while we talking about different strains of we can't tell the difference i think he can. Are you sure. I thought i read something. Because when stuff where it's like you know the delta varian is now the predominant strain such true they have to know it's the delta variant. Then maybe thanks it then all right yankees and kansas city tonight coverage on the fan at seven. Thirty and terry francona recovering halmi had hip replacement surgery last week. "Tough to send that signal to your fans and tear players when you're as close as they are just go and buy the standings which is what ultimately matters more so than the run differential which has been quite poor for them but still. It's tough to give people the impression that you're raising the white flag at least as we speak now or at least not improve your team and possibly make it a bit worse. When they're in the position they're in ryan devesh asked kyle seager about the deadline and trying to win now. This is on sunday and see your said that one. He was asked whether the team should add at the deadline. And whether they should be a team. That's winning and sears. Said you always want to be on a team. That's trying to win right. Like are suddenly the pass at some point. It has to be about winning. That's the goal of baseball. You don't necessarily always want to be playing for rebuilding doing that stuff especially for me kind of where i'm at. I want to be playing for something bigger than myself. I want to be playing for something big and you can feel how much the city is just starving for it. You can see it with the fans. Its been way too long. Obviously but yeah. You have to be about winning. And then he goes on to say he want that. Obviously right you want people to believe in you. You want them to feel like we're doing a good job and this is the team to go for it. I think it's been preached about this rebuild. So much but i mean we're right there on the edge of this thing so certainly you would like to have them make moves and get the team as good as we possibly can and knowing me personally. I mean good lord. I'd like to make a run out. And i think that that sentiment is is echoed by certainly by a lot of people in that clubhouse and a lot of fans in seattle and lakers Starting off when asked like. I don't think that this team is as good as their record. I think there's a good reason to believe that they're quite a bit worse. But it's not as if the only option they had was to sell or do nothing right. They could have tried to to add in a way that might have had a bigger impact this year. And i don't know. I don't care for it then well good for the astros. I guess who now get always be as a team is like our division rival. You know what are happy. Yeah we thought houston so they get another good dominant right handed. Setup man for ryan presley as opposed. So that's something in. Toro had not been contributing tonto their major league team this year so not wasn't a lot there in terms of twenty twenty. One that is he is hit. Much better in the binders is still pretty promising player. And who knows he. And joe smith might be better than grave. The rest of mris stranger things have happened such as the mariners having the record that they do in the first place all right well we will see if anyone else makes a move before we finish this episode so moving onto a couple of emails. Here's one that is tiny related. And i was planning to segue from my hotan banter to this question until we were rudely interrupted by jerry dipoto but this question comes from eric who says i've been thinking about maximizing the otani entertainment value along with encouraging the development of two way players. Ohtani is once in a century but i wonder if more teams will be willing to allow two way players more time on both tracks after seeing him. Forgive me if you've already talked about this possibility on the podcast. But i think what the hopeful edition of the universal the h. It's time to create the pitcher slash d. h. position. It's an nc double a rule where a pitcher can stay in the game as d. h. after they removed as pitcher games were otani is starting on the mound and batting second are probably the most exciting games in baseball. He just stole second game. He starting as i type this. If a team is really willing to bench a hitting specialist to allow their pitcher to hit why not let him play all nine innings it would still be rare but incentivize the two way player. So erik is i suppose. Essentially advocating for the all star game exception for otani to be made in any game in which otani is pitching or any comparable two way player. If there ever were one but but i mean like sure i love that because i wanna see as much otani as possible but i think given his rarity as why this won't happen right because there's no incentive for anyone else in the league think this is a good idea really right now that's true. It's basically like an advantage for the jolson otani rule into the rule book. I mean and maybe maybe seeing otani and and being able to really maximize the the performance. You get out of him. Maybe that incentivizes teams to think more creatively about two way players and to see the real potential upside to that. But i don't think that most teams in baseball are in the practice of granting one team like a competitive so that is a problem i tend to think of things from the the maximizing otani perspective worser than the competitive perspective. But yes. yeah. I think that i want more people to think about the world the way you do band but i think that seems unlikely in this particular moment but it is an interesting approach to take to try to resolve this tension around. You know pitcher sitting 'cause league if you have a couple of guys who were halfway decent early on you have incentive to really try to develop him as hitters and and i. I like rules being in place that incentivize teams to think about the rosters creatively and to not simply stand pat but despite all that beautiful imagination i i think unlikely i asked michael balan about it just my designated college baseball consultant and he said he likes the rule. At that level. There are a lot of two way players in colorado of course and he said there's some things that doesn't account for like if you move a player field position to the mound. You lose the at least in college baseball. Which was a problem briefly for arizona. When bobby dow beck was there closer and he noted that it also opened up a weird tactical loophole in college that they used to use at vanderbilt where they're coached him. Corbin would write out his lineup card and put a starting pitcher. he wasn't going to use at d. h. And then not reveal who his actual h was going to be until that spot came up in the order. Kind of like the phantom h that earl weaver use to use in the majors until that was banned. But other than that. Yeah in college. I can see why it makes sense in the majors yet. Maybe not as much it would be fun and it would be nice for otani but maybe not so nice for everyone else but maybe in the future if a bunch of other two way players come along so that it wouldn't be as explicitly one team rule or orban we lean into it and we think about what are the. What are some of the other guys where you would want to see. A single player rule Yeah actually we gotta a suggestion for an offseason draft episode of rules that were named after or prompted by one particular player which would be a fun one. We can file that away for a future winter episode when we're not in trade deadline week but they're quite a lot of those so so here that everybody were filing it away..

"Sunny. In a couple of systems. There is uncommon sunshine now in downtown Seattle and our current temperature 70 degrees common news time. 3 35 President Biden today announced the pullout of U. S. Troops from Afghanistan will wrap up August 31st. Our military and intelligence leaders are confident they have the capabilities to protect the homeland. And our interest from any resurgent terrorist challenge emerging are emanating from Afghanistan. But what happens to Afghanistan once American troops are gone? That the jury is still out? But the likelihood there's going to be the Taliban, overrunning everything and owning the whole country is highly unlikely. The president says he intends to maintain a diplomatic presence in Afghanistan with more on what that means and what we learned today we're joined by ABC's Andy Field in Washington, D. C. The president says the U. S will continue providing Assistance Andy how so? Well, that's a good question, certainly not going to be militarily because virtually all the troops except for a handful will be left there. One of the big issues here is the United States, dooming that country to be overrun by the Taliban. Now the president took a lot of questions on that today. You played a little bit of that. But he continued to emphasize that this is no longer an American problem. We did not go there. The United States to build a nation or to protect the Afghan people. We went there 20 years ago to get Osama bin Laden, which is where he was hanging out and to stop the terrorist threat that was coming from that nation, Uh, sending terrorists to the United States, the president said. We accomplished that mission several years ago, and there doesn't seem to be a mission anymore for the United States there to do anything that the goals haven't been accomplished. So in terms of Ken The Afghan government protect its own citizens, he said. They have 300,000 troops. The U. S has trained them spent 20 years doing it. They've spent trillions. The U. S. Has spent trillions, building air bases and helping equip the Afghan military and it's really up to them. No, they have certainly three times the forces that the Taliban have, but it's up to the Afghan government. If it has the will to do that, and the Afghan people who decide what they want to do with this, But there are so many reports that the Taliban are sweeping that country, and it's Like the president's answer is how many more lives do we need to lose? If you're saying we should stay longer? Yeah, that was his his message to Republicans in Congress. Specifically Lindsey Graham, who keeps saying This is a disastrous mistake. But Lindsey Graham once we get into a country, Lindsey Graham has consistently said We shouldn't leave. And what's interesting is that Joe Biden and Donald Trump have a lot in common in this is that they both said. It's long overdue that this longest war in American history is over an American lives stop being risk. Here. We lost more almost 1500. Americans dead in this war, 20,000 wounded countless others coming back with with PTSD and others. And he says, Really, I he doesn't see another reason to risk any more American lives. In what is basically become a civil conflict inside Afghanistan and sounds like offering civilian humanitarian assistance, trying to help the rights of women and girls, but also said something about promising to help the people who want to come to this country who helped us during the war. Yeah, he sent his message to those women and men is clear. There is a home for you in the United States. If you choose will stand with you, just as you stood with us, he says about 1000 have already been moved out of the country into the United States or other safe havens, But there are two Tens of thousands more who feel their lives are at risk simply for having worked for the United States or for the allies and worked as translators worked on on air Force bases, maybe even not the military capacity that they'll be searched out and killed and that's becoming increasingly big problem in Afghanistan because moving all those people, the president was asked me, why don't you just move them all to the United States and then process the visas here, and the president said he'd love to do it, But US law prevents him from doing it. And he's asked Congress to change that law so we can put Take the people that held the United States all these years. ABC is Andy Field from Washington, D. C. Thank you, Andy. Thank you. Word out of Washington. Members of Congress who voted against certifying last year's election will not be getting any more donations from Toyota. We hear both sectors are operating as usual today and tomorrow many companies around here, including the one I work for declare the holidays they will observe before the first of the year, and not all federal holidays are treated equally, so it may be worth checking in with the boss today. "All right, as I welcome everybody on this on this Sunday morning. Good morning, everyone No, it's an early start. As we ease into the day. The sun is out down here in Arizona, and hopefully wherever you are, as we get ready for baseball says we ease into Sunday morning, he had a Quite a show last night. Then that is Bill ask you an extra innings. But Bill the game itself had everything you could ever want in a baseball game. It didn't end right. But boy, that was an exciting game last night, so as we Take it easy on Sunday morning. How do you feel? I'm doing great, Marty. Thanks again and good morning to you and all the listeners an exciting game. I was this disappointed in middle relief in the seventh inning, not thrown strikes. I mean, that's one thing. Gabe Kapler keeps tone us that He wants his bull Pinto work fast and throw strikes. And sure enough, it backfired with the walk to Gonzalez and in a hit by pitch, and then it just fell through in the seventh inning. I think the bigger question for me, Uh many, many, many good things and the professor is going to be ready. He'll be all of this in a few minutes, But the big thing for me was McGee. Bill because this is a guy who didn't pitch that much last year for the Dodgers, and they use them all the time that Rogers. They used all the time. He's got a rubber arm. It's not a problem. But from a G As I said earlier, if he throws 10 pitches, maybe six or at the top of his own and four aren't and the four there aren't or sort of BP fastballs right down the middle and Stallings made him pay last night, so Worry about Maggie more than the vault and Selman because they're replaceable. But McGee is the guy. You're absolutely right and even the pitch to Reynolds that hit down the left field line. He's getting too much of the strike zone. We talk about elevating the fastball up and getting to the knees, but he's missing his spot what he needed to. And of course, the bald Stallings was almost right center cut coming into the right hander. And, of course, Stalin's hit a line drive out. You know, good and bad and night before gives of a basic but strikes out the side yesterday, Frazier still leads off with that base hit to left field and sure enough, he's back and stretch and he's back into a stress inning. I'm right. The one with you? I don't know if you can go back to back with him right now. Yeah, we'll see. So how do you like getting up this early doing the show? I'm up early, Marty, just like you. It's just that voice. I die. I don't want that morning voice work, and I've had a couple cups of coffee and Last night just had a live postgame. Of course, The callers were fired up about the bull pin and And I had a couple great interviews. A lot of people really enjoyed it. And it was this a longer day for me, but I enjoyed it. I love talking baseball just like you do. Yeah, it was. It was uninterested in game and you know it is Sunday morning. We always like to take a deep breath is Usually were on nine o'clock 10 o'clock. People just waken up now six a.m., I think mostly it's farmers. Com Waking up right now, you know with us, but you know we're at the quarter pole. This is 40 games today. And there's 23 wins here. So you know you multiply that by four. That's 92. We got wood on Keller today, and the giant should be a strong favorite today. You went today. That's 24 at 40. You know that's a pace for 96 Tell you what, Why don't you read the right if they get to that point, That's a successful year. No doubt about it, especially when all the experts were saying they weren't even gonna win. 80 games be one of the best years and Giants history but waking up today, seeing Kyle Seager get his hand broke. I didn't see that till this morning and he got hit by a pitch and he's on the aisle with broken hands. So The Dodgers keep mounting up these injuries. And, of course, yesterday we talked about Albert Pool halls. And somebody wrote Can Albert play shortstop? It was pretty funny guys. Yeah, Lux is gonna move over and Munsey and Pool House is going to place of first base now because the injury to seeker along with the player they got from Tampa yesterday, another first basement on they're going to split time it first so that it'll be next week and art. We got playing to do with Bill's Got a nice interview with Bob Walk, one of the TV analyst for the Pirates Coming up carry, you'll be with us, Bruce Jenkins, but We're going to take a break and come back with the professor, the third base coach of the San Francisco Giants, and all the things that happened this week was like going to school every day. So we'll chat about baseball with the Professor Ron Wotus. Right after this talking baseball with Marty Laurie Lasky and carry Crowley Okay, NPR 1045 and 6.

Seattle Mariners CEO Kevin Mather under fire for comments, releases statement

"Go badly for that team. Generally it does otherwise. That would not be talking about that team. Because they never do anything right. They never do anything good. So if I'm talking about the Mariners, and I'm talking about their president and their CEO, Kevin Mather. He probably did something really stupid. And then he and they are probably about to get wrecked for it. And if I'm talking about the president and the CEO, talking to the Bellevue Breakfast, Rotary Club It's gonna go horribly for everybody, and that's pretty much the result of him running his yap to the Rotarians earlier this month. You see, he was speaking to the breakfast Rotary Club on February 5th. Those comments became public yesterday and immediately went viral. So why is that? It's because, he said, the quiet part out loud and said so on pretty much every single topic imaginable. Like you know, the speech to the Rotary Club where nobody ever says anything noteworthy? You know what's an all timer when you've got a guy like that, having to issue a statement, which includes the following line, and I quote I've been on the phone most of the day today, apologizing to the many people I have insulted, hurt or disappointed in speaking at a recent online event. Unquote at a boy Ste. Hot champ. How the hell could anything that happens at the Rotary Club go so horribly that you have to spend a day apologizing to all the people they even salted and hurt or disappointed. I mean, how dumb would you have to be? How bad would that speech have to be to warrant an apology like that? A statement like that from the CEO of an MLB team answer. Really, really dumb. And a really horrible speech. The hell was this guy thinking anyway? Clearly he wasn't my man's mouth was simply on autopilot. Check out what he said about that stuff about the fact that he admitted there was no way that he was going to call it their top prospects last season. Not because they weren't good enough, but because the team wanted to manipulate this service time if our major league team had had a Cupid outbreak. Or, you know injuries and we had to call people up from the taxi squad. We were a little short on players because there was no chance you were going to see these young players at T Mobile part. We weren't going to put him on the 40 man roster. We weren't going to start the service time clock. There were all kinds of reasons that if we would have had injury problems or a covert outbreak You might have seen my big tummy out there in left field. You would not have seen our young players are prospects playing in T Mobile Park. Check this dude out. I'm gonna gloss over the fact that a grown ass man An adult just used the phrase my big tummy. In public. I mean, normally, that'd be one of the more offensive things in a speech like that doesn't even crack the top 10 here. Honestly, the fact that he's openly admitting to being happy to putting a lesser version of his own team on the field in order to manipulate service time isn't even the most egregious a fence from this dope. I mean, we already know that goes on. We already know that a bunch of major league teams do that. But this moron is the only one admitting it in public and going on record with it. Except he wasn't done. He had more. Like saying that Kyle Seager is quote overpaid and that this would be his last year with the team. Like that's cool. I guess I'm not saying the Seeker has been lighting the world on fire. But maybe you don't hop on a zoom call with the Bellevue Rotary Club and put one of your key players on blast like that. And he wasn't done not by a long shot because he had some thoughts that he wanted to get off his chest about the second ranked prospect in the organization, Julio Rodriguez. Julio Rodriguez has got a personality bigger than all of you combined. He is he is loud he is his English is not tremendous. Good Take, bro. Good. Take Got a huge personality bigger than all of you. But his English is not tremendous. Yeah, I'm sure that's not the first time you've said that and I guarantee it won't be the last. But first he had more than you want to say about Rodriguez, because why merely irritate Why merely irritate one of your best prospects when you can go in on him and really piss him off. Everybody, says 2021. He won't be here till 2022 or 2023. Fantastic kid. Really big on social media. He loves toe. Get out in front. He loves the Mariners. That's a tremendous approach. Right? Everybody says we'll be calling this guy this year. The hell we will maybe next year. And you know what? Maybe even the year after that. Make sure we keep on sucking before he gets here. Why bring him up? You might help us. I love that he chases that with quote. Ah, fantastic kid. Really big on social
