"I didn't love the play calling. I didn't. I just thought The advantage that Air Force hat Was guys like David Cormier and Kyle Patterson. Brad Roberts is a terrific fullback. Probably better than his counterpart. On Navy Azi Daniels probably better than his counterpart on Navy. But the decided advantages were the athletes. Like Kyle Patterson. Like David Cormier. An I V and throw Micha Davis. Into that mix as well. Those are the guys where you look and you say they cause problems for navies defense. Or they will cause problems for navies defense. But Troy Calhoun might be sin. They do this? If you watch our force on an annual basis against Navy, they do this. They They go ultra conservative. Mm. Dive in. There's super married to the triple the traditional triple option style, the full back up the middle, and they just kept Pounding Brad Roberts over and over and over again, and Navy. Was doing a decent job of slowing him down. He wasn't breaking Huge runs. But they just kept at it and at it and at it, and they just You know, like navy was this Whoa! This brick wall. And Brad Roberts is the sledgehammer in the Troy Calhoun swinging it just over and over and over again. Just trying to break it. Break it, Break it, and you're like, Why don't you just go above the wall or around the wall? Like It's not the great wall of China like there's an There's an end to it. Just go around it. Just go over it. That's what I kept thinking during that game. Stop going right into the wall. Stop trying to pound away at this thing, but they do it. They do it and at the time, it's incredibly frustrating. But You can't argue with the results. Right. You can't argue with the results that the Falcons had They kept pounding away and pounding away and then all of a sudden his eat. Daniels calls his own number. Gets through that wall. Runs it in for a touchdown. And then Air Force, you know, just pulls away after that. I think there's a certain level of pride. That if you're an Air Force fan that you've taken the triple option, and you understand like that is The equalizer. In a lot of matchups, right is the triple option. That's what equalized but not against Navy and Army. So in the service Academy games. That's when David Cormier or Kyle Patterson, Formica Davis. That's where these guys why. Why should year in past years like a Caden Remsburg? Those athletes the threat of a vertical passing game. That's the separator. When you look at these two teams, not the triple option, but Falcons came in and said, We're just going to beat you at our game and your game. We're going to do exactly what you think we're going to do. And maybe they thought, 11 more step where it's like Navy might be expecting us. To go to the air more often. But they just kept pounding away and pounding away and you thought this isn't going to get it done. It's just not Navy is stopping them. And then all of a sudden They hit that last brick. With the sledgehammer that is Brad Roberts and the wall gave in Obviously a massive victory. Massive victory to go into that place And when is uncommon, even when Air Force has Some of the best teams in Apple is is still not A good place to go. Uh, some of the games there have ended in just Mount. I could still see Malcolm Perry. Right. I can still see Malcolm Perry. From the last time they were in Annapolis. Right. They have had games ended in the worst, most heartbreaking ways. So it is absolutely huge, even though they are a better team than Navy to go into that place and get a win and get a win that at the end of the day was pretty decisive. I didn't get A sense throughout the game, even though offensively I wasn't very high on what the Falcons were doing. I thought defensively. That defense wasn't going to Break. Against Navy, so It's good win. And now now you change. So you put the C I C trophy on the back burner For now, you look forward to the matchup globally field in a few weeks. Month or so. But now for Air Force Directly in front of them is a Utah state team that is Kind of surprising. In the way they started the season and now you're going from Almost a mere image of you Triple option pound the rock type of team to a Utah state team that loves to fling it all around the yard. I'll be curious, uh, to get The perspective of Troy Calhoun and any air force players that may Uh, stepped to the microphone tomorrow. On the difficulty of shifting gears. In that way, I knew they do. I know they do advance scouting, but you put everything into the service Academy matchups. And those service academies play a certain way, and then all of a sudden you flip the switch, and now it's a team that's going to spread you out going to put a bunch of receivers on the field. It's going to be an interesting test for Air Force because I didn't think that Utah State would be where they are right now..

"Tonight. I probably will just so I have something. Tonight is Coastal Carolina. Coastal Carolina. I think I got Matt 20 favored by 25 a half. That's where it still is. Coastal Carolina by 25 a half over the fighting Jayhawks of Kansas. Coastal Carolina likens themselves to be one of those. Well, we know they won't get in. But one of those teams that we're talking about like this is why you should expand the playoff because coastal Carolina they were last year. And they think they can be this year. I don't think they have any issue with Kansas. But that is a big number. I don't normally Do that, especially with college. But in the NFL, you're never gonna get lines. That big About Coastal Carolina. Laying 25 a half. Why not? Yeah. Live a little bit on a Friday, right? Tomorrow. Couple of local teams in action. Probably, though the biggest game of the weekend is Ohio State against Oregon. Ohio State's at last checked is still 10 point favorites. That's where I got them. And because I think that Ohio State wins and this will in the Pac 12 may get a bid to the college football playoff portion of the season. It's not Oregon. I don't know who will be. But Ohio State, I think Their their skill. Players are just On another level. They just are And I know that Justin Fields is not there. But They got C. J. Strauss got so many dudes he can throw to so many guys. I think Ohio State Is going to When Fairly comfortably over Oregon. And continue their run to the college football playoff. I think, CJ Stroud. Look, he wasn't awful against Minnesota, but he wasn't Great. I am Bryce Young was probably the of the quarterbacks that we're really looking at this year. You know, Sam, how wasn't great CJ Stroud wasn't You know, leaping off the television screen. D J. You The Clemson quarterback, Obviously, Georgia Kept him under wraps. But I think I think CJ's shroud is going to get better. I think a lot of these guys are going to get better. But that's the world we live in with called football. Is that a guy like Sam? How can struggle like he he did. And then maybe his Heisman chances go up in smoke with one game one bad game. So I think CJ Stroud obviously has room to improve. I think we'll see some of it. Tomorrow against Oregon and I like Ohio State. To cover Also like army there at home against Western Kentucky. Are in fact. I, uh Yeah, I see. There anywhere from 5.5 to 6.5 Point favorites. Where you look, I got him at six. And I feel good about that. I think Army takes care of business against Western Kentucky. You know, we talk about the emotions of the weekend. Everything like that. And look It's going to be emotional for A lot of teams right like it's not just teams based in New York or Service academies. But when we know it's gonna be, it's gonna Hit different It's going to feel a little bit different at West Point. To play on September 11th so Um Look, I'm not making my bet based on that. I'm just saying it's a contributing factor. To a certain extent. I think army is a good enough. Team that I think they can cover the six points against Western Kentucky now for the home teams. Air Force 5.5 Point favorites against Navy. Let me Just do a double check and make sure that still where it is, but I locked in my bed. Air Force minus 5.5. I think it actually might move Air forces way. A little bit. Yeah. See, Air Force in some places already is six. Point favorite. The money is about 50 50. On these two, but I, um I like Air Force. Look, they beat Navy handily last year. They're better this year, with all the turn back, guys returning. I think Kyle Patterson plays a big role. I think David Cormier has a bigger role than he had against Lafayette. We know Brad Roberts is going to be solid. Probably book him for close to 100 yards rushing, if not over it. Michael Davis around the outside. He only needed four carries to get over 100 yards. It won't be quite as easy. Against Navy as it was against Lafayette. But still, I think there force is the more talented team. And Navy has some major issues scoring despite many opportunities to do so against Marshall. So, um, I think Air Force covers the 5.5. Even in Annapolis. And then there's CEO. This game against Texas A and M It's AH, it's going to be a doozy. Now I got it at 13.5. It's held it held there. When it comes to my friends at Fanduel, but it's upwards of 17. Actually the best the If you're going A and M If you're betting on a and M The best place to go would be fanduel because they got a and M favor by 13.5. A lot of other places. Got an M 17. Point favorites. I think, and I said this the other day. I don't think they showed their full lot against UNC. I like Brandon Lewis a lot. I thought he should be. This starter. I.

"Perry. At least not yet. Okay? He certainly isn't a Keenan Reynolds, Okay? From a number of years ago. Uh, so Troy may say that to the media, but look his team. I don't think it's thinking that whatsoever. I think that you get out there. It's interesting, and Troy told me this one time coaches spend all week putting together a game plan to put together a game plan. Put together a game plan and then there you go in the game starts well after one quarter, Troy said. You realize that probably about 25 to 35% of your game plan is out the window because of what The other team was showing you right now and then by halftime. Pretty much all of your game plan is out the window Because now you're reacting to what you see on the field versus what you saw on tape. So I don't think they do the Navy quarterback scare Air Force well, only in the sense that they run the option and you've got to be disciplined and have one guy breaks down and somebody could go for a big game. So in that respect, sure, the Navy quarterbacks concern Air Force, but I don't think That our lines have guys who comes in with the credits and the Perry from a couple of years ago, so I don't think again. I think coaches tend to Kind of blow that up a little bit more than what it actually is. What would concern you, Um Arthur about the midshipmen. I think pretty simple. What would concern me is, if maybe has the ball for 41 minutes like they did last week. That's the bizarre statistic When you look at this Marshall scores, 49 points and 18 minutes. Okay, Marshall never stopped Lady Navy between the 20 yard lines up and down the field. They chewed up ton of yardage. But when they got inside the red zone, they couldn't finish. They had problems. You know, field goal blocked l kinds of issues. I think what you worry about if your hair force is if your defense can't get navies offense off the field. That's the biggest worry because Look, maybe is going to be better tomorrow than they were last week. There's no doubt about that. And if they ve hazard for 41 minutes, I think you've got a big problem on your hands. If you're the Falcons From the other side. And I've spoken about Kyle Patterson quite a bit this week. Because, you know, we I know you and Jesse were talking about in the booth when I was up there with you like In the stat sheet shows it like Kyle Patterson. You wouldn't even know that he played, um, because they were hiding him so much. David Cormier is another guy that they didn't really go to a lot, but he was out there. The legend of Cormier has grown over the years. How big of a weapon do you think he could be? Not just tomorrow but this season for Air Force. Well, he could be as big a weapon. As much as they throw to him. He can't hurt you. If you don't throw to him, and I think there force loves his potential. He's got great size and that sense of remind you of Jalen Robinette. But other than that, the book is really still out on them. You have to remember he was a freshman in 18. In 2000 and 19. He was, uh, involved in in, uh, circumstance at the Air Force, and he was a cadet, not in good standing. Last year, he took a turn back. So here he is. Now he's a junior this year, but nobody really has a feel for what he can do on the field, and I think you throw to him last week. Just to say Hey, can the guy even play and he did? He made a nice catch. I think they like this blocking on the outside, But the stakes are bigger tomorrow, so I think there's still a big question Mark. When it comes to David Cormier. He's got amazing talent. He's got amazing potential. I think the only targeted him two times two or three times at most. So and I think you did that more to give him some confidence going into this game. But look, force is going to throw some tomorrow. There's no doubt about it and they're going to need to do that to get the Navy defense thinking a little bit and they got two great targets in Paterson, but they didn't target at all last week. And Cormier and look at the guys are not worth anything unless you use it unless you get the ball to him, and then and then that's good and of air force can get the ball to them. Occasionally, it's only going to help the rest of the offensive. The rushing offense. Is that the area of his E. Daniels game that you want to see if if he makes some improvement is to be able to throw the ball downfield. Well, I think so. You know, he's he's played now. Seven games. If you look at his body of work hasn't even played a full season when you think about it. And he's into his second year. He hasn't played a full season. And I'm sure that you want to make sure he holds onto the football. You want to make sure that he's able to run the offense and by running offense that means get you into the right play. Make sure that your pitches are on spot. And make sure that you're reading is on spot. What I mean by that is when he's coming down the line. Does he keep the football Because you read that defensive end? Does he make that pitch that's running the offense. I think the passing piece of it. It's interesting. If you went to an air force practice, you would be amazed. Absolutely be amazed by how much they practice throwing the football if you saw therefore Practice. You would think they throw it 40 times a game. That's how much they practiced throwing the football. I think that he's an adequate passer right now. Is there room for improvement? I don't think there's any question About that. And so if you're looking at the Zeke and saying, Hey, is that a part of the game that you can improve on a little bit? I'm sure he'd say without a doubt. I'm sure the coaches would say that, too. And if he can That just makes him more dangerous with guys like Paterson and Brandon Lewis, Jake Speed walk out there and also David Corby. It will be an interesting one tomorrow to say the least. I don't have to hype up air Force and Navy because those of you listening, know how big of a game this is. The pre game coverage with Jim and Jesse Kurtz begins at 11 30 over on our sister station 7 40 K View our kickoff at 1 30. Should be a fun one. Jim appreciate the time in the insight and have a great call tomorrow. Thanks, Ryan. You bet. Be well. Jim Arthur Voice of the Air Force Falcons. My guest here on drive time sports. I Look, I asked him the question. What concerns you and The concern here was If they're able to do something they couldn't do last week. I mean, that was essentially the answer from Jim and I'm not saying that that was a bad answer. It's just that they got absolutely waxed. Last week by Marshall, despite playing the exact game that they wanted to They held the ball. They controlled the football. But they couldn't punch it into the end zone. And conversely, Marshall didn't need That much time to go up and down the field. I'm not saying it's a sure thing. Because the you throw the records out the window type thing. It kind of applies. But Air Force because of the turn backs was not as good of a football team last year as they are this.

David Cormier Jim David Corby Kyle Patterson Ryan Jesse Kurtz Jake Speed Brandon Lewis 41 minutes 49 points 20 yard Jesse 2000 Marshall Keenan Reynolds Perry last year Last week Seven games Jim Arthur

"Air Force will attempt to bring back the commander in chief's trophy. That process. That road begins tomorrow in an apple is taking on the Navy midshipmen. The manual here on the call as you come to expect on Saturdays with the Air Force Falcons is Jim Arthur. And he is kind enough to join me now. Jim. How is an APP Elice? It is sunny. It's about 80 degrees, Uh, breeze, which is nice. And a lot of people. We saw a lot of people in Annapolis today. Enjoying themselves and it still feels like it's a town that is primed and ready to see a very good football game. And there's obviously any obviously another layer to this particular matchup. What have you heard about what is going to take place tomorrow regarding the anniversary of 9 11 and what? How do you expect that? That kind of emotion manifests itself in the game? Well, I don't know if I do expect it to manifest itself in the game only because there's already enough emotion when, when Navy and Air Force place so I don't know if you're going to see any more of that, because it's already pretty much At a fever pitch, and it's important to say something here about that. These two teams, these two programs have a lot of respect. And mutual respect for another. You don't see that as much with their force and army and the only reason I bring that up is because you're not going to see two teams that hate each other out on the field tomorrow. You're going to see two teams that very, very anxiously want to win this game. But you're not going to see some clubs that two teams that are spitting mad certainly to face each other number one. Number two just in terms of things going on tomorrow. There will be certainly a lot going on tomorrow. And I believe that one point to start the game, you're going to see both teams come out on the field. Maybe At the same time with American flags, which I think is going to be a very, very classy approach to this. There's going to be certainly a moment of silence as well for the lives that were lost. On 9 11. There's going to be some flyovers as well. So there's going to be a lot going on. Without a doubt. This could be a tribute at halftime by the Naval Academy and the Air Force Academies Drum and Bugle Corps. So this is going to be a lot going on. It's going to be a very special day. Do you remember that BYU game that Troy Calhoun was referring to this week that also took place on September 11th? I do not remember that game. To be honest with you. I miss choice Press conference this week. Okay, well, he just brought up. That was the last time Or maybe that was one time that they had played. That was the like 10th or 11th anniversary. Of it. So he brought it up as and I know what Troy was doing, right? He's trying to say, You know, we've done this before. Even though obviously this group of kids have not. Um, but it just, you know, trying to normalize it the best he can the way that coaches do so. I was just curious. He said that it was a BYU game that took place on that one of the anniversaries of 9 11. Well, I'm sure it was. And that's what Troy will do, and that's what coaches will right because obviously, I think they want their club focusing on the game. But look, you're human at the same time. And while a number of these just about all of these young men and young women that go to both schools, some of them weren't even born 20 years ago, and others were just two or three years old when when that occurred. So I understand what Troy's trying to do. He wants his team to cut it, You know, keep their focus on football because because that's what they're here to do at the end of the day, But at the same time, you don't have to tell these young men and women that look, they understand what the bigger picture is. Because the bigger picture is they went to the school not to play football. They went to the school, certainly to represent their country, so I don't know. Sometimes coaches worry about the little list of things, which always is. You know, maybe wondering, scratch my head and but I don't think he's got anything to be concerned. Jim Arthur, Voice of the Air Force Falcons. My guest. How many punches did my fee simple last weekend against Lafayette? Well, he pulled the time because look, they essentially ran like 34 plays the whole game. I mean, that's it. They did not once target tight end Kyle Patterson. All right. You saw very, very few formations. And And those surprised they were not going to show their hands. On tape to maybe there's no doubt about that, and I think when you go back to last year, I think last year's because last year was such an odd year. You might be able to get some things from it, but I don't really think you can get very much to last year's tape. So I think you almost have to go back to 2019. If you're attending a model Lolo, And while you may see some different personnel, the coaching staff has been the same. My piece has been there. The old offensive coordinator John Rodzinski has been there. The defensive coordinator Troy the head coach, So but, yeah, you're right. They pulled a lot of punches. They were very basic with all their stuff because they don't want to show Navy something. That they could use to their advantage. But on the other side, Lafayette threw everything at Air Forces defense trying to win that, uh, football game and Yeah, they were a little bit with the different quarterbacks, but they got some solid play. So I think that the defense Was tested pretty well, Understanding the level that Lafayette plays at What were your takeaways from this Air Force defense? Well, I thought the Air Force defense did enough when they had to. I think obviously they need to shore up the past defense a little bit, but they also think at the same time you probably didn't show your full hand if you were John Radzinsky. What number two. And this is important to remember. You know, Lafayette's offense and what you're going to see from Navy tomorrow. It's like comparing a bicycle to an orange because you know, Navy is an option team. And they don't throw the ball very well. They will occasionally just to remind air force that they're going to try to, But it's all going to be about the option. And so with the Air Force defense to the last week against loss to get Is Lafayette was much more of a balance. Team running and passing to what you're going to see Saturday with, namely, team that's going to try to run the ball 75 maybe 80 times again. I don't know if you worry at all about what happened with the Air Force defense last week because it's a completely different offensive scheme they're going to face on Saturday. But that being said again getting back to the things coaches do, But, um, Xavier our line. Um, I think the name D Dallas was brought up by Joy Cowley in this week. Um, when you, uh, from what you know about him or what you hear about him? How dangerous is he as a quarterback for Navy going against this Air force defense? Well, Troy will occasionally tend to To enhance if you will, an opposition player. Uh, coaches tend to do that. Look, I don't know He's a young guy. I I mean, they're young at quarterback, whether it's lava tie who may have gone out with an injury number one or if it's our line. They're very young at that position. He certainly isn't a Matthew Perry. At least not yet. Okay? He certainly isn't a Keenan Reynolds, Okay? From a number of years ago..

"Not, you know, trying not to get fired. That's what this season is. But honestly, as maybe uninspired as you think that Teddy Bridgewater selection was I'm telling you, you'll take nine and eight. You'll take nine and eight with a chance of 10 and seven If that's where the Broncos are given the schedule, they have seven teams better than them. Seventeen's worse than them. That is a successful season by any measure for this franchise at this point in their history. And then Sell some hope. And sell some orange and blue number 12 jerseys, but that's next year. Story number two. Kyle keeps getting better and better. Um, he has good size. I think he you know you always start from the ground up the footwork, part of it. He's improved and improved a great deal that includes at the top of breaks and routes. Just when it comes to his feet and his hand placement on blocks, Uh and we line him up in a number of positions. You know, he's in there at a unit spot. He's detached wide. He's flexed, you know, within five yards of the tackle, and, uh and handles that quite well and He's a good football player. That's Gets better and better as time goes to Air Force, say coach Troy Calhoun talking about the player that I believe will make the difference for the Falcons against Navy on Saturday, and that is Kyle Patterson. They're tied end. And where you are on the constant lookout at following air Force for guys that are unique to air force in terms of their athleticism, their skill Jalen Robinette was one of those guys. Certainly. You go through. The history like a D Taoists. Was unique was special could have played in a lot of different places, chose Air Force Kyle Patterson's cut from that same cloth. He could have played for Nick Saban, Alabama. And He chose therefore sauce and as the air force gets ready to play, the first of two games that will determine who will hold the commander in chief trophy for the rest of the year. I think Airfone has got to find ways to get Kyle Patterson the football on Saturday because as much As how Paterson is unique. That also means Army and Navy doesn't have guy don't have guys that can cover him. But it's all they can't just four speed him. It's got to be set up through the running game with Brad Roberts. Well when that timing is right, and my thesis calls that play action pass over the top. It's going to be there. It's going to be there and Kyle Patterson, I think can have a major impact. On Saturday's game, and I think it's a big reason why You didn't see him against Lafayette because they're like we're good. We can beat LA fare without Kyle Patterson. We don't want to put anything more on film than we already have for Navy. And we're unleashing. I think they're going to unleash him. I think he has a big game and I think Airfone beats Navy. In Annapolis. And set themselves up nicely. To bring the commander in chief trophy home to where it belongs. Can call around springs. Story number three is Jeet. Gee, it's and Walker getting into Cooperstown today, the induction ceremony taking place at noon Mountain time. No, I lie. 11 mountain time, I believe is when I tuned into it. Which is just the best time on a Wednesday to have the induction of one of the most famous. Baseball players of all time and also Somebody like Larry Walker, who is one of the more underrated players of all time. And therein lies that the economy of the 2021 2020 class that was finally inducted here in the year 2020. You have one of the most underrated players of all time, underrated because of where he played. The majority of his home games, not the majority of his games. Mind you. Which I think some voters started to realize. And that's why they start voting for Larry Walker. But because of where he played most of his home games, underrated him. He deserved to be in before now. Derek Jeter. On the other hand, one of the most, if not the most overrated athletes of all time. Absolutely yes. But he's overrated, and I said this last hour for the best reasons. Because he's a leader because he's a winner because he's clutch. If I have to overrate a guy. I'd want to overrate him because of those reasons. Doesn't make them undeserving of The honor that was bestowed upon him today. He absolutely deserved it. But I do find it interesting that the economy between a guy who waited way too long. To get into Cooperstown and a guy Who may have been a sure thing and deservedly so. But like the surest of things, maybe he wasn't And it's because of the color pinstripes. The war where war I could speak. And the city. They played it. And also two of his most indelible images are defensive plays. And he wasn't even that good of a defensive shortstop again. I say with all the love in my heart, I come from a family of Yankee fans. We love jets. I love jets. Deserving of being in the Hall of Fame, but the fact that layer Walker graduate 10 years Despite being a superior player. To dare Jeter. Worth pointing out, but both very deserving and I'm happy that they will be immortalized in Cannes. 522987 to take your thoughts on the three stories that are driving the show coming up. Just when it comes to his feet and his hand placement on blocks, Uh and we line him up in a number of positions. You know, he's in there to unit spot. He's detached wide. He's flexed, you know, within five yards of the tackle and and handles that quite well and He's a good football player. That's Gets better and better as time goes to I think one of the things I'm going to be most watching four on Saturday is where they line up. Kyle Patterson. Now. You know how many catches Kyle Patterson had against Lafayette this weekend zero You know how many times he was targeted that many times zero? Rory Calhoun in my face and did not want to give Navy Any looks at this year's version of Kyle Patterson. Now he's played against native before, so it's not like film doesn't exist of him and actually, absolutely does. But the way that they are going to use him, I think is We may see him used in ways that we haven't seen. How Paterson before. And I think he is the secret weapon. The X factor What everyone is calling. Because he's a guy that Major division One college programs, wanted an Air Force gun. And in the biggest game of the year, you got to figure out a way to get this guy the ball. I I know you can't go completely away from what you are. It's still going to be running the football and in the running game of Brad Roberts and then Michael Davis around the edges. Zeke Daniels running the ball at times that's going to set up Airfone his ability to hit Navy over the top with the Kyle Patterson or even with, uh You know some of their Other receivers. Like David Cormier. They didn't employee him that much. But he's been a talent that has been discussed at the Academy for years now. And so it's not just pile, Patterson. But I think when Air Force. Has that that guy who can stretch the field. They're so much more difficult to be, especially against other service academy. And I think Kyle Patterson is that guy? I think if Kyle Patterson has a good game, I think Air Force winds on Saturday. Navy can absolutely counter anything that has eat. Daniels does in the running game or Brad Roberts or my kid. They can. They have guys like that. Maybe they're not quite as good and I would go with the Brad Roberts. But in the wash it all kind of evens out. Kyle Patterson. Navy doesn't have anybody like Kyle Patterson. And more importantly, they don't have anybody that can cover Kyle Patterson. Especially If the timing is right with this Falcon offense, and they call that play action. At the absolute right time and hit Navy over the top. I think Kyle Patterson is the difference on Saturday. I really do. 522987 to take your thoughts on Air Force Navy. When we come back, I want to go. I tried to do I was going to do this last hour kind of ran out of time. You have my predictions for records wise, who wins their divisions who goes to the playoffs? Let's look at some of the individual awards. M V P rookies of the year. Coach of the year and also maybe the most important thing. That is going to be decided this year, which quarterback Throws the most interceptions in the NFL. We'll talk about those next on extra sports 1300. Receiving a special needs diagnosis for a child is never easy. A special needs connection and Medicaid waivers is a private agency.

"I can't. I can't even imagine what is honestly, I can't even imagine I wasn't here when Air Force play BYU. It's before my time. I I can't even imagine what the atmosphere is going to be like there. But it's going to be A solemn occasion but also a celebration. As Troy Calhoun said of The people that Every day. Are the ones that happened are the ones that have to go into the line of duty. When things like what happened 20 years ago. Happens, so it will be I'm sure it will be an emotional day for a lot of people and In the midst of that it again. It's the biggest football game of the year for Air Force If they don't win this Then. You know they're going to be a lot of people that will Bail on the season. The season wouldn't cannot be characterized as a success unless you win the C I C trophy. And Vermont meets who was Really good against Lafayette and figures to be a force this weekend on the defensive side, talked about what it would mean to him in his class that has yet to celebrate. Beating both army and navy in the same year. Here's Diamante meat. Shit really will be redemption because, you know, class of 21. I think we were shit, if not the only class or one of the few classes that went through. And didn't win the C I C. So I know for our boys in our group chat and all that stuff. It would be a huge win for them and shoot. You know, it's always big winning against service academies, especially at home because that's a really, really hard game to play. It's just respect thing, and it's just like at the end of the day. It's not necessarily who was the better team but who stuck it out the longest and it was who who was able to be consistent in their game plan, so And it feels it's been He doesn't feel like forever, but it's been a while. Since Air Force has won, uh, won that trophy and it's not good as he as demanding Meeks mentioned there. It's not going to be easy. Maybe it's one of the more difficult roads that this team is going to take, Uh, to win this trophy. Because they have to go to Annapolis on the anniversary of September 11th which is going to be, um what we just talked about what's going to be and you're playing on the road than Later in the season. You've gotten the one service academy home game you were supposed to have taken from you and I'm not going to sit here and squabble with that decision. I think that look You got to have a bigger picture and to put air force on that kind of a stage down in Texas, I think is going to be beneficial. To the program. I think about The amount of time that when they win em played in Arizona, like the Arizona Bowl, and that was the year they played. I think they played golf in Arizona, and then they played, uh, South Alabama. And now all of a sudden they have, like 10 guys who are from Arizona. So to play on that stage at global I field later on this season. Yeah, it sucks. It comes at the expense of air force this year. It will come at the expense of army at a later time. But this creates the most difficult path that air force has had to try and win the C I. C trophy. Right? As you look at these two teams, I think always what separates in these academy game. Or what helps separate Is when a team has somebody special. Like a special kind of athlete. We understand It's not to minimize the level of athlete that comes in to the service academies because they're great athletes, but they're not going there to play ball. Right. Maybe they're going to play ball or and This thing this than the other right? All may be one of the reasons why But these aren't I'll have to explain to you right you you get Right? They can't They don't recruit from the same pool as Nick Saban done. Except In the case of one Kyle Patterson. And Kyle Patterson is right up there. With Jalen Robinette when it comes to an athlete that.

"Your way live from Flame Cafe at the United States Olympic and Paralympic Museum, Of course, the NFL season we are on the evil bit. We got one game tomorrow night, and then we'll look forward to the weekend Broncos against the Giants and then Jags jets Ravens onward and upward with this 2021 season, joining me now to discuss the Broncos and some other things, always a wide ranging conversation with Paul Cle of the Gazette. Paul always appreciate the time. Hey, Ryan, How are you doing? I'm doing great, man. How about you? Uh, I want to get to that museum that you've gotten around and seeing some of the sights yet, Um, yes, It's actually one of my kids. Favorite destinations here in Colorado Springs. They love it. And I actually brought my dad for the first time over the weekend. When are you getting down here? I need to come soon. I should bring my, uh, little Johnny and take him down to museum. I've heard great things. Yeah, you should get him to do some archery or something. He's probably old enough now. Yeah, I love Mom's going to go for that right on. Well, I want to tell you first off, because I even though you know we talk, I I just I appreciate the work that you do in the gazette, and it's not just when you're talking about exes and nose and wins and losses. It's about things like you wrote about after the Air Force game on Saturday against Lafayette. In some of the other things that you've written recently. I just I appreciate what you're doing, but I got to look as somebody that has read you for a long time. It feels like this. Is that a newer development for you? Is that a fair assessment and what do you think has triggered The More of the wife intersecting with sports or sports as a backdrop for what's really going on in the world. When did that shift kind of happen for you? Yeah, That's a good question. I and I appreciate you bringing it up because there has been certainly, um I think what it was as a kind of a confluence of what I hear people talking about. What they're interested in reading about. Um, I think that's a big part of it, because I don't think sports are the same as they were even five years ago. I think they're viewed very differently for a good chunk of the population for a lot of reasons. And so, uh, um, that triggered it a little bit. Um It's good that I felt like to kind of stretch out a little bit more and write about things that maybe I haven't in the past. I tell you what, Ryan becoming a dad changes your view. A lot of things, doesn't it? You know it, um It's made me I prep sports are always my favorite thing to write about high school sports. I just I love covering perhaps sports. Um But it's you. Do you view it differently? I think now that I probably would have nine months ago. I don't know what happened. I became this big softie. Uh, yeah, you You got aged quite a bit. I know it happened to me twice. I jumped like four or five years when my first son was born. I jumped another four or five. I, You know, I'm 36. But in some ways I feel like I'm 60. So I don't I think that the one thing that, um like this last Air force columns, some of it was really Don't want to say encouraged but helped by, uh, a bunch of Air Force vet that I talked to before the game. And they opened my eyes to how a lot of them they're feeling and their families are feeling right now, and I felt it different. There was a different sentiment, her tone at that air Force game the other day. I think part of it was. You didn't have fans in audience last year, and I think people were grateful. Yeah, you know to be back there. But there is also a bit of a somber feeling, too, because of what's going on overseas lately, so That's why I chose to write about that. But the response has been extraordinary, mainly from Air Force and Navy. Naval Academy that Yeah, I thought it was. It was one of the best works that you did. And I just to be honest, I wasn't in kind of that head space that you were in. So reading it. I thought it was fantastic. So good on you for doing that. Not that you need my kudos. But, um, I just appreciated what you were writing about, and sometimes It's in the back of my mind in the back of our collective minds what these young men are here to do. Um, we get so wrapped up in You know how many catches Kyle Patterson is going to have and all that kind of stuff, And we're always cognizant in Troy Calhoun reminds us all the time. But when something happens like what has happened recently. You're like it kind of brings it to the forefront where you're like, Oh, yeah, when these guys are done playing these 12 games or whatever they're going to get ready to go and do some other stuff. And even though it's always with us, maybe it's not in the front of our mind, So I appreciate the fact that you brought it to the front of Vermont. Yeah. Thank you. What struck me man was I was reading about the 13 who were killed and and the average age of the 10 Marines. Was 22. And so when I got there to talk in stadium, there are 22 year olds out there. And that changed, you know, changed our view, the rest the game. That was a lot of fun. By the way. It was Friday night I got I went up to Boulder and did the C U game. That was a blast. I love watching dilemma. Catholic play quarterback, I think see us going to play a lot better than they did this week, and it's a and M but then get to go to Falcon Stadium Saturday, Man. It was It was terrific to be at those two places, especially talking stay is my favorite one of my favorite place in Colorado football or otherwise, So that's always a treat to get there, but it was a lot of fun to watch those two games. Um, it's part of me of laments the fact that the Navy game is scheduled for to be an Annapolis because that would be down would certainly be a site and an experience in and of itself to be at Falcon Stadium on Saturday for what Saturday represent resident Yeah, And I never know if the opposing team is good or not, because Troy Calhoun made him made navies sound like the, uh, 98 Broncos the last couple days. But I think it should be a more evenly matched game than what we saw last year that that would be my hunch. I don't think navy can and we'll play like that again. But I think this air force team actually I'm really high on that. Air Force defense. I think they've got a chance to be really good. And if the offense can do what he usually does, Um, I think this air force seemed to be pretty good man. I think it could be like 9 10 wins Good. Do you does that matter, though, if they don't win Saturday, and when at global I feel later in the season. Not to them. No. Yeah, No, I know I I try to do this where I'm like, Well, they finished. You know, they go to Mount West title game or they make a run at Boise, and it's like, nobody cares. They lost the movie. They don't have the C I C trophy so ego, no matter how many wins, it's really the two that matter. Most. Right. Michael Davis. Does that again with SportsCenter there. Um, I that catchy made on the sideline. I don't know how that didn't get on SportsCenter. That was something so hopefully we'll do another one of those on Saturday and we'll make it. Yeah, I was. They were kind of hiding Kyle Patterson. I think that he's going. I'm going to talk about this a little bit later. But I think that they were very deliberate might feasting and Troy Calhoun not employing Kyle Patterson very much against Lafayette because I think they're going to unleash him on Saturday. He asked to. I mean, they don't get you know, guys like that very often. Navy doesn't have to cover guys like that as often so I do think that there was some gamesmanship being played. I think so, too. When I look forward to what Saturday brings it, having this game so early in the year, we know why they're doing it. Which is going to be an awesome atmosphere. You've been watching it through a television. But it's it makes It makes my life in your life a little bit more difficult when they play one of these service academies week to if they don't win. It kind of puts Paul on the rest of the season, but hopefully the boys I'm with you. I think they're going to go in and have a great performance against Navy and hopefully they pull it out. Paul, Clear The gazette. My guest here on drive time sports. Let me ask you about a team that you will be covering. I think quite a bit..

"Join me here on drive time sports and I look at this, Um, this list I see wide receiver, wide receiver, wide receiver, wide receiver, wide receiver, wide receiver, tight end So let's and and, you know, Gerry Griffin, I don't think people are, you know going to overlook and because of what he was able to do in go to the NFL in and I don't know that that Should factor into when you're naming the greatest of all time at Air Force, because it's more about what they did at Air Force. But obviously, as we've seen the evolution of the offense that we talked about Is still the tight ends. We're not used Traditionally, as I guess. Many positions on the field in an air force offense aren't used traditionally, but I guess. Talk a little by have a kind of a two pronged question. One is What do you see about the evolution of the tight end position? And then Garret Griffin specifically, what did he have that other tight ends that have come through the academy didn't I think with Garret Griffin, I'll answer your second question. First, I think with Garret Griffin, he was a guy you could trust. Obviously you played a lot of football because he was a very good run blocker. I mean, that's where it starts. Even for the tight end. You've got to be a very good run blocker. And then if you've got the ability and I have good hands to go out there and make some plays happened then then you become a part of the offense that the opposition weekend and week out doesn't necessarily schemed for. Obviously they know you're there. But if you're catching Or if there's someone to you, maybe three times a game. If you're lucky, Uh, of course, A defensive coordinators are not like okay, We've got to worry about that Tight end. Man is going to really burnished today. We're not careful. Garret Griffin 41 catches in his career 678 yards. He is eight touchdowns. We knew how to get into The end zone and you know again what Air Force was able to spread the ball around. You really worried a little bit, and a lot of people don't know this. But if you go to an air force practice, and I've been to a lot of You go to an air Force practice, they practice throwing the ball. They run throwing drills and passing grows as much as they run. Running drills and option grills and everything else. And a lot of people don't understand that. But Troy Calhoun really has his team with that kind of mindset. And when you could have somebody reliable about like Derrick Griffin I mean, it's just terrific. It's just another weapon. And then you talk about the evolution of the tight end. I think that evolution is really kind of up and down. I don't think it's something that has shown steady growth because I think some years you've got tight ends like, uh, like like a guy like Garret Griffin said. You can count on that you can trust and you can plan for a little bit somebody years. You don't and some years, the pride and maybe two or three balls, you know, maybe for half a season pops, and that's it. So Air Force has Kyle Patterson, who's been, I think who's could If they throw to him enough could be one of the best tight ends in the history of air Force. They love this shot, and this guy is sensational. We've got great hands. He's a big body, so obviously we can pass block. He's an absolute weapon. But you're only a weapon. If you get used a lot, I don't say used It used a lot. That's when you're a weapon. And so a lot of times tight ends don't fit into air forces plants because it has run first. It's one second and has passed third. So I think the evolution tied. It goes up and down, depending on the talent you have at that level and how much you use that talent, and here's a great point that farmer As a wide receiver for the Falcons, and he wound up playing. I think maybe a year for the New York Jets. Okay, a very talented wide receiver. And this isn't the knock on fish you to bury. But back back to the day when he played for Air Force picture, the bear are used to have his wide receivers rotate in and relay the place that carry the plane from the sidelines. The problem with that was that father was only on the field one out of every three offense of plate. So he's really he's not a weapon on on the sidelines, and I guess my point being is your only a weapon. If you get used quite a bit. Patterson can become that weapon if Air Force uses of more. He's a terrific talent. But if you if you don't throw to them that much you'll you'll never know how good a guy is. Or maybe you don't have the diet. That's why you don't throw to him want much, but the evolution Tight end while they've had some good ones, I think is a little more herky jerky. Uh, because it's not a position you're necessarily Looking for a wide receiver first and a blocker seconds or passed after first And block the second the other way around. Jim Arthur, my guest. So if I had hold you to it, the list of names that you have, and you could cast three votes. Who would you choose? If I could cast three votes well off Jalen Robinette, number one. I don't think there's any question about that. Um I would pick we haven't talked about him. Gerard Sanders. Who I thought was real steady for air Force and another guy that you know he saw its fair share of playing time and they did use them. You could have used them even a little bit more. I would put Gerard Sanders On that list, and then I think it's tough between Jonathan War Zika, Garrett Brown and and Garret Griffin Jonathan War, Zika was pretty good wide receivers also kick returns for Air Force as well and he did a good job returning kicks. If I had to pick a third guy probably would lean towards Garrett Brown. To be honest with He was just a guy that you didn't see him making mistakes. He was a guy that just made things happen when the ball came to them, so I would pick Jalen Robinette, Gerard Sanders and Derek Brown. And those were the three that I had. So clearly my ulterior motive of getting you to agree with me worked through Jedi mind tricks, So those were the three That's why you have employed me your words employee. So yeah. Uh, let me ask you that this because I don't think you and I even in the hallways have talked about this yet. But, you know, I talked about this the other day, the the potential expansion. Of the college football playoff in around these parts. I think we're just looking for a chance, right? We understand that Even when you expand the field, you are still trying to placate The big boys, and I think that most years we're going to see like six SEC teams. If they go to 12 like it's still to placate those guys. What do you think? 12 provides that just that that Little bit of hope. That if an Air Force team or.

"Jim Arthur Voice of the Air Force Falcons. My guest. You mentioned success for Army that maybe they've already achieved that number one goal and this one will be the number two goal for Air Force. In this Crazy season. With cancelations in a shortened season to begin with, and all these players opting, you know, opting out because they didn't think there'd be a season all of this kind of stuff going on. Is Whether this season is characterized as a success at Air Force or not solely contingent upon the result of tomorrow. No, it is not. And I'll tell you why. Because what this coaching staff has done this year. This is the best coaching job they've done in all the years of covered air force, the Yes. Season of coaching young man that I've seen in my years at the academy because when you have 40 players, most of whom you are going to figure and start and play considerable minutes Aside that because of covert, they've got to take medical turn backs. Now you are working with young men who and no slap against them little more than likely. Just based on experience and the fact that we'll just experience there weren't probably figuring to play a lot of football this year because they had so many guys ahead of him. Do you take and lump off the top 40 players on your football team, and now you've gotta work with younger guys who are fresh wind and soft war And you've got to say, fellas. Next man up there. They're still scheduling games. We gotta play games. We know you're young. We know you haven't played a lot, but you know what? We expected it kind of baby play beyond your years and with this coaching staff has done Get them ready and to make them competitive, and every single game has been off the charts. Unbelievable that such a Troy Calhoun, it starts with my face in and John Ridge in city, and it goes to the coaches that work under those two coordinators. It's been amazing Air Force is playing their best footballing now and look, the roster has changed. OK every two weeks because that's about how often Air force is playing every two weeks. The rosters changed every two weeks because of covert. But air force is finding another guy whom you've never heard, of whom I've never heard of. Putting him in the lineup and they have played well and they have competitive played competitively and they have one football games. So does this game maker break the season for Air Force? It doesn't Now will there be an absolute absolute quiet satisfaction from the seniors who decided not to leave? And who decided to stay. The Parker Ferguson's Kate Rims. Berg's the Nolan law from burgs those types of guys at Absolutely because again They made a decision to stay not knowing what the future held because, remember, at one point, it's a two game season. It's army and Navy. And that's it. Okay, Somehow you're able to squeeze out six games. And here you are vying for a trophy that air force hasn't had remember since 2016. So they'd be able to do it under these circumstances with these so many young players in a covert atmosphere with so many unknowns and be on the precipice of winning this thing. I'll tell you what that would be old process special for Parker Ferguson for Nolan Lawford Berg for the seniors that remain Tater Ramsburg for the guys that remain the Adam jewels on this football team. Um Arthur, my guest. You know when we look at air Force against Army and in really against Navy to an advantage that Air force normally has is that they have some semblance of a passing game, whereas Service Academy rivals. You can't say the same as consistently is air Force does. I was looking at the box scores for his eat Daniels this year Kind of like the game by game log. So he starts the season four of nine for 41 yards against Navy. Against Utah State. He on. Lee throws nine passes again but complete seven of them for 127 yards and a touchdown. How much improvement lies in those three extra passes that his IEG Daniel's completed against Utah State. It's a great point. You know, it's four different receivers and his leading receiver Brandon Lewis, doesn't even play. Is that game, okay? And so and and the other guy that doesn't play that game. I actually was leading receiver Kyle Patterson this tight end the second lead and receiver Brandon Lewis doesn't play in that game. Then he throws three passes to Daniel Morris. He throws a couple of bent Peterson. He goes a couple came and speed walk, guys. You haven't heard much of his passing has gotten better because You know, I think he's caught up to the speed of the game in his head. I think he has been able to slow things down. I think he's throwing. He's not trying to throw a ball through a player and his passes at times and low and I think he's been able to elevate his passes. Make peace since done a real good job with working on him on settling him in and throwing the football. Now, look, it's not like Donald Hammond, and nobody's suggesting that it is. But for his IQ, Daniel's remember this is only 1/6 game on D Want Onliest Sixth College football game. Utah State game was only 1/5 game. Okay, You can practice all you want fine, but it's in games where you really kind of learned Maura about yourself and what you're doing wrong and how you can get better at that. And Daniels has been able to elevate the football been able to make better decisions. He's not trying to throw it through guys, and I think you saw the results of that and you're absolutely right. Who's throwing the ball much, much better. And there's enough of a passing game there. That Yeah, Army better be worried about that. And, yeah, this is the healthiest that Air force has been Only all season long and yeah, I'll give you I'll give you a spoiler. Brandon Lewis is going to play in this game number 13 and you know Kyle Patterson is going to play in this game. As well, Number 88. So, yeah, the big guns too common for army and it looked. Air force is much more offense than Army does, And I think that's going to be the difference in this game, plain and simple. Before I let you run. Let me get in a hoops question. Um, you have the Air Force Nevada game on on Sunday. I think so much about the early season and maybe the season as a whole for Joe Scott and his second Time around here at air forces is reestablishing or I guess nobody's left over from when he was here, so it's establishing the culture but reintroducing The way he wants to play with guys that are admittedly knight his players. Over these last few games. I know Drake was a big step up in competition this past week, Nevada will prove to be the same way, although they're not the Nevada team of even Two or three years ago, but there's still a solid team. What is your early read on this Air Force basketball team? Well, Joe really likes to speak. He really, really Likes this basketball team. He loves the guys. He has. Because they play the right way. Now establishing, and Joe doesn't like to use the word culture. But all used, you know, establishing maybe the better stories is establishing his type of play. Is what he's trying to do with that. It's hidden, Miss. You know, the offense has been kind of a little slow in coming along. It's a complicated offense, even though There is some similarities toe last year, it's different than last year. The defense. It's his own matchup zone defense on that takes time to put in his willing to understand that and again, you can practice all you want. And you know, Mr Iverson was right practices a little bit overrated. It's in games where you learn how to get better and how you apply what you have worked on in practice. And so it's in the games where Air Force is seeing how other teams you're going to play them. The other adjustments Air Force has had to make to those teams. And adjust accordingly. And that's a building process And that takes time..
