A lot of the fancy words that everyone wants to hear about, you know, we're going to do more to make our leadership more diverse. We're going to try to retain and hire more diverse workforce. Bloomberg news diversity, reporter Jeff Green says a study found that firms that talk about diversity can see big benefits even if their efforts are lackluster. That's because few companies are open about hiring and promotions. There is no universal requirement that companies publicly report what they're doing in diversity. Green says every company does an annual EEO one form that shows the gender and racial breakdown of the entire workforce, but most firms keep the forms to themselves. He says, what is needed is transparency. Show us the numbers. I mean, just show me real numbers that I can compare across the industry across the country across everything else. And then we'll know. On the latest edition of the tape podcast, a conversation with Ben slavin, a BNY Mellon. In this environment, we've seen an acceleration of not only product launches, but also adoption by investors. So last year was a record for the ETF industry. Actually in the last two years, at BNY Mellon on our platform that we service a large percentage of the industry, we were launching almost one ETF a day on our platform. Now that is slowed and our expectation is that it will slow a bit and also closures will tick up. So on a net basis we might not hit that record, but the Q looks strong and one of those drivers is really the mutual funds starting to convert to ETF. So that's the reasons, right? We had a regulatory change that allowed mutual fund conversions to ETFs. And frankly, ETFs are just a lot cheaper. I mean, if you're an investor, it makes a lot more sense depending on obviously your goals and what you want to do. Your risk tolerance et cetera, but you're looking at 25 or 50 basis points. Maybe 95 or a hundred rather than one and a half or 2%. Fees matter. And that has been one of the drivers of ETF adoption, but look, you know, from an asset manager standpoint, investors are clearly preferring the ETF structure and that is putting a lot of pressure on the industry. So some of the mutual fund sponsors are saying, hey, if we can't beat them, join them. And now that the path is open to convert a mutual fund to an ETF, it just provides another way for large mutual fund complexes to enter the ETF space and continue to grow their funds and to some degree

Yes, there are about 2% in pre market. And we generally see in some pretty good earnings for materials and industrial companies this quarter. DuPont's adjusted earnings per share for three Q beat the average analyst estimate. It was 82 cents estimate 79. The only thing to be watching is it sees adjusted EPS of three 30, which is contrary to the lower individual range and it's seeing some consumer electronics demand weakness, but so far in the pre market investors are happy. Yeah, right on top of the laggards this morning in the pre market is lift. It really is getting crushed this morning after earnings. Yeah, it's down like about 20% in pre market trading. It's on track to hit its lower level on record. Ride sharing companies results kind of seem to confirm and losing market share to Uber and if this pre market moves hold, it would hit the lowest level since the IPO. It has weaker than expected ridership growth. And this kind of comes in contrast to Uber, which reported last week that the ride hailing customers are rebounded to pre-pandemic levels. We got an earnings miss as well from trip adviser. How's that stock doing? Yeah, also down about 20% in free market trading on disappointing three quarter results. Revenue was ahead of estimates, but the fourth quarter guidance disappointed and analysts can have noted that it was increased spending on buyer as the main reason for the soft outlook. But really looks like it's going to be a tough morning for a lot of these online techie stocks. And we're looking ahead to a big name reporting earnings later on today with Walt Disney. What's that stock doing ahead of the report? Yes. So they're expected to add 9.3 million subscribers to the Disney+ streaming service. And that's a month before introduced in ad support aversion. One possibly good sign is that Netflix the internal forecast as well as analysts expectations for the recent quarter. But Bloomberg intelligence is seeing that Disney is going to have a strong finish. So it looks like it could be a good day for the stock. employees across the U.S. and around the world how did they manage this during the lockdown Were you able to deal with this or did you go into the pandemic semi virtual anyway So because we have such a big global footprint and such a diversity of businesses from life sciences to obviously private equity and credit and tech growth and venture capital and many others We were used to working across our platform and how do we activate our platform when we're looking at various situations Now we obviously had never encountered anything like we saw in March of 2020 But we had the technology in place in huge credit to our technology team that everything worked We decided early on that we were going to make sure everybody from the most junior analysts to the most senior people in the firm had any technology they needed at their homes If they need to routers if they needed their Internet sped up new laptops a screen A lot of firms spend a lot of time figuring out what they were going to do And we made the concerted effort to enable people as fast as possible In Boston we even had a group going around with literally a pickup truck and they moved our trade stations our trader stations and reset them up in their homes Within the first week of the pandemic we never missed an hour But when I stepped back and I reflect on that period of time and what we've learned over the last two years his undergraduate degree before going on to earn an MBA at Harvard Jonathan Levine welcome to a Bloomberg Thank you very much I'm glad to be a hitter So given your background you study economics undergrad you get an MBA how did you find your way to Wall Street What did you do between your undergraduate and your MBA Interestingly enough I actually didn't study economics as an undergrad I studied political science and English literature And I took one economics course I think that that's why I'm so good at always reducing things to basic supply and demand because that's how far I got And I was into Columbia law school and I was planning on attending and a friend of mine said you know the investment banks now have analyst programs and they claim they're just looking for smart people and you don't need to know anything And I thought I was smart And I still wasn't charged I said well I'm going to law school and I'll never forget you said to me well there's free food And I said well free food I'll definitely show up And I literally showed up interviewed with a few places was fortunate enough to get some offers and I decided to go to wrestle Burnham And I worked at drexel Burnham for the just short of two years between business school and college because obviously dress still didn't make it the full two years but it was an amazing experience before I went to business school Really really intriguing I never knew that MBA programs came with free food otherwise I might not have gone to law school I didn't know that That's really interesting So you go from drexel which you're primarily known as an M and a shop to McKinsey the big consultancy what was that transition like How did you find yourself operating when you were no longer in what essentially was one of the hottest M and a shops on the street So when I went to business school a couple of things happened one is because I didn't have traditional undergraduate economics or finance or accounting I really only knew about finance because that's where I wound up And so I learned so much more about the strategic aspects of business Second of all I met my wife the third day of business school And we discussed where we wanted to be And we wanted to be in Boston and at the time there weren't a lot of finance jobs in Boston And I had the good fortune of meeting the people from the McKinsey Boston office which was quite small at the time I was able to go there at the summer really found the work interesting and probably even more so the people were truly extraordinary people Great teachers really intellectually curious And the second year of business school because my clients were local I was able to actually work part time in that office the second year of business school And I had accepted the offer I went back there My wife actually was working at a different consulting firm She was at DCG But there was part of me that always thought I would get back to some form of finance or investing And Bain capital in early 1993 was raising its first institutional fund Historically we were less than ten years old in historically had basically had high net worth funds And we were jumping from a $120 million fund to a $300 million fund which at the time seemed enormous And I got a call from somebody I knew here and he said we're trying to quote beef up a little bit I think the firm had fewer than 20 investors And we want somebody with consulting and banking experience Are you interested in talking to us And.
