Byron wins 2nd straight Cup race, beats Larson at Phoenix
"William Byron likes victory lane so much last week at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. He went back this week at Phoenix raceway, besting Ryan Blaney and Kyle Larson in the last battle for the win. I assumed he would be more aggressive, but my counter to that was all right, I gotta win. Do whatever I can do. So it was kind of like it was a game of chicken a little bit. Larson had dominated leading 201 laps, but Byron was on his bumper for the entire race. He did a really good job of holding its outside and clear me down the back. They were in a drag race on the final lap as baron drove in deep to turn one and pulled away. I was kind of like, man, it went so good last week. I'm probably gonna end up crashing here. Blaney came out of the scrum in second with Larson in third. I'm Jerry Jordan.

William Byron wins at Las Vegas as Hendrick dominates
"William Byron hit the jackpot at Las Vegas Motor Speedway leading 176 out of 271 laps to take the win and lock himself in to NASCAR's playoffs later this year. Happy with getting the first one of the year it's been a while since we've won. It's been almost a year and it's nice to kind of just get back to what I feel like we're capable of. It was a teammate trifecta as barents teammate Kyle Larson finished second. I thought Kyle was really strong. He could stay close to me for a lot of the runs. The 24 pits I was just better than ours there at the end. So bummed, but all in all, we needed a good run today. You have second and all three stages and good points today. Followed by fellow Hendrick motor sports driver, Alex Bowman in third. I'm Jerry Jordan.

Bowman, Larson give Hendrick sweep of front row at Daytona
"Time trials for the 2023 Daytona 500 are complete and Alex Bowman will lead the field to the green on Sunday as his teammate Kyle Larson paces on the outside of row one. As a driver, really all you can do is get the best launch you can, hit your shift points right. And try to run the best you can, not mess it up. Bowman's 181.696 mph lap puts him on the front row for a record of 6 straight times. I would love to be able to sit here and take a little bit of credit and I feel like my launch was okay and my shifts were good, but man, it's really on the team guys they get the job done. Morrison said timon and Rick Hendrick stresses the importance of winning the pole, but there's a bigger task at hand. Rick, it's really excited about that, but I know he'd be even more excited. One of the four of us somehow end up in victory lane on Sunday. With the front row now set, the remaining driver starting positions would be based on their finishes in the dual qualifying races. Hamlin holds off Busch in OT in wild Coca-Cola 600
"By the time the checkered flag flew at Charlotte Motor Speedway they'd been through two overtimes and 619 and a half miles and pole sitter Denny Hamlin had found his way back to the front for his first win in the Coca-Cola 600 It's a big one I mean it's one of the three majors we got in our sport and it's one that I hadn't won and to be part of the Koch family for as long as I have and to finally win is awesome Hamlin took the lead at the end of the first overtime when he was able to avoid a multi car wreck that took out the leaders Chase Briscoe brought out the first overtime spinning with tulips to go and regulation while battling for the lead with Kyle Larson Kyle Busch finished second to Hamlin Brett McMillan Concord North

"But let's be real here. Kyle Larson is a different Kyle Larson than he was before. Everything happening and before that everything that happened in public and the whole world knew what was happening. He comes back at different person. And I think he will be a great champion because he's gonna use this platform now because he understands the platform that he has. A lot of guys win a championship point and they don't understand the platform. He understands the platform, how he can help this sport move forward in so many different ways. All right, DJ, I want to get one thing from you, you're looking forward to in 2022. We got about a minute and a half. What's your take on the one thing you're looking forward to for next year? I want to see who this new car is really suited for. Who does the best job of this? In my mind, it's the younger drivers that are really going to pick up on this and this is not taking anything away from the veterans that are out there, but when you get something completely new, it's always someone that it suits a little bit more. So I'm interested to see that. Kyle, what's your take? The elimination of lug nut penalties. That's what I'm looking forward to. There will be no lug nut penalties on pit road. Oh, there'll be a small self policing that's what I'm saying. That's all I'm looking for. I'm looking forward to this car. Just to see how this car changes the sport. I can tell you from IndyCar that does happen in the real does, but it falls off before they leave the stall they go about 15 feet and then they have no wheel. So that's how that works out, but that's going to be fun to watch as well. How these pit crews react. It's been a fun year, guys. By the way, your man. Great. Fun working with you. Thank you. Love that guy. And you all thought we were done, but we're not done. This weekend we have them, so make sure you check out petit Le Mans on NBC and NBCSN. That wraps up the imsa championship this year and it's a tight battle for the championships as well. Busy weekend still on NBCSN. Enjoy the off season everyone. We'll see you back here in 2022..

"There's just nothing better to me. Yeah. Listen, I agree. A 1000%. We get so jaded to these guys when and races and getting out and saying, I have to thank all the guys back at the shop and all this. And I mean, and they're excited, but this is a totally different level. This is, this is that 5 year old boy. You know, talking to Daniel Hamrick. This is at 5 year old boy that dreams of making that move and went in that race and winning that championship and that's when you see Kyle Larson and those tears running makes me cry right now. I'll tell you, man it chokes you up. That's why she's up because you've been there. You know what? It's like, and that you and DJ hit on a terrific point earlier that DJ, this one means so much more to him because he was watching this race at Hendrick motor sports last year. He did not have an opportunity to be in this race last year and I thought the way he answered your question. I certainly appreciate it more than I ever would have had that not happen. Yeah, yeah. And that's just, I mean, you understand that. I understand that. You know, my championship came very late. And I always have believed that, you know, things come to us when we're able to handle them and appreciate them more. And in this situation, you know, if Kyle Larson would have done that, we thought he was always going to if he made it into the final forward that homestead he was just going to win that race. Not sure he would appreciate it nearly as much. You hate that he had to go through everything he did to get to this point, but it's maybe a better person, probably a better dad, and certainly he's always been outstanding race driver. Yeah. Yeah. And I think he's going to be a terrific champion as well. And with a greater appreciation. And I thought Jeff Burton brought a really good point. He said a couple years ago, Kyle Larson kind of wanted to be everything. And maybe didn't appreciate NASCAR racing. Now having been out of it, he appreciates it a lot more. Yes, listen, we all appreciate something that when it's taken away from you. I mean, when I broke my leg to set out 6 months and come back, I appreciated the sport more..

"That is awesome stuff with your daughter. I love the moments with Owen. That had to be pretty cool. The best part of that video, Kyle is that folks at home may not know Jeff Gordon felt the 24 was for him. Tax away environment because he's a massive William Byron fan, isn't she? Yeah, she is gosh. I forgot that I had a mic on that whole time and seeing that seeing that again, it's gonna make me cry. So that's special and I hope whoever the producers doing this can please send that to me because that's a special special clip that I look, you know, I'm gonna love to show her someday when she's old. Maybe when she's getting married someday, that'd be brilliant. Well, make sure you get it. I got to ask you the most proud moment that with your daughter, Owen with a car or this with Caitlin when she shotgunning beers at the end of the race. And I love when she was talking to rut because we thought that might have been number one or number two. She goes, oh, it's like 5 or 6. She was she was that deep by the end of the evening as she was shotgunning beers after the race. She was feeling it the next day. That's for sure. She was taking a nap, we got to the hotel in LA and she was taking a nap and I was like catching up on everything and I'd actually pulled her interview up and sleeping and woke up and was pissed that I was watching it and slammed my head shut because she hates the inner self or hearing herself talk. So it's funny. Rough shape of my day, yeah. Yeah. All right, well listen, last thing, last thing, man. We had a great time when we came and did race and roots. I love your parents. Love hanging out with your parents. But here's what I want to know. If we come back to California, I know you're a cup champion and all this stuff, but if we come back to California, can we go hang out with RICO and go over to the pig barn? And just hang out over there again for a little while. I'm sure I'm sure they're always they're always ready to host a party at the Avery ranch. So I'm sure we can work it out. Well, hey man, congratulations from all of us. And as DJ told you Sunday Night, I can't say it but DJ, you go ahead, say it. Welcome to welcome to the club, buddy. Congrats. You're a part of it. Thank you. All right, man. Congratulations. Thanks from all of us. The NASCAR. Good hanging out with you. We'll see you in Nashville. It's coming up quick, man, so burnout on the Broadway all the celebration stuff. Can't wait for it. Thank you guys. All right, man. Thank you. Kyle Larson, giving us a very generous with this time there, by the way. And I love hell. He admits, it has not soaked in. He'd been busy since then. He isn't that time to let it soak in. He hasn't. And you know, they'll do it. I can tell you. It doesn't sink in. I was with my dad. He won so many times. And it was like, until you rolled in the Daytona again, a year late or two months later, it was like, yeah, man, I'm the guy. You know what I mean? It was that kind of thing. So fantastic job. And amazing stuff and good audio there, man. Good food. Good audio by our guys. DJ, I think he's right. Those moments with his daughter after the race, like he would, he's gonna cherish those moments and with Owen forever. Something will never be taken away in that opportunity there. And as he talked about, you know, he might not have appreciated winning this as much if it would have happened two or three years ago. His kids wouldn't have been there to really enjoy nearly as much as what they were able to. Now that they're a little bit older. So everything works out for a reason at the right time. And these are just moments that I think Kyle and I were saying that we our allergies were bothering us if we had tears in our eyes. For sure, for sure. That's good stuff. And certainly some good moments from Larson family that they'll cherish forever celebrating with the family in Phoenix. And they picked a pretty good time to come to their first race. First win of the year. Perfect. Perfect. And that's the shot of the cow. Talked about looking up at the confetti. Certainly some great stuff. So, hey, when we come back, time to shift gears to the Xfinity series and we'll talk to Daniel Hamrick here, Daniel's ready to hang out with us here on NASCAR.

"Looked like at one time. He was going to be the guy to beat in this race and unfortunately, his worst run of the day came in that last segment of the race. I want to say this. As we speak to chase, do you remember a guy named Jeff Gordon? I remember championships and won a bunch of races and then all of a sudden he seemed to fall on a little bit harder times than everybody said, what's wrong with Jeff? And all you had to do was look at his teammate, Jimmy Johnson, who started winning and taking all those wins and winning all those removals and winning all those races. As we see this, you say what's happened to chase? Just look to Kyle Larson. Kyle Larson took up ten wins this year. Ten wins. So when you look at that a lot of times as Dale said, it comes from it's internal. It's there, but at least they know that they can go do it if they get in the right position. Well, certainly going to be something we're going to keep an eye on. And of course, you guys mentioned the next gen car is going to change the game for everybody. So we have no idea what to expect in 2022. Well, we promise Kyle Larson the champion when we come back. We will have Kyle Larson joining us here on NASCAR America motor mouse. Kyle Larson a year ago watch the race from North Carolina. Today he's a Cup Series champion. This is all you guys. Hey, you can already see the emotion. What it means to Kyle Larson. You better be crying boy. I see you. I see you. I'm so proud of you. I can not believe it. So cool, I can't. I can not believe it. What.

"Stood out was the great racing in the Xfinity series and in the Cup Series. And I'm gonna say this in both series the respect that the non playoffs are non championship drivers showed the championship drivers in both ways. There was so much talk leading up to this. Should non playoff drivers race playoff drivers hard? And we just kept hearing it here and we didn't see anything in either race out there in any of the races out there. DJ, you could maybe argue that actually the championship four raced each other harder to make teammates, Kyle Larson and chase Elliott got into each other. Yeah, the racing was just outstanding. And I think once again, the people that questioned whether Phoenix was the right venue to hold this championship weekend and could we have good enough racing? I think that the track itself, everyone around it, the fans, I'll answer all of those questions. And to me, that's what's the most impressive thing. I mean, this place was packed for the entire weekend. They had everything going on and campers there. Everybody had such a great time. And then every race, I know we don't cover the truck series, but you know, to have three new champions in this, was just fantastic to me. And to see because these are all life-changing things for each one of those drivers that was able to grab this championship. So just a spectacular weekend. And I think we went down literally right to the very end before we had any idea who the champion was actually going to be. You can't ask for more than that. That's a good point. And so before we get to Kyle Larson, Daniel Hammond coming up in a little bit, I want to kind of go through the championship four drivers with you guys. Love to get each of you to comment on the drivers. Let's start with Denny Hamlin, Kyle. Yeah. Not winning. Eventually, he's not gonna start getting to Denny as he goes further throughout his career or does he just keep it in perspective of the championship four and just making it there? It's a good question. Because we saw a different Denny come to Phoenix. We saw a mad dating. We saw Denny play that game where he made comments and nobody else was playing. Denny was the only thing I was. But he was very vocal about what chaos and striving and living in chaos and so you know, he had knocked on the front door to try to come in the championship a few years and played the game one way. He came a different route this time, and it didn't happen this time either. So, you know, eventually when you try multiple ways to psych yourself up or psyche the other people up and things don't work out. I think eventually it begins to play on your head. But be totally honest.

"That was a lot of the guys that were really disappointed. At Phoenix, they all did a great job to get to the championship four is a great accomplishment, but clearly they all wanted to win. Chase Elliott's day Steve. Well, listen, it's a season long effort. That's why you see season long disappointment, right? When you really are crossed when it doesn't go your way. I love Chase's approach all weekend long. He says he loves the moment. Loves the opportunity. And when I go back, you know, we show that turning point, we have to remember the start of that turning point was chase Elliott passing Kyle Larson on the racetrack with about 70 something to go. So you know, I think sometimes the interviews are as hard as our analysis, which is what happened? I don't know. I mean, it was an okay day with a very good car. It just didn't fall their way. Now, I hear what you're saying, Jeff. There was a moment in time where the 5 took the championship and it should be celebrated. But for first race in a long time, I don't think anyone gave the championship up. I think the 5 went and took it. And I think that's why there was even more disappointment on the 11 in the 19 and the 9. And that's why they couldn't give you that sound by Nate that would be so easy to write because what do you want them to say to access? Yeah, I don't want to blast my pit crew, but if I would have got off pit road first, maybe I could have won chase Elliott. I don't know the car did a lot of things. Like, I think they're gonna have to really take a few days to analyze this one because if you take the same four drivers of cars, put them in a bag, shake it up, do it again tomorrow. It's very easily a different outcome. Would not have surprised me or anyone, really, if any of those four guys were one. And I think to your point, Steve, you're right. I don't think anybody gave it away, and I think that was maybe it was almost harder when I listen to these guys post race. Truex and chase in particular, it was almost harder, I think for them to sort of process it because and Denny too, I mean, Denny said it. He was somewhat at peace with it because he did everything he could do. There was nothing more than aside from each of those drivers demanding that their pit crews deliver these stop of the year during that final caution. There's nothing else really the drivers of the 9 and 1911 really could.

"Really focus on this year, I said it before, it would have hurt for Kyle Larson not to be the champion 'cause he won 9 races, but how about Martin trex junior? I can make a great case for him. He wanted Venus in the spring, right? Denny Hamlin's won 46 races as a career twice in the playoffs. Chase Elliott won multiple times this year as a defending champ. You go back to the round of 8, three Penske cars have all gone to victory. You know, as the playoffs expanded, I felt that the deserving teams continue to move forward. Now, that doesn't mean deserving teams were off so eliminated. That's what makes great playoffs. Deserving teams have to go home. But I don't ever felt like wow. Can't believe that guy got through. You know, that guy got a little lucky, but no, there was a depth of rundown, a depth of field that every round was very competitive. I enjoyed it. It was more teams. Ultimately made it, right? I mean, that's it. You could make an argument. There was probably a couple other teams. I could rotate in and feel still good about the championship for. But that was a solid championship for. Yeah, it was fun. A lot of fun is what Jamie said weekends are all about. There was another championship race on Saturday, the Xfinity race had an incredible finish. That was a ton of fun. Daniel Hamrick, when we come back, we're going to get into that. We are in overtime, presented by credit one bank as they come back to the green flag. Oh man, even launch. Side by side. Look at the 22 it way down the racetrack trying to side drive the 18. Right, here's where hammering needs to find a way to get it to gas a little sooner the 22 takes that momentum side drafting down the back stretch. Oh he's gonna get loose. 18 gets a little loose left up the track. No contact. But it didn't move the 22 hour racetrack. It wasn't able to finish the corner, so one more time around. Daniel still right there. What will he do? The two fighting for the win and the championship. For a one and two. They stay side by side. Now the 18 ducks in behind one more chance. The 22 in front. The 18. Closing the gap. Out of four, they're side by side, Hamrick's gonna win it at the line. Daniel Hamrick just silenced the doubters. He's made his own history. Daniel Hamrick wins. He's the Xfinity series champion. Got it. How about that? Your first win? I did. From the top of the car. Daniel Hamrick's a champion. How about those race fans that backflip good enough for you? I've been waiting alone time to do that. Thank you, Joe Gibbs. Everyone at TRD Toyota bell helmets. Everyone here that makes us program what it is. I'm not giving up a lot. People have doubted me. "I just don't believe you can be so fortunate to have good luck, great equipment, great people, you know. What if you have the best driver in the world and a crew chief who is trained by check and Alice, the guy who guided Jimmy all those championships. I think the best driver in the world, the best equipment of world can't win 5 in a row. I think it's the format, it's one race. It's so many things. I actually believe that one of the biggest travesties in this sport is that Jimmy Johnson wasn't pushed onto a higher pedestal for what he did for 5 in a row. And I was in a shop next to him trying to beat him every week and I didn't appreciate it, but every year I get more distant from that run, the more impressed I am at what he was able to do. He would not give Richard Petty his due and he was doing it. People did not give peers in this other sport to not give Dale Earnhardt. Pettit, what he was doing because you can't admit he's better. I think that's true, right? I don't want to sit, you know, I can't go to the tracks on race Jimmy Johnson said man, this is never going to be done again. But now that I'm not trying to do it, I don't believe. And listen, it doesn't have to be. You know, the guy lined up one ten races. Ten races in the championship. Good. I mean, it's a I haven't done enough research to say it's a top 5 or top 8, but it's up there for one of the best seasons ever. Yeah, let's be careful not to compare Kyle Larson to Jimmy Johnson or anybody else after one championship. Like let's get three or four and then we can start having this conversation. This don't get the car before the horse is no question about his talent, but let's go. Let's go there to do three more. And the reason I say that is because, you know, one thing that I loved about Jimmy is that today he's the same guy after championship one. Yeah. And I see those qualities in Kyle Larson, but I don't have a crystal. I can't predict. Who is he gonna be in 5 years? Who's gonna be inside me to go win 7 championship chips? We're talking a decade of racing. So who is he gonna be when he's near 40 years old? Yeah, I don't know. Let's just let him enjoy the first one. What have you done for me lately? "He has given Kyle Larson the ability to showcase his talent to the fan base. I don't think that can be discounted. Yeah, I just so impressed with you. What's not to like, right? So we said this show is about the fans. So let's start off with you Marvin. How do you guys do it tonight? Great. First of all, guys, great job of the coverage all season long. I'm gonna make you guys draining off. He's gonna be sad not earring you guys this year. But I want to give you guys a point with the champion Kyle Larson and my question to you is now that he's got his first championship on his belt. Do you guys think that he is a preseason favorite to repeat and bring home another championship for ray Kendrick? Well, the short answer is yes, and the counter is so wasn't Kevin Harvick. Who went O four? And Marvin, I don't mean to be it's a great question. Of course, the defending champ should always be the preseason favorite unless he's changed the organizations or something that we don't have to vote in on. It's a brand new car. Will Hendrick a diaphragm Larson adapt? I don't know. I actually have, I no longer talk to championship anymore. I talk final four drivers. Because I believe that if you earn yourself into that championship four, then we'll figure it out in Phoenix. But yeah, he's one of the favorites to make the championship for. I mean, it's a great question, Mark, and we appreciate all of your phone calls. All your lawns. I mean, ordinarily I'd say yes, like without thought, but next year, I'd say I don't know. I mean, how can anybody say they're the favorite when we have this culture shock that's going to hit the cup garage next year, not just a new car, but a new way to race it, a new way to build it, a new way for teams to be managed. I don't think we can sit here on November 8th, 2021 and say, we know what the 2022 season is going to look like. When we would be able to do that in any other year, maybe before this one, going back to 1948. This is just such a dramatic sea change for NASCAR. What we do know though is the most versatile driver in the series is Kyle Larson. And with this new car and all the unknowns, I think that plays into his favor. And I just can't believe that hid motor sports isn't going to be at the tip of the spear as far as having good race cars. So I think Kyle Larson is the odds on favor. Yeah, I think matter of fact, I don't think it's true or how close it is. I think by far he's the favorite. But there are some unknowns like the new car. Trevor, come on join us. Yes, sir. How you doing, Jeff? Nate. You guys are almost sure when I was on TV, man. You guys are awesome. I love watching you guys listening to your broadcast and everything. The 5 car is the old 48 after everything that happened last year. Do you guys see like another Jimmy Johnson run going on here where this team just lights on fire like they did? You know, in the early 2000s? So I'm going to jump in and say, Jimmy Johnson doesn't give him enough credit for 5 in a row. I don't think it'll ever be matched. I know Kyle Larson's great, but I don't see it. There's no way. Well, someone went 7 maybe. No one is going to win 5 in a row. 5 in a row, that ship has sailed. That is a that is old. That will never be matched by another race car driver..

"That he's won all around the country, it is actually around the world. It is amazing. Look at this, Steve. Look at some of these races. Well, I can tell right now, I've been a way easier to build a graphic of what he didn't win, because he won them all, right? Start at the top, NASCAR. You got them all world of outliers. That's it. There's not another big one missing. We go down to you sack. I mean, the two big ones I know of, he's won. And Nate, what I think is impressive for Larson is the bandwidth. You know, Rick Hendrick Jeff Gordon allow him to go drive all these different cars, but it's his bandwidth of success that I think is most impressive to me. Whether it's a dirt late model to a world of outlaw to a NASCAR vehicle, if he wins all that dirt stuff, it can't get it done on Sundays. He's another dirt racer that couldn't get it done in the stock car. He's a stock car guy that couldn't win in the dirt, but he literally is winning across the entire platform of motor sport. It's funny when I look at that graphic. I feel like there are some missing. Where's the millbridge? Where's the go kart GoPro marks win that he went? Like nobody cares about, but him. And so I wonder that's about a respect for him. Is it because that he's so good in everything he races? Or is it he wants to be so good in every possible thing no matter what it is? I think it's like maybe a combination of both, right? I think that's it for me personally. It's that I and it's what turned Jeff off and it's what I actually appreciate now is that I think he works the hardest at the cup level because he knows that's where his territories paid to drive, and that's where his commitment is. But don't discount his work to do the rest. Like, and I think it wasn't. I don't know if it just wasn't explained well by him or maybe we just didn't get to see it or his perspective has changed. But what I appreciate is there was no doubt he came to Phoenix as prepared as he could have been, right? No distractions around him. But when he gets a chance to go drive whatever's next in January summer, if he goes to Oscar, whenever he goes and does, he's all in there, too, and he's all in, whether we're watching on. He doesn't care. He doesn't care that the three of us are watching. He doesn't care that the three of us are gonna talk about it. It doesn't matter. I mean, he wants to win in whatever he gets in. And I think that's it. He's just a racer. And in today's world of corporate America required to go racing and I don't think we could be lost on that Rick Hendricks given a lot of people a lot of great steps in their careers me being one of them. And he believed in Kyle Larson enough to give him a job. But on that fire suit that says Hendrick cars dot com. It's more than just a job. He's financed this entire car, he's put his companies on this car, and.

"Everybody, welcome to NASCAR America. Championship week. Championship edition. Let's go with that. What a fun weekend this past weekend was. We're back with a show, obviously this show was about the fans. There should be plenty to talk about today. Call in. Praise your comments. We can put the number on the screen, be sure to call. We love them. There you go, 8, four, four, 6, two, 7, two, two, 7, 6, Kyle Larson, obviously, just an incredible job this weekend. So much fun to watch really how competitive is in my opinion all four drivers had a chance to win all four drivers at one point felt like they could win that championship. I feel like the race cycled at one point, everybody had a chance as you mentioned. And then there was kind of that moment that we knew was going to happen in the 5 team took it quite frankly. They came in fourth of the championship four guys. We can talk about good cars, bad car short runs, long runs, but all of those are just details in the story, the real story is motor sports is all about performance. Sports is all about human performance. I love the race cars Nate. I spent an entire lifetime working on them, but humans make this sport going in the end, 5 human beings jumped over the wall, change four tires faster than the other three teams went from fourth to first, and then we all know if you give Kyle Larson the lead that's a bad thing with about 25 laps to go. Right. He led the final 28 laps to because he is a world class elite driver. And of course, that is the story of the 2021 season, like how insanely talented this guy is. He had a season for the ages, but to your point, he takes the lead because of his team. And Kyle Larson, he won the championship, but he was given the opportunity to win the championship by his team. He didn't enter into that opportunity if not for his picture. He said it, you know, on error, multiple times with us that if the pit crew doesn't hit that money stop and change four tires and 11.8 .8 seconds. And if he doesn't get the number one pit stall, a day or earlier, by winning the pole position, he doesn't win the championship. Well, drivers talk about it all the time, but about how this is a team sport. And I think on Sunday, we saw it all play out on the biggest stage, how important everybody is on a team. It takes everybody to win championships and win races. But let's do this. Let's just go straight in to Kyle Larson and listen to what he had to say about the race. I can not believe it. I don't even think I'd be racing a cup car. A year and a half ago. And to win a championship is crazy. I gotta say, first off, thank you so much to Rick Hendrick, hit her cars dot com. Jeff Gordon, NASCAR. Every single one of my supporters in the stands, watching at home. My family, I got so many of my friends and family here. My parents, my sister, my wife and kids, oh, and a big give me crap. Month and a half ago about how I can't win a Cup race when he's there. So that had a lot of pressure, but there were so many points of this race where I did not think that we were gonna win and without my pit crew on that last stop, we would not be standing right here. So they are the true winners of this race. They're two champions. I'm just blessed to be a part of this group. Every single men are a person. Man and woman at Hendrick motor sports. This win is for all of us. And every one of you. So this is unbelievable. I'm speechless. So much fun to see that enthusiasm. Great burnout. Almost made a lap. That was his goal end up blowing the tires out. But let's do this. Let's go back and really look at how Kyle Larson got here because you said it Steve. It took a team effort. Let's go back and revisit what happened to him and how he got into this position when this race. Yeah, 312 laps, and there was gonna be a lot of flips when it comes to the, you know, different control of the race, who is controlling it, but the turning point for me was really about halfway through the race. You know, chase Elliott had control of it. He had just passed the 5 car and that's when it kind of all swapped. I think we have a piece here to kind of show how it all went down with the 19. Here it is. So right here, you go right here. Larsa has control of the race, right? But then the 9, he's gonna pass him. And at this point, I'm thinking this is what chase Elliott needs, right? We're inside the last fuel run everything's going good. We know green flag pit stops are gonna happen the 19 of Mark trex junior comes to pit road earlier than anyone expects, but while on pit road, Anthony Alfredo, big impact with the outside wall causing the yellow to come out, then it's a race off pit road the 19 right there is scored. You wait about three or four more cars. You're gonna see the leader of the race the 19 of chase Elliott. Somehow, Truex does a nice job staying on the lead lap. That turns out to be very important because then he'll assume the lead Nate when we come to the next restart. You have a pit stops. This seems silly, but the 11 billion 9 off pit road is a huge situation because then that cycles the 9 back another roll. Look at that. The two Hendrick cars are in the third road Jeff. They're not even in the front four cars. Well, that's exactly right. So this momentum shift was huge because you took the two cars that were slowest on a short run and you gave them track position. You.

"Zealand, Australia, every sprint car drive in North America goes to Iowa, and he beats them. While he's racing full time series. But who else can do that? Listen, we're comparing this is like the conversation about who's the very best quarterback ever. Right. This is like one of those conversations. No disrespect to anybody. But they'll all can do that. Richard Petty couldn't do that. I mean, I don't know Mario Andretti is the only other guy. People could say AJ, people say Tony, but not to this level. You know, they're great drivers. I'm not putting anybody down. Again, we're comparing the very best of the very best. Kyle Larson. In my opinion, bring somebody else to me that you can say can do all those types of disciplines at that level. I haven't seen anybody that can do it until this guy. And it's just, I'm sorry. It is what it is. Well, the one thing Mario Andretti has on his resume is a Formula One championship that might be pretty special. That would be what people would probably take issue with. And the problem now is that the world has changed so much. Kyle arsenal never get a shot. Right. He gets it ever run equipment that we would really be able to tell. Just like we're probably not going to see Max Verstappen or Lewis Hamilton run the Knoxville nationals. I mean, Louis Hamilton said he wanted to run Daytona. That would be fun to see. But what I'd like to say is lose hey, I'd like to see Luis Hamilton come around Darlington and I'd like to see Kyle Larson go romana. That would be cool. And I bet you Kyle Larson would do better Monica Lewis Hamilton would do a Darwin. All right, the gauntlet's been thrown down. Given the given the same equipment, I'm gonna make a lot of people out there. Yeah, this is gonna get spread around the world. These are great drivers. I mean, listen, listen, Louis Hamilton is a great driver. And Kyle Larson is a great driver. The versatility is amazing. I can tell you that there's no way in hail. And I won a fair amount of races. If you look at the look in the history books, you know, my name is pretty high in regard to race winners. There's no way inhale. I could have gone to the local dirt track and run with those guys in a street stock car. There's no way. And this guy goes and wins the biggest races. And he wins and in this lab we win the road courses. He wins the half mile and a half. He runs a short track. He wins all of them. On that note about dirt, one of the things that got brought up last night was about how much Larson was allowed to race on dirt by Rick Hendrick this year. Dustin long has a great comment NBC sports dot com. I encourage people to check it out about how Larsen said after he won the championship last night that I knew I had no leverage at all. Yeah when I went to meet with him and Rick and Jeff, I remember that initial meeting, it was great, Rick talked about how much he loved my driving style and this and that and you'd love to get me in his race car and then he got to the end of the meeting and he was like, you know, what's something that you want? And I was like, oh, I'm nervous. You know, I know how Rick Hendrick feels about dirt racing and stuff. This isn't. I'm hoping I'm not shoot myself in the foot right here before I ask a question. I was like, like, I'd like to raise some dirt raises. He didn't shut it down at all. You know, Jeff had mentioned to me a few times before that the culture and how they kind of handled their driver's schedule was changing. But I didn't really believe it. When he was telling me that stuff, but I threw it out there and I've gotten a race way more than I thought I would, you know when I was Ganassi in the beginning, it was nothing. I couldn't really race anything, and then it kind of morphed into 25 races in a year and then it morphed into 25 races and a cup season and I thought I would be something similar to that, but by the end of this year I'll raise probably a hundred total races. So the most I've raised in a long time, especially yo, while I'm a full-time Cup Series driver. Rick Hendrick didn't really allow drivers to race on dirt. And he checked with cliff Daniels who checked with upper management and he essentially said, we're going to let this guy have a shot at it because I can tell it means so much to him. And what he's so passionate about, what do you make about that? Because you've seen Rick Hendrick over the decades and how he operates his race teams. And this was a pretty large exception. He didn't let Casey Kane do this. You know, I'm torn. I'll say this, though, in the era where drivers were not having practices or not, you know, we can't test and all that. Does track time really help. Even though they're completely different cars, we all know the only disadvantages injury. That's the disadvantage. You've got this incredible investment, and we talked about Lewis Hamilton a little while ago. Can you imagine Lewis Hamilton? And motor sports, perhaps the biggest name in the world. Can you imagine him getting hurt in a sprint car? And he can't run his F one car. I mean, that would be a monumental shift. I mean, that would be huge. And so now you come to the cup level, is it okay for Kyle Larson to.

"We saw him right there with the pass on Denny to take the leading goal in the win, but the job that that Hendrick motor sports team did. And assessing what they needed to change in the first battery and then realizing the issue was that the alternative out had come off and then putting a plan together when they got that next opportunity to make all of that happen was just incredible. Now Kyle Larson did an amazing job of driving that race car wing back out there. Not over driving the car and getting himself in trouble, which would have been very easy. But that was just tremendous team effort and what they did and not doing that many times. I don't know how you go, make it happen. Listen, you were very fortunate to be a part of that organization, the Henry organization. I think we saw a glimpse of it last year with the 9 car with Chase Elliott when he pitted at Martinsville. The gag was over the wall, then he goes back in tags. You know, it's like a pop fly when a tag and then I'm gonna go. You know, but they understand the rules. They understand the situation. They're taught that. They practice that. And they'll not it was fascinating because we were birds that view right on the pit box watching those guys. Nobody ever panicked. They lifted the hood. They got up under the one guy. It was just the one guy out there all by himself. And he did a tremendous job. And the direction from the pit box, all his guests. I mean, it was phenomenal to watch because I think if that would have been my team in the old days, Dale and I were setting, we wouldn't have been safe because riches would have been coming. It was phenomenal to watch them recover from that. Well, this show is all about the fans. We want you to call in and ask questions, give your opinion to any and all the topics we've talked about so far, it's one 8 four four NASCAR NBC. Before we start target specific drivers real quick the role. Fourth year, if we go all the way back four years ago, there was a hundred reasons why it wouldn't work. I think what I've seen DJ as a crew chief and not a driver is that is unconventional. It has some of the slowest corners we see, some of the highest breaking we've seen on the back of the backstretch of the front strip while it's definitely different than any other road course we go to. It's delivered all four years in a different way. It hasn't even been consistent. I don't know what to expect every time I go. You got to sit down on the pit box. What did you think of the race in general? Incredible. I mean, just everything that the drivers have to go through with the 17 turns, the two chicanes that they have to maneuver through the trying to stay out of trouble. That infield part seems to be so difficult and just, you know, taking a pace car around there gives you some idea, but then to think about what they're doing at speed, just incredible. But I'm gonna say it. Whenever you go to put together a highlight reel of 2021 and all the races, it should be 35 races and then the roval should have its own. You can make it. Yeah. Minimum of a 30 minute show every single year from that. It is not failed to deliver every single year. In some way shape or form. And yesterday was no different. Yeah. You know, you look at it. I think you don't realize the elevation changes in the infield. That's one thing that as a spectator, even watching it on TV, you don't get a good feel for that. But the other thing is the tire. The tire has to work his and first gear and second gear and it has to work up on the banking and fourth gear. It has to work at high speed. That has to work at load. And that's where it's not perfect for the bank. And it's not perfect for the infield, so it makes a compromise. So there's a compromise every corner of every lap for every driver. That's what makes it excite. Kind of like the role will tire. I don't really fit anywhere. Anywhere anywhere. Okay, everywhere not really perfect anywhere. So we mentioned it's a fan calling shows. We have our first call and guest Tom,.

So ricky you've talked about this sort of changing the way. The cars are being built. You and i talked a few times this weekend. And you kind of describe it as going back to basics. When i talk to brian pattie said it's not anything flashy said we kind of just really. You're doing what we did earlier in the year. Can you really just kind of do what you did earlier in the year and perform the way you guys did on sunday well i think there's you know i it depends. I think for us what we had at the beginning of the year. Was you know a car that i could drive and had good fill and Was able to run inside the top fifteen consistently and On on good days run a little bit better and so you know for us you know yeah get back to basics and kinda get back to what we were doing You know i think hopefully can pay off for us You know everybody is always trying to make their cars faster but but sometimes you go backwards and felt we felt like we went backwards and So go back to your starting point and and kind of starting over as Something that we felt like would be beneficial for us. Okay so now you can kind of see where you were you. Were inside that top sixteen for a good portion and then you fell out there but with chris bush's problems yesterday. Now you really see that a ride ahead of ya huge doubleheader weekend at pocono and i'll let you talk about that in a second you can back that up but the most important thing is i think you have a guys event this weekend out your golf game ready for that i yeah. We golf Wednesday morning but my golf game is not where it needs to be at the moment so i need to go back to basics with that as well I think i've got too far out of the box in my swing Probably don't practice enough but Yeah i mean obviously practice makes perfect so header this weekend at pocono felt like we had decent speed last year there And and we learned from our first race and got better the second race. So you know. I think you know. We showed a little bit of practice. This week in definitely helps our team. you know from A standpoint of of working on things and and making your car better and So we're looking forward to hopefully fire off with a A good kroger camaro come I guess saturday and then being able to tune on it and work on it for sunday so you feel okay about the pocono races but three of the last nine in the regular season are road courses. so does that hurt your causer or help your cause. What do you feel about courses stephanie. Not my best. Serve my strong suit. I felt like the race team has a really good grip on on their race. Cars in a definitely. I feel like the cars are better than what. I have driven on on road courses. Now i just need to do a better job of Making sure we get get better finishes. I felt like at daytona and You know even at at charlotte last year. You know we've had some speed With our road course cars. It's just about putting it all together and not making mistakes obviously the more corners more opportunities for that to happen and so i just need to do my job and i like road. America of ran there in the nationwide series back in the day. So i have some laps there We struggled it Austin they're just mainly being able see. I felt like we were pretty good in the rain. so All in on. I'm looking forward to the challenge you know. It's definitely an uphill battle but you know took a big chunk out this weekend. I m alex. Congratulations on the top. Ten we talked a lot about you on tv because you're upfront contended. That was good to see man. So we'll see you in pocono. This weekend i appreciate it guys. Thanks for having me on. And you know. I told everybody they're like man those. Nbc guys talk about you was like well. It depends if you run good. It's easy to talk about run better. We need to run better more often. Appreciate against our parents. I said hello. Take your parents ricky junior joining us but it was nice to see them fun in all seriousness and and you hope for them that it can continue. Dj hope they can continue the role. Absolutely you know. I mean it's great to have a lot of diversity as far as looking at at the new teams and drivers. Ricky stenhouse isn't outstanding driver and now he's getting the car to be able to show that and to be able to see that talk about different people. We love to do that. So we there's more. Yeah i think ricky fields to that. He's with this organization It's a smaller organization than a hendrick or or gibs or one of those but his input means a lot. Yeah and when he talks about going back to basics he brian when they talk about going back to basics it's their basic. It's not somebody else's basic it's not company basic. It's their basics so adding. He has a lot of confidence in that and it shows in the way he's driving and if you're jd dougherty racing sitting there in the shop today you're like all right. That was good now. We know the direction we need to go. And to to ricky's point. Hey maybe went the wrong way for a little while but now we need to know. We need to go this way for the playoffs. And let's run these playoffs and see if we can get in. Hey when we come back here on motormouth. We'll talk a little chase. Elliott kyle larson and wrap up today's show. And maybe even talk a little pocono. Who knows racetrack coming up this weekend..

Like i was excited for him when chase one at kota in the position to win the race and the rank him out and i was still happy for him and the team is long as our organization is winning. I'm cool with it and and so far. I think we all are as well. If we can keep running good and working together all four of us will be hard to beat so we just got to keep that up one guy who thinks he can beat. Larsen austin dillon.
