Patchwork Junkie with Kyle Dean Houston

"Hello everyone welcome to the addicted mind podcast, my guest today is Kyle Anderson author of Patchwork, Junkie and Kyle. Why don't you introduce yourself? -Ture Brown first of all I just want to thank you, this is. It's always great. People do their best to give a platform for conversations like this, so I really appreciate, it's connected to you and your audience just really quickly first and foremost I, my husband, a father and proud of both of those things I'm also a sales executive and a coach and a spear as well as an author and spach were. Yeah, thank you so much for coming on. And we were just talking earlier about being DADS and and fatherhood, and the beauty that comes with that so I'm excited to hear about your story. And why don't we just start at the beginning? How how did this all start? And then we'll get to how you ended up writing the book, but tell me a little bit about the beginning sure. I'm assuming you don't WanNa know that was born in the seventies or any of that stuff, so we'll just start with the addiction. We'll just leap into it if you don't mind. Yeah Yeah, so, what ended up happening I was a young entrepreneur in Missouri Twenty, four twenty five years old, and I had my own carpet store and some strange fate I got addicted to meth amphetamine in a very short period of my life I started using needles. The only way I'm ever going to quit. I mean I just spiraled into a deep depression and was convinced the only way I was ever going to get sober was an overdose and I tried my best had. I ended up teaching myself how to Cook Meth as an act of survival, and ended up becoming one of the biggest meth cooks Kansas City in the early nineties, instead of having an overdose I got arrested was facing. Thirty years of my life ended up in a cell by myself for twenty three hours a day for almost a year. I'm going to read this story tremendously, but ended up getting a nine year sentence from that, and then when I went off to do my nine years when I was about to get ruled out, ended up, getting indicted by the fans and I was facing life, so a lot of this is in the book. Don't want to ruin any of the story. Then ended up doing seven years by the grace of God it. A total of seven years behind bars walked at the age of thirty five scared to death, no college degree, no network I'd never even sent an email and I went from a ten dollar an hour employee at a call center I was the guy that used to call up. Issue to take a brief clip for your to your engine on your verizon, but went from that to a decade later, becoming a vice president cited two billion dollars of trade. And Bat Artemije story is very complex and difficult side lights. That's it in a very small concise nutshell, so really going through all of it right right from the very beginning to finding a place for yourself. That feels right at at the end. And you are able to to find your way well. I think just like everybody. The answer's Yes. Of course it is, it's a it's a glorious story right living. It was not as fun as failing it I promise you, but the baggage not so obvious. Is that ten years that I spent? Climbing. The ladder of Gordon America was ten years, shame ills and fear that I would wish on anybody so my story with the exception of my beautiful wife, and all of the great things that happened in those in years, but romy. My story really starts when I. Sit down the right book, which was a couple of years ago. Because that's when I let go of the. The baggage that's when I started the healing process as when I stopped white, knuckling everything in life

"On the heels where human rhapsody so which was revered by many people and looked great and the acting was great and then here comes this thing which was very much a v._h.. One made for T._v.. Then Netflix budget so you've thought it'd be a little bit better and also trying to be was directed by one of the Jackass I think right and so it had that element of guns. Oh who can you believe this crazy. He's he's eaten as women's Pussy in the middle of party like that's the opening scene. A Nikki says that scenes in their man that was every newsgroup was saying that like better told the truth Nikki says okay great. I I enjoyed it actually even though it's trash like it was it was enjoyable track. I wanted to be trashier like like like I you know I know it's part of his narrative. I'm GonNa fuck about Tommy Lee and his mom going on there. I just want and then like the when they did do the big famous scenes like the the osbournes stuff regret. It felt really really hokey. Oh it did that. Scene really felt hokey then we're there by the pool and shoehorned in is like this isn't yeah. It's also great like it's a story. It is but the way it's plays in the film it's like did we didn't need to see this and it's not it's like oddly not shocking enough to be L. examining or anything shocking because we've been hearing that story for thirty year right so did you see it. You know a <hes> reenactment was like okay. There's a guy in an ozzy wig. Sniffing began okay done cool he needed return to the heart of though in terms of that because there are rated and they kind of pretend to be edgy but then when when it really comes down to it they kind of chicken out. Don't movie doesn't chicken out. They got a guy eight enough pussy. I seen cost you see that close up and she squirts and it's been bananas involved. I've changed my mind first thing when I got you might want to go to the P._G.. What am I am? I deeply uncomfortable with you using the fray she skorts. That's a whole scene was so crazy crazy couple of with very clear. I did it to push pushback on the heart our argument. This couldn't have been harder yeah by that. I mean relaxing wasn't really good music bio-pic. What's like Buddy Hollywood with Gary Bucy's terrific? Oh I do like that one that wants terrific great balls afire. No that's Jerry Lewis. It'd be a different thinking. That's that's quite writer is moving. That's right yeah kind of count almost famous since its semi-autobiographical fickle about Cameron Crowe because that's still I think that's my favorite bell. The music's fictionalized which is kind of why it works in a weird way because it doesn't it doesn't do the problem with `bio-pics about music is that you're at least me my brain going. Is this accurate like does this sound right. I love look right enough and so you get in your head about it whereas that one didn't have to deal with that which is nice but I was going to. I had another one oh Selena. I'm sorry for interrupting. You know I haven't seen Selena's I was GONNA say <hes>. What's the daughter? No although maybe that would help walk hard what's good. It's good those comedy. What's walk the line walk the line? I remember liking it. Maybe it's a little but <hes> by the number of started company really well. It's entertaining but as a rap van it felt incomplete to me. It was like they're big parts of the story that weren't in there has a lot of those really hokey scenes were like the scene were ice. Cube is writing Fridays fucking ridiculous and the scene where snoop shows up and he hears fucking g thinks he's like Oh..

Credit sounds like that's my wife pointed out and she thought that it was because there's so much footage from the first season they might have to credit him because they've they've incorporated so much of his stuff but it turns out he had he's been editing the entire time and that's why it feels visually only very much more same season. One entirely director Zoe Kravitz is curator. She did something seven hard time haunting. She's wanted by yeah. Oh here's another shadow walking last night. Did you interest-rate yeah. I pick the hell out of that show but when it was nine o'clock last night and Oliver was finally asleep like at nine forty. Like a whole bunch of time of Nicole Kidman <hes> interrogating Yeah Meryl Streep and that's the up in David Kelly courtroom situations during yell out in the middle of that can't wait. Laura Dern is essentially comic relief on the show. I know that's not how that's not how they intended but it's it. You can't not see it as funny because first of all we need to correct ourselves because jeter yourselves a couple of things Jeffrey Nordland is the actor that we were talking about two weeks ago. Not that's not James Tupper who plays Zoe Kravitz husband but Jeffrey Free Nordlinger Gordon do the do the thing with the with the Balabagn's this guy every show this guy's on Nashville on Nashville and he's big little lies. Let's see crawl your fucking bags yeah. That's just didn't you gotta see Garin. It's crime male movie instead to concerts supporting a friend of the show strong wrong phrase see he's. He's an Uber driver and his name is STU. Wait what what is it really oh boy. I thought it was a buddy cop film or are you. Did you legit not no that was like the premise last name was stupor. I thought okay it's a fun. It's it's it's definitely a great movie but it's fun movie. I'm sure I'll shoot at some point. Although I'm not a huge fan of day Batista I know you love Them. I do you love him. I know you do and do them. I see I can't figure out if he's funny or not right relish. We'll tell you what's funny his everything he does. In Guardians is yes great percents so funny just doing that character in this movie would probably be amazing. Yeah I think he's he's a little charming. I guess I like the villain a lot Kinda mad. He didn't get a lot of screen time actor. That was my one complaint Garin..

All those things secretly just does it and so it's interesting because there are stretches where it it does all this stuff and then there are stretches where we didn't and interesting what you find interesting sick I actually I didn't even that not interesting is interest interest. <hes> let me go around the corner cocker who already checked in with a little bit at the state lauper concert on Saturday night terrific okay really enjoyable. Well Jim Fowler on the tonight. Show just let that play. Oh three dudes with legitimate on my God Garin laptop just came wow maybe <music> an inch and a half from going off that table smashing I had it on camera and it would have smashed. There's actually angle and he's GonNa fall with the hinge break. Who knows this was going to be what look another haircuts coming? Manila Kyle Anderson comes in to show his head of hair off and fair encounter and keep your headphones off for a second Linda Elliot on a shot of that guarantees gone berry shaved on the side there. He's flopping it over. Is that a Mohawk no well. I don't know if you made it you could do is it buzzed on both sides right. That's what Mike Schmidt cut. Do you have do you have the well. "He's not a great athlete if he's not. And he's not agreed alley. But he's a good athlete. You don't say. I got his lunch money. Taking Kyle Anderson with the game on the line. I know that Kyle Anderson is east. What were new? Kyle is one of the best nicknames and sports slow. No doubt about it. And I listened I'm giving Luca and the Mavs even a pass. I mean, they're playing against the best team in the Western Conference where you're gonna do. Go. As act like I'm not living this up on. I can. Hey, man. Well, how long is it gonna go going to go through the week is going to go to? That's real. It has worked out exactly like they wanted to which is in a league where everybody is trying to fly up and down and match scoring. They've just decided we're going to be the team that plays you in the nineties and everybody is made wildly uncomfortable in one off games. They just are. I mean, I'm seeing it. And it's frustrating frustrating when a teen takes twenty four seconds did use a shot clock frustrating when they beat you back on defense and set up their defense. And what's the most frustrating is Marcus all Jaren Jackson standing in front of the basket. There's nowhere to go. One Jackson is a frigging Condor. And so there's just no where you know. And Marcus all is at absolute peak of powers, he's leading the entire league in real plus minus and is playing like the Marcus all that one defensive player of the year. And was a was a NBA all star. So I'm living it up. All I can't calf get onboard. I'm on board their defense definitely for real. And it's the right decision. It's the right decision. The place slow this season, according to in predictable dot com their average possession time on offense, a sixteen point one seconds, which is last in the league right behind the Spurs who allowed at fifteen point three. So quite a big difference between twenty nine and thirtieth with Memphis. So they're making the right call to slow the game down play a slower pace, you know, minimize the amount of possessions. I I had a conversation with executive before the season. About actually during preseason or beginning of the season. One of the two I had a conversation when executive about the faster pace, and he's like with more possessions. There's a higher chance that the better team wins games. Right. Because there's more possessions for them to prove themselves as the better team for Memphis by minimizing possessions. I think they're maximizing their defensive ability, and they're minimizing the risk overtime of a superior offense of opponent being approve of more possessions. If that makes any sense, I feel like I'm explaining this very poorly. You're you're explaining very, whoa. You listen. This is exactly this is exactly my theory with the warriors and the rockets or whoever they were playing last year. Right. The the more possessions, the more time they have to expose that. They've got the better talent. Yeah. That's the way. It is. You're mean, like the more possessions, you play the more times they're going to be able to get where they want to. And that's exactly what they want is run up and down. So you keep those possessions low, and and these teams they do get frustrated they get frustrated it's not as fun having to play. A you run a play. We run a play type basketball game. They it's a lot more fun to score one hundred twenty eight right and race up and down the court and get to the basket whenever you want to and make a lot of uncontested layups. And when you run up at team that's not going to let you have that. And I think people are being reminded my calmly Marcus over to the best players in the NBA. They just are and people. Forgot. And now that they're both healthy. I have some bad news though, Chris if the clippers or blazers win tonight, the grizzlies will no longer have the number one record on the west conference. Sorry. So it can only last one day. You know, what's really funny is you look at the Western Conference. What what is what is it like to game difference between like I and eight I think right now, I think the Lakers are eight to two games. Yeah. And I think it's only four and a half games between one and fourteen..

"Memphis got completely destroyed in at Indiana at Memphis, thought it was that Memphis. Was in Indiana oca- and but nonetheless, I mean you'll be quick with this one, but what you mean? You mean they're eighty point, seven offense of rating. Yeah, and especially the offense looked. So the one portion of this I saw when Sheldon MAC was running the show as the backup point guard, but Garrett temple started Chandler Parsons started a Wayne Selden barely played Dillon. Brooks barely played either of Marshon Brooks though, had played twenty two minutes though they were getting blown out here. Kyle Anderson didn't start either. I've feeling that not a lot is gonna make sense for the Christie's Assira Jabe Bickerstaff's coach and it does make sense. It will immediately changed to not making sense again and for the Pacers miles Turner, just got seventy two million. He played twenty minutes demonise the bonus who might be better than him played twenty nine minutes and was more effective. Nate McMillan did say basically that we're not gonna see Turner and Savona together much that those guys were both essentially. Senators, which is a good sign. TJ leaf head to leave with a sprained ankle. Terry Evans was plus twenty three in a revenge game. And then I slight correction Memphis is offense rating was slightly better than I said that was an incomplete game. They were all the way up to eighty seven point four in the full all thank God. Well, probably because the garbage time I'm assuming that's what the difference was and Toronto with a successful start to the quiet Leonard Hera. Although he he had twenty four and twelve, but it was only nine out of twenty two from the field of looking forward to going on and watching the not dip played thirty seven minutes though in this one well, and we can mention one. We're going to see them because that will be the Twitter MBA show on Friday. We're going to do a second one this week because we're really excited about Celtics raptors and Kevin love was five eighteen from the field in this one concepts in eighteen minutes. You know, again, another rookie not playing a ton. They started George hill and Rodney hood. Really, nobody appeared to played particularly well for the Cavs who. Lost by twelve, and I think that will do it for today. Thanks so much for listening. We can. We can. We briefly mention Boban just for oh, oh, yeah. No, yeah, that's what I was missing that from our list. Yeah, go ahead. So Denver ended up winning the game. One seven ninety eight but only one only played eighteen minutes plus.

"Because you got a double then you just fire that ball out in aldridge has been better handling double teams recognizing double teams this year fire the ball out you swing it around somebody gets wide open shot and they're all capable they don't shoot a lot of threes and a big three point shooting team believe guys wide open guys are able to hit shots so that that it's just going to be the key because he's the guy he's like the one guy on that team that if you let him get going he can really really hurt you they really don't have that guy parker is not that guy anymore nobody's guiding more murray's not that guy anderson's not that guy they don't really have that guy there really good because they play as a team they play a system and they don't make a lot of mistakes aches and they make you work on the offensive end but for the for the spurs to have a chance in this series aldridge of probably have to average thirty and do it efficiently it can't be thirty on twenty seven shots and thirty on twenty one twenty two shots and then other guys may not have to score a lot but they'll have to do whatever they score will have to be efficient they they can't be a low efficiency team and win a series like this because talent wise the words you'd have way more talent than they have anyway came here you want to get into a spurs words discussion and again the spurs before the season i thought uh team in the first round not good but without kawhi leonard and like you said a lot of lack of town just real quickly on the on the flip side the main score obviously for the spurs on the flipside main scores durant obviously if they had quite leonard he'd be the guy durant who do they throw on durant who boy my guess would be kyle anderson because he has length and he's a intelligent basketball player he understands angles and inderstanding he just not the athlete right the k d as an athlete i mean katie is an incredible athlete when your nickname is slow mo that means you're not an incredible athlete he's not incredible athlete so durant have the speed or have the quickness over.

"Pour stereo park as as i mentioned earlier we got our guy from jersey straight outta jersey kyle anderson of the san antonio spurs on uh who just dismantled gerald moody's favorite team the cleveland cavaliers they dismantled the cleveland cavaliers so we got kyle anderson on the iron rapport stereo pockets he had a big part in that game lebron james was totally out of character throw the ball against the post now one but two times um and it's looking like a reality is setting in for that team just like i said before the break you were great all their great everybody's of course they're great when they first get down there are exacerbating its new energy everybody's you know in a new place the rest of the league is fucking ready for a break lebron james doesn't take any breaks they stole a couple of games now they get a little tape on these guys they realize all they do is shoot three's if they can't shoot threes there nothing the can't playing defense just like which is a trademark of all tyron lose teams by the way a number of lose that a coach is that a fucking coach what is your take on tyron lou he got he got select he got selected bilo braun to counter transition his way he's got really a coach may put a more that's it he's me and put him on and that cleveland cavaliers team that you were so hyped on just a few weeks ago before the all star break our do they're going to be spending the rest of the season figuring it out now are going to make a push towards the end but like i said you can't just put a hodge podge of guys together midway through the season even if you're with the best player in the whole world that being lebron james it doesn't work like that these guys tape they figure out what they do what they can't do the san antonio spurs boss there are asked the other day they'll they've i think divorced three out of four games since the break we have kyle anderson on the eye of rap repport staring at bacchus.
