"Come through with those opportunities, especially Because early in a game, you can put the opposing team on their heels. You want to make sure that team can run their starter out of their early in the ballgame. You want to get him out early. You want to hammer that bullpen and especially after we saw the performance from Kwon Young came on Saturday where he just dealt and by the way, Murphy McIntyre senate that game. Him who just shoved on the Giants when he was here seven shutout couple of weeks ago was at that game, too. He was he was nails thinking two hits or something in that ballgame and just giants and a really, really tough time and I was like, Yeah, they're not as good against lefties as they are against writings. The other issue was. This is a guy who they had never seen before number earlier this year, T. J. Antone Big right hander for the Reds comes in a relief appearance for the Giants. There was like three perfect innings or something struck out six or seven guys and Dwayne Copper was talking about how anybody who came up last year that was a rookie Anybody who is brand new and baseball in 2020 that wasn't in the ale or the N L. West. Damn good chance. Nobody on the Giants have seen him. I actually thought the one guy who might have a really good shot on Saturday night was Darren Rough, who played in Korea for a couple of years and probably had a good shot at facing Kwon Young Kim. But 14 seasons in Korea, you don't last that long in any job. Just sort of floundering around right, right. Not doing anything. This guy is carving up hitters and what was funny about this? And this is why I thought this was going to be a lost Saturday night is they show the scoreboard maybe between the first and the second inning. Kwon Young Kim's family is there. His wife, his in laws look like Maybe his parents were there. His kids are there there in the stands at Busch Stadium, waving not only that they announced on the P a system welcome to the Kim family, their first trip ever to the United States. I'm like, Dude, this is a scheduled loss. I mean, this guy was here all through Covid for a whole year without his family. They show up and he's pitching scheduled loss That didn't happen. It's kind of like Dave. You remember a few years back the the Giants? Maybe 56 years ago, they were in Washington, D. C on on fourth of July, playing the Nats scheduled lost. You're not beating the Nats on on Fourth of July. You kidding me? Not in D. C. You're not no chance. None chance, So go on here. Kim's family comes out from Korea for the first time ever, and he's on the hill. You bet he's shoving against your San Francisco. Giants anyway, Gabe Kapler talking about how you sort of got to stay the course You gotta knock in some runs in these situations. You got to score a few more. I want to get into this in just a minute. Actually, we'll do this on the other side. Just keep Kaplan got some criticism for how he used the bench. How you went to Lamont Way Junior. Even though Darren Rough has been hot lately. It was a right handed pitcher and rough just has not hit right. He's quite as well as he said lefties not just this season, but in his career. He's a much better hitter against lefties probably means that, uh, doesn't mean much of anything other than we've seen them do this all year to the tune of what's at 58 wins or whatever they have Right now. It's tough to get upset with a team that still has the best record in all of baseball. And and really, I mean, I know they're close with the Dodgers. I know the Dodgers were a game back, and they're trying to get healthy in their own right. And there are scary team you're going to see him seven times over the next week and I'm not thrilled about that, like I don't love don't love watching a stressful Dodger baseball. But I would like the Giants to to build a bit of a cushion here, so we got to get into how capitals using the bench on the other side. I've got no issue with it. Some people take exception yesterday in trying to trying to break this thing open or get a few runs and get the offense going. But I think he's got a case to it. And capital has a case for the movie made. So we'll talk about this. The rough and wave situation yesterday more sound from Gabe Kapler and from Darren Rough, all that is coming up when the leadoff spot continues, can be on 145 and 68 easy sports leader. "Post game wrap time as we are here in San Francisco Giants in ST Louis, when they called the car Don't about final score of 3 to 1 before we get into the rap. First, we're going to pause for station identification. This is the KNBR, Northern California, Honda Dealers Radio network. Is the flagship of giant space ball. Double K NPR KNBR FEST. San Francisco These sports Lear Dave Flemming. Randy went with you here before we talk about this Giants Cardinals game. I think it is important. We get you up to date on a story that's happening and unfolding elsewhere in major league baseball. In fact, in Washington, D C Where the Padres and Nationals are playing tonight. And obviously we're not there and we're just getting bits of the news that's coming out of Nationals Park. That game has been suspended in the sixth inning. Not that the score really matters. But with the Padres ahead in that game, 8 to 4, the game has been suspended. There were gunshots heard and it caused a very scary and chaotic scene. Inside the ballpark players. Umpires running off the field. Some Padres players were running into the stands and grabbing family members. And taking them. Undercover fans were first instructed to stay in the ballpark and stay calm. That wasn't really happening. Ultimately, fans were instructed to leave the ballpark out of one specific. Gate. It apparently has been confirmed that there were two gunshots. Outside of the ballpark, not inside outside of the ballpark, but in close proximity to the park, maybe just right outside one of the gates, and apparently, it's possible that that someone or some people have been shot. So our thoughts are with, uh, anyone who, uh, was shot and hopefully everybody is going to end up being okay but confirmed that there were gunshots outside the ball Park in Washington, D C The game has been suspended breaking news. That's the only information we have. But I thought it was important for us to at least Passed that along before we talk about this Giants Cardinals game and obviously a nightmare scenario. Hopefully hopefully Everything is ultimately going to be okay in Washington, D. C. Yeah, that's Very scary situation. That's when You know, you forget about the baseball as a As a job and, um, you know, it's It's life and How scary that must be. Not only as a, you know, I'm thinking about an ex player. You're being on the field, but people in the stands and You know, the players you just mentioned ran into the stands grabbing family members. Um You know, that's that's when that's when you realize what's important. You know the people who love and family so hopefully everybody's okay. Just a scary situation out there in Washington, D. C. Yeah, so that's that's all we have from D. C. But anyway, I just thought it was important for us to pass along what we know, breaking news from elsewhere in Big League baseball. The news of this game, Randy and I don't know if you agree with me or not. But you know, the Giants lose 3 to 1 Giants had some chances. They put some pressure on the bullpen in the seventh inning in the ninth inning. Giants did a really good job of fighting to the end in this game. But the story to me is Kwon Young Kim. I mean, he's pitched two times now against the Giants a total of 13 innings. He's given up a grand total of six hits and no runs. Nobody has pitched the Giants tougher this year. Dongguan Young Kim, the the left handed veteran for the Cardinals. When we go to your eyes, how's he doing it? Yeah, he was magnificent. And, you know, if you look at the I guess the big picture of the game and all of the pictures that through for the Cardinals Come through the softest, um You watched. How ya doing? Her? Walked him through at bats and how they worked at Pat's. Yeah, he moved to corner from corner to corner to to quadrant quadrant up down in out. And you asked how he did it. Surgically. You know it. He's not a power pitcher. He's a pitcher. He's an artist. That slider that he has is an absolute weapon. He uses it on both sides of the plate. He throws it for strikes. He throws it behind in the count. He's able to get swings and misses when he's ahead in the count. He really didn't use his fastball He almost used his fastball is a As a distraction like he would float it up there by your eyes. You'd see it, and then he dropped the slider off of it. And he he really did a very, very nice job. And you know that there's a reason why he's thrown was that now 20 plus scoreless innings and been one of the best pitchers for the Cardinals. Was absolutely surgical with all his pitches. I didn't even talk about change of which he started mixing in late in the game. And you know he's he's different than most of the pictures that we see today. All high velocity, the top of the zone, swing and Miss stuff. Yeah, he can get swings and misses but He induced tons of weak contacts. I mean, you go through the scorecard in 6363635363643446. Lot of weak contact the middle of field and then right hand hitters rolling over the ball and weak contact. So Um, a really good job pounding the zone with with all of this stuff today, and ultimately, I mean, look, the Giants didn't have an at bat, where the runner in scoring position until the fifth inning, so I mean, the Giants were just neutralized. Through the first four innings almost entirely. Ultimately, the Giants had nine at bats. Where the runner in scoring position in this game, the Cardinals only had two Cardinals sort of did what the Giants typically do. They hit the two home runs and those ended up standing up. And the Giants only got the one hit with a runner in scoring position all game long and the Cardinals another bullpen can be erratic. The numbers aren't great overall, but they have guys with big time stuff, and they use that stuff to get through some of those problems spots late in the game. Yeah, we saw the bullpen come in, and Completely different than him. No. Nobody threw a ball under. 94 95 miles an hour. Their fastball there change up to the same speed as Kim's fastball. Swing and miss stuff. And you know when you talk about late and ball games, the ability to miss bad stability to come in and with traffic and get strikeouts, and that's what Cabrera did. When, um healthy, wasn't able to get a clean inning. Cabrera comes in with traffic on there, and he is able to come in and wipe out a couple guys with high 98 mile an hour fastballs. And you know, race is just something special guy that has the velocity but also has that nasty slider, nasty changeup. Which is more like a starter than a Reliever. Yeah, Their bullpen is all over the place. But tonight they were able to mix and match and get get the pieces in there when they needed to, and get the right guy to be able to get the strikeouts when they needed it and his vital thought before we take our break. I mean, tonight is a game where I think it's an example of how The Giants. Injuries have impacted this team they kept on winning. I mean, it came into the game a season best 26 games over 500. So the Giants have found ways but Tonight tonight where if Longoria's healthy If Brandon Belt's healthy, some of those sort of everyday players are in there Maybe Gabe Kapler has a few extra moves to make. He made some moves, but maybe he's got you know. Alex Dickerson doesn't have to hit against Cabrera in a big spot in the seventh inning. That's a tough matchup for the Giants Tiro Estrada against Reyes in the ninth inning. Maybe you have a move remaining still to make their There's no knock on either of those guys. But those are not the matchups When the Giants have built this team they've dreamed about. We want the best possible matchups in the biggest spots of every game, and they have been largely successful. And maybe tonight's an example of some of those injuries starting to pile up in the James Can't quite match up in exactly the same way. Yeah, too. Quick thoughts on that. You.

"Fastball got him. And it was a great pitch and and that was kind of it for the Cardinals tonight, and then he gets to go back out in the bottom of the eighth. What's up. Zero he gets Goldschmidt, Audi retires. Ah, Renato. I mean, that's going to build your confidence. And then he gets to hit. If he gets to try and bun the guy throwing 100 miles an hour. Uh, and he didn't advance the runner. But he got the bunt down, and that's that's a win. That's a win. When you've got two career at bats, and you get thrown into his pack as the checks don't have any guys left on the bench. So Uh, he looked like he was having fun out there big grin on his face in the dugout in between innings. This was a big night for him, and he gets the win on top of it, So he'll be my guy. Great pick. Okay? Yeah, that smile that he had in that first inning when he came off the plate. I mean, told it all think about all that That guy's been through to get another chance. So I hope he takes advantage of ID. Dave made a great point. He walks Uh, Lars Newt bar, right? And then he just goes right through Goldschmidt and Granada, who are giant killers and It's kind of backwards from the way that I would recommend him going out about it. You know, next time like maybe get Newt bar and then you don't have to stress out about those other guys, but oh, well. Had a different idea, saying that that wasn't so hard. Right guys. Good pick biggest out of the game. All right. Well, then, at least you guys all picked and nobody picked. The guy hit two home runs. Mikey Ostrovsky. Both were really impressive in their own right. He's nine for 10 against T. J. McFarland. I mean, T J McFarland's got to be thinking. How are you letting me face this guy? Uh, first day back in the big leagues for him, Uh, But I, you know, I said it on the telecast. I think we were all talking before the game, and I said, I just feel like there's a hot streak coming for Mike Jastremski. He was hitting the ball hard before the break. You know, he had the hand injury at the light. His literally his last at bat in spring training gets hit in the hand. So then the start of the year he was feeling great start of the year. He's not feeling great. Any tweaks is oblique or whatever it was. Then he runs into the wall and hurts his thumb. So that's three different injuries in the first half. He's healthy now he was swinging the bat Well, he's rested. He's fresh, and now he's hit two home runs, and I just feel like There's a big second half in Michael Stransky. So he's my guy tonight. Yeah. Good pick. Great pick. He had two home runs and you're not picked. I'm taking your your the last pick here. I'm okay with that. Yeah, no kidding. All right. What's on deck sponsored by California Four dealers may be evidence that there were just a lot of contributors. And I expect we'll see that again tomorrow. So one hour earlier start time, it will be 4 15 Pacific time. And we're assuming that Anthony DeSclafani is going to go. We don't know that for sure. Kevin Gausman not pitching tonight. Probably not going to be ready to go back with the team tomorrow. Uh and KK Kwon Young Kim. Who pitched great against the Giants here in San Francisco is going to go. It's a lefty will see the right handers hitters in there. And we'll see if the Giants can make it two in a row against the Cardinals. Yeah, Disco, funny son the ball great. He's got his 10th win in the first half, which set a personal record for him, So he's just been outstanding. And Cam, I believe has been the Most consistent Cardinal starter this season. They've had a ton of injuries. Um, I think three of the guys that they expected to do a lot of the heavy lifting in this rotation. Are on the isle. So you know they're reaching out to some other guys and chemist on the ball. Well, so that you know, the Giants have their work. Cut out for them, Darren. Rough secret weapon tomorrow, the to face each other and, uh, Korea. So Darren Rough knows KK. I think it's I think it's a big game, too, because you get to this part point in the season. You want to just try and start winning series, right? You got three games so they can win that game tomorrow. Then you take the first two out of three. And as long as you keep winning series and Like like we talked, Um, take him in blocks of like 10 games and Six and 473 and just keep winning series and you won't get in trouble and maybe a day to give Crawford arrest and make sure that hamstrings just a okay. Yep. That's tomorrow. Game two of the series. What's on deck sponsored by the Ford F 1 50 Lightning. And California four dealers visit by four now dot com to see deals on trucks and SUV's right now and it is.

"Doesn't sound like a big deal, but Nolan Arenado doesn't really take too many bad swings. He doesn't get off his legs and kind of wave at breaking balls. So To me. That was a clue of how good his breaking ball was early in the game. He was up to 94 Miles an hour, which I thought was great. Early in the season he was pitching around. 91 ish and he didn't lose the movement. You know, sometimes when you add MPH, your ball gets straighter. His ball wasn't straighter. He was. He threw some sinkers today that you hear guys taking check swings. They just couldn't pick it up. Even the single that, uh, gave up for the you know, for the R B to Edmund was was a jam shot like they They just could not square up his ball, his balls moving all over the place He's got Sinker running one way the slider moving the other. And I thought the slider was crisper than he's had all season. Sometimes it gets a little bit round because he gets underneath it a little bit. I thought it was really, really sharp. So Um, a lot of really good signs from Logan Web today. I thought he threw the ball outstanding. Um, you know, just four innings, but he's building back up and I think if you're the Giants and you see the way that he threw the ball without kind of relying on a changeup, which he tends to do sometimes You've got to be really excited about what the future holds for this young kid. I caught myself. I had to call myself out tonight. I turned into Hawk Harrelson. I was just out now whining. There were so many little bloops and bleeders and ground balls. Well, he makes a great pitch and look at that. I just I just became a total Total homer because I'm with you. I thought Logan was outstanding, Really Good Pick. He's got electric stuff and you watch him and I I made the comment. I said, and the older he gets he's gonna realize he doesn't throw 100% all the time. And he's going to get a little wiser and those, but But like you said the lawsuits and he still had the movement, I mean, That arm stays in shape. He's got electric stuff and the older he gets, he's just going to get better and better, And he's going to be dynamite. He's got some great stuff. You probably stole Joe's Gak as Joe and Logan are like their like tight, uh, my best, but I feel like I've been there for all of Logan's great moment as a professional. Do you want me to take my neck back? He's got to go to Plan B Plan B. There's still a really good pick out there. Yes, there is. I think a couple really good ones actually. Go ahead, Joe. All right, I'll go with a guy who was the winning pitcher tonight. J. Jackson. I love that. He got the win. I guess it's of scores discretion there. The Web doesn't go long enough and you get to pick the the most effective reliever in your mind and And I thought J. Jackson was exactly that and You know, the seventh inning at bat. I mean, he comes in. He hasn't thrown a pitch in the big leagues in two years. Pitching in Japan last year, well traveled. I might have felt like a rookie out there again, and it's it's a five run game. The bases are loaded to assess the spot where the Cardinals need the hit to get back in the game. And we knew coming into the scouting report was. He's getting a lot of doubts in Sacramento, and he's doing it with sliders. He'll keep throwing it over and over and over again and facing Bader there, he throws the slider six times in a row. Count goes full and then Could sneak attack fastball got him. And it was a great pitch and and that was kind of hit for the Cardinals tonight, and then he gets to go back out in the bottom of the eighth. What's up zero? He gets Goldschmidt out of your retires. Ah, Renato. I mean, that's going to build your confidence. And then it gets to hit. If he gets to try and bun the guy throwing 100 miles an hour. Uh, and he didn't advance the runner. But he got the bunt down, and that's that's a win. That's a win. When you've got two career at bats, and you get thrown into his pack as the checks don't have any guys left on the bench. "And and I think you're right. All three of those are going to continue to battle. Your cardinals always kind of seemed to be right there at the very end, and and I never want to count them out. Is there in the midst of this in central as well? Yeah. Well, the Cardinals have had a lot of injuries and with their starting pitching, they were looking forward to having miles. Michael is back and all star in 2018. He had subpar season in 19, then got injured. And has had trouble trying to get back into the rotation. He pitched four innings earlier this year and the first three and things looked like flashes of 2018, and then he had more problems than had to go back on the injured list. And he has been doing throwing off the mound and and we'd like to see him back sometime mid to late August and the same project clarity. You had an oblique problem and he got hurt. Batting And since clarity got hurt right at the first part of June, the Cardinals have been sub 500. You have clarity out. Michael is out. Carlos Martinez has gone on the injured list and is probably out for the rest of the year. They've added Wade LeBlanc, who has stepped in to be like a number three starter, and Adam Wainwright and Kwon Young Kim have really looked good Kim as a stretch of about 15 scoreless innings going right now. As he was able to throw shut out ball for seven of those innings against the Giants and then six against the Cubs in the last two outings, So you don't want to really card count the Cardinals outreach because they have been a second half team. But where they're going to get the help and what they're going to do to line up their starting pitching. And if you can get to the Big three at the end of the bullpen, Genesis Cabrera in the seventh, Giovanni Gallegos in the eighth All star Alex Reyes in the ninth. The Cardinals have been successful, but it's getting to those guys and cut down arm walks way too many walks in the first half. They've walked in 20 runners with the bases loaded. And hit several more, and that's just way too many for a little over half a season. They cut down on those and get some starting pitching lined up, then they may be able to make a run at the teams ahead of them. And right now, the Cardinals and Cubs are tied. The Reds are ahead of them, and group and the Milwaukee Brewers are sitting there in first place. The big news tonight around Major League Baseball. Kunio Junior. Looks like he Torres M. C l will have seized in in surgery out for the year. Um, when you look over at the nationally geese The Mets are sitting there on top. The Braves have been making a run, but that's going to hurt them quite a bit. It might be one of those things like the central, You're going to have to win the East in order to make the playoffs. Yeah, I think so. There. You're gonna have to be a champion there, and we know the Phillies can score some runs as they displayed that recent series with the Chicago Cubs and here over the weekend, uh, they're going to make a run. And, uh And don't count out Miami having a say in who wins it. I don't think Miami can win the division, but they can sure certainly have a an influence on who does. As their competitive. The Cardinals managed to win all the games in that season series, but they were all they were all tight ball games at one point, so they are going to have to win to be able to play in October and And I still think the walk cards are going to come out of the West a little inside baseball for folks. Now that the announcers are able to get back into the ballpark and travel. How much is that major job a little bit easier. Which made it tremendously easier and the fact that we're able to go down on the field and talk to the manager, the talk with Mike Schultz and to talk with the players. And to be able to get a little insight to what's going on. That's what was missing out of the shortened season and out of much of the first half. And when you're doing games off of a monitor, you're at the mercy of the T V director, and you don't have that particular TV director in your ear telling him where you're going. That's why so many of us have called replay like it was alive. Play at the moment. I only had one of those. Fortunately, but I know many of my colleagues have been caught by that, where it looks like the the players live up there on the screen when it's actually replay from Maybe earlier in the ballgame earlier in the season, Even if we had a director in our ear, we know where they're going with that, But that's not possible. The announcers need to be back in the ball parks. They need to be in the booth where they can see what they need to see to call the game that goes for radio and TV announcers, and it's a shame not everybody can travel and be in the parks. Well, I mean, it is that connection that the fans have to the game because if you're there and you get to go see the skipper beforehand, and you get a chance to talk to the players. Then you get to help Tell that story to educate the fans as you're calling the game, And for the last 18 months we've been haven't been able to have that. And there's you can tell. There's just a little bit of a disconnect that now started here back on the radio. You're kind of getting a better idea what's really going on? And get a better feel for how those players look at what they're doing Day to day. And that's the great thing about baseball. Richie. You, you cover it day to day you go to the ballpark, and you do your prep work beforehand and Read and listen, and MLB network has the quick pitch on where you.

"John Rooney joining us here on CBS Sports Radio. John, How are you? I'm doing fine, Rich. Good to be with you. Thank you so much. Okay, one game tool until we get to the All Star break. We've been talking tonight about what's the biggest surprise for you. What's the biggest story for you that you've seen or run across in the first half of the season? I think the San Francisco Giants the fact they're going to the brake, and they'll be in first place in the National League West. We kept hearing from the World Series last year with the Dodgers and right on through spring training. It was all going to boil down to the Dodgers and the Padres in the West and long behold, the Giants have a really balanced team, and they've been playing without Longoria without Posey without belt. Yet they continue to find ways to win games. Score runs pitched the ball well, and they're really balanced if you bring in a left handed pitcher, even fourth or fifth inning. And gave capital is going to turn the lineup over and go to his bench and he'll bring in a right handed lineup. He has four or five guys on the bench. He can go to and really put up a terrific game the rest of the way, and that's why I think their first place right now they do so many things well. They don't have a team loaded with superstars. Crawford is excellent. I mean, he is just absolutely terrific. The third All Star for him, and Buster Posey is a superstar, but they don't have Bumgardner anymore, And a lot of those players are gone from the three championship teams. But they do have some good players and that's why they're in first place. You know, when you look at them in the sum of their parts, because they're not going to have a bunch of guys that are gonna be on the front of USA today had a daily basis, But they just do all the little things right that What I'm watching games. Other teams just don't play that fundamental style of baseball is Are you seeing that when you see the Giants play? And that's what I do see Richie and I see it because they do have players who know how to play the game. And if somebody is not throwing strikes are doing the job. They find somebody who will And for the most part, their roster has been very, very steady, and I think there are very good and well balanced team that is going to contend as we move deeper into the second half of the season. And from watching them play and the Cardinals won two out of three against them, and the three games were good and the game the Giants won. They broke open late when you have Slater coming off the bench and and he can hit for power. And when you have Darren rough, but I thought rough was pretty good with Philadelphia. But he's a good ball player and a good power hitter with the San Francisco Giants, so they should be very proud of what they've done as we've just passed the halfway mark. We're talking with John Rooney right now for the ST Louis Cardinals are guests here on CBS Sports Radio. What else do you see out the National League? Let's go to the nationally Central right now. Brewers leading everybody else. Reds, cubs and Cardinals all chasing them. What's the story in the central Well, I have to say the Brewers have made some pretty good moves and it didn't cost them a lot of prospects and they continue to make some changes and continue to win games. And you better get to them before you get to the seventh inning because their bullpen has been really good. And when hater comes into the game, he likes his chances of closing games up, and so did the brewer fans. And that's why they're in first place in the central Division. They get well enough. They catch the ball well enough, but they they've had Really good bullpen, and I guess they're getting enough starting pitching. We haven't seen them in a while, but we're going to see a lot of them. In fact, at the end of the season, they're back to back weekends of series against the Brewers and the Cubs for the Cardinals. That will make up. I think the last 13 games on the schedule. So you like to see your teams that you're competing with in your division down the stretch, and the Cardinals will see that they just don't want to get too far behind. And they're hoping to have some people back like Jack clarity. Maybe Miles Michaelis mid to late August, but they have to tread a lot of water and they are playing better baseball. I like the way they're playing on this road trip. Even though they are four and five on the trip through Denver, Colorado, where they won only one out of four, but took two out of three from the Giants. And after winning a Saturday night game in Chicago, they have a chance to win two out of three against the Cubs and go into the break A game under 500. This is a team that will battle the Cardinals will battle Cincinnati looks good, and they're getting some of their people healthy and the pitching and there and the way Castano's has played in the first half, he has been a real leader of their offense. And joy. Votto seems to be able to chip in the great experience there. He has been an M V P in the National League and He's a guy that can make a big difference. Jesse Winker had a three home run game against the Cardinals. Cincinnati I think is going to be in contention, but it's going to have to be a division winner to play in October Rich because of the way things are stacking up in the West. It sets up where you're gonna have the Western Division champion and maybe two wild cards out of the West. Wow. It is going to be a tight race there and and I think you're right. All three of those are going to continue to battle. Your cardinals always kind of seem to be right there at the very end, and and I never want to count them out. Is there in the midst of this in central as well? The Cardinals have had a lot of injuries and with their starting pitching, they were looking forward to having miles. Michael is back and all star in 2018. He had subpar season in 19, then got injured. And has had trouble trying to get back into the rotation. He pitched four innings earlier this year and the first three and things looked like flashes of 2018, and then he had more problems and had to go back on the injured list. As he was able to throw shutout ball for seven of those innings against the Giants and then six against the Cubs in the last two outings, So you don't want to really card count the Cardinals outreach because they have been a second half team. Of where they're going to get the help and what they're going to do to line up their starting pitching. And if you can get to the Big three at the end of the bullpen, Genesis Cabrera in the seventh Giovanni Guy goes in the eighth. All star Alex Reyes in the ninth. The Cardinals have been successful, but it's getting to those guys and cut down on walks way too many walks in the first half..

"Mean, these both these teams. They have a lot of guys on the injured list. And so perhaps the break couldn't come at a better time. Get some extra days built in there And then maybe you come back in the second half, and you're pretty much ready to go for the Cardinals. Clarity? No. Michaelis, Jordan Hicks. No Dakota Hudson and for the Cubs know Duffy? Nobody. Obviously they have had the likes Of Nico Horner on the I l and as well. They have dealt with injuries to hobby Baez, Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo. Cubs take the field and we get ready to go here tonight. Let's give you the starting lineups at first four, the visiting ST Louis Cardinals. Dylan Carlson will lead it off in right field. Paul Goldschmidt will that second He's a first base. Zach Davies, Alright for the ST Louis Cardinals. They are 12th in the league, and it runs per game. 14 15 teams and on base percentage of 11th in slug. And they will be facing exact. It is gone. It bounced back into the field of play, but it is a two run home run for Nolan. Ah, Renato. About our nado. He homered in each game of the Syriza third as many nights that had the Cardinals up top to nothing. Trend. Christmas Save Ryan Weathers with a diving two out two on catch to end the first and strange too. In scoring position. It was a four run opening half of an inning for ST Louis Kwon Young Kim, their starter, retired the first date first hit. He gave up to Ryan Weathers, his counterpart. That was his first major league not with two outs in the third bottom four. The bases were loaded when Kim walked in the game's first run. For the Padres, and then he faced the battery face many times in Korea, Hasaan Kim of San Diego. Great. You inside Ball four. Unbelievable. He's walked another one third walk. He's given up this inning and the second one that forces in Iran and that's going to tie it to and that was it for Kim, After rolling along through the first eight batters he was done after three and a Heard the Padres grab the top side of the school board on a sac fly. Then Yvonne Castillo face tennis's Cabrera and like Weathers, he, too, picked up his first big league knock with this one. "And one with 2 45 p R a N 18 appearances, he's only walked five batters. In 22 innings in his job is to keep this one close. The Padres have added Iran here in the bottom of the sixth lead 5 to 3. They've got Trent Grisham its second. Manny Machado would first two down for their number three hitter tonight. Jake Cronin Worth who was one for three. Left handed batter. Diego's A Glance back to the runner with second on the first pitch breaking ball is in for a strike. So he's the fourth pitcher of the night. Kwon Young. Kim was dazzling through three and and just got away from him in the fourth. He walked three batters forced in a couple of runs on bases loaded walks did not get out of the inning. Anuses Cabrera, Ryan, Helmsley and relief and Al Giovanni Diego's began to look back at the rudder. Grisham, its second of the old 12 kronen worth, and he missed outside with a change up one ball in one strike. That will be a challenge for Mike Schultz. Cardinals Get to the finish line with the bullpen. If they can stay close Pull, you know, within a run or tie it up for you. Maybe even go up Iran. We're gonna look at needing to get a couple of innings from Diego's. He did that earlier in the week and then perhaps. Two innings from Alex Reyes as well, who did that? Earlier in the week. On the same night, those two guys in Milwaukee 11 The swinging ball line foul down the right field line, a fan of the glove on and a batting helmet on reaching out over the concrete wall. She was unable to make the catch. Added in her glove for a moment, and then the security guard handed it back to her. I think she might be a stadium employee, and now she has singled out a kid and giving the ball to the young fan down the line. So good job by all. One into the count on Cronin Worth Cardinal scoring early on the home run by our anatomy, the first lead two to nothing. San Diego with four in the fourth run in the top of the six for ST Louis, and now runs so far here, Bottom six for San Diego. The one to swing and a miss got it with a fastball. Ronin worth down on strikes in the inning is over, but a run on a hit two men are left on. And at the end of six, it's the Padres five of the Cardinals.

So the bottom of the third on Sunday night baseball here on ESPN Radio Dan Shulman, Chris Singleton and a two to nothing lead for the Cardinals in the first inning home run by Nolan are Renato Kwon Jeong Kim. Mrs. Low Ball one. To Haas, son Kim on now. The next pitch is lying down the left field line, but it is a foul ball just foul deep down the line. On how some here will make the turn back from first base and head back towards the plate. He got out in front of a breaking ball on this wall singing had a lot of hooked to it. It was fair by a Fair amount, but it wound up about 45 ft foul. Cast those hands just a little bit out in front. The pitch seven year age difference between To South Korea. "A fielder's choice, unable to advance the runner back to the top of the order for Tommy Edison, who takes a change up outside. All one singing. How far would you say Manny Machado was from home plate at the moment, The ball was bunted by Kim. Maybe 10 ft. No one or the one old rather was swinging a foul off one and one. Do you have some Super stat machine? No, I don't exactly know. I don't have statcast for that. I was going to say about 20 ft, but still We agreed he was really close. Like he was right there When you got your heart to me, he was in the photo. He was in the photo 11 fastballs there one into. Yeah. Photo bombed. The picture of the dead is it absolutely did. And if the third baseman can photo bomb the bunt attempt the chance of the bunt attempt being successful. Is reduced. That's just basic analytics to nothing. Cardinals top of the second throw to first and Kim back in. So we have Kwon Young Kim, the pitcher for ST Louis, and we have Ha Sung Kim, the shortstop for San Diego. No relation between the 21 Ball two strikes the Count on Tommy Edmund. And a swing and a bouncing ball to the right side, the second basement Marcano to Kim at second to force him the lead runner. They don't have a chance for two and Edmund will reach on the fielder's choice to down. I know you always want to keep a man out of scoring position and cut off that lead runner, But I just wonder you let him get the second. He's the picture. He's gonna have to stay out there, all lady He might have to try to score from second base what you might be able to gain when he goes back to the mound. Now I know it's just automatic. Cut this guy off. Keep a runner out of scoring position, but sometimes And work to your advantage of the picture stays out of the base paths. All any long, admin. Pretty good speed. He's the runner at first is Dylan Carlson takes a slider in for his strike. Cardinal right fielder had a base hit and then scored on the home. Run by Ah, Renato. In the top of the first to Carlson, now 11 for 24 on the season against left handed pitching. Backed out of the box. A couple of steps now back in there is adamant, draws to throw at first cardinals to Padres Nothing. San Diego 15 to 4 Friday night, had a 5 to 1 lead and then held on late as the Cardinals got two in the eighth and one of the night And then the Padres obliterated the Cardinals. 13 to 3 last night, now was swinging a ground ball to short. "Jim, passable back on baseball tonight, taking you to first pitch for the Cardinals and a Padres. It's the serious finale San Diego in search of a sweep, having won the first two by a combined 18 to 7 count. The Cardinals don't go with Kwon Young Kim. They are five and own. It starts this season. He's a lot of one run in each of his last four starts been awfully consistent. Meantime, Ryan Weathers, fellow left hander onto the bump of four San Diego. The reason there was so much anticipation for this season for the Dodgers and Padres. Robbery was not only because they met in the post season last year because the pods added to accord that includes tattoos, Junior and Machado fortifying their staff. He is showing his displeasure with a little shaken ahead. He is not happy that he is out. He was fantastic. Tonight, Rays would go on to lose that deciding game of the 2020 fall Classic 3 to 1, including the postseason. "But the concern comes from the pitching staff because there were late injuries to Nelson Lament who had a two zero nine era in twelve starts and then clubbing who enforce starts at a two, eight, four era for the padres. To be determined when it comes to the extent of their injuries and how much time they will miss, and that is something to look out for certainly during wild card weekend and ultimately if the padres. are going to be short handed so. The number five team the St Louis Cardinals they're the only team in major league baseball not to play the full sixty games but based on winning percentage at thirty and twenty eight will be your five seed and have the pleasure of facing off against the padres. The car knows one the three at of five against the Milwaukee brewers over the final weekend to clinch the second place finish there in the NFL central there were led by Paul Goldschmidt who played in fifty eight games hit. Three Oh four six home runs twenty one rb is, let's see Tommy Edmund Hinton to fifty playing in fifty five games. Colton Wong hit to sixty five Yada ear Molina hidden to sixty two. So this team offensively really isn't GonNa Light you on fire and ultimately they are in the second place position due to their pitching staff and it starts at the top with Adam wainwright three, one, five era in ten starts this year but then it was by committee I, mean this team had. To use a ton of arms this year Jack clarity four, nine, one era in nine starts Daniel punt stay Leone in eight starts set a four, nine, six Era Dakota. Hudson was very good for them to seven seventy are a and eight starts Kwon Young Kim and I'm one, six, two era in seven starts in then Austin. Gummer. who had a one, eight, six and four start. So look for Wainwright flair and probably long young Kim to start the rotation for the postseason but. The cardinals once again advanced to playoff baseball and Dan. Impressive showing from them for the amount of games that they had to play in the amount of days coming down the stretch. But the sixth seed Miami Marlins the surprise of the National League it begins here honestly the rest of the teams you could have said, yeah. Okay. They made the postseason will the marlins they were nowhere near this picture during the beginning of the season and at thirty one and twenty nine in the sixth seed. Winning three of their last four certainly, an impressive showing all the way through the year they were led offensively Miguel Rojo sit three or four. In Forty Games Garrett Cooper had to eighty three in thirty four games as use Aguilar hidden to seventy seven Brian Anderson led the team with eleven home runs in fifty nine games an impressive showing from him, but the pitching side of things is where the pleasant surprise comes. And from Miami and South Beach I mean they have been a lot of fun to one a lot of watch. Excuse me for this rotation Pablo Lopez at the top eleven starts three six, one Alcan Tara. Three zero era trevor Rogers Let's see six. Sanchez. His era at three, four, six and seven starts. So these guys are the surprise of the National League and depending on the matchup and where we from. Here could be fun to watch in that Marlins cub series because the cubbies don't hit and the marlins pitching could surprise some people but we'll get into that much more in segment number three like I talked about a bit earlier the Cincinnati reds are the final wildcard team the first wildcard team I should say number seven, they were thirty one and twenty nine but are these seven seed because the number two place. Teams finished three through six, and then to wild guard spots the reds at thirty one and twenty nine, they won three or four down the stretch. This was my surprise team in the National League. They've finally showed up in the month of September. They were making me sound quite foolish there for a bit in the month of August, but Julie put it together in September had themselves a run down the stretch and? A hot ballclub coming into the postseason and with that rotation I'm not sure there's somebody you WANNA face. But offensively, Jesse Winkler in fifty four games to fifty five Shogo Akuyama to forty five and fifty four games. Mike Mus Takas at two thirty I mean, this team hit to twelve. There you go. They were lower than the cubs told you I'd be surprised but Cincinnati, hidden to twelve as a team is somehow in the postseason and that is undoubtedly due to their rotation and it starts with the. Cy Young winner in the national. League. And that's Trevor Bauer who in eleven starts at a one seven, three era this year and you follow him up with Sunny, gray, Luis Castio and Tyler Malay- and you find yourself going up against a solid rotation there. So that reds brave series could also be a lot of fun in the first round and the final wildcard team came down to a three team race came down to the final day of the regular season. The final game each team could make it in different ways and in perfect twenty, twenty fashion in the national, league all. Three teams lost, which meant the Milwaukee brewers got the seed over the San, Francisco giants and the Philadelphia Phillies. So the Milwaukee Brewers, they make the playoffs at twenty, nine and thirty one, they are under five hundred we talked about are we gonNA have a team under five hundred make the playoffs here we are the Milwaukee brewers I don't think they're that good baseball, but they lost three or five down the stretch I was GonNa, say, maybe they're getting hot now they were over the final two weeks ultimately, the cardinals won three of five including the final day the regular season but offense. It has been a struggle Christian Yelich to five. That is such a surprise with twelve home runs twenty two is. In he your hidden to twelve, he's in everyday second baseman Orlando are hidden to sixty I..

"The ace goes for the Reds five and one their own run average. 194 Yes, 55 strikeouts in 41 2 3rd innings And he totes his major league record to the mound tonight 39 consecutive starts without allowing more than six hits in a game. That is an all time major league record that Cardinals tonight counter with the left hander from South Korea. Kwon Young Kim Kwang young Kim is wanna know with a 108 earned run average two Saturdays ago, pitched six innings of shutout three hit baseball against The Cincinnati Reds. I have a sobering number for you. A reality check. I like numbers. I like stats. I like tracking what the Reds do. Month to month. The Reds just wrapped up August with a losing month of baseball. They went 13 and 15 for the month. Since the end of 2013. The end of 2013 last playoff appearance, the Reds have played 37 4 months of baseball. They have produced a winning month. Six times in that span. The Reds monthly record since the end of 2013. ISS six winning months. 30 losing months and one 500 month. A little bit more context that if you go back to the 2013 season They had five winning months that year. Remember they made the playoffs wildcard faded late third place, but they had five winning months in 2013. They have produced a total of six winning months in the six plus years. Since And yet the talking point from this organization from top Down continues to be. We believe in our guys. I think it's a fair question to wonder when the talking point turns to this is not acceptable. Reds and Cardinals Tonight We have big sticks and a big legs.
