Turkey was concerned that it hadn't been given essentially enough recognition for its efforts to join the EU. Sweden says essentially they'll put in a good word so this apparently was averted because of opportunities that both sides seem to understand were available. Reporting live, JJ Green, WTOP News. JJ President Biden is in Lithuania for that NATO summit. He has a couple of high -profile meetings on the agenda, one of them with Ukrainian President Zelensky. So what is on the agenda there? Well this is the thing that really has to happen above all things I think if the president's having meetings. I know that he's going to meet with Erdogan as well. eating But with Zelensky is something that absolutely has to happen for him any time that they can, especially because all of these NATO meetings are about Ukraine. There are new developments every day, in fact many developments hour or every two. So he gets a first -hand conversation in person with Zelensky to figure out what's going on, how these weapons were sending you working out, what about the support you're getting from the rest of the countries, and what about this situation in Russia. So he gets this first -hand face -to -face opportunity that bodes well for both of them. The other part of the reason why this is important is this is in Lithuania. Lithuania is one of those countries that's concerned about what's going on with Belarus. Belarus is certainly in league with Russia and the Wagner mercenary group, so anything that he has in terms of Zelensky having intelligence, the president gets to hear first -hand face -to -face. "That it was time to come together. A cart's researched original drawings from the 1880s and discovered Atkinson's edits. He repainted the union soldiers back in command of the captured confederates, in return to the captured confederate flag. And just like that, the north won the battle of Atlanta. Again, kurz's work also included creating plaster figurines, like the ones that would have originally been displayed with the work at ground level. I bring this up because when the film Gone with the Wind premiered at Atlanta, mayor hartsfield took actor Clark Gable on a tour of the cyclorama. And soon after, at Gable's request, there was a diorama figurine of his character, a dying rat butler, added to the scene at the base of the painting anyway. In 2014, the Atlanta history center undertook another monumental restoration effort to bring the painting back to display. Before the article this episode is based on, has deaf work spoke with Gordon Jones, the senior military historian and curator at the Atlanta history center. He said, you've got this wonderful artifact with this wonderful, rich, deep history that can tell you a whole lot about the nation's history and Atlantis history and the history of race, and those stories are not being told. Let's treat it as an artifact and learn from it. We don't have to make up stuff. Let's be honest and tell people the truth. That's what they expect out of a museum. The $35 million restoration campaign included, moving the painting from grant park to its own specially built rotunda at the Atlanta history center. The history center used a multitude of resources to interpret the painting. In the context of the battle itself, the Civil War as a whole. The role of slavery within it. The reconstruction era and how the country was divided. Today, the battle of Atlanta is one of only two from that era on display in North America. The other is the battle of Gettysburg, located in Pennsylvania. But the value of the battle of Atlanta cyclorama goes well beyond money and it's pull on crowds. The real value may be a lesson in how Americans can interpret and freestyle with facts. To satisfy their own view of the world. "So it's a master bullshitter. It's a consummate bullshit. Yeah. It's kind of fantastic. One of the things that Microsoft was criticized for last week is that the new AI powered Bing was analyzing earnings reports and actually produced incorrect numbers for brands like Lululemon and the gap. How concerned should people be about the amount of misinformation that's being spit out in these early stages of chatbot search and do researchers anticipate that it will evolve beyond this stage? I think we should be really concerned about it. I think it's kind of amazing that they've rushed this into they being Microsoft rushes into being so quickly. I mean, they saw an opportunity to sort of hit Google. But I think it's a huge problem. You can't have, I mean, it's a real problem if people are thinking that that is accurate, right? That's massive. I think it's unsolved, how you make them speak the truth. But I have seen, I've heard people say that they think it's going to be solved. The architects of some of these language models say they think it will be solved in the next couple of years. I don't know that they know how to do it though, so here's me interesting to watch that. I know that there are ethical considerations in the discussion, right? Particularly bias in the way that the models are trained, the datasets that they use to train the models. And also the fact that you are basically sampling people's work and remixing it and spitting it out without giving credit to the people who did the work. So what guardrails have we seen the companies are implementing this technology in their search, put up in order to prevent these things from becoming a bigger problem. Right, they've definitely put a bunch of guardrails in terms of trying to reduce problems like bias or hateful language. They put effort into that. And but it's really insidious, it's difficult sometimes to even spot that. Bias isn't in the language people use or the way visual representations of images on the web have certain biases. When it comes to copyright copyrighted works, I don't think they've I don't know what they've done. It seems like they just scraped everything and go behind the paywall and take everybody's artwork and remix it. And to me, that's I do sympathize a lot with the artists. Maybe because I'm a writer, but I also just, it just feels like they're kind of laundering copyright to some degree when they can produce these artworks, which very clearly you can see echoes of people's stuff in it. I don't know that it is just an untested sort of legal question whether you can just, it doesn't, because you trained on that doesn't mean you're reproducing the copyright. I guess it doesn't, but it seems an ethical conundrum to me. On that note, I'm a person who writes and edits product reviews on the web. And I noticed during the Bing presentation last week, one of the things they showed was a demo where the person giving the demonstration typed into the chat GPT enabled Bing, what's the best vacuum cleaner? And it went and looked at all of these product reviews on the web and then made suggestions based on what it found on the web for product reviews. And I can see a future one or two steps away from that where the person can then purchase the vacuum cleaner without ever having read any of the reviews that were scraped in order to present them with that information. And I want to know who gets the affiliate revenue. That's a great question. Yeah, I mean, at some point, this whole model breaks down, right? If the people writing the reviews don't get any revenue, that's not going to be anything to feed into the AI models. I think it's a real one of the problems for Google is that this kind of breaks down their traditional search business, right? It doesn't have the same. If your synthesizing a bunch of websites into a succinct answer, you're not directing people through advertising or through you're not directing people to websites and you can't serve advertising on the same in the same way. So I think it's a real conundrum to them. I do wonder whether some of this is just Microsoft messing with Google rather than actually really thinking this is going to revolutionize search necessarily. Yeah. Well, it's comforting either way. Mike, I think what you're looking at is how long before these chat bot powered search engines take our jobs. "This is Bloomberg law with June grosso from Bloomberg radio. I could say anti semitic things in Adidas can't drop me. Now what? Now what? But Adidas did just that, dropping Ye the volatile wrapper formerly known as Kanye West in the wake of his barrage of anti semitic remarks. The break above the almost decade long collaboration will cost Adidas a nearly $250 million hit to its earnings this year. But it will cost yay even more, reportedly one and a half $1 billion, and his billionaire status. It also creates a morass over how intellectual property rights in their multi-billion dollar collaboration are split and whether there's a path forward that avoids a court fight. My guest is attorney Zach kurz, who founded the law firm sneakers and streetwear legal services. Zack so about two weeks ago, Ye said that Adidas can't drop him. Do you think there's something in his contract that he thought would protect him? I mean, I think that's just Kanye being Kanye. I think it was almost the opposite. I think there was something in the contract that a statement like that could hurt him, whether it's morals, non disparagement, but I think it was also a challenge to Adidas when he said that as well as his additional context and comments in one of the videos. I'm sure there is something in the contract that he can stand behind, but I think that was really Kanye just being Kanye thinking that he was invincible. Explain what a morals clause is. A basic morals clause. So in the contract though, have language that says, if this influencer or this collaborator or a partner, whether it's they say something or they do something or they get charged with a crime, they're all different types of Morris clauses, but essentially it's just language that says if you make our company look bad or bring disdain on our company, we have the ability to terminate this contract. And without seeing the a's contract, we don't know how broad or what specifically the mortal clause stated. But we know that that's sort of what the exercise here, whether it's the morals or a non disparagement clause In your opinion, as a brand, was this the right thing for Adidas to do, knowing the amount of money they're going to lose on this? In my opinion, yet. I mean, from a financial standpoint, yeah, but it's bigger than that. And I think by waiting and doing what Adidas did, the loss of a lot of people that were supporting their brand. Kanye has said in the past, he's tweeted about Adidas. It's going to cost you billions to keep me. It's going to cost you billions to let me go. Could he sue Adidas for breach of contract? Chance your question, you know, yes. A good lawyer could always find an argument. But I don't think it would be a great argument here based on the actions in the situation that they actually terminated Kanye for. Again, we don't see the contract, so we don't know the specific language, but I'm pretty sure there's a moral clause in it. And I'm sure Adidas had the right to do that based on the situation here

Anheuser-Busch vs Coors Brewing Company at Augusta National
"That reminds me of a story from Augusta national, actually. When I was playing a practice round there, it was how quiet it is. There are SK what normally. And I was there in March, the month prior for my last trip there before the masters. And you have to be with a member if you're bringing anyone to play. Jeff Knox came out and just the token Augusta national member. And we were talking and he was telling me some stories about that place. He was telling me who was on site that day. And apparently the guy that owns Anheuser Busch is a member there and Peter kurz, the guy that owns Coors brewing, they're obviously competitors, but they're both members at Augusta and they were the guy that owns Anheuser Busch was there that day. And Peter kurz had gotten wind that the guy that owns Anheuser Busch was going to be on site that day. So he called the day prior. You know where I'm going with this. He called the day prior and bought all of the Coors light on the property. All of the coolest products. He spent like $30,000 and bought all of their products and had them shipped off. So when Peter corris got there the next day to play golf at Augusta national, there was no course products. He had to drink Bud Light or Budweiser or an Anheuser Busch product. That's the kind of shit that doesn't happen anywhere else in the country. But like a little snicker ha ha, I made him drink my beer. That happens all the time at Augusta national. There's little bitty things where they run their, it's like their own government inside those gates. They have no rules except for what they want to do. It doesn't even feel like they have anyone over them. They are the rules in Augusta,

For his takeaways from the testimony I talked to early Facebook investor roger mcnamee Cofounder of elevation partners and author of zucked waking up to the Facebook catastrophe Roger told me that Francis haugen had an extraordinary amount of access in her role at Facebook She was absolutely at the center civic integrity was responsible for addressing harms to users So she was in exactly the right place She's just Was to make young girls look better than they really are And through that process to by making the look better the effectively create a whole culture of envy And that is the business model And there's nothing you can do to change that It's been there from the David and scream was created and it is a threat to the psychological well-being of an entire generation of young women and the key thing to understand is this is not a business model that exists only at Facebook It exists in various forms at Google at Amazon at Microsoft And it's now being adopted throughout the economy How much of this is because of the algorithms and the way they're designed A 100% of it is The way to think about this is that this is we're dealing with a business model based on attention and the best way to get people's attention is either the scare the more outrage So roger it really raises in my mind the question is this a bug or a fix I mean could they fix this without really substantially undermining their business model No No no You can't You can still have Facebook and Instagram But you can't have them at their current profit levels because profit maximization is what essentially leads to all the harms What can be done by Congress or by creation of an agency you mentioned before perhaps an agency I think we already have enough information to design We need three classes of things We need to think about safety and there I think something that looks like the FDA that simply looks at every technology product On a regular basis not just once but continuously to Austria's Kurz, Greens agree on new coalition government
"The new year and a new government in Austria after months of negotiations the center right party led by chancellor suggesting cuts the secured a coalition agreement with the greens are affecting the mind of pauses resurgence of the polls the unlikely alliance brings the greens into government for the first time Mr kat signal ridge the need for compromise physically Gilles Simon and so it is possible to reduce the tax burden and at the same time bring in ecological principles and it is possible to protect the climate and the borders the more I spoke to a Vienna correspondence Bethany bell who says this is a big win for the greens in the last parliament they didn't even make it into parliament to told they did much better in the last election but it also is quite significant in it mocks the swing to the left is the best feeling Kutz because you may remember his loss coalition was with the far right Freedom policy says it's quite a big change for him his policy may see this as a way of trying to soften his image off to that coalition with the far right because the far right Freedom Party was attracting an enormous level of support in Austria does this reflect the change in the country well the Los government fellow pops in may because of the corruption scandal involving the former head of the far right Hines Christian stuff because of that support for the Freedom Party fell quite considerably and they didn't do that well in the last election so presumably some compromises will be needed to make government work what's that going to mean in terms of policy the big issue I think that's a loss of analysts say will be difficult for the two policies is the question of immigration that was something he shed a lot in common with the far right he wants you to stop immigration of protects Austria's board is the left wing greens a fall more proof Mike Renfro refugee and it will I think that will be quite to love Shiv and they really and many of the supporters of the green opposes what Mr could stayed with immigration at that they saw that the house is a tradeoff between you know trying to get that green policies implemented and to sort of try and actually shape policy instead of being in a position so it might not be the trade the greens become more restrictive on immigration in return for their ambition of foster becoming a leading nation fighting climate change vas is certainly what they hope we don't know what details have been exactly agreed when it comes to the green policies we had from the leader of the green saying that they'd agreed mole on climate change and they could have imagined beforehand and that he wants all street to become an international leader on climate change issues we we will get more detail on that to in the coming days via correspondence

Monocle 24: The Briefing
Party of ex-Chancellor Kurz wins Austrian election
"Welcome to the briefing we begin by turning our attention to Austria where former Chancellor Sebastian Courts as won a general election and in convincing fashion snap election was called following the collapse of the previous government made up of the People's Party of Mister Courts and the far-right Freedom Party hardy video had revealed the Freedom Party's openness to Russian influence. Peddling courts will now have to choose between shifting left or going back to his former allies in the far right party to form a new government for more on this. I'm joined by tests should covets. UK Correspondent for Austria Profile magazine Tessa. Thank you for joining us and and welcome back to the show Were you surprised at all. I don't buy this results. I think everyone was surprised because the opinion polls before forty elections showed a better resort for prognosis for the far-right what happened I think in the last weeks before the elections was that the far-right Freedom Parthiv got involved. There were some revelations about expense scandals around the leadership and former former head of the party has gone and that further dampen their the the results so a combination of the bitter video scandal from May with these new revelations just kicked him off the chances to return to government as the logical partner that for Christian for Sebastian quote what's so we will see now in long probably difficult coalition negotiations if he indeed will to the Green Party as coalition nations partner. I want to come back to that expensive scandal you mentioned but you are right. The Green Party did surge which is quite curious here sort of square in the middle the People's Party the Conservative Party is the Social Democrats as well which is quite curious. The Conservative Party gained a lot of ground far right lost ground obviously because of of that scandal but with the performance of the Greens does that put into question where the former chancellor is going to look for a new partner in in his coalition while he's definitely the successful populist he managed to gain votes though his previous coalition was failed completely in renewing Australia sort of fear contract with the people in the future so they just had to resign after eighteen months and still he comes out as the one who is the staple prime minister that people trust again to form another government so that's the first thing so the second thing is that the Zeitgeist has changed a little bit in the last two years so the last elections refund on a tough immigration stands after the refugee crisis resulted in strong anxieties in the population this time we're sort of in the middle of Friday's for future a frenzy people thinking about the climate catastrophe more than about the the consequences of immigration could try to push the immigration a topic in all conversations or interviews during during the election campaign but in fact the resides in the success of the green pod shows that the younger voters want something else than the constant immigration debate so they turn to the Green Party and a lot of people in the middle of the society also thought that they wanted some kind of the more open minded and more progressive stance on questions like immigration European Union and end climate and those people voted either green or for this small Liberal Party which was also quite successful. Do we have any indication of which way ah the former chancellor is leaning here for his Coalition Party as he say sort of it is a popular thing now more people are thinking about the climate obviously climate change rather more people voted voted green so he's quite young guy as well not only in age but in his political experience so may he be more curious to to shift left in in building and continuing to grow on his popularity he might and this is a big test now for him as a politician because he was very quickly quickly turning to become one of these right wing populace strongmen tough on immigration and constantly talking about political Islam. I am in how to sort of restrictor these influences in Australian in his Austrian homeland and artists sixty. You know the rhetoric from other other right wing politicians in Europe to now. He has the chance to move back to the middle and do a coalition with the Green Party ideologically. Lee I think this will be quite difficult for him because he has always said that he felt comfortable in the coalition with defy red because they shared a lot of his reform plans and also this anti immigration stance now we will see what he will do and it will be a a very big test also for the Green party because they are much more progressive much more welcoming to immigration much more open minded and in then Sebastian could so for them to go into coalition is quite dangerous too but it's now the moment where Australia has decided and where the Green Party ends passive quits mainly mainly those two have to decide if they want to prevent the fire to come back from into government or not and we will probably see this by the end of the year beginning of next year only the results so the next week will be quite interesting Tessa. Thank you so much for this just fits their

He tried to distance himself from this a little bit, and tried to portray himself as having been sort of transformed, but that infect was not completely true and could took one and a half years. Now to say that this is really enough. And he didn't do this. I mean this video just showed too much of the moon face of his coalition partners. You don't have to take very far to understand that Russian money per meets European politics in a really big way. Loads of Russian money makes its way into European parties through think tanks through various kind of campaign. Pledges. There is a huge problem post himself as somebody who suffered who week demised himself for the nation for the country. But this is sorry to say nonsense, because it was him who built this collision, it was also him who would have had so many possibilities and options to say something nobody told him to suffer. You're listening to the foreign desk with me, Andrew Miller on today's show. We'll take a detailed look at the scandal, which has both up ended and bewildered. Australian politics and ask, if there is a lesson here for voters elsewhere, in Europe, considering supporting populist outsiders, like, for example, don't but I currently of Monaco's correspondent in Vienna outlines what has become known as I beat the gate. It's hard to convey to the outside world, the extent to which the scandal has gripped the Australian imagination everyone who was talking about it in every cafe in every home up enough to guess drinking video was, he comes Alexandrian, a quarter of the population watch that historic speech by chancellor Sebastian courts last Saturday. The one where he said that enough was enough skin. Skin is and that was in the same night as Eurovision and in the spirit of vision. The scandal has given a new lease of life to this nine thousand nine hundred nine hit song by the she adults group, Bengals gets cold. We're going to be, so it's at the top of the charts in Australia. Why? Well. Because of course it was on that Spanish on that the secret video was recorded. Seriously, though, the video came as a complete bombshell, but the fact that it was the Freedom Party, the FBI mass down. So spectacularly was actually not that surprising until compared to if the social Democrats and the conservatives have long very long tradition on their values on their ideology on their programmatic basis, and this is quite different to f f is a party that opposes and not creates. And this is one answer why they always fail by themselves, did Luke was a spokesperson for the former conservative chancellor, Vulcan Schuessel, who also led a coalition government with the F the in the early two thousands. She was that, when that government collapsed would say their challenge is not being. A responsible party who governs? It's more being a party of the opposition. And this is a different role and blow up. It was their own failure. It was not the failure by others. Nobody would think about having another if a if a coalition for the next future. So I think they really knocked out themselves. Is in trouble then. So is the of a pay the conservatives, but things could go either way for them. It all depends on whether their leader chancellor courts survives the no confidence vote on Monday courses being under five using the fat his own ends, and Fulmer coalition with the F the fest place. His public statements have the past week. Have also come in for some criticism. He post himself as somebody who, who suffered two week demise himself for the nation for the country. But this is I'm sorry to say nonsense, because it was him who built this nation it was him. Baba taught is reporter working for the Viennese weekly defaulter, the only Australian publication that was given access to this talk video before it was released. She's written a biography of court since she's been watching his behavior in the public's reaction stood closely Ostrom people. They're beginning to scrutinize in to deconstruct would he's doing because. It's, it's easy now to see. I'm the anchor and I will guarantee stability, but people are beginning to ask, who's he takes responsibility for this crisis, and that's him. So it's going to be not so easy for him to have the same run during the election. Like trees Sebastian codes loses the no confidence vote on Monday. He'll remain the most popular politician in the country. But what does all this mean for the? All the all fall ride going to slip from political infamy into political obscurity. Alost word from baba told no Mike, my answer would be no. Because we believe experienced the end of the F in the beginning of two thousand to two thousand three some thought, it's the end in the one thousand nine hundred eighty s so I would be very careful to say. It's the end let's, let's remember, do not Trump during his campaign when this recording. When pop Nick, where he talked about what he does with women, and everybody was shock. Then everybody thought this is going to be the end of Donald Trump. And he was he was elected. Similar to this. I think it can even help to mobilize Motus, who will see the effects, the something.
