"What what it means to listen to somebody. I mean to me. I always thought what. I enjoy myself than though is vonda obama. I wanna i wanna make sure that. I'm what i'm saying. Is interesting informative and on point with with me as as as a viewer so you try to put yourself in the viewers position. What does he need to know. What does he. What does he have to know. What's fun to know what's different. Try to kind of flip the very little bit to think of yourself as a listener as well as a communicator. Right and then talk about things that you know again normally Or plainly i guess would be the way to put it in you know madden. You had a seat next to him. Hearing the way that he would communicate. You know the the thing that will always live with me isn't from his game but from his pro football fame speech about the busts talking to each other. It's just it was such a fan thing to say like you know and you know. Do they talk. And what do they talk about when the lights go out and then one of the last lines he said it's like you know and i'm going to be having one of those busts in there talking forever and ever talking about whatever and that was like almost poetry you know and you know what i mean. That's yeah i miss. I miss that guy. But obviously you and ray. He's he's one of the scorers people ever mean. Look at john. He's got a larger than life and he's scuttled the sound affection the boom and the whole thing at but people don't understand this is a man who knows a lot about a lot and am i seven years with john. I mean we had some great great times and most of them dealt with like dinners or discussions. We had about things other than football. We spent enough time on. We got it. We knew it and we're doing a game. You know every week. But john could discuss. Anything is a very curious man very and of course going around the country. That's what i always wanted to do. He he loved stopping in the coffee shop in goodland. Kansas another people. And that's that's i think part of the reason that john was able to connect as a communicator. With like every demographic in a report at the country well gonna finish up with you. The way i'm planning to finish up with all the other interviews for for this ten part series of just getting started on. Nfl voices in broadcasters. And it's the best piece of advice he received in your career. What what was it. From whom would you say. Well i would say it. It's kind of a little odd in a way. But i'll never forget. I loved kurt gowdy as a broadcaster luck and i got to do the nineteen seventy two world series with him when i was doing the cincinnati. Regine and we won the pennant. And i actually had met kurt when i was in college and he was doing the red sox i played a tape. Forum is training so he knew about me. Now we're doing the world series together..

"Writers and someone ought to do an article about baseball on radio and the blind. No one has done it. That no and i think it would be a really interesting article and i'd be willing to help interested donna. The air about that. I'm glad you mentioned about radio for the blind. And how it's important for the announcers to paint the picture as you said earlier of what's going on during the games just have one more thought there when i started to say. Was that this big long article on saber. It talked about everything about the anniversary. And what it meant. Yada yada didn't mention blind people wants. Okay i thought that was truly bizarre. I mentioned it in the comments. And that's why. I suggested that navy we ought to kind elevate this little bish often. I started to talk about before we were taping and several other people were participating as well the importance of describing the game. Radio announcers became very adept at painting a picture with words. Making you feel like you were there by using words. I think it is awful. That a lot of stations today. Simulcast radio and television. Because it's not the same thing and the radio announcers who are going on television understand that they still describe stuff they still make. You feel like you're their television folks. The ones that have done nothing but television. They do a very different game. And i really have spoken out against simulcasting just for that reason because those descriptions are so important in understanding baseball. I was lucky. I grew up in boston in the fifties with kurt gowdy and bog murphy on the radio. Why does that matter. I was female and there was no one around that expected that i would understand baseball and yet thanks. Kurt gowdy in bog murphy. I learned about baseball. And i became a big fan. Because of those announcers they are so important. And i cannot say enough how much matters to people to have good radio broadcasts of the games you know what your comments remind me of a little bit of topic but back in w years ago as washing the super bowl on television television with a bunch of cited people and i hate washing the super bowl and television because because play-by-play i found very interesting where the commercials and the super bowl is in part about commercials. So you would you. Would you know here. A lot of music loud noise and sowed effects and occasional voiceover. And i would ask the sighted people in the room okay. What was always a commercial for. What was the product if that was commercial designed to for market and more often than not they would say i have no idea. These were sighted people and and and the basic response is. Why should we care. Well if i'm erceg. Try to sell. Something and cited people are saying. Why should i care after spending a million dollars on a commercial. There's something wrong was really one of the more startling experiences of my sort of tv watching. So what does he expect the reaction of the public to be then. well all sort of unusual thing donna. You may be able to see him worse than i can. But i think the super bowl is everybody show off right. It's the commercials at people who are trying to show off their brilliance..

This is mostly an audio effort here like this but everyone knows the way that is moist traveled while he did bet really painted a vivid picture. Did thank you mike. I'm jealous about what. Billy i wish i could do that. I wish i could do any of that. I can't. I can't sleep on a plane. Sometimes i lift my feet off the ground the plane just because i feel like the you know the vibrations of just flying in this. This makes me uncomfortable. I'm not a good flier. I wish i could just fall asleep while i could sleep on the wing of a plane. Really yeah i really could. While it's in flight. I don't mean on the joe. These dangers reruns with these jokes. And it's just it's very frustrating night. Everybody waitresses it's eleven thirty seven. Am he said actually before flakes. We actually had some flake troubles on the way to tahoe. So on our connecting flight we actually ended up in a middle seat going from our connecting flight to tahoe and he had said previously that he'd sit on the wing of the plane before. Sit in the middle seat. But that didn't happen. did you offer. I'd rather i mean the the middle seat is the war. St were so my gosh. I think people would take their shoes. I just wanted to say even though you know. It's the wheels coming down or going up. Does that you get nervous every single time. Stand that noise it haunts me. Greg do you sleep every flight. Because i feel like if you sleep the way that you described just for your head straight down. The middle seat should be reserved for sleepers right because the window seat is a waste if it's used by someone who sleeping in the aisle seat. You're kind of a burden if you're sleeping in the aisle so the middle seat is kind of like crime sleeping real estate. I would think. I love sleeping during a flight. I just do it you know. The alternative is to stay awake and be terrified so when i fall asleep in the ultimate relaxed state. You know it's like falling asleep saturday. Well chris schinkel Described bowling on. "In south Florida. There was nothing before arrived and owes its foundation to what Shula built with the Dolphins Fan. Because I mean you know. We talked about the only undefeated team history of the NFL but The dolphins were competitive for decades. You know He went to the Super Bowl with David. Woodley quarterback Tolleson store yesterday and even the great teams of Marino didn't have a lot around him. A by the way are by the way Tommy and I don't think I mentioned this yesterday. I mentioned this morning because last night I was watching everything on Shula. I always my number one number one. I just always thought the dolphins were so well coached as a football fan. Bellichik wavered in in waffled a little bit here in recent years because Bella chick is so good But Shula was always you know a prior to this incredible last decade of Belichick was. Oh always my number one but you know What redskin fans longtime redskin fans may know but for those that? Don't Bobby Beth. `Red was the architect of those early dolphins teams. He was the general manager. And I don't even know if he had the GM title but he was the top personnel guy in those dolphin organizations in last night after watching one of the NFL network shows on. Shulan may have been his football life show. I went to youtube bees up seen this before but not in a long time and super bowl seven as it was broadcast by NBC. The whole game is on Youtube. The you know Kurt Gowdy AL D. Regardless on the call and the NBC booth you know in the La Coliseum. It's the undefeated dolphins of the AFC which by the way Doughty talks about. You know the there's still this rivalry this AFL NFL rivalry the AFL still has an inferiority complex about the NFL teams. Even though at that point remember not only the jets but the chiefs had won a super bowl over the vikings as well in suitable for and then ironically the colts who became an AF L. team earn AFC team after the merger. They beat the cowboys in Super Bowl. Five but anyway Bobby Beth `red is there right there on the sidelines standing next to Shula during the game and I in some of the other highlights last night I was watching. Shula's teams in the seventies. You see on the sideline during these games. You know you you don't see. Gm's on the sidelines today. You know they're watching you know. That's not their responsibility. But it was a big part of the dolphins success in the seventies. He was there he got there. And seventy one I think and left in seventy eight to come to Washington And where he was the architect obviously of M- of Many more Super Bowl appearances in super bowl level teams. Think about that. And then he went on to San Diego and got the chargers to their for super bowl. Ever but those dolphins teams of the seventies were talented. You Know Offense Hall of Famers Greasy Little Warfield czanka defensively. They were always so good. The no name defense seventy two and they were a dominant team in. They went to three straight super bowls. Lost that first one to the cowboys and then beat the redskins and then crush the vikings in super bowl eight and then the following year. You know they were twelve and two again after going fourteen in. Oh and they lost that famous hands game the stabler throat. A Clarence Davis on to beat the Dolphins in Oakland in one of the most memorable. Nfl Games of all time in that stopped the dolphins three year run of AFC championships but man they were so good but to your point those teams in the eighties. They had no business. You know winning as many games as they won no other than Marino. Yeah I absolutely he. He was a great coach. Who I let me tell you a I'm GonNa tell you a story Not Related to me. It's related to a guy. I know who covered sure was very straight-laced When he was on a road he kept the Bible his bedside. Not The one that.

That's the skin Amax late at night like nine o'clock on a Saturday. That's a I'm gonna go with one hundred percent on Alan weren't those the best. I mean, this is way before browsers and porn hub young people. This is way before it was free kids. Well, of course, some of them to be honest with you bow. Now, man, you have right for the goodies. We're getting a bunch of text messages four one five hundred can't be as far as reality shows that they're into and I will say this. I will say this is what I do watch this does count as reality show. So I should retract my previous statement saying that I don't watch any of them. But all those fishing shows that you see I'm into hard. Now. Don't let me laughing like wicked tuna that I got from four and five or reminded me. Yes. Wicked tuna battle fish deadliest catch. I love all those. I love I love fishing is one of my favorite things to do in the world, the Orlando Wilson fishing show on early Saturday morning. So we need stay up all Friday night. Nothing was going right for you. My dad was telling me about a didn't Kurt gowdy used to do a show and outdoor show. Yeah. I want. I want to see the American sportsman. Yeah. My dad was obsessed. He loved Kirk outings, the man, he said, Kurt gowdy, man. I obviously it was before my time. But at the hearing the clips about him, he's brilliant gowdy would do interviews, and they would show them every once in a while by any show in New York, and he'd sit there and interview Joe Nemeth guys like that. And I mean, it was just cur Gaddi was demand. Yeah. Man. I love those fishing shows though. Those are awesome. Those outdoor shows. I can I can dig that. I like cooking shows up the UFC reality shows anything where you're a fighting reality show. It's like, okay. You guys fighting the winner gets a contract. Yeah. That's straight. Those are those are cool reality shows though, because I like to see how that business works. That's fascinating to me like deadliest catch on those guys go out there in the Bering Sea. And they're out there for weeks at a time to coming back making huge cash with those crafts. That's awesome. I like reading about that. I mean, you ever do you think you could ever do that in a million years? Now, I went out on a man enough for that. I went out in the Monterey ban and fishing boat. You're scared ESL is weren't you? Yeah. And I mean, I was in the navy on a big ship between a big ship and a fishing boat or night and day. And God bless those people that go out there and those fishing boats. I've so I was out in we were deep sea fishing off of Kona. This is in September. We're going Marlin fishing and just being on the bow out there in the middle of this deep blue, and it was beautiful, of course. But I was thinking about those how plus it's freezing cold. And if you fall, it's a wrap. You fall. It's a wrap. If that water, how big do you think the stack of playboys on this age, these fishing boats is pretty what's the internet? Huge an libraries internet connection on in the middle of the ocean. Not very good. At those guys are just all pent up like where wolves by the time. They get back detabe awful. Don't be the guy that loses the stack did you pack that stack. Jacob you didn't greenhorn the call the newbies greenhorns tossed overboard for that might we lost one today. Jacob. He was unbelievable fisherman. He was greenhorn learning. But he forgot to bring the porn. I was resting at the bottom of the Bering Sea from the American pickers. What's that show? They go around to these antique places like out in the country. Where guys got a like a nineteen thirteen motorcycle in a barn. So it's a show about buying antiques shopping there in the midwest couple of guys out of Iowa some people are into that though, aren't they? I guess I must watch it. If I know what damn shows about MRs into that. I must know something about okay? You know, what the ones I can't stand now. And this is probably why divorce my wife was she watched HD HGTV daily the property brothers show. And then the nauseating couple from Texas who redo houses, a chip and Joanna Gaines is that who this chip and Joanna. Yeah. That's it Naasi people from Texas. Just limited by well. Every time I counted dunk my head and a fish tank every time that came I can stand seeing the side of those two shows age TV what a terrible network, you got rid of spike for HGTV. We have to watch that still trash it is. It is did you ever watch on MTV? They had fully be down where they'd get brownie. And and they put him in a ring guy. When I remember the title of they'd have like if you wanted to date this really hot chick her mom would go in your room in like go, see what you were all about. And you'd have to late hang out. Okay. The hang out the mom or the dad beforehand, and you'd have to make it, you know, through the challenges, they hoop stage you. Speaking of crappy TV shows back in the pimp, my ride with exhibit is that a reality show. You think? Hires? Yo MTV rate dude, he is way better back in the day than it is. Now our talking about stupid bachelor. Where's my right bring exhibit back and bring pit my ride two thousand nineteen about pinch my bachelor, okay tournament turn this guy out from this. I mean as good as Jacob. Oh, Vesey from the. Shit was older. He just y. I mean, it's great argument, but Jason Kidd this is Jason kitty had his own shoot. I never seen. Shoe, but kid out his has to be trophies. So he doesn't need a shoe. If you have a mean listen, I like that. If you have the j. kids shoes. Jay, you're the better player. If you had your own shoot, he's the culture. I get it. It was a coal, Tom kids. Listen, watch. Please tell me Jason Kidd is not the better player you honestly tell me that. Well, this all around game. Okay. So there's two ways. Look at it. You can say, just interact Hume, which one's better or which one would you rather have on your team? Because there are four other guys on your team and I can get for other guys to help make up for the few things that Steve Nash lacking. But I cannot get four guys. From what he can do. They both fit, then here's why Jason Kidd at the point Garsten six, four with the switching defenses now you you put them in pick a role. He switches to the broad in the finals. Late game. You want kid or Nash doing that. You see how LeBron ham, expose curry guys. Yeah, that's fine. But now and then on the office of in he spotting up knocking down threes and that he's not coming pick and rolls, knocking them down like Nash, but he's knocking them down so you can't even moping. So he's he, he fits today's mold, and the way the game is played more so than Steve Nash because his ability to the fin multiple positions. Well, I mean, really. We'll be discussing with a little more later. I do wanna get to the fact that Luke Walton and Klay Thompson spent some time in cutter recently with of course, our trade Tracy McGrady mellow should clay be atop the Lakers wished list next summer. The moments he captured the moments he, he missed. It does happen. The injury sustained because sitting there on the baseline can be a perilous thing, and we didn't get too much into the technical aspect of the photography. We touch on it a little bit. Rick was on his way to his hotel, Wanda needed to take the trolley to the train to the two buses that would take her home. I said, my goal was to be a sports writer, and I remember him actually stopping walking, and I think it was because he knew I was going to get on the train. If we kept walk. Talking and he wanted to make sure that he got his. He wanted to make sure I got the point that's when Rick Ryecart center fielder for the California Angels told Wanda Fisher sixteen year old from Weymouth, Massachusetts, something that would change the course of her life. You know, you seem like a really nice girl. He said, you know, the guys really don't want women in the locker room or the clubhouse, and they're going to give you hard time. I don't want to say, don't do it. I'm just telling you that this is what you're going to be up against an I thanked him and he went to Kenmore hotel or the vault play state. And I went down into the subway to get on the trolley on the long ride home, Wanda thought about what Reich heart had said. She decided to follow his advice and not pursue a career in sports writing.
