"How does an iPhone behave when it sold in a Chinese market? How does a galaxy behave when it sold in a Chinese market? Do Samsung and Apple comply with local regulations Apple doesn't typically put on a lot of bloat. They won't let companies just pre install a bunch of software on their phones, but how does it handle? Consumer privacy, consumer data. What about a Samsung device? Do Chinese imaged galaxy phones perform the same as realme when it comes to handling Chinese citizen data. And that's the next step. That's like, so now that we have this data from this study, which has done an incredible job of detailing how this information is being parsed and sent and they've got little buckets to contain and what apps might be problematic, that's awesome. But if we're going to get out of the xenophobia of Chinese phone bad because China steal your data, we also need to see our other manufacturers doing the same thing. We need to see Samsung playing a similar game because they're also looking at the financial incentive of having these apps and services, there's a monetary value applied to all of this. When one of the major permissions that can be somewhat dangerous from a threat or a risk assessment of something like WeChat, does it matter if WeChat is on a one plus or if we chat is on a galaxy or if WeChat is on an iPhone. I don't know that there is a tangible difference if the service is the one that is responsible for some of these concerning elements. So I just want to get to the conclusion here the conclusion is really short because you know what? Let me screen share again because there's a lot of information and there's a lot of data in this study. I would recommend paging through some of it because they do have listed like these are some of the APKs that are pre installed and are granted permissions when you have a Chinese phone sold in China. And that does kind of vibe with some of my experiences where I get certain prompts on my galaxy. I get certain prompts on my Xiaomi 12 S ultra. No, let me reverse that. I got certain prompts on my Xiaomi 12 T that I did not get on my 12 S ultra. And it's always been a consistent thing for me where I don't like how Xiaomi builds some of its price into a model where your behavior does make its way back to Xiaomi servers. For example, I always bring this up as the example of I open up the calculator app on a Xiaomi 12 T and I get a pop up saying, oh, but we're going to track some of your behavior. And you're like, you don't need. There's nothing data intensive or data connection is not going to improve my experience on the calculator ever. You don't need that information. That's not a thing. I feel like that is the disclosure of the terms of service that is demanded by our FTC. So our FTC says you've got to tell the user what's going on. So then if you click okay and you use the Xiaomi calculator, you're sending that information to Xiaomi. I feel we need better consumer educations on some of those business practices, but with the study is talking about is when you take your phone out of the box and you set it up fresh, what apps are automatically given permissions on your device. And that's where there is a fundamental difference between the Chinese OS versions of these phones and the global OS versions of these phones. But scan through this study, I mean, look through some of this. They're talking about what the ethical ramifications of this are, what the threat models are, the setup, how they're conducting this test, where they're trying to create these little analysis pockets where they can see what information is being sent. None of this is a mystery. If you ever encounter a tech article that's like, oh, but what might be happening? Well, there's a way to test it. It's not magic. You can analyze the information that goes into and out of a computer. And you can assess what the threat of that might be. It's better if you have researchers that are security experts that can kind of fine tooth go through logs and system stats so that you know what this is. But it's not an unknown. Especially for tech blogs, they should not be reacting to the headlines of other one plus of stealing your data. Isn't that scary? Because that is absolutely not what the final conclusion of this study is. So, and it wasn't the point of it wasn't the focus of the testing either. The focus was, what do Chinese phones do for the data of Chinese citizens? And how is that different? So they've got breakdowns. Like, look, the Chinese regional models between redmi one plus and realme, they didn't even have a one plus global version in this study. But they're looking at the installed APKs. They're looking at the permissions, they're looking at the different numbers of apps installed. They've got listed some of the more problematic permissions that are pre pre approved, but then you go through and you look at the apps that are installed, Tencent, Dropbox X, Tencent, Tencent, I don't know what Finn shall wallet is. A map Tencent. I think one of these is a WeChat app, but I'm missing the actual APK install. But anyway, you can go through and you can see, hey, on this real me, it had all of these permissions associated with this app and all of these permissions and all of these permissions and all of these permissions. Are you using Tencent wallet? Well, then maybe you should be concerned.

"It's in the study. The study draws the conclusions for people who are shopping Chinese manufactured phones that are being provisioned. That have specific differences in software and being distributed to other regions around the globe, especially a phone that's destined for Europe, where it would have to comply with GDPR and other consumer protection regulations for how the data on that phone is being managed. I brought this up a lot because I play with a couple of imports. I usually try to stick to international flavors of phones. So for example, I have the international flavor of the vivo X 90 pro. I do not have the Chinese only version of the X 90 pro plus. I do have the Chinese version of the Xiaomi 12 S ultra because this phone did not get an international release and I really wanted to play with the one inch camera sensor, but I don't put a lot of my personal data on this phone. I don't log into a lot of accounts. I shoot really fun photos with this and then I send it to other phones that then do the uploading and the sharing and the social media. I don't have the same kinds of concerns using the vivo X 90 pro, because this is a phone that was built for an international market, specifically your European one, actually no, I think this was specifically built for an Indian market. I might have that wrong, but regardless, I have provisioned it as a phone to be operated in the United States. So my data security privacy policy and the terms of service that I agree to are going to be a little different than if this had been a Chinese model phone sold to the Chinese market and then just sent to me here in the United

"And it needs to be punitive enough that they will make less money on doing things like this. So they've gotten money from the federal government. They're going to get a slap on the wrist. We're going to find you a $1 million. That's not what they're doing. I actually don't know what the actual punitive assessment of an oopsie like this might be. Because again, in a very legal sense, you'd have to prove intent and whether or not there was whether they were trying to defraud the government, like we need to be able to read Comcast's mind as an individual entity to see if there was malfeasance. But essentially, what will happen is they've made a ton of money off the government. They've been able to keep funds out of their competitors hands. There is a monetary value to that kind of business practice. And let's say profited them billions. If they don't get a fine for billions, then there's nothing to discourage them from doing something like that in the future. It's just a minor tax that they need to pay on a business practice that will make them way more money. We need to start assessing fines in a way where companies go, hey, you know if we do that, they're going to take so much money from us, we won't make a profit on doing something nefarious. So maybe we should just look at improving our service so that more customers sign up and we make more money. Because that's what we've been promising for like 30 years. We keep just kind of dabbling. You know, there's not really incentive for us to make this better. We just kind of keep telling people it's better, and there's like, yeah, it's cool, whatever. Awful. Yeah, I just want to hit this from the corcoran here down at the bottom. Comcast in AT&T are the two most poopy companies I ever had to interact with besides maybe student lenders or health insurance companies. There's a reason why Comcast is always topping the charts on least satisfied customers because those customers have no option to leave Comcast. It's kind of always the worst. A bunch of people lie. I love it. Oh man, it's so brutal. All right, here, let's get this out of the way here. The second FCC story. Because we were just talking about Comcast. Comcast can't supply broadband to these addresses, but they say they can, misrepresents their service. We have an FCC that is going to reclassify broadband in a way that does not challenge the current speeds offered by broadband providers. Excuse me, high speed. High speed is going to be this love letter to ISPs and carriers. Oh, you only need to be able to supply a 20 megabit upstream. We've been promised fiber since the 80s. We have paid for fiber to home several times over. And at this point, if we can't get a functional upgrade to a faster upstream, we need to be pushing back harder with our regulators and with our elected officials. We're falling further and further and further behind and there are no other options for competition in most of the markets and most of the regions across the United States. Here's what I don't think is going to fix that. I don't think satellite broadband is going to be a solution for our issues on wired and cabled services. I don't even think 5G to home is really going to be much of a fix. As I'm streaming this to you right now, I am currently using the new Verizon 5G to home. It's a good service. It really is. If I didn't want to do business with spectrum, Verizon now has a fixed wireless option that I can use, it uses a 5G tower and it communicates to a little box in my window and it gives me broadband for our home. The Wi-Fi on this little box is kind of useless because we've got to put the box somewhere where it has better line of sight for the tower and that unfortunately is in the worst spot in our home to then send Wi-Fi to other devices in our home. They'd need like a mesh system to line that up better. But I plugged an Ethernet cable into the box. It's going to my main router, which is in a much more accessible spot in our House for every gadget to have broadband. Verizon solution, though, still kind of has to use the same back haul that spectrum is using. At some point, you can put faster and faster connections on towers, but the Internet is still kind of the same. So I've got this box set up, and it's given me about the same numbers as I would get from spectrum, especially the upload speeds. It'll spike as fast as 50 megabits per second. That's two and a half times faster than what I have with spectrum. And then about 9 seconds later, it pops down and just hovers at the exact same upstream connection. So for about 8 seconds, I'm living the suite life. And then it's the same. So right now, what I've done is my router will aggregate, so I've got two Internet connections going into my router for our test drive here. I don't think I'm going to keep both. I don't know if spectrum has angered me enough that I'm going to switch over to fixed wireless. But just for the little test drive that I've got the Verizon box, it's fun. It's fun having two dedicated Internet connections. So that I can almost but not quite double my hilariously bad upstream data connection. It's really, I really don't think it's going to be worth it in the long run. From Maryland, I have the same thing with T mobile, but it waivers too much for me, so I'm taking it back today. And I had to go back to spectrum. I'm probably going to end up in the same boat, Marilyn, because also we're at the whims of whatever the tower usage is going to be. And while spectrums network here is not great. It has sort of proven to be a little bit more reliable than the towers. But I want to put that out there where this is actually going to be really cool for a lot of those areas where you're underserved for things like DSL. Where your broadband options are even more sort of restricted, putting up some 5G towers will probably help a lot of consumers out there. I've been very impressed with what this box can do, but I'm using my home connection in a more professional way. And I kind of need something that's going to, it's going to kind of step up to that higher tier views. Are you saying they still haven't upgraded their infrastructure to data centers to fiber? I thought it was fiber to node in the U.S.. So that's what they say.

"My wife just ban hammered Netflix. Just bodied Netflix in our House. We're gonna go down to one stream at 7 20 for a bit just to see like what lex really watches, that might be it. That might be it. And that's a bummer because I really am a fan of Netflix games. You know what? If I need to play team and T shredder's revenge, I guess I'll just need to play it on my steam deck and not on my phone. This is, this is rough territory for Netflix. So again, I appreciate it if folks hit that video and then what would you do to fix Netflix? Leave a comment on that poster on that video. Some quick housekeeping, I also got to review the sound Pete's opera three. These are true wireless earbuds. This is a brand that really maximizes a bang for buck conversation with Bluetooth earbuds. They're trying to promote a new audio file on a wallet friendly budget kind of kind of product. And this is a turn. The opera three, our earbuds that are packaged a little nicer than some of their other earbuds. So if you want the scoop on some inexpensive but nice earbuds that that was a fun review to put together. And then the biggie, oh, I've gotta scroll down, not up. The biggie was we finally took the wraps off the international embargo for the one plus 11, and I put out 5 videos in one day talking about the one plus 11 where it fits in the lineup, some comparisons with other phones, and some pretty in depth, some of my harder core benchmarking and performance testing. So video rendering, podcast mixing, batch photo processing. This is a pretty remarkable little pocket computer, spoiler. It does things well, and it does things fast. So you can really go into what you care about, their 5 shorter videos. My first draft on making a one plus 11 embargo review because we have had it for a couple of weeks. My first draft on that was over 30 minutes long. The script was ridiculous. So I was like, hey, you know what? Instead of trying to do that and do chapters and do all this stuff. I'm going to carve these up into specific videos. And people can watch what they want, and we'll see how that goes. YouTube is obviously going to tank my production one way or the other. It doesn't matter. I put out a 30 minute video YouTube isn't going to put out that one video. If I put out 5 videos, it's kind of the same. So they're all doing okay, but, you know, I couldn't put Samsung is on notice with the one plus and I already did it once for the earbuds. I'm not going to do every single video. It just straight up clickbait. So flow tech wolf. Taiwan, I'm thinking of switching to either a pixel or a galaxy when my current contract with my phone expires, but I'm nervous about switching to Android since I've always used an iPhone as my phone, any advice. So the ecosystem and infrastructure stuff is usually the most painful. I mean, obviously when you pick up a competing phone, you go from an iPhone to an Android or an Android to an iPhone. All those little things just take time. Familiarity is the biggest issue you'll face because you're used to going here to get this done and now it looks a little different or it feels a little different. In terms of the most straightforward UI, the most straightforward camera experience, having the backing of the software support and the hardware synergy, I lean in a recommendation towards the pixel, but if the reason you're leaving iOS is because you want more features and you want more advanced computing options, then I would definitely lean galaxy because then you got features like decks. If you've been thinking like, hey, it would be really cool if I didn't have to always pack and carry laptops or tablets or all these other things. My phone should be powerful enough to do this. You can't do that on a pixel. So it really depends why you're making the switch. If you're making the switch because you want more novelty, you want a fresher experience that has a lot more bells and whistles and crazy things to play with. I would lean towards the galaxy of those two phones. But if you're just wanting to try out Android with the most accessible version of Android and you're looking for sort of the cleanest transition from iOS to Android, then I would definitely go pixel. I think that's a smaller step. Into the world of Android. But then on top, after that, whichever one you pick, you've just got to get up to speed on Google services, rebuying apps that is kind of a pain, getting all your services kind of plugged in and set up the way that you were used to. All that stuff just takes a little time. People try and do this like, I've had the phone for two days, and it's not as good, and you're like, that's your familiarity that has nothing to do with the quality of either experience. So give it a little time kind of walk into that and know that it just takes a while before you're not fighting the UI because your muscle memory, it has to be reprogrammed too. All right. Oh, yeah, so many people are talking about like, yeah, I've got to cancel my Netflix.

"Full of really thoughtful and considerate geeks that like to really understand what's going on and then sort of knee jerk reactions that a lot of people have to the headlines on tech stories didn't really read the article. So, boy, that was a loaded intro. Hope everybody had a lovely time. This is like one of the biggest holiday seasons of the Americas. Specifically, the United States of America is where yesterday was the Super Bowl. I had no horse in last night's race. It's kind of nice just to see two teams kind of go touchdown for touchdown. It was a pretty high scoring game where the two teams felt decently evenly matched up to whoever had the ball last. I mean, that's the kind of Super Bowl we had last night. Can't remember many of the commercials or anything. I didn't really feel a lot of that stood out. This was the first time in three years that we'd gotten together with some friends. Before the pandemic, we used to do a chili chili chili cook off. Where we would make different kinds of stews. I'm new Mexican, so I would come with like a new Mexican green chili stew, whereas another one of my friends really likes making like southern style Texan style chili, not chili peppers, but hearty stews. And we'd have these kinds of showdowns. It was more emotional than I thought it would be to walk into a home filled with crock pots and instant pots and smelling a cacophony of different stews kind of hitting me in the face and the football games kind of playing in the background and their kids running around and we're just eating way too much food. Like I said, I had a beer. My one little consumption of alcohol was enough to I'm not hungover this morning, but I don't feel good. It was really, really lovely. So not to say other holidays and stuff, I make this joke about any excuse for a party or any excuse for celebration, but if you got to break some bread with some good friends, I hope you had a good time. And if you had if you cared about the teams in this year's Super Bowl, I hope the outcome was in your favor. It really did see seem it really did seem like this was a pretty decent game. I mean, we were watching it. I just didn't really, like, again, it's like I'm not really super emotionally invested. In fact, for me in a couple of the friends there, there was much more discussion, Rihanna was the singer for the halftime show. And first of all, I thought it was just baller. It wasn't Rihanna and guests. It was just Rihanna. So that's pretty impressive. She commanded that stage. Beautifully loved it. More, we were like, how did they do the rigging? Yeah, 'cause I work with I am hanging out with a bunch of people who work in the entertainment industry. And we're all sitting there watching the Super Bowl show going like, how did they do that rigging? How are the platforms staying that stable? What are they connecting them to? Why aren't they swinging more? I mean, it was just a really impressive feat of engineering to put people on floating platforms and not have them being like the entire time where dancers are dancing on them. Awesome. It was a spectacular feat of engineering. I was more impressed with that than I was the physical acumen of the players on the field doing amazing football things. I'm sitting there trying to work out the engineering on well if I rigged a scaffolding, how would I cross support that and how would I brace it? But then it's also got to hang and move. But if it's going to be floating, what is it going to be attached to? But I don't see a crane. That would kind of broke my brain a little bit. So yeah, it's happy Super Bowl, everybody. Got a lot of chat coming in here. Oh, the hawks, the chiefs would have won in Philly, hadn't handed them the game on a platter. Again, I had no horse in this race. I mean, when it comes to two teams that are literally like touchdown for touchdown, 'cause the score just kept like TikToking back and forth, right? Just click here, click there, click here, click there. Whenever I see a game like that, it really is like what team has the stamina to keep going back and not get demoralized. Like, yeah, we just scored on them. Oh, they just scored on us. Now we're kind of back to even again. And it just becomes the mind game of who can really stick it out to the very last play. And I think games like that can also be a really a really exciting way to kind of watch two teams. I like that better than when it's just like a blowout. No one likes watching a blowout. Like, oh, these are the two best teams in the NFL. Oh, but that one team totally tanked. You know, like that doesn't feel good for what's supposed to be the end, the culmination, the ultimate matchup of the bestest team. So yeah, it's fine. JoJo. There was a lot of chatter about that. JoJo says, I love how everyone was afraid to ask if Rihanna was pregnant or not. Are we talking about that? Is she telling us something? What's going on? So yeah. It was pretty good. So here let me get this out of the way. Yeah, Marilyn, I mean, for what I was really kind of tuning in for Maryland says both teams played really well, made for an exciting game. I feel like I feel like that's all we can ask for for a good.

You Must Bring Your Faith Into Everything You Do

"Quote Abraham Kuiper, who was the Dutch prime minister, I think, or president. But he's also a theologian, but he says there is not one square inch in the whole domain of our human existence over which Christ to his sovereign does not cry mine. And Bond hopper talks about live our faith in all spheres of life. So it's the biblical view. That's what's so interesting to me. It's like there are people who are really taking the side of the atheist Marxist in places like China, right? And they're saying, just keep your keep your faith in that little religious corner. And you think, wait a second. If my faith is real, the goal of God in my life is for me to take my faith everywhere out of the church into the world out of Sunday morning into every part of the week to touch every life, every sphere of media government, whatever it is, our faith is supposed to impact the whole world. So that Kuiper quote, I mean, I quote him all the time. Chuck Coulson, my hero, used to quote that, quote, almost in every speech that we're supposed to take our faith into everything, including politics, including government, everywhere we go. So the idea that you're supposed to keep your faith in some little religious box, that's the Devils theology. That's not God's theology.

Has Eric Ever Read or Heard Christ in Solzhenitsyn's Work?

"I have studied Russian Russian language and literature and read everything by Solzhenitsyn, and I believe he was a moralist mystic spiritualist who loved mother Russia. Knowing the Christ of the Bible have you, Eric ever read or heard Christ in social needs since work or life? Pass. Next question. No, I think, see, this actually is one of the reasons I think this is a good question to answer is because I think one problem that some Christians have is they are overly theological, right? If I paint something to the glory of God, but I don't put Jesus lord in the margin of the painting. Is it a Christian painting? And I just think all goodness and truth and beauty is of God. And we need to reclaim that view of the world. There is not one square inch of all creation over which Jesus Christ to his sovereign does not say mine. That's the famous quote by Abraham Kuiper. And I think that if you read souls in, it becomes clear that a man who risked his life for the truth and who wrote books pointing to the truth and who was, in fact, a Christian that, in a way, for us to try to put him in a box and say, but he was a, but was he a Christian writer? "Rhetoric like this regarding nuclear weapons is dangerous adds to the risk of miscalculation should be avoided and will not indulge in it CBS News special report I'm Jennifer Kuiper Continuing coverage of the war in Ukraine tonight we take you next to a spot along the Polish Ukraine border should be asked news correspondent Steve futterman is there joining us live Steve where exactly are you Washington D.C. is an international city and some people may recognize some of the names Where are you exactly I'm on the eastern edge of Poland the western edge of Ukraine the border crossing is called medica And this is the largest I have been told This is the largest border crossing between the two countries And this is where we've had the many thousands of people cross the border each day I did hear today that the Polish government estimated around 70,000 Ukraine refugees crossed the border in the last 24 hours I've not heard that officially but that was a report I had heard And it makes lots of sense You have so many people trying to get across If they open the border gates completely you would have many many many more people coming across But around 70,000 apparently is the estimate just today So with buses coming in and out I know they're packed We've seen those images especially of the little kids with their colorful backpacks and their hats It's really heartbreaking that they have their lives disrupted in this way What are you hearing about difficulty getting into Poland not because they're not accepted but just the logistics Well it is difficult It is difficult for them to get into Poland I mean obviously the border gates are not completely open And then you have people wanting to be the first in line or just wanting to get across and you have situations where it can get a bit nasty people pushing shoving there have been allegations of racism from some people suggesting that if you are a person of color you might be not as easily admitted into Poland We've heard that from a number of people But it's a very difficult situation There is no way this can work perfectly for everyone because if it did you'd have so many people in this country Polish officials obviously are trying to balance things They understand this as a humanitarian crisis right now they want to be able to let people in but at the same time if they are going to be overloaded with really thousands and thousands every day after week after week after week of this it can be very difficult for them They do not want to set up obviously these horrible refugee camps which we've seen before Sometimes that's the only solution though So it's a very difficult balancing act for everyone involved I know it's approaching the middle of the night where you are and maybe there's a bit of relative quiet about earlier when you spoke to Ukrainian families what did they tell you Well when they come across the border there's just a bit of relief and sadness I mean all these emotions they're so glad to be across the border into Poland but almost everyone's left someone behind everyone has left their hometown You don't like to leave your hometown You have the belongings on your back pretty much People come with a suitcase a roller bag You mentioned the young people with the backpacks one place I went to was sort of like a welcoming center if you could call it that where ordinary Polish citizens have brought all sorts of items clothing blankets toys for kids food and people leave the bus in this area This is where some of the buses go And they're able to at least get some relief there But again there's a sadness in the faces even saw a 5 year old girl get a toy And you know she was happy about that but obviously confused She understands somewhat what's happening but not everything She just knows she's been forced from her home and I mean I've never been through that before I am sure it's a horrible situation I appreciate you sharing your reporting and your time with us Steve Stay safe there and we'll talk to you again Sounds good Take care That's Steve live along a portion of the Ukrainian Polish border tonight He's told it's the largest crossing for refugees desperately trying to get out of Ukraine get away from those Russian invaders for now and to safety We will keep you updated here on WTO and WTO P dot com Our early week forecast coming up for you Hi guys it's Andrew with monument medical clinic Are you struggling with erectile dysfunction and sick of the pills Well we have a major medical advancement that has helped thousands of men The wave technology at monument medical clinic was tested by Cambridge University and the Cleveland clinic and the.

"We don't drill for the energy to get those barrels into the market another countries you do it with far less Environmental regulations governments are gonna be oppressive look at saudi arabia. Look at some of these other countries like venezuela and what they do their own citizens and really were. Were pouring money into stabilizing the region By iran other places. So it's tough for us to just you know. Get that message across it. You know if we were really serious in this country about having only clean energy bill nuclear facility in every state. It's a hundred percent clean right Unless you have a spill and just no one wants a nuclear facility in their backyard and it's just not something that's realistic The funny thing is no one actually wants wind turbines in their backyard. Either i sort of made a joke i was. I was out on gulf trip in in april and bandon dunes which for those who've ever been abandoned dunes. They know that it is windy and too so first of all. It's actually too windy to have offshore wind because over forty miles an hour as i understand. It's like literally have to be locked down but broadly speaking. No one wants a thousand turbines off abandoned dunes because we wanted to be in rural nebraska. Where we don't have to see it so so there is a a really big day and there's no one there seems like there is definitely a nimby thing You talked about the politicization of issues. And i've been thinking about this a lot in the context of education because as you said people read the headlines and you know all will the news tells me walmart has mandated vaccines everyone. That's what the headline said. And then you read the article and you find out that that's actually not even at all or climate change. The world is warming the models azo and they go right to the bottom. It says all the models actually twice as sensitive to greenhouse gases so they had to like depressing tweeted because it was coming up with numbers that don't make sense and for whatever reason our our education system in our society is not taking the time to understand that the media is persuading not informing and our leaders as an industry. Like mike worth adaren. Woods are not getting on cnbc. Every chance they get and pushing back on the narratives. What do you think about that because the counterpoint to that is hey everyone's getting a cup of coffee on this. Yes gene thing. So we're just all gonna go balls on his she because honestly it's too hard to fight in eighty percent of people believe it and so i'm just going to cater to the narrative and make money off of it and yet we know it's factually incorrect. Where where do you balance those sixty think stuff. Because i think. Es geez is a fad for some of these companies to make money right and they're about making money that's what they're about flavor of the day is some of this more clean energy and that's what we're going to get our investors. Give us money. Because they're beholden their investor trying to go to school funds and stuff like that to raise money and they don't want to be in you know dirty energy. They're forced to do it.

"In a different state than you're gonna live could be beneficial to you so that would be my general advice. I think a tuition has has gone insane lately I was listening to a podcast. Where a lot of these schools have their endowments tax free which is crazy to me that it's tax free. And they have billions of dollars in endowments yet tuition hike almost every year at a way over inflation. Since i think the early two thousand so it's out of hand. I don't know what the i don't know. The answer is to that. But i think some of it is. Let's stop going to these other schools where it's not worth it in the itt tech just got sued or something for having a fake programmer. Not beneficial program. Probably the answer would be to make loans a little hard to get that everyone can get a loan for school As to the a program. That's good maybe more crafts and trade schools and stuff like that but for me. I think college is more of an experience than anything else. You're gonna learn what you learn really in your trade school. Which at your master's program you know what outer we'll touch on it. It's the easy access to capital. It seems to always be the problem and win. A woman administration wants to make college more accessible and loans to your point. Underwater basket weaving onset. Looked very deeply added Decided to pass on because there's no careers but if the bank is forced to give that person money knowing that there's going to be absolutely zero chance we're going to pay back by definition. You're you're inflating the thing. Now i wanna talk about Access to capital in the context of oil and gas where we were and where we're going but before we get there one of the things that you and i have in common. We both followed her father's into our into their careers. And so for me. I was always going to be an engineer. I don't i don't even remember it being choice. And i don't mean like he he was like you're going to be one is your one so i might be one urine oil and gas. So i'm going to guess. When i entered only gas leak it was ninety seven. It wasn't really ninety five. When i entered my college strange like it wasn't a good degree to take from monetary because the only gas industry but i was gonna follow my father's footsteps and i feel very blessed that i did because the timing workout. You fall on your father into the military you wanted to follow your father into the the law program. Talk to me about your relationship with your father and and what it was that he inspired you to make you do that. In the lessons may be taught you Yeah my father was definitely a big factor in mine. Decision in my life passed away about five years ago. He had a heart attack on visiting. Actually my oldest brother in the marines when he was getting promoted And i've always leaned on him for advice A large Active my wife actually started a professorship at my law school. that's in his name. "That it brings the country together. We're definitely in a path of colorization uber politic- political of everything. You know engage trump impeach by in for whatever it's getting it's getting a little nauseating in my experience. Those being a veteran who served in iraq. It's good especially in our industry. I don't really find a lot of push back on that on my pushback i mean why. Why did you sir. Do you think what you did actually met anything. Don't really see that. I think that's a lot more of a keyboard warriors and talking heads online thinks up the field of the row populist people that that we see every day on both sides of the political spectrum are are very pro-military and understand that you know it's a bad time for our country on. They treated our best. I think this country's definitely done a better job since then. You know it's it's really interesting. Your and i'm gonna pivot away from this topic. We'll come back to the pod but I would never have like keyboard warriors and talking heads to criticize anyone for making a choice of public service feel so disingenuous while at the same time could get the vaccine for the public goods great. Don't worry about it everyone's amazing. This isn't a vaccination comment but then to criticize veterans who joined the military to fight for their country. I personally i think you and all of your call your former colleagues for your service because without you yeah there. There's i don't even want to imagine what that looks like. And so Talking heads you guys. Aqua the politicians in the policy decisions but thank you for your service. Appreciate your house saying that. Yeah it's You know a really good experience. I had it helped mold. Main trevor grateful for but people i met and the places. I've seen some of the people that you help and you know you really don't have to to think in your life if you've made a difference you know that you made a difference and that's always something you know but you hold dear to yourself and know that you've done something that was more than just selfish which you know not saying you're selfish you don't join the military or other other ways to serve you know other of other ways in your local community and stuff like that but for me. It was just you know. I'm proud to be an american. And i'm proud to to fulfill the obligation. I felt that i had. We'll still solic- talkable ut. 'cause i could kick. I can't visualize as someone. Moving over to iraq got injured was lenk. Do in your whole thing. And then you're showing up with like nineteen year olds. Who all wanted to get absolutely blasted every weekend and are paying attention in class. So so let's talk about what the experience was like for you and then put it in the context of as you know if you're not going to a state school. Let's take harvard as an example. "When i was about seven or eight years old and i always just had a fond memories of the universities access growing watching him on. Tv just like football. 'cause annually had three or four channels on tv I always joke with my friends at actually got cable until i joined the military So yeah i always have fond memories of texas live in houston and i just always saw myself going back there so i applied to some colleges and in the end just knew that the university of texas probably the right decision for me since the. Tell me about that choice to join the military so your your brother is in the military. Still you still would have been had not been for. An injury will always the pull for your. Do you have other siblings. Other than your brother new. Yes three brothers I'm three or four. The military for me the pull. The military was a was a couple of things i said i was from. Dc so nine eleven early affected me. i'm from actually a suburb in dc about six miles away and my father was a veteran And it just kind of was always something the back of my mind that it was just kind of a service thing that i wanted to do and i think after nine eleven. I just decided that. I was gonna do what i felt called do was which was served my country so i made that decision then for university of texas. It wasn't easy decision. I always wanted to get a degree. I always wanted to devolve the footsteps of my dad who was also a lawyer so it was kind of a natural progression. I thought maybe i'd do a lawyer as a second career and not a first career by at our best. It's it's interesting enough to make it political. But just because you have the experience. And i don't like i've been watching some movies going back to the origins of you know september eleventh. I don't know why i've been getting into recently but just historical context and i. That's true too. So i guess. Netflix has been throwing it in in the loop. But it's interesting. Because i feel like the call to service and the number of people that signed up after september eleventh and really like the dedication the loyalty to the country in two thousand in that timeframe was was higher and again i'm not gonna slag on. Us athletes but for goodness sakes. If you are being funded by the and you're competing as a youth address athletes in the olympics. And you're kneeling for the flag separate from that just like talk about biting the hand that feeds and i feel like you know. Maybe i'm misinterpreting this. But the last twenty years i if we had a september eleventh today does it bring the country together on people. Serve or things changed. What's your view thinking about. Your poll and the way society is today. Yeah i mean. I'm very grateful that we haven't had another september eleventh We can talk about gas. Dan a little bit on your autonet. I think that if we had another attack which i think is is only a matter of time. You know they have to be right. Once we have to be right every time I'm hoping on it it. I hope it doesn't happen first of all but if it does..

First results from New Horizons' time in the Kuiper Belt

"What is the Kuyper belt, Koiper belt is the largest zone in our planetary system? And it wasn't even known until the ninety s when planetary strana mors started to discover other objects orbiting outwear. Pluto, is mostly little things, the size of counties or New England states Pluto, for comparison is like the size of the United States. But also, we started to discover other small planets in the Kuiper belt Pluto's cohort if you will. This is the third zone of our solar system. You know, the innermost zone is the rocky planets earth Mars, Venus and mercury beyond that the giant planets Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus Neptune. And then there's the Kuiper belt the begins just beyond snip tunes orbit. And so actually, by the time, we reach Pluto in the summer of two thousand fifteen we're already at the inner fringes of the Kuiper belt, we will be in it even traveling at this enormous speed that takes us three. Hundred million miles, plus every year with still being a for another ten years from now we're about halfway through it in, in your book, tasting new horizons inside the epic. First mission to Pluto you talk in length about the quite rebuilt. You talk about this twenty mile by ten mile wide rock that is of such interest. It's like two spheres connected. Did you actually know it existed in? Was that actually on your itinerary? When new horizon, left, Florida, we, we did not know that ultimate to leave the name of the nickname of this clipper both object exists that we did know the corpora belt, existent right new. We knew how many objects are out there. It's a little bit analogous to if you know in two thousand six somebody said, I'm taking a trip to Paris, and in nineteen what restaurants should we, you know, wait a while back later Oeser there. Lots of restaurants. And so we actually found our particular fly by target using the Hubble space telescope in twenty. Fourteen and then burn the engines after Pluto, to range erect to go there in the fall of twenty fifteen and then traveled three plus years, another billion miles to make that fly by which occurred on New Year's Eve and New Year's day starting this year, you can actually steer this spaceship. I can't imagine what north south east and west is up there. And there's no longitude latitude. How do you navigate? How, how do you know where the heck you want to go, and where you are going? It takes real expertise. And we have some of the world's best space navigators on the new horizons team, a big team at a company called kinetics based in California. And we have a another team at the Caltech Jet Propulsion Laboratory the way that we do this is essentially, twofold, we track the position of whatever we're going to fly by next either Pluto, or ultimate Tuli using telescopes on the earth and the Hubble space telescope to plot. Its course. And then by Ray. Radio. We track our spacecraft. So we know its course and then the job of the navigators is to make those two things intersect on a given day when the fly by takes place. And they can do it very precisely.
