"It was for Matthew to Kuchuk and it's like, well, that really freaking works, right? So it's like, so, you know, I do give Sweeney credit because I don't think I can't remember the last time they were just giving up first round picks at the deadline for talent and it was always getting bits and pieces and that's what we thought this year. We said, well, we'll just get, you know, we'll just just get a little, you know, ancillary minor pieces and then you come back with a with a top four defenseman and a top six forward that you invested in. But like you guys said, it's not Don Sweeney did not lose in the first round of the Florida Panthers. The players didn't the coaching did and that's not that to me is not on him and I think that the further we get from 2015, which we all know was a disaster. Although here's Jake DeBrusk. The further we get from that the further we're realizing that everybody has oopsies every now and then and that was a massive oopsie by Don Sweeney, but I don't I don't I think we're to the point now almost 10 years away from that where it's time to recognize that he's a pretty damn good GM from what we're seeing. So yeah, and even even in 2015, it was not a complete loss of the draft. The second second through seventh round was still successful. I mean, you're you're lost out on Jesse Gabriel who had a really bad attitude and just was not made to be a pro hockey player and Jacob Forsbacher Carlson, Brandon Carlo came out of that draft, Jeremy Lozano came out of that draft, Dan Vlodara came out of that draft. That's all I mean, it wasn't a complete failure. It was just that that particular first round in two of those picks. I think I do like Jacob's moral. I just don't think he panned out to where he he was supposed to be projected as a as a first round selection, but Jake DeBrusk, I think after the the little speed bump between him and the coach or whatever his situation,

"And it's the rich eisen show. Rich and I share many things in common. We've worked together at NFL network. We're both from new York and we're both huge hockey fans. I grew up in the era in which the islanders had a dynasty. So it is a distinct pleasure to say hello to one of the best in the business. Pierre McGuire longtime hockey adult is former head coach of the Hartford whalers, assistant coach for the Pittsburgh penguins. You've seen him on NBC, TSN sportsnet and Canada, and now you can see him throughout the Conference Finals on Stanley Cup central on YouTube, produced by the NHL, pair, we used to chat back in the glory days of NBC sports radio, it is great to reconnect today. Brian, it's really nice visiting me and thanks so much for having me on. My pleasure and I want to get the audience fully engaged because casual fans should be watching what's going on with these playoffs. What's more, it's the best product in all of sports. So watching the golden knights take care of the stars yesterday and over time, moving at two games to none in that series, Pierre this historic trend continues, all four games of these Conference Finals have gone to OT first time that's happened in NHL history. Is this as dramatic of a postseason as you can remember? Well, for sure. Absolutely. And one of the things that's really happened is because of the salary cap, which was implemented back in 2005, 2006 that season coming out of the nuclear winter where we didn't have a National Hockey League season. The parody around the National Hockey League has become unbelievable. And so we saw an 8 seat so far in this playoff, the Florida Panthers, not the number one seed, niece and a record setting team in the Boston Bruins and 7 games, then they beat Toronto, where most people thought after Boston got the Toronto was on their way to a Stanley Cup. They haven't won the Stanley Cup since 1967 and they hadn't won a playoff series since 2004 until this year where they beat the Tampa Bay lightning. So Brian, yeah, this has been an amazing playoff for the National Hockey League. I know some people are wondering about the TV ratings. I get that because you don't have the biggest markets in there, but the caliber of play, the level of intensity, the drama night tonight has been overwhelming. It's just been phenomenal. I'm so proud of the league. So proud of the players in the league and really, really proud of the coaching staff and the league and what they've been able to do so far. Well said, in Vegas, of course, has been an outstanding story since expansion year run to the Cup final and we've known about Jack eichel since he was the second overall pick in 20 15s draft right by Connor McDavid, pacing Vegas and scoring during the regular season. Yesterday impactful, again, that gorgeous pass in the final minutes of regulation setting up the tying goal, Pierre, what does Michael mean to this club and what do you like most about his game? Well, I think the biggest thing about Jack is just how fluidity she's so quick to lose pucks, a strong on the puck. He makes unbelievable plays that you saw in that beautiful spinning back and task to Jonathan Marshall yesterday in the last two and a half minutes of the game to tie it up. He's just he's an amazingly fun player to watch just because of the skill level and the patient that he does things. Brian, so that's fun. He really is a critically important player, obviously for the Vegas golden knights. I think in the last round when they beat Edmonton, the one thing that was really apparent, he took it as a challenge because Connor McDavid obviously went first in 2015 as you correctly said, he's a leading player for the Edmonton Euler. So Jack really took that as a challenge and you could see he responded to the challenge unbelievably well and he still planned and Connor's not. So it's a tremendous story that's being written in Vegas right now and one thing that's not getting enough attention is what they've done as a management team. George mcphee and Kelly mccrimmon have done an amazing job building that brand since they became an expansion team 5 years ago and it's just it's amazing to watch the development of their product. They've done a phenomenal job what a great hockey market Vegas is. It's unbelievable. Talking playoff hockey, there's nothing better than also having a conversation to analyze things with Pierre McGuire, check him out, Stanley Cup central on YouTube, tremendous production from NHL network. Let's jump over the east to talk about Florida's story and more late game heroics from Matthew kuchuk. He's been unbelievable with the game winner and back to back games in OT. We know about the lineage we know about his family. What makes him so effective when it matters the most. He can affect the outcome of a game in so many different ways, whether it's with his skill, whether it's through this tenacity, whether it's with his physical violence that sometimes he brings to the game. He plays it on the edge. There's no question about it. He can also affect the outcome of a game by intimidating people with some of the things he says. He's an amazingly talkative player in the next, but the line that he plays on right now, Brian, with Sam Bennett, who came down from Calgary just before Matthew got there in a trade and Nick cousins who's been really moved all around the league. He's found an amazing home on the left side on that line. That line has been wrecking havoc on the rest of the Eastern Conference in the playoffs. They did a number on the Boston Bruins, but they did a big number on the Toronto Maple Leafs and so far in this year's Carolina. They're basically got Florida, too not the lead in the series because of the heroics of the line, but in particular Matthew. But it's all the different things he can do, Brian, that really affect the outcome of games and he's so consistent with all those things his pace is skill. His physical determination is nastiness. He's just every team in the league needs a map you could chuck the problem is they don't make a lot of that. Pierre McGuire, a guest here on the rich eisen show Pierre. We know the players can't look ahead and we know what two zero lead is far from insurmountable and playoff hockey. But let's say things don't change and we're looking at Florida and Vegas and the Stanley Cup final. What would be your early thoughts on that matchup? Oh, that would be an amazing matchup because they're pretty similar in terms of style of play. The one thing I'd say about Florida that has really separated them from a lot of teams is playoff season their second periods. That's the period of the long change. They have been so dynamic in Florida. They really play to the strength of the long line change and they're so smart and how they approach it palmaris in this step in Florida the year of a lot of credit for the schematic that they've presented. So that's one place where I think they've got a bit of an advantage on Vegas. And also right now in goal. I mean, no disrespect to Aidan hill was planning to offer Vegas and he's been outstanding. But Sergei bobrovsky right now has been amazing. He's been absolutely amazing, Brian. And when you consider the first two games as playoff season for the Florida Panthers, Alex Lyon, a 30 year goalie out of Yale University, which is starting goalie, and vibrato was watching from the bench, and then it didn't work out real well for Alex Lyon and Rossi came in. And the rest is history, and he's been phenomenal for Florida. So I see the goaltending would probably slide a little bit towards Florida. And then most of the rest of it's pretty equal. It would be if that and I stress if I don't want to disrespect Carolina or disrespect Dallas. Who are two formidable foes too. But if that were to be a Stanley Cup final, it would be a tremendously difficult final to win for either team. Pierre, as I mentioned at the start of the conversation, I've enjoyed your work for years. I always learn something when we would chat periodically on NBC sports radio, great to see you again with the video component, Stanley Cup central on YouTube. I appreciate you taking the time and enjoy the game tonight. Thanks so much for having me on, Brian, I

"TJ, I once sold an autographed terrier Riley poster to my brother for 45 cents. Because I heard the ice cream truck coming. And I had that on my wall at one point. Well, so Scott wouldn't even give you 50 cents? No. This game in question that we're talking about at the time was the third longest hockey game in NHL history behind a game that was played in 1933 and in 1936, although not in that order. So I was the first ever host and television history to host 6 intermission reports because these games prior to the game four of the 1996 first round playoffs. We're not played when there was television, let alone sponsored segments of a highlights. Within a sponsored intermission, so I had that record until, unfortunately, because you know, I like to hold these record holders. Three more games were played longer. I believe there have been some 5 overtime games played in the interim, so this game that I was talking about was the 6th longest game in the history of the NHL until last night. When the Panthers won with just where you got 12 seconds left in the game. On pardon me, 12 seconds left in the fourth overtime. They're staring at 5th overtime in the face. When Matthew kuchuk, chuck, lit the lamp, and here's the call, by the way, kudos to Doug play plugins. Of the Florida Panthers radio network because he calls the games by himself. He's got no one to talk to. No. Kind of like rich when he was doing those highlights. So what was it called a DSP in which the garage that we used to do? No, the garage was way out in the parking lot. This was in a small in the main building, I guess, building two, whatever the hell they call it, I've been away so damn long, building one, I don't know. But let's just give a plague in some play right here. Here's the call. Dumps it in down to our right. Here's great first keeps it to the outside. Sam Bennett keeps it in out front. Kentucky shop. He's gone. He's gone. Matthew, good chuck. The overtime winner. The Panthers take game one three two. The final Matthew can chuck is the marathon and the Panthers go home happy tonight here in Raleigh. Matthew kachak, the overtime winner. Three two the final. The longest game in the history of both franchises into the top ten longest games in National Hockey League history. And Matthew katsuki gets it done. Speaking of energy at two 15 in the morning and he talked and by himself the entire night. Do you think he was more happy that the Panthers won the game or that he could find? I totally understood Gretzky last night was like when somebody scored a goal and put the puck in the GD net. You know what I mean? I felt the same way sitting in the NHL tonight studio. In 1996, can I go home and then I walked out the door, Bill peto came in and did do anything. It was Billy peto. You might say, chuck a chow. You could say that. Very good. I just thought it was a queen. His mom, what can I do? Come on. You didn't think of like oh my God. Oh, my God. I said that, by the way. If you just said that. It's your show. It's your name. You can see whatever you want. Remember? I used to do because you heard when a hockey announcer shoots in scores. They go higher register up in there. So they all do that. Many of them. Like that. So I used to do that for a highlight on SportsCenter. He shoots he scores, like that. He shoots his guns. PTSD. It's a miracle. Until Susie arrived at ESPN and told me to my face that that is the worst call. On highlights. And is not befitting of the falsetto turned her off. Now, had you just for this feedback? What do you think? But probably not unsolicited in two cents. She's probably not. But basically, if this scenario of the Susie and I meeting at ESPN in 1996 was like Back to the Future, every single time I made that call, he should just go on SportsCenter. The photograph of all of us together. We've started to fade. Yeah. Awful. So I removed that from my repertoire. So let me get this straight. You guys are in the hallway. ESPN, you see this cute blond coming up to you, you're thinking, hey, I'm the man. And she goes, hey. What you're doing sucks. That's not how it went to. Good days later. I would agree that. And that's how we do that hockey. Here on the riches. And that kids is How I Met Your Mother. Let's do that hockey. All right, let's take a break the machine. Let's bring out the machine. Researchers at the university of Houston are showing off what they call a fentanyl vaccine. Doctor Colin Hale explains how it works. You get our vaccine. He developed antibodies against fentanyl. These antibodies bind to fentanyl if it is consumed and prevent it from getting into the brain. Hail says the best candidates for the vaccine are those who may be susceptible to relapsing after addiction, or those who may accidentally come in contact with the drug like law enforcement officials. "Is the tail end there. Tweak something. Well, you wonder about his health and the health of Boris kuchuk. I mean, could you came back out on the ice? He's fighting it. He is give him credit. I mean, he's battling through this, but you know, those lingering ankle sprains can last a long, long time and you just tweak it and you twist it a little bit and then you get in pain and then you go back there and subsides a little bit, you get back out there and fight through it. Give them a lot of credit for battling through those injuries. Well, they haven't updated the shots on goal total folks who are right now I've got 19 for the kings to 16 for the hawks after two periods of play. But in that last sequence, the hawks were very lucky they weren't scored upon. They had trouble calling his own. I mean, kings have hit a couple posts in this game with some clear looks. Marx just, you know, they were gassed. I mean, they had nothing in the tank and two guys got off the ice, Dickinson and lafferty got on, but it was a bad line change and that allowed the kings to attack again. Colin Blackwell, the lone forward just couldn't get off the ice in the long line change. I would love to see how long that last shift was for Caleb Jones regula and Colin Blackwell. I would say close to three minutes, three and a half minutes probably, and a regular shift to put it in perspective. Is about 45 seconds, 40 seconds, somewhere in that area. So when you're trying to defend in your battling in your own end of the ice, that just destroys your body. You've got nothing left. Well, the good news is is that they should all sleep pretty well tonight. I would think after that exhausted sequence, they still got some more to go here. All right, after two periods, we're tied up at one. Joe brand is standing by and Blackhawk central. He'll have a full intermission report and then we return to the left coast where the Blackhawks are looking to take two points out of this game here tonight in LA and then hopefully two more down in Anaheim in a couple nights. "And welcome back into the bruins beat on seal on this media mine in is Evan Marino. He hope you guys are having a great day. A great week. On today's episode. On this week's episode, we discussed, we started with the Matthew chuck news, because even though the bruins are not directly involved in this, he is now in the Atlantic. He is now with the Florida Panthers. So we discussed that trade or the Panthers better, or they worse, what's it gonna be like defending Matthew kuchak for the bruins? All those things that we get into the lineup for the year. Or at least to begin the year because with the creature watch and the bergeron watch on full effect, I think some people are forgetting, which makes sense because we're people so focused on that. Forgetting that Marcia is going to be able to begin a year, mcavoy, and grizzly will also be out to begin the year. So what are the, what's the lineup going to look like? With those guys out. So we get into all that in today's episode. You will very much enjoy it. As you hopefully enjoy every episode of bruins beat, but without further ado, here's my conversation. With Conor Ryan. And we're here with Connor Ryan, Connor. What is up? Evan doing well. How are you doing? Doing great. Doing great. Hopefully we're at the end of this little heat wave that's hitting everywhere, maybe, hopefully. My friends and I actually did an Olympics this weekend. We did a round of golf. We did basketball. We did wiffle ball. We did soccers all outside in the hundred degree heat. So my whole body is still here. I'm still somehow here. My whole body just hurts. I have not athletically done those things in quite a long time. And especially in that heat, it was brutal. It was. Lots of water. We drank so much water and Gatorade. It was just, you know, we could have been sponsored by water and Gatorade. This past weekend. So fun times all around, but that was not the biggest news of the weekend, actually. This is crazy. My friends and I doing Olympics was not the biggest news of the weekend. Crazy to think. What was the biggest news of the weekend? Matthew kuchuk headed to Florida. And this was Friday night, right? Late Friday. Late late Friday night. It's one of those times when it's like poor Panthers and flames beat writers, you know, have fun guys. But very big news.

"But wouldn't you rather have Mitch marner's contract and be Toronto than have Matthew coach's contract and be Calgary? I mean, yeah. None of those bridges worked, like that same summer that Mitch marner signed the contract. Lining up bridge since been traded to bring it got bridge since been traded. Since been traded, besser got bridged. You know, that was a kind of a train wreck in terms of it got pulled out of the fire, but the whole situation unfolded in a messy way. And then don't sleep on the Timo Meyer $10 million qualifying offer story, like that's gonna be a big problem. That's going our end up in arbitration next summer. I think people underrate how much of a headache it is for an organization to have really good players that are UFAs to be. Even if you're a good team, that's easy. The goal is to win the cup that season. Yeah. It's impossible to get away from that story, right? And even if they're a year out. Like complicates things. Well, look at what Matthew chuck was able to do, Matthew chuck was able to exercise what Jalen Rose calls pre agency. In the NBA context. A year out, he basically was able to force his hand kind of pick his spot. We all sort of, we all sort of knew that he wanted to go to one of those low tax states with a playoff team, right? And he was able to kind of drive the bus there. You know, that's a really stark example that I think a lot of and not just Canadian teams. A lot of teams need to sort of understand here because all of a sudden it's not like you're living in a world. In the wake of kuchuk, it's not like teams are living in a world where, you know, to take another example from a player that I cover in Elias pedersen, right? Elliot Peterson has two years left on his deal. This is not a situation that you have to sort out in 24 months. It's one that could shape next off season. If the example is any indication, which I think it has to be. Okay. Let's get back to the bit here. I want to talk about him as a player. Imagine he's a unicorn. I've seen that term thrown around. It should be, right? He's a unique player.

"Potentially the Panthers had didn't even have interest in extending it. That wasn't something they seriously wanted to consider. And I kind of didn't really kick the tires on at a ton. Even though it came to me through my sort of Florida whisper network, the palm tree network that I still have from my time working for that organization. I just sort of was like, okay, I mean, that makes sense is something they view as high risk and sort of put it in my back pocket. I didn't assume that they'd act on it. This off season, considering what this team is poised to do. Again, next year, I mean, there were a 122 point team. They were historically good. Hubert O was the third leading scorer in the NHL. I figured that's not a situation that you need to sort of move on actively. Now, the Uyghur thing too, I'd sort of, I'm not the only guy who heard this. Uyghur's name was out there. Over the course of draft week in particular. I think there was a sense that he might be available. I think that there's there was a sense that it was time to move on. Internally with the Panthers and their top pair left side defensemen who happens to be right handed an incredibly unique profile. You can't understand this deal, I think, without understanding that from Florida's perspective. Neither of those contracts, like the next contracts that those guys sign are not contracts that Florida wanted. Yeah. Right? Certainly. You can not understand the deal without understanding that from the panther's perspective, they valued these guys as one season guys. And the opportunity to pounce on a unique, power forward player type, and lock that guy up from ages 25 to 33, right? I mean, is there a single year of Matthew chuck's next deal? That you're even nervous about? From a declining, you know, from an inefficiency perspective? No. Not really. No. Not really. Yeah. You're mining his entire he's not going to get slower. It's impossible. And with a guy like chuck, I know chuck's a physical guy with great hands, but it's like, what makes kuchuk special? It's that he's one of the smartest guys on the ice. Certainly. He's smart and dumb. And he picks a spas too, yeah. He doesn't just pick his spots. He hammers them. He nails the piece. He's a genius. I mean, I just think there's no, there's no inefficient season on that, whereas with Hubert O extension, Hubert is going to be 30, right? The first year of his next deal. What year aren't you concerned about? The inefficiency of it, right? I mean, it's just a completely different world. So Florida basically, I think, is really benefiting. From the cost certainty of a unicorn type player, there's really no other Matthew chuck in the NHL. Yeah. And they valued that uniqueness. They valued that cost certainty. They valued the window of it.

"kuchuk" Discussed on The Lead

"Have won it again. This was an incredibly successful team for the entire 1980s, and then they had ownership issues. They had all kinds of problems. The oilers missed the playoffs for ten consecutive years. They were a punchline. They were the worst team in the league by far. Officially, even though it was over a long time ago. Chicago comes into Edmonton and spanks the owners. The oilers when they got Connor McDavid in 2015, that was supposed to be a turning point. It was a turning point of turning points that was the fourth time they'd had the first overall pick, and three times previously it hadn't been enough to turn the page on the franchise's failures. McDavid was going to be the difference. And 7 years into his career, he hadn't been, because no matter how well he played personally, he could not overcome the weaknesses of the team around him. No, it's frustrating. We want to play in the playoffs as a team. I personally want to plan to playoffs. I'm not happy about it. They've been eliminated in the first round. They've missed the playoffs at times. They've been a wreck of a franchise, and frankly, it's been a little bit embarrassing to have the best player in the world and be unable to win a game in the playoffs. This is the first real sustained playoff success. The oilers have had. It's something that for the city. I mean, if you've got a decade supporting just a miserable NHL team and they supported it in incredible ways, that building sold out again and again and again when the team was nowhere near competitive. So you look at those long suffering fans, the fact that now they're enjoying this incredible performance by McDavid by the supporting cast and getting to see some team success. Enthusiastic fans after the oilers beat the flames 5 to four, pushing them into round three of the Stanley Cup playoffs. It's an incredible moment. It's the first time in almost 20 years that there's been something to really celebrate in Edmonton. The fans watching the game from the ice district Plaza in downtown Edmonton Thursday were equally jubilant. Some even taking their shirts off in the excitement. And Jonathan, can you just talk a little bit about the battle of Alberta and how that may be added a little bit of extra drama in theater to that series? Well, that's the other thing. It's been 30 years since we've had a battle of Alberta series. And in the 1980s, Calgary was one of the best teams in the league and the road through the playoffs, always ran through Alberta. It was Edmonton and Calgary, Edmonton and Calgary Edmonton and Calgary. You know, it was like those famous Colorado Detroit series, but taken up a notch because of the physical proximity. Those teams hated each other, and even a regular season game between Calgary and Edmonton can be incredibly meaningful. It's a destination on the 82 game NHL schedule. So being able to watch a very good Calgary team with major stars, incredible depth, the well coached, go head to head with the oilers in the second round of the playoffs. It was going to be a treat no matter what, and obviously for Euler's fans, the way it ended was perfection. Well, we're just over two rounds into these NHL playoffs now, but Conor McDavid has already been doing some historic stuff. Jonathan, can you explain what he is doing? Numbers wise and put some of that into historical perspective for us. If you look at what Connor McDavid and Leon draisaitl have done and you compare it to past playoffs, coming into game one against Colorado, each of them had 26 points. If you look at the scoring leaders in previous playoffs last year, only one player had more than that through four routes. That was Nikita kucherov on the Tampa Bay lightning. If you go back three years, nobody in the entire playoffs had that many points. These guys are scoring a double the traditional playoff rate. And I mean, Leon draisaitl's McDavid's equal in points. He hasn't been as equal in play. He's playing through injury. He's playing on McDavid's wing. As much as he is definitely contributed, he's been partially a recipient of McDavid's genius. And what McDavid is doing is something we really haven't seen since the days of Wayne Gretzky. Maybe Mario Lemieux in the 90s is the other guy who's close. And you know, numbers aside to me, it seems like the way that people are talking about Connor McDavid's performance in these playoffs is different. It's something I've never heard before. Like, for example, we saw two players from the Calgary flames, Matthew kuchuk and Rasmus Anderson basically say that Conor McDavid is being them all by himself. Yeah, we've let one guy beat us a few nights now, so just back to the drawing board and figure out a way to stop him. You know, we gotta stop him as a unit. One individual can't stop him. So we just gotta stop them together. And all time hockey greats like Paul Coffey and Mike Madonna have come out of the woodwork to talk about how incredible Connor McDavid is. Jonathan, are there any comments that have jumped out at you and really sort of stuck with you? The one that really stood out to me was a piece written by Pierre lebrun for the athletic. You know, he talked to Wayne Gretzky and Wayne Gretzky said, you know, I don't know if words can describe it. Well, if anyone was going to describe how Connor McDavid is playing, it would be Wayne Gretzky, who's the last guy who played like this in the postseason. And even for him, this is something he hasn't seen in so long that it's hard to not sell it. It also seems like people just sort of struggle to come up with words to describe what he's doing. So I guess what words do you have for us, Jonathan? You know, how do you attempt to explain how he's taken his game to another level? What is he actually doing on the ice to kind of reach these new heights? He has amazed me so many times over the course of his career with his speed, his capacity to process the top speed. Nobody else in the NHL can move and think and react as quickly as he can. It's like he's come down from another league. He's an NHL player who's been demoted to the American League to play in the American League playoffs, except that he's doing it in the best league in the world. The turning point for me were the games against LA game 6 and game 7. He was playing 28 minutes in game 7 against LA. Those are defensemen minutes. He was playing every other shift at top speed. Nobody does that. And every time he got the puck, nobody could do anything to him. Here's McDavid now the indirect off the boards comes back to the oilers captain, wraps it around. It's gone. Connor McDavid. You play him physically. He bounces off checks. You give him space, he burns you, you play him tight, he burns you. He finds McDavid in the middle. McDavid twisting and turning. Connor McDavid, look at those moves of passive front. Yeah, there's just nobody who can do the things he's doing right now, and that very much includes regular season Connor McDavid. He's found a level somehow that's above and beyond what he's already done, and this is a guy who's led the NHL in scoring four times. This is the fastest player in the league finding another gear. A physical player finding another level of physicality. He is incredible. This is the relentless effort of Conan McGahn. And you think he likes that. This place has erupted..

"Are being brought to oak Madi tea children's hospital in the capital Kyiv. Ukraine's largest pediatric facility has already evacuated patients with non life threatening conditions, but there are several children who can not be removed from life support. Their numbers are growing, as fighting around the Ukrainian capital intensifies. There has been shelling near the hospital at night, according to surgeon Vitale demidov. Corpses and abandoned cars surround the hospital buildings. The saddest thing is that when the siren sounds, we have to go down with the children and parents to the basement. The Madoff tells time. We run 5 or 6 times a day in the basement and back. He said that children on oxygen support needed to keep breathing while being moved and this meant staff had to run alongside the gurneys operating manual ventilators. An image of demidov with a rifle slung around his torso as he cradles a baby on life support has gone viral since he posted it to Instagram on February 26th. Underneath, he wrote, it was very hot tonight. There are very sick children in the hospital, oxygen dependent. Volunteers have been bringing food, supplies, and medicine. So far, everyone is provided for demidov posted, but I don't know for how long. Among the wounded is a boy whose ten year old sister and parents were reportedly killed by Russian saboteurs. Another patient is a boy who suffered shrapnel wounds to his neck during the shelling of Kyiv. Due to the severity of the injury, in order for us to stop the bleeding, the boy had to undergo surgery right in the admission department of the trauma center of the hospital, says pediatric surgeon Oleg godic. The boy is currently in critical condition and on a ventilator. Photos shared with time by demidov and other hospital staff show several other children with appalling wounds, and one a young boy's right cheek has been ripped open, and another, a teenage girl lies on a gurney with leg injuries, her pants shredded and bloodied. One appears to show a young lifeless body lying under a makeshift covering of cardboard. Several children, including babies, are seen lying in the hospital's basement. While attempting to save children injured in war, staff are also treating those with preexisting conditions. Amid the shelling, complex surgery was performed on a 15 year old girl, who arrived four months ago from the valen region in Ukraine's northwest, with a diagnosis of lymphoblastic leukemia. Vadim kuchuk, the head of the intensive care unit of the center for pediatric cardiology and cardiac surgery says that for now the intensive care unit has been moved to the basement, among them are at newborn preoperative patients and children after cardiac surgery. Many of whom are in serious condition. Some are on ventilators or undergoing dialysis. There are also patients who are with their parents in the basement, he says, currently we only perform emergency surgeries on patients who would die without cardiac surgery. We have to postpone planned operations until the end of this war. The medical staff of the clinic has been working invariably since the beginning of the fighting, as not everyone is able to get to the hospital. As he was writing to time, he received information that a child with a congenital heart disease had died because they could not reach the hospital. Amid all of this, staff attempt to boost the morale of their young patients, songs or song and games played during air raids. Two birthdays have even been celebrated in the basement. But the challenges are overwhelming. Natalia karpenko, head of the intensive care unit struggles to contain her emotions, the children are suffering, she says..
