"Around the country and that talks to the trucking industry So let's get the latest there would do that with Lee classical He covers all things transportation for Bloomberg intelligence And Lee let's start with rates here I know there's huge huge demand for truckers to move stuff around here in this supply chain What's that mean for rates Yeah Thanks Paul You know it just means they're going up and they're going to continue to go up When you look at the spot market you've seen rates go up about 38% year to date They're kind of off their highs that we saw in the second quarter They're down around like 5 or 6% from those highs but they still remain well above last year levels And that's really because capacity is tight capacity is tight along the whole supply chain whether we're talking about trucking or we're talking about other things such as rails air freight you name it It's really tight capacity out there Oh yeah And I wonder when does it end What's going to be the peak for rates here for example Yeah so we've been pretty bullish on the truckload spot We've recently done a survey with our data partners truck stop dot com And what we're seeing really is a tight tight market where people believe that things are going to continue to remain site Low growth about 62% of the truck drivers that we pulled believe that growth is going to continue on the load side And that's about 1300 basis points above the third quarter average That also translates into an expectation for higher rates about 55% expect rates to be up And again that's about 15 percentage points above the third Q average So what we're seeing is the expectations are at least in the spot market where a lot of these on our operate owner operators play as demand to increase and that will drive rates higher And we saw an earnings season It's really going right now but a couple of companies have reported earnings JV hunt which is a large intermodal player They're also a major truckload provider So they're truckload contractual rates increased 29% in the third quarter which is an acceleration from the 25% increases in two Q and then you also saw really large rate increases by a smaller company called Pam transportation They saw their revenue per mile excluding fuel surcharges increased 42% in the third quarter We've had a couple other companies a report heartland They didn't really give you the rate data but what they did say is that their margins increased 650 basis points to about 25% That's an ebit margin As you know about a lifetime ago 30 years or so I covered the truckers and there's three truckers you just mentioned they were in existence then they're stone business today It's like one of those things that you're always there you don't think about it So Lee you see the supply chain like nobody else you cover the big tankers You cover the rails You cover the truckers kind of end to end What is your best guess as you talk to those various parties about when we'll get to see a meaningful improvement in what is a global supply chain issue Well in Southern California they reached another record in terms of a backlog of ships just I think the number was about a hundred that are anchored outside of Southern California So that's another record It's going to take time to get through that backlog It's not going to happen overnight It's not going to happen because the Biden administration says it's going to happen It's going to take a long time We expect things to remain extremely tight into lunar new year We think things will start to ease afterwards They'll still remain historically fight but not at these kind of peak levels And that's kind of where like we said earlier we remain extremely bullish on the truckload cycle We're not calling a peak We think it's more going to be in the elongated pate We'll see rates relatively high Because at the end of the day there's a labor shortage And it's not just trucking right It's warehousing It's at the shippers So truckers aren't able to get in and out of at a dock because the company that they don't have the people the warehouse people to move the shipments in and out of the truck So there's delays within the supply chain all across it Can I ask the dumb question here Who pays for the higher rates as in like if I'm a company like Walmart for example and I use you tracking company do I license you out like a long time and have bulk rates How does that kind of work I guess I'm wondering how much they're capturing of this Well Walmart has one of the largest private fleets of its own Sure I just use that an example Right So it's a huge purchaser of transportation So when so they have contracts with various trucking companies And just because you have a contract doesn't necessarily mean the shipper will execute on the contract or the truck driver will execute on the contract because there might be something better out there But if you want to build a long-term relationship with your shippers or your purchase transportation providers then you're obviously going to execute on that contract that contract price that you negotiated on So at the end of the day as spot rates rise they're able to increase their contract rates and that higher rate is paid by the shipper which then has to decide do I pass that cost on the consumer or its customer Or do they just eat the cost I mean if we're talking about it obviously has a small impact on larger items on a per unit basis versus if you're delivering toilet paper or cereal boxes The incremental increase is probably pennies on the box at that So why do we have the labor shortage I know in the UK and the Lori drivers that's very much of a Brexit immigration issue to a large extent What happened here I mean there's a whole host of reasons I think your favorite tough job Yeah oh no doubt And that's it Yeah I mean you know so the average trucking trucker makes around $55,000 a year Obviously some make more so make less Some of a lot of truckers are over the road They're very homes that work life balance just really isn't there You have to be 21 years or older to do interstate trucking So to get so if you're not going to go to college and you're looking for a trade the trucking industry kind of loses a lot of people people that maybe finish high school and then are looking for something to do So they do lose a lot of that And then you just have increased competition right now for labor So if you had your choice between to be on the road and making the same amount of money working at warehouse probably going to work on a warehouse unless maybe you don't like your family But most people are going to want to be closer to home Hailey thanks so much for joining us We always appreciate chatting with you about all things on that supply chain link classical Bloomberg intelligence senior transportation and logistics analyst All right coming up on the program European earnings momentum lacks catalysts to really push those share prices higher We're gonna head to London for the latest You're listening.

You were right for for weeks and months before this finally happened now that we are here and everybody's scrambling to figure out what can be done. I feel like we owe it to you. Who has been right to ask what can be done now. Virtually i'd ask is that. The president united states take some meeting with our team. We want to be proactive partners in this. We wanted to be proactive partners. This whole time and we have a plan in the solution. There is an army of americans right now at work their private organizations private citizens human rights organizations veterans organizations faith based organizations from all walks of life. There are people in government who are busting their butts right now from all sides of the aisle. This is a whole of american effort. The president needs to understand that the american people want exit honorably and that we have screwed it up but we can still fix it. So here's how we do it. We have a beachhead in cobbler. Eight now. I know this is going to sound crazy. But the taliban afraid of us. They're afraid that if we stay they could lose the country. They're not gonna fight us for these people. And i'm willing to risk that we have the largest military on the planet. Use it for one. Good purpose to get these people out. We have a beachhead in kabul. We need to keep it open for as long as we can and put as many people onto his many planes as we possibly can and then we need to go to places that we don't have beach. there's a guy. I'm talking to right now in mazari streets. I haven't this talking to privately one. Because i need. I need to talk to somebody. And i hear from someone who is inside taliban territory here. It was like for myself. And i talked to them the night that the taliban took over his city and he he told me the next day he said i told my wife matt zeller called me and now we have hoped because maybe maybe you can help get us out. They have hoping the american people and i told them brother. I don't know what's going to happen. I can't advice you. I only know that we have one airport cobbled. It doesn't even seem to be functioning at this point. It is now. But it wasn't. Then i said i can't tell you what to do. He said well. I'm gonna have to think about it. But he said he still loved us. He was still proud of the service he did with us and he wouldn't change it and he thanked us for a good life. That guys were fighting for those people we can go in and get them he still alive. They haven't killed these people in the places. They're going door to door in cities where we are not they are taking them away in kabul. They're telling them. Hey but putting you on a list. We're gonna be coming back when the americans are going in some cases. Yeah it sounds like according to what your correspondents there are now started. Actually take people away. We need to use the military that we have to take notes controversial. I know it's not popular but my goodness would is more popular. The mass death. "Of the breakdown a nation on edge as we prepare for a transfer of power. We hope it's going to be peaceful. We think it will. We're gonna dig into the security situation in the wake of the violent January 6th attack. In the nation's capital and look ahead to the coming days. Things were, thankfully, come over the weekend despite threats of demonstrations by far right groups, But authorities are still on high alert in D C and across the country. We're gonna talk about all that. And what's ahead for the GOP and the country once Trump leaves office, and I must say we have an all Star group here to chew this all over. It is dinner time after all, so we're gonna do some chewing. First up Katie or are Sacramento Reporter and Katie. You were out and about in Sacramento across the street from the capital yesterday. Of course, there was a lot of security up, but sort of tell us what you were looking for. And what actually happened. What was the mood there? Yeah, It's funny. You know, when you I didn't know what to expect. I didn't know if I would get to the bureau and see mobs of you know, people protesting the inauguration. People supporting Trump people supporting Biden Harris that you know things like that. Instead, I got there and there was Literally. I did not see a protester until like, maybe later that afternoon, there was a handful. I mean, I could count. Unlike two hands, the number of protestors I saw what I did see immediately upon getting into downtown was just the heavy presence of the National Guard. They were Stationed in front of several state office buildings, most notably You know, they weren't just standing there. They were in their full like combat uniforms armed, you know, machine guns out at tanks parked in the street, or I don't have their take military vehicles parked in the streets. Huge presidents of speech P officers. There was a 6 ft fence around the capital and then a fence inside of that, so it was just a very surreal It was a very surreal scene again. No protesters, all right, but I mean, and that does compare to I mean, you have covered some pretty Violent protests in Sacramento before we did see some folks out on January 6th the same day the capital was mobbed. I mean, do you feel like this was a response? You know the lack of protesters was a result of this heavy security situation. Yeah, I mean, well, I do think that it was the capital's way of preparing for what very possibly could have happened. As you mentioned there have been protests in Sacramento for months Be. They protest in support of black lives matter, which were overwhelmingly peaceful. Um, you know, moved through the streets, but there was still heavy police presence We have seen Groups like the proud boys demonstrating at the Capitol and getting into fights with people from Antifa groups that have in it has turned violent before, so it's not like the law enforcement was preparing for no reason. But it's almost as if These groups that would have turned out sort of knew that they were expected and kind of didn't come because they knew that they were expected. Yeah, big relief overall, for sure. What are you hearing? If anything from legislators from the governor's office in terms of do they feel like now the crisis has passed, or they really do. They really just need to keep their guard up. There is relieved that nothing's happened so far. I mean, I think the guard is certainly going to be kept up at least through Wednesday, the inauguration. We still have been hearing warnings that yes, you know, these protests might not have happened on Sunday, but there's still potential for them to happen. I personally feel like perhaps they might not be as massive as we were thinking given that there There doesn't seem to be a ton of them mentum for them right now. But again, you never know what people are planning, and I know that lawmakers have expressed some concern about these protesters. There was last week a several women stood up in a Senate budget hearing committee and started You know, yelling about buying guns and yelling that their you know their displeasure with the lawmakers? Essentially, so I think there are people that are nervous, but that is again why we're seeing such a huge law enforcement presence around the capital. And I think something we're going to get into with our other guests is like just I mean, I think we're help preparing to get through the inauguration. But these groups aren't gonna go away. Come Wednesday, right? I mean, this is a longstanding problem. Switching gears before we let you go. Katie Kamila Harris did resign her Senate seat. Today. She is obviously gonna be sworn in as vice president. We have out Spadea, the first Latino senator from California who will be sworn in the next day or two. Um, obviously have your purse error General also got appointed to be the head of Health and human Services in D. C. So Any thoughts on who might replace him and he scuttlebutt on the Padilla change. Like what do you hear enough They're about about Thies. Musical chairs is a zit is, you know, I mean, and I think it's important to note that Attorney General has been historically like a launching pad for politicians in California first. Kamila Harris you Jerry Brown was attorney general. Um So not that he needed a launching pad to understand It's a very high profile position for people. Um, it'll be interesting to see if the same kind of issues that sort of plague Newsome during the Senate appointment. Kind of haunt him during the G appointment, and that being That was kind of self inflicted. You meet in a long time, and you know, but he was feeling a lot of pressure from certain different like I certainly didn't different groups to appoint, like, say, ah, Black woman or a Latino man. Or, you know, perhaps you know, Darryl Steinberg's name has been mentioned. He was the former Senate leader and now the mayor of Sacramento. As a possible a G. He is a white man does that you know hurt him in this in this race. I know Lorena Gonzalez, who assemblywoman who had wanted to be secretary of state, and now she did not get that appointment, You know? Is she someone that's gonna be in the mix? Probably not because she's got a very 10 years the relationship with tech companies. But there are a lot of people who would like that position. And you can be sure that they're lobbying the governor right now. That's it right to try and get it as we speak. All right, Ktrk qd Sacramento reporter. Thank you so much. You're welcome. Thanks, Katie. Stay safe out there. All right. We are going to take a short break. Now When we return, we'll continue our conversation. Or start our conversation. Actually with U. S.
