Many Survivors of Haiti Earthquake Expect No Help From Officials

"Last weekend's devastating 7.2 magnitude earthquake. Compounding the misery, Tropical Storm Grace, the aftermath of President Juvenal Maurice's assassination. And, of course, the coronavirus pandemic. ABC is Matt Gutman is in Haiti with more from what we've seen. AIDS seems to have been slow in coming to the southwest of Haiti, that devastated area UNICEF now doing assessments, saying that there are now 500,000 Children without adequate shelter without food without clean water. When you drive by these areas, you see house after house, especially in these mountain villages completely collapsed. And when we spoke to the locals, we noticed that There's nothing there. There was no aid. There were no Tark's. There's no water food being brought to them. There's no insurance whatsoever, and they said they didn't expect to get any not from the government. They hope that maybe NGOs would help. But as far as we have seen help, had not gotten to some of those most remote villages that perhaps needed it most and hospitals right now are slammed. There are patients still coming in. With injuries from the quake. We were at a hospital, a nine year old boy came in with a bilateral pelvic fracture Incredibly painful well over 100. Patients have been medevacked here to Puerto Prince for further treatment. But this is going to last a long time. Matt Gutman, ABC News

Florida School Board to Require Masks Despite Ban

"In California and Illinois head back to school in a few weeks, they will have to wear masks Florida and Arizona. Meanwhile, band mask requirements in schools. Some districts there are insisting on them anyway. Schools are reopening just as the rise of the more contagious Delta variant shifts. The fight against Covid 19 masks are back on top of the policy agenda and confusion reigns. It's a story by Ben Chapman, Education reporter at The Wall Street Journal, then explain Well, Basically, the situation is different, depending on where you are. And the solutions to the question of how to stop. The spread are all over the map. Um, students in California, Um and Illinois are required to wear masks in New York City. They'll be required to where mass as well. Then there are places like Florida and Arizona that have banned masks, Um out mask requirements in schools. And, um, you know, some districts there are requiring masks anyway, so it's kind of a scattershot situation in California. Some districts don't want to be part of the Of the mandate there, and at least one district is suing to try and exempt itself. So, um, it's a chaotic situation. Holy cow, even in Florida. Uh, that's your referenced. Did you say some students can transfer if they're not happy with a mask policy? It looks like that is the case. Um, On Friday, the Florida Board of Education issued an emergency order that lets parents transfer their Children to another school if the student has been subjected to harassment for choosing not to wear a mask at school, so That is the case.

"The KTAR news at all right we're gonna do this now to get you informed going to lunch some things you didn't know did you hear this this room has reaction to the hottest news stories over the weekend coronavirus cases continue to rise but it's not just case numbers hospitalizations in Arizona hit a record high inpatient bed use ICQ beds ventilator use and the percent positive rate continues to climb now businesses are starting to shut down again after employees have tested positive so I say somewhat facetiously did you hear this on Wednesdays Mike Broomhead show last week we were told by the governor and by doctor crest that June eleventh was the expectation of the date that they believed we were going to see the peak in a lot of this so we're looking today is the tenth so tomorrow is Thursday over the weekend by Monday if we are at Monday and we are still climbing I will have a much different opinions yes and the different opinion is we're still climbing in numbers wearing a mask in public is what the data saying is a better idea we're seeing a huge increase out of retirement homes going into these hospitalizations and I think that we're going to send a clear message let's all get on this protesters otherwise maybe wearing a mask for a couple weeks is going to slow this down that seems to be the biggest change over the last couple days is masks in public certainly met yet masked in public spaces in maybe a recommendation to businesses to yeah there's a lot most businesses it difficult restaurants but most businesses now we're starting you starting to see people require it and most people are complying yeah I'd be pretty tough to ask people to wear a mask while E. number two protests have been going on for over two weeks since the killing of George Floyd but now a new incident has rekindled protests in Atlanta did you hear this about race shard Brooks being shot in Atlanta police say he resisted arrest which turned into a struggle leading to him grabbing an officer's taser Brooks fleas and appears to point the stun gun at the officers well he runs away investigators say officer Garrett Ralph and then fired three shots at Brooks who died at the hospital after surgery an autopsy reveals Brooks was shot twice in the back and those the manner of death as homicide so the the shot in the back is not the deciding factor because you know we turn to chosen turned in pointing the question is going to be did those officers have a legitimate fear for their lives because it was a taser he was pointing that's going to be the question because he can turn quickly to point a gun and turn away and get shot in the back it's not the bullet in the back it's what we're they in fear for their life that's going to be the question yeah and what's the policy to is what I'm interested that's the two different investigations wanted criminal and they they could be cleared criminally but be way short policy which may be why they fired him maybe the decision inside the agency was he turned with a taser you knew it was a taser you should have been fearful for your life I don't know that yet but we're gonna find out soon I'm sure that so sports are starting to come back to the NBA has announced their plans to return to the court soon baseball hoping to finalize a shortened season and football is right around the corner but is some college teams report back to camp they are met with a new type of contract did you hear this football players and their parents at Ohio state's were asked to sign a corona virus pandemic waiver before returning to campus for voluntary workouts on June eighth and it's called the Buckeye pledge it as players to quote help stop the spread of covert nineteen and I accept I may be exposed to covert nineteen and other infections I'm reasonable I think anybody they're trying to indemnify themselves it makes perfect sense now you're not going to tell someone that they have to go into now that they've signed a waiver you're not gonna put them intentionally endanger but you know I you gotta understand businesses protecting themselves I don't know I imagine we're going to see a lot of the stuff concerts with fans go into the stands I would imagine this is going to be a part of the process I just am looking for to get back to a game didn't president trump say that they're gonna have waivers at his rallies wave I think the temperature checks waivers and they're gonna knock require masks but they're gonna make one available to everybody in the rallies I wonder what percentage of his followers will well I think it's going to be a high percentage I really yeah I think you will see a high percentage of people wearing them and the odd thing is going to be some of them may be wearing them improperly but I'll bet you will see a pretty high percentage of people wearing I'll take the under on that okay who's right and then this there may not be any signs of intelligent life in the studio Mike but did you hear about this a new study published in the astrophysical journal estimates that there could be over thirty active communicating intelligent so of civilizations in just our galaxy alone Christopher consulates is a professor at the university of Nottingham he says quote there should be at least a few dozen active civilizations in our galaxy under the assumption that it takes.

"KTAR news ninety two three FM and the KTAR news at thanks again for being here conversation about what we do to change things symbolism of course is what we're doing right now protesters symbolism they changed nothing but they do lead to change it is a symbolic gesture it is people coming together to say we want things to change but it changes nothing let's be honest I'm not I'm not diminishing its power it leads to change but it's symbolic cops kneeling with protesters changes nothing it's symbolic removing Confederate monuments or memorials changes nothing but it can be symbolic so there is a push there are six Confederate monuments in Arizona and the secretary of state wrote a letter Katie Hobbs send a letter to the Arizona department of administration asking for the removal of the monument to Confederate soldiers at the state capitol this is at Wesley Bolin plaza plaza I'm sorry so I didn't know there were six Confederate monuments memorials in Arizona I had no idea there were six and I will tell you I'm I mentioned earlier growing up in the south I saw a different side would people see about the confederacy many people seen as heritage not hate I'm not condoning it not excusing it I'm explaining it that if you're listening to what someone sans you can be offended by something or or think someone is really out of their minds with something and then when you hear what they have to say about it it could be completely wrong when I see people wearing Che Guevara T. shirts it makes me crazy that when you see college students wearing that is if this guy was some symbol of freedom and a freedom fighter and you look at what that guy actually did it makes me laugh until you have no idea maybe some of do know what they're talking about but you also understand for a lot of kids it's just a symbol when you're in college it's just something else you know if we are truly moving toward symbolism for meaning meaningful change then there's room for a conversation but it's not like Katie Hobbs is going to write a letter please change this in the governor's gonna get the letter and handed off to one of his people and say go change this what's the reason it's a symbol of hate to okay what what I mean what are we doing because I want to have this conversation I'll be honest with you I want this conversation with everyone of my friends I wrote a letter to my friends I sent it to both of them the same letter so they both saw the whole thing I have a friend of mine it's very liberal name Seth it was the first time I've ever gone to a bar mitzvah it was my entered my introduction to Judaism and and to go to his to go to his synagogue with him go to temple with him and watch a a a bar mitzvah and he was never my Jewish friend my friend Donald was never my black friend growing up he was just my friend in Spanish class and these kids when we were kids these kids played a big part in my life and now here we are forty years later and now all of a sudden it we're on opposite planets when it comes to things politically sometimes but I never want to lose the friendship and thankfully none of us have lost the friendship we disagree on certain things but the the love for each other because we know each other's hearts hasn't changed and I would not want for the sake of a statue or something else my friend to feel as if we are still honoring a time in American history where we fought over the ownership of human beings if that's truly what that symbolizes then take it down I have no problem with that and the other side of this conversation has to see that for some they're talking about the heritage of their family and they don't see it as a sign of racism they see it as a sign of southern heritage well that's where the conversation lies because many of those people that look at as a sign of heritage would honestly say I certainly don't mean this that it's okay to own another human being that slavery was a despicable part of American history that ended way too late most people in the south would say that well here we are in Arizona pretty detached from a lot of that and we've got six memorials in Arizona is this something that is going to bring us all together if they go away or is this just one more thing on a laundry list of reasons why you hate people if there is no resolution for you if you or someone that's just angry and nothing is going to quell that anger how many things are we going to have to do before you stop being angry there is movement and consideration to be had on both sides I will tell you I don't honor the time in America where we fought about whether or not it was okay to own human beings it's not okay one of the most significant moments I've shared I was I was with us I was with Glenn back in his studio in Texas and he wears a show meeting probably thirty people in a meeting and he had this little round it'll that round it was square it looks like a postage stamp like a huge postage stamp that square rusty old piece of metal with a hole in it and he passed around the room and everybody in the room got to hold on to it he asked anybody do you know what this is do you know what this is and there was no one in the room that knew it was and when he got back to him he held it up and he said it was a slave tag and he explained that much like we now license animals and pay taxes for a license for animals this is the way slave owners pay taxes to the government on the number of slaves they owned and they pay taxes and were given a tag to show that they paid the taxes and the slaves actually had to wear those tags and it there you could've heard a pin drop in that room most of the people in the room white some of them not any idea as we all stood there that at one time in America in America.

If you're going to win you need to have offense. He'd have defense. Just like a good football game. Offense is creating the budget building your -mergency fund paying off your debt. Most people forget about the defense though. And that's insurance now insurance. Most of us hate insurance. It just feels like I'm just throwing money out the window the car grabbing along interstate most people just don't, and but but we know we need it. Because man, if you don't have it when something happens Bom, you got a mess. You don't have health insurance. You got a mess. Right. You don't have car insurance. Iraqi cards on you got mess and so on so it's not there to make you wealthy, but insurances are to transfer risk. It's there to protect your money. And. Don't feel like you're getting any traction. And some of the insurance agents out there agree with me on the stuff. I teach some of them don't agree with me on what I teach. But that would be just the guys that are wrong. So let's start.
