Meal-Kit Startup Plated Shipped its Last Kit Yesterday

"Ah from wondering I'm David Brown. And this is business worse daily on this Wednesday November twenty seventh. If prepping for tomorrow's big meal is making you think twice about all that time in the kitchen. Maybe it's finally time to try out one of those meal Kit Services you've been hearing about but you now have one fewer service to choose from the meal kit brand plated shipped its last meal yesterday. Supermarket conglomerate Albertson's switch owns plated is taking it in house as a private label line. So what happened then. Whose left standing the meal kit business which used I used to get a ton of buzz not to mention Silicon Valley? VC money has proved much harder to operate than originally thought as we've discussed before the challenges are rife. It's hard to get people to subscribe in once. Subscribe to keep them. The logistics of shipping. Fresh ingredients aren't simple either. In many cases keeping that food fresh rush seems to require an inordinate amount of packaging which environmentally concerned customers object to. And then there's the planning with the meal Kit Service you have to plan in advance which doesn't solve one of the most common problems people have with cooking namely getting to five o'clock and saying what on Earth should we have for dinner tonight but but don't be mistaken. The meal kit businesses still growing is just growing elsewhere namely some big grocery chains after Blue Apron and other startups birth. The meal Kit Market Grocers rushed in now not only albertson's but Kroger Walmart Amazon and even the drugstore chain walgreens all offer meal kits and they have at least two competitive advantages over the blue. Apron's of the World I. You can buy a kit for tonight's dinner on impulse second you don't have to sign up for a pricey ongoing subscription to get it but even supermarkets haven't quite cracked the meal Kit Code consider Albertson's which acquired played for two two hundred million back in two thousand seventeen. It planned to roll out plated meal kits to hundreds of stores but scaled back those plans to just a few test stores in North Carolina earlier of this year according to supermarket trade publication wind site grocery business over time Albertson's found that the economics of the subscription business just didn't work but apparently the supermarket located meal. Kit Plan wasn't sizzling either. Now the grocery chain is building played into what it calls a more comprehensive in house culinary brand will have to wait until twenty twenty to see what that will look like in the meantime Blue Apron which went

"There's actually a way to look at these at are interesting instead of just yeah, they get another customer win. Like, there's some trends here that we should be noting on windows weekly. When we look at the what's happening with these customer wins. So one that a lot of people have talked about is if you notice Microsoft's getting love as wins lately. And why are they they're getting customers who don't wanna go to Amazon because they compete with Amazon, so Kroger, WalMart the gap and as of this week, also, Walgreens, they're all choosing Azer over AWS. And the reason is they're afraid of 'em's on sadly when a lot of these get written up by press. It's Microsoft is getting into the pharmacy business or make Suskind in. The grocery market now that's not what's happening. They're actually helping the customer by giving him technology to go compete with Amazon. It's not Microsoft competing with them except as AWS versus Azure. That's one trend that you're starting to see more and more as you're getting more business because people don't like AWS because it competes with them. Another one at sea ES, we talked about this little bit the show last week in. There's a lot of hype around Google assistant. And there's a lot of hype around Alexa at CAS and the word you never heard Cortana. Right. But if you look at if you look at Microsoft's press releases came out of CAS, they're really out of the virtual assistant market. Instead, they have this thing that's very non-sexually named virtual assistant accelerator, which is a collection of patterns and reference designs that Microsoft is providing to customers who wanna. Build their own version of Cortana. It's not labeled Cortana, but everybody now has their own life concierge or private digital assistant. And it's actually based on Microsoft technology. You would never know that because the cut the customers don't mention that. But BMW LT electron IX, and you EIA I last week all all of them announced digital assistance either in cars or in home hubs, and they're actually built on top of Microsoft's virtual assistant accelerator, so smart for Microsoft, something we talked about probably a year ago that Cortana would be more of a back end kind of thing. Because they're they've done the work that these companies can't do themselves to handle voice recognition and natural language processing and all the stuff that goes into a digital assists than this really as a great opportunity, Microsoft, even though it's not forward facing. And it's not an a smart sneaker that you can see in your house or whatever. Yep. And one more many people have heard of the sinkhole Djeddai, which is big Pentagon contract. That's coming up for award in April. It's a ten billion dollar cloud contract. It's like the big Kahuna of all cloud contracts. And everybody's been vying for it, Microsoft, Google, oracle IBM Amazon. Now, the bidding is kind of pretty much down to Amazon and Microsoft people believe, and if you watch how the lead up is happening, Microsoft is getting more and more government certifications under their belt. In fact, this week. They announced outlook mobile is now certified for use by the DOD all these little pieces are starting to come together. And they're just trying to show the Pentagon. Hey, we've got the every piece of the solution that you could want. We've got all the parts they're all government certified up to the level that you require so watch. Watch as we move towards April. You're going to see a lot of activity between Microsoft and AWS in the government space. That's my third and related to these stores STI thing because if it is. Isn't like this film. Sue these guys. Joint something something defense initiative joint enterprise defense initiative, general. Yeah. Yeah. But yeah, I know I'm not what I'm not much one for customer stories, but I have to tell you lately, I'm I'm trying to find the silver lining in these things that I think the way to look at them is you can pick out trends about what Microsoft is having success and not having success in selling when you look at these things Microsoft is competing with Amazon retail, right? Yeah. I understand what you said. No. That's the point. They're not on never mind guy. I never listen nevermind. But I mean, what you really saying a really can say a partnership is is a his not a customer with..
