"The Bloomberg interactive broker studio in New York, welcome to the second hour of balance of power. I'm David Westin. Republicans were in the news throughout the weekend as former president Trump took back the campaign trail in New Hampshire and in South Carolina. Of course, on Friday we had the chairwoman of the RNC be reelected run at mcdaniel, and there were a lot of questions about exactly what the party stands for where it's going, what issues we're really standing in good stead in 2024, which is sooner than you think. Let's take a through some of these questions. Welcome now, Kristen Davison. She is senior vice president of axiom strategies and senior adviser to governor Glenn youngkin, Virginia. So Kristen, thank you so much for being back with us. I want to talk to you about Glenn youngkin, but really almost as a way into the larger set of issues about what are the policies that you expect the Republican Party to really embrace and stand for as it gets ready for another election. Great. Well, thanks. Thanks so much for having me. You know, I think that Republicans right now are really taking the upper hand on issues of the economy. Of border security and on education and the latter, Republicans have been playing defense for decades. And we finally got on offense on the issue of education and you're seeing that across the country, both governors and people in the federal level and folks that are looking ahead to 2024. On border security one of the biggest crisis that is happening right now in our country is the overflow of illegal immigrants crossing the border and bringing dangerous sentinel drugs across the border into our communities every state is a border state now because of it. And then obviously on the economy with the debt ceiling continuing high cost of living, Republicans have advantage on there. And so you really kind of tie into those passive living safety and education kitchen table issues. Those are the ones that Republicans should and will continue to lead on in two parts. One, because Republicans have better ideas on how to fix them. And secondly, failure of leadership at the top from president Joe Biden and leaders in the Senate and Democrat leaders in the house. So that's terrific. Laid out a three part discussion. And I want to take them up in turn if we can. I certainly understand why the federal government's at the core of a lot of economic planning. I understand immigration that's a really responsibility the federal government. But education, I know that worked very, very well for governor youngkin. But he was running for governor, not for the president of the entire country. Traditionally, the federal government doesn't have that much to say, does it about what happens with local school boards? Well, then I think it's important to ask why the teachers you can spend so much money on Democrat candidates for president, right? I think they've spent millions of dollars behind Hillary Clinton and she ran and then Joe president Joe Biden. And so there is a global party platform and a principle on the education front. Obviously, now you're seeing the move to have parental involvement. It's also a just the governing for a lot of Republicans believe that parents and teachers should be involved in your child's education where Democrats believe that bigger men unions should have more control over it. So on the specific policy front, I'm sure every individual will have different ideas, but on the governing policy, that's where you'll see the big difference where Republicans will continue to put parents and teachers at the forefront of their children's education, raising the standards for children versus the progressive left, which wants to lower standards, put politics into the classroom and put the government or unions in charge of your child's education. So going in the order you laid them out. Second you talk to the immigration, as I say there's no question the federal government, one of the paramount responsibilities is really making sure we maintain our borders. But do the Republicans have really a comprehensive immigration plan here. The Democrats, I'm not going to say they did either. But sometimes it just feels like keep them all out as opposed to dealing with things like the dreamers. No, that's right. This is definitely been a failure. On both sides for a number of decades. However, I think right now, you can't solve a problem of who is here while it's still overflowing and coming again. So being able to secure the border first is essential to any talks after that. And I think that that's where usually some folks on the left especially get uncomfortable when it comes to securing the board, which really seems like a no brainer. But to be able to handle dreamers and a path to citizenship. And any of those other questions, yes, it needs to be part of the discussion. But before you can even get to the table on that, you have to agree that the board needs to be secured and we have to stop the flood of illegal drugs, especially that are coming over the border going up the interstate to states that are hundreds of miles away from any border. And lastly, a big one certainly for all of us, but particularly for people who listen to Bloomberg, I understand what you're saying with the economy, we've had a big problem with inflation. It appears to be coming down now at the same time an employment situation is very strong. Is there a concern that the economy may actually look a lot better, come November of 2024? I don't think so. I mean, I think everyone would probably hope that the economy looks better. I think that looking ahead to this year alone, there are fears that it will be a bumpy road, especially since some states more so than others. But also when you have an instability in D.C. over things like the debt ceiling and certain regulations, that's going to play out in the market and in different states. If D.C. is not functioning at the right at the right level, then it's kind of difficult to create that stability in the economic circumstance. I mean, but right now, we could say that and that it might be different, but there are people across the country that are seeing how expensive it is to buy eggs today. So we're going to paint potatoes for Easter instead of eggs because they're so expensive. So the cost of living has not come down. And even though that the unemployment, it's the unemployment participation. The labor force participation is what we'll need to continue to look at to make sure that post COVID, the recovery continues, especially in some of the states that have gone slower than others. And now we're going to turn to that story, the consumed so much of our attention over the weekend that horrific beating, ending in the death of Tyree Nichols in Memphis, Tennessee, and we welcome now Bill Bratton. He's executive chairman risk advisory at teneo and former commissioner of the New York City police department. So mister commissioner, thank you so much as I watched a lot of that coverage over the weekend. I thought of you and wondered what you would have to say because you are a true policeman. You've supervised policemen. You've dealt with difficult situations. That was horrific for all of us. What went wrong? Just about everything that could go wrong went wrong, David, that tactics inappropriate use of force, certainly, lack of supervision, lack of leadership, lack of training, and we have an expression of policing the first story is nevertheless story, quite clearly this is a story that's evolving as it evolves as one more details coming out because there's so much we don't know. But there's no denying a horrific event, one that is attracting appropriately national attention and once again calls for police reform. And good news is that policing is always reforming. And in recent years has been more willing to reform. You're not seeing any trying to defend anything about what happened in Memphis last month with this event. So one of the things that strikes me is seems to have been a lot of reform and a lot of police departments, and even in Memphis, they've redone

Carrie bradshaw is wearing on this. Sex and the city reboot. Oh my god. I guys we got to put a tarp around this show so that you can fill this without people looking because it is really destroying my day when i run into one of these outfits first of all every new outfit contorts what we thought. The original show was like people. Now think it was mainly a show about watching people in crazy outfits. And i'm not saying that kerry didn't wear shall we say whimsical clothing from time to time to cetera. But it was always like her bad. Fashion moments were always pretty surprising because she dressed in a believable slightly Outsize way now with the outfits were seeing which are not chosen by pat field the original designer because she is on emily in paris correct. She was like. I would rather stay with darren star. Yeah right i felt whatever outfits they're choosing it's constantly easter on this show. That's what's happening every just like that. We just like that. Jesus says residents but like kerry looks. There's no other way to put a fool in some of these outfits. I know that her style would evolve fifteen years after the original show. There's obviously she wouldn't dress the same way. But i look at this. It feels like they're not decision she would make. I can't picture. Carrie bradshaw who is an extremely well defined character choosing like a flow addressed. That basically goes into the street as she does her errands like. It's so extreme. It's so costume designed not it doesn't feel hyun to the character that i'm just discouraged right now and obviously this will go away when we watch the up for me. This will go away. When i watched the show and i'm reacquainted with why we actually watched the show. Which is sarah jessica. Parker to me is one of the most charismatic actors of all time. If you have not seen the movie girls just wanna have fun. Recently in the eighties was teen dance. Movie she started she was already carrie bradshaw from the jump. She had the skills from the time she was a teenager so the halftime show. I don't know why she did. I have a question for you louis. Okay maybe it's play devil's advocate and because we all know the devil needs advocates right. Yeah do you think that we're being trolled. What very potentially. And i would love that. I would love to be outsmarted by carrying the girls. That's like the dream. Because i feel like i remember when i moved to new york It was during when gaza grow first laws and was the height of gossip girl. And i remember. They used to film scenes outside and we work at tv. If you don't want to see what is being shot you can hide it. Yeah but a show like this is like gossip girl in that it thrives on the paparazzi and people taking photos and talking about it online. And i would buy that. They are shooting particular things outside. That may never even make the show. I mean 'cause you remember the movie didn't they have scenes of like Kristin davis even like filming like address outside so that we didn't know who was getting married in the first movie right right and these are things that do need to be concealed and again i welcome the trolling. In that case. I want these people to be diabolical. And they should be diabolical in fact. It's really surprising that the last chapter of sex in the city we have is sex in the city to which is now like eleven years ago because it really feels like the conversation has not slowed about this show at racist movie with jennifer hudson being the finest mammy. You've ever seen the thing. is that like. I'm wondering too if we're not being trolled but now that you raise that that's an interesting possibility. Isn't this kind of one of the pitfalls of rebooting something. Where if you reboot something so close to when it first existed or if you're rebooting something when it's still so relevant in its original form that it's so hyper aware of the conversation around it that it starts to overperform to like recapture that hype. Like i wonder if it's like they're so invested in the conversation still about the fashion and what other people took away from the show rather than what they meant to convey with the show that they're gonna lean too much into what they remember. The response was as opposed to making the art that they had once created like. I worry about that not just for like sex in the city. I'm not a big fan of that show to begin with but like that's gossip girl right. I mean they got some people of long gossip girl now. I didn't want to mess it up. You know what i'm saying. I don't wanna hate. They do but that is the same sort of thing it is. Your original. Gaza grow aired on the cw at it was for teenagers. And we enjoyed watching ed because it was trashy and fun and now the new gossip girl things that they're ready to suppress the yeah there to invested in the conversation to come. It's so it's like uncomfortable sometimes. Yeah what if they are intentionally bad costumes and then we go to the credits and it says the costumer is kim cottrell. I pick greatest revenge. And then later on a two hour special on CBS that will be almost up just performances from Broadway on Lee the performances plus they'll give out the awards for best play Best musical. I only think it exists to make those three movies with anthony hopkins. That's the only reason. I think it exists Ryan have you seen red dragon if not during this rewatch ever no. Yeah just watch manhunter. That's all you need and hannity rising. It's terrible oh my gosh. I watched it so bad. I had already seen it once. I didn't need to see it again. All terrible it is it. Is it sucks that as part of this continuity it does stuff that as part of this continuity. Yeah so in. Retrospect was not a finish off like i don't really view this. As a great franchise i think this is a franchise that has to really great entries and the rest are just either bad terrible or just may. Do you guys agree. There are twenty. 'cause there's only five of them right. There's five movies in here and percentage wise. You're two of them. Are fine tune them are one of. Them's ex super iconic. And then the rest of them are like i don't know i i mean i rank them and i got like i think i have the same rankings like silence manhunter dragon hannibal hannibal rising rankings. Yeah i guess. I think it's an okay franchise. I think it's a really messy franchise. 'cause even with red dragon trying to like make it continuity like it's still. It's still got some really bad low points. Man have arising is really bad. So bad i have not seen hannibal the series because it got cancelled like i feel like what's the point if the really doesn't have an end type of thing no so honestly i would. I would even though it was canceled. I totally recommend it. Because ultimately what you could just say is that the ending of the show is you could fill it in with the movies. Okay i 'cause we'll graham is in the show right that mentioned and that's the best part of it is you. This whole show is about we'll graham story and the hannibal's i guess maturation as a doctor into a killer and like him stalking his victims. Still like it's really just like a bonus content so essentially it's like a prequel to manhunter. Yes exactly perfectly put. You got interested. I think i'm gonna start it. This is a new new content with Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte. Oh, what? I'm in their fifties. Oh, yes. So, um, you know, won't Well, that's that's fun. I really like this idea. 10 episodes half hour long. It's scheduled to begin production in New York late spring. So I think we're going to see it in the fall. I am so excited. Me too. I think I'm going to go back and binge. The six separate six seasons because you know why not? What else? The old episodes an hour long. I think so. Eh? So I like that. These are a little bit shorter. Yes, I couldn't help but wonder where are they now? Yeah, that's what everybody wants to. That's exciting. Well, and Cynthia Nixon. Didn't she run for office in New York? I believe sounds right? Yeah. Um And so Cynthia Nixon's going to be back. Kristin Davis, Sarah Jessica Parker, but no to Kim can could trail right. And so that would be a real life thing that I think they could, You know, wrap up the story line, but also do something good. Bye. Yeah. The majority of this show I was. I was deaf, too, until The final two seasons. Maybe The girls who lived upstairs from us in college in the apartment above us knew that we had HBO so on Sunday nights they would invade and it was like, okay, we're watching. And so we're like, Well, if we're gonna watch it, just fill us in what's happening here? Well, it's great. I I think I watched it like I watched two seasons and then I forgot to watch another season and I was just kind of pop in and out. Yes, you could kind of do that. I didn't watch that last season, though, and I don't know what happened with neither neither. So maybe I'll just go back and you know to get ready for this season. Wow. I mean, you know what I mean? And so I think that's going to be part of their Story of how this group of friends goes on without someone cast. Okay, We're all in this business, and we all have some experience in this. Elizabeth Reese. Yes, you are in the writer's room right now. Okay, You are in the writer's room. You are in the writer's room and your fan, right, Elizabeth To give her one perspective. You are in the you are You are the head writer for the reboot of sex in the city. This is day one. You're all sitting down on the conference table. You all take a drink of water, and your first order of business is Samantha. Do you open the first episode with the funeral? Yes. Well, there wasn't even know what she didn't even hesitate because taking it head on is really important because everybody knows about all the drama. Everybody knows why Kim Control isn't on the show. It's because she hates everyone. And then you could get beyond that and get any bigger. The show is reflective is outlandish is it could be and not reflective of every Female experience it does. The whole purpose was to reflect women's lives in these particular eras and losses, a big component when you're in your fifties and sixties, and so it would it. I think it would be not out of the realm for this franchise. I'm just so excited. I got promoted to head writer. Your head writer, Elizabeth your Congratulations. Really wonderful. Okay, something else that people are excited about is legally Blonde. Three and Mindy killing is talking about this. And she is writing it okay with her friend, Dan Gore, who created Brooklyn 99. And she said she loves the franchise so much. She loves Elwood so much, and when Reese Witherspoon asked her to write it She said. Absolutely. And she said, I can't wait to see what women will think of the way we wrote Elle Woods. We wrote Elle Woods at 40. So how l is it 40 versus how she wasn't 21. Has been really fun to imagine. So, speaking of, you know, young female characters evolving and then their stories continuing. This is a great example of that as well, she said. I don't know when we're gonna be able to shoot movies again. But it would be great, too. If Reese likes the script would be great to shoot it this year. Yes. Can't weigh want we want this?
