Ballot Drop Boxes Gain Popularity As An Alternative To In-Person And Mail-In Voting

"Worried about casting their ballots in person this November because of the pandemic. They are also worried that mail in ballots could be misplaced or delayed on alternative that is gaining popularity and also attracting controversy is drop boxes where voters can deposit their absentee ballots to be collected by election officials. NPR's Pam Fessler reports. A steady stream of voters in Detroit, Michigan last week approached a red, white and blue metal box right outside the city's main election office. The box looked a little like a high tech trash can or recycling bin. Instead, it was one of several 100 ballot drop boxes located across the state. More than a 1,000,000 Michigan voters decided to cast absentee ballots in the primary rather than go to the polls, But many like Elizabeth Dandridge didn't want account on the post office to deliver those ballots. I want to be sure that it was collected in the box. Sometimes the males delay I'm waiting on a package is what people have sent me over to weeks to go, and they haven't come. And it's a growing concern is the U. S. Prepares for a flood of absentee and mail in voting in November. Many election officials are encouraging voters to use Dropbox is instead to make sure their ballots don't arrive too late to be counted. That's already happened to tens of thousands of ballots this year. Connecticut's using 200 new drop boxes in tomorrow's primary. Secretary of State Denise Merrill admits the state was somewhat overwhelmed by a surgeon requests for mail in ballots and even a week ago, local election offices were still trying to fill those requests. There's a lot of confusion just the moment about when the ballots got mailed to whom When they're going to arrive. It's going to be very tight and the ballot boxes play an increasingly important role in all this, because you know you shave off 234 baby five days from when you mail a ballot. But the boxes are controversial. Ah, couple of Connecticut towns complained that having them outside available to voters, 24 7 isn't safe, even though many are protected with security cameras. The Republican National Committee and the Trump campaign have filed suit to block Pennsylvania from using such boxes in November, arguing they could increase the chances for fraud. Tennessee Secretary of State Trey Hargett recently told a Senate committee his state doesn't allow drop boxes for fear voters might be pressured on how to vote. If someone knows you've got an absentee ballot, they can say, Hey, I'll be glad to take that for you and drop that off for you. They can ask you what you build that balance out or they can not turn it all for you. We believe it's a great security measure Tohave, someone returning their own balance by the United States Postal Service Dropbox supporters dismiss such concerns is completely unfounded. They note that drop boxes have been used in some states for decades without problems. Kristen Clarke of the Lord's Committee for Civil Rights under Law told senators the boxes are unimportant and convenient option for voters a compliment the limited postal box offices that are available in communities and are just critical to providing access this season access for whom isn't clear. Researchers have found that drop box is Khun Boost turnout overall. But there's no evidence at least so far that one party benefits more than the other. Still, Larry Olsen of Laser Fab Company in Washington state that makes the boxes, says demand's definitely on the rise. I couple orders today, and he's confident their boxes are far more secure than the average mailbox, he says. There are multiple features to prevent tampering. The boxes are also made of steel and weigh about £600 they're bolted to the ground, So it's not really something anybody can move easily. "Cascade range on Sunday and a couple other center I'm meteorologist Kristen Clarke now back to sewer Maryland are cool traffic hi Taylor guess what happens when you don't do traffic in a while you forget about your microphone yeah what is happening well luckily there's not a lot to talk about so that's some great news if I just take a look at a map here I can see some slowdown south on my five right there at Lake City way if you're on your way to downtown Seattle no problems at all I am seeing a marine opening so the First Avenue south bridge is in the open position that means cars can't go but both canso north on ninety nine approaching that bridge is just a little bit bunched up for now your next come on traffic is a twelve fourteen thank you very much still right now in Seattle we have sunny skies and it's sixty nine degrees despite a history of progressive politics Washington state voters have never sent an African American to Congress couples Corwin hate ports that could be about to change the retirement of tenth district congressman Denny heck has opened the door for Washington to elect its first ever black member of Congress former Tacoma mayor Marilyn Strickland is one of two high profile African Americans running to fill the seat in a campaign ad Strickland recalls the racism her family experienced when she was a little girl my mother and father drove around with me in Virginia in the sixties looking for a motel room my father wore his military uniform my mother dressed for church they drove around for hours in the evening but no one would rental children to them also running for hacks seat state representative Kristine Reeves who says in her campaign announcement I know what it feels like when it seems like the deck is stacked against you but I also know what it feels like when communities come together to take care of each other seventeen other candidates are running for the tenth district seat only one other has previously held elected office Corwin hate komo news cases of cover nineteen on the rise in Pierce county como's Keith Eldredge says it's prompted a new warning the director of the Tacoma Pierce county health department put out a dire message Parker Anthony chan Roach our grip on phase two is slipping there is reason for concern will be applied for phase two two and a half weeks ago our total cases it's over two weeks was sixteen per one hundred thousand residents that is increased to thirty five far above the governor's limit of twenty five so we are above the state threshold but that's just one of the metrics are you single what we're seeing is that the cases are going up and we're concerned about that possibility the governor has said it could happen of moving from one phase back down to a previous things we are hopeful that he will not we don't think we're ready to go to phase three were a little concerned about Sunday things and faced three chocolate eggs in the tri cities only about half the people surveyed out in public were seen wearing masks this past week calls Carly Johnson says cases of covered nineteen have shot up this month around the tri cities with hospitalizations.

another another former former democratic democratic presidential presidential candidate candidate is is endorsing endorsing Joe Joe Biden Biden in a video on Twitter California senator Kamilla Harris threw her support behind the former vice president saying quote I believe in joke we need a leader who really does care about the people and who can therefore unify the people and I believe Joe can do that and with us right now was ABC news political analyst Steve Roberts Steve what a difference a week makes it did you anticipate Joe Biden picking up this mode the momentum this quickly no I have not I don't think anybody did I I think what we're what we're seeing though is a fascinating phenomena based on one word and that word is fear it's fear of Donald Trump and fear of Bernie Sanders Joe Biden has not been reborn as some useful charismatics move talking energetic candidates Joe Biden today is still the same Joe Biden that people have a lot of doubts about two weeks ago two months ago two years ago the difference is that Democrats have so desperate so frantic to find somebody who can beat Donald Trump that they decided that day either as a group and individually as voters and as candidates they'll camel Harris being an example of of having to rally around somebody and then choosing between Biden and Sanders the fear of Bernie Sanders is pulling the party too far to the left so there's a lot of energy around the Biden candidacy right now but in my view it's largely negative energy it's driven by fear it's driven by desperation there are not a lot of Democrats even this morning jumping up and down in Saint Joe Biden's gonna be a great candidate a great president but this negative energy is very powerful and that's what's driving this trend do you think it's now his to lose or is it too early to say that definitely has to lose end up and I think it's gonna be very difficult for Bernie Sanders to rebound here the one variable of course the one no wild card is by himself as I say he has not been report he's still the guy who can show astounding lapses of judgment he's still the guy who could make gaffes he's still the guy who can show his age very clearly he's still the guy who can appear fumbling and uncertain and in debates with Bernie Sanders and interviews it's still entirely possible for him to make damaging mistakes I think a lot of Democrats even if they rally around by they're holding their breath and hoping that Biden will get its act together and I've seen some signs a few signs of Byton improving on the stop I think he's shown a little bit more energy I think the campaign line about I'm the candidate of those who have been left behind it counted out is a defective and powerful line really echoes of a bill to written of nineteen ninety two the comeback kid although Biden's hardly a kid he's more the comeback teaser than the comeback kid and also this line of of of appealing to the concepts of dignity and civility and normalcy I think they provide a fairly stark contrast to the president who's in the oval office now but Biden is still Biden it was all of his flaws but at this point he's the Democrats best hope and it's gonna be very difficult for Sanders to capture Steve thanks for your thoughts again this morning ABC news political analyst Steve Roberts it's also worth noting that this morning one of the former "Freezing in the cold weather center I'm meteorologist Kristen Clarke getting temperatures across the state this morning is a little bit below freezing just east of the cascades twenty eight in Ellensburg for example spoke at at thirty three degrees right now here in western Washington mostly upper thirties and lower forties thirty eight at sea tac airport come on this time six thirty six Amazon has told its employees to avoid coming into their offices for the rest of this month in an effort to curb the spread of coronavirus and this was not the only tech company making that decision as we hear now from Cuomo's Carlene Johnson well it was two days ago we found out an Amazon employee tested positive for covert nineteen that worker went home sick February twenty fifth but it took that length of time to get tested and the results to come back well now the company says any employee based in Seattle or Bellevue who can work from home should do so until the end of March an internal email seen by geekwire devices employees to talk to the managers to figure out if working from home is an option that's not possible for a lot of employees same thing at Microsoft they told employees yesterday work from home if you can and tell the end of the month but I am told the group leaders will still be going in most days Facebook is given similar guidance to their employees in the Seattle area Twitter I did this earlier in the week as well Carly Johnson come on news and the Fred Hutchinson cancer research center has announced a mandatory remote work policy for all of its Seattle base staff except for security and facilities management that means employees will need to work from home until at least March thirty first no Fred Hutch employees have been diagnosed with the virus but the center was to make sure it doesn't spread on their campus a special Seattle city council meeting will be held this afternoon to consider and vote on mayor Jenny Durkan's civil emergency proclamation it grants the merry merchants youth authority to address the threats to public health and safety from the virus the meeting starts at one PM at city hall well the north shore school district is closing all schools for at least the next two weeks as the virus continues to spread this comes after that district close schools Tuesday so staff could plan and train for this very scenario the update from couples Tammy Mutasa in buffalo the superintendent says this is all about safety and she says right now it is not safe to teach students in their schools because of coronavirus the superintendent says twenty six schools in the north shore school district have been affected by direct or indirect exposure to coronavirus school leaders say they've gotten several calls and emails from parents and staff or in self quarantine or keeping their students at home their absentee rate for students was twenty percent across the district so what happens next the superintendent says learning will shift from the classroom to the cloud all schools in the Monroe district are closed today there are no confirmed cases of the virus there but the district wants to do a thorough cleaning of all buildings and buses and give staff time to plan contingencies if there needs to be a longer closure similar to what they did in the north shore district committees time six thirty nine will get to a sports update next we all have that cluttered area in our home that's an eyesore for many of us it's our closet but what I buy from that closet company out of California when you combine local and do it for less money with Washington state because that's how amazing would it be to have that beautiful walk in closet a space saving pantry or an organized and functional home office Washington state because it's have mastered custom designs that turn cluttered functional areas into beautiful spaces Washington state because it's make sure you never go over budget with transparent pricing and they give back to every project they do support Susan G. "I'm meteorologist Kristen Clarke in Seattle right now we have sunny skies and it's fifty degrees come on news time twelve oh six as we first reported yesterday some Washington College students studying abroad have been told to come home because of coronavirus covert nineteen today we're hearing from Peter Carroll he's part of the Gonzaga in Florence program along with a hundred other students from Washington I had heard earlier in the day that other programs had gotten shut down and I did not think that the the situation had to a point where guns actually canceled he was speaking with our partners in Spokane KXLY Gonzaga school leaders say that they will have academic plans in place for the students to resume studies in Spokane March six on the surface it seems to make sense to put a barrier like a surgical mask between yourself and people infected with corona virus you die of infectious disease doctor Santiago Namie says masks they don't really help with the general population masses now or we should focus our prevention efforts may says instead of wearing masks you should wash your hands avoid touching any part of your face and he says stay at least six feet from someone who's coughing or sneezing mask should be worn by people who are already sick will help to stop the spread of the virus to healthy people local clinical trials are expected soon for not one but two vaccines for covert nineteen almost Brian Calvert reports a few weeks back we told you about the partnership between the U. W. and the local start up H. D. team bio to create protection against this coronavirus HDTVs a meat canned dog you want to be able to make an impact as quickly as possible importantly some interaction to build and take years sometimes decades but this backseat is expected to begin.
