With your Bloomberg sports update. I'm rob buska. This is a Bloomberg money menace. Computer chips are found in just about everything we use. From cars to appliances. But with silicon semiconductors near the limit of their efficiency, it may be time to move on. Scientists are racing to perfect replacements called carbon nanotubes. A carbon nanotube is a material made entirely of carbon atoms. University of Wisconsin professor Michael Arnold. The carbon atoms are arranged in a tube, which is about 100,000 times smaller than the diameter of an eyelash. And use less power and handle much more data faster than silicon chips. In addition, carbon nanotubes are easier to produce than the chips. So what's the delay? Aligning the tubes on a silicon wafer to make them usable has been a challenge. But they're getting closer. If we can overcome these challenges, if we could make these aligned down to wafers, the major players in the industry were really jumping this field and it could just progress at that point could be very rapid. Steve, potus, Bloomberg radio. Bloomberg radio on demand and in your podcast feed. On the latest edition of the tape podcast, a conversation with Matt lucetti of Deutsche Bank. I think the trend of the recent data is with upward revisions. A lot of momentum in the economy. A lot of resilience in the economy and the labor market and less disinflation than the fed thought at the February meeting. So inflation looked like it was slowing down pretty quickly from the June headline CPI peak of 9.1%. And what's the idea now that we've slowed at around 6 and we're not getting any lower? Yeah, I think I would focus on these three month changes because it strips out the very high prints that we saw early last year. And I think the revisions there have been really important. So core CPI looked like on a three month change, it was decelerating down to 3.1%, getting closer to the level that's consistent with the fed's objective. That was actually revised higher by more than a percentage point. And then with this latest data, you have a three month annualized change for core CPI that's four and a half, 4.6%. Very far away from the fed's objectives. I do think as we see core PC tomorrow and be closer to 4.4, four and a half percent. You've seen some disinflation were off the peak, but the latest data tell us that the path here is an easy. It's not just continued disinflation, we're likely to see somewhat higher in print over the next few months. So Matt, smart guys like you, are you taking the recession call off the table? I'm not sure if you had a recession call but are the economists in general taking that recession call off the table, do you think? We've always had a recession call, but it's always been the back half of this year. Okay. It is in Q four for us right now. I think the latest flow of the data fits well with that type of timeline. And it fits well with that because look, the economy has good momentum now. The idea that it's going to fall into a recession in Q one or probably even Q two doesn't seem very likely given the

Thanks, Sean 6 37 on Wall Street. Time to take a look at stocks, some of the names moving in the pre market with Bloomberg radio and TV markets correspondent pretty Gupta and critique Karen just mentioned that CVS is confirmed it's part of the major opioid settlement that reportedly Walgreens Boots Alliance and Walmart are part of as well, but CVS just reported earnings as well. They did just report earnings that came out with a very actually kind of beating on the EPS front and the cash flow front. Remember Nathan liquidity is a really important part of the story right now. They did, however, lower their full year guidance. So that's going to be significant. Nevertheless, it looks like investors kind of looking through it. CVS is not only the name of the company. It's also the ticker shares are up about 5.2% in the pre market. But like I said, they did lower their full year guidance. So I'm curious to see what they certainly say on their earnings call. Yeah, and speaking of earnings, also got to talk about AMD. That's one of the biggest movers this morning. It absolutely is. AMD Advanced Micro Devices as is otherwise known. Shares are up about 4% in the pre market. Now they came out and they actually beat all those profit estimates. Now this is really important because a lot of these chip companies have been talking about the global macroeconomic kind of backdrop and the slowdown that you're seeing, especially the supply chain issues that are really eating into their bottom line. AMD is doing something different, though they're diversifying. And that's going to be a really key part of the strategy. It's something we've seen with Nvidia as well, for example, diversifying not only from graphics chips, but also into things like data warehouses that could one day power the metaverse. Advanced Micro Devices is no exception. They're actually looking to expand further into server processors. And this is going to offset some of the slumps that you're seeing in the personal computer market. Remember, that's something that we heard from HP and from Dell as well that the PC market is really slowing down. But it looks like AMD for now is in the green Nathan, like I said, the shares up 4.2% in the pre market. We also got some earnings from a company that might be something of a bellwether for the pandemic reopening, right? A little bit, a, B, and B for Airbnb down about 6% in the pre market. Now, their fourth quarter outlook really disappointed. Those forecasts that you are starting to see is that perhaps the consumer isn't actually looking at pursuing higher cost rentals, that was a big trend during the pandemic, where people were remote working. You could go to Hawaii and work for a company here in New York. A lot of my Friends did that, not better at all, but the a looks like that trend is kind of dropping a little bit. A lot of those return to work trends are eating into their bottom line. It's nevertheless a, B, and B is your ticker down 6%, Nathan. Yeah, and kind of forgotten about that trend. Now I'm feeling a little bitter as well this morning. Thanks for that. Creating good talk with you. Bloomberg radio TV. Markets correspondent pretty Gupta, of course, waiting for the market open as well with the fed decision later on this afternoon could see some more volatility there as well. But right now, futures are trading little change with S&P futures down a point, Dow futures down 44 NASDAQ futures higher by 12 points. This is Bloomberg. Debbie

"Advantage at Left circle kreider Centers that scores advantage out A sloppy turnover by the lightning and the rangers have made it four nothing Advantage out will get his hat trickle Comes at 1653 Third assist today for kreider You've got to be much your puck management has to be much better than that It was really lightning we're really doing a good job of keeping them to the side and then making these bad little passes in the middle all the time they're going up the middle When it's high at the blue line and that's not a good place to do it Perry had it and he just went up to middle and all that sabana jet did was just to intercept the pass knocking over and then kreider was right there and Savannah said it just redirected it through I think the Spanish I would like to see the lightning more than three times a year goodness He has been dominant with a capital D in these two games He got the goal but he made the play right there Yeah The intercepted the outlet and went to the net But every time the lightning are coming through the middle at the blue line which is prime time for them to turn the puck over and they did that time I don't know what they're having Perry's having a big long conversation with the referee I don't think anything looks wrong about that goal Right there are looking at the replay That was not for goalie interference It had to have been on the off side if they were thinking of challenging But that may be something completely unrelated that they're talking about on the ice They're picking up the hats So the rangers have had a fairly quiet second period up into the last couple of minutes and kind of the story of this game They get a look at the net and it's in the net The lightning.

comments and insights from Bloomberg opinions worldwide team of editors and columnists I'm June grosso Coming up on the show what's it like connecting with people in the metaverse It's easier for some than others Plus have you ever tried goat meat It could become a menu staple in American eateries But first Major League Baseball players went on strike at the beginning of December marking the first MLB work stoppage in more than two decades Players and owners are battling over how younger players and superstars get compensated Bloomberg opinion columnist Allison schrager recently wrote about the topic She says some of the issues brought up in negotiations reflect broader challenges workers face across the U.S. economy Explain what's at the root of the baseball negotiations At the root of it is actually going to happening a lot of labor markets But the baseball strike in particular is the way younger players are paid and the way the superstars are paid So mainly the younger players because they're fighting with analytics that most players kind of peek in their 20s And the way it works right now is when you sign with a major league team you're with them You have a contract with them for 6 years and you can only renegotiate after three years which means that you don't really get free agency or the ability to negotiate And so you sort of aged out of your peak years which means they have less power So they're pushing to reform that And also to put they don't have explicit salary caps but there are penalties to paying very good players a lot of money and to sort of reduce that They want everyone to be paid more of their value Explain why changes in the economy have led to the baseball lockout and just income inequality Well before this is when union serves an important role is that you had a bunch of people working at a factory or wherever And maybe you're more productive people than another But the more productive workers that have subsidized the low productive workers because the unions did is they forced everyone to be in the same pay scheme But as I said the return is to being a high productive worker weren't so large because you had a lot of routine work And also there was no good way to know who was doing well anyway and who really was a good worker was hard to identify these people anyway But now we see this with baseball and every industry You know you have analytics that make it a lot easier to tell who's good who's that As I said before no one noticed that in your 20s people were peeking And also the returns and sort of a bigger more global economy to being a superstar are also much higher So the model we sort of compressed everyone's wages and sort of productive people or better superstars subsidized the less productive people It just doesn't work very well anymore I've always wondered about unions representing workers like baseball players where some are so highly paid and the others are not how they can find equality there That's the challenge because they weren't the huge disparities before So the union model made a lot of sense But you need for a union to work as a lot of solidarity that everyone's willing to go in on it together maybe have slightly less upside but also have more security And if you're more likely to be getting say a $100 million contract you have a lot less of an incentive to go in on that What do the owners want and what do the unions want Well ironically it seems like the owners the ones who would benefit from a union because they would like more wage compression They would like to have more limits on paying the very big superstars And they'd like to keep the model they have with the lower plate players So they'd like everybody to get paid something more similar They're also advocating for a wage floor which might sound surprising but it's complicated in that the superstar economy not only applies individuals to applies to firms So what you're having in every other industry are these few breakout firms who make way more than everyone else And they get all the talent Now baseball that would be a huge problem because you need a competitive league You need to keep up interest You need good teams everywhere So they're trying to keep that from happening Now of course the players union is advocating that all players are paid their values So the younger players can get paid more when they're peak years And the odd superstar who's still great in their 30s maybe even 40s gets paid their superstar salaries And it's just you wonder if the economics work for either of them I wonder if a salary cap is the only answer because it doesn't seem like the luxury tax really works No I mean might have some effect but it probably would be a salary cap but you wonder why you're superstar player You would want to be in the union that would negotiate a salary cap Now that's a good point So when they come to an agreement is it likely it's just going to be something in the middle that satisfies both sides until the next time Yeah probably something that satisfies neither side but is slightly better And I mean this is probably just because there is only one Major League Baseball So they have to come to some agreement And I think the hope is they'll come to that agreement before baseball season starts Thanks Allison That's Allison schrager opinion columnist with Bloomberg news Coming up on Bloomberg opinion what's it like to be a woman in the metaverse Our columnist gave it a try The findings may surprise you And is goat.

"This seemingly as you were saying the domestication's since the cognitive revolution domesticating ourselves it does seem like a dissipation of of evolved tendencies towards aggression and war. It seems like a Much more healthy or at least physically safer expression. Of maybe some of those. I i don't i don't have any particular desire to drop kicks someone on a given to think they drop kicking off see but anyway But but there's but the point is even even what looks to us to be some of our most violent behavior is quite a toned down version of something A lot of other species are participating in whereas if if if it was a true if you know if you of see was a true death match she would you would take the best weapon you had your disposal some gun or something and you shoot that. We'd all be all showed each other read. I'll be done because if that if that was the goal of things just to end life or whatever to to really show aggression in the most of in the most efficient and successful way you know we would. We would all be goners. -solutely i think. Obviously you know violence still happens there. There's a lot of snipers style and there's another of ad sort of insurrectionist violence domestic terrorism and obviously intimate partner. Violence is still an enormous source of violence. You know how we have. I think he feuds look at the diner and you look at the sort of things. That steven pincus accumulated You'll see that. This violence has dropped dramatically throughout history and even throughout recent history And so you know. I think humans understand the cars. That reason Is it better angels of our nature. Something the talks fantastic books. He talks quite a bit about that resting on a copy. Right now kreider. Yes so you know violence still very much. A part of human life But you know one of the big functions think human society and social organization is is to recognize that there is this compulsion to woods violence and to find a to avoid its worst app comes into time managing to try and prevent people. You know domesticate people weed out those impulses to be instantly reactive and high stress and like the. The snappy antisocial moves just deal with that issue with a vet issues arising through something that's the biological pathways by which it arises and the cultural social economic childhood history of their probation. Whatever at one end of the origins. I think that societies must scientists most of the time recognize that the that they need to regulate. That need to downplay it. That they want it You know gratuitous violence and even the losses of individuals in warfare unacceptable right this week looking at the horrific images coming out of afghanistan and looking at the us having withdrawn warn with what seven thousand us troops lost in twenty is.

I'm worth something because there was just a lot of messages that were kind of pounded into my head sometimes verbally sometimes just by a lack of something that makes me feel like i'm. I'm not my needs aren't aren't worthy and to ask for them would be to would be selfish and that fear of that is it's so deep it so deep it's so deep and then you think man we're not young people like this is the time. What's the worst that can like. Well we are on the death bed. It's just us like the my mind. The worse that happens is that person then goes tells everybody else. Hey did you hear what this selfish prick with. This selfish prick wants not crazy. Yeah yeah did your parents ever call you. Selfish was there was a mean yeah. I don't remember like. I definitely in high school when that like poll away is happens to every you know. That's like a human beings path like they have to but it was so hard. Was your mom resisting. You pulling away. I feel like i'm taking care of her. I know it's it's it's intense. It's crazy and the thing that that bothers me about. Because i just recognized that my mom's been doing that my whole life is she refers to she and fantasizes me. Yeah and she refers to me like an object moms cutest moms sweetest moms kichi rose and and as i read and i believe that my mom's a borderline and as i read about it. Does she know that she has no. She has no idea There's a sense of comfort that she gets from me remaining an object. "Getting ready to dive into that. Twitter mailbag my writer. Dai crew did not let me down. I gotta be honest. I was sweating a little bit. I put this tweet out earlier in the morning earlier than i usually do in only have like one person. That's a question i'm thinking. Oh my gosh. I'm not going on the green room app tonight. I can't. I can't rely on someone to call in an help with this show and then i re tweeted it and then started to catch fire here. We go believers says with the good reports of fryer heath thing he some summit fryer youth. Obviously can we expect to see him more than iran. I mean he can actually blog catch. I think that depending on how fryer does and remember the. The pads are going on for the first time today. Wednesday so with that being said if fryer mute can block improve that he is capable in that regard. I would not be shocked if jozy mad. Canada have certain offensive packages. Maybe not a lot but certain offense packages where fryer meath is on. The field in iran is not. I don't think from what i've read in. What i've talked to people that know more about it tonight. You canada's not a big proponent of the two tight end set so we'll see how this division of labor between lebron fryer me's goes down. It's going to be something to watch good question. All right paul ask. I really liked the recent news. That matt canada seems to plan to involved eric than the offense. What positive effects would utilizing derek wide more. Have from your perspective hash writer. Dr drew thank you paul so i think here i'm looking at this and and utilizing derek. What d you can't utilize. Derek watt as a pass catcher as a route runner. Unless you used. Eric watt i as a run blocker. I hope that makes sense if they don't use derek. What is a fullback in the traditional sense lineup in the backfield shuffle. Your feet create a whole if they don't use him there then it's nothing else will work a no one's going to bite on a derek watt wheel route if he's never in the game and then suddenly gets in inserted into the lineup. This is the predictability that had randy feeder written. It was horrible. It was horrible and so based on that. I think it's important that they can use him in the traditional sense then they can start to expand. That's how you think about John kuhn who played up in green for all these years. Even dan kreider for the steelers back in the drew mattis era. The bill cower era kreider is used enough that you were good to have that little you. Fake the hand off you turn in dan kreider. Were just kind of release out in the flat and you connect. There's an easy five ten your game. You have to be able to use him the way you're supposed to first and then you expand so. That's a good question paul. Okay next question from justin. The browns ended up cutting greedy williams. Deeb lead the steelers will scoop up another castaway browns quarterback and rejuvenate his career. While just an. I am not in the know when it comes to the cleveland browns will be completely honest with you and greedy williams. I know he's been hurt a lot. But would the steelers be interested. I think they would be. Would they get him on the waiver. Wire probably not. There's going to be teams. That are much higher on that Waiver wire. i'm sure they would take him. But yeah greedy. Williams could be a really good quarterback. He's been plagued with injuries. Oh for short all right. let's go to the next. one in. Mendez says any guesses on a surprise cut by the end of camp surprise cuts. If i'm thinking about a surprise cut remember these are not players like No one would be surprised at jordan. Derogates why they drafted a punter. Okay so that that would be. Obviously it wouldn't be a shocker. No one really surprised if jalen samuels gets cut why they drafted najji harris. There's only gonna keep so many running backs funding about surprise cut. I'm gonna go and say that if somehow. Bj finney were cut Let's say that they they feel like jc has now or is better at backup center and kendrick. Green is the starter in guard. They like someone like rashad coward. More and bj getting would be a surprise for sure on the defensive side of our to try to give you a defensive player. That would be a surprise cut. I'm going to go to ahah louder. Milk frazee allowed him. It does make the team look awful for the organization. They traded into the fifth round to get him. They gave up before round. Pick in twenty twenty twos draft. But i think that's why it would be so shocking. So there you amend as my answer pit sport bod said. Is this the last year for iran if pad farm you shows out. Do you see a future with them. Both on the team the hebron had all those. They redid his contract. He had all this void years. could he return. He could. I think he does like it in. Pittsburgh i just don't know about the cost in farms. Is that future a tight end. Do you need and eric brown. I'm gonna say. This is eric g bronze last year in pittsburgh and then he will find a new team for twenty twenty two. Brian haynes he asked why are you. What are you most looking at during training camp. Okay so i'm not going to training camp. If anyone out there is listening and they are going to training camp. Please let me know. Hit me up on twitter at j hartman. Agr tnn underscore p. I t i would love for you. Especially if you're close get some video. It can be a cellphone video. But if they're doing red zone red zone work and they're going to urine where you're sitting. Take some film sending my way. I would love to see it. i would use it. I would put an article out about it. Hopefully you're able. Maybe you're able to do that. Who am i most looking forward to at training camp. I really wanna see all these players have been talked about your time. At friar meath has been getting a lot of publicity earlier in mandatory minicamp was james pier. I wanna see nausea harris. Then might sound crazy in some people might be like. Oh my gosh jeff. That's such an obvious answer. But we haven't seen him yet. He's a first round draft pick. I wanna see him with pads on. I want to see him. Just making fools look silly and excited for him. Not just in training camp also in the preseason. That's who've again if i'm gonna give you a defensive player. I'm really looking forward to seeing. That's obviously someone that. I am looking forward to seeing some the cornerbacks whether it's antler defensive acts antoine books junior arthur millette james pierre even just my boy justin lane even my boy. Justin lane love to see this. Brian s. two more questions. Can we expect to. Our skippered of return is a camp body. now i wouldn't think sale. Not after bringing in melvin ingram. I wouldn't say that you wanna bring in. Twos are skipper as a camp body. I dunno near not not at this juncture not at this juncture for sure. Last question for brian are we getting a bt se were slash rider crew gathering for a game. Well brian to be completely honest. And that's not a bad question in one thing that i've really irked me about how everything went down with the pant pandemic and it's it's no one's fault. I'm not blaming the pandemic. it just didn't happen in twenty twenty. That was the year. The steelers didn't have a first round draft pick member chase klay pueblo. At i think people forget he was a second round pick and we decided since myself. Dave and brian all live very close in proximity to one another in the same town. We decided because there. There's a manny brothers in our town that we were going to host a draft party. Ensues is going to be a everyone get together. We're going to watch the draft. We're gonna have fun. We're gonna laugh. We're gonna tell stories. We're going to do a live feed from the primanti brothers. I know brian. Anthony davis he had a connection with one of the managers.
