Pennsylvania health secretary responds to transphobic attacks

"Pennsylvania's health secretary. Calling out what she calls the transphobic harassment. She's experienced K Y. W's Andrew Kramer. Dr Rachel Levine says she's been hearing about multiple incidents of LGBTQ harassment on what she describes as transphobia. Directed at her lately. I have no room in my heart for hatred. And frankly, I do not have time for intolerance. She didn't get into the specifics of any one particular incident, but says an attack against her is an attack against Pennsylvania's entire LGBTQ community. Your actions perpetuate the spirit of intolerance and discrimination. Against LGBTQ, you individuals and specifically Transgender individuals. Governor Wolf recently acknowledged in a tweet that some Pennsylvanians quote, direct hate fuelled attacks. Dr Levin and that hate has no place in the Commonwealth. I would first like to sincerely think Governor will for his continued support, and for his comments, she says. She just wants to be able to focus on keeping everyone

New Jersey places Delaware back on quarantine list, 31 states total

"More than half the states in the country are now on New Jersey's quarantine list for travelers and as we hear from K Y W's Andrew Kramer. That list once again includes Delaware. Delaware is one of 10 states added two New Jersey's travel advisory meeting. If you travel to the Garden state from another state that's on the list or being asked the quarantine for 14 days, there are now 31 states on the list. Delaware was added a few weeks ago taken off And now it's back. Governor John Carney isn't taking this news lately. I made his health frankly, and it doesn't make any sense, Carney says. The state is in better shape today as Faras. The numbers go, then that was when it was taken off the list last week. He thinks Delaware is back on it because it's just a couple of bad days recently, where test results showed over 100 new cases in the state. Each of those days we have a percent positive. That's 4.2% positive, which is below the World Health Organization better than the other states in our region, not New Jersey and New York and fairness to them, but certainly better than Pennsylvania who's not on the list. Maryland and Virginia a few of the other new additions to the New Jersey travel Advisory, which just a reminder does not include people traveling between states for work. Revisiting the Archive: Larry Kramer

"I've talked before in this series revisiting the archive about anger. How it can fuel action? How an anger is partnered with love? It can produce a kind of righteous rage that propels us those of us who lived through the AIDS crisis. Know about it. Some of US learned it from Larry Kramer who died this week in Manhattan where he's lived for. Decades Larry was famous for being one of the first billions to sound the alarm during that last epidemic. The one that began forty years ago he was on the front lines even before aids was called AIDS and became a global epidemic at swept away more than thirty million lives before AIDS. Larry was best known for his work as a screenwriter and author but the virus that was claiming so many lives in the political indifference political negligence that greeted it turned Larry into a very public activist. His friends were dying and he felt compelled to do something more than to just bury the dead and mourn their loss in nineteen. Eighty-two Larry co-founded a gay men's health crisis now known as GM five years later he co-founded act up the AIDS coalition to unleash power. Act Up came to be known for its brilliant use of public protests to bring attention to the epidemic by early nineteen eighty nine. When I I met Larry AIDS take in more than sixty thousand lives. Most of them. Gay Men Larry quickly earned a reputation as an uncompromising firebrand with a fierce temper. I'm not proud of it. But that kind of person generally inspires me to run in the other direction. I was more than a little anxious. I approached the door to Larry's apartment in a building that fronts Washington Square Park in New York. City's Greenwich Village. As I said when this episode originally aired I got myself worked up. Nothing I brace myself for a tornado and found the teddy bear. Here's the same. Larry welcomed me into a spacious apartment and showed me into his all white book line living room and I took a seat opposite him across a broad desk as I said at my tape recorder and attach the Mike to his shirt. We talked about how we both had wanted to find a husband early in life and settle down and that led us back in time to Larry's memories as it confused and Unhappy College student in the Early Nineteen fifties. I pressed record interview with Larry Kramer Thursday January twenty six thousand nine hundred eighty nine at the home of Larry Kramer in New York City. Interviewer is Eric. Marcus tape one side one. When I went to Yale I thought I was the only gay person in the world and tried to kill myself because I was so lonely. Did try to What am I think that was fifty? Three was the year my freshman year. Yeah is awful. I mean I do want to go back that far curious because I was a college student on seventy six desperately unhappy. We're at Vassar College. There were there were a lot of gays. They weren't that many people think there were a lot if there were so many gays. Why was I so unhappy? Miserable person and And deaths seemed very appealing at moments during my freshman year when I was dating a woman in making off the man by in life and fifty three must have been much more difficult than seventy six at Vassar. You can even start in shifty. Three Easter I knew I was gay. I think from the day I was born and I think that there have been I. I now know that there were isolate. They were experiences all through before. I even got to Yale. And they were all covert in guilt. Inducing on on everybody's part so the it seemed as if all those early years were spent trying to deny these feelings the feelings would sort of get to strong erupt in and I would have an experience. Which would autumn always make me feel guilty in one way or another and then you put it you become. Sylvia's would come down for a while a week a week or two and Yale was awful. There was a gay bar called parolees. It was awful the time when I finally have the courage to go there. It was only two blocks from campus. But it was a million years away. It was very dark and grey and inside and smokey and and filled with old old older man and I only went the once and somebody picked me up. A car drove for like hours before we found a place that was quiet to do it and then he drove me back where you didn't say a word all of that list of yourself. I eight two hundred aspirin. Oh my God talk about slow and Miss. You must have been pretty miserable to swallow two hundred and yours anymore. Will after you wanted out. Was that who knows. It's a scene. I'll never forget the scene of taking pills the Yup and find you're still better. I didn't wake up. I I went to bed and I got scared and I call. The campus. Police came took me to the hospital and put myself and that was in woke then I fell asleep and I woke up in a room with bars and after grace new haven hospital and there. Was this very unpleasant hospital psychiatrist. Who said all right Mr Cramer? Why did you do it and I go fuck yourself or words to that end he said? I'm now you're not going to be let out of this hospital until you tell us why you did it. And I just had a few rubbed me the wrong way and I wouldn't have told who who knew why I did it anyway. So my brother who's always sort of looked after me came and got me out and he was friends with the dean of Freshmen. My brother had been the before me and And it was you know ordinarily when something like that happen you were shipped off to go join the army really in those days. Yeah and then you come back to Yale and you've grown up but they let me stay. If I went to the University of Coyote. Just his name was Dr Fry Clement Fry. And he was about in the sixties he had silver hair and it was a good looking man he whereas reptiles button down shirt and You just knew that. He cared more about Yale and he ever did about you

"Older classic movies. This week we're going to be talking about Kramer versus Kramer the Nineteen seventy-nine legal drama Divorce drama that as we'll get into was a massive massive hit and it's time and just swept the academy me awards that year We're talking about it in part because of the Academy Awards and doing a little sort of mini Oscar Jag on this show in advance of the Oscars of twenty twenty twenty nineteen whenever you want to call. That's always confusing and talking about the Oscars right from the prior year and of course because of marriage story which in many ways much more ways than even suspected going in before this rewatch echoes. Then I think consciously sites and put some twists on Kramer versus Kramer directed and written by Robert Pinton. Okay so chuckling on the other. Mike is all in the critical vanity. Fair Hello Hi and yeah this movie okay. So there's so many ways to approach it. I think that maybe more than a lot of the movies we've talked about. I I want to spend some time setting this up as cultural object and it's time and as the phenomenon that it was in the culture before we get in to the movie itself Because some of that stuff struck me as really really curious. I mean I was a kid when this came out probably didn't see it in the movie theater and was only vaguely aware that it was a big deal but it was really a big deal in nineteen seventy remember number in the air when I saw the trailer when I watched the vintage trailer had some memory of it being on TV. And being aware of this movie. I think that I was aware where there was a kid who is up for an Oscar because Justin Henry was at the time and I think maybe still the youngest person ever to be nominated for an Oscar engineer. Wallace for peace of the southern wild was younger younger when she made the movie the time it was released and she was nominated. I think because it sat on the shelf for awhile or something. She was older than Justin Henry. So look like a baby at the Oscars. I know it's true. I had to Google Bella so I remember it setting that record and when you're a kid you would notice something like that could be movie stars. But I definitely don't think I saw the movie until I was a bit older anyway anyway. The phenomenon that it wasn't it's time to try to enumerate some of the ways just the hard numbers for one thing. Does she knows the top grossing movie of Nineteen seventy-nine. Not until you told me that's crazy. That's crazy far. It beat the horror which was number two that year by over two million dollars. And if you scroll through it's on the numbers which is a great site for you know learning about box office history first of all. It was a very strong year for movies. There are a lot of movies that we now consider you know. Timeless classics came out in Nineteen Seventy nine in a way that we don't consider Kramer Curses Kramer right. I mean as much as they might be sort of you know respected as an industry milestone of some kind and among them are apocalypse now which was number four at the box office Alien Leeann. The deer hunter came out. Kramer versus Kramer and more money than alien. Yeah that's nice. I mean quite a bit alien doesn't appear on the list until number six knicks and criminals Kramer had much tinier budget than alien right. I mean it was early in dollar budget I think or something at the time. It made a hundred and six million dollars so it hit a huge cultural nerve in ways that we will have to talk about and try to feel our way back into later but just other great movies that year. Being there came came out that year Norma. Rae came out that year. North Dallas forty which. I consider a great movie that I would love to see again. It actually talk about on this show. came out that year and then even just on the pop culture front life of Brian. Breaking away brilliant from nineteen seventy part of reading this was a little bit of nostalgia. Nineteen seventy-nine was a great year for those kind kind of movies that are so quickly disappearing from the landscape now. Mid Budget originals. Sure I'm that kind of movie would not be the highest grossing movie of its year. I mean the closest comparison really isn't one but in terms of size. Relative to our current blockbusters I guess a movie like get out like how much it costs versus how much it made in a statement statement. That was the industry in terms of. You know I mean the thing. Is You sink a lot of money into things like superhero movies. Because internationally you know that they're going to carry their weight whereas whereas a move like get out or this today wouldn't have that kind of guarantee so you don't spend that much money but I still don't think that you know marriage story were released in theaters. I don't know I mean I do. It wouldn't make it wouldn't it wouldn't be the number one movie but I also I don't know how well or not how early in the blockbuster air that was. Yeah sure hours. It only been two years before seventy seven. So this idea of that was a slap had existed jaws had existed but that kind of movie had not become the defining and for us of what made the film industry function. You know first of all says something. About what Hollywood things film for adults is or whether adults are a distinct category of Guardians. Now I mean with superheroes ideas right. Everyone from kids to grownups. Dan Kramer versus Kramer is not that kind of film and also. Yeah we talk about the cultural conversation. Because is as much conversation as I saw about marriage story it was more about the acting and about the gender and all that stuff of of course also a huge difference in the way we think about divorce now versus then and we'll do that but a couple more hard facts about Kramer versus Kramer that are fascinating that it had this rare balance of being both the number one grossing movie at the box office and it basically swept big categories at the Oscars. It won best picture. Best actor best actor best supporting actress for Streep and best adapted screenplay for Robert Betton. Because it's based on this novel by record that had also bestseller so it was sort of like a middle brow juggernaut in so far as it came from a bestselling novel there was a popular ocular and already Oscar awarded writer director. Robert Benton doesn't often was a big star that point Meryl Streep was not a big star movie. Making career had just started a couple years before and and she'd mainly played supporting roles. And if you notice in the opening credits she comes after the title. Classic above the title moments where. You see Dustin Hoffman in Kramer vs Kramer with Meryl Streep Right So. There was definitely not a sense that she was as big box office. Draw as he was at that certainly not. I'm even just looking at the other. You you know nomination cinematography Nestle metros cinematographer. Shot Days of Heaven. I mean enough said. He ended his career and been a great cinematographer right there but but he was associated with truffaut. I who was initially slated to direct this movie. And can you imagine how different Kramer versus Kramer would be Francois. Truffaut had directed it. I mean I don't know exactly how it'd be different. They were different. And it's like fascinating to think about this in terms of like necessarily Is a great name but I also associate him. Accordingly like with people like Malik Malik or with people who are a little bit closer to a kind of new Hollywood era revived as people doing something a little bit against what the studio system was at the time a bit before this. This movie and even director of this movie was one of the Writers and Bonnie and Clyde this is what comes after that somehow generation -ality with that because you've rabid graduate pictures at a revolution or What's the movie raging writers easy bowls? Whenever it's the opposite the easy bowls easy rider? I would be the title of the movie with good. If you've you've read those histories of new Hollywood and that period of the Mavericks Appearing on the People like Warren Beatty and Arthur Penn and Robert Benton. Being one of them you know they were sort of like hippies then then but then when we get to nineteen seventy-nine they're kind of Yuppies and Yuppie the word that is totally contemporaneous with this movie. That I'm sure was used to describe the characters in this move on. I'm sure and I don't know exactly what Robert Ben's social status was at that point or if he had a kid or whatever but he had matured right I mean he was a older closer to being a middle aged man than in his hotheaded days. Is this wonderkid writing the Bonnie and Clyde script and you see that in the movie to you know sort of you know th this change that was occurring in boomer generation basic right. I mean it's such a fascinating near 'cause then you compare that to me like apocalypse. Now which is this Spielberg generation director out in the jungle. Somewhere wasting a lot of studio money Eh. Wasting a lot of time upset. It's just a disaster because they're in the jungle and there's entire stories about this and that to me feels closer.

So we are so excited because we have the fabulous cat. Nat on the phone. Hey guys. I am so. To it. It's so fun. I am so excited to talk to you girls like you have no idea has been counting down till we finally get you guys on here. The feeling is mutual. Well, I have to say so I, I found you on Instagram because I go through my comments, and I saw you guys and then I started stalking, you on Instagram and I just love everything that you to represent what you talk about how then take you guys are, how you're just ruling, the mom space. And it's just been I, I'm just I'm a I'm a total fan. I really am. You're welcome. Kid would say the same thing, but I know maybe one day, we'll get there. Maybe when they're twenty five still appreciate us. Kids is. You know what I mean? I don't know. I'm pretty cool now. But here's the thing, though, that I think is really interesting is even when like I love my mom, mom, I love you. I know you listen to this podcast, you're the best. But here's the thing, even at my age some thirty five years old, I still get annoyed with my mom. I still like I'm so excited to see her and then within five minutes, I'm like she's so annoying. Yeah, yeah. I get that. I think because when you're so close to them. I feel the same way. It's like you're sort of you're just like, oh, I love you. But can you just move away a little, you know what I need, like they want to help you, but they're overstepping it's so funny. It's this relationship, we have with our moms, we need them, but we want them a little bit away. You know. Yeah, I'm so desperate for my mom because I have four kids and she lived on street so badly. Like I probably have four kids because of her look her I probably would have had less, but I knew that I had her around. So I you know, I would have had more and more. It's not about it's not. My husband, but having my mom help. Yeah, it's just it's just such a funny dynamic, because every time like our parents come in town. We're like, okay like we have to pep talk each other up and be like now be nice patients. Nice like say, like, don't get short tempered, and within ten minutes. One of us in the room going like they're so annoying. And then like, but then when they leave it's like, oh, I was really nice. It's really nice. And I wish I was nicer to. And so then it makes me like sad for.

Look at it from a history point of view, Jude law, cheated with an any Ben Affleck ended up with the nanny so Roz del cheated on the you know, it's not the craziest thing ever, exactly. And again, it's kind of Mark said he's like you're putting me in the lion's den. I so you're human who why like a super hot chick around all the time and like playing mommy, and it's not in. It's not that. I'm insecure about it at all. But it's funny. They showed that clip about from the sex in the city when Charlotte donating she's like bouncing with no bra, her boobs up and down. And like that's exactly what I'm talking about. I again, I'm not into. I have my insecure moments. I won't say that I'm not insecure because I definitely have those moments. "Why down with janet kramer and i heart radio podcasts episode to can you believe that and we made it truly wheat yes what a week it's been who've men your thumbs have been really busy i have just been well first of all i just wanna say thank you to everyone that listened to the first podcast and listen to us and honestly made it it was a little bit of trauma that day though i was a had a rough day was released it was really dramatic and i was watching you reply to the thousands of people because being accused of something that you're you're not doing is upsetting in concocting zion what were you what were you thinking so for those of you that didn't go on instagram or catching the drama i so excited obviously i'm like m podcast wind downs out like liu and all of a sudden i started rian comments like you stole your thief and i'm like what like what i'm texting amy the producer at what is going on like what did we steal something like i like this other podcasts ladies says that you know i took her idea and her logo and her i'm like what so i was just so upset i mean and then i started kind of doing some research on this tasha girl and she i mean it was like girls like go after kramer girl i mean they went after me yet it was it was like katie taylor level i mean it was it was a little insane for a while it was intense and it hurt my feelings because i don't like to me the definition of stealing is taking something that you knew about right i didn't steal anything i didn't steal i didn't know about her blog or podcast i mean even if you if you were to search her podcast and i tunes it his come up so even if i heart did you know more research about the name or correlating things that wouldn't have even come up because it's not a registered podcast on itunes right but it's also so different it he says we have you'll have.
