"The morning, David Amy on 5 70 K l i f Welcome back to the bench appear Osho. So fact checkers. You see them? The Snopes. The Politifact. Here is how they operate. Usually if a conservative says something wrong manufacture, which is fine right there. Fact check. They say that is false. Fine. When a liberal get something wrong, then the fact checkers add context and rated mostly true. If a conservative get something right, then the fact checkers say, needs context and say, mostly false. That's how this usually works. Snopes is no different than all the other fact Checkers this way. The fact check that they just performed on daily wire over Alexandra Cozzi, of course, has not being in the Capitol building is truly amazing. So here's what they do, they say claim is Snopes fact check of the whole AOC silliness claim Alexandra Kozel Cortez exaggerated dangerous shoes in during the January 6th 2021 Capital riot and that she quote wasn't even in the Capitol building when the rioting occurred. Okay, well, Those are two claims. They are now fact checking and you are lumping them together so that you can pretend that a factual claim is in non factual claim. There's two claims that the slopes is now fact checking. One is that she exaggerated the danger. That is not fact Checkable and the other is a fact Checkable statement that she was not in the Capitol building when the riding occurred. It is true she was not in the Capitol building when the writing occurred. How do I know this? Because Snopes acknowledges this Here is what Snopes says. First of all, they say it's mostly false. The claim is Alexandra Kozel. Cortez exaggerated the danger she was in during the January 6th 2021 capital riot and that she wasn't even in the Capitol building with writing occurred rating, mostly false. Mostly false. Okay, Here's what they say. What's true? Because you're Cortez wasn't in the main Capitol building where the House and Senate Chambers are located. Wait, What now? So literally your fact checking the question of whether she was in the Capitol building. And then you say it's true. She wasn't in the Capitol building, but you rate the claim mostly false. Here's the best part of this. I love this. So they fact checked one of the tweets that came from daily wire because, of course, the idea here is to keep digging and downgrading conservative sources even when they're telling the objective truth. Here is the daily wire tweet that they called misleading. Why is it misleading? By the way? It's misleading because the conservative side put it out. There is what the daily wire tweeted you ready for this? This is what their fact checking as misleading quote. Report. AOC was not inside Capitol building during breach on January 6th. It's the entirety to tweet report. AOC was not inside Capitol Building during breach on January 6. Now let me read to you again from what Snopes says is true quote because you Cortez wasn't in the main Capitol building. Why it's almost as though it's true when you say it, but misleading when I say it. So you're just fully That's the That's the impression I'm getting from yourselves. Like I'm getting the impression that you fact checkers very often are more interested in fact, checking implications than fact checking facts because you want to come up with a preordained conclusion. And that is that. Anyone who criticizes Alexandra Kozel Cortez isn't just wrong. They are a liar. They're saying untruths. Like that. No, That is not the way any of this work. But this is a dangerous thing that is happening right now in the country, because what you're seeing. I've been talking about this for a while. He's shift from Disinformation to misinformation, right? It's misinformation. You know, it's like it's just it's It's information we don't like. That shift is so dangerous and what the left has been doing. What the fact checkers have been doing with social media sites have been doing is they've been fact checking implications. Whenever you see a fact check that says needs context. You know, this is now a political It's all political exercise, because either a claim is true or it's not. When you say that acclaim. It needs context. That is a claim that I will discuss on the show, right? I mean, that's what the show is for us to give context to various claims. Discussing. But context is a political argument. Their various takes on what context is appropriate to place things in. There's certain things in life that are factually true In certain things in life that are factually false. It is factually true. Alexandra Cozzi Cortez was not in the Capitol building. Then there's the secondary claim, which is did she exaggerate? What happened to her? And there, you have to really examine her emotional response. Was it appropriate for the time? How are other people at the area responding? All of that is a matter of opinion. Instead with the fact checkers do is they wrap all that up in a ball and then call it false? A thing that is objectively true. Which is that she was not in the Capitol building at the time. Now, why am I making a big deal out of this? I made a big deal out of it for a couple of reasons. One. The manipulation of truth actually matters. It matters an awful lot. And when you say that there are fact checking sites that are out there to fact check. And when you say that objective truth is really just your opinion. It is Orwellian kind of stuff, The redefinition of truth to mean anything. I like. And the redefinition of falsehood to mean anything that I disagree with is a dangerous thing. Especially when you have the mechanistic power when you're the institutional power to ram down your version of truth, meaning your opinion on everybody else. It is a dangerous, dangerous thing..

"Surrounds representative Alexandra Cozzi, Oh Cortes de twitch. So we're gonna break this down in all of the task backs because some of what she's saying is true. Much about the media is saying is not true. And this really goes to how our fact checking industry works are fact checking industry here. In the information dissemination space is extraordinarily corrupt. Extraordinarily crapped in today is like a classic story of how our fact checkers get it wrong and they get it wrong deliberately. It's pretty incredible. Okay, so let's begin at the beginning. January 6 riots happened. They're awful. They're evil. They're acts of criminality. Alexandra Kozel Cortez. This week, she put out a 90 minute Instagram video in which she explained her harrowing experiences and It would not be difficult to conclude if you did not know the geography of the area that she was in the Capitol building itself. Now, let's bring up a quick map. Okay, because Capitol Hill actually is a bunch of places. Capitol Hill is not just the Capitol Building. Capitol Hill is a bunch of different places. So, for example, the Capitol Hill built like the actual Capitol building is not. Not all congressional offices are actually located inside the Capitol building. Some of the congressional offices are located in what's called The Longworth Building. Another set of congressional offices are located in the cannon building, Al General Cosmo Cortez. His offices are located in the cannon building. This map. You can see the Cannon House office building that is located all the way down for street and across Independence Avenue. It's a little bit of a walks about 0.3 miles. It's not like right next door, but it's also not super duper far away. There are tunnels that connect the U. S Capitol building to the Cannon House office building. There's also Longworth along with House office building, and that house is a bunch of different congressional offices. There's also the Rayburn House office building, right. All of these are located along Independence Avenue. They're not Part of the Capitol building that part of what's called the Capitol complex, meaning that it includes you know everything in the immediate area that is connected via tunnels. Okay, so I've taken those tunnels they exist. On the day of January, 6th. Cannon House office building was not breached. Okay, The writers did not breach Cannon House office building did not breach the Longworth House office building. They did not breach the Rayburn House office building. They breached the Capitol building itself. So if you watch the IOC's livestream She never says that she's in the Capitol building. So let's be clear about this. She didn't lie and say they choose in the Capitol Building. Some people are saying that she lied. She didn't what she says, is that she felt like she was in imminent fear of her life. Hey, and listen, you're entitled to your feelings doesn't mean your feelings are entirely justified as we'll see when you watch Katie Porter, who was in literally the same office because he has he ran for office. They seem to have very different attitudes about what was going down. That day. There was Alexandra Kozel Cortez, describing her experiences on the day of January, 6th. And so I hide behind my door. Like this, like I'm here. And the bathroom door starts going like this, like the bathroom doors behind me, rather in front of me, and I'm like this, and the door hinges right here. And I just here. Where is she? Where is she? And, um this was the moment where I thought Everything. Woz. Over, Okay, And then she continued, and it turns out that the person who was banging on her door was actually a Capitol police officer. Now we know from the day off the Capitol police officers were in fact getting people to leave the Cannon House building and moved to safer locations. But Cosmo Cortez what she said when he should continue on in that video. She said that after the Capitol Hill police officer came into the office said quote Things weren't adding up. Like she added. There was no partner there and no one was yelling. He wasn't yelling like this is Capitol police. He was looking at me and all this anger and hostility. She said. Did he not say he was Capitol police on purpose? Was he trying to actually put us in a vulnerable situation? All these crazy thoughts go through your mind are some officers safer than others because they have white sounding names or male sounding names. Okay, so so this is the way that she tells the story. Okay. Now she heads on over to Katie Porter's office, which is right next door. So here is Katie Porter on MSNBC, describing the exact same set of circumstances except from her perspective. First, you leader. She saw me. She and we wave that went into my office in a couple seconds later, she knocked And she said no. Could we? Could we come in? And I said, of course, and she began. Tonto dealer staffer was trying to describe what had happened. And Alex is really usually like I'm family, only polite and very personable, and she wasn't even really talking to me. She was opening up. Doors and I was like, Can I help you like what are you looking for? And she said, I'm looking for where I'm going to hide. Okay, So here's the thing. Katie Porter's reaction when Alexandra Kozel Cortez person is not okay, Let's get in here. Let's bury our up all the doors. They're out there. They're coming. It's like What's going on now? What are you doing? Okay. So is Katie Porter reacting inappropriately? I don't think so. In fact, it was. He describes how she walks in. I believe and Katie Porter sipping coffee. Right, And so and then Katie Porter is being told by IOC. I'm looking for a place to hide. And he was he was saying, I'm afraid to die today. I always wanted to be a mother and then apparently, AOC didn't have sneakers. She's wearing high heels. And so she said to Katie Porter, do you have any sneakers and Katie Porter wins one of her staffers and had her give her her sneakers, which like Imagine you're that staffer..

"Regular programming already in progress on 8 90 w. L s. She keeps insisting that she was in the Capitol building because, in fact she was part of the Capitol complex. Right? This is what she tweets out. She tweets out? Well, you know, guys, I mean, it's connected by tunnels. She says. This is the latest manipulative take on the right there, manipulating the fact that most people don't know the layout of the Capitol complex. We were all on the Capitol complex. The attack wasn't just on the dome. The bombs that trump supporters planted surrounded our offices to Okay, so a couple of things there one We have yet to find the evidence of who actually planted bombs she could make an assumption was Trump supporters, but that actually is not publicly available information so that in and of itself is misleading information. When she says that we're a part of the Capitol complex, and therefore they were trying to attack the Capitol complex in general. Nancy Mace was on the same floor. She says the writers did not breach the building. Reporters at the time, said the writers did not breach that building again. This is not to say that you couldn't have been justified or or at least she couldn't have felt legitimately and authentically in danger. Again, People reacted crisis in different ways. What she is now saying, which is that? Oh, yeah. You know, people are saying I wasn't in the Capitol building. How dare they? Well, I mean where you were her. You're not in the in the Capitol building. It's called the Capitol Building. It's not called the Capitol complex when people say The riders stormed at the Capitol building. They mean the Capitol building like a building because They don't mean the complex, right? I mean, so so she is now. Now she's misleading. So she puts out a this email and she says, We need your help. Here's what you can do to help us combat this campaign of disinformation and others in the future. Scan your social media to find post with his misleading information, especially those using the trending hashtag. Mm hmm. It's funny how Alexandra Kozel Cortez is her emergency mode kicks in when she was training for the wrong reasons on Twitter. As somebody who transcends what are frequently like once every three weeks. Once every month. I can tell you that the best thing you can do with the Twitter friend is basically ignore it. It's pretty much the best thing. You could do the twitters one, but she is. Instead, she says she wants all of her followers to basically spam, Facebook and Twitter and get a bunch of stuff taken down, which is not a great look for a seat in Congress person. She says. Don't tweet any hashtag yourself because we don't want them to spread further identify any post that are threatening or harassing and use the built in report features to flag them for the moderators, Facebook and Twitter both have built in tools for reporting post and tweets that break the rules. The sad thing is that a lot of damage has already been zone. People have already been misled and radicalized. They believe the lies to a point where their hatred could someday boil over and violence s. So now she's going to say that if you Point out that she was not in the Capitol building itself. You are one of the kinds of people who distributes information that ends with the January 6th riots. Mean that's that's pretty manipulative stuff right there. She says. We can keep calling out Photoshopped tweets, fake news articles Misleading post when we see them, Okay, now, here is where the fact checkers get involved. And there many things that could be fact check here. So, for example, you could fact check whether she was actually in the Capitol building at the time. Or you could fact check whether she lied to the shoes in the Capitol building at the time, Right? The answer on the first issue is not in the Capitol building at the time and two I don't see evidence that she lied about being in the Capitol building at the time, and both of those things can simultaneously be true. But that is not what the fact checkers do. Because the fact checkers are just democratic operatives. They're just completely full of crap. So here is how the fact checkers do their business. And so here is the fact check from Snopes is a perfect example of how the fact checkers are just Just lie by implication, and sometimes openly. It's pretty amazing. Okay, so Snopes puts out a piece on this whole silly debacle. Right here is what they say Did AOC exaggerate the danger she was in during the capital Riot. Okay, So first of all, you can fact check that. Was literally no way to fact check that particular question, because that is a matter of subjective opinion. Hideyoshi exaggerate the danger she was in during the capital Riot. So you could say No, She didn't exaggerate the danger that she was in during the capital, right? Because the capital writers were violently. We're looking for Congress people, theoretically, they could've gotten in and they could hurt her. Or you could say no, She absolutely exaggerated the danger she was in considering no one breached that building. There were other Congress. People on that level. None of them are acting like a OSI Did. So maybe she did exaggerate. There's really no way to fact check that right? That is a subjective matter of opinion. Whether Alexandra Cozzi records has exaggerated the physical danger that use in in the account that she told of what was going on. Again. They're fact checkable things that it stops could do here. They don't do that. They framed the question as a fact check about emotional response. You can't fact check emotional response, Which is why I have said over and over and over. That a OSI did not line right? That is a fact Check. AOC did not lie. You may think that her emotional responses off kilter that does not. That does not mean that she lied right there. Ways to fact, check that our objective That's not what the fact checkers are doing. Soap, says Ailes. He was targeted with another round of bad faith smears after giving emotional firsthand account of her experiences during the capital riot. Coming up. So he's Snopes. In fact, checkers we're gonna get to the rest of that fact check in just a second because it just shows how.

"So there's a certain irony to the fact that the Alexandra Kozel Cortez is of the world are upset. Now that Robin Hood, they want more people to be able to trade in the free market. Weird. They're socialists. The reason they're upset is because they see this is a sort of French revolution class conscious moment. That is what they see this as right. The hedge fund guys being taken down by the little guys, and that's good and we don't want the little guy's taken down that way. I have a broader point. I don't really like that kind of stuff. But I do like is the idea that people can trade as they see fit. Have a broader principle to protect Which is head fun. Guys were a lot of short and you should be allowed to short hedge fund. Guys are allowed to engage in short squeezes. You should be allowed to engage in short squeezes it is that simple. It is a neutral principle. I do not think the neutral principle applies to people who are who are conveniently joining this clause from the left. I think that a lot of people conveniently joining the free market cause from the left are doing so specifically because they like In this instance This is targeted at hurting Wall Street generally. That was my sort of objection. Yesterday as I was pointing out that what this really does it undermines confidence in markets generally. But that said, it is not criminal. They're allowed to do it and the market's gonna make up for that, because that's what markets do. They just So they can be the Alliance of Convenience remains an alliance of convenience. But better than not having an alliance of convenience. I suppose CNN's Poppy Harlow again, not somebody who I would generally think of as a free market here. Was asking. How is it not rigging the game if you can just cut off Reddit investors anytime you don't like what they're doing. His folks feel like this whole thing is rigged against them, And this is their chance with social media their chance to actually have a voice. How is it fair for them then? I mean, I I read Read. It is saying, Look, we want to protect our investors. But by the way, if you cut them off from making the moves that they want to make with their own money, for whatever reason they want to make it and you don't cut off the hedge funds, and you don't cut out Wall Street. How is that not rigging the game. That's exactly exactly what people are complaining about this morning. Okay? And I complain is it happens to be exactly right. There's not Robin Hood anymore. Now it's just the sheriff of Nottingham. Right? It is just taking money. From the common man and making sure that the hedge funds get what they need. Now Robin Hood is going to say is right were forcibly selling your stocks and a massive profit. How is that a lost you and the answer is the real reason that any of these people are doing this is not because they want to make a massive profits because they wanna screw the hedge fund guys. I mean, that's that's really what this is about. And they have every right to do that. I mean, I grew the motivation. May think that it's wrongheaded they've ever regular. It's a free country out of the same standards when it comes to free markets, as I do when it comes to free speech. I may not like what you say, but you have the right to say it. I mean, not like how you trade, but you do, in fact, have the right to trade So a little bit of a neutral principle, I think would go a long way here. There will be an investigation and like I want to know did anybody in the Biden white. There were rumors flying around yesterday from insiders that Robin Hood that people in the White House had called up Robin Hood and tried to exert pressure. If that's true, that should be a massive scandal. It's true that there are folks in the government who are calling up A private company like Robin Hood and telling Robin Hood to essentially cut off its own users. That's crazy, Okay, and that needs to be fully investigated. I would expect a congressional investigation on that. By the way, if it turns out that Citadel decided that they were going to go to Robin Hood and pressure Robin Hood into cutting off their own users. That seems like market manipulation and a fairly high level probably violates the law. So the really bad thing that happened over the past 48 hours is not these these jokers burning the money, right? The really bad thing that happened over the past 48 hours is the reaction to that, as always in America, or as usual in America. Even when something happens that a lot of people don't like the reaction tends to be significantly worse than the original action. Even if you don't like the original ash, I know that a lot of people who did that a lot of feedback on yesterday's show. People were very angry that it wasn't like fully on board with the with the giant attempt to take down the hedge fund, guys, I get it. I get where you're coming from. We can disagree on that. What I think we all agree on is that it is deeply wrong, deeply wrong for Robin Hood or any other app to de platform its own users because they don't like how the users Are engaging in free market transactions. That's wild. Okay. Meanwhile, Janet Yellen, who's the Treasury secretary? It turns out the cheers you around $810,000 in speaking fees from the hedge fund that bailed out one of the primary losers in the recent Gamestop frenzy, according to Fox News. "We've seen some professional athletes. Those who bring in big money branch out into ownership after their playing days are over. Mario lemieux has won. Please let me know but Victor Martinez has a chance to be something of a trailblazer and we are fortunate enough to welcome Victor Martinez for the First Time. Here to investigate. What was it like for you that day? It was crazy it was crazy man with a lot of stuff that we were just praying that you know he likes the door he likes the dirt and then you know I remember having my wife be right beside on my right and You know the final stretch. One Carlos was very very disappointed about his performance. He was you know what I'm saying. I'm sorry I don't know what happened. That was like don't worry about it. I mean we have a great time. You know we have a lot of people came to us and say that king a year is a terrific guy. He got a racer grass so well we decided to give him a chance on on on turf grass and we put him on a mile rate. You got a king gear. Mouse can gear midway on. The turn is opened up. A six length advantage gear comes into the stretch with a seven length. Lead Kozel Listrik Joe. Second third but king who they gotta catch can gear ball popular. Victory here can gear them out by about eight legs so we were like okay. I think he he liked turfing. You know we put him on another race. These these time was the steak then. He came third. So you know He. He lost the race in the final four lawn. Something like that and You know he he make another another big race but I still have my dream united. See how my dream from like my Kentucky Derby horsing. I told the trainer one time I told him Carl listen. I think he deserved one. More shot on dirt. So let's put him on one more time and but Lisa he's not gonNA raise any those leader races. Let's put him on a raise. That point to the Kentucky and he looked at me and he was agreed. We put him on the temporary. We you know we went out there to try. Try Him on again. And then we came out with spider it every now you talked about your trainer Juan Carlos Ave line. You're rider Sammy. Camacho are not that well known on the national thoroughbred racing scene they like you are Venezuelan. Had you thought about going with a more well-established trainer and rider to prepare for the Kentucky? Derby Nope nope they put him in the Kentucky every day going with him to the Kentucky Derby. That's how it works for me.

Video games went from virtual currency to real money, and it changed the business

"Video game makers want you to pay and then keep on paying from American public media? This is marketplace. Tech demystifying the digital economy, I'm Ali would. This week is e- three the huge video game trade show and people spend something like one hundred and thirty eight billion dollars on games in two thousand eighteen according to various research, and the game industry has been growing, in double digits for a decade, which is almost unheard of part of the reason is way more people playing games. Mostly, thanks to mobile gaming, but also people spend a lot more money in games on virtual currencies and virtual goods like digital outfits called skins upgrades, or accessories v lay Donna verte is an economic sociologist, at the Oxford internet institute. He studies digital economy for a long time games, had their own complex economies that were entirely virtual. And then a big shift happened, then we had in the ninety s the first massively multiplayer online role playing games that gave rise to players trading virtual goods inside the game for real money. So he could buy. By a virtual Kozel for something like a thousand dollars. And now, we are in a situation where this sort of a virtual item is obviously, a very major source of revenues and conversely, we're moving away from the more complex player to player virtual Konomi. It's not without controversy though. Right. Yes. So there was controversy around pay to win. Which means if you're used to the idea that after you've paid for entry into the game, then everyone plays an equal merits than this idea that you could pay to get some kind of an advantage in the game was obviously very controversial. Because now suddenly, you have real world, economic inequality seeping into this game economy, which was meant to be a sort of escape. Right. A lot of the incentives now around these sort of. The basic economic decisions by this, and you will look or have a lot to do with status. Yes. I think that's absolutely accurate. So originally in the early noughties when people started paying money for virtual items clothes for virtual characters and whatnot. There were a lot of people wondering why would anyone pay real money for something as useless as that? And then we studied that topic, and we found that people spent real money in virtual items for the very same reasons, stay spend real money on any items know branded handbags and whatnot. They are symbols and markers that are used in showing status, but also membership of a particular group or community or subculture or, or drawing a distinction to other people, and these are the main drivers of consumer behavior weather in the virtual economy are outside of it right now. To become an insult in the fortnight world to refer to swell in, in the real world also to refer to someone as a default. Poso although little norm. Core has has been fashion. Trends could be a statement in itself. Reclaim your digital identity by saying, I'm not default. I'm norm core. That's amazing. Is I hope that that happens? Is it a little disappointing? I mean maybe showing my age, but it, it, it does feel like kind of a bummer that, that those of us who grew up in those early days of, you know, like you mentioned eve, online, or, or these, just like incredibly complex, digital economies that were so beautifully constructed and well thought out, it's like Lord of the rings versus you Nickelback or something. It just feels a little it feels a little disappointing that the, the economics are so simplistic now so blunt force. Well, the number of people playing games playing digital game. So has increased. So those more complex and evolved virtual economies haven't really gone anywhere, you know, they're still there. They're just for certain audiences. And then you have a big. Bigger audiences that are enjoying experiences that are more accessible for people who don't necessarily have so much, for instance time to invest into grappling with a complex virtual economy. So in that sense, I'm not disappointed. The potentially positive thing about this whole trend around spending more money on virtual goods in virtual currencies. Is that the environmental impact of virtual consumption could potentially be very low? You can purchase new items and discard your old virtual boots or whatnot, and you're not increasing your carbon footprint in any way. The only thing is, if you if we keep upgrading our hardware at the pace, we're upgrading obviously that has a big carbon footprint, but the game content and self, you can spend any amount of money on game content without necessarily increasing your carbon footprint than I think that's quite interesting. So the. More virtual, we can turn our economy in that sense. The more we can potentially decouple consumption from environmental impacts be left on a versa, is an economic sociology at the Oxford internet institute, now, generally speaking gamers are fine within game micro transactions when the game is free or cheap and the purchases are mostly cosmetic but research shows most people don't want to have to pay to win.

"Demonstrations in Moscow and elsewhere yesterday over the Russian government's plan to impose restrictions on the internet. I asked Moscow based reporter Charles Maynes. What exactly is going on? They had legislation that's working its way through the Duma the parliament here that would allow the federal authorities to take control over connection points chokepoints linking Russia to the global internet and explained here is a defensive measure intended to defend Russia's digital sovereignty as they like to say amid any possible cyber attack against critical infrastructure. Yes. So basically, we're talking like a Russia Wide Web instead of a worldwide web in the Kremlin would kind of filter everything. That's right. It's sort of like a national kill switch to isolate at the Russian internet the Russian portion of the internet from the global internet under some kind of attack. The problem is the critics say this is essentially like the great Chinese firewall something that would separate Russia, and obviously present some options for the authorities to crack down on opposition. And alternative forms of thought in Russia. So how Russians responding to this idea of basically, a Russia Wide Web this giant filter that the Kremlin would put on the internet was you can imagine it's kind of mixed. I think it depends a little bit on your age. This demonstration yesterday was of course, mostly overloaded with younger Russians, and there's a sense that essentially this laws being driven by people who grew up in the seventies. Whereas the people defending Russia's internet freedoms are people in their twenties. So we have just an age gap here going on. So we're about to hear from one of the lead organizers of the protests yesterday, a libertarian activists name Mikhail swept of how old is he? Yeah. So Macau set of he's thirty four. He's not he's with the libertarian party in Russia. He was one of the co organizers of yesterday's event, and he's pretty passionate about what he thinks is this mono. Goodell logo healing. You got. Kozel. So let me saying here is that the authorities meaning the Kremlin have had just no new avenues for dialogue with society. And would essentially that gives the option for people is just to take to the streets. He says, look, you know, they can arrest me. They can throw me in jail or the opposition leader Alexei navalny, for example. But other people will come following me and other people will come in my wake were even angrier. And so so this is another way a tragedy for Russia now when it comes to Vladimir Putin he's seen as a bit of a dinosaur when it comes to the web does he really not get it. Or does he want us all to think that he doesn't get it? So how could Russia possibly be so sophisticated and cyber right? You know, Putin is known as the guy who doesn't like the internet, he's openly called it a project of the CIA. He's very very suspicious of it. And he became more suspicious of it back in twenty eleven when you had street protests throughout the Russian capital and other cities in Russia, which he felt was used where the internet was used as the key kind of organizing platform. And so since then you've seen. Kremlin launch a whole series of actions to try and sort of reclaim the cyberspace. These are repressive laws in terms of publishing. We just had a law for example last week, which essentially bans fake news. According to the Russian authorities and forbids insulting official institutions online. So essentially that can be seen as total censorship depending on how it's enforced, and so you have all these laws that are designed to reclaim the cyberspace by the Russian authorities, Ken, this particular set of restrictions on the web this Russia Wide Web. If you will they actually work technically speaking, I mean, Russia tried to crack down on telegram and failed at that. Exactly. And I think that's one of the debates here, we see in Moscow, certainly on Sunday, which is that some people, you know, there were fifteen thousand people showed up maybe a bit more about on the streets there again, mostly younger Russians, but you have to think that younger Russians in masses would come out if they really felt that the internet was going to be locked off. And they can point to this effort to take down. Telegram, this messaging app service was launched by young Russian named Pablo. Dura of the Russian authorities tried to shut that down and failed and with this Lou law. There's also a lot of debate is how well they could actually enforce any efforts to isolate the Russian internet to shut off these chokepoints as they're called because fundamentally you compare something like China where there have maybe two three main entry points for fiber cables will in Russia has a fully-developed internet environment. And so they're they're literally ninety one hundred cable, so it's much harder to enforce this. But a lot of people like stripped off we heard from earlier, you know, he's he warns that it's it's a little bit careless to just expect that the Russian authorities will fail in their efforts. Reporter Charles Maine's in Moscow. Thanks as always Charles. Appreciate it. Thank you. Mark..
