"Maybe eleven minutes but do you have any more before. We'd lay that final question on well. Yeah i wanted to talk about you. Know what your definition of retirement is you know. Do you ever see like i know. I've heard some people say retirement to me is really financial freedom I don't know that. I would ever not work but just the ability to do what i wanna do. I wanna do it to a certain degree on kinda curious for you you know what is your definition of retirement for yourself. It's a great question you know i already. You know like i've got. I worked really hard. But i got a great team. I i could not show up to work for a week and pretty much things would be fine right in so i already in a situation where i kinda do what i wanna do for. Most of the time and i don't i don't really know my exit strategy to really good question. I know that. I can't imagine me not. I love martial arts. I love to be around it. I love the whole doja life. You know like. I love Just hanging out on the train with people hanging out of the matt afterwards and talk and shop and you know and and i love talk with school owners about the business. This is what i know you know. And i really don't have any other hobbies about a couple of years back. My wife bought me some golf clubs and because we live right by a golf course and and she got me a private lesson and euros fine. It was fine. But i felt like i was cheating on martial arts like i hope nobody see me kind of cheating you get on the same. Just didn't feel right to me. And this is what i love to do at you know and i tried other hobbies you know. I do some wiggling and carbs some knives and i do some kanji. It's all martial arts related stuff you know but honestly i'm not. The guy wants to sit around. Watch netflix all day. So i think the definition of financial freedom. Doing what i wanna do. I wanna do it. I just one thing that i'll probably do more of In the next few years as more travel this not. Although i love doing seminars travel for the sake of travel most travel. I do like. I'll sneak in a day or two open if i have a family member with me when i'm somewhere but it's usually focused around to seminars and like i wanna do. I wanna go much. Ups you're going to bring my kids. That's their president for called graduation. Were to that next year. So you know that kind of thing is to me. It's really not about stuff. It's about experiences that's more to me. Yeah that's actually. My goal in life is well to spend some time within a culture whether it be japan for a month or italy. For a month and livingston. Small quiet non or village and just experienced life. Because my dad was a retired cop he passed away. A few years back and By the way. I loved seeing your videos with your dad. It literally brings a tear to my eye. You know he's blocking doing things in My dad was the same way when he passed away. I had no idea that he takes. Every one of my articles rewritten the at amid scrapbooks. In just pulled him out the other day. But i love your video so keep the keep doing that. I know what's interesting is that anytime. I'm not feeling love on facebook. I just get my dad in there. That's all i gotta do so so. Our final question is is not morbid in any way but spiritual and The question is so. Let's say on your deathbed or in your funeral. What you want to be remembered for. What would you love to have. People had remembered mastered decor four. And to say about you. What is the ultimate goal if you did that..

"Kovar. It is on the decline averaging under 15,000 cases a day across America the past week get another decrease of nearly 30% from the prior seven day average. And CDC director Dr Rochelle Walensky says there has been a decrease of 83% in hospitalizations since January. 9th of this year and vaccinations are a big reason more than 300 million shots in arms so far. In some parts of the country where more people are wary of the vaccines. Covid's not fading, It's spiking. Honestly, it has been. It's been a perfect storm of things, but unfortunately, I think a perfect storm that could happen anywhere. Dr. Kendall Gino is medical director for the Linn County Health Department in Missouri. Or they had their worst covid surge. Yet. In May, Lin in a neighboring county topped the New York Times tracker for most cases per capita in the country in mid May. We experienced a spike in the number of people that were experiencing covid symptoms and who then subsequently tested positive. And since that time cases have been going up until, fortunately recently, it looks like things are maybe leveling out, but we had active cases that were higher than any that we had ever experienced in the pandemic. This hit all around the same time as graduation. What's happening and graduation part reads and then to top it all off. We also found out that we actually did and and do have the delta variants of the Covid 19. The coronavirus that's have been known as the Indian variant. But now it's going to Delta variant, which is more infectious. And so all of those things combined, plus Are vaccinations rate. And when county especially and and Livingston as well, especially in the age group under 50 is pretty pretty abysmal. It's pretty low. A lot of Lot of folks who are elderly and a lot of the long term care facility. Residents got vaccinated, but but a lot of folks lot of vaccine hesitancy and and individuals under 50. I think that all combined to cause the spike that we're currently see him. All right. There's a lot to go through their Let's begin with how this came up in the middle of May. You guys had to be surprised, right? I mean, April. Were you seeing any cases anymore? Was it was Covid was gone pretty much, right? Yeah, pretty much yet. There were several weeks several weeks, maybe even a month, which absolutely zero case. And suddenly it comes out of nowhere. Yeah. Up in in one week, We had 21 active cases. Um and then from there by the next week, we had 85. Then we topped out at 202 104, which is about one active case for every 60 people in Linn County. Alright, because you're pretty rural area, right? You don't have a lot of residents. So about 12,000 you say so that's follow one out of 60. So if you do the math on that That means that would be the same. If this was America, not just Linn County. That would be 5.5 million active cases. Which is really something considering we've only had. I shouldn't say only, but we've had 33 million the entire pandemic. So this is a large number for you guys. And obviously you were surprised. So what did you do about it? Sure. So you know, we we very much made the a lot of the then the same recommendations we had been making all along which, unfortunately or you know as far as masking like not gathering in large groups, making sure that people are isolated and quarantining appropriately. But I'll tell you, it's a really hard sell. When every time people turn on the radio or the TV. It's like, Oh, you know Covid's improving like, well, the wait not here and then you have the CDC guidance. Also in May. That was like, Look, you don't even have to wear masks anymore outside and all that kind of stuff. So you're counter you are countering a very difficult message to defeat. Absolutely and and not that that was in context in the country. Not that that was wrong Advice. It's just whenever your case counter as high as they were in Linn County. We had to have other guys. You know, we just said Look, you even if you're vaccinated, you should wear a mask right now, because the cases are just that high at this point, and we were seeing lots of Lots of what appeared to be reinfection. People that were that tested positive for covid back in September, October, and we're sick. Improved did great. No problem and then became ill again. Uh, you know, in May and again tested positive No. Is that do you know why that is? I mean, I know there were a lot of people talking last year. People who were like who wanted to just have these covid parties. Get it over with. Get yokels get infected, And then you'd be immune forever. People were thinking. Is this that Covid was still in their body or they actually got a new infection. And therein is the that's That's a fantastic question. And we don't have the capability as rural, tiny rural health department to be able to tell you that because what it comes down to is that what you have to do is to prove reinfection. You really kind of have to have to test them and figure out what kind of covid they had the first time, so you have to actually type it the first time they get infected. And then you have to type it the second time to and then no one. We're not doing that. Of course. No one really is. And so yeah, it only it looks like they're that we're seeing reinfection. Thankfully, no one has died yet from this particular from this particular wave. We have had roughly about the same amount of hospitalizations. So as as previous and some ICU states as well. I think the biggest difference so Is that we have seen that really in our little you know, tiny populations. The vaccination is working because we're not seeing any so far nursing home cases like we had in November and December because those populations Really vaccinated. And so even though we've had employees accidentally exposed residents who we haven't seen that infection, then take hold and, of course, just like in most of the country, That's Back in November, December. That's where we saw many of the death coming from. We're from our long term care facility. Okay, So these people who were infected in May and maybe in early June They are all unvaccinated. And so or most, is that better to say most the vast majority I don't know. There may have again for patient privacy, and all of that. I believe we have had At least a case of a vaccinated individual that did that did then test positive for Covid. But most the vast vast majority Aurand back to Dr Gino said Vaccination rates were abysmal for those 50 and under Here are the numbers as of Monday. Inland County, Missouri, about a third of the total population has had at least one covid vaccine dose nationwide. That number is almost 52%. And if most of the elderly there are vaccinated, it shows how many younger people in that county Don't want the shot, so the recent Covid surge has changed a few minds to some degree, We have seen upticks in vaccinations in the area. Think when there's a clear and present danger, then it's a little a little easier to go ahead and make the jump to get that vaccine. Um as far as reasons. Well, goodness, I mean, it really varies depending on depending on the person that you talked to. Some folks have what I would nicely say sound like somewhat fringe beliefs about some concern about Oh, no, even microchips, or, you know things like that being right being implanted all the way to less fringe ideas just of concerns of reaction to the vaccine or but they feel like it's too new or things like that. All right. It was an unproven is an unproven Vaccine it right. Only emergency authorized. Uh and all of that, Um, exactly what do you do You try to sway them or change their opinions. I, You know, To be honest, I kind of first I read the person and my relationship with them, right, you know, and and then I do my best from there and and we talk about How you know when I got the vaccine as a health care provider back in December, you know, I can say that. Okay, Maybe it was a little bit. Maybe it was a little bit risky at that time, because only you know, 110,000 less than 100,000. People have had it and and only for a few months, But now, But now we've had Millions of people who have had it and and it's been months and months and months, you know, and and so you know, I just tell them like for me. I'm about as sure of this vaccine as I can possibly be about anything in medicine at this point, you know, but it's but it does seem to work and and with very, very minimal side effect. What about kids? How many of these infections were or Children and did it? And how did it affect school and know you talked about graduations? Up, so it would have impacted school a lot because we did see several in, um in some kiddos in Truell age. Certainly in high school age kids we saw, um Are part of this spike. Um, really? Those school ended right around the time that the spike really hit because school let out. I think a week after we saw that initial 20 case jump all of a sudden, so we probably would have been in the situation where we might have even had just The simple fact that people being in quarantine and staff being on quarantine and all that it would have negatively impacted are the school but again, it was already let out to the summer. So at this point, you sound optimistic that you hope that that wave has.

We're kind of goes along with you alley Where i don't know some some event in the industry were you said that well. Why don't we talk about stats or whatever. It was the win. Whenever i would people would ask me to submit my topics for the maya super show Eventually they stopped asking me to go there. Because i kept saying. Why don't we teach people the basics you know. And then they were like we want something new that you know. Of course there could be sellable. Or whatever and i'm like how about new becomes old. And you know we teach them the very basics at run their stats know their numbers outta signed people up you know cetera et cetera. It was never sexy enough for them so have and you almost. Can't i run into this when we have events. You almost can't blame them because they know they gotta give a presentation to the people out there that want that new thing. You're like 'cause like i. I tell you what you know. I've got you know elvis. Someone asks elvis. They said hey elvis. You can only play three chords on the guitar. And he goes. Yeah but i can bang the hell out of them for me. And i'll give different y- you don't sound but but because so when we're doing i do occur convent Week make it a point to try to dress up the title because we know that's what people want to hear something different and if there is It's not there's nothing wrong with new information out there right in new perspectives but at the core. "We'll be able to use that forever now and are you even with people that are online you know and only wanna do it online charge. Seen amount right yeah. Our story tribe were messing with the price point. But one of the things as you guys know that we very quickly. We didn't want to win when we first started going to zoom year in march or april of last year. I did not wanna draw our rates. Because i was worried about how long it was going to it. Plus it's just as much work for us to zoom class is more work and and so we were really adamant about not doing it. And i'm so glad we didn't. You know i knew guys that. Cut their price in half and a right or or one of my friends didn't charge anything for zoom classes because he was going to be a month brought somebody in the bank. I just won't charge anyway this month than eight months later. You get the deal so we just decided right out of the gate. We were not gonna address. We're going to charge full rates I think going forward with. Just adjust a virtual program. Our test of shown that our price point might be little high if we're trying to market to someone that lives in chicago to join our program online for you know but but we're still figuring out but one but we right now because we have so many of our local members still on zoom. We're not messing with the price yet. Yeah it makes sense. I mean look at you. Join a coach. Tony robbins or somebody like that. That's a motivational speaker. Were teaching you how to do webinars. Or whatever they're gonna reggie top dollar see and that's all virtual in half the time. It's not even live. So i don't see why we're giving a live class why we would discount prices and like you said it's way harder to teach on zoom than it is hundred percent and you know and it's just our job is we have to sell the visa bees to the people that are doesn't matter that think it's worth as much we gotta make sure that we find a way to make sure convey that information to our student. Body are potential students yelled. And that's that's where. I think the is or any issues and i was gonna ask you. What are what. I would call. Maybe some stick strategies that you are using online to keep people engaged. I think first and foremost you know you guys are probably familiar with the instructor's creed teach this class. Because that's most important class will ever teach our patients who lead by example. Think it for the online. Climate teaches the wrong word. It's orchestrate is the right word. What i mean by that is is that you know you guys have been teaching a long time. You can like show up on the mat. If you didn't plan class you look around there. You figured out it works. It's a good class but with zoom man you gotta like sit down and think all right. Here's my curriculum. i can't do this. They can't do that. they can't do this. Normally we do this you know. How can i make this class. Amazing when these are these are the. This is my limits and you can. It's just a matter taken enough time to plan it out right. And so we've got really creative with as as everybody else you know with with with how to keep people engaged in what props were using and and and then we kind of do that like amongst our team. We share that every week. And so we've got actually in our resource library for our staff..

So the truth is, you know, we all have the potential to get a little down at times, right, but the people with depression And this is an important differentiation. They don't feel like they can turn it off. It's not within their voluntary control. They can't just snap out of it is the channel. You know if you're talking about Nick that there are thought that they're chewing on the can't seem to move past. And when depression hits it feels as though everything stops our motivation, our energy, our passion and even our joy and everything starts to feel overwhelming. Right so you don't have the energy can't muster the energy for sort of normal daily tasks. For patients of mine. This has been getting the mail that becomes an opening the mail sorting the mail, brushing my teeth, taking a shower, getting up off the couch to begin my day things that people can do you know with ease. But when depression hit those things become enormous challenges and depression leaves people feeling pretty isolated in often. Very alone in their pain, cycling and recycling through this sort of negativity, preoccupation about their future about their past about their relationships on ghost. Importantly, improbably, what's the most devastating is themselves. They often feel like failures. Exactly. You know, if you it's so true, because when people are often times by themselves or when they find themselves withdrawing, they just don't want to be around people because everything for that everything is work. The communication that getting up to sorting the mail to talking to someone, so it's just better. It's almost like this. Almost a A default, saying that we often times will go into him. We're in this depression, where we just simply withdraw ourselves wanted to be by ourselves. Unfortunate part one. The most unhealthy ways of coping with depression. Is that withdrawal and that I said, we'll talk about that later on in the show. You know how unhealthy that is. Not to mention the unhealthy thinking that goes along with it, but I think it's It's so organic for these folks, too, because when you think about what you feel when you're depressed And you go out into the world and you see everyone smiling and happy and talking about what they're doing, and you can't relate to any of it. Because you're in your own state of despondency. It begins to feel like an emotional disconnect. And even though they're surrounded by people, they can often feel the most alone because where they are alone is in the emotional connection. They're not sharing how they're really doing, and they can't connect to how you're doing so there is a really big disconnect. On that seeps in with depression, right and that going back over saying earlier. You just end up faking it to make it You just kind of go through the day. You're you're not really enjoying your life to simply enduring your life. And the problem with it is that if there's not some sort of Self check if there's not some sort of an awareness of it. Unfortunately, this thing could be prolonged for weeks months and you could see that and in a situation like this now what we're doing with Kovar 19 where for many of us were being forced to be socially isolated. It just magnifies. And almost is that in Paris into it already difficult situation because you're already in withdrawal because of a pandemic? Absolutely So depression is at we know right if we're experiencing this sort of clinical ST depression. And really, you know what I would say is, it's more of a broad, somewhat poorly defined diagnostic category. We have mild levels of depression. Of course, there's been major depressive disorder. And then of course, there is Bipolar disorder, which is a little bit different. We're not going to get into that today, but Then embraces a daunting range of symptoms from cognitive and physical lethargy. You know, life is just gloomy, but life becomes very predictable and monotonous. There's a loss of concentration and the loss of sort of connection to one's purpose. Um, and pessimism kind of takes over about just about everything. Everything is filtered through the lens of what's the point in the feelings of worthlessness really tend to set in, and there's almost an unrelenting sadness. That prevents us from really connecting to anything that we're doing, and even what you'll notice is the way people move when they're depressed is sluggish and heavy and slow. It reflects what they feel on DeSoto and then even when they're trying to relax, they feel agitated and irritated, so they're actually even in rest of states not experiencing rest. So there's there tired all the time, physically, emotionally spiritually, and it becomes very hard to make decisions. It becomes hard to do anything that that really requires effort. S so it's really not a passing mood right? These symptoms can stick around for a while. And that's the concerning part. It's a that's what we're hoping to do with today's show, Live with the lows his sister really give you some encouragement. Not today. Definitely replace a therapist or, for that matter, a primary care physician, But just to kind of give you some some of the signs of what depression is that maybe some tools that can help you along with the way We're going to take a quick break on right after the break. There is if you do not like him in a movie, you've just not watched movies because I am Bebe has him at over 200 credits. In his lifetime, and we're talking about everything you know. Like you just played there from the sound of music to return to the Pink Panther TOC, Star Trek six. A beautiful Mind the Insider up. Girl with the Dragon tattoo recently knives out, which was just you know, a little over a year ago, he was in that and he was working. There's one credit to his name that he was working on, at least in terms of a voice Actor. Up until the end there, so we don't know exactly what happened. The other than the fact that he was 91. Possibly this was all the rage or if there was anything else so associated with it, But like you said he was working pretty much right up into the end. Was stunned by his performance and knives out. I thought for a guy who was in who of that age and the enthusiasm and what he put into that role. He didn't have to work, but he was just so good at it. I guess he didn't want to give it up. Sure that you know that's the case with so many people who, when they find something that they love, and what they do is not a job. It is it comes from their heart and they love it. Why stop doing it? And you're right and knives out. He was Fantastic. And if you think about, you know if the end scene where he kind of ties it all together and you get the sense of you know what this woman was going through and what she was told in the which was acting on them. The way he kind of describes lays out this plan for her on De fact that he was 87 or 88. When he was doing that is just extraordinary. My generation remembers him from the role of Captain von Trapp in Sound of music. As you mentioned, we heard the sound bite a second ago. And you know, he said, I remember reading something, Jason that he really didn't even like that movie or expected to become a classic hits. You know, not surprising, and I don't know that, you know, He's a kind of classically trained Shakespeare type of guy. I mean, he really He acted his his, uh, his tail off and he's fantastic in it. We, as you mentioned don't know a cause of death for a lot of detail, But we do know that he was at home in Connecticut. Is that right? Yeah, with his wife, Elaine Taylor. We're told by his side, the two of them together in the statement from his manager, longtime friend, uh, that he and his wife who had been together for 53 years. Was there with him on, But she was by his side, you know, might seem to lead that there was some kind of illness or something that was going on. Or maybe this is just sudden. We don't know. I mean, one of the first question is, of course in this time is that what does this have Anything to do with Kovar 19, which has taken so many people, especially in that age range, but we've not heard anything about that. But It was nice to get that from somebody who knows me in private life to reach out and say, I disagree with you. Usually on politics. Put on this. You're correct. It's just funny, because and I appreciate it is very nice woman. I said very nice note in response. It's amazing to me because here I am. I've been telling you that they're going to start saying we need we need double masks and 95 masks. None of that. And somehow we've just discovered that now, right now that everyone sees that cities have just been ravaged by Cove it with all the social distancing and the lockdowns and the mask. Then they hand watching all the stuff that's been happening. Clearly did not stop this pandemic. Okay? Obviously, all they can argue is it would have been so much worse, but anybody looked at this says It's worse than it was when we were doing any of those things in March. So why would it be so much worse? Exactly now, like how much worse would it be? What is what is so much worse? Look like that's what I want to know. We're setting all time records. In December and January for covert deaths for covert cases, But he'd be so much was okay. They just say this because what else they're gonna say. "That's 808 590957. Dr Collins or just before the break. We were talking about the vaccine when we can get it when it's gonna be available. Obviously, nobody knows right now. But the other problem is you were mentioning that out of a group of 50 people. 15 people were the only ones that we're willing to take. And what is the fear? Well, I think in general, certain populations have a fear of vaccines, period. So there's a whole anti vaccination movement. You know the anti Vaxxers and then people think that there's just bad. Whatever is put in the vaccine is unhealthy. Whether it's the Delia went meeting the solution in which the vaccine sitting has some unhealthy products. Granted, there's been a history of mercury being put in vaccines as a preservative. So it's not unwarranted. Fear the pharma, you know, uh, system has always done something that makes us question the safety of our products. But now you know the preservatives, resort preserves, but the way the vaccines have created, delivered her safer and cleaner and really shouldn't Cause a problem and unfortunately with covert, I don't know that we have that made choices. You kind of got to get the vaccine. Well, I think that you know, Unfortunately, because of the news in the sensationalism of one person dies around about the time that they get a vaccine. There's this, you know? Well, it had to be about the vaccine, and the vaccine's not safe of two people die or three people died in a week or two weeks after they get the vaccine. There's this connection that all the vaccines bad. And that's just, you know, hyping sensationalism. But like we said, I'm getting the visor vaccine on Saturday and I've heard from a few people don't get it because people are dying from it. But really, if they've administered 20 million doses already and only maybe I'm gonna say on Lee with no disrespect to the people that died, 2025 people. Died. We're really looking at 0.1%. Death, which is a very low rate. When you look at populations, especially the death rate from Covina, which is 0.5% in the six population, so It's it's exponentially safer to get the vaccine than to get Cove it. What do we know about some of the side effects or more? So how long it takes or some of these side effects to manifest? Well, I think most people are getting side effects with the second dose. So the first dose is not his potent on second dose is more potent. Maybe it's just your bis response is greater because it's already seen a little bit of The protein that piece of the spike protein that generates a neutralizing antibody. So It could be anywhere from muscle sort. I mean, nothing to muscle soreness, chills aching. I've had some patients get some gastrointestinal upset, just like you might think would happen with the virus. I've had some patients get some brief episodes of shortness of breath, just like you might have with the virus. That doesn't mean the vaccine causes symptoms that just your response to the Vaccination generated those symptoms. You're still going to recover from those and not have the viral long term effects. So do you think the fear is because maybe it hasn't been tested as long as a zloty as some of the other bank scenes have been tested because they move this forward on an emergency basis, So they get the you know the vaccine out there, or do you think it's just the people don't understand. It's not a dead or alive virus that get injected with bullets that struck that was a great question. So let's talk with, you know what did it take to get this vaccine produced so The reality is is that technology has changed. And so what took 15 years 25 years ago or seven or eight years 25 years ago. Now they've got the ability to create the protein, the part of the virus that generates an immune response. On a computer model that can be then created in a lab in one day. So all of the Knowledge and that that had to be done for years and years and years now really has done in one day and because there were so many cases of of Kobe it around the world. The virus, vaccinate the vaccines, especially my journey was able to be tested, You know, so they had hundreds of thousands of cases that were they were tested against. Statistically, that's a very powerful study. So when you've been test 10 2040 50, you know they had 90,000 people. So even though it happened quickly because the virus was so come and they were able to test enough people that the study had a lot of strength. And when I mean statistical strength, so A lot of you did that's all done. The whole time is made that moot time and the way this virus spread allowed us to say we have enough data to really know what this Vaccination does I think people are afraid of everything. They're afraid of Kovar. They're afraid of the vaccine. And now the latest thing for them to be afraid of us. They're hearing the word variant. You know, in England, they've got a very and suddenly that broke hired another hearing about this fate, right? Surrounded. You hear about this? Yeah. The variant of the vaccine and And I think people are thinking that Okay, now it's morphed into some other hyper, You know, covert strain that does this vaccine work on the variants? What's your answer to that? Well. I don't know. Exactly. But I'm going toe make a supposition. Which is these variants really don't change the disease course they might be Maura, less virulent. But the way that this virus works the way that the virus attach is to our body and the way that the vaccines attack the way the virus attach is to our body Eisen being changed by these variants so that the vaccine should still be effective. I think that vaccination to.

How different hospitals battle the pandemic to save lives
"Thanksgiving holiday arrives during an escalating calamity. More than one million people are testing positive for Corona virus every week. Now that is a high enough number that there is a good chance that some of your family friends or co workers. Among them. It's certainly been true for me these last several weeks if you want to identify and especially hard hit state, just throw a dart at a map because the odds are that any state you hit will qualify. This morning we visit three. Sebastian Martinez Valdivia is a K B A. And Missouri Blake farmer is with WPL and in Nashville, Tennessee, and Bram Sable Smith. Is with Wisconsin public radio. Welcome to all of you. Good morning. Thank you. Morning, and Bram. How widespread is this surge in Wisconsin, where you are? It's quite widespread, you know, by September, public health experts were really sounding the alarm about the rise. In cases we're seeing in the state initially were seen surges and cities where the university started located, but very quickly. The virus is rampant in communities. All over Wisconsin. As you know, Steve cases they're just the beginning of a covert search. So our hospital started filling up quickly. And maybe most concerned involves our death. Worried. We reported the record 104 deaths yesterday. We're losing about 52 people every day, on average and over 3000 people. Wisconsin have died of covered 19 so far, and I should also note we are seeing a slight downturn. Our cases are slightly our cases are dropping ever so slightly, But we're still very much at the top of the mountain and Steve the death rates very similar here in Tennessee. But cases are still climbing often more than 4000 Day. And As we found throughout this pandemic destined to lag those big spikes in new cases by a couple of weeks, So Tennessee's bracing for what could be to come because so far they're just has no sign existing of cases, letting up. Blake, over here in neighboring Missouri were in a similar ballpark in terms of new cases on deaths. But the really troubling trend has been in hospitalizations, which are high and continuing to rise on. Hospitals are really struggling with capacity and a lot of parts of the state. Well, let's talk a little bit more about hospitals or doing in Missouri, then Yeah, well, one of the big problems is a lot of the smaller rural hospitals that traditionally transfer patients toe urban and metro areas for intensive care are really struggling to find beds because those larger hospitals are already full. S O. For example, Cocks Health, which is in Springfield, the third biggest city here in Missouri, has expanded its hospital capacity multiple times over the past nine months, but it's still had to turn people away. Steve Edwards is the CEO there. So we will have added 147 bed capacity, which is probably bigger than the Average hospital state, Missouri, he says the hospital keeps hitting what it would have considered a worst case scenario every couple of weeks. But adding rooms isn't really the half of it the biggest challenge, according to Edward to staffing, so training staff to care for covert patients, and then the draining work of actually caring for them. So that's the crisis in Missouri, Bram Sable Smith, Let's go back to Wisconsin Howard doctors trying to keep up where you are. You know, October the state we converted our state fairgrounds into what's called an alternative care facility to handle the excess capacity. We have so about 89% of the hospital beds available in the entire state for being occupied right now, in some regions, that's higher. At the alternative care facility. There's only nine patients right now, though. That's in part because it's voluntary to go there. It's also because it's where patients will go to recover kind of after they've cleared a hurdle in their covert treatment. The idea behind that is To free up resource is inside the hospitals to treat on influx of patients. Researchers like ICU beds that are in very short supply here and brand that the corps of Engineers build alternative care sites here in Tennessee is well, but increasingly, there's a concern about having the staff to open them. And a big reason for that is that so many nurses and doctors air out themselves with Kovar 19 or because they have to quarantine Well, Blake. What are hospitals in Tennessee, saying about that? Well, they're really starting to sound the alarm. In a way we haven't heard for a long time. Hospital administrators have wanted to make sure people knew that they would be able to handle the usual patients along with covert, and that's just less. So now. Dr Katrina Green works in an HCIA emergency room here in Nashville. We're worried about what the delays and care will mean for our patients, and I am personally terrified in my hospital. Being full could result in someone dying in the waiting room. The situation has become particularly severe in parts of Texas as well like El Paso and love IQ. For now that they're able to transport covert patients to other parts of the state. But there's going to be a time likely when those hospitals air capacity to You know, I spent some time last week and one of the five covert units at the University Hospital here in Madison, Wisconsin, where I live. I spoke to Mary Lowe. She's a nursing assistant in the unit. She's been there since the pandemic began. This has been going on for a long time. And right now it doesn't feel like there's an end in sight. Even though there will be a time it doesn't necessarily feel like that right now. You know that unit as 28 beds and they've been consistently full and she says, it's it's exhausting and remember, the whole reason for shutdowns early on, was to prevent hospitals from being overrun will now in a lot of these states like ours, Those restrictions are long gone, and hospitals are now nearing the edge of that cliff. But political leaders are really finding it hard to go backward after lifting restrictions, months, Okay, granted, that's granted. That's true. But suggestion haven't some political leaders at least faced pressure to approve more safety measures. Yeah, There's definitely been pressure here in Missouri. The State Hospital Association actually sent a letter last week to a Republican governor Mike Parson, urging him to kind of issue one of those statewide mass mandate, saying the Wolf is at the door. But like a lot of Republican governors, he's rejected that call just to the north of us, though. In Iowa, the story's a little different. So Governor Kim Reynolds, there, also a Republican, was initially against the mask mandate, and she even said that city's couldn't issue their own mandates back in the summer, But she recently reversed course. I would have seen one of the biggest surges in cases and hospitalizations in the country per capita. I will has roughly half the population of misery, but it's almost in the same ballpark in terms of new cases. S O earlier this month, Reynolds did end up issuing a statewide mass mandate as well as some restrictions on public and private gatherings, with exceptions for some businesses and religious services.

Jane's Hoya Tour
"I'll have gathered the Hoyas from all around my house and brought the here to take a look at the mall and to give you a guided tour just because most of them are up quite high to look at and talk about the same time so here we are with the hoyas choice and I have. I thought I had thirteen but I think actually two four six eight ten twelve. I actually think less forgotten one which is entirely possible that I have a dozen of these things. Let's Talk I the one that I've had the longest and that is my variegated Julia Canosa which well let's be fair. It's a shadow of its former self. If you listen to the Hoyer episode with Doc Chamberlain you will remember my Hoya. Canosa suffered a terrible fate. which was that a load? Some white completely white leaves to grow. There was a stem. The head completely white leaves on nothing else rather than judiciously. Cutting those off. I decided to leave them to grow. And it suddenly said the plot into a tailspin and I just about about one. She save a single cutting which I then replanted a poll. And this is what I've got now east. Not Dating Site Body's already flowered award and the single cutting has branched into two different stem cells looking reasonably good. Let's just describe this heuer. It's probably the most common hoyer that you see out there. What most people would call the wax clouds or wax flower? Eight Scott the standard luther. Relief that you'll be familiar with in the royal family. I don't exactly what variegation this Kovar is actually cooled by but it's the one with cream edges basically creamy white edges and a kind of a slight silvery splash in the center. The leaves are I would say fairly standard thickness. And they're tiny bit thought furry and it's a very attractive plant and I'm glad to say score really really well if I see any of those white leaves though the first thing I'm GonNa do is get rid of them because as I said before it was bad knees when this happened so this is doing pretty well now now. I think what I'm probably going to do with. This plant is taking cutting come spring because I would like it to push out a bit more have a bit more growth going on the part east during the classic thing. People worry about this but it really is totally normal for Hoyas and in fact many posit scramble and climb about which is putting hanging out completely bare stems with no leaves on them. I and you start to panic and think whereby leaves but what the parts doing really. Well I think it's what he's doing i. I think I've read this somewhere. But pops botanist can confirm this for me. They put out feelers to see whether it's a good place for them to grow and then once bats confirmed that they're happy that little extra ground they've colonized then they start putting up leave so they don't really waste any energy before expanding into new areas. What you'll also notice along the stem of the Hoyer this particular where on many others bumpy bits? which again can be a bit alarming? You might I think you've got scale but he's actually just adventitious roots which Tabu popout and then really sought to grow if they come across anything. That's route that's they can route into so this one's hanging so there's nothing to reach into. Those adventitious roots tend to say quite small. But they're not a problem just just waiting for the opportunity to route into something. So that's my hair. Canossa the flowers on this sort of Shell pink furry the thing that got me into Hoyas in the first place because just are so unusual gorgeous and they fly quite easily as I've already said so. Yep The flowers are great is the the foliage is great. It's a really lovely plant and if you have only one then on also is a good choice. It's easy to get hold of two which is not true of all who the WHO is. We're GONNA talk about today okay from the sublime to the ridiculous we're gonNA look at Hoya. Linear ours now. Now if you remember this specimen of mine mine came from James Wall as cutting when I visited his place. And it's done really well I'm going to take a lot of cuttings off this plot and yet it's still quite big and lush now. Relatively speaking given how long have had it. It is very very dry right now. I think I need to give this good water because it's starting to get that kind of very dull. Look that plants get when they are in need of some drinking and it's also quite like to pick up so I know that it is I plant and and this will be reported in the spring because I can see lots of routes coming through the bottom of the pulse. What I love about hoyle any are as well as suggests? The leaves are really unusual there about four centimeters long couple of inches long. I'd say and they look like run a beans or you don't call them Wanna beans in the. US been like a what you call runner beans in the US. I've forgotten green beans that look at me like green beans jeans and they're they're actually rolled in on themselves and you get a little grooved on the center and there were other softly. Furry they come out outs either side of the note and you get these long strings hanging down and they really do look very different from any other horror that you'll come across I guess stat. That adaptation is so that they can preserve water and this horrid doesn't like to be kept on the dry side we'll find with the stems on this one is that it does produce juice leave straight away unlike the con- Osa but it tends to grow stems until they get heavy enough to start trailing down so you end up with this effect. We've got kind of arms reaching up and then gradually they will drop down as the plant matures and they get long enough that they start to hang the flowers on this one. They tend to flower for me any way towards the end of the summer during autumn time and the flowers on this lovely scent which is comes into its own about seven o'clock in the evening this smell Eleni buttery mini smell really delicious and the flowers a really horrible. They are pure white and they tend to be visible among the clusters of leaves again. This is reason to have this plot hanging because it does look really great when viewed from below. I'm now this one in places like India and Nepal and it's not the easiest of course. I've never had any problems with it. But if you have a feeling that you and the person who gives the plant too much water you made strong with this one so just take care of the water inside and make sure it's really well drained but yeah. This is one of my absolute absolute favorites and would be without that particular one more talk about and that is where Matilda now. This is actually a hybrid. It's across between Serb hanes and we're con Osa and this one came to cutting. I can't remember who gave this to me. I think it was us on a UK. HOUSEPLANTS facebook group. But again if you are going to grow start off with and he wants in court easy to get going with I think Matilda Sabrina good choice. This plot has small roundish oval leaves with silver splashing on them. I mean it's hard degeneracy toys because the league shake dust change. I find that sometimes the leaf leaves can be quite elongated and then the ones quite oval and that changes us the leaf as a stem matures. This will hasn't flowered yet but I just love the look of it. It's it's actually desperately in need this. One of being trained around the hoops of I can really enjoy the foliage up close. The flight was on this. One looks very much like Canosa except the flowers are white and fuzzy rather than Pale pink and fuzzy according to winstrom unstained this flows early and often so on still waiting by flowers gonNA hoping that they will come fairly soon but even if it never flowered I think I would still be in love with this planet. Really really beautiful. I- propagated cutting of this using the hottest tub technique. Thanks to Sully Williams or for highlighting that brilliant technique for me. And it won't really well for this plant. The only thing is you end up with roots coming from every node. So what I would do. What is rooted is late on some compost and allow it to route? But it's really easy. Plant ICAGO wrong with this and apparently the scent is quite like Hokkaido. Sir I have never got any sense to all of my work so that's not very informative but I'm not worried about the scent. I think it is beautiful flowers. And that's quite enough for
