"Is Bloomberg daybreak, Europe. Where we don't want the long arm of the Chinese Communist Party reaching towards the central nervous system of our country. The UK has been more insulated from that deposit flight across banks. I think as a general principle, it's always good in any market, including the technology market, to have a level playing field. Bloomberg daybreak, Europe. On Bloomberg radio. It's just gone 7 30 in London, good morning. I'm Stephen Carol. And I'm Caroline hepco, welcome to blue big day by Europe. There are two hangs hangs up by half of 1% to CSI 308 tenths of 1% higher on Wall Street, S&P E mini futures are down by a tenth of 1%, the real action, though, from the Japanese yen after the bank of Japan announced that it was scrapping, rate guidance were waiting for the press conference from the new BOJ governor kazuo eeda in a moment, the Japanese yen 1% weaker now against the dollar as we have seen yields dropping across the curve in Japan as well. Those are your markets. Let's go to our top stories. It's being reported that U.S. officials are over swinging talks to rescue first republic bank, citing three people familiar with the matter Reuters reports that the U.S. government is working to bring banks and private equity firms to the table. First republic's issues stem from its stockpile of loans at low interest rates, including an unusually large portfolio of jumbo mortgages to wealthy clients. Those debts have lost value amid the Federal Reserve rate hikes prompting a $100 billion drop in first quarter deposits. Turning next to the bank of Japan, which has scrapped guidance on future rates and announced a review of its ultra loose monetary policy, the announcement comes at the first BOJ meeting under the leadership of new governor kazuo ueda, Bloomberg's global economics and policy editor Kathleen Hayes is in Japan. She says the shift, the key on any shift in its yield curve control policy will be sustained inflation. The bigger convinced that inflation is going to stay above 2% easily regularly, not just suddenly turn around when people realize that it's still Japan. And they don't want their prices to rise. I think that's gonna be the one of the biggest things that helps them get ready for shifting yield curve control. That's been Burke's Katherine Hayes speaking to us earlier, the yield curve control policy has led to the BOJ owning around half of all Japanese government bonds. In New York, Charlie palette Bloomberg daybreak Europe. Activation blizzard CEO says the decision by UK regulators to block Microsoft's takeover of his company doesn't make sense. Speaking to Bloomberg, Bobby kotick said the two firms are now preparing to challenge the decision. It clearly is in a rational conclusion. And I think we have every expectation as does Microsoft that we should prevail in an appeal with the tribunal. Comments come after Microsoft's president Brad Smith called the decision to block the deal bad for Britain on Wednesday, the UK's competition and markets authority effectively banned the deal saying it would give Microsoft an unfair advantage in cloud gaming. Those are our top stories this morning. Okay, just watching the Japanese yen right now as governor how heco sorry a way to begins. Force the house? There's a lot of things that there's a shortage of right now. So obviously worrisome, especially with these organizations that try to send these to places where they really, really need them. Yeah, for sure. But there's few shortages that can be attributed to Amy Schumer. And this one has been, at least in part, there is a big tampax ad campaign featuring Amy Schumer that Tam peck said was so colossally impactful and sales went up so high that they blame part of the tampon shortage on that ad campaign. I'd buy anything Amy Schumer told me to buy. I love her. Sure. She's America's greatest national treasure. She's one of them. That's a weird thing right up until you're going to need and then go home while that dave knew what he was talking about. I wish i had spare pants. So i went out to get them change pants. Did you see vouch e in the news yesterday about she says if you're against foudy year against science now there's a lot to unpack here. First of all is now referring to himself as a ha- much the way good old number twenty three would say. Will you know michael jordan had a good deal. Well lebron james had a good game today when these guys talk about themselves with their own name so fouled she was being interviewed and he referred to himself. I guess that's called the third person and he was defending himself against an onslaught of attacks against his reputation yesterday. He was talking with chuck. Todd tell a couple of first names soon. As meet the press dries up. He'll be doing mid days over and kicks. Chuck todd some beyond safe for you and bouchier said that. An attack against him was an attack against science. He says he's always followed the scientific process but critics are claiming that he flip flopped on the issue of masks. Now why do they say that because he did because he absolutely did others are saying he had known about the idea. That cova came to us from a wuhan laboratory but dismissed the idea and you know why people are saying that about him because he did. Yeah exactly and don't forget the reason fao cheese on. Tv right now is why he selling book. He's done with a pandemic. he's just trying to sell his book right now. That's the most important thing in his world right now and This theory which you remember trump was all over from the go from the very gecko and people hated him for well. It just gave trumpeters morte about them and they hated it. But now it's starting to look No one's gonna say trump was right but it's starting to look like perhaps that is exactly what happened as many. Yes i know chris. I know you're over there all the time i know it. You're you're right on the bubble we're going to get a jar and we're going put it right next to the analogy jar. We know that you knew. We know that these are not uncommon. That these things get out. Okay thank you our own little. Dr fauci here. Vara logist yes. He plays the snare drum. But he's really corologis. So anyway i gotta say i'm a little tired of the science bullying. I'm tired of them saying if you don't believe in saudi don't believe in science as if as if you doubt. Infallible holy sanctimonious science your some sort of backward neanderthal. Science has been wrong about a lot of things. The whole premise of sciences. They're learning and exploring and it's ever changing right but they take this attitude about science with two things in particular kovin climate change and the like if you listen to science europe. Effing idiot really. I mean it's just like you're an idiot now. Science hey look at challenger cyclamates a nuclear winter. Okay science explain those blunders to me. There's no such thing. As nuclear winter cyclamate so really was nothing wrong with them and challenger explained that one to me scientists. You know these are big mistakes that were made so like for example. There's a commercial right now for a drug and is supposed to help people who have involuntary body movements. I don't know if you've seen it. "25.6. It had been nearly four years between starts. What were your most vivid memories of that day? You know, I think there's a lot of nervous energy for me just from the from the first nap and you know it's it's been. It had been such a long time. Um you know, obstinate preseason games and all that, but it's just not the same, really, and being able to get in the natural. Regular season game, I think was was extremely exciting for me. Obviously, I was, you know, very pumped to play and obviously get the wind to is the best feeling. But, um, you know, like I said, you know, a lot of guys would be in the league for a long time and still never see that opportunity. So just to be able to Get that was was. It was awesome. Awesome feeling for me? Talking to Brandon Allen. You joined the Bangles this year initially is the so called quarantine quarterback where you had to be kept away from the other guys as much as possible. What was the hardest part of that? Um, you know, I think just not being around him, I think was the artist part. You know you You've done things a certain way for so long and then you know, Cove. It comes and everything just changes. It's all zoom calls. It's you. You got to stay away from when you can't come near anyone. It's just very different. Um, feeling, and so I think just the hardest part is not being around really any of the guys, especially the quarterback room, you know you you grow relationships in that room. When you're in meetings together, and to be over zoom and have to stay away from the practice was was kind of Challenging and difficult the same time. All right. A few wild card questions as we wrap up fun facts and Brandon Allen. Are you a fan of another sport? And if so, what team do you follow? I think that goes back to the grown ups are excited, really have a team. I think I grew up just watching. And having favorite players. I didn't really have a favorite team, so I am a fan of Polish points of love, washing golf. I think that's probably my favorite thing to watch other than football, and obviously Justin Thomas, and then those guys, there are DJ are a lot of fun to watch. And then seeing Tiger back out there is there's been a lot of fun to watch. So find a pic. I definitely probably the Gulf. Sounds like you play. I do. I tried to anyway. Not as good of Stanley, but I'm working on it. Is he the chap and see the Bangles? A golfing champ? I think he is right now. I think he's probably the guy that everyone's take down and on the golf course. Do you have any hidden talents? I don't know that they're hidden talents. I was talking to drew sample today and you said one of his offseason projects is to learn to juggle and I told him I could try to teach him how to juggle in five minutes, so maybe juggling could be hidden down in that early. Don't really have anything that special. You and AJ green, our team jugglers. I don't know if you're aware that he has that skill. He's got the juggling Scott. I didn't know as many people didn't know how to juggle. So I guess it is a More of a hidden talent that I thought it was. I'm on that list. Unfortunately, in your most extravagant purchase, I've done a good job of not having Too many extravagant purchases. Would have to say just last Christmas. That is hard, um Probably have to say I've met a lot of really good football players a problem. Michael Jordan. Have not had that pleasure of meeting Michael driving. That would be a really cool thing Just to say that you shook hands of my majority met Michael Jordan, I think is a really cool thing. I'd love to play some golf with him sometimes, so that would be That would be pretty cool. You'd have to play for big money based on everything about him at the golf course I better bring some people with me. Put it all right. You are off the hot seat. I appreciate your time. "What other qualities unite his ever-widening diverse portfolio of work is actually an answer? That comes pretty simply. And that's just the context context of the situation and what I mean by context. It's not just the physical context. It's also the cultural context. You're just trying to for me anyway as an architect understand what what the situation is and then come together with some sort of appropriate response the response is always going to be different. And I suppose there's always a bit of a changing need an atmosphere around the work which changes and I WANNA talk. Tiny about sustainability is the issue of the day but your work is always some of the best examples of it. Do this brilliant. They engaged just with the idea of nature and the built environment and bringing those two things together. Do you think that conversations always been there or is it more important now than I. You know I can say easily easily in my career. Absolutely that's been a conversation that's been part of my life. Since I was a kid I grew up in a big landscape. Big Sky big mountains big desert's and so for me. The natural landscape quite naturally comes to me as a place to understand quickly and a place to respond to quickly away from a sustainability strategy. What that means is that if in fact you do engage sort of a natural landscape in a sense if you understand natural landscapes you actually understand sustainability because you're understanding the natural forces and so if you're making decisions architectural decisions based on understanding those natural forces not only just climatic metro forces Belsen Material Natural Forces physical natural forces? We actually making reasonable notable responses and a reasonable response. A smart response is a sustainable response. Is that making sense. There was the building may be low maintenance. The building Mesa breath. The building may sort of respond correctly to a solar situation. And that's a sustainable strategy. The profession has been I think a mixed bag. Frankly Klay I think if you look different careers. You'll see different responses historically. You can go back any number of years and recognize architects KOTEX. That came from. Maybe they didn't have the word sustainability but they had basis that should be a rational response and again a rational response would be smart response. That's would be a low energy response would be a sustainable response. We learn a lot even from non architects. Our ancestors the way they had to solve problems before there it was a grid they had to sort of figure out how to sustainably us. Maybe what they had cut in the form of firewood it or gathered in the form of some sort of heat source. Certainly if you're in a temperate semi tropical climate the strategies that our ancestors there's would do buildings were also sustainable because in other words if you're in a semi tropic air you're looking for coolness so you know how to engage depending on the humidity of a situation but maybe maybe evaporative cooling as an swamp cooler or leading the natural breezes go underneath a building through a building in a cross a top of building interesting so you think design and its capacity acetates. Who I suppose do the most with the least lends itself actually to this sustainable fight? I guess materials place though where the technology is shifting most quickly and interesting that you guys can come dig in your work use a lot of woods so we're almost back to that sense of the natural being able to do things as well as the sins ethic. Well you're making a really interesting point because you're right. The Pacific northwest the Canadian West. They really are the big forest up there so that was an available material for many many years so we also recognize the difficulty with using wooden. And if you're in a environment oh maybe you could say an environment similar to like London which is a relatively typically wet humid and particularly. Yeah no kidding but historically basically you have done using wood products is that in a the sense in these sort of mild climates. y'All set up a compost heap. You've already started the sort of deconstruction. This would so from a sustainability sustainability standpoint. There's always been this. Conversation is in fact like most of London is maybe made from bricks and concrete and steel is that potentially more sustainable strategy. Because there's no maintenance you don't have to come back you don't have to replace bricks mortar concrete or maybe has a much longer life span and certainly the embodied energy initially is is higher but maintenance becomes a big part of a circling back to wood. Wood is going through sort of a technological evolution evolution or maybe a revolution where the way would is being used and being treated now is actually becoming much more sustainable. So here do you have well. It's always been maybe sustainable one but one could argue that. It's a complicated answer. I think it's becoming a simpler answer traditionally. If you you build out of wood you're basically encapsulating the carbon but if that carbon begins to deteriorate you're basically releasing this is carbon again if there's a way to sort of encapsulate that carbon which is what we're doing for a number of years now with CLT's an example we're making structure out of a lot of woods that's across nominates and cross laminated treating them. Well it's a way of making this would and taking a bunch of wood and making something structural out of it which is actually taking the tree as it's growing is naturally an air scrubber innocence so it actually unlike concrete or steel. It's not being made with petroleum products and releasing a bunch of carbon in the process of being made. It's actually dealing with it so it's actually a scrubbing device. Ice It's a divisive ask is cleaning the air. That's a good thing. Then when you got it and shape it and whatever and then you assemble it if you can keep that from not rotting or decomposing or burning. Then you've got a really interesting sustainability strategy where you're growing something takes out the problem. The some of the issues. And then you're encapsulating it and storing it absolutely and I think when I talk to people about sustainability is while you've hit tournament good point that despite the initial outlay of building things from bricks and a lot of the unfairness of the building industry at the time of London's Victorian and Georgian building. Actually a lot of the move lasted rather well and the way that people used those structures have changed over time have been divided into flats. But they've been quite good shells and I sometimes see new buildings flying up big big losses tail towers and I wonder how they're wonder how they're going to age so that's an interesting point. When Your Architectural Co Conspirator Jim Olson was here he told me a very compelling story about knowing that he wanted to be an architecture and extraordinarily young age it was a bucolic image of a child building forts plane with bow and Arrow no doubt carefully cultivated automated to entertain me? Did you always know you wanted to be an architect and that same way. I knew I didn't want to be an architect. Okay as a kid. My Dad was an architect attacked and I grew up around a community of architects. And they were actually mid century architecture actually very good. They did some terrific projects in the fifties fifties and sixties. But I actually found the culture kind of uncomfortable to be around for all reasons. You know the culture of architecture and some of the characteristics actress of that what I was comfortable around are more comfortable around was part of that community was a very strong artist community and I appreciated the artists anti elitist inventive creative fun loving Bohemian kind of character a which was the antithesis of what I saw in the architecture community so I knew I wasn't going to be an artist because I think in artists comes from a different place and even as as a child I knew that wasn't a place I was going but also did not want to be an architect in don't converge. Yeah well it. It was kind of an interesting the process for me certainly and it was a process that even surprised my dad because he knew how I felt about it. I actually went to the university to study hard. Sciences basically physics yes in some math and whatever and I thought possibly geophysics was really my direction academically but I was also very interested in mountain climbing and mountain skiing. That was almost my passion in a way. So there was an academic direction and Sort of a physical direction completely separate from the profession architecture. And I've been saying this figured out pretty quickly that I wasn't as clever as I thought. I was in that particular academic direction so I started taking our classes asses because our classes were always something I found interesting or important to my background and we all know that architecture is the intersection of rational. He was Sir I was absolutely and it was like this relentless force that was pulling me into this black hole of architecture and ultimately fell into it and of course. In Retrospect I. I couldn't be happier about what I get to do. As a professional I just pinch myself I lucked out. Fortunately against all desire I became what I didn't. I want to become as a case for face. I think.
