The prime minister is in Rwanda today, he tells reporters that there that he needs to hear voters concerns. We've had some tough election results and they've been, I think a reflection of a lot of things, but we've got to recognize that voters are going through a tough time at the moment. Steven, let's get to our top stories we start with UK politics, Boris Johnson has suffered a major twin election upset, losing a formerly safe UK parliament seat in Devon and a so called red wall seat in Wakefield in west Yorkshire. The prime minister says governments often lose by elections, but he has to listen to what voters are saying and that he will keep going. The liberal the liberal Democrats won in Devon by overturning a 24,000 Conservative Party majority to take the rural constituency of tiverton and honiton is the largest majority ever overturned in a by election, and the Labor Party won back Wakefield after it fell to the Tories in 2019. Heads are already rolling in response to the losses. "And I'm Brian Curtis in Hong Kong. Let's check this out with his top business stories and the markets. Chinese president Xi Jinping's rumored visit to Hong Kong to mark the city's 25th anniversary of Chinese rule has now been cast into doubt, and this is after top officials in Hong Kong have been infected, with COVID. The banks on Wall Street are set to return tens of billions of dollars to investors that's after the big lenders pass the feds annual stress test. The test measured their ability to withstand market turmoil. The bank showed that they had enough capital to handle a mix of surging unemployment, collapsing real estate prices and a plunge in stocks. Jerome Powell says his commitment to fighting inflation is unconditional. The fed chair said a recession wasn't inevitable. The economy is very strong, he said, and that the fed is focused on preserving a strong labor market. He downplayed concerns about worsening liquidity and treasury markets, arguing that they are functioning reasonably well. Meantime, governor Michelle Bowman says she thinks that raising rates by 75 basis points next month will work and she would like to continue with hikes of at least 50 basis points after that until price pressure is cool. Well, we had an IPO in Hong Kong today, Gogo X, the logistics startup. It jumped about 4% in its debut on the Hong Kong stock exchange, shares were sold at $21 and 50 cents each in an IPO that raised just $72 million. Let's check the markets in the Asia Pacific, the nikkei is up 7 tenths of 1%. It's a day where just about every equity market is rallying. The benchmarks include the hang seng index up 9 tenths of 1%. The CSI 300 in China up about 6 tenths of a percent, and the tye X in Taiwan rallying 1.3%. Global news, 24 hours a day live and at Bloomberg quick take brought to you by 2700 journalists in a 120 countries in Hong Kong Bryant Curtis, this is Bloomberg. Milton had been scheduled to go on trial in federal court Manhattan on July 18th, but his lawyers say they need more time to examine a superseding indictment that added claims that Milton's scheme to defraud the sellers of his Utah ranch, which she posted as part of a $100 million bail package last year. His lawyers are also asking the judge to stop prosecutors from showing jurors evidence of his wealth, lifestyle, and spending habits which they say would be irrelevant and unfairly prejudicial. "We are joined by Lauren Chen, who is a social and political commentator. It's a fair way to put it. Anything but vlogger, I think about vlogger. Thank you for having me. What do you have to do to become a vlogger? I mean, pretty much just film yourself and put it on the Internet. It's a very low bar, which is why I try to avoid it. And usually what you're filming is like putting on makeup or you just do in pranks bro, so. Yeah, I mean, the thing that when I talk to younger audiences, when I know we have a societal problem, is when I ask them, what do you want to do when you grow up? They're like, I want to be an influencer. Oh no, no. And I'm like, there's nothing good that's going to come out of this. Yeah, I have my husband's little cousin. She's like 9 or ten and she wants to be a YouTuber. She actually for Christmas asked for like a ring light and stuff. And I know it's strange because I have a YouTube channel, but I'm actively trying to convince her again, so you don't want this. You don't want this. Don't do this to yourself. Yeah, I mean, if you want to know the road ahead, ask those coming back. There's nothing fulfilling. There's other things in life. So introduce yourself to our audience, you have a big following and are well respected, so you're from Canada originally. Yes, I'm originally from Canada, but I Hong Kong you said, right? You grew up in Hong Kong where my father is from. So pretty much my parents birthplaces just hate liberty right now, which is a little bit depressing. Things aren't going so great in the homeland. But yeah, I'm in Nashville. We love Tennessee and I do YouTube videos as well as write some articles. I like to talk about politics and culture and the way that the two intersect, which I think politics is downstream from culture, and I think for the longest time, the right was losing young people because we were so focused on politics and not on culture. And I wish I could just throw Thomas souls basic economics at a young person and have them be a conservative, but we know it doesn't work

The 2nd Amendment Protects ALL Other Amendments

"All the other amendments. Now, if we are not clear about why that is the intent of the Second Amendment, then it becomes nothing more than just a self defense argument. And then they'll say, well, then why do you need an AR-15 just to protect yourself? Now, there is a good argument for that. If you know about the LA riots and the kind of legendary Korean storekeepers that went on their roof and protected themselves using AR-15s against the rioters, there is a good reason for self defense. But that's not the intent of it, and it will make us profoundly less free as a country. If we're not clear about why we have the Second Amendment. So right now, about 26 million people in Shanghai, China, are locked down. They can not leave their apartment buildings. What would Shanghai look like right now? If they had a Second Amendment in China, what would Hong Kong have looked like a couple years ago, when China just annexed Hong Kong, if every one of the Hong Kong freedom protesters had an AR-15, slung around their back. Now, this means they had to use it, but as soon as the people have weapons, it becomes a negotiation, and it no longer is a hostage situation. If you do not have a Second Amendment, the government can take you hostage at any time. If only one side has the guns, then one side gets the determine whether or not you are free. Now, if you

Of course, like all promises made by communists, that turned out to be a lie. And there have been crackdowns and arrests and China put into place a law that anyone in Hong Kong violated the Communist Party's authority could be shipped to Mainland China where the courts and the juries would be much stricter. "Before we get into these amazing stories, Mike span, David Tyson, John walker lind, who is Toby Honda. Tell us about what you did in the British armed forces and your life as a journalist before you became an author. Yes, well, you know, we share a somewhat similar accent as listeners and viewers will detect. You still got yours. Our minds kind of rubbing off a little bit, but I don't know. I'm worried. I'm worried about mind getting a little bit Americanized. But I trust yeah, you're a bit soggy in the middle of the Atlantic somewhere. Yeah, I mean the ace. So yeah, I'm 56 years old, I was born in 66. My father was in the navy. We moved around, we sort of ended up in Manchester, industrial city in the northwest. You don't have a mancunian accent. I think the Royal Navy actually did for the mancunian accent, which was pretty skin deep anyway. But you know, I sort of, you know, I wanted to follow in my father's footstep, I guess there's so many sort of young men do. And I also wanted to get out of Manchester and see the world and it just seemed like a very kind of insular sort of small sort of place. And so all that teenage angst was just channeled towards working hard to get out. And so I got a sponsorship from the I joined the navy at 18. Went to Dartmouth, which is the Britannia royal naval college, kind of the equivalent of the U.S. naval academy at Annapolis, but not really because it's more basic officers training. It's like santas is shorter. Yeah, that's right. I mean, I was there for less than a year. And I threw the navy I got a sponsorship to Oxford to study modern history, so I went off whilst serving naval officer, although I barely wore the uniform for those years apart from a few months sailing around sort of Hong Kong and the far east and Australia. So I had some good times. Yes, exactly. So I was serving naval officer for three years at college and then graduated from college and was pitched in to a career. Which I enjoyed immensely, but you know, it was after the Falklands War, which was 1982, I was joining and supplying to join just sort of join the Falklands actually, age 16. But I missed that. I was stationed in Scotland for the Gulf War, tried very hard to get involved. They managed to that's a long way away from Iraq. I know. They managed to win it without meeting my services. "Is Hong Kong part of China? Is Hong Kong in China? I'm so baffled by two stories. I've got two stories in front of me. One story says, well, China has experienced the first two COVID deaths in a year. Another story says the morgues in Hong Kong are overflowing and they're got people out in the streets again in refrigerated trucks. Because so many people are dying in Hong Kong. I just asked my team, Yuri, who's great on foreign affairs, and he said, well, it's a matter of perspective. The media tends to include Hong Kong in China, but they're sort of two different entities. That's the answer. Are people dying in China of COVID or not?

Speaking of technology, did you know the technology used on my first film? Revolutionary. The special effects had just never been done before. They used stop motion animation and matte painting, rear projection, and miniatures all to make me look so alive to those audiences back in 1933. You know, there were even reports of some people fainting because it all just seemed so real. Can you believe that? Well, I guess that's why I'm number 41 on the American Film Institute's list of 100 years, 100 movies. Oops, oops. You won't find Godzilla on that list. Yeah. The plaque is over there next to the reproduced skeletons of all the dinosaurs I felt on skull island. Oh, how I miss that place. Oh. Will you excuse me? Hello, this is Arthur. It's my agent. Hey, Marty, what do you got? Commercial, how much? Yeah, when? Yeah, take it. Bye. Oh, so sorry. It looks like we'll have to cut this interview short. So good of you to come. Listen, if you come back in 9 or ten days, those folks out back should have the pool filled. Bring a towel. Okay. Tata for now. Peek inside a monster ranch and sounds pretty groovy. All right. Tell us about Godzilla's gargantuan villa. Hey, Zilla gang. Welcome to monster cribs. The only show where we show you what it's like to live like the king of the monsters. "Reason, King Kong was also an innovator at amusement parks. Universal Studios has had Kong themed rides like confrontation and King Kong encounter and skull island, reign of Kong for decades. You ride through and suddenly a life sized animatronic Kong appears. Towering above the cart, you're riding in. No man, what memories, huh? And like all Kong related things, these rides use special effects that are cutting edge and will keep you on the edge of your seat. Meanwhile, the first permanent Godzilla themed ride and an amusement park just opened. This year, in Japan, King Kong, first again, you know, I hate to do this because I feel like I've just been taking a huge Kong fist to Godzilla. Pummeling him to bits in this declaration of greatness. But I just have to. Godzilla was a Japanese creation, and we're using the English version of the name, Godzilla. In Japan, this lizard atomic breath monster is called Godzilla, and that word, it's a mash up of two other words in Japanese. Gorillas and Cora. Those are the Japanese words for gorilla and whale. Godzilla's original Japanese name means guerrilla whale. Hello, guerrilla, homage to Kong, anyone. If it's not perfectly clear to everyone by now, the point here isn't who can destroy more stuff or has cooler powers in this world of super sized destructive monsters, Kong is king. He's a trendsetter and literally the reason all the others came along. And unlike that bully Godzilla, who's only setting is temper tantrum, you want King Kong on your side. Oh, he'll bust some heads, too, but there's a chance of getting through to his heart, his ginormous, ginormous heart. A multifaceted argument for the sensitive and entertaining King Kong, Elijah, what'd you think about that argument? The first thing that I stuck with me is the King Kong always comes first. I hate being second. I hate losing. I like being the original. And I think that that was one of the main things that stuck out to me. And the fact that they say that King Kong is just so loving and supportive and he's just a good way to get through to him. I think that that was something good to know. Very good. Well, on our own, it is time for your rebuttal. You've got 30 seconds to blast your competition, and your time starts now. What can we say about King Kong? I don't need to talk about the apes racist origins or problematic history of grabbing ladies through windows. I can talk about his massive size. And that's all. If you want to see how interesting King Kong is don't go to the movies, go to a zoo because he really is just a big ape. I mean, the only cool things about apes are their use of tools in the possibility of using sign language..

"The same applies to education sector. How they are already going. After teachers who are have expressed liberal democratic used before and Going after them. So i say just make the point that That this kind of social engineering in hong kong similar in type. I think is is in the same bane as the social not is happening in china right now and you expect to see more. And i think the best way to protect what's going to happen to hong kong. These days is look at mainland china. Look at mainland china. What they're doing there. You can bet that the same kinda policy language. Same kind of You know a threats will be made by the hong kong government and the hong kong. Police you know you look at the film. Industry in hong kong film industry is now basically been told. The law is not being changed. A film could be censored on grounds of national security by the chief secretary. Now the chief secretary or is former secretary full security. And i would say he is. The most powerful person in hong government structure Moreso than chief excecutive op. Because he is in charge off determining who is a patriot and who's not a patriot which comes to the last part of what i wanna talk about is very quickly about judicial independence. A lot of people asking me. Is there still judicial independence in hong kong. Might answer is not look judicial independence. You cannot just look at superficial things like oh you know whether the judges was someone will call the judge on sunday night to say that case on monday morning. I expect you to the course. We know those kind of things won't happen doesn't happen in in such a to fashion when you look at tradition depend you need to look at the institution news. Look at the whole system a holistic. And i'll just say this. That judges have been told the chief justice when he visited beijing last month. A couple of months ago have been told that he is expected to implement the patriots. Patriots administering hong kong principle. And what we what. What we understand is of course. Patriotism is fine by by the central government. And if they you know they they stay disqualifying me on the same basis stock i. I'm basically not a patriot. I committed acts endangered national security. "Of course hong kong people were not so stupid. Were bit skeptical. You've beijing was going to keep the promises but stan if you're not given the choice you're not really given any say on what you know what is possibly which is not acceptable. But this is the only thing. Take it or leave it. And then so many people including myself. The time was like okay. You know this is what we have to live with. And at the same time also. That's the joints decoration. Promised tonkin people would be able to hong kong. And that's essentially also gave rise to this hong kong democracy movement while the future is going to be written by us and so in the mid one thousand nine hundred eighty s there was also this flourishing of civil society and political groups trying to really rice the future because they signed a british joins decoration would have to be turned into a a basic law hongkongers mini-constitution but promulgated by beijing only. You're so hypocritic. Now you keep talking about democracy but you get really give hong kong people democracy. I wants to add that every step of the way. Whenever britain on the to introduce some measure of democracy to hong kong beijing object so immediately in the mid eighties hong kong people were mobilizing to try to get democracy because people already understood at the time that the freedoms and rice that punk and people were enjoying time with not really be protected without some octopussy so the united kingdom began to introduce representative government in hong kong but then beijing objected. And then you came back down So so to me. It sounds like the really important part. "So being able to store credentials. It's going to be one of them being able to store rate. Limiting counters is another use case for Kong now with that sad Kong per se is a stateless server, which means that we can get rid of Konno's start Newcomb nodes horizontally, scaled the architecture without worrying about any state. That's being stored within Kong the reason for that. Is that Kong it's relying on a third party dependency to store the state, and that can neither be Cassandra or post grass. So. Yeah. Usually where for example, use cases where developers or organizations are trying to implement an API gateway layer that goes across multi cloud goes across multi regions, and they're trying to enforce a global rate limiting state across each one of these different deployments. So to do that convert example stores the rate limiting counters in Cassandra and Cassandra will then propagate those rate limiting counters across each region each data center to keep them up to date, but can't per se the actual server built on top of engine X and Liu and legit. The that server is stateless. So we can add cognitive have more traffic, we can remove conga nodes, if you have less traffic, and as a matter of fact, we're processing use cases up to a million transactions per second in one of our enterprise deployments told me about why Cassandra is an appealing database for this purpose. Yeah. Cassandra is an eventually. Consistent muster less database, which means that we can start Cassandra cluster made of more than three four five Cassandra nodes, and we can write and read on any Cassandra node and make that request successful. That's very different to systems like post Gress where we have a master process that's going to handle the rights, and and then we have perhaps other post Gress servers that are able to handle those reeds with Cassandra, we don't have to write on one server. We can write on any server, and then Cassandra itself will take care of eventually replicating that information across all the other nodes, so it's a great database to use. If you're trying to eventually consistently replicate information across multiple nodes, and perhaps even multiple regions or multiple data centers and Cassandra was born from the dynamo DB paper that Amazon release. The wild back so dynamo DB. If you're familiar with WS offering so dynamo DB effectively Ron's on top of the of the same paper. It's a highly distributed highly scalable system and Cassandra is built on top of the same specification. And so with Cassandra, basically, we can run the same highly scalable, highly decoupled industry database on top of our own infrastructure. Do people use post grass when they need stronger consistency. Correct. They can use post grass when they either want more simplicity or they can use post grass when they did not have these large distributed requirements for Kong. So for example, if they're running Kong in one or two different data centers or regions pose grass is great for that. Now with that said Kong supports either Cassandra for larger use cases or post grass for smaller use cases, but also working into getting rid of the database dependency in the first place. Whenever Kong is not being used as as a credential store. So let's assume that in the future you want to use Kong with open Eddie connect, which is possible today. Well, open any connect doesn't store any credential income it starts credentials within the Opeti connect providers database, and so congress actively wouldn't need our database by itself, we can just leverage party service for doing our credential validation. And so we're going to work into.

My API gateway layer, for example, basically our request comes in and engine X is receiving that connection. In now, engine X? Thanks to open rest, you will ask custom Lua code. Hey, do you want to do anything with this request? And do you want to do anything with these tell us a handshake or do you want to do anything with a response or getting back or do you want to do anything with the client after the responses being sent back? So basically we have different phases that we can hook into to tell engine X to do something else than what engine X would normally do. And that something else. It's effectively our Lua code running on top of it. Okay. So there are these different phases through which a request goes as it's entering the API gateway being processed by the gape gateway. Take me through those phases. For example. Some of these phases can be the access phase when we first receive a request. And then another phase would be when we received the headers respond centers from the upstream server into engine axe. And then another phase would be the body right after the head will receive the headers then received the actual body of the response, and we can act up on that. And then another phase would be the logged by lure phase. Which basically it's being triggered every time the request response life cycle as being concluded. So every time the client is receiving the last by now, we can do something else in the log by leur phase. And usually, for example, what con- does in this phase would be to support plug ins that allow the user to now log the entire transaction in any third party system that can be Cabana the stack or spying or stats or permit US Open tracing and song. Kong is a stateful application their state that needs to be maintained because maybe authentication rules change over time or other kinds of policies change over time. Maybe you're making some different decisions about routing what kinds of state need to be stored for an API gateway, and what are the requirements for a state management system? Yes, you're you're on point. Right..
