You know this has been happening since i can remember. And it's something that you know. It's just it's just. So i just thought of tangled him on the train now and he won't be sharing me anymore. Sorry about three or four minutes. He appeared in the carriage. And i was saying in facing. Let's say it was going to comedy station. I was facing towards the direction of opposite me. And i got you know me. I'm grown strong independent outspoken woman. And in these situations in my brain. I would tell myself i would say you know. Stop staring at me. But you do none of those things because we've been conditioned since we were very small to be safe you know and especially because how i grow up. I mean i grew up. I was a teenager in the acc. I raise my voice who i make it worse. Says i lose seats so i got up and i moved and he moved with me three times. He never let the whole train journey. You know every train crowded over the wasn't it was quite a was and it was a boat. I would say kinda seven o'clock in the evening and it was going firmly leaks So it really wasn't have been the other way around it would have been jammed. I'm not sure maybe what he had done. Or i certainly wouldn't have been able to move He moves wish me three times. And i you know. I got really scared because he was. He was a toll overpowering man. And then i started panicking before i got to. The station is thinking you know what now he follows me off and all that kind of stop look. I was lucky that he didn't i got off. I checked behind me. And you know he. He didn't want to be off. I was very shaken. I felt very self conscious in my out. I got happens to us as well. Then i started. I actually started victim blaming myself which is a terrible thing. My my skirt is too short. Shouldn't have worn like i was like. Oh my goodness. I was so surprised. Myself my reaction because you know i did fifteen year old niece and i would be telling her doesn't matter what you wear it about. You know all. I can i still. I started victim blaming myself as i walked to to get my partner. I mean he was horrified. That this happens. It's me and you know. He was fantastic and supportive and everything. But that was this. You know you. You don't really think. I didn't report what happened to you and i was seventeen because while i was seventeen i was so vulnerable and so ruined from the experience and because i'd been drinking and he told me it was my fault because i'd been drinking. I believed that it believed it was my fault. I relieved it was my fault and senator. I saw louise o'neill's play think in forest. I mean that most sincerely. And i don't even think lewis realizes the book that she rose in the play that that was done in the every man how free and it was for me and then i was able to tell. My story told us or a book so then a few weeks later. You know the work. That i do so i would be in contact quite a lot of guards. I remember saying to one guard in particular career. This happened to me you know a few weeks ago. I'm just wondering you know. Like like watching i bosses. And he say his sneakers and he said asher lights that as a compliment. "Had no dogs in the bed. And then The pandemic happened and we gave up on a lot of our rules and kind of had like anything goes awhile and and now that they now that they are in the bad. I kind of don't want to kick him out like it now. So going back i now now. We have dog beds everywhere but they usually in the bed. Lucy birds bird stays in the bed all night long but lucy she kinda gets up and down fifteen times plus she just getting into the cooler periods. Yeah she goes. I have My health is my house is like a hundred years old. And so There used to be a fireplace in my bedroom and answer the fireplace has gone but the the brick at the bottom is still there. So it's like the coolest place to to lie so that's release easily. Hang out actually knauss annoy sort of impromptu sorta like crate but not a crate area. Yeah it's like a place. Because it is a little distinctive area alec different texture different material and yeah. She likes being on there. So what you. Your local walks lock so we we walk around my neighborhood. Most of the time But we'll go if my house is like the center Of the spokes of the wheel. We go out never different direction Just depending on the day and And depending on where. It's garbage day as well always garbage car. I don't know what it's like over in australia like here in my neighborhood. Garbage is picked up on tuesday morning but the next neighborhood over from me. It's on wednesday morning. And so on. Tuesdays i go over there but on wednesdays i stayed over here. 'cause i try to avoid it. So that's that's part of our routine on on tuesday mornings. We always go somewhere else but we will we walk around here and there's a bunch of little parks that are that are just like pretty manicured little city parks around here And until we go to those most is and then we're really lucky to have a beautiful wooded area. It's about fifteen minute drive from our house and the dogs are permitted off leash and there's streams and trails and wonderful dogs really nice people and so we go there like once or twice a week us Been any interesting incidents at the at pack. Oh my gosh well. If you want to start talking about the things that burqas eaten we could start with what he's eaten at the park. So there's there are a lot of trails that go rounds in in in our area and pennsylvania. There's a lot of deer a lot of deer so this is a little foreshadowing. What happened one day We were walking around and bird. He just has the most amazing sense of smell of any dog. I've ever met. And so i think from the moment that we got out of the car probably before we even got out of the car probably when we were driving on the road to get there. He could smell that. There was a dead deer somewhere and he probably knew exactly where it was from the minute we got there. And so we want her walking doing our loop It's like maybe two miles or something like that that we walk and so we're walking around in the woods and we're and we're going the dogs off leash And they're allowed to be off leash there. And all the sudden bird get so with of something and he goes charging down into this ravine and it was in the fall. I don't think it can't remember if it was fall. Twenty twenty or twenty nineteen but there were piles and piles Bike three feet deep of leaves everywhere and has really steep ravines and so he goes running down and i was really nervous because That took you down to the road and so usually that's not a problem because we're way up high on the ridge on the trail but birth went down and i was nervous. He was gonna cross the road. So luc- i said lucy come on. We gotta go down. So lucy's like oh great. This is gonna be such a fun adventure. She's like bouncing around. And i'm like nervous. I'm like trying to run down this hill and the leaves are so steep. So i was i was like sliding on my but through the leaves and it was disgusting because you could smell the deer p in the leaves and you know like i just knew it was just so i just. We were very dirty by the end of this activity and So we get down to the bottom of this ravine where i could see bird and he was down in this crevice and i'm sorry for anyone. Hope no one's eating lunch He had owned this deer carcass. That was lake pretty decomposed and and he. I found him and i was like so scared. I was gonna fall into this mess so i'm trying to like straddle over the side did not fall slid leaves and all of this and i had to reach an burt had his whole head. Inside of a ribcage of this dear it was so disgusting. And and i had to reach in my hand. And i was like screaming the whole time i the region right hand and grabs caller and get him out was so mad at him and And then since we were all the way down there. I had to luckily unleash the dogs up and we had to walk back to the car like on the side of the road so that that's one of the more memorable and like outlandish stories. That's happened there And so because of that. Sometimes bird has to be at least at that park when i can just tell that. He's like getting an idea. So how how win is live around. They're usually good. And i think that's kind of on me a little bit. I try to pay a lot of attention when we're out there And if i see anything which we don't usually during the day. But if i see anything any kind of animal during the day like a big one like a deer alcohol the dogs over to me before they see it hopefully But they burt. And lucy they have never changed a deer Far or anything like that. My my old dog lola. One time she. She chased one pretty far. I had to go find her But burton lizzy have been pretty good about that. And mola animals. Well they do. We have a battle with the squirrels. All the time in a lot of squirrels And in my backyard. I have a big Black walnut tree and so the squirrels. We have tons of scrolls. 'cause they're always up there eating walnuts and running around And so the squirrels they. I think they do it on purpose. They torment the dogs Because they they run on. Telephone wires to and bert like Bark telephone wire for five minutes.

"Sort of cave. I think because. I am always doing something to kind of progress my business in some way. There's always an idea going on something that i've learned from the podcast. Will somebody else that. I wanted to talk to find out how they do things. So it's definitely been a steady growth. I document every single number figure that comes into the studio. And i do have to sometimes stop and look back and sort of you know. Look at my numbers and realized wow eighties. Actually it's growing boss. Yeah it's it's steady knauss could went i. I met you and decided to follow your journey. You working fulltime as a nurse doing photography part time. Is that still the case today. Sorry i was working. Fulltime is a and i was taking on the weekend by then dropped down to four days then three days and working at the host and then i fell pregnant with my now and once i had heard february latched. Yeah that was sort of my a transition out of him at work at the house through. And now i work as a nurse on a casual basis not so much during the pandemic. It's not the nicest place debate but yet now the plannings i i wasn't a inventory treat aids my business and now i would say i'm doing about two and a half to three days in a business in the business. Sorry just because. I have my daughter. I have just gone through time in the business or anything like that and i'm pregnant with my second child. Eighty is going to be a while before. I'm full time in the business that everything's kind of hot time at the moment so i want to get back to the two and a half type thing just a second but can you give us a snapshot of where you are knocked turnover or revenue wise with business. Now yes to twenty nine. Tain i worked obviously the full year the full calendar year. That was three days at the hospital and three days in a year. And i cracked six that year which i was really proud and come twenty twenty. I had my daughter anne in february. Sorry i was closed. And then obviously the pandemic hit and i remain closed pretty much. I did three shoots july before we got shut down again. So i didn't. I began to november. Twenty twenty was a bit of a ride off and then so for the financial year that just ended. I had anywhere seven months. And i tend to just over one hundred and eighty thousand dollars. Holy shit that's amazing. Yeah really really awesome. Really proud of myself and the my goal is definitely to hit the three hundred k. this columbia older with another baby underway. Move say how that goes but yeah three hundred k. Then the next five hundred k. And i'm just going out from there but it's a hang on so you've got like close two hundred k. turnover and you're doing two and a half days away. What really is that really true. Yes from november to the end of gene. Which is the end of our financial year. Seven months had Nassar yet two and a half days way hundred eighty it was just just one hundred ninety thousand bilas seven months. Which was. I was pretty happy with amazing. You are incredible okay. So you said before that the growth was incremental. It sort of been pretty steady. Did you find that you know when you work with a coach or you implemented marketing strategy or china process was anything along the way where took a radical jump up. He went from fifty to one hundred thousand. Yep definitely in. Twenty nineteen is where my systems really started playing a big pot and that was a lot to do with the insurance coaching. Did with markers that are. He'd sort helped made a really systemized things. Get a priceless. That i was really happy with and just work out exactly how i wanted to do things because i was only working in the studio three days a week. I needed to make sure that everything was really streamlined. So i would say working with him really gave me a good snapshot of my business. I roll what i needed to do to actually run a business. Not just a hobby. Kind of winging it as i went. I wanted to make sure that. I knew exactly what else do anything. And he was a huge pot in that north. So when you say systems of systematize your business like what does that mean to me at mainz that at this point i really wanna get to a point. Where any single person walk in here. And do what i do. Obviously the business side of things is a huge pot. The taking the days. I would say it's about twenty percent of it. The rest of it is running a business. And it's something that i really enjoy. Which is why. I think that i'm so successful but i want to. I want someone to be able to walking and to do a further sheet. Exactly how i would do it. I want an admin us and to be able to offer gift batches printing the gif. Ouch is package them and know exactly who to send to. By creating these systems as videos. I want so susie susie she looks. She does shoot a man Suzy's made up by the way. But i do have gabrielle. Is my admin assistant so than gabrielle knight. Exactly what products to order had ordered them how to get them from saudi. Some what to do next so that my business running on its own. And i think that he need systems in place to do that okay. You're recording videos of. How will they seasons. Working your business absolutely. Yes say. Every time i do something. I ask myself. Is this something. I'm going to have do again. And if the answer is yes sir. I am going to have to do this again. Great will make a video and could in the manual so that then somebody else can watch it and then they can do it for me. Is this with a view to grow the business credit. Another separate business to franchise or to sell the business down with the idea of doing this it differently to guard. I have a plan to be standing over a million dollars and taking her a load of big chunk of that. But i want to do that by working in our wake. I want to do that.

If not a line of people ready to talk to me is to share their story but then also asked me what they can do to help like my neighbor lost. Baby what do i do or my coworker lost his dad. How do i support him. You know so it's like okay. All these people want to help but they just don't feel empowered and they don't feel confident to show up and then all these people over here hurting and desperately need people to support them. So how can we bridge that gap in that actually led me to create this support card. That was a postcard and on the front side. It said how. Can i love you better. Because that's the driving question of love not last and then on the back side. It said you know i see. You're going through a tough time. I really wanna show up for you and it had checked boxes of like. What can i do to help you bring you a meal. Take you to coffee. Sit and talk. Give you a hug. This was all pre code of course and so we have checked by them. We have a couple of other things that we're working on. We're actually in the midst of a capital campaign to raise money to turn. How can you better dot com into a full-blown grief support app. Which were really excited about. So that's that's the community support program and then the third program is our corker care program where we bring grief in empathy training to the workplace to create cultures of caring. Because at the same time. I would hear people families that we were serving. Tell me that they were worried about losing their job or they did lose their job because of their situation i would have corporate leader saying one of our team members. Just lost their spouse. Would we do and so. It was the same disconnect rate where like people wanted to help people were also suffering and so me bridge this gap in so we created the corporate care program in launched a supposed to be an in-person workshop called heart at work on march. Sixth of twenty twenty so. It was kind of a disaster. We got one bad timing. I know we got one off. Where the world shutdown and so we filmed everything. We're launching it as an online course later. Yeah he's an awesome. She's an assist. Like i'm like no we have a narcissistic streak absolutely and we all exhibit narcissistic behaviours. That time that doesn't mean we're diagnose -able knauss completely but i- narcissistic streak. We all have early. Indicting and to differing degrees is the desire to impress. Yes rather than connect and so we go on a date with someone in the high. If someone's really on the extreme end they will give the greatest of someone's life not posing goes away and they're like this guy is amazing all this and they they may have on an amazing date but you you know nothing yet. I'm what's co about your wife. I go through that process with you is in. Oh i can imagine for her. It's almost like why. I want to see how you arm week full. Yeah i want to see how you are in month three and until you've been there you really don't know how great of somebody is going to be and that that's what i mean by when you asked me about what i've really learned about love. There is a recent graphic report for example on a network of media outlets sort of local action groups and accounts on facebook associated with the chinese businessmen. Whoa wangi who's connected to steve bannon promoting conspiracy theories about the twenty twenty. Us election and cove nineteen. These pages coordinate but they appear to be representing their own opinions. So this is end. Cip or check point to another example. That i know. Evelyn has been interested in there. Are reports of a digital marketing. Firm rally forge. Which is linked to a pro-trump youth group turning points posing as progressive organization targeting democratic voters sort of promoting green party candidates in an effort to split the democratic vote. This sounds bad but it doesn't meet facebook's definition of cib's so are these operations you less bad in some way than cib are they not particularly egregious in the same way and does that gray area worry you. I described badness year in two ways. The first is how difficult or easy is it for someone outside of a platform to understand. Who's actually behind again if you're systemically using a network of fake accounts it's almost impossible for people outside of the platforms to pierce that veil. So we see it as particularly egregious because it's a space where the structure of our platform is being used to facilitate the deception. And it's where we have the best ability to. We're the least cost voyeur. As you would say an economics where we have the best ability to expose these operations when others might out the second reason i would argue. It's particularly egregious is there are a lot of grey zones around what constitutes legitimate advocacy versus inauthentic deception online. We were talking about some of them earlier when you were asking about the rise of sort of these grey or techniques among these actors the question of whether it is okay to run a network of fake accounts that is accounts that to represent real people. When in fact they do. Knauss is not really a gray area. We've been very clear for years. That violates our policies. The other platforms have been very clear about this host 2016 public debate. Has i think largely aligned had been very clear that this is not an acceptable type of behavior and so it is particularly egregious. People continue to do this because it is a very clear indicator that they know what they are doing is deceptive and that they are crossing these lines intentional the further they go from that core behavior. The less clear is how deceptive their beat and then. The last thing that i would say is c. I b. what we have seen is that the most determined and aggressive threat actors or comfortable using cib. This particularly egregious as i have said technique and it means that we often see adversarial innovation within cib. I so in other words. New trends and new techniques express themselves within the context of c. i. b. and then trickled down other types of deceptions and part of this is because we governments and other well-funded actors trying to drive cib. What that means is remember. I said there were multiple goals for being transparent. One of the goals is getting out awareness about techniques as they emerged quickly. But that means is if we're systemically reported on the id campaigns we are getting out public awareness techniques as they emerge as quickly as possible. And that's part of how we think about this. None of that is to say that there aren't serious violations and harmful behavior that is not see i be. There's a reason that we enforce against things for inauthentic behavior. There's a reason that we enforce against a whole range of different actions on the platform but in this particular context thinking about authenticity in hiding your identity using a network of fake accounts is the most violative the hardest to expose and the most sort of clearly signaling malicious intent of the various behaviors. We've seen so as we discussed you. You don't run. Allah facebook You just run a small slice of facebook and a common critique of the company is that the problem is not necessarily the faker inflammatory materially on the site but rather the way that the platform as a whole is designed to amplify that content and privilege. It over maybe more boring but true and to use your language authentic material. I'm wondering how you feel about that critique and whether you ever feel like your work is awarded or made harder by the way that the product you're in charge of securing is itself designed. I understand why people make that critique when you actually push on the evidence behind it doesn't make a lot of sense what i mean by that. Is this people react to inflammatory content but there is a lot of research and a lot of evidence showing the people don't want to spend a bunch of time in environments that are full inflammatory concepts. So if you're a social media platform and you want to build communities that will persist. You went to community of a last more than a few days that will be more than a flash in the pan you don't want those communities to be full of inflammatory content because people will leave. That's just very clear. What all the research that. I've seen indicates and so the incentive from facebook perspective and many of these decisions are not decisions that near my team is making but it is against our business interests to build communities that are full of inflammatory content. I think everything that the company is trying to do is to drive that type of stuff down and to help support authentic voices and more meaningful debate. So i think that that is a claim that i often hear that i just haven't seen supported by evidence so i wanna push you on that a little bit because i do feel like if you asked me you know. It's different now. We're getting ready to emerge from our cocoons here, and people are buying deodorant, teeth, whitener. Other things that show people are getting out of the house. How about give us some of those sales numbers? Um, well, it's interesting. You know, there's this funny little To me funny little product categories that are suddenly spiking, like at Wal Mart, which is the country's largest retailer. So a pretty good sample size alarm clock sales and April were double what they were last year. Luggage sales were up 400%. They also received a spike and cosmetics, beauty teeth. Whiteners fails just in the last, you know, a few weeks and months. The alarm clock thing is fascinating to me. I get luggage. We're ready to go. But he told me like all these folks just woke up whenever or didn't use their iPhone alarm clock. Now they need an alarm clock. It's not 100% clear to me or you know walmart. Exactly why alarm clock sales are going up, 11. Guess is that people Um, you know, words necessarily always getting up. You know, at a time a set time or we're just kind of naturally waking up in that worked for a lot of people over the last year. On, but they don't always wanna have their phones around. You know, people do buy a lot of folks or kids, You know they're going back to school now. If if your schools in person this is April data So if your school wasn't in person, your child might not have been getting up. You know what a precise time and now they are. And I think a lot of kids will use alarm clocks because their parents don't wanna have phones in the room there A couple of references in your story, too, about hair, facial hair for men. Well, you know, there's still out of stocks for products. Some of what is causing Product shortages now, in some cases, a big surges in the band right and that's what we were seen early in the pandemic, But there's also a lot of it is right now with global supply chain and that has affected so many different product categories. Um, a little over a year ago. Now, um, those buying trends have slowed way down and sales are down compared to last year. In the meantime, sales of things like Pete White Mirror and deodorant and luggage are way up in the story. Last week, a host of retailers from Macy's to target Reported strong sales for the spring quarter, noting that apparel, beauty and travel products all were selling well. Was it at Was it a Wal Mart were luggage sales year over you were up 400%. Exactly. Yeah, there's also seen this is April data that they were talking about April this year versus 2020. They also saw alarm clock sales go way up and which I am still a little bit scratched my head about the Who's using the alarm clock. So I guess for kids often you still buy an alarm clock? Well, not only that His alarm clock goes bad, so they had to buy a new one. I will say I've had many bad alarm clock. You're not very No, they could be pretty cheaply made, and I don't get pricey lab clocks for myself. I think if you don't throw it across the room when it goes off, they last longer that that probably helps out. Okay, So you know, I've buying different things. I'm ordering things online and I'm running into shortages are these Retailers having trouble stocking the shelves with some of these products. Not yet. That's why it's not quite on the scale that we saw for some of these other things last year, you know, there seems to still be plenty of mouthwash and deodorant in the supply chain. Overall, we're seeing a lot of disruptions in the supply chains for many kinds of products right now, but that's not necessarily related to sort of Um, you know, vaccination race or sort of a pandemic related shift and spending, right? I guess that there was I was thinking of the supply line. Not so much the The rush at the grocery store. I'll s so how long do these retailers expect this to last? Well, it's really unclear, you know, and I think as a zoo, many of the buying trends through the pandemic has been will be regional pockets right where they pop up, and then they calm down, and then they pop up again. And then they calm down because people are getting out and about in different ways all over the country. And as we know, some of this has become very has become cultural. Putting what you know you're doing in your neighborhood. You might be doing different things socially right now or not. Okay. I have to ask you about condoms and what this tells us about the end of the pandemic. People are ready to get out of their house and socialized. You know, when I talked to some consumers by, say, more sort of like on the younger side of things I said. You know, they're actually kind of nervous. Like they created their bubble of friends. They you know they haven't gone out and socialize. The strangers and part of their spending on, you know, face fast or teeth, whitener or condoms is preparing and getting ready and feeling confident those moments. Sales of sexual health products, which includes condoms up 32% for the week ending May 1st. I thought was interesting. You did talk to a number of young people. Did you come across Anxiety there like a little social anxiety. Is it real? Yeah. Oh, definitely. I think so. Yeah, and just been such a strange year in terms of how we present ourselves for so many people that if you were not working outside of the home, you might not have thought about that. The same, You know, really at all for over a year, I guess that's true. I mean, it's hard for me to understand because I guess Sara, I really did continue to come into the studio every day. So Don't act like that. If you had a job where you were around other people. You don't think you felt that as a cue if you work in a grocery store, you didn't You know you were coming into work everything. But, you know, I did feel a little bit of that We've been talking about that this week is we start to take our masks off. Around other people, and I guess that's what we're talking about, isn't it? It's just there is this Saturday increased exposure to the Wal Mart executives observation WalMart, the country's largest retailer, So you know it's a big sample size for these kinds of consumer behavior trends and They said, You know, we're seeing teeth. Whitener sales go up, but we attribute that to the fact that people are taking their mass. Aw, yeah, and I would imagine lipstick will follow. What products are I mean, I would imagine sales of bread makers have dropped off. Yeah. I mean, you're seen in that same sort of, you know, late April early May period. I think if you describe the kind of central part of the state Um, which is I don't know, in relation to say Wal Mart like what's happening there? Yeah, it's a It's a town where, you know, um, sort of north of that Wal Mart there a few other Walmarts, you know, there's a walmart every 30 Miles. Say on the highway is you had to Scotty get but north of that small town that has about 8000 people in it. There really isn't much you know, in terms of a large retailer, and it starts to get pretty remote, pretty fast. So it's a Wal Mart that when I talk to the workers there, and some of the folks in the in town it gets a lot of business from people sort of coming down from up north, sometimes even 70 miles away. The shop. And and so if you know, it's a service that type of community, Then they're getting the doses for free and basically administering them for free. They're exactly the government is giving doses all the pharmacies for free. They're free to patients. Walmart When I talked to an executive there in the pharmacy side, so they're going to get you know a small fee if you have insurance bill insurance. But other than that, they're shoulder in the cost of, you know, the labor and the supply chain. I think, though, there is a benefit from a business standpoint for Wal Mart because Robert is trying to grow its health and wellness business.
